Give Thanks to the LORD, for He is Good
1 Thank the Lord because he is good. His love continues forever. 2 That is what the people the Lord has saved should say. They are the ones he has saved from the enemy. 3 He has gathered them from other lands, from east and west, north and south.
4 Some people had wandered in the desert lands. They found no city to live in. 5 They were hungry and thirsty. They were discouraged. 6 In their misery they cried out to the Lord. And he saved them from their troubles. 7 He led them on a straight road to a city where they could live. 8 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his love and for the miracles he does for people. 9 He satisfies the thirsty. He fills up the hungry.
10 Some sat in gloom and darkness. They were prisoners suffering in chains. 11 They had turned against the words of God. They had refused the advice of God Most High. 12 So he broke their pride by hard work. They stumbled, and no one helped. 13 In their misery they cried out to the Lord. And he saved them from their troubles. 14 He brought them out of their gloom and darkness. He broke their chains. 15 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his love and for the miracles he does for people. 16 He breaks down bronze gates. And he cuts apart iron bars.
17 Some became fools who turned against God. They suffered for the evil they did. 18 They refused to eat anything. So they almost died. 19 In their misery they cried out to the Lord. And he saved them from their troubles. 20 God gave the command and healed them. So they were saved from dying. 21 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his love and for the miracles he does for people. 22 Let them offer sacrifices to thank him. With joy they should tell what he has done.
23 Others went out to sea in ships. They did business on the great oceans. 24 They saw what the Lord could do. They saw the miracles he did. 25 He spoke, and a storm came up. It blew up high waves. 26 The ships tossed as high as the sky and fell low in the waves. The storm was so bad the men lost their courage. 27 They stumbled and fell like men who were drunk. They did not know what to do. 28 In their misery they cried out to the Lord. And he saved them from their troubles. 29 He made the storm be still. He calmed the waves. 30 They were happy that it was quiet. And God guided them to the port they wanted. 31 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his love and for the miracles he does for people. 32 Let them praise his greatness in the meeting of the people. They should praise him in the meeting of the elders.
33 He changed rivers into a desert, and springs of water into dry ground. 34 He made fertile land salty because the people there did evil. 35 He changed the desert into pools of water and dry ground into springs of water. 36 He had the hungry settle there. They built a city to live in. 37 They planted seeds in the fields and vineyards. And they had a good harvest. 38 God blessed them, and they grew in number. Their cattle did not become fewer.
39 Because of disaster, troubles and sadness, their families grew smaller and weaker. 40 He showed he was displeased with their important men. He made them wander in a pathless desert. 41 But he lifted the poor out of their suffering. And he made their families grow like flocks of sheep. 42 Good people see this and are happy. But the wicked say nothing.
43 Whoever is wise will remember these things. He will think about the love of the Lord. — Psalm 107 | International Children’s Bible (ICB) The Holy Bible, International Children’s Bible® Copyright© 1986, 1988, 1999, 2015 by Thomas Nelson. Shine through
Tumblr media
Whatever you spend your time on. Whoever you spend your time with.
The more time you spend? The more you will take on the character of the things and people you spend your time with. Without even trying, that will fill you up. And that will shine through.
It’s a universal truth about us as human beings.
When you see someone who’s always angry. You know that they’re spending their time with someone or something that’s filling them with anger. Because that’s what’s shining through.
When you see someone who’s always afraid. You know that they’re spending their time with someone or something that’s filling them with fear. Because that’s what’s shining through.
And that’s what we see in today’s first reading. Where Moses is spending a big part of his time with God. Moses’ time with God is filling him up. Because that’s what’s shining through.
The people who are overwhelmed by what’s shining through Moses? It’s not that they haven’t seen this happen before.
You and I see this all the time. And they’re no different. It’s just that, for them and for us, we’re not used to that shining through.
What they’re used to, what we’re used to shining through? The usual garbage. Stuff like anger and fear, pride and resentment, doubt and uncertainty.
Because, for them and for us, that’s how we (and the people we’re around) spend our time. With stuff like anger and fear, pride and resentment, doubt and uncertainty.
But that’s not how Moses is spending his time.
How is Moses spending his time? Talking with God.
Let’s be clear, this is nothing special. Moses isn’t spending 15 years in silent prayer alone in the desert. Moses isn’t doing an activity-filled “90 days to a more holy you” program. Not that those things are bad.
But what Moses is doing is simple. Something anyone can do. Even you and me.
Moses is just talking with God. A lot. About everything.
The good, the bad, the big, the small, the happy, the sad. The stuff that gives you hope, the stuff that breaks your heart. Everything.
And what’s shining through Moses? God’s patience. God’s power. God’s peace.
The things that come from talking with God. A lot. About everything.
It all comes from that simple truth about us as human beings. What and who we spend our time with will shine through.
Today, keep an eye on you. Watch what’s shining through.
And if it’s not God’s patience, God’s power, God’s peace? You know what to do.

Quote
'But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins' -- he said to the man who was paralyzed -- 'I say to you, rise, pick up your bed and go home.' And immediately he rose up before them and picked up what he had been lying on and went home, glorifying God.
Luke 5:24-25 ESV (2016)

🙃 Regular reminder that while Hozier has amazing love songs, he is ALSO very outspoken about his leftist politics, specifically anti-fascism, anti-racism, reproductive rights, Palestinian rights and more.
Take Me To Church and Foreigner’s God are scathing critiques of organized religion, specifically the Catholic Church and the colonization of Ireland.
Moment’s Silence is about oral sex but it’s ALSO about how that specific sexual act is often distorted to a show of power rather than that of love.
Nina Cried Power is an homage to various (mostly Black) civil rights activists from the US and Ireland and a call to follow their path.
Be criticizes anti-migrant policies and Trump and his ilk.
Jackboot Jump is about the global wave of fascism and about protest and resistance.
Swan Upon Leda is about reproductive rights and the violent colonial oppression of Ireland and Palestine.
Eat Your Young is about the ruinous way the 1%/capitalism and arms dealers prioritize short-term profit over everything else to the detriment of the youth/99%
Butchered Tongue is about Irish and other indigenous languages being suppressed and erased by imperial powers.
If any of the above surprised you, please, please delve deeper into Hozier’s music, you’re missing such an important part of his work.

The Cross - 1 Corinthians 1:18
The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God.

A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing: For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe; His craft and pow’r are great, and, armed with cruel hate, On earth is not his equal.
Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing, Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God’s own choosing: Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He; Lord Sabaoth, His Name, from age to age the same, And He must win the battle.
And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us; The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him; His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure, One little word shall fell him.
That word above all earthly pow’rs, no thanks to them, abideth; The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him Who with us sideth; Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also; The body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still, His kingdom is forever.

We Preach Christ Crucified
22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom; 23 But we proclaim Christ crucified. To the Jews it is a cause of offense, and to the Greeks it is foolishness; 24 But to those who are called--both Jews and Greeks--Christ is God's power and God's wisdom — 1 Corinthians 1:22-24 | A Faithful Version (AFV) Holy Bible, A Faithful Version © 2020 A Faithful Version.
