you know anfortas, our best friend anfortas alberich, the regent king of khaenri'ah whose fate remains a mystery? anfortas is the name of the fisher king in arthurian legends, the one who guarded the holy grail.

apparently t.s. eliot wrote a poem titled the waste land that combines the legend of the holy grail and the fisher king. what caught my eye here is the footnote he made:

wanting to create a show about a band composed of college students who aren't. immensely popular. as they have around less than a thousand monthly listeners and less than two thousand streams (on spotify). but people know them well enough around their college. and in one of the episodes they get a tumblr poll made about them to the effect of "which member of [band name] is the hottest" and they completely freak out about it and do that thing that generally happens in shows where. at first they pretend not to care about it but then start fighting about it and at the end of the episode they just go. well. you know what. the end result doesn't matter. it's fine. but then the poll ends up to be very disproportionate and veer specifically towards the very limp and pathetic drummer who didn't think they'd win at all and then. everyone glares at them like they're going to kill them. end credits !!

backstory

Arling was born into a poor family with god only knows how many other siblings. It wasn't a good childhood. And it didn't get any better when Arling was sold off to the Circus.

And not the kind with funny clowns and amazing acrobatics. The Cruel Circus travels across both Faerie and Hell, featuring performances and attractions appealing only to the darkest, most violent, vile fairies and demons. Leaving the gruesome details of Arling's time in the opera to the imagination, but safe to say it was nothing less than torture.

Most troupers don't make it through their first year, but there's no quitting the Circus. Whether it's giving in to the crushing conditions, abuse, dangerous acts, or by becoming a snuff show themselves, the only way out is death. But the Ringmaster had taken a particular interest in Arling, allowing them comforts and privileges few other troupers ever saw.

Which is how Arling was able to steal an opportunity to leave. Trusted and close enough to be left alone with the Ringmaster, and even to serve him meals and snacks, Arling was able to poison his tea one night. After stabbing the vile Ringmaster for good measure, Arling ran. No money, nothing to their name but the clothes on their back, they set their sights on Capitol and put the Cruel Circus behind them.

But despite their best efforts, it takes more than that to kill a demon.

When Arling had been sold off, their True Name had been given away as well. And with that information, Ringleader was able to place a curse of Bad Luck upon them, even after Arling had fled.

Now, somewhere just over a year later, Arling is trying their best to finally start their life, living along with the two unlikely companions they'd found on their journey to the Capitol and working at, that's right, Fantasy Tarjay, despite their curse, their trauma, and the bounty on their head.
