Ride the Cyclone is in Australia, and goddamn am I pissed off.
So it's been known for a while that RTC is coming to Australia professionally, but only very recently was the cast announced.
DISCLAIMER: no hate to the cast. between the cost of living crisis and the government abandoning the entertainment industry, i don't blame these performers for taking the first job they're offered. So no hate to the cast!!!
The theatre running the production is Hayes Theatre Co, based in Sydney. I loved this theatre company, because they had a clear focus on amplifying the voices of marginalised performers, however it seems this does not extend to disabled performers.
For a company that has such a focus on diverse stories I was incredibly disappointed (but entirely unsurprised) to see that Ricky is being played by an able-bodied actor. The cast has racial, gender, and size diversity (which don't get me wrong, is wonderful), but its devastating to see that Hayes has clearly licensed the newer edition of the script, the one that erases any visible sign of Ricky's disability.
For a theatre that emphasises authentic, diverse representation on its stage, it is disgusting to see them perform a show that is a mockery of the disabled experience, created by a man who has used disability as his punchline for his entire career; the version of the script licensed being influenced by the very people who hate crimed the marginalised performer they were supposed to protect.
There are many fun shows Hayes could have picked up that are a much much better representation of the disabled experience -- Tae Tae in the Land of Yaas (an Australian Production, again something this company tends to showcase on their stage), The Little Big Things, How To Dance in Ohio, just to name a few. Instead they had to choose the one that is violently ableist and presents Ricky as a caricature of the stereotypical non-verbal disabled kid. They chose the show in which it is easily accessible knowledge that Ricky is supposed to be physically, and visibly, disabled, but that it was changed due to the author's inadvertent support of a violent hate-crime against a marginalised performer.
yannick-robin did not risk his fucking career bravely speaking out about this for it to be completely ignored and glossed over. he did not risk legal action from the very people who hurt him only for people to pretend the show was never problematic because its more convenient for them.
I feel like I'm screaming into a void here, begging for people to listen. Disabled people deserve to have their stories told authentically and safely. Ride the Cyclone is not authentic. It is not a safe show for disabled performers. It has done nothing but harm disabled people.
Hayes Theatre Co, you are now complicit in the damage this show has done to the disabled theatre community. You are complicit in the crimes of Jacob Richmond, Sarah Rasmussen, and her team of ableist shitheads. And if you say "oh they probably don't know"... If a professional theatre company in one of Australia's biggest theatre centres can't be assed to properly research the shows they are producing, then maybe they shouldn't be in the industry.
Hayes Theatre Co, if you say you care about diversity then ignore disabled people, you don't actually care about diversity. You care about being palatable to your audience.

Tagged by @wednesday-deetz , thanks for the tag bb🖤
1. Are you named after anyone?
-I am not lmao my mom picked my name using numerology. She isn't a hippie, but it was desperate times. Shitty 90s ultrasound showed I was a boy (BDE since womb) so she picked a boy name (Rafael) and that was that. Then surprise! Not a boy! That sent her down a spiral of indecision. It took her too so long to come up with a name for me, she used numerology on the last possible legal day to name me otherwise, the government would have chosen one for her.
2. When was the last time you cried?
-Like, a good cry? Probably December.
3. Do you have kids?
-No. Don't want them, don't like them.

Maybe you'd just like a break from Santa Claus, Ebenezer Scrooge, George Bailey, and the other usual suspects. Maybe you're just not feeling the Christmas spirit this year. Maybe you feel like you're going to scream if you see one more Hallmark Channel or Lifetime Christmas movie. Whatever the case, this blog has your back, with some off-the-sleigh-path movies that you can safely categorize as Christmas movies under the Die Hard rule.
• The Thin Man
Nick and Nora Charles drink as much as your uncle at the family Christmas party. But, while your uncle repeats everything he's read on Facebook or heard on Fixed Noise or Overthrow America Now, Nick and Nora say things that are witty and clever. And, every now and then, they get the whim to solve crimes. Here, they're visiting New York for the holidays when an old friend asks them to find her missing relative, the titular thin man.
• The Miracle of Morgan's Creek
This is the story of Norval Jones and Trudy Kockenlocker (let's take a moment to savor that name, shall we?). Norval has had a thing for Trudy as far back as anyone can remember. However, Trudy hasn't noticed: she's got a thing for men in uniform, and Norval is 4-F due to panic attacks. One spring night, Trudy uses a date with Norval as a smokescreen so she can go to a party for members of the armed forces who are heading off to fight in World War II. She returns with a splitting headache, hazy memories of the night before, and a cheap wedding ring on her finger. The wedding may not have been legal, but the consummation was 100% real, as she has a baby on the way. The movie follows their efforts to fix things so that she and her child won't be smeared for life.
• The Lemon Drop Kid
Bob Hope stars as Sydney Melbourne, although so many people call him the Lemon Drop Kid that he doesn't even recognize the other name. He makes a living as a racetrack tout, conning gullible bettors. That leads to trouble when he makes a mark of the arm candy of a crime boss. Now, he's got until Christmas to pay $10,000, or the matter will be handed over to Sam the Surgeon, who brags about how many of his patients don't make it off the operating table.
• Black Christmas
If not the first slasher movie, the one that helped pave the way. A mysterious killer holes up in the attic of a sorority house, killing the residents one by one. The original stars Olivia Hussey and John Saxon; it was followed by two movies using the same title, but both should be avoided.
• Mitchell
Dirty Harry led to a lot of knockoffs, and they don't come any dirtier than Mitchell; he's a police detective who always looks like he's either starting or coming off of a bender. He upholds the law, just as long as it suits his purposes; he shoots people just to find out who they are, and isn't above accepting a bribe in the form of a $1000 a night sex worker.
• Trading Places
A Wall Street up-and-comer and a street-level con artist find themselves at the center of a low-stakes wager between the heads of an established firm. Takes place at Christmas.
• Night of the Comet
In this movie, the Christmas season coincides with the Earth passing through the tail of a comet that hasn't come this close since the dinosaurs died out. As it turns out, that last part isn't a coincidence: Everyone who was fully exposed to the comet turns to red dust; everyone who was fully shielded by steel survives; and everyone who wasn't fully shielded turns into a zombie.
• Trancers
A villain in a postapocalyptic future uses time travel to attempt to kill off the government leaders before they're born, so Jack Deth must go back and live in his ancestor's body to stop him. Includes a shootout involving a zombie Santa.
• Brazil
Terry Gilliam's dystopian masterpiece.
• The Ref
Denis Leary is a cat burglar pulling off one last job before he retires. When things go wrong, he hides out in a nearby house until the heat dies down. Unfortunately for him, the house is home to a bickering couple, and he must pretend to be a marriage counselor when their family comes for Christmas dinner.
• Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Robert Downey, Jr., plays a burglar who gets mistaken for an actor. Cast in a mystery movie, he ruffles the feathers of a gay private eye (Val Kilmer), but the two must team up when Downey is framed for murder. This is the movie that convinced a lot of people that Downey would make a good Tony Stark.
• Krampus
A family finds itself dealing with the evil opposite of Santa Claus when their Christmas spirit is lacking. Tread carefully looking for this: Krampus is a figure of folklore, so anyone with film and a script can make a movie and call it Krampus. You want the 2015 feature film from the guy who made Trick 'r Treat.

Trigger Warning - this details acts of animal cruelty and then attacks on women.                                                      Ladies in Australia take some self defense classes now.
AU — Anakie, Victoria. Thirty years ago, a killer held a suburban town in the grip of terror for seven weeks of summer, causing real estate values to plunge and locals to take cover indoors at night. The inmate, who is serving a life sentence for a series of stalking murders targeting women because “I hate them,” will soon have a chance at parole.
Tumblr media
Paul Charles Denyer, the third of six children, was born in Sydney, Australia in 1972 to working class British immigrants, and began openly identifying as a woman named Paula in 2021. The Gender Question
Last year, the inmate filed freedom of information requests inquiring about the Victorian government’s gender reassignment surgery policy for inmates, and formally requested an evaluation for gender surgery. His application was denied by medical specialists, and he lost a legal battle seeking permission to buy and wear makeup.
Tumblr media
Mr Denyer has been behind bars since his 1993 arrest for attacking four random women with a knife in separate incidents, killing three.
Hate for Women, Urge to Kill
Video of the police interrogation following Mr Denyer’s arrest show him laughing when asked, “Were you responsible for the deaths of these women?” After over 1500 questions and hours in police custody, the suspect nonchalantly confessed. “Can you explain why we have women victims?” an officer inquired.
Mr Denyer replied: “I just hate them.”
The officer responded, “I beg your pardon,” to which Mr Denyer reiterated, “I hate them.”
The officer asked, “Those particular girls or women in general?” Mr Denyer told the officer, “General.” Mr Denyer additionally revealed: “I’ve always wanted to kill, waiting for the right time, waiting for that silent alarm to trigger me off.”
Youth
Tumblr media
As a child, Paul practiced slashing open the throats of inanimate objects and animals, long before starting on women at the age of 21.
He obsessively watched such gory horror flicks as The Stepfather, Fear and Halloween and became fixated on collecting knives, clubs and slingshots.
The boy began slitting open the throats of his sister’s toy bears. At one point, he killed the family kitten with his brother’s pocketknife and suspended its little body from a tree.
One day at school, Paul suddenly assaulted a fellow student who was chewing on a pen, causing the pen to become lodged in the other child’s throat.
Between the ages of 13 and 15, Paul had a series of run-ins with the law. Two incidents involved theft, including theft of a car. In other incidents, he made a false report to the fire brigade, caused willful damage and forced another boy to masturbate in front of children.
In the interview with police, he recalled having the urge to kill from age 14. As he grew to adulthood, he was never able to keep a job. His final employer suspected him of having slaughtered and dismembered two goats housed in a paddock next door.
Launch of Campaign of Terror
While his live-in girlfriend Sharon Johnson worked two phone jobs to support them both, Mr Denyer secretly embarked on a campaign of terror in their town of Frankston. He broke into the flat of one fellow tenant while she was away, and slashed her clothes and engagement pictures. He peeped into the window of another woman.
In February 1993, the malicious mischief escalated. Mr Denyer entered a nearby flat where Donna, a friend to him and his girlfriend, lived with her fiancé Les and their new baby. Mr Denyer slaughtered and disemboweled the couple’s pet cat, ripped out its eyes and spread its entrails around the flat. He sprayed cat’s blood everywhere, including on walls and in a laundry basket filled with baby clothes, and scrawled in blood “Dead Don” and “Donna – You’re Dead.” He slit the throats of the cat’s two kittens and left the tiny animals to bleed out in a baby’s bath filled with water.
Opening every drawer, he pulled out clothes, cut them up and strew them everywhere. Cupboard doors were completely destroyed. Photos of centerfold pin-ups seized from Les’s collection were slashed. One pin-up photo was placed atop the corpse of the mother cat while another was laid across the crib of the couple’s infant. He used shaving foam to write “Donna and Robyn” on the mirror of a dressing table. Robyn, a near stranger to Donna, had lived temporarily with Donna’s sister, Tricia, who had also befriended Mr Denyer and his girlfriend. Following the incident, Mr Denyer assured Donna she would be safe and promised to personally handle the vandal whenever he was caught.
Murder Spree
Tumblr media
On the evening of June 11, 1993, Mr Denyer grabbed 18-year-old Elizabeth Stevens when she disembarked a bus. Pretending that aluminum piping he held to the teen’s neck was a gun, he warned that he would shoot her if she screamed or tried to run.
During the eventual police interrogation, Mr Denyer recounted for arresting officers what had ensued after he forced the TAFE NSW student into Lloyd Park: I held the ‘gun’ to the back of her neck, walked across the track over towards the other small sandhill or something. And on the other side of that hill, she asked me if she could, you know – go to the toilet, so to speak. So I respected her privacy. So I turned around and everything while she did it and everything. When she finished we just walked down towards where the goal posts are and we turned right and headed towards the area where she was found. … I started choking her with my hands and she passed out after a while. You know, the oxygen got cut off to her head and she just stopped. And then I pulled out the knife … and stabbed her many times in the throat. And she was still alive. And then she stood up and then we walked around and all that, just walking around a few steps, and then I threw her on the ground and stuck my foot over her neck to finish her off. The murderer undressed the teen’s lifeless body from the waist up and used a homemade knife to carve a zigzag pattern into her chest. He dragged the body to a drain.
On July 8, nearly a month later, Mr Denyer spotted Roszsa Toth, a 41-year-old bank clerk, as she walked home from work. Warning that he had a gun, he tried to force Ms Toth into a nature reserve. She resisted. In the struggle, the suspect ripped out clumps of the woman’s hair and tore her clothes, and she repeatedly bit his finger to the bone. After successfully fighting off the assailant, Ms Toth flagged down a passing car.
Tumblr media
That plan foiled, Mr Denyer fled and targeted Debbie Fream that same evening. The 22-year-old mother of a 12 days-old newborn left her car door unlocked when she drove to the store for a bottle of milk. Mr Denyer entered the vehicle and hid in the back seat. When the woman returned from the store, he seized control of the car and drove away with her. He strangled Ms Fream and stabbed her 24 times before discarding the body in a paddock.
Tumblr media
The killer struck a final time on the afternoon of July 30, kidnapping 17-year-old Natalie Russell as she cut across a bike track on her way home from John Paul College. The girl valiantly fought back. Angered, Mr Denyer stabbed the teen viciously and repeatedly in the face and neck, and cut her throat. He abandoned the body in bushes near the bike track.
Clues
Shortly before the incident, a postman had sighted a yellow Toyota Corona in the area with a man slumped down in the front seat of the vehicle as if to hide. A passing police officer also spotted the car. Observing that the vehicle had no license plates, the officer recorded its registration number. Police learned that a vehicle matching the same description had been seen in the vicinity of the location in which Ms Fream’s body was discovered. Police traced the car’s registration, which led them to Paul Denyer. Captured Officers who went to the man’s residence observed multiple cuts on and a chunk of skin missing from his hand. Skin from an unknown hand had been found on the neck of the 17-year-old student who had become the serial killer’s final victim. Mr Denyer was hauled in for questioning. After learning of the wealth of forensic and circumstantial evidence against him, he admitted guilt.
Tumblr media
What Lies Ahead
Under the term of his sentence, Mr Denyer, who is now aged 50, will become eligible for parole in June 2023 when he will have served 30 years in prison.
Revealed: No Mercy, No Remorse, a feature film directed by Terry Carlyon and hosted by crime reporter John Silvester, is based on the killer’s life. The documentary will air on Stan, a streaming media network.

Christian school suspended student for coming out as gay

Christian school suspended student for coming out as gay
Tumblr media
When James Elliot-Watson was 15, his Christian school banned him from becoming a prefect and even suspended him because he’d revealed that he was gay.
James recalled his experience in year 10 in 2011. He said independent religious school in Sydney suspended him, denied him leadership roles and outed him to his parents.
“I came out in class and following that, I was pulled into the vice principal’s office,” James recalled.
“At that meeting, I was told I’d incur a school suspension. They told me I’d no longer be allowed to stand for prefect. I wasn’t allowed to go on any more leadership camps.
“The school pulled my siblings in and told them that I’d done something that was potentially going to endanger my family at the school.
“After that, the school called my parents in for a meeting and told them.”
The school told James and his parents he needed counselling. That included meetings with a so-called “ex-gay” man who told him he could change.
“There was a lot of posturing about AIDS. It was a real fear campaign run by people in that school to make me ‘scared straight’,” James recalled.
He’s one of over two dozen students and teachers whose stories are shared in a new report from Equality Australia.
The report describes the LGBTQ+ discrimination as “endemic” in religious schools and organisations around Australia.
James recalled of his own experience, “The onus was always put back onto me like it was my fault, because I was gay, because I was here talking about it.
“It was just a terrible weight, a needless weight to put on a teenager.”

A post shared by Equality Australia (@equalityaustralia)
‘Children have been told they are going to hell’
Lead author and Equality Australia Legal Director Ghassan Kassisieh said the new report “uncovers the tip of an ugly iceberg of LGBTQ+ discrimination”.
“We are talking about students who have been forced out of school or teachers who have been fired from their jobs or denied promotions,” he said.
“In other cases, children have been told they are going to hell.”
“These organisations rely on billions of dollars of public funding.
“But they’re not required to comply with the same laws in employment, education and service delivery as other organisations.
“The law in Australia is out of step with 21st century community expectations and it urgently needs to change.
“Everyone deserves the same legal protections from discrimination.”
National Catholic Education Commission director Jacinta Collins rejected the assertion that religious schools seek to discriminate against staff or students.
She claimed the schools were maintaining their religious identity and mission.
“If individuals do not support our ethos, they’re able to choose another school for enrolment or employment,” Ms Collins said.
However, Equality Australia found that nine out of ten of the Catholic schools reviewed – educating 70% of all Australian Catholic school students – published so little information about LGBTQ+ inclusion that prospective parents, students or employees can’t tell whether they’ll be welcomed or face discrimination.
‘Sitting on the fence is no longer good enough’
Equality Australia also found almost 1 in 10 of Australia’s largest faith-based service providers publicly discriminate against LGBTQ+ people. Almost 4 in 10 are silent in their positions on LGBTQ+ inclusion.
“The door should always be open to LGBTQ+ people who need healthcare, housing or disability support – no matter who is delivering that service,” Ghassan Kassisieh said.
“Sitting on the fence is no longer good enough. Services must be inclusive and say so, to ensure equal access for everyone who needs support.”
It comes as the government considers legislation to, among other things, scrap religious exemptions allowing these forms of discrimination.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has demanded bipartisan support, he says, to avoid a divisive culture war. But a political disagreement could shelve the reform. Equality Australia welcomed fresh talk of Labor working with the Greens to secure support.
Ghassan Kassisieh said legal protections for students and teachers, which Labor committed to before the election, are “too important to play politics with”.
“We urge all parliamentarians to engage with the government in good faith, and for the government to stay true to its election promise,” he said.

UK FREE TRADE AGREEMENT WITH AUSTRALIA
Tumblr media
The Australian Government welcomes the announcement that Royal Assent has been given to legislation to bring the Australia-United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement into effect in the UK.
The Australia-UK FTA is a historic agreement, representing the UK’s first new trade deal signed since Brexit. It will reset access to the UK market for Australian exporters. Royal Assent paves the way for both countries to bring the agreement into force as soon as possible.
The agreement will remove tariffs on over 99 per cent of the $9.2 billion Australian goods exported to the UK annually. It will help revitalise local manufacturing and provide new access to the UK’s government procurement market worth an estimated half a trillion dollars annually.
In addition, it will see Australian professionals gain access to the UK jobs market on par with EU nationals, with more opportunities for intra-company transfers and for working holiday makers.
This gold-standard agreement goes beyond Australia’s pre-existing approaches in bilateral agreements on gender and the environment by establishing new commitments and cooperation. Provisions on Investor-State Dispute Settlement, which allow investors to initiate legal action against governments, are not included in the agreement.
The agreement also includes a range of commitments that will advance the commercial interests of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, including providing for royalties to be paid to First Nations artists where their artworks are resold in the UK. Importantly, the Australian Government’s Indigenous Procurement Policy will continue to benefit Indigenous-owned businesses.
The Australia-UK FTA will enter into force after UK processes are complete and Australia and the UK exchange diplomatic notes identifying a commencement date.

Your Old Car’s New Journey: Car Removals And The Auto Sector
Tumblr media
The journey of an old car doesn’t end at a driveway or a garage. It’s the beginning of a new chapter that plays a crucial role in the auto sector. This blog explores the world of car removals in Sydney and their impact on the automotive industry.
The Need for Car Removals
Old cars, left unattended, are not more than an eyesore. They can leak harmful fluids and take up valuable space. Removing these cars is essential for maintaining a clean and safe environment. It’s not just about decluttering; it’s about responsible car ownership.
What Happens in Car Removals?
Car removal is a straightforward process. It often starts with a car owner contacting a removal service. The service assesses the car, provides a quote, and arranges a pick-up. The car is then towed away, marking the start of its new journey.
Step-By-Step Process of Car Pick-Up
The process of unwanted car pick-up is explained below:
Contact a Removal Service: When it’s time to sell your old car, the first step is finding a trustworthy car removal Sydney service. Look for a service with good reviews and a strong reputation. Making the right choice ensures a smooth and stress-free experience. You can usually contact them online or via phone, and they will guide you through the next steps.
Assessment and Quotation: Once you have chosen a service, they will assess your car. This assessment can involve checking the car’s condition, age, make, and model. Based on this evaluation, they will offer you a price. Some services might even offer a quote over the phone or online, making it more convenient for you.
Towing: After agreeing on a price, the car removal Sydney service will arrange to tow your car. This is usually done at no extra cost to you. They will set a date and time that’s convenient and come to your location. The towing process is handled professionally, ensuring that there’s no damage to your property.
Processing: The final step in your car’s journey is processing. At the facility, professionals will dismantle your car. Usable parts are salvaged for resale or reuse, and the rest of the car is recycled responsibly. This process reduces waste and is an integral part of the vehicle’s lifecycle.
Economic Aspect Of Car Removals
This industry is not just about disposing of old cars; it’s a thriving economic sector. It creates jobs, supports the recycling industry, and provides materials for other sectors. Old cars are not just scrap; they are valuable economic assets.
The car removal industry is a significant part of the global trade system. Salvaged parts and materials often find markets overseas, contributing to international trade dynamics.
Legal And Safety Considerations
Legal and safety procedures govern Sydney car removals. Owners must furnish proper documentation, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. This guarantees a safe and lawful process. Moreover, the towing and dismantling process must meet stringent safety standards, safeguarding workers, car owners, and the environment against potential accidents and hazards.
The Second Life of a Removed Car
Removed cars often find new life in different forms. Parts can be reused in other vehicles, and materials can be recycled for various purposes. The journey of a car doesn’t end at removal; it transforms into something new.
Many parts of an old car are still valuable and can be used in other vehicles. Engines, transmissions, mirrors, and even smaller components like switches and dials can find new life in other cars. This not only saves money for car owners looking for parts but also reduces the demand for new parts manufacturing.
Future of Car Removals in the Auto Sector
The future of the Sydney car collection appears promising. Furthermore, with technological advancements and heightened environmental awareness, this sector is poised for increased efficiency and eco-friendliness. As an evolving industry, it plays a significant role in the future of automobiles.
Moreover, emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning are set to revolutionize the car pick-up process. Consequently, these advancements could result in more efficient sorting and processing of materials. Additionally, as the global shift towards electric vehicles gains momentum, the car removal industry is adapting to handle the unique challenges posed by EVs.
Conclusion
Your old car’s journey is an important part of the auto sector’s lifecycle. Car collections are more than just getting rid of an old vehicle; they’re about responsibility, sustainability, and innovation. As we move towards a more eco-conscious world, the role of car pick-up becomes increasingly vital.

NSW government overhauls tax regime for Star Casino, arguing thousands of jobs were at risk
Sydney's Star Casino has been thrown a lifeline by the New South Wales government in the form of a "transitional" tax levy for the next seven years.
The Minns government today announced an overhaul of the previous government's tax arrangements for the casino arguing thousand of jobs were at risk if it did not act.
The Coalition had proposed raising the tax rate on poker machines duties by between 46.7 and 60.67 per cent, earning an estimated $360 million in additional revenue.
The rate will instead rise to 22.91 per cent in 2027 and stay that way until mid-2030.
The state government said former treasurer Matt Kean had not consulted with The Star on the plan.

Fury over PM's call on religious discrimination laws
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/fury-over-pms-call-on-religious-discrimination-laws/
Fury over PM's call on religious discrimination laws
Tumblr media
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has caused outrage with an ultimatum on his government’s religious discrimination legislation.
The Sydney Morning Herald reported Anthony Albanese told a Labor caucus meeting on Tuesday morning he wouldn’t put the legislation forward unless opposition leader Peter Dutton and the Coalition supported it.
Scott Morrison’s own religious discrimination bill famously fell apart before the 2022 election. Several Liberal MPs ultimately voted against it in parliament.
At the time, Labor promised to introduce their own reforms. Now, the government has a pair of as-yet-unseen bills ready, the Herald reports.
Anthony Albanese confirmed he’d told Peter Dutton the new proposal must have bipartisan support before he put it forward.
Ultimatum will delay removal of religious exemptions
However, LGBTQIA+ advocates are angry as this ultimately will likely delay one crucial reform: the long-awaited removal of religious exemptions permitting discrimination against LGBTIQA+ staff and students.
Those exemptions in Australian law currently permit religious schools and other faith organisations to discriminate against lesbian, gay and trans people.
Equality Australia has called for the government to repeal the exemptions for years.
They’ve warned Albanese he must keep his election commitment to do so and are frustrated at the prospect of more delays.
“While we continue to wait for the law to change, more people will lose their jobs and more children will be denied leadership roles or be forced to leave school,” Equality Australia’s Legal Director Ghassan Kassisieh said.
“We have spent more than a decade raising this issue, with many reviews and attempts to change the law.
“If the Prime Minister is serious about fulfilling his election commitment, he can take simple and quick steps right now to end discrimination against LGBTQ+ students and staff in religious schools.”
Just.Equal spokesperson Rodney Croome said Coalition support for the move was “very unlikely” and blasted Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
“Last year Albanese walked across Sydney Harbour Bridge to mark WorldPride,” he said.
“Now, he’s throwing us off the bridge to appease those who want the right to expel, sack and otherwise mistreat us.
“In its entire time in office, the Coalition failed to protect LGBTIQA+ students and staff from discrimination by faith-based schools. It’s very unlikely to have changed its mind.
“By giving the Coalition a veto over Labor policy, Anthony Albanese has broken Labor’s election commitment and sold out LGBTIQA+ students and staff.”
Rodney Croome said his home state of Tasmania had banned faith-based schools discriminating against LGBTIQA+ staff and students “for a quarter century without the sky falling in.”
Liberal Michaelia Cash argues for religious freedom
At the weekend, the Coalition’s shadow Attorney-General Michaelia Cash said she’d heard “very concerning things” about the Albanese government’s proposals.
She demanded religious schools be able to “operate in accordance with their values, their doctrines and beliefs.”
“There is a real risk here that religious schools will not be able to conduct themselves in accordance with their values,” the Liberal MP told Sky News.
On Monday the Greens argued religious schools – particularly those receiving public funding – shouldn’t be discriminating against people.
Greens LGBTQIA+ spokesperson Stephen Bates said he’s also worried that, just like in 2022, the rebooted religious discrimination debate will “unleash a torrent of LGBTIQA+ hate in our political system, our media and our community.”
“Anti-discrimination laws can’t be a Trojan horse for other kinds of discrimination,” he added.
