Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864-1916) Danish
1      Interior, Sunlight on the Floor (1906)
2      Interior (1899)
A      Hanne Finsen & Inge Vibeke Raaschou-Nielsen (1981)
light is the principal subject…and that light is the meagre Danish winter light, the light of grey weather quite without color, warmth, or gaiety, albeit so rich in nuance…There is a light that pours in over the canvas and defines the space…The light is usually indirect for, of course, Hammershøi also knows that indirect light is often the most beautiful…

As in this case, the interiors by the Danish artist Hammershoi are usually of his own house in Copenhagen. Several others also include a figure seen from behind, but many are of the empty rooms. He travelled and exhibited in Europe, and was well known in London early in this century. He had lived here in 1896-7, partly in the hope of meeting Whistler, whom he admired.

'How I loved her! How happy we were! But he who accepts human love must bind it to his soul with pain, and she is not lost to me. Nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it.'
― Lucy Maud Montgomery, in 'The Golden Road', Chapter XXVII, 'The Old Order Changeth'
"A Mother and Child at a Window"
By Carl Holsøe (Danish, 1863-1935)
oil on canvas; 57.5 x 54.2 cm (22.6 x 21.3 in.)
Private Collection
Overview:
"The present lot is an archetypal interior of a school of painting which also included the artist's friends and contemporaries, the brothers-in-law Vilhelm Hammershøi and Peder Ilsted. All three artists were members of 'The Free Exhibitio' a modernist art society established in Copenhagen at the end of the 19th century.
Their art could be traced back via the Biedermeier interiors of their Danish Golden Age forebears, such as Wilhelm Eckersberg, all the way back to Dutch art of the 17th century, in particular the work of artists such as Johannes Vermeer.
All three artists typically drew inspiration from their own domestic surroundings, often including their spouses, represented as a solitary figure, almost invariably painted side-on or from behind, and meditatively involved in quiet pursuits such as reading.
Their homes are represented as sanctuaries, havens of peace far removed from the hustle and bustle of an outside world that is usually only hinted at by a shaft of light from a window which is often unseen.
However, whereas Hammershøi’s oeuvre was characterised by a combination of asceticism and Symbolism, typically depicting sparsely furnished interiors executed in a muted palette of greys and whites, Holsøe’s paintings stressed the material qualities and richness of his domestic surroundings." ― Find out more https://bit.ly/3xud8Eg | Source: Christie's, London
About the Artist:
In 1886, Holsøe made his debut at the Charlottenberg December exhibition with an interior scene, a subject for which he was to become renowned. Interior scenes, often sparsely furnished rooms were a feature of Danish painting in the latter part of the 19th Century.
Vilhelm Hammershoi (1864-1916) a contemporary of Holsøe was also a painter who specialised in such scenes, frequently, like Holsøe including a single, invariably, female figure. Holsøe achieves a defined space in these interiors through harmonious colours, subdued light and the careful juxtaposition of objects.
He was enormously popular throughout Scandinavia and the rest of Europe, receiving an honourable mention at the Universal Exposition in Paris in 1889 and a medal at the Munich Exhibition of 1891. His works can be found in museums in: Copenhagen and Munich.

Danish painter, Vilhelm Hammershøi (May 15, 1864 - 1916) demonstrated better than most state of the art techniques of social distancing already 130 years ago...
Hammershøi has risen to international fame for his cool, gray-toned interiors, often featuring a female figure with her back turned. He has inspired music, photography and cinematography since his rise to fame in the 1990s/2000s.
During his lifetime Hammershøi was friends with poets such as Rilke, and admired by peers such as Renoir…

"...and if at last [the messenger] should burst through the outermost gate - but never, never can that happen - the imperial capital would lie before him, the center of the world, crammed to bursting with its own sediment. Nobody could fight his way through here even with a message from the dead emperor. But you sit at your window when evening falls and dream it to yourself." ~ Franz Kafka, "An Imperial Message" [Interior, Light of Spring - Carl Holsøe]
• Franz Kafka was born into a middle-class, German-speaking Jewish family on July 3, 1883 in Prague, Bohemia, now the Czech Republic. Franz was the eldest of six children. He had two younger brothers who died in infancy and three younger sisters (Gabriele (1889–1941), Valerie (1890–1942), Ottilie (1892–1943), all of whom perished in concentration camps. His father, Hermann Kafka (1852–1931), was described as a huge ill-tempered domestic tyrant, who on many occasions directed his anger towards his son and was disrespectful towards his escape into literature. More: https://www.kafka-online.info/franz-kafka-biography.htm
• Enormously popular in his native Scandinavia and throughout the rest of Europe during his lifetime, Carl Holsøe had studied with Vilhelm Hammershoi at the Royal Academy of Copenhagen and, together with Peder Ilsted, they formed the Danish School of Interior Painting. Their influence on one another is palpable in works such as Interior, Light of Spring. It epitomizes the effects for which they are most celebrated: an atmosphere that is dense, introspective, and immensely alluring to a modern aesthetic. Fini Henriques (Oct. 20, 1867 - 1940) was a Danish composer of popular classical music. He was a trained violinist (under Joseph Joachim) and mainly composed for that instrument and for small string ensembles, in addition to songs and piano music.
He was good friends with Carl Nielsen from an early age, and also associated with the Schumann circle.
His portrait was painted by Vilhelm Hammershoi in 1896 and is held at Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen.

On a Roll, another Vilhelm Hammershoi painting. He was born in Copenhagen in 1864. Love the muted tones and exquisite Danish antiques in his work. Found this one @helenachristensen #hammershoi #mutedtones #danish #antiques #beautifuloldthings #lavender #oldpaintings
