CONSTANTINE: DISTORTED ILLUSIONS - Written by Kami Garcia, Illustrated by Isaac Goodhart

CONSTANTINE is about a young John Constantine who has great magical potential but is apathetic enough to throw it all away. He hides any feelings in his music, instead of facing his feelings towards his father, stepfather, mother, and anyone who challenges this safe bubble he's made for himself. When he steals a spellbook from an expert magician offering to train him, He's forced to challenge his own pride when the use of those spells gets him and his friends in over their heads.

The writing resonated with me at the time when I had read this since I had recently become aware of how easily I mirrored, masked, or camouflaged around other people to avoid social consequences. I really understood John Constantine's desire to close people off to avoid haertache and disappointment and how much of each you create more of by running from it. I also appreciated the hopeful ending. Sometimes, the people who are in our corner are hard to find, but sometimes, they'll be right under our nose.

The illustration and character design are so beautiful. I'm an Isaac Goodhart stan, and this will not be the last time I will be gushing over his work, but there is something unique about his style that I can't quite name but definitely sticks out in a world of magic and punk-rock.

TRIGGER WARNINGS (with potential spoilers) -

1) Apathy - I said before that reading this was useful to me, but it might be harder if you're not in the right headspace

2) Whitchraft - as far as I can remember, most supernatural things were given pretty vanilla names like "magic", "magicians", "spells", and "spirits", but it alludes to Whitchraft, summoning circles, possession, and pentagram. I'm not an expert on how accurately any of it's handled, but I know any allusion to it will turn certain readers away.

3) Language - this one's tricky because I tune it out. In the future, I will be more careful to represent the amount accurately. There is language around the range of an infrequent b-word, but it's written for a "young adults" audience, so keep that in mind.
