nothing much to say here other than i finished reading the comic! not my favorite of the IDW Godzilla series but i enjoyed it, the artstyle goes hard as usual and the fights were awesome!

i was originally gonna make a godzilla in hell art but with shin instead (i was also listening to persecution of the masses when drawing this lmao) but i didnt find motivation to draw shin as much i as i wanted to, shin is awesome and he fits in hell as this monstrous evolving flesh demon!

Okay so, I really love the IDW Godzilla comics. I have most, if not all, of them. And I gotta say, my personal favorite is probably Godzilla in Hell. I've read it a few times and every time I feel like I'm getting something new from it.

It's set up in a really interesting way where you can definitely read it as one ongoing story with Godzilla exploring deeper and deeper levels of hell, but it's equally easy to read as an anthology depicting entirely different stories where each writer has their own interpretation of Godzilla and Hell and how the two would interact.

There are scenarios where Godzilla is trapped in an endless, futile battle, unable to die but equally unable to kill his opponent. Scenarios that loop back on themselves creating an almost groundhog day scenario where Godzilla's mindless rampage can never end because he lacks the capacity for restraint. A story that puts Godzilla at the centre of a battle between heaven and hell, which ultimately serves as a natural conclusion to all the times various aliens have tried to weaponize Godzilla or humans have tried to create their own mechs to fight back. It only achieves mutually assured destruction, Godzilla doesn't have sides and the worst thing you can do is get his attention. It even shows that, in the end, even hell itself, even greater gods than you can imagine, can't contain something like Godzilla. He's a pure force of destruction, and he will always, no matter how long it takes, keep moving forward.

Actually in that aspect it kinda reminds me of the Doctor Who episode Hellbent, which I won't get into here but if you know you know.

Basically, Godzilla in Hell is a really solid read, it keeps the dialogue minimal and lets the monsters (and more importantly, the artists) shine, and it's equally good if you're looking for some Kaiju smashing goodness or some thematic resonance. Highly recommend.

shin godzilla and minus one are rlly interesting comparisons bc one is harkoning to back to the original in the sense that its reacting to a recent tragedy and how it affected it people, vs minus one which is a retrospective look on the horrific event that inspired the first one instead. yet both at their heart criticize the government that wont help its people after the fact, and remind us that is up to Us to help each other
