THE GOOD NEWS Revelation 21:4 "He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” 📖 Revelation 21:1–8 continues the progression of events which came after the end of the tribulation: Christ's return to earth (📖 Revelation 19:11–16), the defeat and destruction of those who war against Christ (📖 Revelation 19:17–21), the incarceration of Satan (📖 Revelation 20:1–3), the millennial reign of Christ (📖 Revelation 20:4–6), the release of Satan and the nations' final revolt against God (📖 Revelation 20:7–10), and the great white throne judgment (📖 Revelation 20:11–15). Here we see the creation of the new heaven and the new earth. Upcoming verses describe the New Jerusalem (📖 Revelation 21:9–27). BEYOND SAVING SOULS Mature Christians know life brings tribulation and trouble as well as blessings and comfort. Pain and sorrow are inevitable in this life. Even Job, a righteous man in God's sight, experienced personal pain and sorrow. Nevertheless, he retained faith in the Lord and the assurance that he would ultimately be resurrected and would see his Redeemer on the earth (📖 Job 19:25–27). Christians, too, look beyond suffering and sorrow to the eternal day, when "what is mortal may be swallowed up by life" (📖 2 Corinthians 5:4). Noticeably absent from the New Jerusalem are tears, death, mourning, crying and pain (📖 Revelation 21:4). Pain, sorrow, mourning, the passing of friends and loved ones, and dying are all harsh realities of this life, but they will be over once and for all when we take up residence in the New Jerusalem. No wonder the apostle Paul regarded his death as gain (📖 Philippians 1:21). Revelation 20 described the total and complete defeat of all sin and evil. This verse describes the reality which comes about when God has enacted His judgment. All wrongs are made right, all sin is separated, and all suffering of all kinds is gone. GRAFTED IN Paul is building on the previous verse in which he compared Israel to a tree. In this analogy, he uses versions of the Greek term rhiza, which suggests the life-sustaining part of the plant from the soil surface on down. If the root of the tree is holy, then the branches of the tree will be holy. Paul was making the point that Israel will eventually return to their first nature as the set-apart people of God by coming to faith in Christ. Now Paul begins a sentence meant for Gentile Christians. He writes that some of the branches of Israel's tree have been broken off. In this context, that seems to mean they have been deliberately pruned away because of their refusal to trust in Christ for salvation. He describes Gentile Christians as being grafted in among the other branches on this metaphorical tree. The Gentiles now receive nourishment through those holy roots, just as believing Jewish people do. Paul is describing a common practice of olive tree farming. To mingle plants, caretakers can transplant branches from one tree to another. Paul's take on the practice seems unusual, however. It was unlikely that a farmer would graft a wild olive branch onto a cultivated olive tree. However, that may well be Paul's point. God's choice to graft the "wild" and unspiritual Gentile people onto the tree of God's grace to the Israelites also seems unlikely. And yet, this is exactly what God has done. Paul's if or then statement concludes in the following verse with the "then" part in which he warns Gentile Christians not to be arrogant. HAVE MERCY ON THOSE WHO DOUBT This verse emphasizes a distinction between those who sincerely "doubt," as opposed to those who are rebellious and arrogant: the "scoffers" who are not really seeking truth (📖 Jude 1:10). Jude encourages his readers to show mercy to those who have doubts, perhaps doubts sown by the apostates concerning the truth. This was a key danger presented by Jude, that the presence of false teachers was like a "hidden reef" among the members of the church (📖 Jude 1:12). The key attitude Jude presents here is mercy—a caring compassion—instead of a judgmental anger or rejection. Strong believers should deal with doubters patiently and with love (📖 Ephesians 4:2). Harsh criticism only drives doubters farther away from the truth. Some doubters might be on the verge of trusting in Jesus as their Savior, but they have intellectual questions. Believers can answer those concerns (📖 1 Peter 3:15–16) if they extend enough mercy to those sincere seekers. ♥ Remember God doesn't despise your doubts, He will gently lead you into truth & show you who He is. This verse opens with a statement many find difficult to understand: "He is the propitiation for our sins." The Greek word Hilasmos can be translated as "propitiation," "expiation," or "atonement." All of these refer to settling, satisfying, or repaying a debt. In other words, Jesus is the only sufficient payment for the sins of humanity. Without this payment, we are left separated from God. Notice that verse 1 described Jesus also as our "advocate." This means that Christ not only speaks to God on our behalf, but He also pays our debt for us, as well. John was clear that this power of Jesus' sacrifice was made available to all people of the world. These words resemble 📖 John 3:16: "For God so loved the world…" This doesn't mean that every person will be saved. It does, however, mean that Christ's sacrifice was sufficient to pay the debt for anyone who comes to faith in Him (📖 Revelation 22:17). There is a distinction between Christ's power to (potentially) save all people and those who actually come to Him for salvation. CLING TO GOD FOR SAFETY Many of the Jewish leaders wanted to follow Jesus, but they failed to turn to him, “for they loved human praise more than praise from God” (📖 John 12:43). Fear of man is a deadly curse of the sin nature and makes the world go around in the kingdom of darkness. It is the fear of man that makes people compromise on what they believe. It is the fear of man that causes men and women to look to others and public opinion to know what to think about things. The fear of man has not only kept some people out of the Church but has also driven some into the Church under false pretenses in times when the Church was strong. But the fear of man will always prove to be a decoy for anyone who does not truly learn to root his or her identity in Christ; and his or her adoption as a child of God. This person can trust “in the Lord” and be “kept safe.” The trap of the “fear of man” is one that rarely lets go of those who fall captive to it. Trusting in the Lord will keep one out of it because, as Christ said, “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell” (📖 Matthew 10:28). To fear the Lord is to trust him. To trust him is to be kept from the snare. STAND IN AWE!!! 📖 Psalms 33:8 “Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.” Let all the earth fear the Lord. Not only Jews, but Gentiles. The psalmist was not a man blinded by national prejudice, he did not desire to restrict the worship of Jehovah to the seed of Abraham. He looks for homage even to far off nations. If they are not well enough instructed to be able to praise, at least let them fear. There is an inferior kind of worship in the trembling which involuntarily admits the boundless power of the thundering God. A defiant blasphemer is out of place in a world covered with tokens of the divine power and Godhead: the whole earth cannot afford a spot congenial for the erection of a synagogue of Atheism, nor a man in whom it is becoming to profane the name of God. Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. Let them forsake their idols, and reverently regard the only living God. What is here placed as a wish may also be read as a prophecy: the adoration of God will yet be universal. 📖 Luke 22:42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” We can learn much of Jesus' submission to the Father from His prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane just before His crucifixion. This comes from the heart of a man described as meek and lowly of heart. His words paint a vivid picture of what was going through His mind. Sometime during His life, He had likely witnessed a crucifixion, but even if He had not, He certainly had heard one described. As quick of mind as He was, He could clearly envision what lay before Him. Undoubtedly, He anticipated great bodily pain, understanding Isaiah 52:14 to predict He would suffer pain as nobody else ever had. In addition, He had to bear the pressure of resisting the urge to break faith and sin under the burden of the guilt of all mankind's sins that would come upon Him. He also knew He would have the embarrassment of all the indignities heaped upon Him, knowing full well He was innocent. He had to battle demons throughout His ordeal. Perhaps the most dreaded burden of all was knowing that He would be cut off from God and have to bear everything alone. Yet He did it! Jesus—by faith—consciously chose to submit to the Father based on His knowledge of the Most High ( written by John W. Ritenbaugh). BASK IN THE AWE OF GODS POWER & LOVE! Anyone, everyone, who puts their faith in Christ and his death for their sin on the cross will be justified—will be made right with God—and welcomed into God's family. If that is all true, and Paul had staked his life on it, then what is there to be ashamed of? Paul continues that this salvation from God by faith in Christ is for the Jew first and also for the Greek. In this context, "Greek" is similar to the meaning of "Gentile," as a references to all the non-Jewish people in the world. Why for the Jew first? Paul will spend a lot of time on that concept in this letter. Jesus said simply that "salvation is from the Jews" (📖 John 4:22). Paul's letter will show that God prioritized the Jews first in revealing that all can be saved by faith in Christ. Though they rejected that message as a nation, many Jewish people did indeed trust in Christ for their salvation, starting with Jesus' 12 Jewish disciples. This explains in part why Paul often began his work in a new city by preaching in the Jewish synagogues before moving on to preach to the Gentiles (📖 Acts 13:5). It's true that Christ sent Paul to preach to all the nations, but He also commissioned Paul to preach about Him to the children of Israel (📖 Acts 9:15).
