Wealdstone and Ickenham Youth Football Clubs secure permanent home
Thanks to support from various organizations including Middlesex FA, the Premier League, The FA, and the government's Football Foundation, Wealdstone and Ickenham Youth Football Clubs are set to establish permanent homes for their operations.
Wealdstone, a grassroots youth football club founded in 2008, hosts 49 youth teams catering to ages four to 18 year of age at New Pond Playing Fields in Ruislip. Meanwhile, Ickenham, formed in 2006, serves over 500 youngsters across 13 age groups at Hillingdon House Farm, Uxbridge.
Both clubs have recently been accepted into the Football Foundation's Home Advantage Programme, which assists grassroots clubs in securing long-term leases or licenses for their playing sites. This opportunity comes after successful applications by Hillingdon Council last year.
As part of the programme, Wealdstone and Ickenham will receive guidance and support from the Foundation and The FA, along with legal assistance to streamline the transfer process. Additionally, they can apply for up to £250,000 in funding to enhance facilities, including security fencing, storage units, maintenance machinery, and catering cabins. Securing permanent homes not only solidifies the clubs' presence in their communities but also sets the stage for growth and self-sustainability.

'What A Load of Rubbish' A Brief Precis. A Look At The Candidates For 2022 Lewes FC Board Elections Hustings
‘What A Load of Rubbish’ A Brief Precis. A Look At The Candidates For 2022 Lewes FC Board Elections Hustings
I have sat through the election addresses so you don’t have to waste your time. If you wanted to watch and learn about their points of view on issues of the club’s huge trading losses, fans matchday experience, volunteering, linking to the town, transparency and democracy and a big etcetera none of them are interested except in the daily grind. I’d suggest maybe they should not be anywhere near…

Are you not entertained?
Tumblr media
Every Sunday thousands of children entertain audiences in the Grassroots Republic in adult crafted Amphitheatres where the winner takes nothing at all.
At the start of the week the citizens of the Grassroots Republic start preparing for the fixture at the weekend. Children as young as six and seven, irrespective of how they want to play and their technical and physical ability, are made to train during the week for the performance at the weekend where they will face local opposition. Freedom of play and creativity is replaced by carefully planned drills to address the team’s weaknesses.
On match day motivational talks and tactics are delivered to bewildered children who have no idea what is expected of them. They enter the amphitheatre knowing they have to keep the crowd happy. The opposition take the lead and soon the atmosphere changes. Instructions bellowed out from the perimeter by both manager and parents. “Shoot”, “pass it”, “look up”, “have a go”, “hit it” as he/she breaks through on goal. Treats are promised if they win. If they lose everyone is blamed including the coach who sent them to battle ill-equipped, or the young referee who didn’t know what he was doing and cost them the win.
Their performance is met with the same analysis that you see on your TV’s every Saturday night on Match of the Day by their coach and their parents.
“If he passed quicker we would have..”
“If he had a shot...”
“If it wasn’t for ....... we could have...”
youtube
The stats are there for all to see. The number of children, players and referees, leaving the game far too early because of adults ruining their experience should still shock us all. We should all feel responsible and ensure the game is about them and their development as opposed to our own entertainment.
There are however many venues in the Grassroots Republic where the children are not sent out to battle and the adults sit silent and only provide positive encouragement; encouraging the children to play and make their own decisions. Where children feel brave enough to play their own game without fear of reprisal. Where the social corner is much more important and results are insignificant.  Where the children want to win but the audience just want to enjoy getting together to watch their children having fun playing a sport they love.
Tumblr media
These venues are more common now and hopefully one day in the not so distant future all adults in the Grassroots Republic will no longer feel it’s about them, and their need to be entertained by their children. Where what matters most is that children are having fun playing with their friends and mum/dad is proud of them regardless of the result.
The agents of change in our area are most importantly the clubs themselves who champion the FA’s Respect Campaign and make sure it is about the kids and not the adults. They are supported by our League, the East Lancashire Football Alliance League, whose Respect scores are reflective of the work done to create the right environment for children to play. There is also one man who deserves a lot of credit. Our county FA’s safeguarding officer Neil Yates. His Adults in Junior Football Workshop has been instrumental as a vehicle of change and helping clubs get the message across to their parents. We’ve used it every year to help reinforce what is important and so do a lot of the other clubs in the area.
Tumblr media
All they can do though is educate. The positive change we’ve seen over the last few years in match day environment is due to parents, managers included, who measure success not by winning or losing but the importance of the social corner and it’s effect on the development of their children.
Like the Clitheroe Wolves U9′s parents who provided a hot brew and biscuits for our parents this weekend during our game. Or an U8′s manager (Michael Fogarty from Rossendale Valley) who thought it would be a better idea to mix our teams up for our arranged friendly rather than us vs them. My favourite was when one of our parents brought enough food to feed an army to one of our friendly games and both sets of boys sat down together after the game for a picnic whilst both sets of parents praised both teams.  Everyone enjoys the spectacle that is grassroots football and there are no victims, only winners.
Long live the beautiful game!
