was doodling a PMD sona on a whim and accidentally uncorked my old obsession with the explorers games

I ended up compiling all of my headcannons about the PMD world into what’s basically an au (though mostly centered around the explorers story because I’ve played that game through countless times as opposed to just once for the others). this includes: (spoilers for the explorers games)

the PMD world being the world of the mainline games, but thousand of years in the future after humans pissed off the gods (legendaries) and got smote (explains presence of man-made pokemon like porygon, etc).

humans do still exist, but in tiny, isolated communities with basically no technology. apricorns went extinct long ago, so they can’t catch pokemon, and tbh they’re extremely frightened of them (think legends arceus but More). that said, there’s enough of them to supply the odd protagonist and to occasionally convince baby mons that they saw a monster in the woods.

related, memory of humans has survived by oral tradition. they usually feature as monsters/boogeymen or serve as a cautionary tale.

the (explorers) Hero is very possibly the last human alive in the dark future. they grew up together with grovyle.

pokemon from different regions/later generations exist on different continents (which I think is almost canon from super, but I’m not sure). they can travel, but it’s rare among mons that don’t have wings/a migration pattern.

darkrai’s influence is what creates the dungeons. mons inside are stuck in a trancelike state due to his nightmares, so they can’t be reasoned with unless you happen to knock the sense back into them (allowing recruitment).

staying in dungeons for too long can lead to losing oneself in the nightmare. this is how the pokemon that populate dungeons originally got there.

darkrai liked the nightmares that resulted from human society (hello man-made horrors) so he is quietly influencing mon society to make the same mistakes. (he has already unleashed capitalism 😔)

there is a type-based musical instrument for every type, forged from arceus’ own plates. I have ideas for a whole postgame arc about them, but I won’t get into it here.

and finally, my favorite:

darkrai gets turned into an alolan ratatta when the dimensional hole shatters around him. he washes up a couple hundred years before the game’s present, gets frozen by froslass, and thaws out alongside scisor. the Hero doesn’t like this rat’s vibe, but he legitimately has amnesia, and they can’t prove anything. 🐀

PMD post explorers of Sky Fanfic and AU brainstorming

Feat, Darkrai primarily but the Future Trio also

Because I want to write a pmd fic about Darkrai and I can’t make up my mind how I want to go about it :/

Premise 1. Five to fifteen years post-game, Darkrai wakens in the future he tried to destroy with no memory of his past intentions. He is found by the Player and their Partner, who, once they realize he has amnesia, decide to give him a chance. As Darkrai slowly recovers who is and who he was, he must find redemption in a time and place where the consequences of his actions are still felt and the Pokémon he hurt are alive to remember it.

Premise 2. The classic; Darkrai gets sent into the past, and either takes the place of the player, the partner pokemon, or joins the duo on their quest to join the explorers guild. Eventually redeeming himself by thwarting his own plan to paralyze the planet. Usually has amnesia but not always.

Premise 3. Instead of the past, Darkrai ends up exactly where no one wants him to be; the dark future he created. Here, the story could have a couple of variants each with their own branching possibilities:

3A. Darkrai meets Grovyle and the Player. At this point in time neither Grovyle or the Player know he is responsible for the planet’s paralysis. No one is aware of this.

- If Darkrai has Amnesia, he is persuaded to help them on their quest.

- If he doesn’t have Amnesia, he stays with them in the hope of sabotaging their efforts.

3B. Darkrai is found by Dusknoir and the sableyes. Depending on your headcanon, Dusknoir may or may recognize him.

- If Darkrai hired Dusknoir through Dialga via manipulation to stop Grovyle and the player, Dusknoir will only view him as a potential ally or recruit for Primal Dialga.

- If Darkrai and Dusknoir have spoken directly to each other in the past, Dusknoir will recognize him, and depending on their past interactions, will either take him under his wing in the hopes that Darkrai will prove as useful an ally as he was when they first met, or take him before Primal Dialga directly. How will Primal Dialga react to the Pokémon who directly caused his insanity? Will some part of him recognize Darkrai? It’s an interesting scenario.

3C. Trapped in the dark future with no memory of how he got there, or that this had been his intention for the world to begin with, Darkrai finds a lost Duskull and begrudgingly adopts him.

Optionally, 3C may also take place in Premise 1 and 2; through a journey of redemption of some sort, Darkrai ends up adopting a member of the future trio, who is a child in the present he finds himself in

Additional notes:

I want to explore the time gears in greater detail. Why were they hidden in caves throughout the continent instead of kept at the summit of Temporal Tower? Did Dialga deliberately hide them, aware that someone was threatening the stability of the tower? Or where they placed in those places to circumvent a different disaster in the distant past, one not caused by Darkrai? Or did Darkrai himself scatter the time gears, and tricked their respective guardians into keeping their locations a secret?

I also want to explore Darkrai’s motivation. His plan in greater depth. It was a bit lacking post game and that’s one of the biggest reason I want to write about him rn

Why doesn't Ingo remember yet in the Enemies to Brothers AU? Is it something similar to what kept Emmet's memories back?

Ingo's amnesia is different from Emmet's.

Emmet's memories got "scrambled" when he went through time with Celebi and Looker. They are still there, just hard to access/decipher. It's sort of the same idea as what happened with the MC of the Time/Darkness PMD games when the MC was separated from Grovyle due to a storm on their trip back through time and their memory was wiped in the process.

In Ingo's case, it was more like the memories were removed. Where there was something, there is now nothing. I think it's very possible that Uxie played a part in his memory loss ( accidentally? maybe, but if Volo was around when Ingo fell through the rip in time and space that he created... ). This is why its so much harder for him to remember things, because its basically like everything has been erased.

Uxie could probably restore his memories, but it would likely be just as overwhelming for Ingo to have them all to return at once as it was for Emmet.

For those of you who don't know, here is Uxie's pokedex entry from Diamond: "Known as "The Being of Knowledge." It is said that it can wipe out the memory of those who see its eyes."

ok heres the au i was talking about

i thought of this one pmd2 au like last week as i was falling asleep but i don't think there's a way to describe it in a non lengthy way so im just gonna try my best here

so it's kinda like a typical swap au where hero (who is still a human) is stealing the time gears and grovyle befriends partner except they both have amnesia. hero's amnesia is not as severe as grovyle's and they remember the mission and where the time gears are, but doesn't remember grovyle or any of the other future pokemon, or even the fact that they came from the future. they still have the injury that they got from darkrai, and they can feel their strength slowly starting to fade, and the injury starting to hurt more and more. not only is the world ending all around them, but they can feel themselves dying.

meanwhile, grovyle, with no memory other than his own name, meets partner and they kinda go through the game like normal for awhile (i like to think they have a sibling dynamic ^_^)

anyway once hero's wanted poster is revealed grovyle recognizes their name but nothing else. he tells partner but no one else until the two of them ask dusknoir about it.

in this case, that convo with dusknoir happens after the wanted poster is revealed. dusknoir was already pretty much convinced that the grovyle in treasure town was the one he knew, but this confirms to him that grovyle has amnesia.

grovyle and partner soon run into hero at the underground lake, but at this point, hero hasn't remembered anything yet, and the scene goes pretty much the same to how it does normally

during the fight at crystal lake, things start to get really out of hand. right when hero is about to land a devastating attack on grovyle, they start to remember who he is. they kind of panic and end up knocking out grovyle anyway, and when they try to attack partner, dusknoir appears to stop them. hero flees soon after, but leaves something of theirs behind. (like a dagger or something idk) anyway that item eventually ends up in grovyle's possession.

dusknoir reveals that he's from the future and hero is too, pretty much the same as the game. the same plan is carried out as well, resulting in hero's capture, and grovyle and partner are dragged to the future in the end.

hero, grovyle, and partner all escape from the stockade (this time, hero tells grovyle to use dig, which surprises him and partner, since how would they know he knows that move? he decides that hero probably remembered it from the crystal lake fight)

after the stockade, hero tries to get grovyle and partner to come along with them, but they can't convince the two of them, especially partner, that they're trustworthy, and they just go ahead by themselves.

partner is especially freaked out here, bc well. they almost died back in the stockade, dusknoir just betrayed them, they're in the dark future without knowing how to get back, but also, seeing and talking with hero gives them this really strange and almost unsettling feeling, like something went horribly wrong somewhere.

the dark future section goes the same for a while, and eventually grovyle and partner rescue hero from spiritomb. hero explains the truth of the planets paralysis, but doesn't mention grovyle for some reason. in fact, when asked if hero knows grovyle, hero says no, but they look a little sad when they say it. (grovyle notices this, partner doesn't)

when the three of them go to celebi, hero tells grovyle and partner to stay behind while they talk to celebi (hero makes up some bad excuse like "celebi is a scary and dangerous pokemon and might attack you if she doesn't know you" although grovyle thinks that doesn't sound quite right)

grovyle and partner follow from a distance as hero and celebi make their way to the passage of time, but once they get there, everyone gets ambushed by the sableye. grovyle and partner are pushed out of hiding and celebi immediately recognizes grovyle. hero apologizes for all of the confusion and tries to challenge dusknoir, but then dialga appears. dusknoir reveals that hero and grovyle were partners and the whole amnesia thing. the whole group is kinda shocked that hero didn't mention it, despite knowing all of this. its then that hero reveals that they don't have much longer to live, their injury will take them out in a matter of hours at best. so they try to fight dusknoir anyway. but before they can do that, partner asks celebi to teleport them forward and hero, partner and grovyle all escape.

however, hero's injury combined with the passage of time causes something strange to happen, and instead of dying, they wake up as a pokémon. after the initial confusion, hero, grovyle and partner decide to regather the time gears.

partner's ominous feeling is only amplified by seeing hero as a pokémon, and they realize that it's a feeling of déja vu, even though they know they've never met any other pokémon of hero's species. hero and partner talk about it while watching the sunrise (or maybe sunset?) and hero says they had the same ominous feeling. the two of them wonder if they met in a past life.

Au where the hero doesn't have amnesia? How do you think that'd pan out? (Any game) I wanna hear your opinions c:

i think it would be the most interesting in explorers, the story would change drastically if hero remembered everything

i love the idea of hero joining the guild anyway since it's an info hub and they can travel around safely enough with a badge and all that

of course things would get a little complicated once the time gears start getting taken

hero knows who is doing it and why and doesn't like how everyone is painting the culprit as a bad pokemon, but they can understand why

hero has to then make the choice to come clean to partner, or just sneak out in order to meet up with grovyle and help him with the rest of the time gears

it can go a few ways from there

PMD EXPOTS Player Never Returns AU

Hi guys Elle again. Like I said in my previous post, I’ve been playing some PMD and am planning to quit the games after my player disappears. So this is how it’ll go if the player (in EXPOTS) disappears forever.

The AU:

Months have passed after Lilly, a female skitty, leaves Temporal Tower after Kayla, a female Pikachu, has disappeared. She went to the beach, and remembered that that was where she met the player, collapsed on shore. She experienced flashbacks and remembered all the great times they had together, which caused him to break down on the ground and cry, mourning for her valuable friend.

When Bidoof came she just breaks down into his arms. But unlike the actual story of the game, the player doesn't appear on the beach. This is where things become different.

Bidoof tries to comfort her.

"It will be alright, yup yup. Losses like these happen all the time in life and it will take time to get over them". Bidoof said

He helped cheer up Lilly, but it did not ease her sorrow and depression that much as she continued to miss her best friend more and more.

Just like in the actual game Lilly managed to graduate from the guild and find Luminous Spring and figure out she wasn't able to evolve, but this time alone. She had many sleepless nights in Sharpedo Bluff as she was thinking too much about things, or she would just cry herself to sleep. She felt like he couldn't get over her loss, no matter how hard she tried.

So one day she embarked on a journey, to search for her valuable, irreplaceable friend. She wanted to see if she was still around somewhere, or if she could find clues to try and bring her back. She searched far and wide to try and find some sort of clues, and one time she found herself in Treeshroud Forest on a stormy night. She was wondering through the forest alone, still searching, but she ran into Darkrai and got attacked.

Darkrai left the lonely skitty unconscious in the middle of the stormy woods. Eventually Lilly would find herself regain consciousness to find that the storm has cleared, and she sees a Pokémon she hasn't met before standing above her, and it was a shiny phanpy named Dumbo (And yes, like River from my previous AU post, he’s a male).

Dumbo helps Lilly and gives her an Oran berry to make her feel better. Lilly tells him her name, and vice versa. The two decide to go on an exploration by themselves in Treeshroud Forest and they see how beautiful it looks now that time has been restored. The two are growing a good bond quick and Lilly brings her new friend to Sharpedo Bluff.

Dumbo asks her if she's in an exploration team and Lilly tells him she's the leader of an exploration team which originated from Wigglytuff's Guild, and invites him to join.

Dumbo excitedly and gladly accepts, as they've come to trust each other. The two would become new partners, but even so, Lilly knew that she would never replace her dear friend from the future.

Lilly shows the guild members her new friend, Dumbo, and they're very welcoming to him. They're happy to see that Lilly has a new friend she trusts after her very sad loss. A lot of the same events unfold, like going to Blizzard Island, exploring Aegis Cave with Team Charm and finding Manaphy and taking care of him.

After a good few explorations, however, Dumbo asks Lilly if they can go to Luminous Spring and evolve. Lilly tells him that she tried evolving before but was unable to because of a distortion in the fabric of space. Dumbo asks Lilly why was that the case, and why she seemed depressed a lot. Lill explains to him her whole journey.

She tells him of her previous best friend she met on the beach, and tells him that her friend was the original leader of the team. She also tells him about Dusknoir and her other good friend Grovyle.

She tells him that they saved the world from the collapse of Temporal Tower, about Grovyle's sacrifice, and her best friend's disappearance. She ultimately breaks down into tears again and cries in Dumbo's arms.

Dumbo feels very sorry and sympathetic for everything Lilly has gone through. He tries his best to comfort Lilly, saying that life is hard and that these things happen, and we just have to try our best to get over them and stay strong.

He tells her how much he really loves her and has come to care for her, and that she can try her best to fill the void of her old friend. Lilly feels really flattered by his kind words and can't thank him enough, and she continues crying in his arms, but this time tears of joy.

She knows deep down that no one will be able to replace Kayla but she's willing to let her new partner to live up to her old friend.

A lot of the post ending story now continues as normal, except Lilly is the main character and she has her new partner, Dumbo, and with some other slight differences. Darkrai knows that Lilly's old friend, Kayla, has disappeared... But he knew that Lilly has a new friend that really trusts her, so he decided that she's a threat to his scheme as well.

Disguised as Cresselia, he entered their dreams and told them that they're causing a distortion in space that would ruin the world, and that they need to die for it to be saved. As normal, they find Drowzee so they can enter Azurill's nightmare, and find the fake Cresselia there.

And just like in the actual story, Palkia kidnaps them and brings them to Spacial Rift, they enter her dream and meet Darkrai and the actual Cresselia. Lilly recognized him as the Pokémon who attacked her at Treeshroud Forest, and showed signs of anger. Darkrai tells them to see him at Dark Crater.

Just like the actual story, the two set off to Dark Crater with Cresselia, while she uses up all their reviver seeds. The gang eventually reached the depths where they confront Darkrai. Things go slightly different here since Lilly's old friend is not present. Darkrai tells Lilly that he was the one who was behind the collapse of Temporal Tower, and that he was also behind her old friend's accident during time travel which caused her to turn from a human into a Pokémon.

Palkia appears and shatters the dimensional hole as Darkrai was escaping, which gives him amnesia, just like what happened to Lilly's old friend.

Lilly is now recognised as a true hero, even more so than in the actual game since her old friend isn't around. Dumbo also got recognised. As years pass, a statue of Lilly could even be seen in Treasure Town to honor her heroic efforts.

After this, the two would eventually evolve at Luminous Spring together, with Lilly evolving into Declatty and Dumbo evolving into Donphan, and go on many other explorations afterwards. At this stage Lilly has noticed how much of a bond she has formed with Lilly, and saw that she was worthy of the title of Dumbo.

She would never completely get over the loss of her old friend but knowing her new partner was around her, she felt happier than if she was alone.

It's pretty much a role reversal, Lilly use to be the partner and now she’s pretty much the main character.

Also I feel like a PMD AU has so many different possible variations and differences.  Just look at the three games and how different those were - like how the first game had a rescuing emphasis and the second one had more of an explorer emphasis.  Also a good chance to integrate Pokemon mythology like the first one did with Gardevoir.  Orrr, dare I say - a partnership with a human and a Pokemon? Kind of what the second game hinted at with Grovyle and the hero, pre-amnesia.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon AU?

YOU LIKE THIS SERIES TOO??!! YOU’RE MEETING ALL MY STANDARDS!! XD

For ITH I kinda thought of a similar concept to the first game with Sonny basically being a spirit sent to the barrio to ‘play a role’ like in the first game and with amnesia. I call it Spirit Sonny AU and yes it has the same ending as the first game. 

As for BMC, I have a few different ideas… (spoilers below for like…all the PMD games)

The first one is basically like one of those ‘Squip becomes human’ AUs but with a twist. Post-musical, Jeremy finds the Squip as a human, passed out on the ground. But he doesn’t recognize him and Squip doesn’t remember that he used to be a supercomputer. So Jeremy helps him and Squip forms a bond with him and the Squip Squad while they also try to figure out where Squip came from and who he is. You can imagine the angst that comes when Squip remembers what he did and when Jeremy realizes the truth :(

Another is based off PMD Time/Darkness/Sky with Jeremy as the Hero and Squip as Grovyle, with the two of them having come from the future to stop Planet Paralysis and Jeremy lost his memory and meets up with Michael and we have all the adventures and feels that come with it. I feel like other Squips could be the bad guys here, like Spam could be Dusknoir and Post could be Celebi or something like that :/

The other is based on Super Mystery Dungeon (I don’t care what anyone says, I love this game, even if it is hard as sin to beat) and Jeremy wakes up with no memory and runs into Squip (who’s Nuzleaf here) who takes him in and enrolls him in school, and I’m thinking the partner this time could be Christine because she has the same energy and talkative-ness and plus this means she’s secretly Mew and that’s INCREDIBLY fitting. (Jeremy can still meet Michael and become friends with him at school). But I think this one’s my favorite cause we got Squip being controlled and after Jeremy had started to like him and see him as a dad he betrays him and the ANGST that can come from that!! And then Squip has a change of heart and comes to help Jeremy and we get more feels and Dad!Squip and it’s just so freaking cute!

slight AU where the Hero stilled gained amnesia but remembers half of a song, only half. They hum it from time to time until it becomes routine to help partner get to sleep or to calm them, Grovyle picks up on who the Hero is as they use it to calm partner upon arriving in the dark world. He knows it's them because he made the song for them as his partner to get them to sleep in the silence.

On the amnesia role swap au, it’s also funny when you consider how over leveled grovyle is compared to hero and partner when you meet him, so it’d be like

The most intimidating exploration team tbh lol. Honestly I bet partner wouldn’t have to worry about team skull at all in this au because grovyle would just easily one-hit K.O them every single time

aus where hero and grovyle get roleswapped and he has amnesia while hero steals timegears are kinda funny to me just because i think about the chapter where dusknoir shows up and how it would take all his willpower to stay in character and not just explode on the spot once entering the guild because
