So it occurs to me that the movie God’s Not Dead is a(n unintentional?) response to Friedrick Neitzsche

Mr. Neitzsche was a philosopher active in the late 1800s who wrote a response to a prior book (also written by himself) in The Will to Power affirming life in response to the death of God and nihilism;

“If we affirm one single moment, we thus affirm not only ourselves but all existence. For nothing is self-sufficient, neither in us ourselves nor in things; and if our soul has trembled with happiness and sounded like a harp string just once, all eternity was needed to produce this one event – and in this single moment of affirmation all eternity was called good, redeemed, justified, and affirmed.”

tldr in order to acknowledge that you were happy you must acknowledge the butterfly effect of the universe that led to you being happy

ANYWAY

This was in response to him coining the phrase directly (in German) in his book  Die fröhliche Wissenschaft (The Gay Science; sometimes translated as The Joyful Wisdom (mistranslation of Wissenschaft (Science) as Weisheit (Wisdom) [though if we’re going to be pedantic here it technically would be a better cognate with scholarship as it’s referring to a search for knowledge, not necessarily a major school of science] or The Joyful Science, though the first is most accurate) in 1882 (with second edition in 1887), a very poetic book that was important to Mr. Neitzsche

the phrase literally being Gott ist tot or God is dead 

now while this in itself pings off of Lutherian atonement, the hymn Ein Trauriger Grabgesang (A mournful dirge) and the poem Le Christ aux oliviers (Christ at the olive trees) (which in itself pings off of a chapter in Siebenkäs (Seven cheese) called The Dead Christ Proclaims That There Is No God)

Mr. Neitzsche (and his friend Mr. Heine) popularized the phrase

and I find it very funny that God’s Not Dead has ironically made the statement that you do need a god, the antithesis of Neitzsche’s philosophy that you can still be happy without a god

People do not talk enough about how amazing Lae'zels voice acting is. Devora Wilde put her whole ass pussy into some of those lines but nobody pays attention and calls laezel one note and angry. But have you listened? Have you heard her voice shake as she cries "what good - this heart of stone - for it to be shattered?" Have you heard the conviction where she declares that Vlaketh has sinned against her? Have you listened to the fear in her voice, the slight tremble when she is talking of becoming a mindflayer and the way that she has utter awe in her tones when she experiences something that is truly spiritual to her?
