y'know how they say an academic writing sample can be something like an undergrad thesis or journal article? but if a journal article has many authors, how do they know which part you contributed to? or do they just want the part of the article you wrote for the sample? sadly i don't have the option to do an undergrad thesis, so i won't have something that was purely/mostly my own to give...

7 years ago I was studying abroad in Canada. When I came back home, I decided to get a bachelor's degree in psychology and then pursue a master's degree in Canada. I spent 5 years in college working my ass off, graduated with GPA of 9.4, an article and a book chapter published, and a great resumé. Somewhere along this path I got cold feet, and put the master's plan on hold.
5 years ago I met the love of my life (who is now my husband). He helped me find the courage I had lost on my way here. I have applied to 9 graduate programs across Canada, and haven't heard back from any universities yet. The wait is killing me.
My past self would be proud. I still do not believe I will get accepted, but at least I tried. Right?

Finances are hard to talk about so give some thought on how to ask this professionally. You absolutely do have the right to ask more broadly how the department supports students via funding beyond what’s easily found on their website.

*Aside: If you’re in this spot where your finances are the main barrier to applying, I would encourage you to reach out to the profs in a networking sense, just to get your name familiar to them. You don’t have to go into detail about financial issues, or mention them at all, but if you do, their reaction, as well as how they talk about research and other barriers, can be factored into whether you two will be a good fit. Because your choice in this matters too.

It’s about choosing the pet peeve that you would best be able to tolerate rather than choosing the prof with the best CV. It’s the pet peeves that students burn out on regardless of how amazing a mentor is otherwise.

hi there <3 found you on the history phd tag and followed you instantly! i'd love to hear about your research, if you're comfortable sharing. i'm applying for some (mostly american) phd programs next year. do you have any advice for this process? i'm really nervous about it :(
Hi!!
It’s lovely to meet you. :-) I’m still in coursework so my research is still evolving, but I do work in colonial America/maritime studies/women’s history. I’m particularly interested in examining the ways piracy drove a wedge between colonial governors in North America and the crown/parliament back in Britain. Colonial governors often arranged marriages between their daughters and pirates because it was economically beneficial to ally with a local pirate/also a wise defensive strategy for their port cities. I’m particularly interested in the stories of these young women in these arranged marriages! Of course, this could change/be refined in the next year of coursework/comprehensive exams. :-)
In terms of applying to programs, it can certainly seem overwhelming but it’ll be okay! Plus, you’re early in the application season so you have plenty of time. This might seem like an obvious tip, but staying as organized as possible will be your best help. I had a master spreadsheet of every school I applied to with columns for whether or not they required a personal statement, GRE scores, writing sample, and additional essays, and then just checked off each column as I turned required materials in for the individual school.
This next bit is probably discipline specific advice, but at least for history, make sure that you familiarize yourself with the faculty page for the school(s) you’re applying to. That way, when you’re writing your personal statement/statement of purpose, you can reference the work of one or two of those scholars that you could potentially see yourself working with and explain why they would be a good fit. Writing a statement of purpose/personal statement is different depending on where you’re applying and what their requirements are, but my general advice for a “formula” is to started with a super brief introductory anecdote or “why” you study history (in my case, I reference growing up hearing my grandpa telling me stories about growing up in Atlanta during the CRM and how it sparked an absolute fascination for me in history, even if I study a completely different period now). Then, go into a paragraph or two explaining your research and how you hope to expand that. The last paragraph/section should be dedicated to discussing how the faculty/department/school you’re applying to would be a good fit for you and your research. Most prompts I saw when I was applying varied in length from 500 to 1200 word maximums, so you don’t have too much time to get bogged down.
I know a lot of that was pretty general advice, but hopefully some of that is helpful and reassuring! You got this!

I also didn’t get to write the test until October, squishing the entire application timeline up against the December deadline. I didn’t want to reach out just to have to embarrassingly announce that I couldn’t afford the GREs and will have to wait until the next application cycle. I felt like was wasting their time and didn’t reach out until I had my scores.*

kit's january ko-fi fic: Anakitty AU
ugh i am so excited to be posting this on my kofi, i had such a blast writing this that i literally wrote 3k yesterday for it and 3k today in like. 3 hours. she's the definition of a silly little au becoming a fic!!
in this fic/au, anakin becomes a cat; meanwhile, obi-wan just happens to find a cat outside his doors that he decides to take in to care for, as he's a lonely old man now that his padawan has left the nest. good thing this cat is really affectionate and just melts when obi-wan gives it pets!
meanwhile anakin thinks it's a pretty sweet deal to be a cat forever if it means he has obi-wan's affection and attention and love and attention and pets and attention and, etc etc
here's a little snippet!:
“So you haven’t heard from Anakin in a few days,” Obi-Wan says carefully, brushing each slightly curly strand of the cat’s fur flat as he examines his grand padawan. “Are you worried about him?” Obi-Wan hasn’t heard from Anakin lately either, but the boy has been pulling slowly and carefully away from him for ages. For the most part, Obi-Wan has stopped reaching out, and their virtual communications have dried up. “Not anymore,” Ahsoka says, picking up her tea with an angry look at the cat. “How long has it been since he’s been like thi—I mean, since you last heard from him?” “Well, I couldn’t quite say!” Eleven days. “Though, if I’m being honest, the Council is close to drawing him up on charges for abandoning his troops without leave to take a holiday. I’m sure he will slip back into the Temple sooner or later.” “Wow!” Ahsoka’s voice is pitched much too loud and much too pointed to be natural. “Did you hear that, Anakin? You’re going to be tried for abandoning your troops if you don’t tell the Council you’re experiencing a bit of a setback soon!” The cat rolls onto its back with a loud purr, paws folded upward to allow Obi-Wan the maximum of tummy to scratch. Obi-Wan, knowing it's his due, scratches its tummy obligingly.
as a reminder for how these kofi fics work: i've uploaded the google document link into my gallery on ko-fi. to view the image and get the link that's in the image description, you have to be a monthly subscriber. it's $4 a month, and once you become a subscriber, you can read the 5 other ficlets i've uploaded! if you want to donate to get access, make sure the donation bar is set to "monthly" instead of "one time".
