Dungeon Meshi: Quick Reacts (CHAPTER 1)
Tumblr media
Hey guys, what’s up! I’ve been neglecting to read things for a long time, being as busy as I am, but I thought it was about time I actually consume some media instead of making it for once. That’s the healthy way of doing it, I hear!
Anyway, since I like to react to the things I read, I figured I may as well record my reactions to the manga known as ‘Dungeon Meshi’ or ‘Delicious in Dungeon’ as its localized title.
Tumblr media
You can read the manga on your own here! Or find it elsewhere, though I encourage you to support the artist as much as you’re able.
I cannot promise that this will be an ongoing series, I just wanted to have a bit of fun with it. This read-and-comment liveblog will contain spoilers - obviously!
Let’s get right into it!
For the sake of clarity - this comics reads RIGHT to LEFT!
Tumblr media
Immediately, this is way more intense than what I was expecting! I thought this was gonna be cutesy, but this is straight up intense! I wonder how the eating portion of the story will tie into--
Tumblr media
ah.
Tumblr media
Gotta say, this style is one of my favorites. This is such a simple yet expressive way of drawing characters, distinguishing them and yet keeping it mildly realistic! It’s a delight to see.
Tumblr media
The resource scarcity realism is.,.. impressive. I wonder if the author based it off of a specific videogame or a ttrpg? I know TTRPGs aren’t huge in Japan, but this really does have fantastically recognizable RPG vibes.
Tumblr media
This is great, but I have to comment on the fact that (unsurprisingly) this is such a Japanese array of foods. It reminds me of an izakaya menu. Specifically the ‘thick-cut bacon’ bit - what is called ‘bacon’ in Japan is not bacon as Americans know it. It’s the same cut of meat, but it’s not cured nor smoked... It’s simply HAM. 😂
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shockingly, I really can sense that these guys are friends with just a few pages.
Tumblr media
What do you mean ‘noo’??? It’s literally a giant ass mushroom
Tumblr media
I think I can honestly this this is the point at which I realized I might just love Laios.
Tumblr media
you may not like it, but this is the ideal man. rabid and ready to cook anything he finds at a moment’s notice.
Tumblr media
IT’S A WOK. I THOUGHT IT WAS A SHIELD. HE’S CARRYING AROUND A POT ON HIS BACK. Incredible.11/10
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I do so appreciate the seasoned-adventurer energy here. She straight up said ‘oh huh this thing killed me once before! a traumatic memory! neat!’ and then got right back to it.
Tumblr media
Never have I wanted to create a character based around this whole concept more than I do now.
Tumblr media
oh I SEE. 😂

Rewatching Code Geass as adult, bc James convince should liveblog
Episode 1 reaction mode:
They already go hard with how imperialism n colonialism dehumanize. N the sorts atrocities happen.
To make message clear, they gonna keep hammer this in, huh.
Gonna be hard word some this tho.
Before - was watch video "we consume fiction wrong" - where main premise that not being able "turn off" brain - make impossible enjoy watch, when "better" analyze afterward
But am just like. Bro, the mecha anime with powers is do this thing right in your face tho.
"The right of kings" being literal symbolic power. That both the brittania empire hold n manufactured (making the power. CC. As experimental weapon.), n Lelouch- an anti-brittania ex-royalty use on side of colonized powers. To force their will onto others.
(Mixed messaging, yet on purpose. Not necessarily good logic but, is trying. Something)
The stripping n changing of names, to take away humanity (japan -> colony 11. Japanese -> elevens.)
Being lie / obscuring things ("am living a lie". Lelouch v brittania -> Lelouch just some guy -> later, his rebellion persona)
Making Brittania a mix of united states, u.k., n europe as a mega-superpower. N making the (u.k. inspired) monarchy, king-focused instead. Marking this series as a fight between major male figures - has already been setup.
The britannia soldier Suzaku from Japan, the anti-britannia rebel Lelouch of Britannia royalty. The whole parallel irony thing already setup.
Though the implications of a rebellion needing a colonizer from a private school, gifted The Right Of Kings (Geass. A word that mean a celtic oath must abide by) - to be able "change anything", is something the series gonna need contend with from now on...
And the alternate magical history being heavily based on U.S. occupation of Japan n E.U., post-WW2, is something am feel complicated about bc inevitably this influence gonna erase irl Japan's role in ww2 (the real life parallel) n they own colonies they had. The current assimilations of indigenous. To instead focus on dualism (twos) with brittania vs colony 11 (japan). Suzaku vs Lelouch. Anime political intrigue with magic n pew pews, that have interesting stuff say but major sacrifices in oversimplification already.
Am only say like. Lil bit of what was think. Cuz rest of thought is tangle words.
The ending theme is so nostalgic rozen maiden.

I finished osnf after almost 2 months and
You know that feeling when you finish a piece of media you really enjoyed, whether it be a show or game or book. And now its over and you can never go back and experience it for the first time again.
That's how I feel :,)
I made a post while I watched the whole thing, it's like if I liveblogged but I stuffed it all into one very long post. So it's kind of all over the place. But if you went through the episode you could pinpoint exactly when i added to it lol
spoilers under here
https://www.tumblr.com/safetyobstacles/733757650447335424/starting-o-segredo-na-floresta-now-im-either?source=share
thats the link to the post, its also just pinned to my blog until i start desconjuração
i would like to thank anyone who read my update post before i finished watching. and when they saw on EPISODE ONE that i was saying "dont take Thiago from me :,)". and nobody spoiled. that Thiago. dies.
:((((((((((((((((((((
also i got an irl friend of mine into ordem, she's watched the whole first series and is almost done with episode 2 of osnf. and her favourite character is Cris :) funny enough she recognized Rakin from league of legends but not anybody else
the fight against the deus da morte. SO COOL. THE CUTSCENE. bro the little buildup to the cutscene with the goo tentacles covering the screen. and the music. THE MUSIC. and then he went and hugged liz. and now she is old. and now she has no thiago. but at least she still has Gonzales' dog. probably.
the way Santo Berço died btw. ow. ouch. the imagery is gonna stick with me for a while. Cibele. he really did in Cibele like that. damn bro.
special shoutout to the Succ. rpg wouldnt be the same without it. and Felps for blindsiding me and then dying like 3 hours later.
also kinda crazy that cellbit can just keep pulling these random npc's out of his ass and making me care about them.
speaking of npc's, all of the Vulture's deaths were fucked but Murilo's made me extra sad idk why. his buddy bit him :(
i think my favourite scene outside of the liz, thiago, joui scene in the last episode, was the bit after they killed the big slug in the asylum. idk the pacing of it was just really cool to me, the drawing in the sludge and losing sanity without realizing. for me it set up this feeling of "you cant trust anything you dont know for certain about" for the entire rest of osnf.
that fucking house btw. i wanted them to leave that house the moment they got gregorio out of that room. i have a burning hatred for that house. i would like for that house to explode.
i want to put Arthur in a shoebox for safe keeping so that he may never get hurt again. Cesar too. Joui as well. and Liz.
ill probably take a week or two to mourn finishing this series before moving onto Desconjuração. which is a very fun word to type. probably will make another post like i did this time to put all my updates in as i watch it.
thanks ordem paranormal for injecting into my braincells i dont think ill ever be over you
dude im so sad about thiago you have no idea

Some of you have probably noticed that I havent made a liveblog post in a while. Well, thats because I usually read on the bus and during my classes and then I come home and summarize my thoughts on the 2-5 chapters I read after theyve marinated in my head for a little while, but unfortunately i appear to be incapacited at the moment so I cant do that. But because its been weeks and I dont wanna forget anything and I would very much like to finish this series soon, I'll try to read at home sometimes from now on. Since my brain is still a lil mush Im gonna do what I did for my last post, which is write down what Im thinking as Im reading instead of summarizing all my thoughts retroactively, except this time I have my german copy on hand so if I want to quote something it'll be a translation
Anyway, with all that said, welcome to my twisted mind, please enjoy my thoughts on A Court of Mist and Fury Chapters 40
Chapter 40
Ive been wanting to say this for a while now but i kept forgetting, but they translated 'winnowing' as 'den Wind spalten' ['splitting the wind'] and that is objectively so much cooler, shoutout to my gal Alexandra Ernst for that
Feyre being like "ugh, its so pathetic how these human guards think they could stand a chance against even one of us" hurts me so much you guys what have they done to my girl
Once again, its apparently perfectly fine if Rhysand doesnt tell Feyre anything "because she never asked" but if Tamlin doesnt tell her anything when she never asked hes the devil
Also once again, Feyre is perfectly not-triggered at Mor wearing a scarlet dress
Idk how to explain this, but Rhysand saying that Feyre is wearing a golden crown because "she looks so good with it, how could he not give her one" is somehow the perfect encapsulation of the hollowness of her High Lady title
Oh, of course three of the queens only showed up to watch the other two talk, itd be too hard to write dialogue if they actually participated in this important conversation
hello???? Feyre referring to humans as "your kind" ??? wth is going on
"every side bears some blame" hey rhysand ive got a question for ya. which side enslaved the other again
everytime the oldest queen does anything the prose feels the need to remind me of how old and wrinkly she is and its like, i get it, shes OLD
The oldest queen is spitting so hard rn, Im not even gonna question how they heard of the night court when Feyre, who lived closest to Prythian for many years, didnt know anything aout the individual courts prior to getting there herself, Im just gonna put her whole little monologue here: "Oh? [...] The High Lord of the Night Court asks that we join him so that we can save lives together? Fight for peace? And what about the lives that you have taken during your long, despicable existance? What about the High Lord who shrouds himself in darkness and destroys the mind of those who stand in his way? [...] We have heard of you on the continent, Rhysand. We have heard of what the Court of Night is capable of, what you do to your enemies. Peace? I wouldn't have thought that you - a man who enslaves the minds of others and kills them out of pure enjoyment - even know that word."
Anyway, she was spitting absolute bars and Feyre gets super mad about it and almost commits arson but manages to reign herself in and its like girlie, why are you so upset? one of the first things we find out about the night court in this book is that they apparently indiscriminately kill (or atleast torture) anyone who crosses the night court border without permission like theyre the fucking us government, i think the bad reputation is justified
Forgive me if I sound callous, but I have absolutely no sympathy for Rhysand flinching at the mention of Amarantha when Feyre didnt even use her name and is also talking about how she fucking DIED AT HER HANDS
God, I feel like I have something to say about every single line this post is gonna be like 10 thousand words long by the time Im done
So lets take it from the top; Feyre tries to convince the mortal queens to give them the half of the book by recounting to them how much everyone suffered under Amarantha and how she was gruesomely beaten to death and then revived, which is not a compelling argument to me, who actually witnessed all of that, much less these queens who have barely any context for anything shes saying right now
The oldest queen is like "you dont know anything about anything" which is true what the fuck does Feyre know about whats going on in the human world or even the fae world at large, and then Rhysand growls "dont you dare talk down to her!!" because shes passionate and speaking from the heart or whatever and its like, okay, shes still not good at politicking or even just basic negatioation and shes talking to a seasoned politician who old as fuck
Like, if Feyre was actually smart, she wouldve long since realized that she couldnt convince these queens to protect this little slip of land right up to prythians border and been like "okay, you dont wanna protect the land, but can you atleast organize an evacuation so you can atleast save the people" Sure, they definitely still wouldnt have agreed to that because its a sjm book and theyre written to be comically evil, but it would atleast demonstrate Feyre being a little savvy, because right now all we're getting is her being stupid and stubborn in a situation where she really cant afford that
god, im just now noticing how pissed off I am, its been bleeding into my commentary and its not gonna stop, Im sorry. wait no, if youre reading this youre probably looking for negativity, so youre welcome, actually
Anyway, Rhys also says that Feyre is a kindhearted soul looking out for people who cant defend themselves even though she definitely thought that those human guards were pathetic for wanting to defend themselves when she and the other fae were soooooo much more powerful and he definitely knows that because the mental bond is fully open during this meeting and he chastises the queens for being selfish and cowardly when its like, my brother in christ you are doing the exact same bullshit, but atleast the queens are defending a wholeass continent while hes defending one (1) city. and iirc that city ends up getting attacked and destroyed anyway so good job my guy
Theres something so oddly biblical about the story Mor is telling about Miriam, down to her name being Miriam
That island thats removed from time is such bullshit istg
Is it just me or have these bozos not actually explained what they even need the other half of the book for. theyre just like "we need to stop this war and we'd like peace between humans and fae" and its like cool, hows the book gonna help with that though
im sorry, feyre wants to punch that old woman in the face????
the chapter ends with Elain being like "I hope they burn in hell" and i get that, they just straight up said that they want to abandon a whole bunch of people (them included) to die if a war breaks out, but you cant say that the night court girlies are not also at fault for being so fucking bad at politics

🕎Kamehame-Hanukkah (5/8)🕎
It's Hanukkah, and that means Antiochus IV Epiphanes can go fuck himself, and it also means we're gonna talk about another Kamehameha from that popular anime, One Piece.
Wait, whaaaaa? The Kamehameha is from Dragon Ball, not One Piece! What in the wide world of sports is a-goin' on here? Patience, gentle reader. Allow me to explain....
In 2013, Toei produced a three-way crossover featuring two of its most popular anime franchises: One-Piece and Dragon Ball. Also Dream 9 Toriko was involved. If you're not familiar with that one, don't worry. You're not alone.
I watched it earlier this year as part of the 2023 Dragon Ball Apocrypha Liveblog, and it's not very good. The story was presented as Episode 99 of Toriko and Episode 590 of One Piece, so I don't know if the problem lay with the quality of those anime series in general, or if the special itself was just too unwieldy for its own good. There's like 900 characters in the thing and very few of them actually get to look cool.
Anyway, the plot involves characters from all three franchises teaming up to hunt down some sort of life-force-stealing monster fish. I think the idea here was to have a sea creature, which is typical for One Piece's pirate cast, but also the creature is delicious when properly cooked, which ties into Toriko's action gourmet bit. And they needed somebody to kick the thing's ass, which is where our pal Goku comes in.
The fish turns out to be insanely powerful, and when Goku resorts to a Spirit Bomb, it just gets stuck in the monster's mouth. So he has to push it harder, kind of like when he turned Super Saiyan to finish deploying the Spirit Bomb against Kid Buu.
Tumblr media
So while the B-listers keep it busy, Goku charges up a Kamehameha and turns Super Saiyan 3 at the same time. I've only ever seen one episode of One Piece, but I can promise you this is the best one. Unless Cell guest-stars in another episode. That'd be pretty cool.
Tumblr media
Goku lets it rip and this forces the Spirit Bomb down the monster's gullet, and it detonates the bomb and... doesn't destroy the creature. Instead it just expands violently and all the energy blasts out of its mouth.
Tumblr media
Which is... pretty wild when you think about it. The monster's dead, no worries there, but usually when Goku kills a guy they get totally vaporized. This is just a contrivance, of course, since the payoff to this battle is that all the good guys are going to eat this monster fish for dinner. Obviously, they can't eat it without a body, so there we are.
Still, that makes this thing one of the most durable enemies Goku has ever fought. And while this crossover was disappointing as a whole, I can't help but appreciate the spectacle in the finale.

Ascension of the cybermen time!!
I'm dedicated to getting series 12 finished tonight, I want to start flux so bad
My liveblogs under the cut
The story of brendan is so much cuter than the actual timeless child story man. Maybe there's an alternate universe where the timeless child was found by someone as loving as that Irish couple
I looove scenes where companions find out the doctor knows about horrifying events in humanity's future. I wonder what the fam would think of the toclafane
Mmhm even though the doctor doesn't like weapons, she's still used to having plenty on hand when it comes to the cybermen. Even that abandoned theme park had a doomsday bomb on hand
I looove the cyberdrones, theyre so funky. Best thing since the cybermats 😄
Wooahh stunts.
God I love the doctor in this. I think she's so scarred from Bill, she desperately wants them to just leave and go far away from the cybermen. In that last mission with Bill, she thought everything would be fine, then she thought she could save Bill, then thought she could fix her. She knows better now. But I think she need to believe in herself more, because we all know what happens when the doctor assumes she'll lose...
Oohh it's Ashad
This is such a serious scene but the doctor runs so silly I love her
"I used to do this a lot and people got mad" story of your life i think 😆
Now what do you have ginger humbugs for girl 🤭
Sorry Ashad I can say with certainty that you will not be bringing about the end of humanity fhdjkddls
"Have to bill you for therapy at this rate" 😭😭
The brendan story as an allegory for the timeless child is so fascinating to me purely because there's parts of it that just....aren't quite right. Like the loving parents and the cliff fall being more malicious instead of accidental. Iirc the story was created by Tecteun so some of the changes make sense (the loving parents- tecteun sees herself as a saviour) but why the other changes? Just to make it make more sense? To seem more unremarkable?
A fully functional abandoned ship.....if its sounds too good to be true, it probably is
Graham is lowkey so doctory. "Are you gonna keep going on about that" "every hour, on the hour", "level 139, always been my favourite level." Over explaining his weird little phrases. And that reaction to being flirted with lol. It's all very doctor.
I feel bad that this Ko Sharmus guy ends up dying for nothing basically
Aw Yaz is very Doctory too. She has the doctors optimism.
I love that the brendan story is like. Everything is perfectly normal. Until you look a little too closely. Or watch a little too long. But even if someone had watched the whole thing, if theyre not familiar with earth customs, they might just assume everyone who retires from the garda gets their memory wiped. But even so, if they're paying attention then theyll probably find it a bit odd that brendan had aged but his loving father and supportive superior officer (who are now both torturing him and wiping his memory) haven't aged at all somehow. It's such a good allegory for the story of tecteun and the other higher ups exploiting the timeless child for endless life (thus lack of ageing) then betraying them after initially posing as someone to be trusted
GALLIFREY
Kicking my legs and clapping rn LOOK WHOS HERE
OH. I forgot it just ends right after he appears aahhh dbjsksmd what a cliffhanger

I'm done with Danganronpa: Ultra Despair Girls, and I do mean that in more ways than one.
The weird thing is that by Danganronpa standards this game is shockingly well put together. Looking at this from a game design perspective there wasn't anything glaringly insane - the controls were generally okay, the different gun abilities were well thought out, and the various different gameplay modes all fit together into a satisfying gameplay loop. Not impressive by any means - I was particularly irritated by the Monokumas AI during the arcade sections - but mainline Danganronpa's gameplay loop is a fucking mess and this is positively sensible by comparison.
No, the problem with this was all in the actual story. The plot makes so many bizarre leaps in logic and makes so many bizarre decisions in the name of getting from point A to B that it's a complete mess, the tone is all over the place even by Danganronpa standards, and just. Kotoko. Just Kotoko.
It's a shame because this could very easily have been a good game and has a lot of redeeming features - Toko and Komaru's relationship throughout the game is one of the whole series high points for me - but not anywhere near enough for me to actually recommend playing it.
Anyway, as much as I was playing this specifically to get to V3, I'm gonna take a bit of a break before I play/liveblog that (although this queue is like a week long so it might pick up immediately afterwards, who knows). I'm going to Megacon this weekend where I bet I'll get spoiled on that at the very last second after almost three years of avoiding spoilers.
Anyway sorry to all the people who followed over this that I ended up hating the game, fingers crossed V3 will fare better. I mostly liked Trigger Happy Havoc and loved Goodbye Despair so we'll see.

ender’s game - 4/5 a very chewy read. more unsettling than I anticipated
the seven dials mystery - 3/5 a little disappointing in the climax
frankenstein - 5/5 so much better and so different from what I'd been led to believe by popular media. I'm a frankenstein snob now
the phantom of the opera - 5/5 also very different from popular understanding, and much more interesting. I'd really love there to be a faithful mini series adaption
the turn of the screw - 2/5 v longwinded and wordy, and a bit of a let down in the fright department
maus - 5/5 harrowing
lang fairy books (green, grey, crimson) - 3/5 enjoyable but got a bit repetitive after a while. I listened to these from many different readers, so that added to the experience
marlene - 4/5 really liked how frank she was, not only with herself but others too
a dark night’s work - 2/5 too much description, not enough dialogue, and took too long to get to the Event. kinda a drag tbh
the flying girl - 5/5 completely loved this. worth it just for chapter nine
the cruel painter - 3/5 unsettling and unintentionally hilarious
the water dancer - 4/5 beautifully written and v interesting story but kind of odd pacing
the thief - 4/5 already did a whole liveblog on this series so yeah. really enjoyed the myth story telling in this
the queen of attolia - 5/5 wild from start to finish. gen is insane. "I can steal the magus" gen that's just kidnapping sit down
the king of attolia - 5/5 probably my favorite of the series. really liked seeing an outside perspective to the consequences of qoa
tea with the black dragon - 2/5 v disappointing. the guy didn't even turn into a dragon at the end
the fall of the house of usher - 3/5 v atmospheric and unsettling
the sittin’ up - 3/5 lots of fun characters
a conspiracy of kings - 4/5 the pov changes was a interesting choice
true grit - 5/5 v engaging read even though I knew the story already
thick as thieves - 4/5 a little slow, and I would've been angrier longer at the end if I were costis
the house on mango street - 5/5 unexpected gut punch
return of the thief - 5/5 such a satisfying ending,
my sister lives on the mantelpiece - 4/5 borrowed from libby on a whim, and it turned out to be incredibly sad, and I did tear up at least four times
the thanksgiving play - 3/5 only listened to the audio adaption so it wasn't the true experience but. wild
old souls - 3/5 really went to a different place than I was expected. liked the art style but kinda a chewy read too
Film/tv
the last of us (s1) - 5/5 went into this knowing almost nothing about it and really enjoyed experiencing it
the mandalorian (s3) - 3/5 been so long since I watched it I kinda don't remember what happened but at least they got mandalore back. yay
mad max fury road - 5/5 knew it was good, didn't know it was gonna be that good. easily one of my top movies now
shrek 2, 3, and 4 - 4/5 overall, the all made me laugh
kung fu panda 3 - 5/5 the most beautiful one I think?
the sixth sense - 5/5 knew the twist going in but still incredibly well made movie
the others - 4/5 really enjoyed the double twist. gave me chills
the phantom of the opera - 3/5 really weird editing
black adam - 3/5 had a very different vibe from other superhero movies
instant family - 3/5
oh my ghost - 3/5 the only time I've cared about characters having sex
exclusive fairy tale - 3/5 could've used a murder ngl
gifted - 4/5 much deeper than I expected
the quiet girl - 4/5 really got to me in the last ten seconds
high seas (s1-3) - 3/5 liked the sister relationship, esp in s1, but s2 was too dramatic, and s3 was completely unnecessary
shutter island - 3/5 also knew the twist going in but it got worse. v interesting visuals and atmosphere
tom jones - 3/5 I would've made tom wait a year
mission impossible: rouge nation - 3/5 kind of a slow burner ending
mission impossible: fallout - 3/5 they were a little Too smart in this, but really enjoyed the final act
mission impossible: dead reckoning part i - 5/5 actually really enjoyed all of it
beef - 3/5 absolutely wild show. really well acted tho
the bourne legacy - 2/5 unnecessary and kinda weird
jason bourne - 2/5 jason bourne should not be using an smartphone. also had to step away after they ****** *****

only murders in the building (s3) - 4/5 really enjoyed everyone in this season
once upon a time (s3-s5ish) - 3/5 everyone is so Dramatic and Serious about everything but it's actually very silly
titanic - 5/5 actually a really good movie?? who knew
fair play - 2/5 watched this to see something bad happen and you know what. it did
practical magic - 3/5 darker than I expected. gave me tonal whiplash
one royal holiday - 2/5 enjoyed watching aaron tveit doing an ?? accent
sweeny todd - 3/5 helena bonham carter. carried this tbh. also they didn't have to do johanna like that
the christmas bow - 4/5 genuinely enjoyed this?? would actually watch again
home alone - 3/5 wild.
my happy marriage - 4/5 surprisingly really enjoyed this. I liked how understated the romance was
last holiday - 3/5 a really sweet movie actually
it’s time for him to come home for christmas - 3/5 actually really sad in some parts. and there was actually chemistry between the leads so it bearable to watch
the boy and the heron - 4/5 really bizarre but in cool fantastically way that I could really get into. somehow more beautiful than other ghibli movies. will need to watch again
the little mermaid (2023) - 4/5 liked this more than I thought I would. but disney really thought that we (me) wouldn't notice that they used two different horses interchangeably in the same scene??
polite society - 4/5 amazing leading lady. super enjoyable watch, no notes
attack on titan finale - 3/5 thank GOD this is finally over. zeke's death was really unsatisfying to me tbh but at least he died. and I wish armin had gone harder on eren on his bullshit bc good lord was he stupid. it sucks that the end is the weakest part of the story but at least it's over and levi was there. amazing animation tho
across the spiderverse - 5/5 actually amazing?? does anyone know this??

Okay i finished The Tale of the Body Thief. The most surprising thing to me was that i rather liked it. Like i was led to believe that the quality takes a huge nosedive after QotD but i thought this was entirely readable. Its plot is kind of poorly structured and it has several boring stretches, but the prose itself stays good and it has many incredibly good beats and beautifully written segments. Lestat's characterization is completely consistent with the earlier books, genuinely don't understand readers who feel he's massively ooc here. I would say that the first three books in the series are good books with flaws, and this is a pretty bad book with many great parts.
I LOVE Claudia's presence in this story and her 'haunting' of Lestat. Every loustat scene, even though there are only few of them, is mind-alteringly good. Some of the sections that deal with Lestat's existential crisis and feeling of emptiness and struggle with the concepts of good and evil are among my favorites in the series so far. I also actually liked the body jumping shenaningas, i don't give a shit that it's goofy. Where the book falls apart in my opinion is that it often feels narratively incoherent and aimless (i guess this is an editing issue), and even though it has strong underlying themes i felt they were exceedingly poorly executed. Rice's understanding of sexual violence is atrocious, like a mix medieval christianity, incel forums, and the worst harlequin books. There is a constant theme of consent and violation from beginning to end but it's rarely presented in coherent and nuanced way. There IS some good and interesting writing here concerning it (i'm gonna make a longer post about Lestat's deranged ideas of consent later) but overall Rice's internalized misogyny, casual racism, misconceptions of sexual assault and rape apologism, and general tasteless treatment of the subject actively dragged the story down for me.
Btw i've officially made a decision i'm going to take one for the team and really going to read the whole series so you will have to see my liveblogging and complaining for god knows how long
