Honestly hand to hand combat fight scenes are just... so much better than CGI filled monstrocities of bullshit. The bus scene in Shang-Chi, the fights between Bucky and Steve/Natasha in Winter Soldier, actually most scenes in Winter Soldier, the casino scene in Black Panther, all of them. CGI looks cheap and tacky and rushed and hollow. Hand to hand? You can feel the characters move, see them interact even if it’s physically, you can see all the details and it feels so much more fluid. Does it always have to be perfectly realistic? No, of course not. But it feels so much more alive than does CGI scenes. Especially in movies like Black Widow and Shang-Chi, they should have very little CGI imo. It hurts the movies a lot. Hand to hand looks much better.

Country of Origin: China

History: Sanda (sometimes referred to as Wushu, Wushu Sanda, Sanda Kung Fu, Sanshou, or even simply Chinese Kickboxing) has roots in Chinese Lei tai fights, a brutal, 1000+ year old Chinese tradition of bare knuckle fights that often proved lethal.

When the Republic of China (1912-1949) wanted to develop a hand to hand combat system for their military in the 1920’s, they turned to lei tai to have a basis. However, there is one major problem inherent to any lethal martial art; it’s lethal. Studies show soldiers are significantly less useful if they die in basic training. So, they had to make it something safe enough to train, as well as add elements from imported martial arts like Western boxing and wrestling. Following the Chinese Communist Revolution, it not only became the PLA’s main system of martial arts training, but it has expanded beyond military use into becoming a sport with tournaments all over the world. While Communist regimes may not be good for much, as we’ve learned both here and in our previous entry (Sambo), they’ve undoubtedly given the world some unique and powerful martial arts.

Nov. 3— Lured from the stronghold they had stubbornly held against provincial police for six hours, four sons of Mrs. Francis Carrier were today with their mother in Sudbury district Jail after a blood-letting hand-to-hand struggle. A fifth member of the Carrier clan, youngest son, escaped to the bush.

Armed with warrants for the arrest of the Carrier family, on charges of forcible possession, four Provincial Police officers camped on the road in front of the farmhouse, unable to get beyond the gate under threat a "bullet would be put Into the radiator of their car.” 

The five brothers, Francis, Rosaire, Lucienne, Henri and Pierre parleyed with the officers but remained adamant In their refusal to vacate the premises they allegedly occupied by force and police retired to a house across the road, where they found Mrs. Carrier. 

Sergeant A. R. Knight arrived with reinforcements for the police and a plan to get the boys out of their fort. Seizing Mrs. Carrier, police paraded down the road, their prisoner screaming and kicking in their arms.

Bent on rescuing their mother, the five sons dashed from the house armed with axes, hammers, knives, and sticks. A wild melee followed, during which Constable P. J. Poland received a bad gash on the face from a wielded claw-hammer. Four of the brothers were overpowered but Pierre, the youngest, escaped to the adjacent bush. 

Mrs. Carrier and her four sons were taken to Sudbury district Jail and will appear In police court today. 

Behind yesterday's activities lies the action of Francis Carrier, sr., and his sons of more than a week ago. Carrier and his sons, claiming as his by right of inheritance, took possession of a farm operated by the Desrosiers estate, ejecting the tenants therefrom.
