15.05.2022.

The coffee shop I visited a few days ago hung a bike up on the wall as decor. Which, ok. A choice.

Haven't been very active here lately, mostly because I've not had much in the "study" realm to share. My classes this term don't lend themselves well to physical notes, and what notes I do have are so specific in content that you could probably track me down with minimal effort. Curse of graduate school; everything gets so niche. So my camera roll is filled with images from my non-academic life instead, like this bike on the wall, which I tend to prefer sharing more on my instagram. This blog feels like a visual diary of my academic life rather than my personal one, and I think I'll keep it that way. Something nice about being able to put bits of myself into different boxes so that when I step back and view it I get to see the whole picture. Bit like pointillism; looks very different in detail but no less beautiful, just different.

Hey you. You know you should be doing The Thing. I don't want to do The Thing, either. But we can sit down and do it for 2 minutes together. Then we can do it for 5 minutes. Then 10. And so on and so forth until it is done. I'll be coming back to reiterate this.

To whoever needs to hear it: it does not have to be perfect. It does not have to be world altering. It just needs to be done. And I'll sit with you while you do The Thing.

This weekend was sooo beautiful. I was not thrilled about spending most of today studying, but fortunately I was able to recharge yesterday by hiking and chilling by the pool. The grind of the semester is definitely beginning, so I'm trying to make time for + savor rest and engaging with my passions.

2024.04.10 | Day 81/100 days of productivity

Slept in today and that extra sleep seems to have made all the difference to my mood and energy levels (who knew!). I'm hoping to get done with my decision analysis final essay either today or tomorrow so I can edit and move on to my research proposal for qualitative methods (and eventually get back to the research - which I actually enjoy (no offence to my professors)).

Today's goals:

Drink water (2/3)

Finish readings for tomorrow

Finish first draft of decision analysis final essay

Have a good formal dinner :)

Do at least 1 load of laundry

Get enough sleep

wednesday, march 13th 2024

i think one of the best things to come out of my PhD (so far) is that i am learning to embrace finitude, and focusing more on the aspects of "what did i learn from this" instead of dwelling on getting a great grade. let me explain.

let's say i was taking this intro to neural engineering class in undergrad, where these hard as hell MATLAB assignments were due like once a month. i would be literally shitting a brick about trying to get it right, staying up late and compromising my health for the assignment, and then stressing like crazy over the grade. for it to all, subsequently and eventually, end up being fine and not the end of the world.

now, as a 1st year PhD student, in this exact position of having a hard as hell assignment that i kind of just figured out as i go, i'm not even trippin. like, i'm probably going to get half credit and i'm genuinely fine with that. why? because I: 1) embraced finitude of knowing that it's just not going to get done and 2) am celebrating the fact that I even learned the concepts to get half credit.

this...is a big mental shift that i'm really trying to cherish, because it took soooo long for me to get here. i also realize that i'm able to have this change in attitude now because undergrad is over, and for a PhD program, grades don't really matter as long as you meet the requirements to stay in your program. in undergrad, you're aiming for good grades because you want to have access to the next goal (job, internship, or grad school). but my god, is this such a RELIEVING mindset shift.

04.03.24// had been really busy lately, but i'm making a progress on my phd research which is great!! also, i've finished the ninth house yesterday (it was my third attempt actually) and i absolutely loved it - guess once you hit that 50 pages mark, you just can't put that thing down!
