tsukishima has a knack of deciding whether or not something was ever unattainable. he showed that part of him first regarding his position in the volleyball team and now it’s become a habit of his to weed out all his possible pass/fail in hobbies.
it was simple, really— if he knew something was out of his league or would amount to be a waste of time and effort, then he wouldn’t bother trying it out. it wasn’t rocket science or skepticism like his friends made it out to be, he was just logical.
yamaguchi understands it perfectly but in all his years of seeing his friend apply this concept to numerous sorts of things, he never thought he could do that too to a person.
“how are you gonna assume it’s a rejection when you haven’t even tried?” he says, clearly exasperated from trying to cross over a point.
tsukishima sighs, “it’s useless— why try when you know the outcome?”
“but you don’t know the outcome for sure, now do you?” yamaguchi smiles, firmly putting the discussion to a close when he sprints ahead, not letting his companion talk any further.
for tsukishima— it wasn’t that simple. there’s always going to be a 50/50 chance on what you’d say next and it only varied from either being positive or negative.
he usually didn’t like to read into things but this was you he was taking into account and that was enough to make his hands a bit sweaty.
you were so kind to him even when he felt like he wasn’t deserving, just so nice and considerate every time he had the pleasure of talking to you.
in his eyes, you were golden. potential of a good future seaped in your words and that was enough to make you a living dream.
he sighs again, sitting on the bench as daichi called for a timeout.
the past hour they’ve been running laps all over the campus and the only thing making it harder is how even if his knees were on the verge of giving out, you were still the person he’s thinking of first.
he lets out a breath, “how much longer?”
he didn’t really expect an answer, hearing his teammates almost fall over from exhaustion and panting, he figured they were too busy to reply.
“here—” you say, a pitying smile on your face as you extend your arm to him to hand him a water bottle. “two more laps, i think,”
he blinks at your voice, immediately straightening his figure at your sudden sight and he bites back the urge to curse when he realizes how he haggard he must’ve looked.
“i’m replacing shimizu for now since she had an errand to run,” you tell him, your shoulders softly bouncing along with your words.
he nods, unable to find the voice to keep up with a conversation.
you smile awkwardly, “i’m gonna go give the others some water, feel free to rest for a few minutes.”
tsukishima saw how you hesitated to leave and there was a compelling urge to hit himself in the head at his obvious stupidity.
he didn’t know what it was but this conversation certainly felt too different from your previous ones; maybe you were finally getting tired of his useless banter— or maybe you were finally getting tired of waiting around for him to make a move.
either way, he was probably gonna have to do something about this soon, huh?
