Tumblr media
It is a mild Saturday evening, you set your tripod and ring light in front of your bathroom mirror and start recording a video for your YouTube channel.
“Hi, everyone! As you can tell by the title, today we are getting ready for my beautiful friend Zara's 23rd birthday party!” you say with a huge smile, clipping the front strands of your already done, straightened hair.
2019, the year you started your YouTube career. You were a sophomore student who was sharing a college dorm with a girl called Alicia and was living with the money your parents sent when you started posting random vlogs and make-up tutorials. At first, you weren’t planning a future on social media, but one day it suddenly turned into a job. You don’t remember how or when but you loved every second of it.
You started earning enough to live by before your graduation. Of course, you weren’t a million-subscribed person or weren’t earning millions of dollars, but you believed you could do that if you worked hard.
Spoiler: you did.
A short time after your graduation, in 2022, you hit a million subscribers. You had new and nice friends some of whom you still see and some of whom take advantage of you, you started getting PR packages from the brands you probably couldn’t afford before, and they started inviting you to their events.
You also met with Sydney Martin that year. It was a pretty cliché and could even count as a romantic way to meet someone: she ran into you and made you spill your coffee on you at the exit of a coffee shop. Thank god you had a puffer jacket on you, otherwise, that day might have been your last time seeing each other.
She was with a blonde, round-faced baby girl who looked exactly like her and later you learned her name was ‘Win’. The baby absolutely adored you the second you met and you also adored her cuteness.
Sydney offered you a coffee to compensate for what happened, no matter how much you said it was good and she didn't need to do anything, she didn't let you go. You spent the whole morning together, talking about your lives, and even went for a little walk together.
The rest is history.
By May 2022, you became so close that she invited you to her husband's birthday dinner with some of their close friends, co-workers, and of course, their partners.
And yes, that was the first and the last day you saw Mathew Barzal.
You saw him standing next to a dark blond-haired man at the bar side of the restaurant, which wasn't far away from your sight, they were talking with the birthday man, Matt Martin aka Marty. Mat was wearing a white tee and a pair of black pants, it was probably every guy’s go-to outfit, but he managed to make it look so enchanting.
You admired him for just a few seconds, but that didn't go unnoticed by Sydney, who was informing you about the people you were going to spend the night with. “The one you've been staring at is Mathew, not with a double ‘T’. And the blondie is Tito, well, Anthony but they call him Tito. They're teammates with Matt. Canadian gang.” she giggled, you mentally took notes of everything she told you.
She tilted her head to the hallway leading to the restrooms; a tall, blonde woman whose body was snugged in the all right places by a mini, emerald green dress was walking towards you.
“She's Maggie, Mathew's girlfriend. They've been together since,” she paused for a brief moment, “New Year's Eve, I guess. Anyways, I don't know much about her, but she's cool.” she changed the topic when Maggie came and sat across you. She gave you two a smile and minded her own business.
It's going to be a great night.
You kept talking until everyone joined you at the table, well, mostly Sydney talked and you just nodded. You felt abstracted from the room, not even listening to what she was telling you.
Were you stupid to feel upset over a man whom you just saw and didn't even talk to, because some other girl was luckier than you to have him? A man sitting right across you with his arm resting over that ‘lucky’ girl's chair?
Maybe not in general but tonight, yeah, you were that stupid!
“Ah silly me!” Sydney said, drawing the attention of the people she was aiming to towards herself. “How on earth did I forget to introduce you guys?! Mat, Mag; that's Y/N, my close friend! And Y/N/N, these are Mat and Mag!” She said with her beautiful smile.
Mat looked at you under the dim light of the crowded room, the sight of his long, raven hair and hazel eyes, clean shaved face, and plump lips… everything about him looked marvelous to you.
“Hey,” he said, his voice was everything you expected it to be: his accent was distinguishable, and he had a deep yet smooth voice that made you forget about everyone around you. “We're so enchanted to meet you.”
We.
And that one word made you want to die.
The rest of the night was nothing but normal. You tried your best to avoid your feelings, and obviously, them as much as possible. It wasn't like you didn't like Maggie, she was a nice girl. Actually, nice wasn't enough to describe her, she was like a dream. She was beautiful inside and out, no doubt why he was with her.
They were the perfect couple everyone would dream to be.
Then why couldn't you be happy for them? Why did you deep down want to hate her? Was it because you wanted to be her, or you wanted him to be yours?
Being a homewrecker was never on your bucket list, that's why you chose to act like you actually never met with that Canadian and his beautiful girlfriend after Matt's birthday.
Approximately 45 minutes later you finished your make-up and after a little outfit check, you tapped the same button that you had started to end the video.
It has been 3 weeks since your girls’ night with Alicia and Sydney. Even though Alicia keeps teasing you about Mat as much as she can, nothing has happened after that day.
You all have been busy with your own lives and work. Sydney let you know that she hadn’t had time to talk with Mat; you, on the other hand, never wanted to open that topic at all.
“Babes, have you seen my lipliner?” Alicia shouts before entering your en suite. “Oh, shit- were you recording?”
“No, you're good, I've recorded the video and I guess I'm ready?” you look at the girl who is now standing next to you with a long-sleeved mini dress on, checking her make-up in the big mirror.
She eyes you up and down, “You look stunning baby- Hey! That's what I was looking for!” she takes the Charlotte Tilbury lipliner wandering among your make-up products. “No, but I’m serious, you’re serving!” She continues as she applies the pinkish-nude toned lip liner on her lips.
You check your outfit and speak, “Do you think it would be cold? Like cold cold? I’m going to take my black blazer on but I feel like it will be freezing.” You have a mini sleeveless black dress on you, it fits your curves all the way, and you matched it with a black handbag and a pair of knee-high, bubblegum pink, crocodile effect boots.
“Nah, we won’t be out of the club anyway. Uber, club, uber, and home.” she responds with a shrug.
“Girls! Hi!” Zara, the birthday girl, greets you at the entrance with a hug. The club is full of drunk people, spending their time with the people around them.
“Hi, princess!” You respond to the brunette with a hug. After engaging with other people who came here for the same reason as you did, and a few shots, the three of you mix into the dancing crowd.
After almost 2 hours of dancing, taking lots of pictures and some clips for your videos, you decide to go to the bathroom to refresh your make-up. Meanwhile, girls get at a table, well, after hours of dancing your legs screaming for a rest.
Alicia asks her friend, “Have you told him about the plan?”
Okay, maybe the night hasn’t ended yet.
“What? No, I just told him to make sure Barzy would be there, otherwise he'd tell him everything.” she responds while sending a picture to his boyfriend.
“Actually Mat knows that we're trying to set them up, not me though, Sydney and Matt talked with him and she said he was pretty cool. Y/N knows too but she, on the other hand, seems like she doesn't want it a bit like I don't know it's weird.” she takes a sip of her beer and continues, “So she's the one who shouldn't know he'll be there.”
You walk towards them, swinging with loud music. “What are you bitches talking about?!” You sit down next to Zara. “I thought I lost you for a while.” You laughed.
“Pete texted, he and some of his friends are in a pool hall or whatever it's called, somewhere like a bar, you know. Anyways, we're planning to go there,” she looks at the hour lighting from her phone screen and continues, “Like 30 minutes, yeah? Are you sober enough to join or..?” she asks you.
You consider for a few seconds, it's already late and you have nothing to do tomorrow, so why not? Plus you haven't seen Pete because of his game schedules for months- Yes, right guess, he's a hockey player too!
You speak loudly to make yourself audible and respond, “Yeah… Yeah! I just had like 2 or 3 shots with you and this long island,” you lift the cold glass in your hand. “I'm definitely fine to conform to you guys, it's your birthday after all!”
“Okay then, cheers!” Alice cackles and three of you click your glasses.
After you said your goodbyes to whoever you could recognize, you left the club and headed to the ‘pool hall’ where Pete sent Zara to the location.
Not longer than 10 minutes, you arrive at the place and see the 6'2, blond man waiting for you while scrolling through his phone out of the bar.
“Baby!” Zara squeaks as she runs towards her boyfriend. The man looks at her with a huge grin and lifts his girlfriend with a hug. “I missed you, birthday girl.” he says, leaving a little peck on her plump lips.
“Hello, lovers.” you say softly to get their attention. “Look who is here! New York queens! Where the hell have you been? C'mere.” he tugs you two into a hug between his long arms.
You walk away from him and respond. “Actually, where the hell have you been?! My favorite hockey player isn’t in the city anymore!” You fix your hair right between your words. “Don’t believe her, Petey, she’s watching Isles’ games when you’re not around!” Alicia intervenes as you follow Pete inside the bar.
“Ali, I need an extra hand, come help me with the beers- Baby, boys are over there playing pool, you and Y/N join them, we’ll be right behind you.” He says, giving a soft squeeze to his girlfriend’s sides. You and Zara start walking side to side towards the pool tables.
It isn’t as big as the place you came from and considering it’s a Saturday night, it isn’t so crowded. It also doesn’t have blinding lights and pounding music; rather, the dim light around the room makes the bar cozy and more friendly.
“Oh, Y/N,” Zara speaks as she walks next to the guy who’s bending over the pool table and continues while waiting for his move. “Have you met Mat?”
Mat? Is this a joke or-
His deep voice takes you away from your thoughts. “Z, Y/N! Welcome girls, we’ve been looking for you!” he gives Zara a friendly hug.
Yes, it’s the Mat.
You aren’t sure what to surprise: him still remembering your name or his new style- more specifically his hair. Probably Pete told him who you are before you came here so you choose the second option to surprise.
You, of course, stalked him a few times on Instagram but he hasn’t been posting anything there for years, and in the games, well, he has his helmet on! So the hair is definitely the biggest shock for you. He isn’t looking so different though: same beautiful hazel eyes, same pinkish lips, and charming smile; his strong facial structures grew mature, his tall frame looks more muscular and his much shorter hair makes him even hotter.
Just like Sydney told you!
“Mat, hi! You look incredible!” You say, now he’s waiting with his arms open for you to get between them. You fail to see whether he sees you as close as Zara or he’s just tipsy. You wrap your arms around his fit torso, your nose touches his neck, and you smell his rich cologne mixed perfectly with his tan as he wraps his strong arms around your shoulders. You feel like you’re getting high with his intoxicating scent.
Maybe that’s what love feels like… or just alcohol.
“You look at yourself! You look stunning- much prettier with long hair.” You flutter with his compliments. “Classic Gemini man!” Zara teases and joins the couple that you remember as Pete’s teammate and his fiancee.
“Well, you look pretty good with short hair as well.” you step back from him to see his handsome face again. “Yeah? No bald joke from you?” he asks, raising his long eyebrows. You laugh at his question and speak, “What- Oh my gosh! No, I mean it, like, I’d prefer long hair but you’re killing it with that hair too!”
“Okay, then I’ll keep that in mind.” he responds with a grin.
When you look to your left side, you see Alicia and Pete coming over you with 4 big glasses of beer. Alicia squeaks with wide eyes, “You must be Mathew! Hey, I’m Alicia, but you can call me ‘Al’! I’m a big fan of yours!”
“Are you?” Both you and Mat asked in one blow. “Yeah, like every New Yorker.” she responds with an eye roll. “Oh, that’s great, thank you! Nice to meet you, Al.” he smiles and continues, “By the way, no need for ‘Mathew’, just call me ‘Mat’.”
After that little meeting stage, the couple said they just waited to celebrate Zara’s birthday and left. Now, you girls sit at the table, watching Pete and Mat playing pool. You feel like your body has been on fire since the moment you get inside the bar. It might be because of the alcohol running through your blood, the hot atmosphere of the room, or him; you can’t tell.
One thing you learned with years of media experience is that: if you act as if you’re the most confident person in the room, people actually believe that you’re confident and tend to not see your weak sides. Like right now, you try your best to play it cool but none of these people know that all you want to do is cry, scream, or even break things to get this adrenaline out of your body.
While you’re lost in your thoughts, boys join you at the table. “So,” Alicia starts. “How have you guys met? Another New York love story?” You giggle.
“No, we met back in Seattle.” he says with a shrug as if it’s something you already know. “What were you even doing in Seattle? You get me so curious right now, how did you manage to find your bestie in Seattle?” Pete takes a sip of his beer and points to the girl sitting next to him with his thumb. “First of all, my best friend is sitting here, it’s not him.”
Mat cuts him off and says scornfully, “Thank you, brother! I love you, too!”
The tipsy man keeps talking, “We played in Thunderbirds together, we were sharing rooms together, and ten years later, we’re playing in the same state but not together this time!”
“Aww, that’s so romantic!” Alicia says playfully.
“They went to that Taylor Swift concert together!” Both you and Alicia look between two hockey players and try to imagine them singing along to the songs and dancing. “No fucking way!” Except for the boys, you’re all laughing now. Zara shows the pictures from Pete’s phone as they try to explain why they were there.
In the morning, you wake up with a couple of tight arms wrapped around your waist. You don’t know when you called it a night, how you came to your apartment, was last night real or why are you sleeping with your best friend right now!
“Al, please let your grip a bit, you interlaced all my organs to each other.” You groan and try to reach your phone from the nightstand.
It’s 1 pm!
You toss Alicia to the other side of the queen bed and start scrolling through your phone. There are some texts from the girls you hung out with yesterday, some from Sydney to your group chat, some from Zara- and three texts from a number you don’t know.
(xxx) xxx-xxxx
Hi, Y/N! It’s Mat! I got your number from Zara this morning, I hope you won’t mind it 😬
I just wanted to say, I really liked your company last night! I was hoping maybe we can keep this going..? Please let me know
Oh, by the way, I left some aspirin on the kitchen counter, don’t forget to take them!
So, last night wasn’t a dream at all!

well I've had an interesting first week of the year back at work. I managed to get through to my usual doctor this week, which is a bit of a miracle, considering she's always back late jan/early feb each year. she's recommended 3 places for me to ring to follow up on a probable ADHD diagnosis. the best one is one in Sydney, in Bondi.
but to do all of their tests would mean I'd try to jam them into a week, if I could (probs not let's be real), or each time I do one I spend on a hotel room to stay up there, since I just wouldn't feel bothered to the 2 hour drive home after 8 hours of tests. but the Sydney one gives you a brain scan which would be super cool. but also if you managed to get bulk billed, it's $1,200. also they don't focus on meds, they focus on "brain based" and behaviour change stuff.
the other 2 places are local to my area, but you have to ring to find out their prices. but on the other hand, my doc said to leave all this stiff until after I have my colonoscopy that's booked for a couple weeks from now, on the 16th.
work is better since I'm not at a tired low point like I was at the end of last year. my boss is a bit happier that I'm turning up at the office at around 8:50 roughly and set up by 9. but yeah I hate having to cut my pre work bed relax after my bath each morning to 7:15 to get out the door by 8;20. but rn 8:20 is only working bc it's the school holidays so I'm not locked into the mronjng school run traffic and school zones right next to my house (basically). so it means I will have to bother to leave at 8:15 or whatever when school starts back up again on jan 31st.
but yeah. I still haven't handed in any of my unfinished (or unstarted) cadestship assessments; bc I forgot right before we left of chrissy/NY break to ask our outsourced IT guys to set up our VPN access app (it just gives you a code to type in) on my phone to access the work hard drive at home lmao. so I've meant to start this week, but I just haven't.
aside from work, the other interesting thing is that someone from the catholic school I went to for years 7-10 from 2008 til 2011, decided to invite me to a 10 year reunion that someone else from our year group from that school set up on Tuesday on fb for October this year. and I was just so surprised that someone bothered to remember me and invite me.... and I feel kinda touched tbh lol. bc i didn't even graduate with them properly, in a way, in 2013, bc I obvs graduated at the public school that I transferred to. it's so random that someone thought to invite me all these years later.
and I'm also stressing over the event a little. mostly on the level of what to wear to it, obvs lmao. but also, most of these people are successful working in good jobs. or they run their own successful local businesses/take over their parentd businesses.
while, on the other hand. I finish my cadetship in march, and I have no idea whether i'll be kept on where I am or whether I'll be somewhere else or jobless lmao. but anyway. it's going to be so weird seeing anyone from that school again, when half of them have kids and are married now or some have even divorced or split from their partners that they married in our early 20s (or at least that's what I've deduced from their name changes on fb back to their original last name I knew them by in school).
also im bitterly jealous of a few of them because they've bought their first house or have a second house and are using their first as an investment property. like bruh. am I the only one who still hasn't moved out of home yet??? and obvs there are obvs other people renting but still. am i the only one still at home??? I don't want questions about that tbh.
like is it even worth catching up with these people, when I still remember the derision I got from one of the girls from my group from that school, when I ran into her at uni back in 2016??? how she told me that everyone was actually SO GLAD that I'd left bc apparently they were all secretly harbouring embarrassment for my behaviour and my "attention seeking" or whatever the fuck she said to me???? but also part of me hopes that rich boy goes and is happy to see me and I'll get to congratulate him in person on his engagement or perhaps being married by the time this event happens (if it even does lmao). and that's my other thing. could just be an elaborate joke where they do this, and I turn up, but NO ONE is there???? like hello trust issues, aren't you looking very sexy this week.

The Bachelor of Physiotherapy at Western Sydney University
There are a number of pathways and scholarships to study the Bachelor of Physiotherapy at WSU. These include the HSC True Reward Early Offer Program and a sponsored university travel experience.
The degree requires a lot of anatomy, chemistry and biology. It also involves clinical placements in urban public and private health care settings as well as rural health facilities. To know more about Physiotherapy Western Sydney, visit the MVP Rehab Physiotherapy website or call 0450603234.
The Master of Physiotherapy is a two-year, graduate-entry degree that will equip you with the skills you need to work in Australia’s health care sector. It is designed to help you build an outstanding career in musculoskeletal, neurological and orthopaedic physiotherapy. The course also includes a clinical component, where you’ll undertake professional practice placements.
This program has a strong focus on the relationship between therapists and patients. It covers the technical aspects of the job, as well as interpersonal and communication skills. In addition, the program requires students to participate in a range of first aid courses and physiotherapy-related volunteering opportunities.
In the third and fourth years of this degree, you’ll take part in clinical placements. These are a great way to gain practical experience and learn about the profession. They’re also a valuable opportunity to network with other professionals in the field. In addition, the university’s PhysioSoc offers networking events and mentoring programs to students.
Musculoskeletal physiotherapists work with conditions that affect muscles, bones, and joints. These include sprains, injuries, and chronic conditions such as arthritis. They use a variety of techniques to help people reduce pain and improve their movement and function. They also educate patients on how to manage their condition and prevent future problems.
Symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders can vary, but typically they include pain, stiffness, and limited mobility. They may be caused by trauma, repetitive strain injury, poor posture, overuse, or degenerative conditions. Physiotherapists can prescribe treatment including pain medications, manual therapy, exercise, and education.
The musculoskeletal physiotherapy program at Western Sydney University is designed to produce professionals who can truly help their clients and communities lead healthier lives. The program takes a strong evidence-based approach to health sciences teaching, learning, and research. The program combines classroom study with hands-on clinical experience and enables graduates to work in a wide range of healthcare settings. It also provides a strong base for further study.
Neurological physiotherapy helps improve movement in people who have a physical impairment caused by neurological conditions like stroke, multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injury. It includes restoring lost muscle function, increasing movement range and enhancing balance and coordination. It also prevents deterioration of functional ability and reduces pain.
Some of the treatments that may be performed by a physiotherapist include limb positioning and splints, movement training, exercises or activity modification and use of assistive devices. It also involves a comprehensive evaluation of the person’s condition and may incorporate special techniques such as constraint-induced movement therapy or mirror box therapy.
Family members are encouraged to join the sessions as they are crucial to rehabilitation success. This increases morale and keeps clients motivated. It also improves consistency and repetition of the exercises, which is necessary to improve strength and improve mobility and independence.
A sports physiotherapist can help with a wide variety of injuries. These include muscle strains, ligament sprains and tendonitis. They also treat chronic conditions such as arthritis and bursitis. In addition, they can improve weakness and imbalances to increase an athlete’s overall performance.
During your assessment session, the physiotherapist will ask you about your health history and what sports you take part in. This is to assess the severity of your injury and get a better understanding of the type of treatment you will receive. They will also want to know if there are any important events in the near future that you’re hoping to attend. To know more about Physiotherapy Western Sydney, visit the MVP Rehab Physiotherapy website or call 0450603234.
While studying a Bachelor of Physiotherapy at WSU, you’ll be exposed to the faculty culture and a hands-on approach to learning. Learning to let go
The rejection was hard to bear. Receiving it 1 week before my graduation was like a double whammy- it drained any excitement that I even had for it, and the disappointment was amplified by the ‘happy occasion’- hopes, wishes, and dreams of having a partner accompanying for my milestones was dashed. It was tough emotionally, but I am glad that I had emcee job to distract me, and just the company of friends to just be with me, and engage me with something.
I guess God has his own plans in his timing. It is also His mercy and blessing for me to heal with the 2 trips - Korea and Sydney before the onslaught of work. The first was an escapade to just have fun with my friends. And the second was a time-space to process the events, pain and hurt in the comfort of my second home. Grateful for Cheryl my God given sister in Christ who sat through with me through my tears and me opening up my deepest wounds and surprisingly Cai- whose company became a refuge and therapeutic in its own ways. It brought me back to the au trip in 2017 and it is truly by God’s grace that we are still comfortable af with one another since then.
Being back in Sydney is akin to looking for a part of me because it is a second home, somewhere that I can be with myself without the hustles of life.
I felt I did manage to unwind, rest and recharge in the past 2 weeks. Being back in SG feels like I’ve returned to the place of pain and sorrow, where tears flood my days.
I have come to accept the reality that beyond all the challenges or perceived incompatibilities, the most defining difference is the willingness to make the effort. Whether it is trying to know me as a person or build the relationship, he was often passive. He prefers to stick to his perspective of me, instead of staying curious to know me better. I figured that I was also hurt that he did not bother to try to know who I truly am as a person.
Looking back, I felt like I’ve always been striving to keep things going, often feeling inadequate for him.
Thank you Cheryl for pointing out and reinforcing points about why he is not being the right person that God would have wanted. He is just not ready to receive the love that I wanted to give.
I’m learning to let go and submitting the situation and my desires to God. This time round I’m feeling more confident because I feel that the season has truly ended. And I have to grieve over the loss of friendship too, because I feel that this has always been a one sided friendship which I’m not confident would survive if I left it alone.
Human relationships can be so fleeting. Closest friend one day and strangers the next- it is truly heartbreaking. At the same time, it makes me feel grateful for all the people who are still in my life, who make me feel that I can just be myself, yet always affirming me that I am good enough.

Ed Husic takes swipe at Cranbrook as he launches tech challenge
Widening the talent pipeline He paints a vivid picture of a demographic divide within the Australian tech sector. Data shows that funding and job opportunities are flowing unevenly across geography, class and gender, especially at the top of the industry. Recent research from the Tech Council of Australia revealed that of the top 10 regions for tech professionals, the top nine are in Sydney or Melbourne – the other is the ACT. Meanwhile, 74 per cent of workers are men. “We’ve got a lot of work to get done,” Mr Husic said. “We haven’t really called up the widest range of people possible to help get that work done. “We need to widen the talent pipeline.” Atlassian co-founder Scott Farquhar with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the Jobs and Skills Summit in September. James Brickwood A veiled Cranbrook dig Mr Husic’s Cranbrook reference is neat political shorthand for Australia’s elite educational institutions. But it’s also an unmistakable nod towards Atlassian’s co-founders Mike Cannon-Brookes, an alumnus of Cranbrook, and Scott Farquhar, now a vocal parent at the exclusive school. The Atlassian billionaires recently unveiled a two-tier plan to pay workers who work remotely, with those in NSW in Victoria paid more than counterparts in other states. Mr Farquhar justified the controversial move by citing cost of living pressures in those states. But Mr Husic wouldn’t be drawn into whether Atlassian’s payment model would entrench the same divides he’s talking about. “To be fair Scott Farquhar came from Castle Hill and look at [Tesla chairwoman] Robyn Denholm, she was from Milperra. You’ve got people that have demonstrated how the right skills can help transform your career trajectory,” he said. “We’ve got some great work role models, but we need to do more of it.” The Albanese government has begun crafting policies to achieve Mr Husic’s goal. Last month, the government announced the first steps to creating “Start Up Year” – a program that would see 2000 HECS-style loans for final year graduates who want to launch their own businesses. Managing director of Google Australia Mel Silva. Louise Kennerley The minister has also been keen to support companies taking steps to achieve his mission. Last week, Mr Husic appeared alongside Google Australia boss Mel Silva to launch the company’s “career certificates” initiative. Google announced the company had partnered with Coursera to develop IT support, UX design and digital marketing training to people with non-university backgrounds. The company pledged 10,000 free courses to women and people with First Nations backgrounds. During remarks at that event, Mr Husic heaped praise on Ms Silva, who grew up in the same part of western Sydney as him. “When someone from the western suburbs like Mel who has an opportunity to invest in a program like this for people that were like us from the outer suburbs or from underrepresented groups and then they open the door … that is massive.” Source link Originally published at Melbourne News Vine

Thank you, Isentia Content Hub: An open letter to my colleagues.
Eleven days ago, it has exactly been two years since I first started working at Isentia. I remember feeling scared whether I’d belong, and what kind of people I’ll be working with. I remember I kept telling myself “Bawal maattach, Grace, as some alumni have said, when you enter the real world, you’re there to work. Just do your job well and be a team player, but don’t invest your emotions.” But here I am, after two years, with so many beautiful memories with amazing people. I did get attached after all, and it’s worth it. Because I did not only have colleagues, I met a new family.
Tumblr media
This was my open letter to Content Hub, which I hesitated to send at first after writing, because it’s too long. But thankfully, two of my teammates encouraged me to send it because they said what matters is I wrote it from my heart and it’s my farewell message to my friends. (I was one of the employees who got laid off.) It was here that I learned tears are really contagious, because after sending this letter, I received texts saying they shed a tear, too. Perhaps that’s because when I wrote it, I was shedding tears myself. Why do I feel like graduating from high school? Haha! I guess this is how close we have been. So here goes my letter, and pictures of some of the memories we have made. :)
Dear Content Hub,
This August 20, it has been exactly two years since I started working at Isentia. And now, 731 days and 41,283 summaries later, I just finished my last working day as a Broadcast Monitor. Permit me to be cheesy, I just want to thank the amazing people who made the past two years a memorable journey. I apologize in advance for the length of this email, but please know this letter came from my heart.
I'm really blessed that I got to work with you. I did not only have colleagues, I had a family. That is why whenever I reached the office, my update to my parents has always been "Happy place". It meant I arrived safely, I'm at OSMA already. And I know there have been hardships, times heartbreaking news crushed me, or times I went home way past my shift. Yet whenever I was on my home, no matter how tired I got, I just looked forward to facing the next day and working again. If world news were a play, we all get front row seats, binge-watching current events for at least 40 hours a week. It genuinely excited me that our job allows us to literally learn something new every day. But, I don't feel that way all the time; sometimes I just have burnouts and frustrations. So I think the real major reason that kept me going through it all is I had colleagues as supportive as you guys are. Allow me to thank you.
To Sydney Swans, my first team.
Tumblr media
Working with helpful teammates like you added to my motivation as I traveled from LB to Ortigas every day for five months (when I was not yet able to find an apartment in Manila). Thank you for your devotion to Qld Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk. It showed me what client-obsessed looks like, and I committed to following that example. Your compere inside jokes and reactions to news added a lot of fun to our job. Until now, I enjoy backreading the group chat just to see your new musings or memes. Thanks a lot especially to John, Julianne, Zennon, Marco, and Kuya Ronnie.
To Fremantle Dockers, my afternoon shift team for more than a year,
Tumblr media
Thank you for everything; for being supportive colleagues, helping me whenever I struggled, and celebrating with me whenever I improved.
Tumblr media
Kuya Coily’s last day at our team.
Tumblr media
How we help one another, especially during the Christmas dinner just so everyone can go to Sambokojin on time, inspires me. This was our post-Sambo bonding at Greenfield. I am also relieved that you never judged me as “walang pakisama” even though I only drank iced tea or milkshake haha. Others tend to force me to drink, but my friends at Isentia just let me finish all the food. HAHA. I appreciate people who can respect our preferences and differences. And you are witnesses that I don’t need to drink to be drunk. Based on my energy, I am drunk by default. Haha I will miss all these sessions with you and my batchmates!
Tumblr media
I will miss our movie nights and billiard sessions (tho I'm just watching you haha) at the lounge. I wish we played more board games, too.
Tumblr media
Isentia Outing 2019
Thank you so much also for being there for me when I lost my mother, you had my back and that will always mean a lot to me. When my Momi was still alive, she always knew I was working with great people. Thank you to every single one of you especially AJ, Morris, Evann, Aly and Kuya Mel.
Tumblr media
I look forward to a Dockers reunion when this pandemic is over!
And my favorite teammate, Czesar. The best meetings are the ones you participated in. Thank you for all the laughter you gave us.
I also want to thank my friends outside my team, including Tomie, Zendee, LA and Nico from Collingwood Magpies.
Tumblr media
Thank you for the dinner sessions and conversations on life and dreams!
Tumblr media
This was LA’s birthday salubong at Kanto Breakfast :) While the next photo is a “panel discussion” at Goto Believe haha! We talked about the news we monitored, and boi, we went home at almost 5am.
Tumblr media
Tomie, thank you for our never-ending laughter on our way home. Normally, I just want to be quiet and regain energy while traveling, but with you, it's okay to chat all the way to Quiapo.
To my favourite comperes, who will not read this but I feel like thanking anyway because some of you might share love for them: Marc Fennell, Jan Fran, Kanoa Lloyd, Jules Schiller, Sonya Feldhoff, Anna Vidot, Dave Sutherland, Tamara Oudyn, Sammy J, Paul Barry, Jeremy Corbett, David Speers, Leigh Sales and my inspiration Jesse Mulligan. Thank you because I learned so much about the world and about life from you. I will miss blogging about your stories and reacting to your insights.
To the leaders who managed me and/or accommodated my concerns,
Tumblr media
This is my former TL, Kuya Coily :)
TL Coily, TL Angel, TL Rem, TL Nico, TL Nic, TL Jonna, TL Geoff, TL Alni, and Sup Mitch. Thank you for all your help! Thank you for the times you inspired me and my colleagues to grow as well as the times you coached me, gave constructive feedback, and helped me overcome my weaknesses so I can continuously improve.
To our Trainer Rachel, who we can consider as Content Hub's matriarch,
Tumblr media
thank you so much because you patiently equipped every single one of us before we transitioned to live operations. To OM Dean, thank you for your feedback and praise during my regularisation.
And most of all, to Western Borlogs fam, my home for two years, I don't even know how to thank you enough.
Tumblr media
I'm grateful you've been my batchmates at our training--and for everything after that.

Tumblr media
Sambokojin, Christmas dinner 2019
Dear Borlogs, thank you for all the memories, endless laughter, samgyup sessions (a regular segment haha), Friday nights, and times we comforted each other when some of us are facing a hard time. Thank you also for comforting me and my family when you and B visited the wake of my Momi. She has always heard about you (and I'm happy she met some of you) when she was still alive. Thank you for being such a great sounding board, a safe space where we can be vulnerable and strong at the same time. Also, I've never been a milk tea person until I met you guys, so thanks for that, too. My BM experience would not be the same without you. Naz, Janelle, Joey, Patty, Billie, Lou, Aiona, Jai, Nee, Mau, C, Ady, Sarah. Thank you, sists!!
If you've read until here, thank you for bearing with my lengthy cheesy, farewell note to Content Hub. I attached some photos that captured a few of the memories I spent with you, as well as some jokes I've randomly thought about while monitoring. I was reserving them for Christmas Party or something, but anyway, here they are. I am confident they will make you cringe.
So there, I will miss you and I appreciate you always. I will not forget the memories we've made along the way. Thank you for everything, Isentia Content Hub! God bless you all and stay safe.
Arrivederci :)
Always,
Grace / Mariel

Tequila Sunrise Part II
Previous Part: Part I
Next Part: Part III
Logan x MC
Author’s Note: Part II! Thanks for the warm reception to this story. Hope you guys like this part too, and let me know if you’d like to be added to the tag list for future parts!
Summary: 10 years have passed since Logan and Ellie last saw each other. But fate has brought them back together in Mexico.
Word Count: 1710
Tumblr media
Ellie wakes up with a pounding headache, and the need to empty her bladder after all the alcohol she had consumed earlier in the evening. She throws off the thin cover, which was unnecessary in the Mexican heat, and stumbles to where she assumes the bathroom is. She’s so focused on finding a bathroom that she doesn’t immediately worry about where she is or why she just woke up in an unfamiliar bed.
After using the restroom and washing her hands, she sleepily shuffles back into the bed. Ellie is just starting to doze off when the events of the night flood back to her. Dinner with Riya and her good friends from Langston, them desperately trying to cheer her up. Arriving at the bar, dancing with a handsome Matt Rodriguez look-a-like, drinking so many Tequila Sunsets that she lost track of exactly how many she consumed, Logan…. Her eyes shoot open and she sits up in the bed. Logan.
She’s in Logan’s house. In Logan’s bed. She looks around the small room, Logan is nowhere in sight. She does spot a glass of water and what looks like the Mexican equivalent of Advil on the nightstand. She smiles, isn’t he thoughtful.
She swallows the pills and drinks the water, immediately feeling better. She’s relieved she still has her wristlet, with her phone and all her money. She checks the time on her phone, 2:30 AM. There are several worried texts from her friends, and she quickly responds to let them know she’s fine, and she’ll see them at brunch in the morning. She tosses her things onto the nightstand, standing from the bed and stretching.
She’s still in her tight sequined gold clubbing dress. Logan obviously didn’t feel comfortable changing her into something more sleep appropriate, although he had removed her heels and left them near the nightstand. She manages to get the zipper after some difficulty, allowing the dress to fall to the floor. She rifles through his dresser, throwing on one of his plain white t shirts. She goes back into his bathroom to scrub her now smudged makeup from her face. She scrutinizes her bare faced look in the mirror. Being cheated on has really messed with her confidence. She decides she looks fine. Besides, she remembers waking up in Logan’s arms for the first time after leaving her Dad’s and him telling her that she looked beautiful with no make-up, that she didn’t need it.
She leaves the bedroom and finds herself in an under-furnished living room, a small kitchen past a half wall to her right. She checks the couch, but Logan isn’t there either. She frowns, giving the room another once over to make sure she hasn’t overlooked him.
She walks outside to the porch, surprised to see it’s literally right on the beach. She wonders if this hut was expensive as she leans on the wood railing and watches the waves crash for a moment. She finally finds Logan when he lets out a soft snore behind her. He’s asleep in a hammock, swaying softly in the night breeze.
He looks so relaxed when he sleeps. Normally, there’s a hard edge to him beneath his charm. An edge that probably comes from the time spent bouncing between foster homes, looking out for himself from a young age, being dealt a shitty hand in life and always expecting something bad to be right around the corner during any moment of fleeting happiness. But right now, he just looks so peaceful. She gently combs her fingers through his hair, pushing stray stands out of his face. Ellie is surprised by the tears welling up in her eyes. But God, she’s missed him.
The first few months after he left were the hardest. It took her awhile to realize that he really wasn’t going to come looking for her, even though he told her he wouldn’t, that he couldn’t. Eventually she started dating, but she compared everyone to him and they never lived up. Eventually, she had realized she was just going to have to settle, that she’d never have who she really wanted. But fate had brought them back together. What were the chances that they would end up in the same shitty bar in Mexico at the same time? That had to mean something. Even he couldn’t think they really were supposed to stay apart after this.
She carefully climbs into the hammock with him, trying not to roll them both onto the floor. Logan stirs as she jostles him. She curls into his side, resting her head on his chest. He stiffens for a moment, seeming like he’s at war with himself. Eventually, he gives in and curls one arm around her. “How do you feel?” He asks.
“Hungover. My alcohol tolerance is clearly way down from my college days.”
He laughs. “Those girly drinks are dangerous. You should stick to the hard stuff.”
“Why are you out here? We could have shared the bed.” She suggests.
“I don’t think that would have been a very good idea. You were really handsy. And really drunk. But despite all your very explicit talk about what we’d be doing when we got here on the way home, you passed out almost immediately once your head hit the pillow.” He teases.
Ellie can’t help but blush as she vaguely remembers some of the things she had said. “Well, the night is still young.” She responds, running her hand up his thigh sensually.
She feels him gulp and he stops her hand before she can reach her destination. “Ellie, we shouldn’t.” He chokes out.
Ellie sits up in the hammock, irritated with him now. “Why Logan? Why are you fighting this? What were the chances we were ever going to see each other again after everything that happened in LA? Don’t you think that means something?”
“Ellie-“ He tries to interject, but she interrupts.
“I mean, I was just really starting to come to terms with never seeing you again. After ten years, I guess I realized you really weren’t coming back for me. Maybe it didn’t mean as much to you as it did to me. Because I would have found you, if the circumstances were reversed. I mean, I don’t even know your last name. But you could have easily looked me up at any time, whenever you wanted to. But you just didn’t. You didn’t care. You must not have hurt like I did.” She furiously wipes her eyes, making to stand from the hammock.
Logan grips her wrist, keeping her in place. “That’s really what you think? That I stayed away because I don’t care about you?”
She refuses to answer, tugging on her wrist to free herself but he doesn’t release her. “Let go Logan.” She says.
He doesn’t. “I stayed away as long as I did because I love you.”
He said love, not loved, she notes, raising her watery eyes to look at him. He releases her wrist, using his now free hand to wipe the tears that have started to fall from her eyes.
“And I did come back for you. Once.” He admits.
Her eyes widen in shock as he continues. “When you graduated from Langston, I was there. After LA, I went to Miami, then Ohio, then Arizona, and then Dallas, but the FBI wasn’t giving up. They kept getting closer, asking my neighbors questions. I realized I had to leave the country. I knew you were about to graduate. I…I wanted to see if you would come with me. I knew it was selfish, and stupid, but I guess I jut figured that since you got to go to Langston like you always wanted….” He gently pulls her to his chest, running a hand through her hair. “maybe it was my turn to finally have what I wanted.”
“You were at my graduation? Why didn’t you come talk to me?” Ellie questions, hugging him back, trying to comfort him.
“I was going to. I brought flowers, I had two tickets to Australia, I’d already started looking up jobs in your field in Sydney. But then I saw you, with your Dad, and your friends, celebrating. You looked so happy Ellie.” He pauses, absentmindedly tracing spirals on her bare thigh with the hand that’s not in her hair. “And there was a guy with you. Your boyfriend, I concluded when you kissed him.” Ellie thinks back to her college boyfriend, Grant. She had thought they were serious, but he ended up breaking up with her a week after graduation.
Logan continues. “I used to check your social media pages periodically, before you deleted them all basically right after that actually. I hadn’t seen anything about a boyfriend. I wasn’t expecting it. And I know I told you that you would, and should, love someone else, but it still hurt. And I realized that I was right back then. That I had to never see you again because you deserve so much better than me and this life.”
Ellie shakes her head. “You don’t get to decide what I deserve Logan.” She gently pushes him back into a reclined position in the hammock, maneuvering so she’s lying on top of him. The hammock sways slightly as their lips connect.
The kiss is hungry, ten years of longing poured into it. He cups her cheek, angling his head to deepen the kiss. He pulls away, but barely. Her eyes have closed, hands fisting in his shirt, and she feels him smile against her lips. “You taste like Tequila Sunrise.” He mumbles, before kissing her again.
As their kisses become more heated and hands start to wander under clothing, they lean too far to the left and almost topple the hammock. Logan manages to correct them by rolling her off of him and onto her right side. The hammock swings precariously, but they stay upright.
Ellie hops off of the hammock, offering Logan a hand to help him up. “Let’s take this inside.” She suggests.
Logan smirks. “Am I getting all those explicit things you promised me?”
She tugs him toward his bedroom. “Only if you’re good.”

What does your character look like at the 10 year reunion? (FC choice goes here)
Caity Lotz
How old is your character now?
Rebekah is currently 31 years old, will be turning 32 on January 1st!
Where has your character been living since graduation?
Rebekah has jumped around a lot since graduation. She did have her own place until she was evicted by her landlord for not giving him what he wants (if you know what I mean). She then began jumping around from couch to couch until Noah had found out, in which then he insisted that she go live with him
How did they end up there?
She hasn’t had the best time due to her heroin addiction. And because of this, she lost nearly everything. Her disgraceful landlord had threatened that if she tried taking him to court to appeal the eviction, he would then call the police to nail her on the drugs she had been keeping. Because of this, she had been jumping around place to place, never having enough money to have a place of her own. Although she tried her best to keep it from Noah in order to prevent him from worrying, he still managed to find out. Since then, she’s been living with Noah and taking part in his extravagant life.
What job does your character currently have?
Although Rebekah studied criminology and forensics, she currently does not have a job in this field. She does personal training at a couple of gyms and life coaching online - doing what she loves by working out, but also helping those who struggle with mental health and substance abuse. However, a bulk of her money (actually a lot of it since she makes hella money) comes from her being an escort.
Is this the job they always dreamed of having? If not, what stopped them from achieving their dream career?
This is definitely not the job they always dreamed of having. Rebekah dreamed of being director of crime scene investigation for a local police department; her dreams even went as far as possibly working for the FBI. Throughout the years, her life has been through many ups and downs, that she could barely keep up. She knows that nobody would hire her in this field due to her drug problem.
Is your character currently in a relationship?
Realistically, no. Rebekah and Arden broke up shortly after graduation. The two weren’t necessarily ready for long distance, and even if they were, they knew that it wouldn’t have worked out due to Rebekah’s constant spiraling. She still sees Arden whenever her and Noah make a pit stop to Seattle, which always leads to them getting into bed together. They also try to talk as much as possible. Rebekah is still madly in love with Arden, although the other woman may or may not know that.
However, everyone in the public eye is convinced that her and Noah are together. Noah constantly showers Rebekah with the nicest of things, and takes her to all of his red carpet events to show her off. Yet, their relationship is strictly platonic at home.
What’s this relationship like?
Her relationship with Arden is a bit confusing, as always. She’s still in love with Arden, and constantly finds herself missing her whenever she’s not around. However, she hasn’t been sure recently how the other feels.
Her relationship with Noah has remained the same for years. Noah is truly her best friend, and she genuinely doesn’t know where she would be, without him. He was one who helped her get clean, and for that she owes him everything. The two live together, and sleep together constantly. But they also sleep with other people. That being said, these two are getting all the perks of being in a relationship without actually being in one. Either way, Rebekah holds deep love for Noah and would do absolutely anything for him. Their relationship is strictly platonic.
Does your character have kids?
LOL WHAT ARE THOOOOOOOSE
What big life events has your character experienced since graduation?
Rebekah ended up in the hospital due to a drug overdose and suicide ideation. She was in the hospital for two weeks, and this resulted in her going to rehab. Those who were close to Rebekah at the time are the only people who know about the situation. She constantly feels guilty about putting them through the pain of even having to contemplate a life without her.
Her father also passed away shortly after her and Arden broke up. He died from a massive heart attack, and it was a sudden, unexpected death. This left her completely heart broken, and estranged from her stepmother and stepsister, Sydney.
Who has your character kept in touch with since graduation?
Rebekah has kept in contact with Noah, who is both her housemate and best friend; Arden, her ex-girlfriend who she still has deep feelings for; Madison, who is also one of her best friends that she cares for deeply; Allison, who she currently has a small fling with, but it’s nothing serious; Katherine, someone she still constantly sleeps with; Sydney, her stepsister; Lola, who her and Noah see quite often due to them also still living in Cali; and Ollie, who Rebekah adores and sees often.

In 1948, uncle, as a young boy,  had listened to the running commentary of Mahatma Gandhi’s funeral procession. Back then in Jaffna nobody had a radio at home,  so the school principal hired one for the kids to be able to listen to Gandhi’s tributes. Uncle said that he and many of the children cried. Uncle was so amazed at how something happening in a distant land could move people in his village in Chavakacheri.  In his wonderment at how this was possible,  his dream to one day become a radio announcer was born.  Sri Lanka started broadcasting in 1923, three years after Europe started the BBC. The transmitter was built using equipment from a captured German submarine. Colombo Radio, later known as Radio Ceylon, started broadcasting in English first and later added Sinhhalese and Tamil . As the station’s popularity grew in India,  Hindi was introduced, which also catered  for the Hindi-speaking businessmen in Colombo. While uncle was studying at Jaffna Central college, he stayed in a hostel and would listen to the 9pm All India Radio news on the public radio installed in Subramanian Park while the other students would be engrossed in their studies. At the age of 21,  uncle started working in Colombo,  having skipped his university entrance exam to earn money. There he found himself working in the office next to Radio Ceylon.  One of his colleagues was a radio drama artist and invited uncle to join him. Uncle fell in love with the stage and soon became popular for his theatrical talents.  When a vacancy opened up for a news reader, he applied and was appointed to the job.  By the fifties, radio had become a big craze in Jaffna, but very few people could afford a radio and our parents also didn’t want us to get distracted by listening to film songs and dramas.   Even if we could afford a radio,  my family didn’t have electricity. We had a simple life and education was our main focus. Uncle’s family also didn’t have electricity and had to go to a neighbour's house to listen to his broadcasts.  While at Radio Ceylon, he was seconded for a ministerial post as press officer with the option of returning to his job as a news announcer when he wished to do so.
His duties included reading the papers and giving the minister a summary of daily events as well as interpreting speeches from Sinhala to English or Tamil. He also accompanied different Sinhalese ministers on their trips, bearing witness to their acts incitement of discrimination against the Tamils. He would often come home and tell me how sad he felt. His next job was as a simultaneous interpreter in parliament, a service provided for the Members of Parliament . Most of the Members spoke only Sinhalese or English and uncle worked as the Tamil translator.
Because parliament only sat for a few days a year, uncle had a lot of free time, which he filled by voicing jingles for advertising companies and performing in radio plays .
The stage was like a second home for him. He had so much confidence in all three languages. In 1969, he and another interpreter were selected to do the simultaneous interpreting for the Apollo 11 moon landing on July 20.  These Sinhalese and Tamil interpretations, which were done non stop for three days,  were broadcast by Radio Ceylon all around the country and region, capturing that awe-inspiring moment in history.  The US Embassy in Colombo trained the team, which included Tamil and Sinhala scientists, for about a week, so that they were familiar with the technical terms. They also had to go through a simulated landing. Uncle found the American English difficult, but managed to successfully complete the task. Though Sinhala chauvinism escalated  well before the eighties, we never imagined  it would eventuate in the pogroms and violence that followed, culminating in the atrocities of 2009.
When the Sinhala Only Bill was passed in 56, uncle had to read it out as news on Radio Ceylon and had to cover stories of its implementation. Uncle was also a news reader during the 58 ethnic riots and the 76 and 78 pogroms.
Uncle's time at Radio Ceylon, his time in parliament and our years in India, the UK and Australia as a refugee during which time he yearned to return to our country of birth, had a profound effect on him. His resulting grief stayed with him right until his last days in Australia. In 1959, I graduated with a BA in Arts from Peradeniya University. My family never thought I would get a place in the university, as it was a difficult entrance exam. In those days, the  results were announced in the English newspapers. But in our home, we only read Tamil newspapers. My father's friend saw the results and sent the paper to our home, with my name underlined, through another friend. I also had the option of entering a Teachers Training College to study teacher training, which required a less competitive mark than university studies. My school principal, the late Miss Thambiah, however encouraged me to enrol in university and promised me that I would have a job back at our school, Vembadi Girls’ High School, when I had finished my degree.
In Jaffna, education was mainly segregated into male and female schools. In certain schools, at the higher levels there was mixed education. So university was where I first met men, outside my immediate family. It was also the first time I met Sinhalese students. There were about fifty Tamil students and two or three hundred Sinhalese students. We enjoyed  our single rooms and ate in a dining hall with fork and spoon. We were served a lot of beef and so I became a vegetarian. University is where I tasted cheese for the first time. Our education was free, and our living expenses were minimal. Those of us who remember the days of no ethnic divide,  will remember university as a wonderful experience. Those days we had the best of everything in Sri Lanka - free education and free medical services. Everything was good, till the politicians  of the majority community poisoned the minds of the  people against the minorities living in the country. I think that now it's too late for change. The poison has sunk in too deep.   After my studies, I returned to Jaffna and started teaching at my high school. I was so happy and I had many dreams of helping my siblings, who were excelling in their studies. But a marriage proposal to uncle came my way in 1961 and though I had a lot of ambitions and wasn’t keen on it, it was my parents wish and so I obliged.  After our wedding, I joined uncle in Colombo where we had a comfortable life, like most middle class families. I got a job at the Muslim Ladies College in  Bambalapitya Colombo. Teaching in a multicultural environment was another unforgettable experience.  Our move to Chennai in 1980 was not my decision and nor was I in favour of it. Our only daughter Subhadra had just sat for her OL exam and was keen to continue her bharathanatyam studies, while we wanted her to attend university. It came as a rude shock when one morning in January 1980  uncle asked me to sign my retirement papers. He explained there was an option for lady teachers to retire after twenty years of service, which i had just completed, and I could avail myself of that facility. He said I could go to Chennai to educate  Subhadra in the Fine Arts (music and dance), while at the same time help her to get a degree in Arts/Science. My school principal refused to endorse the papers as  I was in the process of  being appointed as  principal of the newly built  Colombo Hindu Ladies College. I was appalled!  Who would throw away everything so good? I was in a dilemma but my husband solved it for me. He said “a decision has been made, let us not go back on it”. He said that Tamils couldn’t live in Sri Lanka in peace anymore and that political unrest was  simmering.  He said that he no longer wanted to live like a fugitive in his country of birth ‘his தாய் நாடு’ and that after translating the venomous speeches of the Sinhalese Members in parliament, he had spent many years of sleepless nights. He said that at least in Tamil Nadu we would feel a sense of familiarity and could continue to be part of the Tamil culture and language.  He reminded me that we had to seek refuge in a Muslim friend’s house during the 1977 pogrom and that our daughter had no chance of entering university with the government’s standardisation policy which penalised Tamil students. So in Jan 1980 I retired and we left for Madras, our home for the next twenty years. There were only three other Tamil families from Sri Lanka who had settled down in Chennai after the first pogrom in 1958 and they all welcomed us graciously. Mr and Mrs Sivapathasundaram had made Adyar their home, the suburb which would become our home too.  Mr Sivapathasundaram  was a  renowned  broadcaster at Radio Ceylon and a popular Tamil writer on par with Indian writers.  He was the one who gave the name Thamilosai to BBC Tamil Radio. We realised theirs was a life of struggle even after spending nearly three decades in Tamil Nadu. Our years in Chennai were also tough, and those who came to visit us were shocked to see how we were living in a single room annex. In 1982, we received a surprise phone call from the BBC asking uncle if he would come and work as the Tamil radio producer for one year, while  Mr Shankaramoorthy, the then producer, took one year of medical leave.  In uncle’s previous trips to the UK he had acted in some of the BCC Thamilosai’s radio dramas and so they were familiar with his talents.  Subha had entered Stella Marie’s College, so we put her in the college hostel and set off on our year long UK adventure.   We could have stayed on after our contract was over by taking part in radio programmes, however uncle said that he wanted to listen to carnatic music and hear Tamil in his ears - காதிலே தமிழும் பாட்டும் கேட்கவேணும் ! So after our stay in the UK was over, we flew straight to Colombo, with the hope of settling back there.  After about 10 days of visiting our families  in Jaffna, uncle, again said that he felt something bad was going to happen and he wanted to get back to Chennai.  I again didn’t want to leave. I missed our family and they missed us.  We had nobody in Chennai.  Uncle however insisted that we had to return to see our daughter Subha and once again said “I don’t want to be a second class citizen in my own country”. We arrived back in Chennai in May 1983. In July when the pogrom against the Tamils started in Colombo, those who had money, got on planes and arrived at our doorstep. Over the following six months, at least a hundred Tamils made their way to our home straight from the airport.  We helped them find temporary accommodation to begin with, then a  home and a school for their children. We became local guardians to hundreds of children, as this was a government requirement. There were number of challenges we faced as guardians - illness - exam failures - two missing students - but we were thankful we could help them.  Those who could afford to sent their children to other foreign countries. Thanks to the BBC, we had a telephone, which became so useful for the many Eelam Tamils who would line up outside and inside our home to use it. One night, we had more than 20 people sleep in our tiny annex. Those nights were tough, but what were we to do? Uncle, who looked to life’s positives, would often tell us that he was grateful that we got out in time and didn’t have to go through the trauma of watching our people being massacred. He was even more thankful that we were in a position to be able to help those that did escape.  After hearing of the massacres and the burnings of the 83 pogrom, the people of Tamll Nadu became sympathetic to our cause and opened up their homes for rent. MGR, was the Chief Minister at the time, and said all Eelam Tamils could be accepted into schools in Tamil Nadu. For those who didn’t have money and escaped the island by boat, they were kept in refugee camps in Tamil Nadu, and their plight was and still is an incredibly sad one. Many are still there with very little protection or hope for a better future. We were the lucky few and though we never returned to live in our country, we have a lot to be thankful for.  In the years that followed, uncle became BCC’s Thamilosai correspondent for Tamilnadu, which allowed us to continue living in the India and provided us with a permanent income. Thanks To BBC, we were also able to get a visa to visit our daughter in Australia.  After uncle passed away in Australia after a tragic accident in 2001, I did not want to go back to India and all my family members had left Sri Lanka by then. I stayed on with my daughter's family as a refugee for 12 long years. It was a period of struggle and great uncertainty, thanks to the Australian government.  I was finally granted Australian Citizenship in 2017.  END In 1999 Dr Maunaguru, a close friend, turned audio recordings by uncle about his life into a book titled ‘Mana Osai -Reminiscences of a Broadcaster‘.  Uncle was not keen on the book idea, but he agreed on one condition that the book when published  would be distributed free - he said everyone has a story to tell so it's not fair to make money off it.  Aunty’s grandson Senthan is now also a radio broadcaster and co-hosts the popular podcast Stuck in Between.

OzTREKK student receives University of Sydney Law School Dean’s Scholarship
Yes, it’s true. An OzTREKK student received the University of Sydney Law School Dean’s Scholarship!
Studying internationally can be an expensive endeavor, so scholarships can certainly help to make the dream a more realistic option. Though scholarships are not always available, when they are, we encourage students to apply because it could literally pay off!
Just look at Andrew. He’s the recipient of the University of Sydney Law School Dean’s Scholarship! Andrew commenced the Juris Doctor program at the University of Sydney in February 2021, but he applied for this scholarship in late 2020. We chatted with both Andrew and the University of Sydney to learn more about what made him want to apply for the scholarship and what he thinks set his application apart!
The Scholarship The University of Sydney Law School Dean’s Scholarship is a scholarship that assists high-performing international students looking to commence the Juris Doctor or Master of Laws at the University of Sydney Law School. The scholarship provides full tuition coverage for the duration of the degree and allows students to be mentored by the Dean.
Sydney Law School Dean Simon Bronitt notes, “Early in my deanship I committed to increase support for international students with a new Dean’s Scholarship program. Recognizing long-established Australian-North American links in the law, our Dean’s Scholars not only gain unparalleled opportunities in study and co-curricular engagement, they join a growing global alumni network of #inspiringlegalminds at Sydney Law School!”
Andrew’s Experience and Advice on the Scholarship
What made you want to apply for the Sydney scholarship? There were many reasons for my application for the Dean’s Scholarship. First, the University of Sydney is a highly respected and acclaimed university. Not only does it rank very impressively on the world stage, but it is the number one school for graduate employability in Australia, something important to keep in mind if you plan on staying in the country post-graduation.
Second, it was a matter of financial need, which I made clear in my scholarship essay. I let the reader know that although I am extremely passionate about the law, there is no way I could attend law school without financial assistance. Law school is expensive regardless of what country you choose to study in, and I was lucky that I was awarded the scholarship and didn’t have to continue working in the finance industry for years to come just to save up money.
The third reason for my application was the city itself. I’ve always wanted to live in an important “global” city, and Sydney is just that. Plus, the beaches, gardens, and warm weather are nice. Lastly, the University of Sydney Law School offers an enormous range of different law topics for study and given my career aspirations it made sense for me to choose such an institution.
When did you start and submit your Sydney scholarship application? You need to start early, but you don’t actually have to submit the application until the deadline. I gave myself about a month to write the essay but probably only spent 20 hours or so on it. It’s important to give yourself time to review your writing and make changes over a period of time so you don’t fall victim to your own tunnel vision. The university website will have more details on the deadline and how many words or pages the scholarship application should be.
What did you include as part of the application? Any recommendations on what you think set your application apart? Surprisingly, to be awarded this life-altering scholarship, all an applicant needs to do is write an essay. Surely, the applicants in this pool are of extreme distinction but if you can make the case for yourself on why you deserve the scholarship then the decision committee will award you it. I attested to my interest in global law and how my residence in Europe prior to moving to Canada sparked my interest in how law around the world works. The point is to talk to what you’re passionate about and not try to snag ideas from online websites. The essay is deeply personal, and so you should write it in such a way.
It’s true that your vernacular needs to be of a certain distinction, but this isn’t a purely academic essay. Make sure there are no spelling mistakes but focus the majority of your time on laying out exactly what the awarding of the scholarship would mean to you. It helps to be able to organize your essay in a way that you can hit home all the points you want. I chose to proceed in a chronological order, touching on important events throughout my life that solidified my passion for law.
It’s also important to understand the university. Sydney Law School has various clinics for social justice or other issues, so if you can tie details of the school into your application, the readers will see that you’ve taken the time to do your research and give proper thought to your application.
How were you notified that you received the scholarship?  I was notified of my successful application via email. When submitting your application, you are required to list your preferred email address. In that email, which I received while I was sitting at my cubicle at work, is also attached an official university document outlining the details of the scholarship and your obligations under it should you choose to accept that scholarship. It also tells you exactly what you need to do to confirm your acceptance. Obviously, I got out of my chair, left work to go home and read the document in full and celebrated like never before.
How did it feel to be the recipient of the scholarship? It felt like a dream. Even now, months after being awarded the scholarship at the start of December 2020, I still feel euphoric. I did have to deal with a bit of Imposter Syndrome, but the excitement of my friends and family who constantly reminded me of my deservingness quickly quashed that. Like I just mentioned, without the scholarship, law school would have been completely out of reach for me both in Canada and abroad. The scholarship has instilled me with an intense desire to live up to the expectations that are bestowed upon me.
What elements were part of the scholarship? Besides covering the full cost of tuition, the Dean’s Scholarship also reimbursed me for my textbooks and provided me with a direct communication channel to the Dean of Sydney Law School. Textbook costs can be substantial ($1,000+ per semester) so this was a very welcomed perk. More importantly though, I was personally congratulated by the Dean on a Zoom call where I was told what to expect in law school. I’m confident that having the Dean’s support throughout my degree and afterwards will benefit me superbly. In addition, I’m in regular contact with the previous year’s Dean Scholar and she has provided me with some invaluable tips to survive the first year of law school.
How are you finding the program so far? So far, the program is incredible. I’ve always had a passion for law and understanding the world around me, and the University of Sydney Law School provides ample opportunity for students to gain vast amounts of knowledge, starting from day one. At the start of the program, the university languidly introduces students to the topics they will be studying in an effort to allow students to figure out how they study best and how they should set up their schedules. But it seems that the intensity of the program is turned up a notch bit by bit every day. While I do have to keep up with all my readings every day, the seminar manager (a tutor who provides extra help and commentary outside of lectures) makes sure that everyone is on track to being the best that they can be.
Is the program set-up what you expected? I graduated with a commerce degree in 2019 and thus missed out on the “Zoom University” rite of passage that so many recent graduates have been through. I was nervous to start law school online, but I was put at ease when I realized that the University of Sydney has the resources and talent to foster an incredible online learning environment. Much of your time in law school is spent reading cases, articles, and textbooks on your own time anyway. However, learning the law is very different from learning any other topic you might have studied in undergrad.
In any case, the university does not expect students have prior knowledge of the law and does a great job at preparing students for their studies. I was very happy to find that the first few weeks of school are spent focusing on the foundations of studying law so that students feel confident in their reading and writing abilities. Law school will always seem scary and unconquerable, but the plethora of supports available make it more manageable. The program meets my expectations in terms of rigour, but the important thing is to go into it with an open mind and trust the process.
Any final advice about scholarships? Envision and manifest winning the scholarship. It seems impossible that such a thing will happen to you when you first start writing the application, but someone’s gotta get it. If you approach it with a winning attitude, there’s a greater chance that you’ll actually win.
