Housed Hearts Ch2 Apartment Troubles
(This will heavily reference House Hunted 2 by Mortisfox and maybe House Hunted also by Mortisfox. Only the OC is mine.)
Tumblr media
-THESE FIRST FEW CHAPTERS TAKE PLACE TWO YEARS BEFORE ROSE MEETS MAISON-
A coughing filled the air as the greyhorse bus pulled away from the station with a growl from its engine blowing up smoke as it drove off.  It continued down the street before turning around a corner. Leaving the smell of smoke and oil in the air.
"Ugh. This is why I don't like the old models." She shook her head and waved a hand in front of her face to help disperse the foul smell from her nose. "Right then. I should be close to my house. But first thing's first. I'm starving."
Normal Business District. The place where she was going to be staying while on the waiting list for the housing department to find an actual house for her. Admittedly not the most ideal situation but she was sure she was going to be patient. She understood it took a while and she was sure her temporary apartment was going to be fine. However for now she was hungry so she was going to look for a restaurant before heading over to her temporary new home. Couldn't walk around on an empty stomach and she knew the address anyways so finding it later shouldn't be a problem. Grabbing her suitcase in one hand, she began walking away from the bus station and into the town ahead of her.
It was your typical busy small town with your typical wife variety of stores and various other businesses. 'Normal Business District' as it was called due to just how many companies were established here and how so many stores were opening up shop here constantly. Although she knew some of them were definitely far from 'normal'. It was just a matter of keeping your eyes open...Or in her case one eye. On the surface any normal person wouldn't think twice when looking at all these things. A local clothing store. A bar. There was a few convience stores. Maybe a grocery store here and there. Throngs of people walked around her not even batting an eye at her. Cars of all kinds honked and drove up and down streets. Your typical thriving town area. It was something that was a blessing compared to the tense aura that she used to be in. With a deep inhale she was able to sniff out her target nearby. The smell of hard brewed coffee and various food smells wafted towards her from the air. Ah! A restaurant of some kind was nearby. Perfect timing. She was starving. Smiling and increasing her strides she quickened her pace and headed towards the source of the smells.
She was eventually able to locate the cafe when she turned a corner and there it was across the street. It was small and quant and the smell of coffee wafted out strongly every time someone opened it's door either to go in or out of the cafe. From the large glass windows she could already see a few people inside eating the delicious food. Perfect. Smiling she made her way across the street. She had just made it across the street and a few yards from the cafe's doors when a sentence caught her ear.
"And you're sure this person WAS from the housing department and not just someone who called themselves a realtor or real estate agent?"
She stopped in her tracks pausing at the sentence before turning her head to the right and finding a sight. A petite woman was standing just a few feet away from her talking to a man. Long dark brown hair was thrown over her shoulder in a braid and brown eyes focused in concentration as she scribbled something down on a clipboard she carried. A red sweater and black skirt was her outfit. After she finished writing down whatever it was she was writing, she looked back to the man, seemed to thank him, and then looked around her. Her eyes locked with hers as she still stared and with a smile the strange woman approached.
"Good afternoon!," she greeted her as she stood in front of her close enough to hear with a smile. "You look new around here. May I have a moment of your time?"
She blinked but smiled politely back. "Sure. I'm in no hurry."
"Oh thank you. I promise I won't hold you for too long. My name is Ivy Woodrow," she introduced herself, "I'm the assistant to the mayor of the valley and I'm just doing my monthly census. I have to keep very close track of those coming in and the state of everyone's living experience. So you're a new resident I'm assuming?"
"Yes and no. I've lived here my whole life however it's my first time in Normal Business District. I'm just staying here temporarily until my new house is set up."
"I see." At this Ms. Woodrow hummed and scribbled something else on her clipboard looking between her and it. "I think I remember you. That would make you Ms. Rose Willow correct?" Rose happily nodded. "Ah. We're so happy to have you then. It really is a nice place to live if you know where you're going." She then hummed again and rose a brow. "I do have to ask about this 'house' you mentioned. "It was assigned to you by the Uncanny Valley Apartment Hunters right? And not by a REALTOR?"
"No. Well at least not yet. I paid for a house but it's going to take awhile so I've been told. Until then I'm renting an apartment here," Rose explained before smiling. "Don't worry. I'm not about to fall for those guys tricks."
"Ah. Perfect. Then you're already aware of the dangers."
"REALTORS might be tricky but I don't consider them dangerous unless I fall for their tricks, which I won't. Trust me. I've been living here long enough to know that."
"Ah. Good to know. And about REALTORS. I can't seem to find one of them for my census so just...stay alert," she warned, "I'm pretty sure they've reached their monthly attoinment but we've had some mishaps."
Rose sighed. "As you do with REALTORS. I'll be fine but thanks for the heads up."
Ivy smiled and nodded. "Hope you have a wonderful day. If you need anything stop by the Mayor's office."
She didn't say anything as Ms. Woodrow left and went onto talking to a different person. Rose shook her head before continuing on into the cafe to quench her growling stomach. She was quick to get in line and grab herself a tea and some doughnuts and scurry for the back of the cafe. A wooden seat met her but it felt entirely like memory foam hugging her body. That might've been strange to someone but normal to her. The red tea hopped between smells of florals, fruit, and caramel corn. The liquid tasted spicy then sweet then buttery. Nothing out of the ordinary for valley tea. The ham and cheese sandwich she grabbed just tasted like a plain sandwich. But the cake which looked to have purple dyed sugar with an edible gold symbol on top exploded spicily in her mouth before it deepened into a rich chocolate. Yep. Typical Valley food. She sighed in content just enjoying herself and looking out the window. Just watching the people go by. It was peaceful today. Not a worry in the world as she leasurely ate at her own pace. However she didn't notice the figure approaching her table until he made himself known.
"Hello pal!"
Rose jumped and whirled around blinking her eye and paused at who she saw. And older stocky man stood there perhaps a foot shorter than herself and smiled at her. He wore a plaid yellow coat, greyish undershirt, brown pants, red bowtie, and had a house pin pinned to his coat. He smiled at her with a tooth missing, a small mustache, and a grey haired comb over. And a very obvious cord like appendage sticking out from his neck.
She recognized what he was in an instant.
He cleared his throat before talking to her. "*ahem* I..." He smiled but paused with a blink. "Uh...Hang on." She watched as he reached into a pants pocket only to pull out a small piece of paper, looked over it, and then stuffed it back into said pocket with a smile right back to her. "Right. Right. *ahem* My name is Heim Baile. REALTOR. And I would LOVE to sell you a house today!"
Calmly she slowly smiled at him and his familiar speech. Ah. A REALTOR. She's definitely seen plenty of them around but none quite like this one. His movements were awkward and sluggish and he seemed to be perspiring a lot. Also how ironic was it that she'd run into one of them after just speaking about them around fifteen minutes ago.
"Um..Yes. so I would love to show you to your future home."
She chuckled before raising a brow. "A house that I haven't even looked at yet?"
He suddenly stiffened puffing his cheeks out for a moment. "Oh. Did I mess it up again? Forgive me. I'm a bit rusty with the whole REALTOR schtick. I would love to SELL you a house!" He corrected himself quickly making her chuckle despite herself. "This is the part where I give you my card. One moment!" She smiled watching as he quickly patted himself down going through pockets until he eventually pulled out a card. "Aha! Got it!"
He held it out to her and she took it from him out of curiosity to peer at it. On it was written 'Heim Baile #463 REALTOR' along with a phone number. And was that a smiley face and heart sticker on it? A few coffee stains creased the sides. Her smile widened despite herself. This was a REALTOR's card?
"Please gimme a call soon. I really need this."
"Hmhm. I'll think about it."
With a gleeful smile on his face, the man turned and quickly shuffled his way out of the cafe. She chuckled as he accidentally knocked over a few things gaining a few angry shouts and frowns from other people. She chuckled as he eventually waddled out the door and disappeared from sight. My my. Quite a fellow. Rose sat there for a moment before shaking her head and pocketing the card. Wasn't going to fall for any of his tricks but it was always amusing to see them try. Oh well. Such was life here.
The rest of her meal was peaceful and soon after she grabbed her luggage and left again. Walking back into the busy streets and walking towards the address she remembered so well. It should be just a little bit aways from here. And it indeed did not take long to find. An apartment complex just sitting there ready to live in. Now they said she'd be temporary set up in apartment one on the first floor until a house with her specific wants was found for her. It was easy to find the apartment and easier to just reach for the handle and just turn it...Only for it to not turn? Rose blinked. Before trying again a few times. Each time it was obviously locked with a click.
Eventually she hummed. "Well this isn't good."
The company said the apartment would be totally unlocked and the key left in the kitchen. She tried the door a few more times to no avail before giving up. She stared at the door for a few more seconds before reaching into her pocket and pulled out her phone. Dialing a number she put the phone to her ear and waited as it rung a few times. After a moment someone eventually picked up.
"Hello. Uncanny Valley Apartment Hunters. How many I help you?",a voice asked through the phone.
"Yes. I'm locked out of my rental apartment. Can I ask why?"
"Yes. We know who you are, Ms. Willow. We were going to call you but-" The person on the other end was suddenly cut off by a loud woman's shriek. It was so loud Rose had to pull her head away. The scream was followed out by...game show music? "Sorry. We were going to call you but we're having some difficulties at the office. We're working on getting the Mayor's assistant over here to solve it. Until then we're afraid your apartment had some slight-" the person was again cut off by some loud laughter and a massive sound of a chainsaw whirring about. Rose just...stared at the phone in shocked silence. "UGH! Listen. I'm sorry but your apartment won't be ready for- Oh! Ivy, you made it! Be right back, Ms. Willow."
Rose continued to stare at the phone. Well...that certainly wasn't something she was expecting but again things were never normal around the valley. The sounds of papers shuffling about and distant arguing was heard but it was hard to hear over the game show music still going on. Although she thought she Heard the words misunderstanding and host. Eventually the voice spoke again.
"Your apartment might not be ready until tomorrow. Our deepest apologies. This usually doesn't happen but there seems to be a mix up. We'll reimburse you for a hotel stay for the night. Go see the sights or something. There's still a chance we'll have this fixed in a few hours. Just... don't go through any strange doors for a while."
"Oh... Alright then."
The phone was hung up and Rose continued to stare at the door for a long moment... before sighing. Well crap. This wasn't good. And she was looking forward to just getting some sleep early. Oh well. She might as well go and get a hotel room for the day then if it won't be ready until tomorrow. Honestly these sudden annoyances were always the worst. She thought she saw a hotel in town as she walked to get here. Might as well go there..but she was calling a taxi. No way she was walking back all the way there with the distance. With nothing left to do, Rose just rolled her luggage out and again looked at her. Now what was that taxi company's number again? She walked out phone in hand just about to dial in the number-
"Heya pal!" Rose jumped at the sound of someone suddenly behind her and looked up...only to blink at the REALTOR from before. A few green leaves clinging to his body. "I had a feeling you were gonna call me. I could feel it in my bones."
Her eye blinked at him for a moment before her brow rose. "Actually I was about to call a taxi. You were just in those bushes weren't you?"
Again he seemed to stiffen nervously. "N-No?....AAAAAAAnyways. What say me and you go look at that house now?" He said changing the subject making her again slowly become amused. "He's just dying to meet ya!"
He was trying really hard wasn't he? It was amusing and almost cute in a way. He looked awkward but no where near threatening. She could tell. ...Ah what the heck. It wouldn't hurt to humor him a bit. She can always call a taxi when she was done being amused.
"Alright. I'll look at the house, but I'm not promising anything,"
He looked surprised for a moment but gladly lit up. "Hey. Don't worry about it! Just gettin' you inside the house is more than enough for.." He paused for a moment humming. "What do they call it? Commission? Yeah. Something like that."
She only chuckled. "Alright. Lead the way. "
He happily turned on his heels and gestured to her to follow as he started to slowly waddle off down the street. "Do you like television shows? There's this one game show program that I always enjoy watching. There's always something different on there every time!"
Game show? Huh. Kinda ironic that she heard a game show music over the phone. "Not much into game shows but I do like watch plant documentaries and gardening videos on the net. I adore gardening. Although crime shows are good too. It's fun to try and guess who did it and what happens next."
"Never really thought of it like that. You like fast food? The burger prince around the corner is always a great place to grab some grub!"
"I usually don't eat greasy foods too much but yeah. They make good burgers. I prefer the valley's teas and cakes myself. It's like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get."
"Mmm. Chocolate."
He continued to walk awkwardly down the street then going across one street and down another street before he rounded a corner. She followed him all the way. This wasn't too far from her apartment anyways so she could just walk back. It was a more suburban area of the Normal Business District and there was your standard houses in between one or two more grocery stores. Eventually he stopped and turned to her with a smile.
"Here we are, pal!"
Rose turned her eye towards across the street he faced and rose a brow. "You're selling an empty lot?''
"Ah! Nah. I mean the one behind me."
She  turned back behind him. And then paused at what she saw. It was a house yes but it was an absolute DISASTER of one. The house looked old and had so many cracks in their walls, and the roof looking like it would collapse any second being slumped over like that. The windows were covered in dirt on the outside and the lawn barely had any grass. Only in dead patches here in there around the yard as it was littered with trash. Mostly empty fast food containers. She continued to stare at the dismayed house for a long moment.
"....THIS is the house?!," she asked in shock. She didn't mean for it to come off so rude but it just slipped out.
"Hey now, pal. It's a little rough around the edges sure. But with some tender love and care this house can become a home in no time!,'' he tried to assure her but seemed a bit nervous. "Or whatever. You just gotta see the insides. I promise you won't be disappointed."
She continued to stare at the poor sight. This was the REALTOR's main body?! Why did it look so poorly maintained? Even the least threatening REALTOR would have a decent looking main body. What on earth happened to him?
She slowly nodded. "Ok. Show me the inside."
Heim paused for a moment looking surprised. "Really?! Hot dog!!"
She couldn't help herself when he suddenly gave what looked like a happy Hop but only lifted himself about an inch off the ground. She giggled at him. For a REALTOR he sure acted rather cuter than most others she's seen. She watched Heim quickly walk to the door and open the door, politely gesturing for her to come in. She walked over until she stood just inside the doorway to look in. She wasn't naive enough to walk inside a strange REALTOR's main body. That's how people got eaten. She did peer her head in...and found the inside as bad as the outside. His illusions weren't very good at disguising his inner body. Isolation perked out everywhere from the walls and ceiling and the floors looked so scuffed and worn out. Graffiti looked to be scribbled across the walls and a torn looking sofa. The illusions weren't good at all. The only decent thing inside the place was the Giant TV that wasn't a part of the illusions.
"Well...What do ya think, pal? Not too bad right?"
Rose didn't say anything at first just looking around cringing on the inside. "Well... It's..not that bad. Not the worst thing I've ever seen."
He again stiffened for a moment in surprise before a bashful smile appeared on his face. "Wow. Ah geez. No one's ever said something that nice to me. I..Uh..Dunno what to say."
"I'd ask what you've been fed recently." Her eye looked around at everything before looking back at him. "You're either not being fed enough or the food you are eating isn't nutritious enough. It's not the worst I've seen but definitely a bit of off your mark there." She smiled at him. "Have you tried talking to the mayor about it?"
He continued to stare at her before he suddenly looked nervous. "Er...Is it that obvious?"
"Pretty much. I knew from the moment I saw you. It also helps that your lure cord is pretty visible. But I will say, I'm glad to meet a REALTOR that's different from the others I've seen." She giggled again smiling at him. "And one that can make me smile."
He again seemed to be flustered by her words. "Oh. Wowza. I uh.. Wasn't expecting that. Or such nice words. ... Please forgive me for being a bit forward but...Well gotta shoot my shot right?" Rose blinked as all of a sudden she found her hand being lifted and held by the REALTOR and...was his lure blushing. "Would you give this down-on-his-luck house a chance and let me take you on a date? I don't gotta lot of money but I'll treat you right."
Rose stared at him in shock for a long moment before she burst into a flurry of giggles and couldn't help but smile. "Oh my. Well aren't you forward."
He chuckled nervously. "What can I say? G-Gotta try my shot."
"Can't ever say I've ever been asked out that forward before especially by a REALTOR." His hands felt sweaty and plant like. Like wet leaves after rain. "But perhaps we should take things slow. We only just met and you don't even know my name."
Heim blinked before smiling nervously. "Uh. Yeah. Guess you're right. Haha. W-What is your name?"
She smiled at him. "My name is Rose. Rose Willow. It's nice to meet you Mr. Baile. You're quite possibly the nicest REALTOR I've ever met. But I hope you don't mind if I don't come inside. Y'know how it is."
"Oh. Actually I filled up on fast food earlier today. I'm also not very particularly fond of human. Give me a giant greasy burger any day right?"
"Can't say I disagree with that but then why were you following me around?"
"Hey. What's the point of being a REALTOR if I don't try getting out there every so often?"
She hummed. "Fair enough." A sudden ring through the air making both pause and Rose blinked. Her phone was ringing. "Oh. ..That might be the housing company. Excuse me. I should take that." She gently pulled her hand away before getting her phone from a pocket and holding it up to her ear. "Hello?"
"Hello. Ms. Willow?"
"Speaking."
"Great news! We were able to get everything in order with the help of Ms. Woodrow the Mayor's assistant." Oh. So it was the apartment company. "Your apartment is all ready for you now. We are sorry for the inconvenience. We can have a car pick you up from wherever you are to bring you back."
"No need. I'm only three streets away. I'll walk back but thanks for the heads up."
"If you insist. Thank you for going through the Uncanny Valley Apartment Hunters. Operating  REALTOR free since nineteen eighty seven."
She smiled hanging up before looking back at Heim. "That was the housing department. My apartment is ready. I'd better go and check to make sure the movers didn't damage anything of mine. Sorry to cut our meeting short."
"Oh." He looked a little disappointed at that. "So soon?"
"You know where Im living for now. My apartment is the first one on the first floor. You can come visit me again if you want to, or you can stop by the green house in town. I work there. It'd be nice to make a new friend."
"R-Really?! Oh. You're being awfully nice to me. No one's ever wanted to be friends before."
"Just because you're a REALTOR that doesn't mean I can't show you decency." She patted his shoulder making him smile. "Feel free to stop by sometime and see me. I can always use the company."
He nodded. "I will! I'd love to see you again."
"Then I look forward to seeing you again."
With a small turn and wave Rose began walking away from Him and towards the apartment again. Certainly an unusual day. But for now she'd prefer the comforts of her own bed.

I just finished reading the Stargazer series by Michael Jan Friedman
and I am just in love with this crew.
First, we have Baby Picard. He's 28, has hair, likes to run fast, and is just like old Picard except brash and a little dumb from inexperience.
Then we have Gilaad Ben Zoma, first officer. This dude is just a puppy man. But a smart puppy, like a Border Collie. He's best buds with Baby Picard and tries to make everyone happy.
Vigo. Weapons officer. This guy is apparently 7 feet of strapping muscle and is solid blue and hairless (a Pandrilite). He's endlessly cheerful and uses his immense physical stature to be obsessed with a board game that he tries to trick people into playing with him.
Phigus Simenon, chief engineer. He's a Gnalish. Imagine a lizard, but not like a Cardassian lizard, just a lizard lizard, then make him walk on two legs, be exceptionally intelligent, and be very grouchy (like an angry Geico gecko). That's this dude. Amazing.
Gerda and Idun Asmund, comm officers. So you know how Worf was a Klingon raised by humans? Well these identical blond twin sisters are humans raised by Klingons and they absolutely will kill you. Imagine the twins from the Shining but make them adults and gleefully violent.
Carter Greyhorse. CMO. Giant Native American. Literally just Ferdinand the bull, wanting to sit under trees and sniff flowers, but he's absolutely in love with Gerda Asmund and she only finds joy in violence so he makes compromises. True love.
Peter "Pug" Joseph, chief of security. Imagine Samwise Gamgee in a Starfleet uniform. That's it.
And there's a whole slew of great characters on the lower decks, too.
And these kids go on all sorts of great adventures. There's literally a whole storyline about the lizard engineer needing to compete in a lizard race to win the rights to fertilize some lizard eggs on his planet so Picard secretly gets the boys together to help him out. Incredible.
And we see Picard meet Guinan for the first time and the first thing she says to him is "you have hair".
I just loved these books so much and wish there were several hundred more since we know these people served on this ship for freaking 22 years.
If you like Star Trek and you like books, read these.

Housed Hearts Ch3 Job Opportunities

-THIS SPANS OVER A COURSE OF A FEW WEEKS OR MONTHS-
The apartment she temporarily was moved in was quite nice even if most of her belongings were still going to be in boxes stacked around everywhere until she was located and given a house. She had all the basics she needed anyways. It was only a matter of time until she would be given a full house anyways. The very next day she was back to work as usual taking one of the many greyhorse buses until she got to that greenhouse in town. It was always so calming being around so many plants and taking care of something. They were her babies in a way. She was always watering them, giving them the highest quality fertilizer and plant food money could buy, and trimming away any dead leaves or stems. Only the best for her babies and her customers. She was often complimented on how healthy her plants were or how pretty the flowers were or how delicious the various fruits and vegetables that she had grown was there. It was hard work but hearing that people were happy with her work was reassuring to hear. She hadn't seen or heard anything from any REALTORS for almost two weeks since meeting Heim a while ago but she wasn't surprised too much about it. REALTORS were going to do what they please despite her offers. However she had a small surprise waiting for her when she arrived home and found a certain lure huffing and puffing down the street and towards the apartment complex and towards herself.
"Well if it isn't Mr. Baile. How nice to see you again," Rose greeted amused and crossing her arms, "Are you on the hunt for more buyers today?"
He stopped right in front of her wheezing a bit and taking a moment to catch his breath so to speak before smiling at her. "Nah. I'm on my way to that burger place near here. I got a few coupons off for 'em from some newspapers."
"I see." Her brow rose at him. "I wasn't aware REALTORS had money. Or are you awarded a lump sum along with your feedings?"
Heim paused for a moment before looking off. "Ah..I uh... Didn't think of that. Guess I'm kinda stuck. I..Guess I don't need it anyways." His arms flopped down deflated. "! did already got my delivery this month anyways."
She chuckled despite herself and he blinked as she patted his shoulder. "Well I probably shouldn't do this, but If you really want one I can lend you a hand."
He immediately perked up. "You mean that?!"
She nodded. "I wasn't feeling up to cooking dinner tonight anyways." She jabbed a thumb over her shoulder. "C'mon. You can pay me back by letting me use your coupons."
"DEAL! Wow. Not only are you pretty, but you're S-So nice to an old run down house like me too."
"Hey. You're not run down." Rose assured him with a smile and pat on his shoulder. "You're a really nice person and it's what's on the inside that matters."
He hummed. "Well I do have a nice TV so not every house can claim that!"
She giggled again. "I was talking about how nice you are again but it is a nice TV." Heim puffed his chest in pride as he waddled next to her. He certainly was a sweet guy. Can't say that about a lot of REALTORS. "We can bring them back to my place and watch some TV if you'd like."
"Really?!"
"Sure. It'd be nice to have company."
She had a quiet evening and spent it with Heim watching TV. A few nature documentaries and a few generic drama shows here and there. It was new to have a REALTOR sit on her sofa for a few hours watching TV before leaving with his burgers to no doubt be digested by his main body. He surely was a sweet little guy. Perhaps all REALTORS could learn a lesson or two from him. She again didn't see Heim for about another week until he showed up again walking past her apartment building and it was her day off. She was just taking a potted plant outside to plant in the apartments lot when she spotted him waddling his lure down the sidewalk.
"Hello, Heim. Going to the burger place again today?"
He seemed happy to see her but shook his head no. "Actually there's a new ice cream place that sells burgers AND ice cream! Can you believe it? I heard they're giving away free food all day for their grand opening! I can't miss that!"
"Didn't you get your monthly dose of feeding this month already?"
"Well..yes. But I can't miss a good deal like this!"
Her brows rose higher as she looked at him. "You're still eating fast foods huh? Have you tried the salads and fruits the convience stores have? I think those are pretty good too."
"Yeah. Sure. I've had them a couple times but if there's somewhere that's giving away free burgers then I'm game!" He smiled wider gesturing at her to come along. "You wanna come?"
She shook her head before holding up the small potted plant. "Nah. I'm doing some winding down today and planting a few things."
He shrugged. "Suit yourself. Feel free to come join me later!"
"I'll think about it."
He nodded before walking away and she watched as he went off on whatever trip he had planned. He sure ate a lot of fast food huh? That can't be too healthy for him even if he wasn't human. Was that why he was in such bad shape? It didn't seem the ones who were feeding him didn't care or were even aware of that fact. He didn't even seem to mind that actually himself despite his initial nervousness when she first saw his main body. Things could only get worse if nothing was done about it.
.... Tomorrow morning she would be sure to bring everything she needed for the first step.
She was expecting Heim's surprise when she first got there. At first he didn't even respond to her showing up. Rose assumed he must've been asleep considering his lure cord wasn't leading anywhere outside. So she wasted no time stretching on the thick rubber gloves, opening the giant trash bag she brought along with her, and started walking around the yard picking up the many pieces of trash (again mostly empty take out containers) and throwing them inside the bag. The first step was to clean up the top mess, then she'd come back the next day with a company truck and haul what she really needed for this job.
Heim wasn't there the first time she showed up but his lure answered the door and stared in surprise at her when a company truck she borrowed and rolled up to his house. He stared in surprised silence as Rose just went about her business opening the back of the truck and hauling out a tiller she had also uh... borrowed from her boss's company for this task. He continued to watch as she rolled it up onto his front lawn and then turned around to walk back into the truck only for this time to struggle with a heavy bag of fertilizer.
"Uh...Rose?"
"Hello Heim," she grunted out between trying to haul the bag out.
"Um... Hey, pal. Whatcha doing there?" He pointed towards the truck and everything else.
"Fertilizer. I'm gonna till it into the dirt," she grunted finally dropping the massive bag by the tiller with a sigh. "Then I'll add a layer of top soli. I'll need to borrow a seed spreader and some grass seed from work later this week and we can get your situation better."
His eyes widened if that was even possible for his lure to do before looking around his yard. "You mean... You're gonna fix my yard?! For free!?"
"You'd better believe it. Now stand back. I wouldn't want to get your lure caught in the tiller." With one hand on the tiller and the other on the starting cord, Rose yanked it hard. And the engine roared to life.
The hard parts was tilling the fertilizer into the ground and then shoveling all the top soil everywhere. Good thing her bosses also ran a landscaping gig. She'd make up an excuse for why a bunch of fertilizer and top soil is gone later. Probably pretend she used it in some of the pots at work. Overall the hard parts were done and she could rest for a bit. Later that week she returned once again with the company truck and a few bags of grass seed and a seed spreader to start spreading the seeds all over the lawn before watering it all down with a nearby hose. It should take about a month to fully grow in. Hopefully she wouldn't have to overseed any spots. For now she could move on to the second thing he wanted to do. So imagine Heim's surprise when one day there was a knock on his door. Strange. He didn't order any takeout and he wasn't expecting anyone to deliver anything from the Mayor's office until his monthly feeding next month but he puppeteered his lure anyways to answer anyways. So imagine his surprise when he opened the door and found Rose standing there, but there was something else. In her hands was a giant basket of...fruits and vegetables??
"Uh...Heya, pal!" He smiled anyways upon seeing her albeit confused. "Sure is nice to see you again but what's up with the basket of goodies you're holding there?"
"This, Heim, is the new addition to your diet." Before he could ask anything she was already placing the giant basket into his arms as he blinked. "You need more nutritious foods and better carbs if you're going to repair the outer shell of your main body. Greasy fast foods like burgers and ice cream and anything else you're eating might keep you full, but it's not healthy. From now on You're going to be eating these fruits and vegetables and I want you to start repairing your outer shell. Once that's done your illusions should get better too." She smiled at him wider. "You'll be better soon. I'm going to be seeing you a lot more to make sure it happens too. Bet on it."
Rose kept her promise. Slowly but surely she began coming back more often than not when she could to deliver what actual healthy foods she could or anything extra her boss was about to throw out anyways. It was always still good enough for Heim to eat. Over the course of the next two months she made sure that his lawn was kept up as it slowly grew in an eventual bright green color and a few of the smaller cracks in Heim's walls had already healed. Heim himself was mostly flabbergasted about it all but also very grateful and even happy to see her a whole lot more.
"Hey! Y'know You're more than welcome to come inside," he said to her early one morning she showed up with a giant paper bag of apples from a sale down the street. "You've been so nice to me... It's the least I could do for ya."
Of course she had her concerns. "Are you sure? I wouldn't want to cause any inconvenience for you... Or let something else happen by accident. Aren't you still waiting on your feeding for this month from the Mayor's office?"
Of course he winced from her implying to be eaten alive but it was a valid concern considering most REALTORS wouldn't hesitate. "Well..Yeah. But I'm not really hungry right now." He gestured to her bag as if to get his point across. "You've been feeding me a lot more than I'm actually used to so I've been a lot more full lately. Honestly I -I wouldn't mind getting able to spend some time with you that's not you just taking care of me."
She hummed raising a brow at him. His words were genuine and he was really sweet...but she wasn't going to take a chance without ensuring her safety first. "Alright then. I have nothing else to do today anyway." He lit up but blinked as she held the bag to him. "But I want you to eat these first. I don't want to be in there while you digest them. No offense." And it'll help with any lingering hunger he might be feeling.
"... Kay. Fair enough, pal."
Actually being a REALTOR sure was... different. Can't say she'd ever done something like this before. She'd waited around forty five minutes for Heim to finish digesting and fully ensuring his insides weren't in the digesting process anymore before he (or more accurately his lure) answered the door again and happily beckened her inside. Rose hesitated at first. Heim wasn't a danger, not really. But when a REALTOR was hungry...Well she might've become food on accident if anything else. So she only stuck in her head at first. His illusions were gone allowing her to see the real meaty, fleshy insides. And across from her was Heim's lure resting on an armchair of the meaty flesh, eyes blackened.
"Are you gonna come in?", his voice asked slightly worried from everywhere around the room now that his lure wasn't in use anymore.
"Are you sure it won't be uncomfortable for you?" She asked concerned raising a brow. "I'll literally be walking around on what's probably you're stomach."
"Nah. It's not like I haven't felt it before walking this around all the time. It's a pain in my gutters chasing around people sometimes lemme tell ya."
"Alright. If you're sure."
She hesitated a few seconds but slowly stepped inside the doorway before pausing...and then slowly walking inside. Well this was certainly a new experience wasn't it? Other than poking her head in a few times she's never been inside another living creature before. The fleshy recliner Heim's lure sat on extended into the flesh sofa making it big enough for her to sit on. Slowly she walked over ... and slowly sat down. It was.. surprisingly comfy and soft albeit warm and squishy. The sounds of a nearby game show popped up on the TV and it soon had her attention gravitated towards it. Although she was aware in the back of her mind.  But.. nothing happened. Other than Heim shouting excitedly at the screen every time the host asked a question to one of the contestants. It was cute to hear him so excited. Until around two hours later the door knocked causing Rose to immediately look towards it in question.
"Are you expecting someone?"
"Not really," his voice answered from everywhere. "Unless it's a door to door salesmen. I hate those guys."
Rose continued to stare as the knocking came again before she stood up. "I'll see who it is. You just watch your show."
"Can't complain about that!"
She chuckled but walked over to the door and grabbed the doorknob and turned it. She opened it and paused. A pair of brown eyes on the other side also froze upon seeing her standing there. Both women just stood there for a long, long moment staring at one another. Eventually the other woman shook her head blinking at her.
"Excuse me for asking this...But have we met before?"
"I'm pretty sure we have." Rose rose a brow at her and the clipboard in her hands. "Ms. Woodrow if I remember right." She then looked at a stack of at least three boxes stacked on top of each other than almost reached Ivy's mid forearm. And a delivery truck was parked not too far from Heim's lawn. "I wasn't expecting you to show up here."
"I'm making sure a few of our known REALTORS get their monthly attoinment this month." This time it was her turn to look her up and down confused. "But you're not a REALTOR. Do I have the wrong address?"
"Did someone say food?"
Rose turned her head back inside and nodded. "Yeah. She says she's here to give you that monthly feeding you've been waiting for." She pushed the door all the way open to allow Ivy full access to the inside of the home. By now Heim's lure had popped his eyes back to normal to look at them both.
"Really?! Neato! I've been waiting for that forever."
"What exactly are you doing inside a REALTOR'S home?" Rose turned back to a confused and astonished Ivy. Her eyes looked between her and Heim. "I don't suppose I walked in on something bad happening."
"Actually we were just watching TV."
"TV?!" Ivy looked more perplexed at Roses casual answer.
Rose nodded again. "But I suppose it is time for me to go."
"So soon?" Heim looked saddened but Rose nodded.
"You have some more digesting to do and I don't think I should be inside while you do that but I'll tell you what. I don't have work next Friday. We can hang out then. Sound good?" He happily nodded. "Then I'll see you then." Rose then turned to Ms. Ivy. "You should make sure whatever you're feeding him is healthier than what he's been getting. He needs to start healing his outer shell more. Excuse me."
Ivy's eyes followed Rose as she stepped around her and walked away down the driveway and back into the street and down the road. She watched Rose go for a long moment before looking over at the REALTOR in a long, long moment of silence.
"Hey. What can you tell me about your relationship with her?"
More days passed since that day. She still did what she always did. Going about her day to day life until there was a knock at her apartment door early one morning. Confused she opened the door and on the other side was none other than Ms. Ivy. Rose blinked at her but before she could say anything Ivy spoke.
"Ms. Rose Willow I assume. Do you have a moment? I think we should talk."
Rose rose a brow at her. "I'm sorry but I'll be late for work."
"I've already informed your employers about that," Ivy interrupted by holding up a hand. "Please. This is really important."
Rose stared at her for a long moment before crossing her arms and leaning against her door frame. "Alright. You got my attention."
Ivy smiled at her. "Thank you. It won't take too long I promise. I just wanted to talk to you about what happened last week."
"Was there something wrong with me visiting Heim?"
"No, no. Not at all. I was actually quite intrigued by it all. He told me everything you've been doing with him." Rose rose her brow higher suspicious. "You know usually it's not advised to feed REALTORS then again there's not a lot of people who willingly associate with them."
"Am I being arrested for giving him fruit?"
She shook her head smiling wider. "Quite the opposite actually. I'm impressed with the level of kindness and humanity you've shown towards Heim Baile. So I came by to stop and ask you a question. What is your opinion on REALTORS and other non-human species as a whole?"
Rose was surprised by the question but answered. "I think they're alright. Obviously you should be careful around a lot of them but that doesn't mean I'm going to treat them like a pack of cockroaches. I find a lot of them pretty nice actually. Heim sure is."
That made Ivy light up more. "I'm glad you think that because I'd like to offer you a job opportunity."
That was certainly a surprise. "A job?"
"It would only be once a month and you'd still be able to work your regular day job," she assured Rose, "I think you'd be a great addition for the Mayor's REALTOR feeding program."
"Oh. The feeding program huh?"
"I'd be your employer for it of course as the Mayor is usually busy with more important matters. But it has good benefits. You'll be paid a hundred dollars for every one REALTOR you feed. We'll start you on just feeding one REALTOR per month and then slowly add more but it'll be an amount you can surely handle. What do you say? I think with your way of thinking you'd be great at the job."
Rose still stood there for a solid moment before humming. "That's...a tempting offer but I don't know."
"You don't have to answer now. Here." A small card was held up to her. "Here's the number for the Mayor's office. Call me if you change your mind." She slowly took the card and looked at it. "If you change your mind, there'll be a certain amount of food given to you to distribute to certain REALTORS. More will be explained if or when you decide."
"...Ok. I'll think about it but no promises."
There was a few days of rethinking it over. In that time life passed on as normal or as normal as it did around here. She had thought about it for a while... before calling the number. Why not? It sounded like a great deal and it wouldn't hurt to make an extra hundred dollars a month. So she dialed the number and arranged for it to be done. It wasn't so bad meeting with Ivy again and having her explain the basics. Once a month a supply of food would be delivered to her apartment and it was her job to deliver it all to Heim and then mail the Mayor's office a filled form with Heim's signature confirming he had gotten it. The check for a hundred dollars would be mailed to her a week after. Seemed simple enough. Sure enough the very next month there was a knock on her door one day and she answered it seeing a mailman delivering three Giant boxes before having her sign for them and leaving. All Rose could do for a moment was stand there before lightly kicking the stack of boxes. It felt heavy and barely budged from her light kick.
"... I need to buy a car."

he story of the Rainbow Corn.
The story of Glass Gem corn begins with an Oklahoma farmer named Carl Barnes. Barnes, now in his 80s, is half-Cherokee. He began growing older corn varieties in his adult years as a way to reconnect with his heritage.
In growing these older corn varieties, Barnes was able to isolate ancestral types that had been lost to Native American tribes when they were relocated in the 1800s to what is now Oklahoma. This led to an exchange of ancient corn seed with people he had met and made friends with all over the country.
At the same time, Barnes began selecting, saving, and replanting seeds from particularly colourful cobs. According to Barnes, the rainbow seed originally came from a crossing of "Pawnee miniature popcorns with an Osage red flour corn and also another Osage corn called ‘Greyhorse'."
'Glass Gems,' seen here, was the title that Barnes' protegee and fellow farmer, Greg Schoen came up with for a blue-green and pink-purple corn he grew in 2007.

"... Kay. Fair enough, pal."
Actually being a REALTOR sure was... different. Can't say she'd ever done something like this before.

Just a Unicorn and her treat lady! 💗😊 . This is Chicklet, she belongs to my physical therapist but I love spending time with her. I get to give her treats every time I visit and she lives for it. She tries to eat my knees because she thinks they’re food too 😂 She is also very curious and loves to lick and nip at me and my chair lol. . Check out the end of the post for a video of me feeding her! I tried to pet her when I was done but I accidentally got her in the eye cause she was so excited 😆 . #horse #horses #horsesofinstagram #equine #equines #equestrian #paraequestrian #paradressage #paradressagerider #chicklet #irishsportshorse #irishsporthorse #cross #grey #greyhorse #unicorn #treat #treattime #love #smile #goodgirl #strongereveryday #defyingperceptions #horsesgivemehope https://www.instagram.com/p/B2w6UqpHSab/?igshid=ie226werp4g5
