The Male Genius
02/01/2023
The male genius.
I am a woman, yet somehow I have become entirely enthralled with the male genius.
The male genius is a myth, of course. And it is not miraculously that I have come to center so much of my media consumption around this myth. Putting on a new movie, picking up a new book, listening to a new album. These male geniuses are everywhere. Why is it that Elliot Smith seems to capture the essence of our existence so perfectly? How do Shakespeare or DFW or Poe manage to write in a way that seems so innovative and incomparable? The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, Michael Jackson, Prince, Tupac, Elvis, Fitzgerald, DeLillo, Scorsese, Hitchcock, Spielberg, Nolan, Mozart, Liszt, Chopin, Beethoven. It continues. It continues on and on, forever and ever. Men are the universal constant. Jesus himself. God always referred to as a “he”. A force so much larger than humanity is a man, consciously or subconsciously. We all know “history was written by men” but let’s not forget about everything else.
I will never forget the time a friend (a man) marveled at my music listening habits once, telling me so sincerely: “You only listen to them (some kpop group I can’t bring myself to remember) because you think they’re attractive.” The shock on his face when I told him I had no clue what this particular group of men looked like was laughable. Sure there can be elements of attraction whenever you consume something. Watching a good movie and finding out the dude behind the camera is just your type. It’s a pleasant surprise. But you don’t go on to scour streaming sites for his films just because you think the guy’s attractive… You scour and scale because you have never seen a person use a camera like that. Write a song like that. Describe a feeling like that. He may even be the exact, feature for feature, opposite of your type. He may remind you of that man you wish more than anything to forget. But wow have you ever heard someone speak so eloquently? Have you ever seen anyone with such unique little ticks and habits? Have you ever heard a voice like that? And that attitude is simply…
They are everywhere all the time. “The first to do this”, “The first to land here”, “The first to think of this”.
I sit. I write things. I delete. I wonder why there aren’t more women in the things I consume.
The terrible reality is, the male genius may not be a myth. It may very well be the truth. Maybe they are just that good. And it’s not that us women are utter shit. It’s not that we can’t write in awe-striking ways or convey our existence along the same vein as an Elliot Smith song. It’s more like we’re not allowed to. There are very certain things a woman should be. People flamed on Jennifer Lawrence recently after she admitted how proud she was for her role as a major female protagonist in popular culture following The Hunger Games movies. A studio exec had told her something along the lines of “men can’t relate to female stories.” She was determined to prove them wrong through the spirit of Katniss Everdeen. The internet-o-sphere lit flames under her bed after that interview. They pulled up all sorts of previous examples of “strong” and “independent” female characters that did it before her. The flames consumed her, the blame fell squarely on her shoulders because God forbid she give herself a little credit where credit is due. Everyone chose to ignore what the studio exec had said.
Men are the geniuses always because they are allowed to be. They are allowed to sit in a studio for 3 days in a row, screaming demands in all directions until they make the perfect track, only to beat their wife and small child when they finally make an appearance back home. They are free to be raging alcoholics and avid drug users, writing down their life-shattering experiences for pages on end, and when they pass they will forever be memorialized as the tragedy we should’ve done more to protect. We will trust the Elvis biopic of a male genius into the hands of another male genius and milk 8 Oscar nominations from the results. We will similarly trust these men with the Marylin Monroe biopic fated to die a silent death and fade into the obscure of unfortunately shitty movies. Some man will confess on a forum for musicians that Alanis Morisette is his guilty pleasure because, naturally, she is something to be ashamed of, nevermind the quality of her music. I will continue to add song after song to my playlist, watch film after film, read book after book, learn fact after fact because those feelings are what I want from life. I want to be able to live it the way I desire. I dream of breaking free from expectations. “Woman” is a label held above my head at all times, that I wear proudly, but one that brings me great pain. Nothing I can do will subdue this feeling. I experience my freedom vicariously through all the men who are allowed to express their pain and suffering without fear of revolt or mockery, but I will always continue to dig through the pile for the female genius. The Ella Fitzgeralds, Donna Tarts, Cate Blanchetts, Mary Shellys, and The Wachowskis of the world. Our collective suffering knows little bounds. We are bonded together by it across the world. And we can also make those unimaginable, irreplicable, inherently important things. One day, the act of being a woman won’t be anything to be ashamed of.

5 Things You Need To Know Before Moving to Dallas-Fort Worth
Tumblr media
Everything is bigger in Texas—including the number of people who live here. According to macrotrends, “the current metro area population of Dallas-Fort Worth in 2023 is 6,574,000, a 1.33% increase from 2022.” In fact, every year for the past four years has seen that much population growth or greater in Dallas-Fort Worth. Things aren’t slowing down, either. If you're planning a move to North Texas like so many other folks recently, there are a few things you need to know before moving to Dallas-Fort Worth to make the adjustment easier (e.g. moving containers) and setting your expectations. Here are five of them: 1. Size The Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex covers almost 10,000 square miles of land, “making it larger in land area than the states of Rhode Island and Connecticut combined,” according to Wikivoyage. But more and more of that land is becoming occupied as new housing developments pop up to keep up with the influx of new residents. The satellite view of DFW looks much different than it did just 10 years ago. 2. Routes Show us a growing city and we’ll show you the need for lots of construction. From roads and highways being developed to new residential structures, businesses and more, there’s a lot of work going on these days. But the good news is that this will all pave the way (no pun intended) for a more enjoyable quality of life for residents.  3. Traffic Another thing you need to know before moving to Dallas-Fort Worth is that more people means more traffic. Since DFW has quite a ways to go with its public transportation system, you’ll likely want to drive to most destinations (though there are trains and buses that can get you to major destinations). With frequent accidents and construction, it pays to at least check your route with your preferred map app before you head out. But if you plan properly (or carpool), you’ll avoid a lot of frustration. 4. Weather Temperature swings of 50 degrees aren’t uncommon in Texas, as is snow on a random day in spring. The area is known for sudden thunderstorms that pop up, bringing with them the possibility of tornadoes. As a new Texan, you’ll likely want to check the weather as well before you start or plan your day. 5. Activities Lastly, there’s a national stereotype that there isn’t much to do in Texas, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. In DFW, we love our sports, music venues and outdoor activities. Beautiful hiking trails, golf courses and parks are common sights in North Texas and there is something for everyone to enjoy. If you’re considering the things you need to know before moving to Dallas-Fort Worth, a portable moving container can make it a seamless experience. Chapter 4 Part 2
Sex became another chore that needed to get done. Here I was again, disconnecting myself during the act. There was very little love involved in the act. Daydreaming, singing music in my head, anything to get myself away from looking at my husband and only seeing Dax. I was for all intents and purposes a “dead fuck”. Sex abuse, manipulation, and verbal abuse became my husband’s weapons to which he wielded expertly to his advantage.
Before I knew it four years had come and gone. Everyday feelings of never being good enough for my husband and daughter. One day I had enough, my dam broke, and I spoke up to the abuse I had endured. A momentary event of self-preservation kicked in and I clapped back at his verbal on slot. I spoke my mind feverishly about what I thought was going on, that I was tired and just wanted a nap. That was the day Levi’s words became actions. I was slapped in the face, hard enough to get my undivided attention. I went to my room with Jade and began to assess my current situation, taking stock in actions, justifying his behaviors as many victims do. It was then that I realized that once again, I was late. I went to the bathroom and peed on a stick, only to find out what I knew was already true. I was yet again pregnant. And I was then left with the cringing thought of bringing another child into this already unstable home. I took the pregnancy test to Levi, throwing it into his lap and telling him the “good” news. I told him congratulations, as I went back to my room to cry again. He called his family in excitement; I was left in despair.
Verbal and sexual abuse continued throughout the pregnancy, not becoming physical during that time. At least, Levi was smart enough to have the sense to not harm his unborn child or the vessel that carried it. I learned early in my pregnancy that our second child was going to be a big one. As you can imagine, a bigger child would only complicate me working full-time on my feet. My retail job saw my struggles and moved me to the cash office, where I would be able to sit down and still work. I worked all the way up until my scheduled c-section date. I was grateful this pregnancy was, I was losing weight by the end of it, barely having the energy to get up from bed every day.
Laying naked and prepped for surgery I had a fleeting wish to not survive it. I was terrified of what was coming next. If after the birth of this child, the abuse would continue or intensify. Again, hearing my now son’s cry, pushed all the fear away. My son, Lee, was a hefty young man. Almost 11 pounds, and two feet long. I didn’t have a new-born, I had a toddler, no wonder I hurt all the time.  No wonder it felt like he was ripping me in half every time he stretched himself out. My husband had a son, someone he had often wished for. Due to bleeding complications from the c-section and tube-tying surgery, I was unable to hold my son until the next my son until the next day. But man… when that moment came, I knew what real love was once again. Lee had a full head of black hair, my dominant chin, my blue eyes and rolls for days, favoring his father’s olive skin tone.
“He sounds so handsome. Did you get a chance to enjoy it this time?”
I would have, had Levi not dropped a bomb shell on my recovery. While in the hospital, Levi informed me that we would be moving to the DFW area, three hours away from what I called home, to be “closer to my family for once”. My recovery in hospital went well, but that would be short-lived because now I get to move my family away from everything familiar and start over.
Jade meeting her little brother was unforgettable to say the least. She began by rubbing his little head and kissing his face. Saying, “that’s my baby”, every time someone else would look at him. The day we brought him home was the day I remembered that I had forgotten a very important conversation with Jade. When she was assisting me with changing Lee’s diaper, and witnessed a body part she had never seen, it dawned on me that I forgot to tell her there was a difference between boys and girls. All the family at the witness, Jade screamed out, “What the fuck is that”! Everyone turned to look at me, and I hung my head in embarrassment.  I was mortified.
            “Oh… her first cuss word”.
Yes! Her first cuss word. And all at the hands of a forgetful mother.

Several Reasons To Have A Great Time At A Strip Club In The DFW Area
If you live, or expect to be in, the DFW area then you have multiple reasons to choose to be going to an exclusive gentlemen's club or cabaret. a typical venue for entertainment there are many reasons to consider doing so so that you might raise your enjoyment while in DFW or one of the nearby communities like Keller.
For starters, you can savor a wide range of tremendous menu items. You can enjoy quality steaks, lobster, salad, desserts, house specialty dishes as well as fine wine and drinks. There is tremendous satisfaction in rewarding yourself with good food and good company, especially if prepared well and presented in a nice atmosphere.
Second, you have the option of entertainment either at lunch, the latter part of the afternoon, dinnertime, or well into the late evening. This gives you flexibility depending on your schedule and whether or not you plan to be entertaining other people such as business clients, your colleagues, old friends, or just if you need to get away for a while from everyone you normally see everyday. Having the food and drink options, combined with the flexibility of times to visit a high-end club, give you options that you normally don't have with other entertainment such as sporting events, movie theaters, art galleries, and other options in a large city like Dallas. Also, most high-end strip clubs are open on most days of the year except for the major national holidays. This gives you options for entertainment such as the night before Thanksgiving, Halloween, New Year's eve, the weekend leading up to the 4th of July, etc. You even can get VIP membership status which can provide several benefits like private rooms, private dancers, business meeting spaces and additional benefits.
Third, you will enjoy not only beautiful women at your table but also see some terrific performances on stage. Whether it is an aerial hoop performer, a passionate dance routine, or seeing a woman get lost in the music while performing on a pole you will get a chance to escape your world for a while and see beautiful women tap into their sensuality. With the current societal environment preventing that from happening publicly in so many areas, a high end strip club is one of the last places to witness firsthand something sensual and captivating happening right in front of you.
Finally, there are other events which take place at the higher-end strip clubs besides table dances and stage performances. You might be there to watch college or professional football teams, or you can partake in a game of poker with one of the women as a quality dealer. There are theme parties such as back-to-school night, Halloween, comic convention themes, and much more. Often there are couples nights for those want to have terrific food and see a cabaret-style show. Sometimes, guests arrive just to meet other high rollers who happen to be in the club at the same time - much like why one would join a country club or similar entity.
Hopefully you now have many reasons why you should consider visiting a top gentleman's club like The Lodge when you are in the DFW area including a city like Irving.

Wednesday, March 27th, 2019 – Thoroughly Engaging and Entertaining, The Revivalists Take Good Care of Their Dallas Fans
Tumblr media
Photos by Jordan Buford Photography A Wednesday night definitely isn’t the prime night for a concert, and for a time in the early evening it looked as if South Side Ballroom wouldn’t be too crowded, the vastness of the venue being obvious. That was early on though, about the time the lone opening act, Rayland Baxter, set things in motion around eight o’clock. As he and his band performed, droves of concertgoers continued to pack in, ready for something fun to break up the monotony of the work week, and everyone seemed to know that The Revivalists would be the cure for that. The eight-piece ensemble had returned to the road earlier in the month, continuing to tour in support of their recently released fourth studio album, Take Good Care (out via Loma Vista Recordings/Concord Music Group). With each new album The Revivalists have experienced more substantial success, this latest one being no different, spawning some of their biggest singles to date. In turn, the Take Good Care Tour had them gracing some of the largest stages they have headlined in their career, and for it they had prepared an absolutely vigorous performance. The audience reflected the diverse reach that The Revivalists’ music has, patrons ranging from their twenties to many who were middle-aged and up, all packing in as tightly as they could, consumed by excitement as they awaited their showtime. Andrew Campanelli and Paulet "PJ" Howard  took the stage as the house lights dimmed at 9:16, taking a spot behind their respective drum kits where they proceeded to knock out a heavy, steady set of beats. In a way they were almost dueling drums; and as bold a step as that is for a band to incorporate two percussionists into their sound, it never sounded like excess this night. Quite the contrary, actually, jointly further fleshing out the music and providing a richer depth to it. Howard has been a part of the group for a little more than a year now though he’s still the newest piece to the band, his addition having emboldened their already distinct sound that draws on elements of rock, soul and funk to name a few. A sound that could only be born out of the style and flare that is found in their hometown of New Orleans.
Tumblr media
As they carried on their band mates filed out one by one, George Gekas grabbing his bass and taking his spot over on stage left where he was soon joined by pedal steel guitarist Ed Williams. To the right of the massive risers that housed the drum kits was another riser with the keyboards, Michael Girardot climbing up behind them. Each received thunderous applause as they found their way out underneath the stage lights, guitarist Zack Feinberg garnering some of the loudest yet when he appeared; while Rob Ingraham waved his saxophone in the air after grabbing it before proceeding to twirl it around in his hands. The most applause seemed to have been reserved for David Shaw, the frontman bounding out on stage with vim, raring to go; and with everyone in place they were off. The attention would largely be on Take Good Care this night, and while it has become customary for bands to open with something from their current release, The Revivalists opted for some older material. Songs they knew would instantly click with the spectators and deliver that euphoric rush that a concert is about, while also being songs they were most comfortable with and made the most of their showmanship.
Tumblr media
Not every band can come out and completely captivate an audience from the first note, though this octet succeeded at it as Feinberg launched into the opening riff of “Criminal”. It played to the strengths of these finely tuned musicians who were in peak form from all of the touring they’ve currently been doing, allowing them to quickly find their groove both as individuals and as a unit. Performing that cut from City of Sound seemed like second nature to them. It was noticeable in the way they handled themselves; the finesse that Shaw exhibited when it came to interacting with the onlookers and building a rapport with them being inspiring. The relationship he and his band mates worked to achieve transcended the general performer/fan or creator/consumer relationship (however you wish to view it), bridging that gap by striving to make every last soul in the building feel as if they were an integral part of the show. A large runway type structure extended from the center stage, jutting out slightly into the crowd and that was where the vocalist spent a great deal of his time, making sure they were feeling it as he got out amongst them in a sense, frequently pointing the microphone towards everybody as he sprinted around.
Tumblr media
Just in that opening number there was enough going on that it was almost overwhelming to the senses, just being so much to try to observe and take in and The Revivalists had barely begun to scratch the surface. Attention went back to Feinberg as he began to delicately pick at his axe, soon revealing the next song to be "It Was a Sin", which was met with roaring fanfare. There’s a cinematic quality to that tale of regret and remorse, the way it builds to something grand before tapering back, ultimately springing to life. Shaw continued to command the audience, giving them opportunities to sing along at various moments; while Ingraham suddenly disappeared from sight, jumping down into the pit and standing on the barricade in front of fans that had scored a spot up front. Upon finishing his part on the saxophone, he proceeded to shake as many hands as he could, further delighting the already enthralled onlookers before racing back up to the stage.
Tumblr media
Shaw followed his lead during the smooth and infectious "You and I", the vocalist leaving the stage and interacting even more directly with the patrons. During the other times he was constantly covering the length of the stage, he and his band mates pushing one another to go bigger and bolder; and at one moment he was he even seen sneaking over behind a member of the security team, quickly tapping him on the shoulder before running off, playfully smiling once the guy looked at him. The point is for the entire band this was about having fun, and they were fully embracing that concept. One song that exemplified that the best was “Oh No”. The sax and trumpet – performed by Girardot – were featured prominently and infused the groovy number with an undeniable party vibe that made it feel like an anthem whose intent was to get everyone moving. Indeed, it did, most every soul doing whatever their version of dancing was, just cutting loose and enjoying themselves and the superb music that was so conducive of an excellent time.
Tumblr media
They meshed it with the lead single from Take Good Care, "All My Friends" already feeling like a long-standing favorite of The Revivalists’, who tore through the funky tune with searing passion. They even embellished it some, tacking a striking instrumental outro on to it, allowing the musicians to commit themselves to their craft in a different way than had been observed up to that point, spectators staring in awe of their abilities. "All in the Family" came as a pleasant surprise, that gem from Men Amongst Mountains demonstrating the more aggressive rock style that The Revivalists’ possess; the all-out assault Feinberg unleashed in the form of his wicked guitar solo hammering home just how wonderfully chaotic they can be when they so choose. Back on the other end of the spectrum was the rich and warm "Got Love", which was easily the most accurate song of the night, the love between performers and audience being mutual.
Tumblr media
Their 75-minute long set just flew by. That was so clearly their aspiration: to get people lost in the music and performance and they achieved it, the final song of the night coming rather abruptly. It at least felt that way, being a bit shocking to think the night was already over with. The Revivalists went out with a bang thanks to their final couple of tracks, "Wish I Knew You" wrapping it all up in a soothing yet mighty fashion. “We’ll see you again. Somewhere, somehow…” Shaw remarked as they bid everyone farewell. An encore was imminent. However, what came as a surprise was the extent of it once the band members reemerged from the wings of the stage a couple of minutes later. That encore was something of a marathon, four songs stretching on for thirty additional minutes of pure bliss, climatic moments coming at every turn.
Tumblr media
Some of the more reserved cuts had been saved for last, Shaw taking up an acoustic guitar as he spoke of a song he had written more than a decade before. One where the idea for it just struck him and the entire thing came together within the day. “It’s about catching fireflies,” he finished, the elated crowd reacting strongly to that. "Catching Fireflies" alone took up nearly a third of the time of their encore thanks to the remarkable crescendo they added to it, steadily building it up before letting it explode for a phenomenal finish. The robustly delicate originals followed one after another before The Revivalists switched gears for the finale. The lone cover of the night, they turned to Pink Floyd’s catalog for something a bit different by their standards. There are two perspectives that can be had concerning their rendition of “Have a Cigar”. One is that it was a rather straightforward cover. The song wasn’t altered in any significant way or anything, keeping it true to form; and usually it is better when an act does something to make their version stand apart from any other, leaving their mark on it so that it’s theirs. On the other hand, all of that was mostly irrelevant, because they did such a stellar job with that classic rock tune. It brilliantly highlighted the raw musical prowess of Girardot, Feinberg, Williams, Gekas, Campanelli, Ingraham and Howard, all of whom were able to showcase a different side of themselves. Even without attempting to redefine the track they still owned it, it being topnotch in every respect, capping the evening off in a memorable fashion.
Tumblr media
There was no question about it, The Revivalists gave everything they had in them during the upwards of two hours that they had the stage, leaving it all out there underneath those lights. While the terms “show” and “performance” are often used interchangeably (and I, too, am guilty of that at times), it’s important to remember there is a distinction between the two. What The Revivalists unleashed on South Side Ballroom this night was a performance through and through, and one that could serve as a burning example to other acts as to what they should be like as a live act.
Tumblr media
The showmanship that they exhibited – as both individuals and a group – was absolutely amazing. There was so much charisma about them that it was impossible to not be utterly transfixed by what they doing, keeping the onlookers’ eyes on a constant move, the leading role frequently shifting amongst the eight of them. To even call The Revivalists a well-oiled machine doesn’t seem to fully justify what they are capable of. As a group they have perfected the chemistry with one another, working off one another’s energy, yet each member and their brilliant talent also stood on their own, the imperative role they played always noticeable. That impeccable musicianship did rule the performance, but not so much so that it out did the fun atmosphere they worked tirelessly to cultivate. Like all performances this one was for the fans, and that was a fact The Revivalists were keenly aware of. As was stated earlier on, they took every step necessary to make the audience feel as if they were part of what was going on while simultaneously keeping them entertained. No easy feat, though they made it look effortless.
Tumblr media
A carefully curated set list aided them on that endeavor, each song being strategically placed so that it could further enliven patrons, kicking things up a notch from where the previous number had just left it. And even with that aspect of the show being planned out, there was still a sense of spontaneity about it that allowed the performance to feel unpredictable. Just like the dynamics that went into it. Once it was all said and done The Revivalists had succeeded in delivering just what everyone in attendance had desired. More than just an entertaining way to break up the work week, they had given their fans an experience. An experience they got lost in, all the cares of the outside world melting away as they got lost in the music, allowing themselves to enjoy every last second of it. That’s primarily what music is about, providing an escape from reality, no matter how temporary. For an act to bring that into the live setting is something, especially in the scope that was seen this night. It’s a hallmark of a legitimate group of performers.
Tumblr media
If you haven’t seen The Revivalists, you owe it to yourself to catch a show. At the very worst these guys exemplify every great quality of what a concert experience is supposed to be. At best, they elevate it. After witnessing them, I’m quite inclined to go with the latter. 2019 will continue to be a busy year for the band, who has dates scheduled through the fall at the moment. Those include an April 6th show at Key West Amphitheater in Key West, FL; a performance at The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in New Orleans, LA on April 26th; and a gig at The Fillmore in New Orleans on May 2nd. The eastern portion of the Unite States will be their focus during the summer; and on September 21st they can be seen at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, CO. A complete list of their upcoming events can be found HERE; and do give Take Good Care a listen via either iTUNES or GOOGLE PLAY. Set List: 1) “Criminal” 2) "It Was a Sin" 3) "You and I" 4) "When I'm with You" 5) “Oh No” 6) "All My Friends" 7) "Change" 8) "All in the Family" 9) "You Said it All" 10) "Got Love" 11) "Fade Away" 12) "Celebration" 13) "Wish I Knew You" Encore 14) "Catching Fireflies" 15) "Some People Say" 16) "Soulfight" 17) “Have a Cigar” (Pink Floyd cover)

I was reading your response to that anon about renji's character - very nice response by the way! - and saw your tag about "infinite jest." I own that book and i'm curious on your thoughts on it? i find it a bit daunting (my paperback is in size 9 font, single space [!!!]) and i have plans to read it this summer. How did you feel about the story? Would you reread it? Did you take notes? (I read a review where someone had a notebook on the book so they could keep track of the story). If you answer, thank you for doing so!
WOW I feel like I have been waiting my whole life for someone to ask me for my Infinite Jest wisdom! I feel so honored!
So, I read Infinite Jest twice, about 7 years ago. I am constantly threatening to read it again. The first time took me six months, I do not remember how long the second time took. I did not do this for a class or anything, I just did it because I am insufferable.
My first tip to reading Infinite Jest is to think of it as a project, not like reading a book. Reading Infinite Jest is not very much at all like reading a book. It is not a story. It is the negative space where a story should be. It is weird and boring and confusing and insufferable, and reading it changed my entire perspective on what stories are and formed a new lens through which I perceive all media. I habitually read before bed, and there were some nights I was not able to make it through an entire page. This is not to say I read it and gave up--the text is very rich and chewy and sometimes I was just “full” after just a few paragraphs.
I am not sure if taking notes would help. The problem with Infinite Jest is that it presents you with a fantastic volume of information, most of which is only tangential related to the “story”. I feel like trying to keep track of what’s happening might make things harder. A lot of the information is arranged in appendixes at the end for easy reference. I think I read The Filmography of J. O. Incandenza about eleventy-thousand times, and the very serious descriptions of made up movies featuring an anthology-style cast has stuck with me more than an other aspect of the book (Blood Sister: One Tough Nun and Medusa vs. the Odalisque in particular). I feel like color sticky tabs might be more helpful, if you’re looking for an organizational scheme? I had two book marks, one to mark my regular place and one to mark my place in the appendixes.
You should probably be passingly familiar with Hamlet before you read it. For some reason, the entire first time I read it, it never occurred to me that it was a retelling of Hamlet, but it is, in fact, a weird, tennis and drug-themed re-telling of Hamlet. That’s why it’s called Infinite Jest, you see. I am a moron.
I did not take notes. I just let it wash over me. The first thing I did when I finished reading it, was to pick up my phone and google “what happened at the end of Infinite Jest”. I read a few blog posts and learned some things. I also felt reassured that no one really knows what happened at the end of Infinite Jest. The second read was much, much more satisfying, now that I knew what the hell was happening.
If you are not enjoying your Infinite Jest experience, you should stop. It was a very rewarding project for me, but it was also a lot of work. There is a certain kind of person who will tell you “everyone should read Infinite Jest!” and I heartily disagree. It is definitely Not for Everyone and there is no shame in giving it a shot and then giving up or taking a pass entirely.
It takes place in the not-so-distant future. Half of the book is extremely prescient, and half of it misses the mark in a hilarious way. DFW completely predicted Netflix streaming and Zoom backgrounds, but he also thought that people would get obsessed with live events and would go to see ice melt on a duck pond. A significant portion of the novel details an amateur documentary made with puppets detailing an idiot president coming to power, taking over Mexico and Canada, and turning Vermont into a nuclear waste dump and I am honestly afraid to reread the book because of how it’s just going to be an extremely accurate depiction of the Trump presidency.
I do want to point out that DFW was both a problematic and deeply troubled man. He is not very good at writing anyone who is not a cis white man. I think he meant well, but we all know what that’s worth. When I read the book, I was not as discerning about these things as I am now, but I definitely recall some cringing, and I suspect I would be cringing even harder if I re-read it now. To me, DFW was an incredibly interesting writer. His descriptions of depression are unparalleled. He thought very deeply about what it means to be human, as is evident in his This is Water speech (a friend of mine happened to graduate from Kenyon when he gave that speech and said it was amazing in person). I often wonder what sort of person he would be if he had lived, what his opinion would be on things like the Black Lives Matter movement. I am not a DFW scholar, I cannot say. He is not with us anymore, though, and my philosophy is take his writings with the grain of salt that he was who he was. Infinite Jest is not a happy book about well-adjusted people.
Michael Schur, one of the creators of Parks and Rec, B99, and The Good Place is a huge Infinite Jest fan and wrote his thesis on it and owns the film rights to the book. Parks and Rec contains a number of Infinite Jest references, but they are mostly just names, they aren’t anything very clever. The Good Place is full of rich Infinite Jest vibes. Schur also directed the music video for the Decemberist’s Calamity Song, which is a scene from the book where the tennis kids play a weird game about nuclear brinksmanship. I did not know this the first time I saw the music video and I wish there was footage of me watching it and losing my shit in real time as it slowly dawned on me what was happening. If you have read my fanfic Call Me Back When the War is Over, the scene where they watch the Brawl is loosely based on this scene.
I wish you luck in your quest! One thing that may happen to you is that you may feel the need to talk about Infinite Jest, and if so I am here, please feel free to message me if you need.

1, 11, and 32 for the writer meme! 💜
(Thank you for asking! I’ve probably paraphrased some of the questions, I was jotting stuff down in a notebook oops)
1. Do you listen to music while writing? Hmm...not usually, I mostly listen to podcasts or video essays (especially ones I’ve heard before, because it’s soothing). But if I’m writing smut with Riona, I’ll have Hell Yeah by Rev Theory on repeat. (Also Ideas by Au/Ra is a good one for anything to do with A, thanks @ava-du-mortain!)
11. Do you have any major books/authors that influence you? (I mean you, specifically - and some other great writers here) But other than that, not really I think? I got told after writing the Decay prompt for 31 Days (body horror tw, here) that it had DFW vibes, so that was a huge compliment.
32. Most difficult character to write? Any kind of happy-go-lucky character (because it goes against my own nature so much alkfjasdlf) - if I have to pick one, probably Felix/Farah.
