Summary: With Justice, Anders had become much more sensitive to the presence of mana and pieces of the Fade in the waking world—and with Hawke’s help, even more so. Every enchanted object tickled his senses, any spell cast in close proximity would make shivers run down his spine, and every mage’s mana now seemed unique and unmistakable, a clear signature of any mage he met.
Which is why it was strange for him to to sense Hawke’s mana in a way so unlike how the man presented himself. When idle, Hawke’s mana was the whispers of snow, the steadfast serenity of ice, the deceptive calm before a tempest, and yet—it never manifested as such.
For the life of him, Anders couldn't think of any good reason as to why.

Hoorah, hoorah, the time has finally come! I’m sure it won’t be the only one, as we welcome the sign-ups for the 2022 Handers Gift Exchange!
The sign-up sheet is now LIVE and available here! As a reminder, this exchange is open to all forms of creative output - art, fanmixes, fic and edits are all equally welcome. If you have any questions that aren’t covered in the FAQ below please do feel free to get in touch - I’m always happy to help!
Sign-ups are open until Sunday June 5th, with gifts assigned the next Monday. Check-ins will be held over the weekend of the 2nd/3rd July with the final deadline for all gifts to be posted Friday 29th July at the latest!
I’ll be bumping this post over the next few weeks - hope to see you all in the sign-up sheet! Last time this exchange led to an astonishing 55 Hawke/Anders gifts on AO3 - so let’s see if we can beat that in the name of our favourite feathermage!
FAQ under readmore:
Q. When will assignments go out, and when is my gift due?
A. Assignments will be sent out the day after sign-ups close (so keep an eye on your inboxes on the Monday June 6th!). You’ll be required to complete and share your gift prior to the Friday 29th July. That’ll give you just over seven weeks to finish a gift!
Q. Will there be check-ins?
A. Yes. I’ll be checking in with all participants halfway through the exchange - so on or around the 2nd/3rd of July. If you are struggling to complete a gift or haven’t started by then I would strong encourage you to flag this to me so that we can arrange a pinch-hitter if necessary. I understand that life happens, so I won’t hold it against you if you need to drop out - I just want to be sure that your recipient still gets a gift!
Q. How do I share my gift?
A. All gifts should be posted on AO3 and on tumblr. If you do not have an AO3 account please contact me and we will handle matters from there. Gifts should be posted to the 2022 Handers Gift Exchange collection on AO3 (I’ll send a link when I send you your gift assignment). Your recipient should be clearly tagged. Tumblr posts should tag in the handers-time blog so that I can find it to reblog it.
Q. How big should my gift be?
A. This is a difficult one to quantify, but for fic I have set a minimum word count of 1,000 words. This represents approximately 2-3 hours of work for an average person and artists and editors should therefore loosely consider this a benchmark.
Extra gifts - written as optional add-ons after you’ve completed your main gift - can be much smaller with a minimum word count of 250 words. There is no maximum word count for main gifts or for extra gifts so if you’ve got the War & Peace of Hawke/Anders in you bursting to be let loose then go for it - we’ll all be excited to see it!
Q. Is this an anonymous gift exchange?
A. No. You can post to the collection whenever you feel like it and on tumblr too. Just please don’t tell your giftee that you have them until after you’ve posted your gift!
Q. Are there any rules about commenting?
A. Yes. You must comment on any gift written for you. For a full gift, this should be a comment of at least 3 lines in length.
Q. I don’t want to sign up to the exchange but I’d like to produce extra gifts. What do I do?
Lovely to have you! We share the complete list of requests after sign-ups publicly - you can keep an eye on this blog for it. Anyone can create an extra treat - you do not need to be a member of the full exchange. Otherwise if you’d like the request spreadsheet emailed to you for premium gift giving, you can sign up as normal using the form above, but in the requests box just put ‘N/A - I’m here for the extra gifts’. I’ll send you the complete spreadsheet of requests when it’s ready and you can pick and choose which extra gifts to write at your leisure.
Extra gifts have a lower minimum word count (250, or 1 hours’ drawing) and you can produce as many as you like. If you’re signing up to the exchange and would prefer not to receive extra gifts, please note that in the relevant section of the form.

Rules:

“I - there was, there was a rumor about a qunari attack at the Chateau.” He almost tripped over the chair again, caught only by Hawke’s quick thinking and quicker hands.
She righted him with a fond pat on the ass. “One qunari - okay, like ten, but mostly it was one, and she was an elf, so -” she shrugged. “Got covered in wyvern spit, saved a dog, desecrated a grave, and really pissed off Carver too, that was fun. Oh, and I punched some guy - no, two guys? Maybe it was the same guy twice; they were wearing masks.”

I was so torn on which to write of the three prompts I got, and of course once I settled on one I started it... and restarted it..... and restarted it.....
which is to say this is like my fourth attempt at telling the story I wanted to tell OTL. I really hope you enjoy it!
Kingsway, 9:34 Dragon
Three and a half weeks after the Arishok’s death in the Keep, Anders had come to the manor as usual—but not alone. Climbing up through the estate cellars with him was a girl, maybe twelve or thirteen. The poor thing constantly glanced over her shoulder as if she was afraid someone had followed them up, and her clothes looked like they’d been cut for someone several inches taller and a fair bit wider. Hawke set her up in the kitchen with some proper food, then pulled Anders out into the hall.
“So,” she said in a low voice, “where’d you find her?”
Anders shook his head. “She came to the clinic. Begged me to hide her—wouldn’t say from what, of course.” He paused, just for a moment, then added, “But if I had to guess, I’d put my money on templars.”
“You think she’s—?”
A shrug. “Either way, no one will think to look for her here.”
Hawke snorted and replied, “Not tonight, at any rate. But if she is a mage… I mean, I’m not going to send her to the Gallows, but I can’t teach her.”
Anders gave her a look somewhere between fondness and exasperation. “I wouldn’t ask you to.”
“Good. I mean, if she wants to learn how to fight with a sword, that I can do, but—”
“Hawke.”
She flashed him a grin. “Let’s find out one way or the other, shall we?”
Her instincts had been correct; when they returned, the girl had scarfed down every last crumb of the food Hawke had presented her. Either she was from a family that could barely afford to feed her, or she’d been on her own for a few days. Both seemed equally likely, with what little information she had to work with. With a friendly smile, Hawke sat down in the chair opposite the girl, while Anders leaned back against the worktable in the center of the kitchen. “I think introductions are in order,” Hawke said brightly. “You’ve met Anders already, of course, and I’m Hawke.”
The girl stared at her for a moment or two, then asked quietly, “I heard it was a woman named Hawke who saved us from the Qunari. Was that you?”
She nodded. “That’s me. And who are you?”
Immediately, like a door slamming shut, the girl’s expression turned guarded. “I’m no one.”
“Okay, no one,” Hawke replied, unfazed. “You can hide here. This manor has a dozen bedrooms and I’m only one person, so Maker knows there’s plenty of room. But I can’t protect you if I don’t know who or what I’m protecting you from.”
The girl hesitated. Without looking at either of them, she drew her legs up to her chest and hugged them tight, visibly warring with herself for several long minutes. Then, finally, in a tiny, sad voice, “They were going to send me to the Gallows.”
Hawke sighed. “I won’t let that happen,” she said firmly. “Now, are you sure you want me to call you no one forever?”
This got her a weak laugh. “Millie,” the girl said. “You can call me Millie.”

AND ANOTHER THING!!!
I want to punch Jod in the mouth for like, ten billion or so things, but rn I'm just fucking pissed at him for taking Gideon's identity and just erasing it.
"Gideon Nav? No no, that's not your name. Kiriona Gaia, that's much better, much more suited for the child of God. I didn't know you existed until like an hour ago but that doesn't matter, now you have a much better first name and a proper diminutive of my last name (which isn't even my original last name it's one I gave myself after ascending with the soul of the literal Earth but anyway) instead of that ugly Ninth House name.
Speaking of the Ninth House, here's some new duds that are as far from black as absolutely possible. And some flowers for your hair. Isn't that better? Not so dreary.
Your sword? Of course, here's a sword for you. A two-hander? No, no, you'll take a rapier, it's much better. [Speaking of, where the fuck IS Gideon's sword?]
Cavalier? No, no, now you're a Tower Prince.
The cohort? Oh sure, you can have an honorary title.
Never mind that you're inhabiting your body as a ghost, that you don't need to eat or drink or sleep or feel human in any way. You're above that! You're my child. You're my heir. (You're mine and will do what I say without question because why would you defy someone who gave you so many gifts? You're not of the Ninth House, you're of me.)
Now, sweetie, would you mind doing me a teeny little favor? Go back to the Ninth and destroy the thing they hold dear. Yes of course you'll be safe- I've made your skin into armor and your blood into ash and left a gaping maw where your heart was, don't you feel fearsome? And once it's done you'll be my cavalier. No, I don't care about immortality anymore. My fingers definitely aren't crossed behind my back.
Haven't I been nothing but kind to you? Haven't you seen me at my most vulnerable?
Don't you trust me?"
And of course Gideon takes takes it, because she's never been anyone's child before. She's never had someone extend their hand in offering or their voice in praise. But now the most important guy in the universe is giving her everything she ever wanted and more, and if in exchange she has to give up everything she knew and everything she was then fine. Nobody on the Ninth ever loved her, and her mother certainly didn't love her, but he says he does.

WIP Whenever
Hi! Thank you so much to @wardenkay for tagging me :D
I was tagged like 2 weeks ago but I didn't have anything to share until right now so here's a little snippet of something I'm writing for a Handers request I got today!
The revelation that Edan, the legendary Hero of Ferelden and a longtime companion of Anders, had ascended to the role of Inquisitor was astounding in its own right. However, the bigger surprise came when he extended an unexpected plea for Hawke's assistance, offering in exchange a safe haven for the two fugitives.
The difference could be felt the moment they breached Skyhold's gates; high walls and sentries to keep out those who wished to harm, mages roaming freely, tending to display their wares, practicing their crafts freely alongside those without the gift all without shame or persecution. It was an ease, a calm, a sense of community like he had never witnessed before. It was like, for the first time, he could breathe easily.
On the morning after their arrival, they had locked fingers in the hallways, stood upon their balcony and kissed without a care, reveled in their freedom and belonging, their right to love like any other, breaking only when summoned for their meeting.
Standing atop the battlements where the warm rays licked his skin and the cool breeze lifted his hair, Anders watched on in silence as Hawke and Edan spoke of their agendas, the threats, the path forward. There was no rest for the people of Thedas, no less for Hawke, but for once their roads ahead didn't seem so bleak even in the face of such dire and tumultuous circumstances. Hawke must have felt it too, his broad shoulders were squared and his voice firm and assured, the offered safety had brought that dashing light back to his eyes that long gone out. Anders couldn't help but be drawn to that fire that he missed so dearly and there was no denying that he loved a man of confidence and action.
A lot of people I would have tagged have already been tagged in similar things recently so how about this: Everyone can consider themselves tagged! I would love to see anything anyone is working on :)

I've started cowriting an omegaverse eventual Fenders that's 20k words already and they haven't kissed.
I really liked the transfem Hawke I wrote for the Handers exchange, so I might do more with her.
There will eventually be a sequel to the Alpha!Anders fic I wrote (someone threatened to riot if I didn't).
I've been casually advising / cowriting a Tabris Twins AU because one of you crazy fuckers likes my feral wet cat Ris enough to drag her into his world too.
✅️ baths/bathing. Not even sexually (though that happens too). Washing up/helping someone else get clean is just a UNF kind of intimacy that I can’t stay away from.
