In this hypothesis we consider two economies, one being an advanced economy like the United Kingdom and the second being a developing economy like India. In our the preliminary research it is to be found that many countries have been investing more and more in urban areas then the rural areas. In countries like UK around 10% of the budget is planned for investment whereas in India around 6% is spent on rural and urban development. However in India in the urban areas the daily wage rate is Rs 282 as in 2011-12 and in the rural areas the wage rate is Rs 122. Whereas in the United Kingdom the wage rate remains stagnant across all the regions at a minimum of £7.36. Around 20% of the migrants shifted from rural to urban areas because of employment and work opportunities. Hence it can be said that there is an increase in income inequality with more people going to the urban areas with more jobs in the unorganized sector and with education playing a vital role to reduce poverty and increasing employment rate. The Urban Poverty Report 2009 by the Government of India 2009 finds that across all the Indian states that poverty is negatively correlated with the level of urbanisation with large and medium cities having lower indices of poverty than small cities in India. A World Bank study finds that poverty is more widespread in very small towns than in metro cities. There has been study’s that suggest with the large city population, growth rate of the city and the city poverty rate has a strong correlation with city inequality. Evidences suggest that many developing countries like India have opened to trade more recently leading to liberalization of the economy. However liberalization has not led to reduction in wage inequality and wage inequality has increase with respect to the skill one has to offer. In India, the driving forces of high wage rates appear to be growth of urbanisation, a higher share of the non-agricultural sector in income, employment rate and less stagnation in urban and rural areas. States like Kerala, Punjab and Haryana have been a prime example of this with higher labour productivity, less rural and urban difference. Hence these are some of the variable that should be considered to reduce the income disparity which exist in India. Even though many of the rural migrants might move to urban cities the concept of inequality still exist whereas this term isn’t realised in the United Kingdom.
