Big Butterfly Count 2023: My standout species
As another fabulous three weeks of counting in a vitally important citizen science project approaches its end, I have been reflecting on the many Big Butterfly Counts I have done over the past few weeks. Below are some of the key species I saw with a few comments.
Red Admiral
Where else could I start? This long time favourite butterfly of mine has grabbed the headlines and taken the count by storm with the sheer numbers of them around. It has been fascinating to see the unusually high numbers at this time of year for me, with it being more notable if it was a day I didn't see one than did in the butterfly count a species I might usually see in two or three of my Big Butterfly Counts in a year. Personally it has made me so happy to see so many and really struck to the core of how I fell in love with this charismatic species with some glorious times watching them, key moments in an amazing butterfly year I've had generally. I took the first two pictures in this photoset of Red Admirals at one of the most memorable counts I did this year at Egleton, Rutland Water at the start and on a recent evening at Lakeside Country Park. It also personifies the importance of the count with the indicator of climate change these numbers are with more now overwintering here. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-66395590
Summer stalwarts: Meadow Brown and Gatekeeper
I have just for fun actually just created two leaderboards out of all my counts this year so far, one overall and one for Lakeside Country Park where I did the most counts. Unsurprisingly Meadow Brown topped both with Gatekeeper third behind Small White overall and second at Lakeside. Where I saw less of their fellow key summer species Marbled White and Ringlet compared to previous years which in the ever shifting seasons perhaps emerged too early and their shorter seasons were waning and ceased here during the count, this pair have been ever present again with me seeing some very high numbers of them on counts. The usual passing of the baton I see where I go from seeing mostly Meadow Browns to mostly Gatekeepers on counts towards the end of it didn't really happen this year as both were high throughout, perhaps due to the Gatekeeper's notable early emergence this year too. I have felt really connected to these colourful butterflies during the three weeks and the Big Butterfly Count wouldn't be the same without them. It's been my best Big Butterfly Count for getting photos of the species included I think and I took the third and fourth in this set of Gatekeeper and fifth of Meadow Brown all at Lakeside.
The white butterflies: Small, Large and Green-veined
The white butterflies in the count have been ever present in my contributions also, with Small White like in 2021 for me really challenging the Meadow Brown and Gatekeeper for the top spots with so many seen. The elegant and alluring Green-veined White was one I notably saw more of in the count this year and I very much enjoyed doing so, taking the sixth and seventh pictures in this photoset of some at Lakeside. Large White is something I see less than I might think generally and I enjoyed some sightings of them during the count.
Speckled Wood
A surprise package this year for me, I have been very happy to observe a fair few of these intricately marked and joyful butterflies during the count this year, another that was more present for me than usual. I took the eighth picture in this photoset of one at Lakeside during the count.
Six-spot Burnet
Onto day flying moths included in the count now and before the count arrived I felt as though I was seeing more of this gorgeous moth the species that first got me into moths back in 2010 this year, but that's something easy to say whilst in the grip of their season. But whilst their season waned during it Big Butterfly Count proved that a bit for me with a high amount seen especially at Lakeside. It was a pleasure to see these dashing moths many times, I took the ninth picture in this photoset of one at Lakeside.
Jersey Tiger moth
Finally it's a quality over quantity moment as on Monday I was over the moon to spot the superb Jersey Tiger moth in the tenth picture in this photoset at Lakeside. It was only the second time I've ever seen this species and first during the Big Butterfly Count days. It was an amazing moment in my moth year getting a great view of it. But there is a notable point for quantity too as amazingly only days into the count I'd seen all of the Big Butterfly Count species in one of my counts apart from a Jersey Tiger. It was improbable I'd spot one given I'd only seen one before, but I did and for the first time ever it means I've every species at least once during my run of doing counts which feels nice.
I would do a highly commended list but fear I would end up saying all of the other species so thought I would say I was so happy to see every species and a few more for quality and quantity really made an impression on me this year. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed contributing to this amazing project again and sharing what I saw.

[ For I’ll write an Armored Core VI Verse/AU for your muse ]
World: Karakoram 3b Catalog Number: ISB0373 Type: terrestrial moon, mountainous Climate: varied, glacial or subtropical Population: 49 million Satellites: n/a Notable Features: space elevator
A habitable world only fractionally less massive than Earth, Karakoram 3b is the second moon orbiting a Saturn-like gas giant on the outer edge of its system's habitable zone. Tidally locked like most moons and kept in an eccentric orbit by Laplace resonance with the planet's other satellites, it experiences significant tidal heating and lithosphere compression, with the result being an extremely mountainous surface regularly dotted by volcanoes. The moon has low surface water coverage, though this is not the result of any scarcity—rather, its mountainous terrain hosts massive glaciers which lock up most of its water reserves. What seas and large lakes there are boast surprisingly warm climes, as do most lowland valleys, all heated by ubiquitous geothermal activity. The world is a study in extremes, with ice above and steam and sometimes even fire below.
Most of the arable land hosts subtropical conditions with hot and humid summers and extremely mild but wet winters, as the planet's temperature is regulated more by geological processes than stellar flux. That same tectonic activity has resulted in rich and easily accessed mineral resources from deep below the crust, which recommended the moon for colonization above and beyond even its quixotic habitability. Dominated by regional extractive mining concerns with all the attendant 'company town' developments one might expect, it functions both as a minor industrial hub in and of itself, and a major exporter of rare minerals to the nearby Seiko system, on account of Seiko 4's restrictive policies on mining and the comparatively more expensive mining operations on other celestial bodies there. Civil unrest and armed worker strikes are commonplace.
Name: Karin Kurosaki Augmentation: baseline Occupation: government enforcer Affiliation: Karakoram Elevator Authority Registration Number: Kr259 Callsign: Noxious Armored Core: Plume
Karakoram 3b is divided by its inhabitants into two hemispheres depending on what dominates the sky: strandside where the space elevator is more visible, and planetside where Karakoram 3 is more visible. The vicinity of the elevator is largely managed by the Karakoram Elevator Authority, which not only oversees the operation and defense of the elevator and its surrounding support infrastructure, but also guarantees passage to and from the elevator both on the moon and throughout the system at large, and sometimes even out-system to export destinations. It is the closest thing the moon has to a government, with its core territory always getting first pick of imports from other systems and having notably higher living standards.
The daughter of a doctor who ran an independent clinic, Karin was born in a dense suburb near the elevator's base, and grew up in rather nice conditions compared to those found across most of the rest of the moon. Her life was not without tragedy however, as her mother died early in her childhood. Thereafter her heart was never really in schoolwork or helping out at the clinic, and her relationship with her family gradually faltered. The day she turned 18, she signed up with the KEA's security and enforcement arm, the Line Monitors.
Initially placed with armored forces rather than infantry, her aggression, simulation scores, and field experience marked her out, and she was promoted first to piloting a Muscle Tracer, then finally to one of the relatively few Armored Cores employed by the KEA. She has subsequently seen operations across the moon and system, and even been dispatched on escort missions elsewhere.
Tumblr media
A relatively low-tech and straightforward AC, most of Plume's construction is rugged and functional, although some of its weaponry is surprisingly sophisticated. It remains unclear why or under what circumstances ALLMIND chose to provide the KEA with weaponry, or whether such hardware was specifically intended for Karin or not, but whatever the case she fields it now.
Plume is built around shock and awe. Quite fast for what it is, it makes extensive use of indiscriminate high-explosive weapons to dominate its battlespace, with its spread bazooka, explosive thrower, and detonating missile launcher all laying waste to opponents either massed or singular. Its flamethrower is employed to finish whatever remains. In peer-level combat with enemy ACs, an assault boost-assisted kick leading into point-blank shots with the bazooka and thrower, and a follow-up with the flamethrower or assault armor, are a common occurrence.

Winnall Moors, Winchester: A special place
Precious moments shared with Roe Deers watched with glee beside the paths, the wall of spring birdsong and the pure purple and white comfrey that adorns the reserve immerses me in natural glory.
On a bright winter’s day I cherished the splendour of watching Kingfishers dash and dive, ethereal blue and orange. On a bright spring day I was bewitched by the complex and tuneful call of the Garden Warbler, getting exhilarating glimpses of this bird. I could have jumped for joy as I saw a Water Rail at the water's edge from the bridge. Tit species, Goldcrest, the energetic and uplifting call of the Cetti’s Warbler, strong views of exotic looking Jays and the immersive winter spectacle of charming Redwings are other avian highlights. Buzzard, Sparrowhawk and Red Kite are roving raptors which are splendid to see here, I’ve enjoyed precious views of perched Buzzards. Other wonderful warblers, Robin, Blackbird, Wren, Mute Swan, Mallard and Moorhen other birds to enjoy here.

Butterflies bring bursts of colour in the spring and summer and on sunny days into the autumn, precious Peacock, ravishing Red Admiral and gorgeous Green-veined White and Gatekeeper some of the standouts. Orange Tip and Speckled Wood are good to see here too as are a stunning Scarlet Tiger moth and Hornet Mimic hoverfly. A dazzling and mighty Golden-ringed Dragonfly captivated me in the summer and in autumn the pond was brimming with dragonflies, especially ruby Common Darters with actions of reproduction observed with bold Migrant and Southern Hawkers a treat to see too.

Seas of Michaelmas daisies adorning the reserve signals the approach of autumn. White deadnettle, woundwort and forget-me-not are other little floral gems of the site and resplendent hemp agrimony paints the site pink in summer. Water mint, purple loosestrife, herb-Robert and ragged Robin are other beautiful flowers to see here. Guelder rose berries bring a rich red colour. There is always an immense sense of tranquility as I enter this reedbed paradise. The reedbeds full of energy in the summer and eerily lit by the sun in winter months. The inspiring trees and River Itchen are a sweet natural embrace.

Maeng da White Powder: Exploring Effects and Uses for Optimal Results
White Maeng Da Kratom powder has gained widespread popularity in recent years due to its potent effects and versatility. Despite misconceptions about its origins, it is derived from the same species of kratom tree as other varieties, with the key difference lying in the timing of leaf harvest and the subsequent processing.
