Mesklin from Hal Clement's Mission of Gravity.
Mesklin is 16 times the mass of Jupiter, made of ice and rock, with 8atm of methane, and a rotational period of about 17 minutes. Its surface gravity varies over its surface due to centrifugal forces, from 700G at the poles to 3G at the equator.

NEEDLE [aka FROM OUTER SPACE] by Hal Clement. (New York: Doubleday, 1950) Cover by Hector Garrido.
The book broke new ground in the science fiction field by postulating an alien lifeform, not hostile, which could live within the human body. A similar plotline was used in the film The Hidden.

'Cycle of Fire' Bridges Worlds With Relationships
'Cycle of Fire' is an underrated classic of hard SF. An excellent example of how brains exceeds brawn and how openness and understanding accomplishes more than suspicion and mistrust. #sf #scifi #books #bookreview
Cycle of Fire (1957) by Hal Clement (Harry Clement Stubbs) tells a story of survival on a hostile world. The novel uses thoughtfulness and ingenuity over raw action to achieve its aims. More than mere pedagogy, Cycle of Fire makes an emotional connection with the reader. Dar Lang Ahn is dying. But he’s dying sooner than he should. Having crashed his glider he tries to complete his mission and…

Galactic Gazetteer: Mesklin
Tumblr media
Primary: Belne
Rotational period (day): 18 minutes
Gravity: 3g to 200g
Atmosphere: hydrogen
Oceans: methane
Inhabitants: Mesklinites
First appearance: "Mission of Gravity" (Hal Clement, 1953)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fun fact: Mesklin has an incredibly elliptical shape due to its rapid spin, with gravity vastly stronger at the equator than the poles. The native Mesklinites are uniquely adapted to this environment.

The Capps (Winter 2011)
Left to right: Hermia (22), Juliette (24), Elena/Ellen (26), Tybalt (26), Regan (36), Constantin (6), Cornwall (42), Ariel (9), Clement (3), Goneril (43), Albany (54), Miranda (22), Hal (16) and Desdemona (15).
The only Capps (by birth) missing are Regan's youngest Cosima (1) who is simply too little, and Kent (31) who doesn't feel welcome at family gatherings anymore since his fallout with his late father Consort (but perhaps his relationship with his sisters is still salvageable).

HEY EVERYONE
So, to preface this: My father passed away earlier this year. We have been cleaning things out as much as we can, bit by bit. He was a hoarder and was only hampered by the fact that my mother wouldn't let him dominate the house with EVERYTHING.
This meant he did not throw away ANYTHING at all. So here's something interesting.
Tumblr media
in ye olden times before the internet, there were 'zines. And this was the collection of hand-written and drawn, then xeroxed...Star Trek Smut.
Specifically pertaining to Spock. It's WILD that this survived and is in as good of a condition as it is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1972, as you can see. And Hal Clement (author of Needle) contributed to this collection! (His article is not pictured here, but its still cool!)
Tumblr media
I'm sure this is of great interest to some people, how the 70s thought this stuff should go.
Tumblr media
Here's some art! There is more but it is not safe to post here, lest staff kicks me. Unless I'm allowed to post stuff like that again, now?
Anyways, Where will this go? Museum of Popular Culture; They Have A Vulcan Harp!!
This one, not the Seattle one
