I went to watch both events for the Gintama Ato no Matsuri!!
The afternoon event via live-viewing in the cinemas
The evening event inside the actual venue, Ryogoku Kokugikan~
IT WAS HONESTLY THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE!!!
(2023 is also my 15th year as a Gintama fan so what better way to celebrate than attend the matsuri!!!!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hihi we used the penlights inside the live-viewing theater too.. hey most of the ppl in our row were using it too okayyy😂😂 It was so much fun!!!
ofc nothing beats the experience of watching it LIVE inside Ryogoku~🥹🥹
Tumblr media
3Z Anime announced!!!! Everyone was like majiiiii????
They kindly asked us not to post any spoilers on social media until the evening event ends, so I kept mum about it XD
Tumblr media
Upon arriving at the Ryogoku, my friends and I took pics of our matching Sonjuku ita-bags!! 🥹🥹 (Mine is the Takasugi one hehehe)
Tumblr media
So many ppl!!
Then I went to pickup my preordered goods, which I'll post later!! XD
Tumblr media
Outside Ryogoku~
Tumblr media
Inside Ryogoku~
Tumblr media
With my sibling wearing our matsuri shirts and sukajan~
We won the tickets during the Advance reservation lottery so we got pretty good seats~ マス席 in the first floor and facing the front! My friends were seated on a different row T^T
On to the event~ (A lot of screaming and crying XD)
I already knew most of what was gonna happen since I watched the afternoon event so I thought my hype would be dampened??? But the emotions just kept flowing!!!!!!!!!! 😭😭😭 (Tho ngl I wished they unveiled the 3z anime in the night event instead... I was expecting another bomb to drop actually hahahah xD)
The atmosphere inside Ryogoku... everyone's so passionate!!! You could feel the love not only from the fans but also from the seiyuu and bands as well!!! Aaaa I love Gintama and it's fandommm 🥹🥹💞💞
Never watched One Piece but the hype inside the venue and Kitadani's energy was so high it made me sing along too, idk how I managed to do it cuz I barely know the song😂😂 they went all out with this even parodying the OP of One Piece and the seiyuu mimicking the strawhat pose😂
Then the 生アフレコ went a trip down the memory lane🥹🥹 Makes me wanna rewatch everything all over again 😭
I started getting emotional when ChicoHani started singing ヒカリ証明論 (Kiheitai tapos Bansai death scene talaga..mashaket po mga mamshie...😭)
And サクラ舞う暁に..it's my fave ChicoHani song okayyy Chico shouting Matsuri ja Matsuri jaaa🌸🌸🌸 So fun to sing along with the crowd!!! Almost everyone switched their lights to pink!! one brain cell~ XD
Their surprise was the Samurai Heart cover!!! 😭😭😭
ChicoHani's gntmと出会わせてくれた song, Pride Kakumei!!! When the Honeyworks guitarist shouted "saikou da saikou" waaaa the hype!!!!! Crowd went crazy!!
Otsu-chan so cute I didn't expect the fox at all (Gintama always subverts expectations so true even for events like these x3)
Toshi always up for anything riding the Thousand Sunny Sadaharu-Eli ship hahahah And Sakaguchi-san!!! 🥹🥹
Then 生アフレコ again~!! XDDD
Surprise was KUROKO's special appearance (with Suzuken as Murasakibara and Nakai-san as Imayoshi!! Chiba-san's side comment: なんかイチャイチャする 😂😂😂😂)
SuzuKen funny he said he could hear Kensho Ono from the Kuroko mascot hahahah
plus GINCHAAAN (for the evening event)
It was so adorable how Sakaguchi-san took a pic of Gin-san and Sugita on stage... He really loves Gintama, ne (The whole cast loves Gintama!! that alone makes it so special)
Sugita's side comment: he wants Oguri Shun to join too hahahaha
DOES so cool!! Everyone switched their lights to red when DOES started their set list~
It's also no secret that Wataru-san loves Gintama sm, he mentions it in his SNS accts frequently🥹🥹 ワタルさんかっこ良かった...有難う! Crowd shouting Wataruuuu Bravo!!! XD
The SPYAIR covers gosh 😭😭😭 I almost cried listening to the Wadachi cover 😭😭😭 (I did cry when I rewatched it through Abema haha 😭😭😭)
From the band's message in the end, it was apparent that SPYAIR really wanted to attend but alas they have no vocalist yet 😭😭😭
The highlight of the event for me was Yama-chan's surprise appearance 🥹🥹 LITERAL CHILLSSSSS I mean... THE KOICHI YAMADERA...
Apparently, Yama-chan never attended events like these and Ato Matsuri was the first one. That alone just made me.....🥹🥹🥹😭😭
is Gintama that special he agreed to make an appearance 🥹🥹😭😭
Or did Higuchi-san (producer) really splurge their budget on him ahahahah
We were joking that they must have spent most of the special guest budget on Yama-chan that's prolly why no other guests appeared 😂
And gosh that man has range.... I also learned that Yama-chan voiced Donald Duck from Kingdom Hearts..!!! That's why his animal and nature dubs (from the special Matsuri manga) are on point 😂😂😂😂
He can sing too (He sang JPN version of Prince Ali and Circle of Life) and had a duet with Hirano Aya (Nobume VA) for the Yakuza game 😭
Koyasu-san was a no-show as usual (I had high hopes since he attended the Isekai Oji-san seiyuu event at Anime Japan last year) He had a voice message tho, saying his ponpon was in pain (basically he had a stomachache) 😂😂
And then there's Sugita's closing message 😭😭😭
That even though gntm has ended 4 years ago, he hasn't forgotten about Gintama
That he'll be Sakata Gintoki until he dies..no, even if he dies 😭😭😭GURL I GOT SO EMOTIONAL!!!
Then he says "Chinko"!! how very Gintoki!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And finally the Ginpachi-sensei anime which will be part of a series of projects for Gintama's 20th anniversary (which will last until 2026!!!) I am so excited 😭😭😭😭
Tumblr media
AAAAAAA MY HEART AND WALLET ARE READY
As Suzuken said 終わらないね銀魂ァァ
Tumblr media
Thank you so much Ryogoku~ See you again in the next Gintama Matsuri!!!

Personalization Prompt #2 – ShoheiAkagi
So, for the reader appreciation day of the event, I used the second personalization prompt for the lovely @shoheiakagi! As always, their blog is definitely a recommended K blog for any fans and the person themselves is wonderfully supportive! I hope they’ll enjoy 😊
BLACK: what face claim from an anime, comic book, or cartoon do I associate with you?
Tumblr media
So, though you’re Lenalee Lee in The Ever Young, when it comes down to the image of you I have in my mind, the closest face claim I could come up with was Nana Komatsu. I don’t know much about the character themselves, I’ve mostly just seen the amazing artwork of the manga, but she has the colouring and the sort of elegant but sweet ‘good girl’ look to her I imagine you having.
WHITE: what flame type and box weapon do I think you’d have in the khr!verse?
Hmm, this was a fun one to think about for you, especially since KHR isn’t a universe I’ve pictured you in a lot, as it’s not one of the fandoms we share in common! I do think you’d be a Cloud Flame user though, with your box weapon animal being a pair of swans, one white and one black! I’m using both just imagery and the spiritual meaning behind swans and I think it’s a pretty cool box weapon for a cool person 😊
RED: what aesthetics do I associate with you?
High heels clicking along crowded city sidewalks. Head held high, confidence and elegance. Imagination and longing for something beyond just this one life. Pastels and sweetness combined with wicked grins. Angels and demons, the juxtaposition of good and wickedness. The draw of a danger. Remembered love. Freshly manicured fingernails. Cocktails. Velvet and steel, softness and strength. Concerts, packed full of people, the energy at an all time high.
BLUE: what are three songs I’d put on a playlist for you?
DATE WITH THE NIGHT, yeah yeah yeahs
BEST OF ME, morningwood
I LOVE MYSELF TODAY, bif naked
YELLOW: what fictional world out of all my fandoms would I picture you in?
Of course, the answer is really obvious here in that it’s K Project! Not only is it the fandom we share and talk most about, but before I even put it up on my fandom to write list, I was following your K blog.
GREEN: who would I pair you with out of all my fandoms?
For KHR, it’s Dino. For K Project, it’s Shouhei. For Nanbaka, it’s Uno. For Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun, it’s General Furfur. For Bungou Stray Dogs, it’s Tachihara. For Servamp, it’s Mikuni. For Saiyuki, it’s Gojyo. For Eyeshield 21, it’s Hiruma. For Ronin Warriors, it’s Sage. For Kekkaishi, it’s Makio. For GetBackers, it’s Kazuki. For Black Cat, it’s Jenos. For Karneval, it’s Tsukitachi. For Gangsta., it’s Worick. For Bleach, it’s Renji. For Naruto, it’s Kakashi. For Deadman Wonderland, it’s Yo Takami. For Ouran, it’s the twins, both of them. For Durarara, it’s Izaya. For Yu Yu Hakusho, it’s Yusuke. For Gintama, it’s Takasugi. For Mystic Messenger, it’s Saeyoung. For Ikemen Revolution, it’s Dalim. For Blush Blush, it’s Eli. For Date Warp, it’s Linds. For Hatoful Boyfriend, it’s Kazuaki. For The Outsiders, it’s Dally. For Class of the Titans, it’s Neil. For Ultimate Spider-Man, it’s Flash. For Gravity Falls, it’s Stan. For The Mighty Ducks, it’s Portman. For The Covenant, it’s Pogue. For Jungle Fury, it’s R.J. For Ninja Storm, it’s Hunter. For Mystic Force, it’s Xander.
PURPLE: what gif reminds me of you?
Tumblr media
PINK: if you were an AU, what type of AU would you be?
Just because I have an AU inspired by your ideas on this, it’s definitely a delinquent! AU with strong bad boy meets good girl romance vibes.
RAINBOW: if i were to write a khr sequel, following Tsuna’s demise, and could only use my reader’s as characters, who would you be?
I see you as the next head of CEDEF. You stand apart from the family, but are a strong and supportive resource for them whenever you’re needed and your intelligence and good leadership skills allow you to supervise and recruit people into the division.

Hijikata/Tae & Loid/Yor
Yes, another random couple comparison meta post from yours truly. This time, we will be noting the similarities of Hijikata x Tae with Loid x Yor from Spy x Family. This is something I have discussed with @arirna (who I thank for early feedback on this post) a few times over the last couple of years, and then most recently with @suchine-toki, so this meta post is dedicated to both of them!
Tumblr media
SPOILERS AHEAD for Gintama and Spy x Family if you are unfamiliar with one or both of the series.
HijiTae is one of the earliest ships I became utterly devoted to, resulting in comparisons to similar ships ever since then. I can’t help it; I used to do the same with Bulma and Vegeta of Dragon Ball Z, who were my first ever OTP.
I started reading Spy x Family early in 2019, pretty much when it began serialization – much thanks to @arirna for his manga recommendations! I immediately liked it, and as the story progressed, we both realized something about Loid and Yor: they had That Dynamic. The HijiTae Dynamic. Now, we’re very biased toward HijiTae, but then @suchine-toki mentioned also seeing a strong HijiTae similarity in Loid and Yor, as well, so that confirmed the dynamic from a more objective viewpoint. We don’t just have HijiTae permanently engraved on our brains – there IS a certain dynamic to be found in other ships. It’s almost challenging to narrow it down to a handful of tropes. Suffice to say, you just know it when you see it, when it all feels familiar.
Now, let us unpack the similarities:
Note: I’ve fallen behind on the SxF manga, and I just recently caught up with the anime, so I’m using various SxF character bios for information. This is not an in-depth analysis, but rather a general one to generate ideas and discussion.
Tumblr media
HIJIKATA and LOID Fans may instinctively connect Loid and Gintoki instead because of their main character status, but Loid actually has more in common with Hijikata than he does with anyone else in Gintama, and vice versa. This doesn’t mean you can’t envision Gintoki as Loid, or another favourite MC in Loid’s shoes. By all means, go for it. Fanfic and fanart open up the possibilities. I’m simply saying that in terms of basic commonalities, Loid and Hijikata can shake hands more confidently than any other two characters within their respective series. Hijikata may be rougher around the edges and Loid can be more charming as part of his work, but they have many things in common:
They’ve both had a traumatic childhood, losing both of their parents and other important family figures (I don’t know too much about Loid’s past yet other than the part concerning his mother).
They take their jobs seriously and work hard to ensure complete success.
They are strict on subordinates or others under their tutelage for good reason.
They serve under a higher authority figure (Kondou and Handler).
They both have nicknames – Demon and Twilight – with reputations for being not only skilled but also austere and dangerous.
They are capable of undercover missions. Loid, obviously more so, but Hijikata has done some undercover work, too.
They both have a colleague obsessed with them in different ways: Sougo and Fiona.
They both have a colleague who also serves as a friend, foil, and comedic relief: Kondou and Franky.
They both have an enemy in the brother of their love interests: Sougo again, with Mitsuba, and then potentially Shinpachi with Tae in the fanon realm (except I don’t believe Shinpachi would be as extreme as Sougo); for Loid, it’s Yuri with Yor.
They have been left speechless by Tae and Yor for different reasons, usually as part of comedy scenes.
They both smoke or have smoked before, as @suchine-toki reminded me here (thanks again!).
They are frequently the Straight Man in comedy scenes, questioning the bizarre events happening around them, although Hijikata is likelier to participate in the weirdness now and then compared to Loid, whose weirdness – to people around him – is more grounded in how impressed people are by his mind. Not that people aren’t impressed with Hijikata’s mind, lol, but Gintama fans will understand best what I’m getting at here (because sometimes even Kondou is embarrassed by Hijikata, and that says a lot!).
Tumblr media
TAE and YOR Yor has quickly become iconic with an instantly recognizable outfit that has inspired many a crossover/AU fanart for other series. Since there aren’t nearly as many Tae fans in comparison to Yor’s, you might be wondering what on earth could they possibly have in common? The answer is: a lot more than you initially thought, I’d bet!
They both lost their parents at a young age and had to raise their little brothers by themselves.
They both can’t cook and are notorious for creating toxic meals by chance.
They both have brothers who are very attached and protective of their older sisters. Shinpachi isn’t as extreme as Yuri, though, lol.
They both had shoulder-length hair as children (a very basic similarity, but you’ll see why I mention it in the pics below).
They both work ordinary jobs (hostess, office worker), but have other jobs/lives (Deva, assassin).
They have similar personalities: kind, smiling, polite…
…But they also have explosive tempers when provoked, making them frightening figures in their own right. Tae is also more cunning than Yor, I’d say.
They are both known for being physically very strong, especially at moments where they need to protect others or themselves.
They both have nicknames, such as Boss Lady and Queen of Kabukicho (Tae) and Thorn Princess (Yor).
They’re both skilled in their chosen weapons of choice (naginata, knives/ice picks).
Others look up to them as mother/older sister figures, such as Kagura and Anya.
They both have a colleague/friend that is occasionally antagonistic toward them depending on the context. For Tae, Sacchan tends to play that role, as well as Ane at Snack Smile. In Yor’s case, we have Camilla. Yet, we have seen them cooperate with Tae and Yor when it counts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
HIJI/TAE & LOID/YOR Now we come to the heart of this post: the similarities between Hijikata x Tae and Loid x Yor. Given that one ship is considered more canon and widely accepted than the other, what is it that unites them in terms of dynamic and possibility? Let’s take a look:
Personality Contrast: It’s clear they each differ in personality except for when it comes to those that are important to them. We see how Loid and Yor have the same goals concerning Anya. Hijikata is utterly devoted to Kondou, and Tae stood up for Kondou before a corrupt Shogun, so Kondou is like Anya’s equivalent in this context. Tae and Yor are viewed as bright, cheerful people in contrast to Hijikata and Loid’s seemingly cold, stoic natures – yet we’ve also seen both men display passion for subjects that interest or provoke them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Frightening Figures: This goes without saying. Individually, all of them are scary in their own right, but together? Yikes! Okay, that was cheesy, but you get my point. Loid and Yor are feared for different reasons, but put them together, and they become extremely fearsome, especially when it comes to protecting Anya. Same with Hijikata and Tae, who are already feared by many people, and together, they would be a fearful power couple. (Incidentally and ironically, both Tae and Hijikata fear ghosts.) It’s also worth noting that Hijikata and Loid are often left stunned by Tae and Yor’s feats of strength, and are sometimes on the receiving end, lol.
Tumblr media
Relationship of Convenience: This is obvious with Loid and Yor; they have entered a marriage of convenience for both of them in order to carry on with their covert operations. For Hijikata and Tae, a more comedic example is in the Time Skip arc when it was revealed that Hijikata was actually the father of Tae’s baby (if you don’t know Gintama, it’s too much to explain this arc right now, lol). Despite the circumstances, Hijikata was willing to take on the responsibility of raising the child, with or without Tae. If this arc was serious and something like that actually happened, I can imagine both Hijikata and Tae entering a similar relationship of convenience in order to raise their child together. They were both willing to give up what they had in order to give their fake baby a future (again, non-Gintama fans, if this all sounds bizarre, well, it’s supposed to be).
Now, in SxF, Loid and Yor’s relationship of convenience is central to the main plot, and I’m sure they will inevitably move toward a real, genuine love behind that relationship before the series’ end. In Gintama, it’s too late for anything really, and Sorachi didn’t handle his romance all that well (too complicated a subject to get into) by the end, but given the significance of the moments Hijikata and Tae did have, and their devotion to tradition, I imagine they would’ve made a good couple who can stand on equal footing with each other.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cooking Skills: Loid appears to do most of the cooking than Yor, and I can imagine Hijikata sharing in the responsibility to make up for Tae’s notorious “skills.” Also, Hijikata’s mayonnaise obsession might be all that steels his stomach against Tae’s meals. Currently, Loid still passes out from consuming Yor’s meals, but there is a possibility of him building an immunity and being able to handle her cooking in the future. Yor takes steps to improve her cooking knowledge, and Tae has done the same with a cooking class in the past. Anyway, the point of this section is that the cooking dynamic is virtually the same for each ship.
Conversations: Both have had more in-depth conversations with each other than surface-level interactions. Think Loid and a tipsy Yor in the park, and Hijikata and Tae at Snack Smile in the Yagyuu arc. When the comedy and the rarity of their interactions pass, these two ships can actually have good conversations with one another, confiding when necessary and influencing the other in a positive way.
--
Anyway, that’s all I have to say about Hijikata/Tae and Loid/Yor for now. I’ll be glad to hear of more similarities that I probably missed. Like I said, I’m not up-to-date on the SxF manga, so I don’t know it as well as I know Gintama, but I think I managed to cover most of the basics. Still, I’m always up for friendly discussion concerning these two ships and their similar dynamic.

Video Games for Mental Health - AI: The Somnium Files
Tumblr media
~Resist, allow your heart to take you! Never let this merciless world erase you! Passing down the light of the torch to guide you, And you shall be bathed in light!~
When it comes to reading visual material, one would usually think picture books. In the case of pop culture fans, there’s Western comic books and manga. But there’s a whole other medium that has gotten a lot of exposure since the start of the 2010s’ - visual novels. While there’s many notable VNs to discuss, I want to take a look at Team Zero Escape’s/Spike Chunsoft’s AI: The Somnium Files (AI is pronounced as “eye”) franchise due to its focus on finding connections and how messy the process can be.
This will largely be spoiler-free because discussing everything that happens in both games will take forever.
AI: The Somnium Files, created by Kotaro Uchikoshi (who’s most famous for creating the Zero Escape and Danganronpa series), is a murder mystery starring special detective Kaname Date and his AI partner, Aiba, who takes the form of Date’s left eye. The two have to find a serial killer, the New Cyclops Serial Killer, who’s plucking eyeballs off of people they murder. Date finds out one of the victims was a woman he knows and discovers that a young girl has the supposed murder weapon in her hands. Along the way, Date and Aiba meet a variety of people who help and/or hurt their investigation. To get to the truth, Date goes into people’s minds and dreams with the help of Aiba. There are a lot of twists as there are multiple routes and endings that all come together in one wild package.
There’s also a sequel that just came out in 2022 - AI: The Somnium Files -nirvanA Initiative-. The story takes place 6 years later after the 1st game. The premise goes as this - months after the events of the 1st game, the right half of a corpse was found. 6 years later, the left half of the same corpse was found with no decay at all. It’s up to 2 new protagonists, Mizuki (who is a major supporting character in the 1st game) and Ryuki Kuruto, alongside their own AI eyeball partners, to find the truth about the half body killings. While this is happening, something called the Nirvana Initiative is looking to cause trouble for the public.
I discovered the first game from a “top games of the 2010s’” podcast. It made number 11 on their list. So I decided to see what the podcast hosts experienced. AI1 was a emotional experience for me. There’s so much dialogue that will make you cry, laugh, cringe, angry, etc. Much like a point-and-click adventure game, you can interact with objects. Sometimes, you get some really great interactions with the cast of characters when you click on them. Those conversations feel like conversations one would have with friends in real life. Sure, some of them are dumb, but those kinds of moments make life bearable. The 2nd game continues that tradition too.
Speaking of the characters, it’s not just Date and Aiba who shine. There’s Mizuki, who’s technically the surrogate daughter of Date. They trade barbs with one another in comedic fashion. It’s cute to see because their relationship reminds me of Gintoki Sakata and Kagura in Gintama. In the first game, other notable characters include a teen idol, a NEET, a yakuza who worships idols, a crossdressing bar mama, and a female boss who throws out sexual innuendos. The second game introduces newer characters like a big chef wearing a mask to hide his disfigured face, a lovestruck former thief, and a mysterious masked female vigilante.
With many characters, the Somnium Files series does a great job at looking into the psychology and mental well-being of them. Whether it’s the dream sequences or regular interactions, one thing is for certain. What drives them, good or bad, is the people in their lives. That’s what I felt from these games. It’s about finding family in the strangest of places when all hope feels lost. These characters are driven to great lengths to gain attention from the ones they love.  And more importantly, don’t be afraid to open your eyes when it comes to conflict. There’s absolutely heavy portrayals of what happens when mental health goes awry due to inner/interpersonal conflict in both games. Dementia, brain tumors, family trauma, survivor’s guilt, and self-hatred are some of the mental health subjects discussed in this series.
Date is a really great hero. There’s a caveat about him though. He’s addicted to pornography/cabaret clubs and this is played to comedic effect. I found Date to be endearing otherwise due to things the player learns in the last few hours of the 1st game. Also, Mizuki is great. She’s the total opposite of Date as she’s a physical powerhouse. It’s nice to see Mizuki carry on the torch in the 2nd game as she’s arguably the most popular character in the series.
With great characters comes great voice acting. There’s amazing talent on the English side for both games. Greg Chun, Erika Harlacher, Corina Boettger, Jackie Lastra, Allegra Clark, Dorah Fine, Zach Aguilar, Kaiji Tang, Patrick Seitz, Stephen Fu, Anairis Quinones, SungWon Cho, Amanda Lee, Y. Chang, Laura Post just to name a bunch. All the VAs seemed to have a really fun time working on both games because they all brought their A-games into making all the conversations worth hearing over and over again.
I’ll end this post with one of my favorite dialogues in the series from Mizuki.
Tumblr media
Uchikoshi has gotten some attention for having progressive views as there’s a good amount of Japanese game developers who still think backwards about certain groups of people. There’s many people who think the Japanese are offended by most Western localization (ESPECIALLY with dialogue like this) and think Japanese people are all “non-political”, but I will say this - there’s Japanese people who do think about the feelings of minorities. It may not be many, but they’re there and outside of whatever internet bubbles fans are in.
And yes, humanity is rooted in weakness. I never told anyone that I was strong and I will gladly admit that I’m only still alive because I’ve had people who helped and supported me despite whatever differences we have.
So yeah, check out the AI: The Somnium Files franchise. It’s still very under the radar as the 1st game didn’t seem to sell a whole lot due to a lack of major marketing. Both games do have flaws, but this is a franchise made with a lot of love and deserves many eyeballs to reach the dream of being one of the most fascinating stories in a time where AI is gaining prominence in the real world and so much mental trauma is left unprocessed.
AI: The Somnium Files and its sequel, -nirvanA Initiative-, are out for the following systems (PC/Switch/PS4/Xbox One).

[SEIYUU] Introducing: Gintama Voice Actors
Did you know that if an Anime is popular enough, the voice actors will have fan-meeting event which includes script-reading from their most popular episode? How cool is that?
SAKATA GINTOKI - Sugita, Tomokazu
Tumblr media
KAGURA - Kugimiya, Rie
Tumblr media
SHIMURA SHINPACHI - Sakaguchi, Daisuke
Tumblr media
KATSURA KOTAROU - Ishida, Akira
Tumblr media
HIJIKATA TOSHIROU - Nakai, Kazuya
Tumblr media
(I was watching an anime about high school boys and was amazed about how one character was voiced. I thought the voice actor was so great and it was the first time I searched for a voice actor. I wanted to hear more from him and it turns out he was Gintoki himself. And that's how I knew and loved Gintama.)

What I Watched This Week – 5/14-5/27
Tumblr media
School Rumble S1&2 - I've avoided this series for the longest time because I had it mixed up in my crumbling old brain with Rumbling Hearts, which looks like something I would hate. Instead of a bug-eyed visual novel adaptation, this is actually a fairly amusing shounen love comedy with a fun cast of over-the-top characters, which is totally in my wheelhouse. It's not really a romance, as all of the comedy depends on the characters always being thwarted in their efforts to snare the objects of their affections, but for the most part the laughs keep the lack of romantic progression from feeling frustrating. It does have the same problem Gintama had, though, in that it felt a little flat towards the end as it tried to wrap up the story threads somewhat seriously. I haven't bothered tracking down the final OVA, as I'm pretty sure it pairs up a number of the characters, and there's no way I could see the story doing that in a way that satisfied me. 7/10
Tumblr media
Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card - This is a funny little series to try to talk about. I enjoyed it while I was watching it, as all the characters I loved in the original series are back and still loveable, and the visuals still look great, but after I finished watching it, it all felt a little unnecessary. Everything was pretty wrapped up at the end of the main series, and it didn't really need a sequel. Additionally, this series doesn't really do anything that the Clow Card and Sakura Card arcs didn't already do. In fact, a lot of this series straight up repeats the events at the beginning of the original series. So, it's a fun extension of the story for fans who want more adventures for their favorite characters, but it's not the sort of sequel that introduces any dramatic changes. 7/10
Tumblr media
SHIMONETA: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn't Exist - I really wanted to enjoy this raunchy comedy about a world where dirty jokes, porn, and other "immoral" material is outlawed by the government, but two things held me back. First, there was a main character who was infatuated with the main boy and sexually assaults him, steals his underwear, and relentlessly sexually harasses him, and I found it dreadfully unfunny. Every time she was onscreen, she annoyed me. Second, queerness existed in the story only as a source of amusement. There was a BL doujinshi that was passed around the girls at the school for them to titter at, and there was a boy with a crush on the main boy whose penchant for wearing a bra and panties inspired anyone who saw it to throw up. It just fatally undercuts the story's message of resistance against conservative moralizing and repression when it takes up the conservative position that queerness is gross and weird itself. I will give it some credit, though, for giving viewers a recipe and instructions for making lube at home. 6/10

I've also been curious!! Have you thought about any "alternate" versions of Reina in canon AUs/timelines? (Like two years arc, Be Forever Yorozuya, or AUs like Ginpachi-sensei)
Would she be up to anything particular in those events or take on any different appearance?
Bonus question: Do you have a favorite Gintama opening? ^-^
*cracks knuckles* alright I got some thoughts™ about time skip (gonna tag as spoilers just in case we're talking about silver soul arc and not the crack one. plus this is going to be pretty long lol). Tho if we're talking about the silly two years one, I can definitely imagine Reina somehow evolving into an outgoing and confident beauty who happens to be a famous mangaka working under sh*unen j*mp, no longer a waitress or stuck with a curse. Basically living the dream. Wears glasses for some reason despite having decent eyesight.
As for the time skip that happens after Utsuro's defeat, it probably depends on a few factors, but she generally more or less ends up in a similar position as the og time skip. One of her doujinshi works ends up attracting the attention of someone in the manga industry and offers her a position as an assistant, which she instantly accepts. The pay isn't the best though (something that she's pretty grumpy about). She's still stuck with her curse, but at this point she's learn to accept it especially after realizing all the perks it comes with. Definitely has traded her waitress apron and outfit for a simpler pink or sky blue komon and has her in a single braid.
If she fell for Gintoki, who straight up leaves for two years, she's probably going to be keeping an eye on Shinpachi, and ends up bonding with him more as a result. Might get converted into an Otsu-chan fan, much to everyone's horror (sans Pachi). Despite this, she really misses a certain gluttonous Yato and an idiotic permhead, and keeps waiting for them to return even if she starts having doubts.
On the flip side, if she ends up falling for Hijikata, she might end up following him to the countryside despite his protests. Man already left once thanks to FS, so she's not taking any chances again. In this case, she might still be working as a waitress.
As for other AUs, I haven't really thought about Ginpachi-sensei :o! I'll have to brainstorm more about that. BFY, on the other hand...ngl my first thought was "reina would most likely get infected by the white plague early on and pass away as a result" (₸~₸). On a brighter note...oh man, I love 90% of the Gintama openings so this is a hard question (^▽^) OP 11 is definitely a favorite cause it focuses on the Shinsengumi (especially Hijikata). Like the part where Hijikata is at first running through the thorns alone, but then is accompanied by Kondo and Sougo? Ooh man my heart.

It’s not just about a monkey named “Jugemu”; it’s also about how old stories remain relevant today.
Last weekend on the Sunday Morning Manga livestream, I talked about the value of the manga Akane-banashi as an example for how, as a teacher, I could teach public speaking and storytelling, and how the story spoke to me personally when it comes to a father coming up with a name for their child.
But something I hadn’t considered, despite it staring me in the face, was what else the “Jugemu” story–the one the protagonist of Akane-banashi performs–has to tell me.
I’m a big fan of Gintama. A few months ago, I had written a review of the final movie. I posted that review alongside a watchlist I curated of those episodes of the Gintama anime you should watch to understand the series, its setting, its characters, their back stories, and how it all pays off in the final movie.
One of the episodes on that watchlist is Episode 221, which introduces a pet monkey for the character Kyuubei. And as Kyuubei struggles more and more to come up with a name for the pet, the main characters–Gintoki, Kagura, and Shinpachi–recommend so many names. Kyuubei loves all of them…and so, combines the names into one lengthy profane name that is also at Shinpachi’s expense:
Jugem Jugem Shit-Tossing of Shin-chan’s Two-Day-Old Underwear of Shinpachi’s Life Balmung Fezalion Issac Schneider 1/3 Pure Love 2/3 Hangnail Anxiety Betrayal Knows My Name Or Does It Really Ignore Calls Squid Dogfish Halibut Trout-Cod Dogfish... This Is A Different Dogfish, I’m Talking About The Dogfish Shark Kaluga Angler Ray Yuuteimiyaoukimukou Pepepepepepepepepepepepe Runny Diarrhea
So, after reading Akane-banashi, I realized, “Oh, Gintama is just a bunch of rakugo stories.” And I don’t just mean because the pet monkey is named after the same “Jugemu” story, or that Episode 221 adapts the same story, only ramped up to be even more absurd and a lot more vulgar.
In one of the first chapters of Akane-banashi, we get a flashback to her teacher explaining why rakugo persists: they’re shaggy dog stories–long-winded anecdotes made up of a sequence of seemingly unrelated events, until the entire story wraps up with an anticlimax.
That’s Gintama. That’s the series. That’s even one entire episode–Episode 283. That’s “Gintoki starts a confessional, gets confessions about his friends and enemies all wishing he was dead, until he finds out one of them left a dead body in his closet, only it’s not a dead body, it’s the shogun, so he tries to cover up the shogun’s death, only for the shogun to come back alive but without his memories, so everyone thinks the shogun is dead because no way is this amnesiac the shogun, and since Gintoki was last seen with the shogun before he disappeared, the police assume Gintoki assassinated him, and the episode ends with Gintoki arrested.”
Read that again. I think I’m mostly accurate in summarizing the plot, give or take a running gag about Gintoki being runny…fecal matter.
That series of events doesn’t quite seem as well connected as it should be. And yet, the events in that sequence end up making sense as you watch: one moment leads to the next moment, one action leads to consequences that then prompt Gintoki to take a new action that causes a new problem that he then tries to solve, only for an earlier problem that wasn’t completely solved getting in the way of the new problem. It’s a kudzu plant, without becoming as bad as most kudzu plots.
Continuing from what Akane’s teacher told her, he explains that rakugo persists as a popular art form because they are stories that still entertain, because they speak to something still persistent in Japanese culture–and, in my selfishness, as I sit here in the United States, many of those stories speak in ways to us readers.
Turning back to the “Gintoki’s confessional leads to his arrest for ‘killing’ the shogun,” it is a story about religion, faith, hucksters, and scam artists. Gintoki turns his friend, Tama, and her ability to act as not just a therapist-like character but an almost divine priestess to confess your sins to, into something akin to a religious cult. He is weaponizing people’s beliefs to get money for their prayers. This story taps into those human desires: to be forgiven, to pore over all of your flaws, to obsess about those flaws until you overlook the more important details (like Gintoki more concerned about his pudding he saved in the fridge than covering up the shogun’s death), and to give into your greed to make a buck off of someone’s beliefs.
And it’s cathartic, to see one more religious huckster get his comeuppance–even if Gintoki is arrested for something he didn’t do, as opposed to manipulating the beliefs of people for a quick buck.
I don’t think what I’m about to recommend is my best example, as it is a problematic text, but hearing the rakugo stories in Akane-banashi, and then seeing those same stories bastardized in Gintama, is like the academic essay “Shakespeare in the Bush,” in which American anthropologist Laura Bohannan is struggling to understand how, while talking with members of the Tiv in West Africa, they are interpreting Hamlet so differently, due to differences in how we all view parent-child obligations, whether ghosts are a thing in our culture, and so on. (And I’ll have more to say about ghosts, cultural transference, and localization on this Sunday’s livestream.)
But that word, “localization” is at the heart of this. So much of our debates in translating and dubbing content in manga and anime is about “authenticity.” I love Gintama even though I don’t understand even one percent of the references in it coming out of rakugo and Japanese culture. I don’t understand all the depth of Akane-banashi, but I do understand what it has to say about storytelling. And just as Gintama is boring the same rakugo that Akane-banashi is pulling from, we have to be open to these reinterpretations. I have been really bad at that–I cling to nostalgia and how I think something should be, not because what I’m seeing is doing a good job at adapting or translating or updating the material, but because I want what is familiar to my very first encounter with it. And I have to do better at that. And that’s another detail I didn’t get to talk about with Akane-banashi, as a lot of the series is also about traditions over new approaches. But this is a long bit of rambling.
The point I wanted to make–all I wanted to say, is that reading Akane-banashi has given me a new appreciation for how great Gintama was at translating rakugo stories, too. And in that watchlist document I made, I neglected to bring up all the filler. Maybe a reverse of that watchlist would be fun for a livestream topic–“essential Gintama ‘shaggy dog’ stories.” Would that be something you would want to hear about? Comment below or email me, [email protected].

Thinking about joining an irl event this year.
(That order this past weekend hit my “I need to get kick my fan activities back into gear” button. Anyway.)
Looking through a list of events coming up:
The deadline for the March event was two weeks ago
The May event has a Gintama mini event, but I won’t be in the country that day.
The pairing-only June event doesn’t have a GinHiji section. It does have a HijiGin section. I’m down with either/or/both, but do I need the mental hassle of creating another circle just for one table at one event?
… October has a Gintama mini event.
And the pairing-only December event has a GinHiji section.
So I guess I’m going to slowly/steadily work towards manning a table in October at the earliest.
We’ll see how well I stick to it this time.

The Forgotten Shounen: Katekyo Hitman Reborn
Tumblr media
This is not a “Why you should watch/read khr” or anything like that. This is just me going into the deep dive and throwing my findings at you. I’m making this because khr used to be my favourite series when I was 15 (I had plushees, posters, tradingcards, the art book etc) and now as an adult I constantly find myself baffled at how unknow it seems to be.
1. Okay first what is khr?
Katekyo Hitman Reborn! or just Reborn! is a series by Akira Amano which was published in Weekly Shounen Jump from 2004 to 2012 (with 42 volumes) and got an anime adaption which run from 2006 to 2010 on Tv Tokyo (with 202 episodes and one OVA).
2. What’s it about?
Khr is a parody of the italian mafia and plays in a world where the mafia is heavily influencial. The protagonist is the japanese middle schooler Sawada Tsunayoshi who is known as “No good Tsuna” because of his failing grades, general weak and cowardly personality and weak physics.
Tumblr media
He becomes aware of the mafia world when a 2 year old baby called Reborn arrives at his house claiming to be the greatest hitman and declaring himself his home tutor. Reborn was send by the 9th head of the Vongola famiglia who is ready to retire and looking for a new heir. Which of course, is supposed to be Tsuna and now it's Reborns job to shape him into a worthy sucessor.
Tumblr media
Tsuna rejects the violence of the mafia world and refuses the position as the 10th. Thanks to Reborn and his general craziness Tsuna meets different people and starts to make real friendships. Reborn wants 6 of those friends to be Tsuna's future guardians, basically a group of people which will be closest to him in the vongola famiglia. Tsuna might have no interest in those positions but the friendships he builds with them become really precious to him.
Tumblr media
Reborns arrivial also brings in the enemies of the Vongola family which leads to Tsuna being forced to engage in battles. Generally Tsuna openly avoids fights and prefers to run away but will put himself in danger for his friends' sake or because of something Reborn did.
Through out the series Tsuna matures and gains strenght but he never becomes a power fantasy. He's just a guy with many flaws who grows through the human connections he makes.
Personally I think the relationship between Reborn and Tsuna is one of the best student teacher reltaionships in all of manga only topped by Mob and Reigen from Mob Psycho 100. Especially the last arc really underlines their unique relationship to me.
Furthermore, khr offers a new and unique battle system: The flames. I'm not gonna go into to too much detail but the general idea is that one fights with their dying will flame which basically turns off your the savety switch so you can fight with everything you have. The flames are seperated into different categories such as: sky, storm, mist, rain, sun, lightning and cloud and have different attributes asigned to each one. Tsuna's use of the sky flame and his transformation when using it is still one of my favourite shounen transformations to this day.
Tumblr media
3. What happened?
The series did really well and then not so well over the course of its serialisation. After the manga got an anime adaption it increased in populairty and video games, light novels, and other products such as CDs were created based on the series. Reborn is one of the best selling series of Weekly Shōnen Jump and has sold around 30 Million volumes overall. It was and still is very popular in Japan but rather unknown in the west.
Tumblr media
According to the article "The Rise and Fall of Weekly Shonen Jump: A Look at the Circulation of Weekly Jump" khr was the 10th bestselling series in Weekly Shōnen Jump, with a total of 7 million copies sold in 2007.
Tumblr media
This number increasing to 15 milion in 2008. Which placed khr into the 4th best selling series of 2008 in Japan.
Tumblr media
Between 2008 and 2010 those sales declined but still kept strong with khr as the 6th top selling manga in 2009, 8th best selling in 2010 and then 24th best selling in 2012.
In November 2014, readers of the Da Vinci magazine voted khr number 17 on a list of Weekly Shōnen Jump's greatest manga series of all time.
After the anime came to an apprupt stop in 2010 for unknown reasons the manga sells took a visible hit. (Apparently the studio wanted to put the anime on halt because they were busy with other projects and give Akira Amano time to develop her story but I couldn't find any source for this claim) Furthermore, the rushed last chapters of the manga in 2012 declined the popularity of the series even more. There's no offical statement as to why the manga was ended in such a way but it's reasonable to assume that Jump either cut it considering the decreasing sales or Akira Amano choose to end it for personal reasons.
Nontheless, Tsuna not being included in Jump Force (a fighting game where you can play as different characters from Jump) in 2019 even tho he made it in earlier Jump Stars games also underlines the decreased interest in the series.
Rumors on a reboot or anime adaption of the last two arcs surface from time to time but are genereally unlikely. Artland the studio which made khr has gone bankrupt around 2015-2016. It might be taken on by another studio but rather uncommen especially with such an old series.
4. Art style
The khr anime ended over 10 years ago and the old art style might not be appealing to newer audiences.
Tumblr media
Especailly because the anime adaption follows Akira Amanos old art style which heavily developed within the years. Here a picture comparing characters in the new art style:
Tumblr media
A modern anime adaption in the new art style would be aesthetically pleasing. It would probably look similiar to Psycho Pass since Akira Amano did the concept art for this series.
(My personal art student hot take is that both art styles are unique and fun. Up to this day Akira Amano still has my favourite art style and even if the amount folds in the characters clothing is a little extreme I love it dearly.)
5. Criticism
The show is not without flaws and even if I greatly enjoy it it wouldn't be right not to adress them.
Daily Life Arc:
A lot of people view the first 20 to 25 episodes as fillers and quickly lose intererst in the series. This is due to the fact that Akira Amano inteded the series to be a gag manga and focuses the first chapters on world building, character introduction and comical narratives. It's rumored that the decision to develop the story into a battle shounen was made because the sales weren't doing well enough at first. So the first chapters/episodes may seem titidious but are necessary for the story and the development of the characters. The tonal shift from a more gintama like gag manga to a darker battle focused story can also be offputting to some viewers.
Either way a lot of people blame this arc when discussing why khr never got an english dub or didn't end up on Toonami. I've also read that the manga never finished serializing in the north america. However, it finished in other western languages like german and spanish.
Censoring:
The anime censors A LOT. From Gokudera's smoking habit, Yamamoto's whole character arc which deals with heavy themes such as depression and suicidal thoughts. The general bloodiness of the manga was censored and sometimes whole chapters and characters were left out even if those were important to the devolopment of others.
Filler episodes:
Out of the 202 episodes the anime has around 29 filler episodes which makes roughly 14 %.
Sexism:
Even if Reborn was written by a woman most female characters are rather flat and their storylines often tied to a male character in one way or another.
Genereal things:
Khr, like many other long running series, is sometimes criticised for a lack of world building or unpopular narrative choices.
6. Hope?
Khr isn't exactly dead. As stated before the series is still very popular in Japan and still gets new merch pretty regulary. There are also petitions floating around for a reboot or a new anime season but those never get a lot of traction. Furthermore #Reborn2期アニメ化 (#Reborn2ndAnimation) used to get some traction on twitter not too long ago. Last year the Anime News Network did a poll on which anime the readers would like to see a rebooot of and khr placed second.
Either way here's a collection of recent khr things I could find.
- In 2018 a new bluray set was released in north america
- The khr stage play reached yet another new season
- A mobile game was released last year
- Currently ongoing anime cafe event called "Concerto di Vongola"
- Last month there was an event with the former VAs and stage play actors where they discussed their favourite khr episodes.
- There has been an increase in blind reacts to the openings on youtube which might bring in a new fan base. The biggest one I could find had around 90k views and was made in 2019. On this note check out the soundtrack. The first openeing Drawing Days by SPLAY still makes me go insane (but I'm biased of course)
There also renewed hope for a new season/reboot because Shaman King, Inuyasha and Bleach got anounced for new seasons after a long hiatus. It's important to keep in mind that the circumstances for those series are differnt tho. For example bleachs new anime is often tied to the immense success of the gatcha game.
7. Conclusion
Khr is a series which used to be a flagship for Weekly Shounen Jump and is deeply beloved by it's fans, especially in Japan. It influenced other shounen series like bnha. It would be nice to see it gaining a bigger fanbase in the west :)

Fan Stranger, Not Danger
Tumblr media
It’s about time for fan convention season and that means fans going out to events once more to celebrate their fandom. Even though COVID still lingers, the convention experience is worth it. That’s mostly because you get a good chance of talking to strangers that can become new friends. I want to talk about that because I want everyone to see that there’s good people out there.
I was reading a 2021 Atlantic article called “Why We Should Talk to Strangers More.” It detailed various anecdotes of people’s experiences of talking to strangers and the joy they got when talking to them. They greatly underestimated the reception they will get from the stranger and vice versa. It turns out most conversations end up being pleasant. Many things are in-play as to why people don’t talk to strangers, but talking to strangers is a beautiful thing. It’s argued that we don’t know how to talk to them due to social messaging saying that strangers in general are bad.
I recall one moment where I talked to a stranger on the way to Crunchyroll Expo 2017. I ran into a woman who was wondering which rail train to take to the convention center. So she talked to me as I was in total cosplay and I guided her to the same train I was taking. We talked for a bit and then she revealed that she worked at VIZ Media. We then talked about what was hot at the time (Haikyuu!! and Tokyo Ghoul). After we reached the convention, we parted ways and told each other to have a great time. While we didn’t become friends, I enjoyed the conversation. It got me more hyped for the convention.
About a couple of months ago, a new user joined a mahjong Discord server I was a part of and asked about what to do at anime conventions as they were going to one for the 1st time. I chimed in and said.
“Regarding conventions, just hang around people with similar interests. Go to panels that interest you. Talk to people when you can. Take photos. Artists’ alley has some fun stuff to buy at times. I hope you get to make friends there because they make convention experiences worthwhile.“
I did check in with them later and they told me that while they may not be adept in social skills, they managed to make a friend. I considered that a success.
What I want to say is that meeting strangers is arguably the best solution to some of life’s problems. Many popular anime/manga stories are about meeting strangers that change heroes’ lives. I think about Gintama’s introduction where Shinpachi meets Gintoki at his job and decides to join him after seeing how cool he was standing up to the Amanto. There’s many scenes in anime/manga where a disgruntled youth finds a lone badass to be inspiring and their heart tells them to go with them. There’s also the opposite where the lone badass finds peace with strangers that turn out to be the best friends they needed. The best example is Guts from Berserk as his supporting cast helped him ease the burden of helping Casca and providing him a companionship that he missed since his old Band of the Hawk days.
There’s so much conditioning in media and outside influences saying the world isn’t safe. Here’s the thing - the ones who often hurt us the most are those closest to us. When I hear stories about abuse of any kind, it is usually from someone who knows the victim well. Trauma can be caused by people who are supposed to protect/support us. I notice a lot of anime/manga characters are usually hurt because someone close to them treated them like crap.
Given how much has happened in the past 3 years, definitely reach out to someone who looks like they could be nice to talk to. You deserve a manga-esque story that can make life a bit more worthwhile and less lonely. You deserve a chance to see that people are still beautiful and trying to live the best they can despite the mercilessness of it all.
