Animated movie of the day: Over the moon (2020)
Death isn't a stranger in the world of animation, as all the jokes of Disney moms can attest to. Grief, however? While not uncharted territory, most western animated movie protagonists seldom discuss their feelings on the matter as anything but a footnote of their emotional journeys. So to have this film try and do that in a traditional animated musical is one brave but lofty goal.
Directed by Glenn Keane, most renowned for animating characters like Ariel from The Little Mermaid(1989), the film takes cues from those old animated classics to approach Chinese mythology in the modern world. Namely, how a girl called Fei Fei idolizes the story of the goddess of the moon Chang'e and her beloved Houyi. As her father is about to get married for a second time and bringing along a half brother with them, she decides to meet her idol in the moon in hopes she can help her bring her mother back, for Chang'e always kept faithful to Houyi even after his demise millennia ago.
If this sounds like a strangely depressing set up, you'd be surprised how much the film does to create an adventurous narrative with it. It's full of humor, imaginative visuals and explosive musical numbers with vibrant colors, cute companions and chases of childlike imagination. Doesn't hurt Chinese culture is depicted with breathtaking detail and accuracy (which makes the more jarring half the cast is composed by Korean-American actors but let's ignore that for now).
However, the foundation is still composed of two stories of people who never moved on from the death of a loved one. And while it's clear one stands to contrast with the other to reinforce the emotional impact, there's parts when they do trip on each other's feet, with goofy shenanigans in the second act that clearly exist just to pad out the run time.
That said, this doesn't detract from either that climax, nor the beauty of the message: to let go so you can love again.

Moon Landing Conspiracy Theories
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the fourth blog post, I am going to discuss one of the most popular outer space conspiracy theories – That the moon landing in 1969 was fake. Americans stepping foot on the moon has been one of America’s greatest achievements to date, however that achievement has been questioned by many. All arguments claiming that NASA faked the moon landing have all been debunked but there are still some people that believe the moon landing was faked. One reason many have come to this theory is due to the USSR taking commanding lead in the space race.
Let’s discuss a brief history of how this theory came to be. Through the years, there have been many wars and competition. After World War II came to an end, another war erupted – the Cold War. This rivalry was between the United States and the communist Soviet Union. Soldiers in the United States and the Soviet Union did not go into battle during the Cold War. However, the two nations antagonized each other through weapon buildup, an espionage – the use of spies, propaganda, and military coalitions. During the Cold War, many events did occur, the Korean War, the creation of NATO, the Berlin Crisis, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Vietnam War. Another huge event to happen during that time was the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union.
The Space race was essentially just a giant competition between the United States and the Soviet Union. During the Cold War, the two nations competed in every arena – including space. It began in October 1957 when the Soviets launched Sputnik I, The World’s first artificial satellite into space. The successful launch created fear and chaos among the American public. The Soviet Union then launched Sputnik II, this one carrying a dog named Laika. Sputnik III and even Lunik III, to photograph the dark side of the moon, were also launched. All of Russia’s success would cause the creation of NASA. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration was created for aerospace research and the space program. Their first objective was to launch a manned vehicle into Earth’s orbit. However, the Soviets took the lead again in the space race when they sent Yuri Gagaruin, and he successfully became the first man to enter the Earth’s orbit. Over a year later in 1962, the Americans were successful in sending John Glenn and he became the first American to enter the Earth’s orbit.
Tumblr media
All this history is what led up to the famous moon landing conspiracy theory. After the successful mission accomplished by John Glenn, The United States President at the time, John F. Kennedy, announced the Apollo Program. This program pledged to put a man on the moon. Now that we have gone over the history that led up to this theory, let’s discuss the facts. The United States and the Soviet Union were in a constant rivalry that lasted almost five decades. The Soviets at the time were “winning” the Cold War when they had success in sending the first artificial satellite into space. They had even more success with sending the first dog into space and sending the first man into Earth’s orbit. The United States was very nervous about all this success. However, with the Soviets taking the lead in the Space Race, the United States still ended up winning when they did the unthinkable – sending men to the moon. Now many were very proud of this achievement, but others were not convinced that it really happened.
Tumblr media
A lot of people believe the moon landing was faked so that the United States could “win” the space race by sending men to the moon first. Others claim the moon landing was faked due to their being no stars in any of the Apollo pictures. However, this was due to the manned mission to the moon being during in the sunny daytime. Any stars would not be seen at the time. Another claim that the moon landing was faked was because in the videos from the Apollo mission, the flag planted on the moon was waving. They claim the flag would have not been on the moon since there is no breeze on the moon. However, this was also debunked as it was waving because when the astronauts were planting it, they had to rotate the pole back and forth to plant the flagpole into the lunar soil, causing the flag to ripple back and forth.
Tumblr media
Until we return to the moon again, there will also be theories and claims that the moon landing never actually occurred in 1969. However, from the Apollo missions there are over 8,000 publicly available pictures, hours of videos, and audio recording of the Apollo missions. We even have a moon rock the astronauts brought back to Earth. These rocks brought back have also been verified as lunar by labs around the globe. One final coup de grace in the moon landing being faked conspiracy is when Apollo 11 crew went to the moon, they installed an instrument that allows us to reflect lasers from it to allow us to measure the distance to the moon. If the moon landings were faked, we would not be able to do this. After reading all of this, do you still believe the moon landing was faked and the NASA program created one of the biggest conspiracy theories known to man today? Or do you believe we were successful in sending men to the moon?

REVIEW
The Wingmen by Adam Lazarus
Fascinating factual account of two famous men who became fast friends as Marine pilots during the Korean War.
One of the reasons I was drawn to this book was that it reminded me of one of my maternal uncles telling me a few stories about his time as a soldier in Korea. Additionally, I wanted to find out what these two men, a professional baseball player and an astronaut, might have in common. The book was well researched, the writing flowed and was easy to read, and the men came to life on the page.
I actually started a list of “similarities” and “differences” and realized that the main thing John Glenn and Ted Willams had in common was the trust and admiration that formed between the two men while flying missions together. They both had planes damaged, limped back to base, and survived to return home. Ted returned to play professional baseball while John opted to stay career Marine in various positions till his last as the first astronaut to orbit the earth. There was a lot to take in from how they were raised to how they were buried.
I didn’t know a lot about either man before reading this book but came away with an understanding of and appreciation for the good things they both did. I felt I got to know them and learned a bit more ab the Korean War, too.
NOTES:
1) My father was in WWII, my uncle fought in Korea, I wrote letters to men in Vietnam, and have been through the Gulf War in Saudi Arabia – this book had me thinking about how war impacts the soldiers, their families, and the country the war takes place in.
2) I googled after finishing and found out that Ted’s rather controversial son died a couple years after his choice of burial for his father and chose the same for himself.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensginton Publishing – Citadel Press for the ARC – This is my honest review.
5 Stars
BLURB
The untold story of the unique fifty-year friendship between two American John Glenn, the unassailable pioneer of space exploration and Ted Williams, indisputably the greatest hitter in baseball history. It was 1953, the Korean War in full throttle, when two men—already experts in their fields—crossed the fabled 38th Parallel into Communist airspace aboard matching Panther jets. John Glenn was an ambitious operations officer with fifty-nine World War II combat missions under his belt. His wingman was Ted Williams, the two-time American League Triple Crown winner who, at the pinnacle of his career, had been inexplicably recalled to active service in the United States Marine Corps. Together, the affable flier and the notoriously tempestuous left fielder soared into North Korea, creating a death-defying bond. Although, over the next half century, their contrasting lives were challenged by exhilarating highs and devastating lows, that bond would endure. Through unpublished letters, unit diaries, declassified military records, manuscripts, and new and illuminating interviews, The Wingmen reveals an epic and intimate portrait of two heroes—larger-than-life and yet ineffably human, ordinary men who accomplished the extraordinary. At its heart, this was a conflicted friendship that found commonality in mutual respect—throughout the perils of war, sports dominance, scientific innovation, cutthroat national politics, the burden of celebrity, and the meaning of bravery. Now, author Adam Lazarus sheds light on a largely forgotten chapter in these legends’ lives—as singular individuals, inspiring patriots, and eventually, however improbable, profoundly close friends.

For Republican presidential hopefuls, the road to the White House in 2024 goes through Iowa, New Hampshire, and, apparently, the Asia-Pacific.
In the past week, three likely presidential candidates—Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, and former National Security Advisor John Bolton—jetted off to Asia for separate trips that are widely seen as a bid to burnish their foreign-policy credentials and hard-line tack on China ahead of the 2024 election season.
For China watchers and politicos alike, the trips reflect a new reality in American politics: To get to the top of the pack, you have to be tough on China. It’s a rare bout of concern over foreign-policy issues in political primaries that are nearly always dominated by domestic concerns.
“I think China will play a significant role in 2024, and I think many candidates will be trying to out-hawk each other,” said Carrie Filipetti, executive director of the Vandenberg Coalition, a conservative organization that works with elected officials and political candidates on foreign-policy issues.
If (most) Democrats and Republicans in Washington agree on one thing these days, it’s that the United States has to take a harder posture on China, boost support for the independently governed island of Taiwan, and prepare for a new era of competition with its top geopolitical competitor in Beijing.
“In part because the American public is so concerned about China, there’s almost a competition underway—at least in Congress—for who can be tougher on China,” said Bonnie Glaser, an expert on the Indo-Pacific region at the German Marshall Fund think tank. “Nobody wants to be seen as soft on China, and so Taiwan is a big part of that.”
That stance is seeping its way into campaign season, with Youngkin’s and Bolton’s separate visits to Taiwan this week and DeSantis’s visit to South Korea and Japan—two of Washington’s most important allies in the Asia-Pacific. Bolton, seen as a long-shot contender for the presidential ticket compared with the front-runners, former President Donald Trump and DeSantis, spent most of his career in the national security space. But DeSantis’s and Youngkin’s jobs as governors are by nature focused much closer to home, giving these trips more political weight if they formally decide to run for president.
Both Republican governors used their visits to deepen ties with Washington’s Asian allies and demonstrate their support for Taiwan, with Youngkin establishing a new Virginia-Taiwan trade office and DeSantis discussing new international trade partnerships for Florida with South Korean and Japanese officials. DeSantis in Tokyo took a hard-line stance on China and underscored the importance of U.S. commitments to Taiwan.
“[Chinese President] Xi Jinping clearly wants to take Taiwan at some point. He’s got a certain time horizon,” DeSantis told Nikkei Asia, before adding: “Ultimately, what China respects is strength.”
In elections past, presidential front-runners sought to showcase their foreign-policy bona fides with foreign trips but primarily focused on Europe, namely with Barack Obama’s 2008 visit to Germany and Mitt Romney visiting the United Kingdom in 2012. So far, no Republican presidential hopeful has visited Europe in the same context, even with the war raging in Ukraine—perhaps reflecting how Ukraine policy is more controversial among parts of the Republican Party than China.
DeSantis and Youngkin have joined a slew of politicians across the country pushing legislation and executive actions at the state level to counter China’s influence and economic leverage. This includes policies to ban the popular social media app TikTok from state devices, block Chinese companies from buying farmland in their states, and halt joint business ventures between U.S. and Chinese companies.
“It’s underreported how much governors are responsible for policies that can help improve national security by countering China at the state level,” Filipetti said.
Bolton, meanwhile, is slated to meet with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and address the annual meeting of the World Taiwanese Congress during his weeklong trip to the region.
Taiwanese officials publicly say they welcome the increased attention from Washington. “We respect all kinds of proposals from our friends to increase the defense capability of Taiwan,” Tsai Ming-yen, the director of Taiwan’s top intelligence agency, told Taiwanese lawmakers ahead of Bolton’s visit.
But the slew of high-profile visits has incensed Beijing and ratcheted up military tensions in the Taiwan Strait, a fact that at times puts Taiwan in a precarious and diplomatically awkward position. In its latest pressure campaign, Beijing deployed dozens of fighter jets and navy vessels by the island early on Friday. In March, a former Trump national security advisor, Robert O’Brien, said during his own visit to Taiwan that arming Taiwanese citizens with AK-47s could help serve as a deterrent.
“I think that Taiwan did not see that as helpful,” said Glaser, who noted that the island has some of the world’s strictest gun laws. “There is a bit of a problem with people who go to Taiwan who really aren’t well prepared. They want to be helpful, but they are not always.”
Then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi won rare plaudits from her rival Republican lawmakers last year when she became the second House speaker to visit the self-governed island since 1997. Current House Speaker Kevin McCarthy met Tsai in California earlier this month, as a separate bipartisan delegation of U.S. lawmakers simultaneously visited Taiwan to showcase U.S. support for the island. The United States adheres to the so-called One China policy of maintaining formal diplomatic relations exclusively with Beijing, which views independently governed Taiwan as its own territory. But Democratic and Republican administrations alike have sought to boost U.S. military and political support for Taiwan in recent years, despite lacking formal diplomatic relations. A small number of progressive U.S. lawmakers have voiced fears that this wave of support for Taiwan and increased military support could serve to undermine the One China policy and increase the risk of a war with China over Taiwan.
Still, the slew of visits to the Asia-Pacific by presidential hopefuls shows that Washington’s increasingly hawkish stance on China is likely here to stay, even with the roiling tensions in the Taiwan Strait and irrespective of who wins the presidency in the 2024 election.
DeSantis’s and Youngkin’s Asia tours come as American public opinion takes a sharp turn against China. Just 15 percent of Americans hold a favorable opinion of China, according to Gallup, marking the lowest percentage that the polling organization has recorded since it began tracking this opinion in 1979. Americans have also grown increasingly concerned about the security of Taiwan, with the Pew Research Center estimating that almost half of U.S. adults now view China-Taiwan tensions as a “very serious problem.”

Glenn H. Shima Solon Glenn H. Shima, 95, of rural Solon, died at his home, Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2022. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 30, 2022, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City with burial to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Glenn’s memory to Camp Courageous, Solon American Legion or the Solon Fire Department. To share a thought, memory or condolence please visit Gay & Ciha Funeral; and Cremation Service website at www.gayandciha.com. Glenn was born Aug. 19, 1927, the son of Victor Arthur and Bessie (Cilek) Shima on the family farm near Solon, Iowa. He attended country school until the eighth grade in 1941. Then off to Solon High where he graduated in 1945 at the age of 17. Glenn met the love of his life while in high school, he was a senior and fell for this freshman girl, named Irene Novotny. He was proud to tell you about one of the ways he showed his love for her during school. In class one day while sitting behind her, he dipped her braided hair in his ink well. As Paul Harvey would say, now you know the rest of the story, this couple would be later married on June 19, 1950, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City. A marriage that would thrive for 61 years and 243 days until Irene’s death. He stayed on the farm after graduation and, in his words, “worked like a beaver” for his folks. In 1951 Glenn enlisted in the Army and proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict. Returning home, Glenn and Irene worked on their farm they bought in 1960, raising their family but also working off the farm. Irene worked various jobs in town, retiring from the City of Iowa City. Glenn, who had developed master carpenter skills along the way, was in high demand from area contractors for his fine craftsman work. After many years of construction, he worked for the U of I Maintenance and retired. Glenn cherished the many friendships he developed over the years from his days in the army, his many work sites in his construction days, his classmates and neighbors. Glenn enjoyed traveling the world with family and friends, a frequent visitor on Princess Cruise Lines! He was a proud 64-year member of the Solon American Legion, a member of both St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church of Iowa City and St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Newport Township of Johnson County; and loved tooling around with the love of his life in the front seat with the Classy Chassy Cruisers. Glenn truly was a man of strong faith, loved his family, understood what it meant to be a farmer, and was always a friend you could count on. His family includes his two daughters and their husbands, Kayleen and Mike Gardner, and Connie and Dick Friedl; two granddaughters and their husbands, Emily and Dan Frett, and Kelly and Blayne Willadsen; and three very near and dear great-grandchildren to Glenn, Sadie Irene Willadsen, Macie Ann and Marshall Scott Frett. He was preceded in death by his parents, his dear wife, Irene, and sister, Betty Shima. Glenn would like to leave you with this, “It’s a great day when the sun shines.” Everyone would remember him saying this to you!
