10 years ago today, Dreamscaperers; Gravity Falls' 19th episode, premiered. And with it, marked the formal introduction of the show's most iconic, most beloved and most memorable villain and arguably, character. You all know who he is; The yellow triangle in a top hat himself...

And here it is at last! The Gravity Falls Multi-Artist Lyric Comic tribute to the Stan Twins, "Trouble"!
Stay tuned, as @stariousfalls is working on making all of this into a video version. That will be coming along in the next few weeks!
EDIT: here is the video!
And of course, Happy Birthday to Dipper and Mabel! (Even if this project was Grunkles-centric, Stan and Ford's stories wouldn't have come to such a heart-warming resolution if it wasn't for their niblings. Credit where it's due!)
Some credits and acknowledgements below the read-more:

Gravity Falls Season 1 Review
Since the start of the 21st century I’ve noticed there’s an animated show every decade that redefines the landscape of western animation. That may sound like a bold claim, but when you really look at it, there are a couple of stand-out shows. The 2000s saw Avatar: The Last Airbender take home the crown, becoming a hit with audiences and critics with elements that were rarely exhibited in Western children’s animation. It featured well-rounded characters, a serialised narrative, references to East Asian culture and mature themes including war, genocide, totalitarianism, and free choice to name a few. The show remains one of the best-rated series of all time, winning several awards during its runtime and staying in the Top 10 lists of reviewers almost 14 years after its conclusion. And if Avatar claimed the top spot in the 2000s, Gravity Falls won the crown in the 2010s.
Tumblr media
It’s hard to believe Gravity Falls is now 10 years old. The show was a significant part of thousands of childhoods, including my own, and remains one of the most beloved animated shows to this day. The show is a brilliant example of multi-generational entertainment with a story, characters, and humour that children and adults can both enjoy without fear of being alienated. It’s the main reason this show remains a modern-day influence in children’s animation and why many still enjoy 10 years after its premiere. I’d go so far as to call Gravity Falls the start of the modern Golden Age of Disney Channel Animation with its influence present in other hit shows Amphibia and The Owl House as well as other shows on different platforms.
To celebrate Gravity Falls’ tenth anniversary, I feel I should share what I, as well as many others enjoy about the show. However, if you know Gravity Falls, you know there is a lot to cover. Even with a finite runtime, the show thrived on its mysteries, conspiracies, and ciphers, creating a sizeable fanbase that tried to match wits with showrunner, Alex Hirsch. If you google “Gravity Falls theory”, then you will be jumping into the deep end of one of the largest online discussions in recent years. So to make this review more manageable, I will only cover Season 1 in this review, and I will discuss Season 2 when it turns 8 on August 1. Gravity Falls is one of the most beloved and interesting shows in recent memory, so I want to make sure it’s given the respect and recognition it deserves. With all that said, let’s take a look at Season 1 of Gravity Falls.
Tumblr media
The show has one of the best-written narratives of modern television, taking elements from Hirsch’s own childhood, eighties pop-culture and modern settings. The Pines twins, Dipper (Jason Ritter) and Mabel (Kristen Schaal) spend their summer vacation in the titular, fictional town of Gravity Falls. They live with their con-artist “Grunkle” Stan (Hirsch) who runs a sketchy tourist trap called “The Mystery Shack”, staffed by teenage girl Wendy (Linda Cardellini) and Soos (Hirsch). It’s simple, but it works. Hirsch placed many of his childhood experiences in the show, projecting his memories of growing up onto Dipper and basing the characters of Mabel and Stan around his sister and grandpa. This is a major reason why Gravity Falls is timeless, it invokes childhood and summer nostalgia, living with a distant relative, summer camp, going to the pool or goofing off with friends, there’s something for everyone. Gravity Falls combines this nostalgia with a fantastical element, taking inspiration from eighties and nineties pop-culture, blending fantasy and reality to create a compelling story.
Tumblr media
The plot begins when Dipper notices strange things happening around town, but nobody believes him. After wandering though the woods, Dipper discovers a mysterious journal written by an anonymous author with a gold hand with six fingers and the number 3 on the cover. The journal chronicles several entries about paranormal activity and odd goings-on that plague Gravity Falls which Dipper and Mabel use to combat various foes. These include classic monsters like ghosts, sea monsters, and zombies as well as video-game characters, time travellers, and psychics. For most of the season, the show goes very old-school Scooby Doo with a new monster every week, however, what separates Gravity Falls from similar fantasy animation is that there’s typically an unconventional twist that changes the episode, giving a humorous and often profound conclusion that makes us laugh, think, develops the characters, or all of the above. At the same time, there is an overlying serialisation the audience is constantly reminded of when the journals are used: who is the author and what happened to them?
Tumblr media
A notable trait animated shows are known for is the “floating timeline” method with a new story every episode. Gravity Falls instead incorporates a serialised narrative where an overarching story takes place together with character-focused subplots. Hirsch has stated that finding character stories was the hardest thing to write about, but necessary to push the show forward. The writers did a great job at keeping focus on the central cast and while Season 1 didn’t have too many episodes that pushed the main narrative, they still served to establish character development. In order to have the emotional scenes create the desired impact, it was important to show them enjoying their summer, learning about themselves and others, and just having a good time. “Land Before Swine” probably didn’t need a conflict between Dipper and Soos, however, this is necessary to have them grow as characters and have them establish a firm relationship that lasts the rest of the show. While not all the episodes had gripping character growth, they still served to establish them as believable characters and make the action and emotional scenes more jarring.
Tumblr media
One of the best aspects of the show are the characters. The Pines twins are two of the strongest child protagonists I’ve seen in a Disney cartoon. They have different strengths; different weaknesses and they rely on each other to balance them out. They are a great pair because they go through the same experiences, but they have different ideas as to how to spend summer. Dipper wants to embrace and solve the mysteries of Gravity Falls whereas Mabel just wants a fun time. These clashing goals form an easy source of conflict to drive the story forwards, but it’s not malicious, sometimes Dipper saves Mabel and other times Mabel saves Dipper. It’s a real sibling relationship and you can tell they both love each other with nearly every episode giving them a happy ending. The dynamic between the pair works great, but it’s taken up to eleven when the rest of the Mystery Shack crew is involved.
Tumblr media
Grunkle Stan works well as a character and plot device with most of the show’s humour and mystery focusing on him. He always schemes new ways to make money and his often-elaborate plans put him in hilarious situations that provide the more mature humour. Whether he succeeds or fails, Stan is a stand-out character. Another stand-out is the shack’s handyman, Soos, the otherwise comic-relief who joins the twins on most of their adventures. While the twins highlight the child-like side of fantasy, Soos represents the more young-adult part. He’s a fan of video games, anime, and other nerd culture Dipper is too young for. He’s also incredibly loyal to the Pines family, notably Stan, always coming through when it counts. Finally, there’s the part-time cashier, Wendy Corduroy, the teenage tomboy who is always ready to kick ass. As befitting of a teenager, she is rebellious laid-back, and while she doesn’t carry many episodes on her own, her wit and sarcastic attitude help balance out the main cast, and she also provides some of the best action scenes that are rivalled only by Stan.
Tumblr media
This is only scratching the surface of this incredible show, and I don’t think I can compress it all into one post. That said, Gravity Falls is a masterwork of modern animation, and its influence and legacy can still be seen in other animated Disney shows. It has intriguing mysteries, fleshed characters, an equal balance of light and dark humour, and expert storytelling for the serialised narrative and single-episode plots. It’s great television, and half the time, you forget you’re watching an animated show, and I’m so grateful to Alex Hirsch for creating something that you can enjoy as a kid, and still enjoy when you’re an adult. I may be in my 20s now, but I don’t think I’ll every stop loving this brilliant show, and I don’t think anyone else will either.

Dipper accidentally summons King Phantom to Gravity Falls to help against Bill?
okay never thought i'd write anything with GF buttttt here ya go @guardianrex <3
And Happy super late tenth birthday gravity falls. Hope this rocks.
"You're just a teenager!" Dipper pointed at the lanky boy from behind the table turned cover. His finger shakes a little as he wills himself to be brave.
"You're just a teenager!" Dipper pointed at the lanky boy from behind the table-turned-cover. His finger shakes a little as he wills himself to be brave.
"And you're just a kid," said teenager yawns, rubbing sleep out of heavily bagged eyes. "Is there a reason I'm standing in my living room with some kid I don't know at ass o clock in the morning?"
Dipper swallows. He'd meant to summon the 'Infinity King', a figure Grunkle Ford had found information on during his travels. The King of All Reality was supposedly an eldritch being of unknown origin and deathless power, one that could possibly be asked to help deal with Bill and his crap.
And his research was going perfectly! The texts Ford had shown him a few weeks ago- the very same texts that Dipper had stolen while Ford was asleep, were translated quite easily (who knew Pig Latin was a viable language in some realities?) and used without his Grunkle's knowledge. Against said Grunkle's warnings.
But ignoring warnings could have gone much worse. At least the figure floating three inches off the floor looked about as human as Dipper did. He knows from personal experience (what a weird summer) it doesn't mean much, but at least the King's skin wasn't like, inside-out or something gross. He shudders at the thought of the possibility.
Although the King looks nothing more than a teenager who just woke up, Dipper could still sense something about the guy was... off.
Unnatural
Dipper realizes he's been staring for a while, and that he's being stared back at. He points more confidently at the King and swallows his fear.
"Takes one to uh... takes one to know one!"
Smooth
The Infinity King sighs and pinches his brow. "Look, kid. I don't know how you summoned me or why you summoned me, but I'm very tired. I have no money, and I would like to go back to bed before the test I have tomorrow."
"Oh man, is it not summer break for you? That stinks."
"Buddy I'm in summer school, it does stink. So I'd appreciate being able to leave. Please."
"Oh yeah let me just-" Dipper almost falls for the believable performance before catching himself. "Wait a second, that's dumb. I'm not gonna fall for that, Infinity King!"
Dipper shines his flashlight into the King's eyes and is on the receiving end of a very angry stare. "Ancients help me..." the King sighs.
"Nobody can help you! Those sigils are for trapping ghosts and spirits! So now you gotta listen to what I say."
"I really don't have a choice, huh?" The King crosses his legs and places an elbow on his knee. "Alright, shortie. What did you summon me for? Need dating advice? Video game level can't be beat? Annoying sister?"
"I'm not so dumb to summon a powerful being for petty squabbles or whatever!" Dipper grumbles. "I'm dealing with something really really bad, alright?"
He walks up to the border of the circle and shows the King the journal, specifically the pages on Bill Cipher.
"What the hell is this thing? An evil triangle?" the King asks and begins to read. "Don't like how that page gives me goosebumps."
"He's an inter dimensional demon and a jerk. He's also evil and messing with my family."
"Well, I don't know what I can do, but inter dimensional jerks happen to be what I fight most." the King sighs. "What can I do to help?"
"First you gotta make me a-a deal!" Dipper's voice squeaks, realizing what he's said aloud before looking around to make sure Bill isn't going to pop up out of nowhere.
"Kid, I don't think deals are a good choice for someone your age, nor with an inter dimensional being like me."
"Yeah, but like, your kind is kinda all about deals, right?"
"No, but I guess if it makes you feel better... how about you buy me a pizza when this is over. A pizza, and a milkshake of my choice."
"You're serious?" Dipper squints.
"Deadly." the King grins.
"Alright, deal then-"
"Okay, drop the shield and we'll shake on it."

Happy 10th Anniversary Gravity Falls!
And Happy Birthday to Stan and Ford!  And also Happy Birthday to Alex! And @eregyrn-falls! And me! (It’s been an eventful week!)
We’ll meet again some sunny day!
And they didn’t.... Because Bill is still a statue.
But everyone else got together for a reunion at a secluded lake with a lovely view of the cliffs!
Headcanons for this:
Mabel dyed her hair during quarantine and never looked back.
Pacifica asked Mabel to give her some purple streaks once they were vaccinated and able to get together again.
Dipper kept working out since his encounter with the Manotaurs because he wanted to be able to keep up with his Grunkles on future adventures.
Mabel ended up with more of a large, strong woman physique from continuing to carry Waddles around as he grew.
Dipper and Mabel both eventually needed glasses like their Grunkles.
Ford finally got new ones and miraculously hasn’t broken them yet.
Stan hasn’t cut his hair since passing the title of Mr. Mystery on to Soos.
They both earned a spattering of white hairs to go with their gray from encountering (and running away from) anomalies around the world... And maybe from dealing with each other’s terrible jokes for so long.
Soos and Melody started a family. They’re not sure how many kids they want yet.
Fiddleford and Tate have mended their relationship and work on an invention, fish, or hike together at least once a month. Fiddleford made them an ice fishing shanty-bot and revisited his robot legs idea for long hikes.
Candy, Grenda, and Mabel are still best friends but now with the addition of Pacifica to their group.
Wendy stuck around to help her dad with his business and is still the coolest woman in town.
Thank you to everyone who made this show possible! I’ve met some amazing friends and super talented creators in this fandom and have loved every minute of mysteries, anomalies, and ciphers! It got me through some rough times, inspired me to draw again, and inspired me to write several hundred thousand words.
(Since it’s also pride month, clicky the images for more/clearer detail and see if you can spot a few little references I added, I mean, aside from the umbrella basically being a giant pride flag.)

Just like us who have watched their adventures through a sleepy little town in the Pacific Northwest, either 11 years ago or 11 days ago, they've grown another year older today. As summer 2023 winds down and the curtains close on this timeless season, we take a moment to wish a very happy birthday to Dipper and Mabel. Your Gravity Falls adventures/legacy remain beloved by so many!!
Tumblr media
They shaped a generation of fans who love them dearly still. You may not be real, but you've changed the lives of so many for the better...and we all love you, no matter what happens and how many years pass. Thank you Alex Hirsch. And Thank you, Gravity Falls!❤️🎂

Do you have any headcanons? about Dipper and Mabel's parents?
I gave my headcanons in this post, and haven't really put any additional thought into them, except this:
Some tech industry people want to be on the CUTTING EDGE OF TECH, and other tech industry people are like "I understand technology WAY too well to trust this new stuff they're making now, I'm using my older tech until it breaks." From Lost Legends, we know that by the end of summer, Mabel had a smart phone—which in 2012 was rare even for adults, much less a 13-year-old. So her dad is a "cutting edge" tech industry guy.
We also know she didn't have a phone at the beginning of summer, because she says so in Dipper Vs. Manliness. She got it at some point during that summer.
I headcanon that their parents got Mabel's letter about a second grunkle (???) coming out of a portal (?????) and priority shipped her a brand new smart phone like "Happy early birthday sweetheart. Now, call us immediately when anything else weird happens, okay??"

finished my rewatch of gravity falls today so here's some random thoughts i wrote down over the course of the last few episodes (sure most of this has been mentioned already but eh. no harm in repeating things):
-could you imagine how differently things would've gone if any of the pines members knew about ford's nightmare (especially stan)
-ford visibly shaking from how hard he's digging his fingers into the floor (referring to the security droid grabbing him)
-ford almost dies three times before bill actually captures him
-'i haven’t been able to find grunkle stan anywhere' was stan not at the shack at that time or did you just not consider checking his house
-a full limerick for 'man from kentucky' wasn’t allowed, but onscreen death is??
-shapeshifter wink + mabeland fake wendy wink
-why is the unicorn half petrified? what caused the gnome to be mostly petrified, but not quite? how was woodpecker guy able to keep his petrified woodpecker? so many questions about these guys. what occurred here
-first time ford gets turned to "gold", he appears cracked. the second time, he’s free of cracks. implication: either the stone/"gold" people get turned into cracks over time or bill roughed ford up a bit even before the torture
-bill disassembles ford and reassembles him on the other side of the room. interesting to consider for. y'know. torture
-speaking of bill, WHY DO YOU HAVE EIGHT EYELASHES NOW. YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO HAVE SEVEN
-love fiddleford so much. and also zanthar. and craz and xyler. and soos. and-
-manly dan hugs wendy more gently than soos does
-'(strangely genuine) good to see you too bro >:(' i'm sorry stan did seeing your brother trapped in a horrifying gold-ish statue change your tune a bit
-i agree with the circle actually. the fuck are you doing, stan.
-i feel like the stan twins were strangled in different ways. it seems like ford was literally being strangled and bill was doing something directly to stan's lungs, based on the way they reacted to it. or i'm looking way too much into the animation who knows
-the way stan kneels on the ground :((((
-actually every scene with post-deal stan in it
-ford ultimate depression
-waddles was waiting for them :(((((((((
-stan lies in different ways depending on what he remembers (referring to him lying about the destroyed house being a nice place to be polite)
-'someone get waddles off of me!!' ford: :0 :D
-this also implies that ford learned waddles name at some point
-was wondering why pacifica seemed to have a bit of a character regression. then realized that she had to live with her abusive parents after the party. they uh. they need to be obliterated (heck you can even tell there's a sort of distance between them based on the fact that pacifica's parents wait for her to come to them, as opposed to the corduroys running to wendy immediately. it's not even a durland + blubs situation, they are fully aware of their surroundings at this point)
-pacifica's still trying her best though!!
-ford sings happy birthday with everyone else :)))
-ford's hair grows out really quickly
-'heh' resulting in an immediate :0 until ford keeps talking, at which point stan smiles again
-stan did you think that laugh was intended to be a 'that's ridiculous stan why would you ever think that' type deal and not a 'wow i love talking to you this is great' type thing
-'SHUT UP FOREVER'
-'CAN IT SOOS' in sync (hey ford you learned his name!)
-stan's 'don’t test me >:(' implication vs ford's 'i have killed and i will do it again' implication
-ford comforting hand on shoulder. stan looking shocked until he sees ford smiling at him. grgaggasgg
-fucking love these two
-stan writes in print in all caps (this might mean nothing to you but trust me there is a reason i'm pointing it out)
-ford doing the hand thing in the credits
-'ford hates mabel' DID YOU MISS THE FUCKING TURKEY
that's it that's all of the thoughts
it can go in the tag cause. why not, y'know?

Of course, it’s not just the 10th Anniversary of Gravity Falls -- it’s Stan and Ford’s birthday, as well! Despite that other project monopolizing my time, I didn’t want to miss doing a piece for this occasion.   So, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our favorite grunkles!  Here, a return to Glass Shard Beach; and wearing their kid outfits, for good measure.
