Old Shotgun Revival
Tumblr media
I recently had the pleasure of embarking on a pretty significant adventure in the gunsmithing world. A friend of mine brought me an old pump 12 gauge shotgun that he had recently acquired. This particular shotgun was sitting in a corner, collecting rust and cobwebs. Apparently the previous owner had some problems with it and attempted to try and repair it, but failed miserably. The shotgun looked like it would never function again and was missing some pretty significant parts, mainly the magazine tube assembly. I agreed and said I would do what I could do in order to try and bring this old shotgun back to it's former glory.
Tumblr media
I started researching what particular type of shotgun this was. It’s a cheap box store shotgun made by Stevens/Savage. It’s what’s called a Model 67 E series. These shotguns have a classic look to them, but are not highly valuable. After some hunting around, I was able to source a used magazine tube and a new magazine spring and follower. Once I was able to source the parts needed, I proceeded to use my Brownells MagnaTip set to properly tear down the shotgun. It was obvious base on the damage to the screws that someone had attempted to repair the shotgun sometime in the past. The MagnaTip set from Brownells has seemingly every size bit to minimize damage to those old screws. One item that stuck out to me was the spring for the slide lock seemed mangled. It actually fell out while disassembling the receiver. It took much time researching that part, but I found the proper profile and re-installed it and got the action working once again.
Tumblr media
The other huge task was trying to remove the rust on the shotgun to reveal the nice bluing underneath. Luckily there didn’t seem to be much evidence of pitting. My method to remove rust from a blued surface is to take 0000 bronze wool saturated with oil or penetrating oil. I prefer to use Kroil from Brownells whenever possible. Kroil does a great job at penetrating the best in my experience. It took quite a bit of time, but I was able to revive the bluing from all of the metal parts. It was hard to believe how nice this old shotgun was starting to look after spending a good amount of time on it.
Tumblr media
Once all back together, it was time for some function testing followed by a good range test. I have some 12gauge training dummies, so I cycled those through the action and once I was satisfied with the function and safety in a closed environment, it was time for a good range test and live fire test. I had on hand a 25shot box of Fiocchi clay loads and it shot them perfectly! The only issue I had was on a couple of rounds the new shell hung up a tad on the loading gate. Most likely just picky with those particular shells. What a beautiful old shotgun! Was hard to believe it had come so far… already looking to see if I could find another old project like this to jump into.

Why Work With The Pros at Lone Star Gunsmithing
When it comes to guns, there are three very good reasons why you should work with a licensed professional at Lone Star Gunsmithing. The first reason is that gunsmiths know how to repair broken guns. Broken guns may be clogged with rust or jammed with unwanted grips, compromised triggers, etc. this is where a gunsmith can come in handy and fix them for you right! The second reason is that we'll be able to work on your antique firearms. This may even mean restoring your gun to its antique glory. Believe it or not, there are some older firearms out there that still have great sentimental value. If you had kept the gun around long enough, there is a good chance that it could be worth a lot of money. The third reason is that we'll be able to work with different guns depending upon what you want done. For instance if you want to custom rifle or pistol grips for your gun, then we're able to do that. If you have an old typewriter that needs some new material applied to it, you can get a gunsmith to do that also. Heck, even if you want to put a new sight system made and installed on your gun then we may be able to retrofit a sight on your gun for you as well. As you can see, gunsmithing has a lot of uses. The main reason why you would want to work with a gunsmith is to get your gun repaired so that it works the way it was meant to work while being safe and dependable every single time. Another reason is so that you can have your gun made to your own request. Now that we have looked at those reasons, hopefully you now understand why you would want to work with a gunsmith. Another reason why you may want to work with a gunsmith is because professional gunsmiths will be able to fix the damage to your gun that you have accidentally done. Often times people will do their own trigger jobs or other modifications not realizing it may negatively affect other firearm systems. This can be frustrating or worse, deadly. Finally, there are guns that are custom modified or repaired and will be superior to virtually any brand you can buy at alost any price at a big box store. Find out more by contacting Lone Star Gunsmithing. Read the full article

There is no definitive answer to this question as laws vary from country to country. In the United States, for example, it is generally legal to make your own firearms for personal use, but there are some restrictions on manufacturing guns for sale or distribution. In other countries, such as Australia, it is illegal to manufacture firearms without a license. So, it is important to research the laws in your own country, before attempting to build a gun with a CNC machine. Where to find CNC Gun Plans There are a few places where you can find CNC gun plans. One is to look on the search engines, and you will find websites that focus on DIY gun smithing projects. For example, you can easily find websites with free CNC gun manufacturing plans, such as this one, here. You can also check out forums devoted to gun enthusiasts, as they may have links to downloadable plans. Finally, you can try contacting companies that sell CNC machines; some of them may be willing to sell you plans for making guns. Whatever route you take, make sure you do your research so that you end up with high-quality plans that will result in a functional firearm. How to use and operate a CNC machine safely and effectively Assuming you have a working knowledge of how to use a CNC machine, the following tips will help you operate it safely and effectively: - Make sure that all safety guards are in place and in good condition before starting the machine. - Keep your hands clear of moving parts while the machine is in operation. - Be careful when removing finished workpieces from the machine, as they may be sharp. - Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when operating a CNC machine. This includes safety goggles, gloves, ear protection, etc. - Follow all safety procedures and signs posted in the area around the machine. - Never attempt to reach into or touch any part of the machine while it is in operation. - If you need to adjust anything on the machine, make sure to first turn it off and unplug it from its power source. - If you are not familiar with how to operate a CNC machine, do not attempt to do so without proper training and supervision. When it comes to choosing the best CNC machine for gun manufacturing, there is no easy answer. However, by considering the factors outlined above, you can narrow down your options and choose the best machine for your specific needs. Read the full article

What is a Trigger Job
Tumblr media
What is a Trigger Job and How Does it Help My Pistol?
A trigger job isn't just about making the trigger lighter. It can also make it easier to follow up shots, avoid jerking, and make groups narrower. Obviously, it won't make you a great shooter, but it can help you control the trigger. Read on to learn how it works and why it's worth considering. Here are the benefits and advantages of a trigger job. Trigger break If you're unfamiliar with the term "trigger break," it is a reference to the point when the hammer and striker release from the sear. When
Tumblr media
firing a loaded firearm, you will hear a "bang" or "click" and feel a small vibration. The trigger will then release the stored energy in the striker and hammer, firing the pistol. Many shooters prefer a "clean" break, in which the trigger snaps under finger pressure. Otherwise known as "mushy" or "cracked," this is an undesirable condition, as it limits your control and accuracy. In addition to avoiding shot anticipation, a good trigger helps shooters hit targets in a consistent manner. A smooth, short take-up trigger helps shooters get the most out of their shots. Shooters should avoid jerking the trigger or using the surprise break method. The best way to avoid the former is to shoot slower, and then let the trigger "snap" as the target draws nearer. Trigger break, also known as the release, must be sharp and crisp. Any excessive mush will limit the accuracy potential of a pistol. The greater the mush, the more mushiness there is in the gun. Overtravel, or "backlash," is another problem. A CZ 75 pistol has a modest amount of backlash, while a Kriss Sphinx CZ clone is appreciably lower.

Index to fire In the practical realm, there are three different techniques for controlling the trigger. Index to fire, firing from the trigger wall, and inflight resetting under recoil. All of these techniques will shorten the prep time for follow-on shots and improve accuracy. Here's a look at how each technique can be used. The most important aspect to remember is that each technique will require practice to become perfect. While index to fire is not the most accurate way to manipulate a gun's trigger, it is effective in split-second situations. The shot will probably hit the target inside an acceptable area. Another way to manipulate the trigger is to "fire from the wall" or place your finger alongside the trigger frame. The goal is to eliminate pre-travel of the trigger. This technique has been found to be useful in unholstered weapons. Pre-travel In a 1911, the Pre-travel trigger job is necessary to ensure that the trigger reaches the half-cock notch and a trip occurs before the slide begins to fall forward. However, some 1911s are designed with too little pre-travel, making this a necessary adjustment. If you are unsure of whether your pistol trigger has enough pre-travel, you should try racking the slide and releasing the trigger while it is at half-cock. The trigger of a pistol can have many problems, ranging from over-traveling to the failure to fire at all. Insufficient trigger adjustment is most common on Ruger pistols. Incorrectly tightening the pre-travel screw will create too much tension in the trigger system. Leaving too much slack can cause the trigger to "break" prematurely and lead to a dead trigger. Incorrect adjustment can also cause the trigger connector bar to angle upwards and rub against the bolt. There are a few different terms for these handgun trigger movements. Some are only applicable to certain kinds of actions. Regardless of their name, they all refer to the same action: resetting the trigger. This trigger movement process is also called Trigger Take-Up or Trigger Slack. Trigger Take-Up does not engage the mainspring or move the sear. It is the first movement of the trigger from its resting position. Trigger slack Trigger slack is a term that describes two characteristics of a single-stage trigger: its lack of pull resistance and the degree to which it slacks. During the initial press of the trigger, the slack is usually light, but as it is pulled, it becomes more firm, indicating that the firing pin has hit the primer on the back of the ammunition. Trigger slack is measured in 1/8-inch increments. The amount of slack in a pistol's trigger is often misinterpreted. In reality, most people discount take-up and pre-travel. In pistols, this loose motion is often referred to as creep, which is not as detrimental as it is in a rifle. Shooters who are not concerned with trigger creep prefer a clean break, where the glass rod snaps under the finger pressure. Shooters who don't experience a clean break may have a "mushy trigger," meaning that the trigger doesn't fire properly. In a two-stage pistol, the slack in the trigger is built in. When the shooter pulls the trigger, the slack is removed by increasing the pressure to break it. Two-stage triggers are useful in precision rifles, which need only a small amount of pressure to fire. But with a single-stage pistol, you need to maintain a proper trigger slack between the take-up and the break.

Trigger springs Trigger springs play an important role in a pistol's trigger pull and performance. They help control the power of the pistol's action and help it eject the bullet more quickly. Each pound of recoil spring varies the ejection distance. A spring that is too heavy will result in a muzzle rise while a spring that is too light will cause the slide stop pin to be stressed. Different guns require different springs, so experimenting is the best way to find out what works best for your pistol. The OEM recoil spring for a full-size 9mm CZ pistol weighs 17 pounds, while the one found in compact metal framed CZ pistols uses 16 pounds. The CZ P07 and P09 use 20 pounds. Trigger springs are essentially springs that push against the hammer when the trigger is pulled. When the trigger is pulled, the spring forces the hammer to come back to the muzzle. This process is crucial for a firearm's function. While no two springs are the same, some common design elements are the same. This article will describe the most common types of springs found in firearms. Trigger pull When examining a firearm, the trigger pull can give an indication of how difficult it is to fire a gun. Trigger pull ranges vary for different types of firearms. However, in order to accurately test a gun, examiners should determine the cause of a variation in trigger pull that is out of the factory specifications. By determining the reason for the variation, examiners can identify the underlying problem. The trigger pull of a handgun is almost as important as the sights and grip. In most cases, a pistol trigger can be adjusted to enhance feel and aid accuracy. In this article, we will take a look at the basics of trigger pulls and answer common questions about them. To begin with, let's define trigger pull. A lighter trigger pull is more comfortable and increases accuracy. A trigger weight should be around four pounds. Another important feature of a handgun trigger is that it allows many rounds to fire on a single pull. This is better than the cycling action that occurs when a firearm cycles through several rounds. Many firearms today offer second strike features. These features have been popularized by some manufacturers, such as the Taurus PT 24/7 Pro pistol. Another example of a pistol with second strike is the Walther P99 Anti-Stress. Read the full article

So I thought I'd save money by buying reman ammo... what could ever go wrong?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh yes, my entire .300blk Tavor, which was my unicorn gun and almost impossible to replace now locking up and needing to get mortared and bonked with a hammer to the point freeing it up sheered the charging handle in two. So I bought a .300blk no go guage to test my Tavor with and the bolt maybe closed[?] I could pull the trigger and the hammer fell but then it all locked up again, luckily only needing the gentlest basically setting it down roughly from knee height mortaring to dislodge it. the rollers on my other X95's [the one this .300blk barrel came from] barrel lockgave out and i had to send it to IWI to fix so now i'm afraid to take the barrel off but i'm also paranoid about the headspace and the gas block even though my LGS gunsmith said the headspace is fine and i looked at the gas block from both front and back and it looks fine as well as the fact there is no marring on the charging handle. i've basically talked myself into an anxiety fit that i don't know how to get out of.

What's a Good Pistol For Home Defense
In these times of intense threats from both international terrorists and domestic "knock and drop" criminals, it is important to have one's self prepared with the right home defense tools and equipment. Remember that having a gun or any other weapon at hand is not enough to guarantee your protection - you must also be properly trained how to use it for that matter. And if the large-scale communal social unrest continues to become worse, and even if you reside in a high-crime neighborhood, then possessing effective and reliable home defense weapons is critical. For this very reason, many people these days are choosing to purchase airsoft guns as their first line of defense against an intruder or aggressor. Indeed, they can be an excellent choice especially when combined with other protective gear such as pads, jackets, and possibly body armor.
Tumblr media
Although many people choose airsoft guns as part of their home defense arsenal, not many are familiar with exactly what these guns really are and what they are used for. Essentially, airsoft guns are just high powered BBs (pellets) fired from an airsoft gun. Today, however, there is more to this type of weapon than meets the eye. While historically these guns were primarily used for target practice, today they can be excellent choices for personal protection. With the right accessories and training, airsoft guns can be an excellent method of self defense. One of the most popular types of these guns is the m9 pistol grip. The m9 is a semi-automatic pistol that fires from the bottom (semi-automatic) or top (double action) of the hand. The semi-automatic feature of this type of gun means that a trigger pull is needed, and unfortunately it is not common place to find good quality trigger pulls in these guns. It is therefore important to understand how and where to place the trigger on your pistol to get the best possible trigger pull for your needs. The goal of any good home defense weapon should be to minimize injuries. Another one of the most popular types of pistol is the shotgun. A shotgun is a fully automatic or semi-automatic weapon that fires shots in rapid succession. Because of its firing capacity, many choose to use shotguns for protection rather than a more powerful personal weapon. Some shotguns also have additional firing modes which allow the user to switch between a shotgun and a full auto mode. Again, due to its firing capacity, this type of weapon is favored for home defense over a more powerful weapon. Handgun laws vary widely from state to state, so if you're considering a handgun for protection, you should make sure that you can legally carry a handgun in the place that you intend to use it. Although most cities have restrictive handgun laws, some cities and states have no legal restrictions whatsoever on the carrying of a handgun. Before buying a handgun, it is best to check with your local law enforcement to ensure that the weapon is legal where you reside. While some argue that owning a handgun is a right guaranteed by the second amendment, others disagree, claiming that the law infringes on the right to keep and bear arms. A common choice for a personal defense gun is the pistol. Many people feel that a pistol is an easy option to go with, but they are actually quite dangerous if not properly maintained. Pistols are designed to shoot a shot to a specific target at a specific distance. However, improper handling of a pistol can cause serious injury, particularly if it malfunctions or has been improperly modified. To minimize these dangers, you should always ensure that you follow the basic safety rules associated with your pistol, such as taking proper aim, seating the pistol properly, and using the pistol only when you need it. Firearms dealers generally sell both airport and realistic handguns for consumers to purchase. Airsoft guns are replicas of fully automatic weapons, while realistic guns are just that: they look and feel like real guns. Although they are not available to buy in retail stores, many online retailers provide a selection of imitation handguns for sale. Although most of these models are not accessible to buyers without a license, licensed firearms dealers may be able to supply you with a particular model, as well as help you select the best option for your needs. Handgun cartridges are often used in airsoft guns to increase their stopping power. Although real ammunition is typically much more expensive than pistol rounds, they are often more effective at stopping targets. Real ammo is also much more likely to leave behind lead fragments, which can cause significant tissue damage. Because real rounds are typically more expensive, you may want to consider purchasing pistol rounds instead. For added safety, always choose ammunition manufactured by reputable companies. Our Gunsmithing Services can make your gun more reliable and safe while protecting your family. Read the full article
