9 people I would like to get to know better
Tagged by @colourme-feral at this post here. Thanks dear friend! 🥰 Because of your post you got me Googling packing cubes as well, but my fallback has always been resealable (and reusable, so not single-use) plastic bags for socks and underwear when packing. 👍
last song: I've been listening to two lately, back and forth. One is ஒரு தெய்வம் தந்த பூவே/Oru Deivam Thantha Poove (O Flower Gifted from a God), a hauntingly beautiful ode sung in the voice of an adoptive mother to her adopted child, recommended to me by dear friend @neuroticbookworm. It's a precious gift, and I need to read the translated lyrics to fully grasp how the melody amplifies the meaning, but each time I listen to this it brings a little tear to my eye.
youtube
The second is uplifting in a different way – เธอหมุนรอบฉัน ฉันหมุนรอบเธอ (You Revolve Around Me, I Revolve Around You) by Scrubb, introduced to me by dear @recentadultburnout. It's a jaunty, retro-style Thai song that was also in the 2gether soundtrack and is an instant serotonin booster.
youtube
favorite color: Deepest blue.
last movie/tv show: Ack. Does Wheel of Fortune count? I also watched an old episode of Nigella Express on YouTube, so let's go with that:
youtube
I love the sound of Nigella's voice and her breezy approach while demonstrating eminently doable recipes. But I was actually using this episode to hone my location-tracking skills... Nigella and her daughter Mimi can be seen stopping by a bakery on the way to her daughter's school at timestamp 4.50 – there are enough visual clues in there to track down the location of the bakery (Boulangerie Poilâne at Elizabeth Street in London) and also Mimi's school (Francis Holland School for Girls at Graham Terrace). Purely an intellectual exercise, and quell the alarms please – the episode is from 2007 and Mimi has long since grown up and graduated, so there's no privacy risk. (Both the school and the bakery in 2023 are still at the same locations they were in 2007, though Poilâne – I love the one in Paris – has had a paint job and looks quite a bit different today).
sweet/spicy/savory: Sweet wins out (confirmed chocoholic that I am), but I also LOVE my spicy prik kee noo, and every meal must also be protein-heavy, so savory gets a shout-out too. (As you can probably tell I find it hard to make decisions, especially around food. 😂)
relationship status: Attached, and have been for a very long time.
current obsession: Fruitcake! A post for a three-ingredient fruitcake popped up on my YouTube feed, and because we're heading into the Yuletide season I became obsessed with making fruitcake in time for Christmas. I've been churning out variations ever since the first one fell a little bit short of expectations, and because of my tweaks it's more like eight ingredients now, so… not quite the time and labor saving hack I envisioned. But it's a delicious obsession nonetheless, plus I get to eat lots of fruitcake along the way.
last thing I googled: Fruitcake recipes! Especially for ideas on how to reduce FODMAPs.
No pressure tags: @pandasmagorica, @bengiyo, @solitaryandwandering, @shinybiancachu, @sillybiscuitshepherdskeleton, @respectthepetty, @teaofdesaster, @lurkingteapot, @sunshinechay.
Only listed nine because those are the rules of this game (literally in the header) but if I haven't tagged you dear friends, please know that I wanted to and if you would like to play please do. Always fun to get to know people better here! 💖

Madrid CFF 0-2 FC Barcelona Femeni: Player Ratings
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Photo courtesy: FC Barcelona Femeni X In the world of football, anticipation often builds before the first whistle. For FC Barcelona Femeni fans, the wait for the first match of the season felt even longer due to unexpected player strikes. However, when the day finally arrived, the anticipation was met with jubilation as the Catalan team emerged victorious with a 2-0 win in an away match against Madrid CFF, securing a 2-0 victory. Goals from Caroline Graham Hansen and Asisat Oshoala secured the three points for the Blaugrana in their season opener. Now, let's delve into the player ratings and dissect how each player performed in Madrid CFF 0-2 FC Barcelona Femeni.
Cata Coll: 7
fresh off an impressive showing in the just concluded 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup, started between the goalposts for Barcelona Femeni. Throughout the match, she had little to do, as Madrid CFF struggled to create significant scoring opportunities. Cata Coll maintained her composure and never really looked troubled, making it a quiet day for her.
Lucy Bronze: 7.5
the experienced defender started the game with a bang, delivering a dangerous cross into the box in the opening minute that nearly resulted in a goal. Bronze not only excelled offensively but also demonstrated her defensive prowess. She won back possession effectively when she lost the ball and managed to mark and contain Kundananji. However, it's worth noting that she received a yellow card during the match. Irene Paredes: 7.5 known for her reliability in defense, didn't disappoint. She stood firm in the backline, thwarting Madrid CFF's counterattacks and through balls. Paredes showcased her defensive prowess with 2 clearances, 2 blocked shots, and 1 interception, a ground duel along with two aerial duels won.
Mapi Leon: 7.5
Mapi Leon's impact on the game was evident from the start. Her well-taken corner early in the match caused problems for Madrid CFF's defense. Throughout the game, Leon contributed to the team's attack with precise passes and excellent crosses into the opposition box. Her defensive contributions included 1 clearance and 1 interception. Notably, she created 1 big chance and completed 4 accurate crosses out of 8 attempts.
Ona Batlle: 8.5
Ona Batlle made her presence felt as she played through the left-back position. She confidently drove down the left wing, delivering dangerous crosses into the box and creating goal-scoring opportunities. Batlle fit seamlessly into the team, despite it being her debut for the garnet and blue. Her standout moment was an exquisite assist to Asisast Oshoala for Barcelona Femeni's second goal. With 2 key passes, 1 big chance created, and 1 assist, Batlle was instrumental in the victory. Batlle's pinpoint assist to Oshoala for the second goal demonstrated her understanding of her teammates' movements. She also forced a save from the Madrid CFF keeper with a well-taken shot in the second half.
Aitana Bonmati: 7
Aitana Bonmati had a relatively quiet first half, struggling to get much involvement with the ball. However, she maintained composure and kept things tidy. Although she didn't impact the game as much as she would have liked, her presence remained felt.
Ingrid Engen: 8
Ingrid Engen came close to opening the scoring with a header, narrowly missing the target. She played a vital role in the middle of the park, providing passing options and dropping deep to receive balls. Engen's defensive contributions were equally impressive, as she won crucial duels for the team. Her stats included 4 out of 5 ground duels won, 2 out of 3 aerial duels won, 1 clearance, 1 interception, 4 tackles, and 2 key passes. Her ability to provide passing options, defensive coverage, and crucial duels won demonstrated her value to the team.
Patri Guijarro: 7.5
Patri Guijarro intercepted balls effectively and worked tirelessly to regain possession for the team in the opposition half. Although she didn't see much of the ball to influence the game significantly, Guijarro held her own in her position. Guijarro's performance was solid, considering her limited time on the ball.
Caroline Graham Hansen: 8
Caroline Graham Hansen dazzled in the forward line, fluidly rotating positions with her teammates. Her beautiful finish opened the scoring, leaving the Madrid CFF goalkeeper with no chance to react. Graham Hansen's creativity shone through with 1 big chance created, 7 out of 18 accurate crosses, 6 key passes, and 1 shot on target.
Alexia Putellas: 7
Alexia Putellas took on the role of the number 9, pressing high relentlessly for the team. Although she missed a couple of chances, her efforts couldn't be faulted. Her header from Aitana's cross was inches away from opening the scoring in the second half. Later in the game, she dropped into midfield.
Claudia Pina: 7.5
Claudia Pina's dynamic presence in the attack was a continuous threat to Madrid CFF. She alternated between left and central positions, posing a continuous goal threat. Her footwork and precise pass assisted in the opening goal scored by Caroline Graham Hansen. Pina's dynamic presence added depth to Barcelona's attack before she was substituted for Mariona Caldentey. Her performance was marked by a solid 1 assist. Substitutes - Mariona Caldentey: Not rated - Mariona played through the left-wing forward position and combined effectively with Ona Batlle on the left wing, although she didn't have many opportunities to impact the game. - Marta Torrejon: Not rated - Marta held her position well but didn't have significant involvement in the game. - Asisat Oshoala: 7.5 - Asisat Oshoala was brought on as a substitute, and she wasted no time in making her presence felt. Within minutes of entering the game, she found the back of the net, scoring a crucial goal to seal the win. - Bruna Vilamala: Not rated - Bruna was brought in late in the game and contributed with her energetic pressing but didn't have much else to do. - Esmee Brugts: Not rated - Esmee made her Barcelona Femeni debut late in the game but had limited involvement. FC Barcelona Femeni began their season on a high note with a 2-0 victory over Madrid CFF. The team displayed resilience and a well-rounded performance, with standout contributions from Ona Batlle and Caroline Graham Hansen. Lives of Others
Tumblr media
There are a few lines from Jorie Graham’s poem “Nearing Dawn” (from her 2008 collection Sea Change) that have been going through my head, quasi-accurately of course, for the better part of a decade.*
Here they are, emphasis mine. I’ve replicated the breaks as faithfully as possible:
great sands behind there, the pharaohs, the millennia of carefully prepared and buried bodies, the ceremony and the weeping for them, all back there, lamentations, libations, earth full of bodies everywhere, our bodies, some still full of incense, & the sweet burnt offerings, & the still-rising festival out-cryings—& we will inherit from it all nothing—& our ships will still go,
I’ve been thinking about these lines lately for a number of reasons, mostly because an old friend recently experienced a terrible loss. But also because it’s now April, and therefore almost the thirteenth (!) anniversary of my mother’s death. I first read Sea Change shortly before my mom died, and the idea of the earth being “full of bodies everywhere” particularly struck me then, as it’d become obvious her illness would soon run its course.
The thing is, Graham’s lines are entirely accurate—over the entire course of human history, far more people have died than are currently alive. Indeed, according to the Population Reference Bureau “about 117 billion members of our species have ever been born on Earth”; the current world population is somewhere around 8 billion.
This is both grim—the world really is filled with the dead; the world is more the dead’s than it is the living’s—and unbelievable, given how complicated and rich the interior of one’s life generally seems. And it’s not like understanding the living, and what ails them (below is a figure showing causes of disability-adjusted life years in the US in 2019) is easy.
Tumblr media
For a more timely example of “numbers and life and boggling complexity and thinking of the dead is weird, whoa,” here’s the March 31 update on Russian troop and equipment losses from the Kyiv Post (via Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense).
Though these numbers may well be inflated—the Russian casualty figures published by the US and NATO are markedly lower—the point makes itself. Even inflated, these are astounding numbers for a weeks-old war, and for the violence and stories they imply; for example, many tanks have a crew of three; when tank crews are killed, they’re often killed in terrifically violent ways, by shrapnel and explosive shock waves and fire.
Tumblr media
So what is one to do with these competing, or at least jostling, ways of seeing the world? I don’t know that there’s a good answer, because living often entails holding jostling things in one’s head simultaneously. Perhaps Mother Teresa’s way of looking at it—”If I look at the mass, I will never act. If I look at the one, I will.”—is a sound approach.
Anyhow, here’s some more poetry, from Ashbery’s “Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror”:
Tomorrow is easy, but today is uncharted. Desolate, reluctant as any landscape To yield what are laws of perspective After all only to the painter’s deep Mistrust, a weak instrument though Necessary. Of course some things Are possible, it knows, but it doesn’t know Which ones. Some day we will try To do as many things as are possible And perhaps we shall succeed at a handful Of them, but this will not have anything To do with what is promised today, our Landscape sweeping out from us to disappear On the horizon.
...
*To put “highbrow poetry going through one’s head for years and years” in perspective, I’ve also had the A-Team theme song in my head since my early twenties. Dun dun dun, dun dah dun dun dun.

Spain: 2022-23 UEFA Nations League Winners
Tumblr media
Match in brief: Dogged Croatia finally fall on penalties The early stages were an exercise for Spain in tempering the exuberance of the Croatia players and their horde of followers inside the stadium. They did just that and nearly made the breakthrough twice in the opening 15 minutes, first when Dominik Livaković spilled Fabián Ruiz's cross-cum-shot against the post and then when Gavi dragged an attempt just wide from the edge of the area.
Keeping this Vatreni outfit quelled has been a problem for many sides in recent years, though, and back they came, Aymeric Laporte and Robin Le Normand forced into last-ditch blocks before Unai Simón sprawled across his goal to keep out Ivan Perišić's header – spirits and volume raised once more.
Zlatko Dalić had shown faith in centre-backs Martin Erlić and Josip Šutalo – just 12 caps between them – and La Roja struggled to create clear-cut chances against the pair, Marco Asensio's flashing header over the bar a rare opportunity early in the second half. Mario Pašalić went closer when heading into the side netting, while Rodri's rasping shot from distance whistled past the target as the contest remained goalless heading into the final quarter of normal time.
Luis de la Fuente turned to the pace and trickery of Ansu Fati, and lucky charm Joselu, but Spain struggled to stamp their authority on the relentless Vatreni, whose industry and threat was epitomised by 34-year-old left-back Ivan Perišić continuing to maraud down the left, then clearing off the line to deny Fati the breakthrough. Asensio swept wide as the clock struck 90 minutes, Spain ending normal time in the ascendancy.
Croatia and extra time have been inseparable friends in recent years, their only blemish coming in their UEFA EURO 2020 round of 16 defeat by Spain, and they looked the more likely to prise an opening even if few were forthcoming. Nacho blocked brilliantly from Lovro Majer while deflections denied Asensio and Rodri as penalties could not be averted.
Six successful spot kicks followed before Unai Simón's outstretched boot repelled Majer's effort, only for Laporte to rattle the bar at match point. Unai Simón kept out Petković next up, paving the way for Dani Carvajal to coolly seal the silverware for La Roja.
Player of the Match: Marcelo Brožović (Croatia) "His relentless effort both in and out of possession. Connecting attack from back line to the front and working extremely hard defensively covering almost the whole pitch." UEFA Technical Observer Panel
Elvir Islamović, Croatia reporter It was a real chess game between the two big teams. Croatia were battling really well, they were controlling the match with a lot of discipline, but eventually they lost on penalties against Spain. This generation missed a big chance to win the first trophy for their country, but they don't have a single reason to be unhappy. This is still a winning team and the best group of players in Croatia's history. After two World Cup medals, they return home with silver in the Nations League and that is something only the best teams can do.
Graham Hunter, Spain reporter The 'old' Spain, winners of two EUROs and a World Cup in their 'golden age' didn't play like this. They commanded, they controlled. Then they struck. Here, again, La Roja suffered from their modern ailment. No killer touch. Stubborn blue-collar work ethic replaced blue-riband brilliance. Eventually the match was in their grasp. It looked like they were going to keep spurning chances, that they were going to fluff their lines but, in the end, two superb moments from their goalkeeper were enough.
Luis de la Fuente, Spain coach: "We have to bear in mind the 16 best teams in Europe were involved and the best four were in the semi-finals. Getting to the final is a big achievement. We deserve credit. We were up against a top team who are experienced and finished third at the World Cup, so it's a big deal."
Dani Carvajal, Spain defender: "It wasn't me being chosen [to take a penalty] – I put my hand up. I've only ever taken one in my career, in the Spanish Super Cup, but I wanted to take this one. When the game ended, I went to the manager. They were doing a five-player shortlist and I told them that if any of the players were hesitant or weren't confident enough, I would like to take one and, if not, I would take the sixth. In the end, the game gave me the opportunity I wanted."
Rodri, Spain midfielder: "We showed such mental strength as a team. We were really good in the extra time. Above all in the shoot-out. When you you get here this is about winning. We were so competitive. Against a team which eliminated Brazil from the World Cup, which seems to always get to finals. A great team and we managed to compete and then beat them."
Zlatko Dalić, Croatia coach: "First, I congratulate Spain and our players on a great game. Thank you to the fans, as we had great support. We lost – too bad – but we have to be proud. We made it to the final but we didn't win. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. The stakes were high, the game was tough and the opponent was good. We ran again for 120 minutes. We were quality, we competed with them. I have nothing to regret."
Lovro Majer, Croatia midfielder: "We are sad – especially me, because I didn't convert my penalty – but that's football. We gave everything we could but lost on penalties. We did well in the competition."
Key stats Spain played in the Nations League final for the second successive edition, becoming the first nation to play in the decider on more than one occasion. La Roja failed to score for only the second time in 20 Nations League matches; for Croatia it was just the second time in 16 games. Spain have been successful in five of their last seven deciders at current major international final tournaments (EURO, Nations League and World Cup). La Roja become the second team, after France, to win the EURO, World Cup and Nations League. At the last two World Cup final tournaments, UEFA EURO 2020 and now here, Croatia have played extra time on eight occasions; they have won six – four on penalties – but lost the other two to Spain. Line-ups Croatia: Livaković; Juranović (Stanišić 112), Šutalo, Erlić, Perišić; Modrić, Brozović, Kovačić; Pašalić (Petković 61), Kramarić (Majer 90+1), Ivanušec (Vlašić 78)
Spain: Unai Simón; Jesús Navas (Carvajal 97), Le Normand (Nacho 78), Laporte, Jordi Alba; Rodri, Fabián Ruiz (Merino 78); Asensio, Gavi (Olmo 87), Pino (Fati 66); Morata (Joselu 66)
The teams switch attentions back to qualifying for UEFA EURO 2024 in September, when Croatia face Latvia and Armenia, while Spain take on Georgia and Cyprus.
The next edition of the UEFA Nations League, featuring quarter-finals and promotion/relegation play-offs, begins in September 2024, with the finals the following June.

Does Haaland make Man City favourites? Is VAR getting worse?
Tumblr media
With this season's Champions League quarterfinalists now set, our writers answer some of the big questions arising from the round of 16 second legs. With this season's Champions League quarterfinalists now set, our writers answer some of the big questions arising from the round of 16 second legs.    8:00 AM ET This season's Champions League round of 16 is done and dusted with some European heavyweights falling by the wayside like Liverpool, who have reached three finals in the last five years, and a Paris Saint-Germain side featuring Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi. Friday's quarterfinal draw will feature plenty of European heavyweights such as defending champions Real Madrid and recent winners Chelsea and Bayern Munich. Reigning Premier League champions Manchester City are also in the hat along with Portuguese side Benfica, while Serie A has three clubs in the last eight: AC Milan, Inter Milan and Napoli. Our writers Mark Ogden, Julien Laurens and James Olley answer some of the big questions arising from this round of games. - Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.)
What caught your eye from the round-of-16 second legs?
Ogden: The poor standard of refereeing, and VAR, has really stood out during the round of 16, and it is even more noticeable because the Champions League generally operates to a much higher level than the domestic leagues in Europe. Two English teams, Chelsea and Manchester City, have been the biggest beneficiaries of some bewildering decisions, with German sides Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig on the wrong end of them. Chelsea were fortunate to be awarded a penalty during their 2-0 second-leg win against Dortmund when defender Marius Wolf was judged to have handled the ball. Referee Danny Makkelie didn't point to the spot until the VAR suggested a review on the pitchside monitor. Wolf was so close to the ball that he couldn't move out of the way, but Makkelie awarded the penalty when he should have dismissed the VAR review. Leipzig suffered an even heavier blow during their 7-0 defeat at City. VAR once again intervened in a penalty incident, calling on referee Slavko Vincic to review an apparent handball by Benjamin Henrichs. The reality was that Henrichs had his back to Rodri, whose header brushed his arm and fell to a City player without deviating in movement. It was incredibly soft, but once the penalty was awarded, Erling Haaland put City 1-0 ahead. Moments later, Timo Werner was booked, despite being on the receiving end of a foul by Ederson which could have resulted in a red card for the City goalkeeper. Yet VAR did not intervene. Two huge decisions which, had they gone Leipzig's way, could have resulted in a much different outcome. VAR and the referees have to be better in the quarterfinals and beyond.
Editor's Picks
2 Related Laurens: It is probably the most obvious answer (and, I promise, I tried to find something else to be more original) but nothing can beat Haaland's quintuple against RB Leipzig. He might have got six goals had he stayed longer on the pitch, but Pep Guardiola took him off after 63 minutes. The Manchester City striker became only the third man in Champions League history to score five goals in the same game, after Messi and Luiz Adriano, and by becoming the youngest-ever player to reach 30 Champions League goals. For his club, he is now the top scorer in a single season with 39 goals, beating the old record of Tommy Johnson from 1929. Haaland still has as many as 19 more games to play before the end of the season. It is still an amazing achievement; Haaland had eight shots on the night, all on target, scored five goals with an xG (Expected Goals) of less than three. He was so aggressive in the box, so alert, so on it. He looked possessed at times. It was just incredible. Olley: If Graham Potter makes a success of his time at Chelsea, he may well look back on their second leg win over Dortmund as the turning point. Managers often talk about uniting the fans and making their home stadium a difficult place for visiting teams, but in Potter's case he did so in the knowledge this game served as something of a referendum on his management. An unconvincing win over Leeds United a few days earlier had at created a modicum of momentum heading into the game but, make no mistake, defeat against Dortmund would have ramped up the pressure on Potter. Dortmund were depleted -- Karim Adeyemi, Youssoufa Moukoko and goalkeeper Gregor Kobel all missed out injured while Julian Brandt was forced off after just five minutes -- but Chelsea produced a committed and defiant display, overcoming their goal-scoring problems to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit with a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge. The players showed they were behind Potter and although it will be some time before the majority of the fans are convinced the former Brighton & Hove Albion boss is the right man to lead them back to former glories, this win buys him time with a Champions League quarterfinal as proof of progress. They surely aren't good enough to lift the trophy in Istanbul, but, then again, most people felt that way before they won in 2012 and 2021... play1:09 Pep's idols: Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods ... and Julia Roberts? Pep Guardiola reveals his biggest failure at Manchester City was when his idol Julia Roberts went to visit Manchester United instead of his club.
Now the quarterfinalists are all set; which team is your favourite to lift the trophy in Istanbul?
Laurens: Pep Guardiola can be as sarcastic as he wants about the Champions League and what a failure he is and will always be, even if he wins the competition for the next three years. He can talk about Julia Roberts, Richard Gere or any Hollywood actor as much as he wants. His team are once again the big favourites of this Champions League, and not winning it would be a failure -- again. City have everything, really: the manager, the squad depth, the superstars, the clutch players, the winning mentality, the experience of going far and the motivation of not yet winning it. They should have won it already and they will surely eventually do so. This year is their year. The rest of the field is not at their level, not even Bayern Munich, Napoli or Real Madrid. Time is running out for Kevin De Bruyne, who turns 32 in June. Riyad Mahrez and Kyle Walker are already at that age, while Ikay Gundogan is out of contract this summer. Bernardo Silva could be leaving at the end of the season, too, a year after pushing for a departure. The most important thing is that surely Pep and City have learned from their past mistakes in the Champions League: the 2021 final loss, the semifinal of last season and all the previous quarterfinal disappointments. If they can do that, they will finally be ready to achieve their ultimate aim. play2:29 How good has Victor Osimhen been? Steve Nicol, Craig Burley and Alejandro Moreno offer high praise for the Victor Osimhen after Napoli advance to the next round in the Champions League. Ogden: This may be a case of heart overruling head, but Napoli have been the most exciting team in this season's Champions League and it would be great for the game if Luciano Spalletti can take the club all the way to glory in Istanbul. They certainly have the players, and it's not just about top scorer Victor Osimhen. Kim Min-Jae, Piotr Zielinski, Hirving "Chucky" Lozano and Giovanni Simeone have all had outstanding seasons, while Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has arguably been the breakthrough star of the 2022-23 Champions League. The big challenge for Napoli, who are nailed on to win Serie A this season for the first time since 1990, is to hold their nerve and play their own game against a European superpower such as Real Madrid or Bayern Munich. If they stick to what has served them so well, Napoli can beat anybody, but the top clubs usually find a way to win the Champions League. We haven't seen a surprise team win the competition since Jose Mourinho's FC Porto in 2004, so maybe this is Napoli's time. Olley: It should, in all probability, be Manchester City but I can't say that a team clearly stands out from the rest at this stage. Mark makes a compelling case for Napoli -- and an 18-point lead at the top of Serie A gives them the chance to do what other clubs can't, which is rest players in the league to keep everyone fully fresh for the latter stages of the Champions League. City have been knocking on the door for years but, even though they thrashed Leipzig in midweek, they have not been anything like their fluid best for much of the season. The jury is out as to whether this Bayern Munich is as strong as previous incarnations -- although we must all take note when club legend Lothar Matthaus says this group may be their best-ever squad. And then we come to the team that mask their own weaknesses and exploit others better than anyone else: Real Madrid. With little conviction, given Napoli's form, City's individuals and Bayern's pedigree, perhaps Real's knowhow can help Carlo Ancelotti trump his rivals once more. play2:35 Nicol: Only thing for Liverpool is they didn't get embarrassed Steve Nicol, Craig Burley and Alejandro Moreno react to Real Madrid beating Liverpool 6-2 on aggregate to advance in the Champions League.
After Haaland's five-goal haul, what's the most impressive individual performance you've seen live in the Champions League?
Olley: Messi scoring all four as Barcelona beat Arsenal 4-1 at Camp Nou in April 2010. Maybe the Gunners made the mistake of taking the lead. At that stage, Arsenal led this quarterfinal tie 4-2 on aggregate but what came next was a true force of nature. Messi took it upon himself to deliver the kind of virtuoso performance that epitomises his glittering career. The first goal was a fierce drive as the ball fell to him on the edge of the box, the second a close-range finish lifted over Manuel Almunia. His hat-trick goal was sublime; sent racing clear, he scooped a left-footed shot over the onrushing Almunia with embarrassing ease, prompting that worshipping celebration from an awe-struck Barcelona crowd. The fourth came with a drop of the shoulder, panicking defenders contorting themselves in ever more desperate shapes, and a shot saved by Almunia but drilled through his legs on the rebound. This was a high-pressure occasion but here was a 22-year-old making the game look so breathtakingly, devastatingly simple. Perhaps Wenger put it best: "He made the impossible possible." The image that lingers in my mind came just after the final whistle. Messi was given the match ball and as Arsenal's players looked crestfallen, Barca supporters stood in disbelief, the little magician at the centre of it all simply spun the ball in his hand wearing a beaming smile, so fresh-faced he looked ready immediately to do it all over again.

It may seem unlikely now, six years on, but at the time the game was billed as a clash between Ronaldo and Atleti's rising star Antoine Griezmann, who was enjoying an outstanding season for Diego Simeone's team. There was genuine belief that Atleti could avenge the Champions League final defeats of 2014 and 2016 against their city rivals, with the France forward inspiring them to the final and outshining Ronaldo in the process. But Ronaldo was having none of that. It seemed as though he was given extra motivation to prove he was still the king of Madrid and he dominated the game. He also recorded two landmarks by netting his 50th goal in the Champions League knockout stages and equalling Messi's record of seven hat tricks in the competition. Laurens: I could pick any moment from Karim Benzema in the knockout phase last season; I was there for all of it. I had never witnessed anything like it before. He scored 10 goals in the six games that he and Real Madrid played on their way to the final at the Stade de France. Read the full article

Manchester City Chase Barcelona Star | 먹튀검증
Manchester City are still being linked with a move for Barcelona youngster 먹튀검증, according to the player's father. The possible bid for the 17-year-old Mexican international emerged earlier this year, and his father Zizinho, a former Brazil international, says that it is still on.
"The news is certain, but the subject is in the hands of the agent," he said. "We will not decide, but Barca know the situation as we have had contact with their sporting director, Txiki Beguiristain." In March Zizinho said: "There is interest from Manchester City.
"However, I cannot give more information now as Giovani's agent is the one in charge of all this, it's him who is dealing with negotiations. "I can't say for sure if Giovani will go to another team. There are still games to play in La Liga and while there are, he's only thinking about Barcelona.
"We don't want to get ahead of ourselves, there is interest, but first he has to concentrate on Barcelona."
Late goal gives Leeds hope - League 1 Play Off
Dougie Freedman snatched a goal in stoppage time to give Leeds United hope for Thursday's second leg at Brunton Park after underdogs Carlisle had built a surprise two-goal advantage at Elland Road.
Carlisle-born Paul Huntington sent a high ball into the goalmouth where Freedman, on loan from Crystal Palace, blasted it home. Goals by Danny Graham and Marc Bridge-Wilkinson had stunned below-par Leeds in the supercharged League One play-off semi-final, first leg.
Graham, who had a spell on loan at Leeds from Middlesbrough in 2006, got a touch to Simon Hackney's volley to give the Cumbrians a 32nd-minute lead and former Bradford City midfielder Bridge-Wilkinson struck the second, five minutes after the break. Hackney's darting runs and crosses created havoc in the Leeds defence before he limped off in the 69th minute.
Leading scorer Jermaine Beckford wasback after injury for Leeds and Carlisle welcomed the return of skipper and defender Danny Livesey after suspension. The atmosphere was reminiscent of Leeds' nights in the Champions League as Elland Road was a cauldron of noise, mainly made by the home fans.
Yet it was the Cumbrians that proved their credentials for the big occasion. Carlisle boss John Ward had promised his team would attack and they almost took an eighth-minute lead when Bridge-Wilkinson shot against the outside of a post.
Although Freedman went close with two 20-yard efforts the visitors created plenty of chances, with Hackney to the fore. Leeds failed to heed the warning and when Graham met Hackney's centre, keeper Casper Ankergren conceded a corner which Leeds couldn't clear and, when Hackney tried a stinging volley from the left corner of the penalty box, team-mate Graham got the final touch into the net. Beckford should have equalised in the 43rd minute but, from Neil Kilkenny's defence-splitting pass, the striker's shot on the turn was well saved by Keiren Westwood.
Leeds' vulnerability on their right side was exposed again by Hackney, and from Evan Horwood's pass, Bridge-Wilkinson stabbed the ball past Ankergren from eight yards.
Leeds captain Jonathon Douglas had a header brilliantly tipped over the bar and Huntington's shot was cleared off the line but Huntington eventually got his reward.

Momentous week ahead of the International break
After Saturdays game at home to Sheffield United we take the first of this seasons international breaks before battle recommences at Sunderland on October 1st. Whist the season has on gone just over 20% of its course Saturday marks an appropriate time to have a look at Ryan Lowes boys and their efforts in the first two months of Ryan`s first full season. Before then, of course we face the league leaders at Deepdale and the outcome of that game may well colour the judgement of many as they look back on the first eight weeks of the campaign. We had two cracking games against Sheffield last season both ending 2-2 and I for one am looking forward to renewing our rivalry on Saturday. However, firstly, we will take a look back at Tuesday evening and a momentous occasion at Deepdale.
A game against Burnley at Deepdale always raises the hairs on the neck and this particular encounter was no different. However it wasnt quite the football that gave us goosepimples but the atmosphere inside Deepdale in the lead up to the game. I have to say that North End got it spot on in their timing and Choreography of proceeding in front of 20,212 inside Deepdale and all the viewers tuning into SKY. Both sets of fans behaved impeccably during the minutes silence and Russell Watson set the Stadium alight with him rousing rendition of God save the King. It was a special moment between two special clubs who were, of course, founder members of the Football League. On the field it was the visitors who held sway for the majority of the game and when we went a goal down early on I feared for North End for the first time this season. However this is a strong and resilliant Preston outfit, these days, and we got ourselves back into the game via a Jordan Storey header. After that we had to concede possession for the majority of the game but we defended very well and although the Clarets will feel a little hard donr by it was a real fighting point for North End that almost felt like one of Graham Westley`s winning draws.
On Saturday afternoon we welcome Sheffield United to Deepdale for what will be North End`s third consecutive home game after the postponement of the game at Bristol City last Saturday. The Blades have secured twenty points from their opening nine games and sit at the top of the section eight points ahead of North End who have drawn six of our nine games so far. North End sit top of the fewest goals conceded league having conceded just two in nie outings but Sheffield have only conceded five and have scored seventeen so its not difficult to see why they are top at this moment in time. One of the big talking points this season has been the form of Alan Browne and Daniel Johnson and some North End fans are now asking the question whether it is tiem to give McCann and Woodburn an extended run in those midfield positions. From a personal point of view I think it is because I dont think I have seen enough in the eleven games I ahve seen this season to warrant playing Browne and Johnson in front of McCann and Woodburn every week. Make no mistake North End are much better organised than they were under McAvoy of Neil for that matter but the lack of goals is starting to become a real concern. Maybe Riis and Parrott just need a couple of goals to get them goaing but anoth blank on Saturday will no doubt lead to much discussion over the two week break.
And finally this week;- I want to go back to Tuesday evening and the fantastic minutes applause given by both sets of fans in memory of young 19 years old Alex Tyson who we so tragically lost from the North End family earlier this month. I met Alex at one of the first PSC meetings and he struck me as an intensely passionate North End fan with a real sensible head on his shoulders. My thoughts are witl Alexs Dad, Pete, who is also a big North End fan, and with the rest of Alexs family at this tragic time in their lives. Rest in peace Alex, your place with the Gentry is assured.

GPT on Graham
Tumblr media
One of the nice, nice but frustrating, things about being a book reviewer and having friends at various publishers is that they're always sending me books, either in the hope that I'll review said books or to keep me in the loop or because my friends are simply cool, etc. Which is great! Being sent books is spectacular! But it can also be frustrating because I don't always—often?—have time to read everything I'm sent, let alone to pitch reviews to publications & then actually write about the books I'm sent.
Case in point: Jorie Graham's latest collection of poetry, To 2040, which was recently published by Copper Canyon Press. Maybe ChatGPT can help?
Though I haven't finished formulating my thoughts about the book, so far its themes are similar to those present in Graham's work since 2008's Sea Change, i.e., worries about climate change, technology, and the anthropocene writ large. Here are the opening lines of "Translation Rain" from To 2040:
I am writing this in code because I cannot speak or say / the thing. The thing which should be, or I so wish / could be / plumbed fathomed disinterred from this silence, this ever thickening / silence through which, once, the long thin stalks & stems, first
(Quoting Jorie Graham is difficult since so many of her lines are enjambed, and because right-aligned lines bedevil online text editors.)
So with both my backlog & Graham's hesitation about technology in mind, I wondered: what might ChatGPT have to say about her work? Nothing about To 2040, of course—because of how it was trained, the tool has "limited knowledge of world and events after 2021" according to OpenAI. Nonetheless, asking ChatGPT about Jorie Graham's work, of all technophonbic-leaning writers, strikes me as particularly...poetic. I don't know whether she'd be amused or offended. Both?
Here's ChatGPT's first go, in response to "write 100 words about Jorie Graham's poetry":
Jorie Graham's poetry is a captivating exploration of language, consciousness, and the intricate threads that weave through our lives. Her verses shimmer with a remarkable blend of intellectual rigor and emotional resonance, challenging readers to engage with complex themes and ideas. Graham's language is lush and evocative, creating vivid images that dance across the page. Her poems often grapple with existential questions, probing the boundaries of identity and the nature of time. Through her profound insights and lyrical craftsmanship, Graham invites us into a world where language becomes a conduit for profound introspection, offering a glimpse into the mysterious depths of human experience.
Not too bad, but the prose is overly purple for my taste, and my dude really could have gone easier on the adjectives. What then, I wondered, would ChatGPT have to say about Graham's work in fewer words? Here's "write 50 words about Jorie Graham's poetry":
Jorie Graham's poetry is a lyrical exploration of the human experience, blending intricate imagery with philosophical depth. Her words unravel the complexities of existence, delving into themes of time, memory, and our connection to the natural world. Through her evocative language, Graham invites readers to contemplate the profound mysteries of life.
Better, but still a bit flowery and overly broad. We're getting there.
Last but not least, "write 25 words about technology in Jorie Graham's poetry":
Jorie Graham's poetry embraces technology's paradoxical nature, exploring its power to connect and isolate, to illuminate and obfuscate, revealing its complex impact on human existence.
Well done, ChatGPT—this is the best yet, if only because you've managed to describe AI's impact, at least in the early going: "to illuminate and obfuscate." Which also sounds like poetry's impact? Indeed, brevity is the soul of wit.
...
Header image via Dall-E 2, generated by entering the prompt "painting of a robot typing after henri matisse," which was inspired by Matisse's "The Violinist at the Window" and Graham's "The Violinist at the Window, 1918" from Sea Change. The stunning opening lines of which read:
Here he is again, so thin, unbent, one would say captive—did winter ever leave—no one / has climbed the hill north of town in longer than one can remember—something hasn't / been fully loaded—life is blameless—he is a stem—& what here is cyclic, we would so
