My dearest Mary🥰… could I ask for nr. 13 of the cozy prompts with hannix🫶🏻?
DARIA MY LOVE!!!!!! Yes please!!! I've even got the perfect song for it too (lol).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thanksgiving morning and already chaos had begun to ensue in the kitchen. First it had been the cat trying to get at the turkey and then Togo, Jake's husky, had tried to get at it, leaving Natasha no choice but to shove it way to the back of the counter to keep it out of their way.
And then there had been the pie.
Natasha had painstakingly prepped her Gigi's cranberry pie the night before, but had almost dropped it trying to get it out of the fridge.
I need a mimosa.......or a screwdriver.....she thought.
Jake came traipsing down the stairs to the kitchen just a few minutes later. "Alright, alright, alright," he chortled, stretching his arms and back out. "Baby's fed and went back to sleep, dinner smells great....."
"I almost dropped the fucking pie," Natasha cut in.
"Babes almost dropped the fuckin pie.....what?"
"Dumbass dog got underfoot and I almost dropped Gigi's pie," Natasha informed him.
Jake gave Togo the death glare but the dog's ears merely twitched. "Boi git on over here," he said snapping his fingers.
With a high pitched whine and a sheepish look, Jake guided Togo out the sliding glass door and out to the snowy backyard. "There ya go," he said. "Go chase a squirrel, bury your bone or better yet, go take a mean ass shit in the yard next door."
"Jake!" Natasha barked.
All Jake could do was laugh. Natasha hated Mrs. Harrington as much as everybody else in the neighborhood, but just didn't feel like dealing with the fallout of Togo doing his business in her yard.
Jake went to the little bluetooth speaker in the kitchen where his phone was hooked up and charging. As soon as he hit play and the music had started, he started doing his goofy little dance that was sure to get Natasha laughing.
We're all in the same boat Fishing in the same hole Wondering where the same time goes We're all in the same boat
"C'mon sweet thing, come dance," Jake begged.
"Jake I've got potatoes that need to be peeled," she chuckled.
"C'mon," he begged.
Natasha groaned and rolled her eyes and before she knew it, she was dancing with Jake right there in the kitchen.
We could all believe what we believe And peacefully agree to disagree But you can't judge a man Until you walk a country mile in his shoes
We're all in the same boat Fishing in the same hole Wondering where the same time goes And money too Tryna fix the same broke hearts Wishing on the same stars We're all hoping hope floats And we're all in the same boat
Jake spun her right around and dipped her back, stealing a quick peck on the lips before bringing her back up again. "Jake this isn't Dancing With The Stars!" Natasha laughed.
"Took dance lessons in high school honey," he chuckled.
We all been kicked and knocked around But you ain't gonna keep a good man down You can run like hell from your mistakes But you can't hide from your truth
We're all in the same boat Fishing in the same hole Wondering where the same time goes And money too Tryna fix the same broke hearts Wishing on the same stars We're all hoping hope floats And we're all in the same boat
The smells of dinner cooking and the raucous laughter that came from the kitchen was infectious as Jake and Natasha spun each other around, laughing their asses off at how silly they had both become.
Share them peaches, if you're holding Take those shots and keep reloading If you can't be nice Don't say nothing at all So help somebody who might be struggling Spread a little love, gotta give back something If the ship keeps rocking We'll all go overboard
We're all in the same boat Fishing in the same hole Wondering where the same time goes And money too Tryna fix the same broke hearts Wishing on the same stars We're all hoping hope floats And we're all in the same boat Yeah, we're all hoping hope floats We're all in the same boat
"Alright, alright," Natasha laughed once the song had finished and the next had begun to play. "Lets get that turkey in the oven before everybody shows up."
"And we'd better do it before Jack wakes up again," Jake reminded her.
"Challenge accepted," Natasha said before placing a kiss on his lips.

Welcome to Soho. Vampire Joe Quinn x Fem Reader
Summary: You’re dragged to a club after work on a Friday night with a group of friends. You catch the attention of a dark eyed man who thinks you’re nothing special to him, initially. Oh how that changes in later chapters.
A/N: I’ve completed this over on Ao3, Posting the first chapter here because I can. Plus I loved writing Joe as a Vampire. The song she recognises is In My Mind by Dynoro & Gigi D'Agostino. I hate using irrelevant tags but y’know. reach. TW: mention of rape, but it’s the reader panicking.
Joseph Anthony Francis Quinn, thank you for being the ultimate muse.
Tumblr media
You’d never usually consider this type of club as the perfect night out, but your work friends wanted to blow off some steam and you followed. Maybe a change of scenery from your usual dive bars would be refreshing?
You’d expect people to stare at you, because of how out of place you look, but you realise you’re projecting your own insecurity, and the people around you? They don’t care, they’re there for the same reason you are. You let out a sigh of relief, body relaxing a little.
Welcome to Soho.
Your friends all get cocktails, you’d die for a pint of cider, but you decide to surrender to the moment.
“Uh, can I get Dirty martini?… Don’t worry about the olive.” Your hands clutching the side of the bar. You’re surprised to feel it’s not sticky due to all the spilled drinks from drunk students like the ones you’re so familiar with.
Turning to look at those around you, men in perfectly ironed shirts, women in short dresses and high heels, hair impeccably curled and teased. You look down at your stacked Docs, and black skinnies. The cut off sleeves from your shirt exposing the side of your ribcage. Maybe the doorman felt pity on you. Jesus, stop with the self deprecation, you’re here, and you’re determined to have a good time.
The bar woman passes your drink and you pay. Great. There’s an olive. You’re about to take a sip when a hand comes out of nowhere and takes the end of the toothpick the olive was impaled on. Following the gracious way it moved up to soft pink lips and perfect natural teeth. He put the olive in his mouth, dragging his teeth along the wood, slowly chewing the salty orb, before fiddling with the tooth pick as his eyes dart up and down your frame.
“What if I wanted that?” You say deadpan.
“You specifically asked for no olive.” He smiled, his chewing slowing before he swallows.
How he heard you over the thumping music you can’t comprehend. He wasn’t anywhere near you.
Taking moment to judge this olive thief, he was about six foot, broad shoulders, his skin pale in contrast to the dark suit and shirt he was wearing, is it navy? Black? Bordeaux? You can’t tell under these lights it keeps changing. His suit pants were slim, as they skimmed his thighs down to his Chanel boots. A single chain hung from his waist to his back pocket.
At least you have good style, Mr Olive Thief.
“You…Don’t usually come here, do you?” He leans closer so his mouth is by your ear.
You gesture to your outfit with a sarcastic smile. His aura was calm, non threatening. You’re used to people grabbing and twisting your arm to get a better look of your tattoos, but he admired them with his eyes, not his hands. Hands which were clutching a thick red looking liquid garnished with celery, he takes a sip, his tongue clicking as he continues to stare at you. Had he even blinked?
He removes his right hand from his pocket and outstretches it to you. Formal.
“I’m Joe.. By the way…”
Olive thief has a name.
You knock back the martini in one and shake his hand. It was cool, not the warmth you’d expect for someone underground in a neon lit club.
“Same again?” He smiles.
The night went on, you and Joe didn’t move from the bar, talking, drinking bloody Mary’s and Martinis. You completely forgot you were here with work friends. There was something about him that drew you in, his eyes looked black under the low light of the bar, but they crinkled in the corners when he laughed.
A little worse for wear you lean over the bar and ask for shots, you didn’t care what they were you just wanted to feel your throat burn. Sambucca. Excellent.
Joe grimaces, as he takes the tiny glass between his finger and thumb.
“Sambucca, really? How old are you?” He laughs, his open mouthed smile remaining long after his chuckling fades.
“Okay lightweight. I’ll do yours if you’re too pussy.” Your words are starting to slur, realising you’re flirting with him you feel a flush of heat in your cheeks.
Joes face turns faux stern, as he throws his head back with the syrup like liquid. Smacking his tongue and furrowing his brows, he doesn’t like Sambucca.
You laugh and down the shot, the heat from the alcohol spreading down your throat and warming your stomach. Licking the remaining trace of the aniseed flavour off your lips you notice a silver chain around his neck, delicately draping his collarbones. Fuelled by alcohol induced confidence you reach out, hooking a finger under it, lightly pulling him closer. He turns his ear to you.
“Silver looks really good on you!”
“Oh it’s not silver. It’s white gold, love.” He smirks, his eyes dark, like his pupils have taken over any colour of his iris. He still hasn’t blinked. Jesus.. Had you forgotten to breathe?
A repetitive voice snaps you out of your trance, bass boosted, fuck a song you recognised.
And in my mind, in my head.. This is where we all came from
“AH!” You shriek, taking Olive Thief by the hand and dragging him toward the mass of bodies on the strobe lit dance floor.
The dreams we have, the love we share This is what we're waiting for
He laughs while happily being dragged, quickly finishing his drink and setting it on a passing table.
The same four sentences repeating, they’d turned the bass up so it thumps through your chest.
The bright flashes of light illuminate him better. Velvet. His suit was black velvet. His hair a mess of auburn curls. His shirt black crisp cotton with two or three buttons undone, the shadows cast by his collarbone on his throat sending you.
He places a hand at your waist to steady your feet.
“You okay?” He mouths, a flurry of bodies dancing and waving drinks in the air all around you. But you just continue to dance to the bassey thumps. He doesn’t move, the only still body amongst a sea of people, almost like he’s trying to control himself. His jaw is clenched and his eyes intense.
You dance close to him, almost grinding into him in an attempt to get him to loosen up. He doesn’t, odd because he seemed so happy to be, let’s face it, forced to the dance floor.
You turn to face him, the bass pounding through you as you reach to grab his hand, you’ve no idea what’s caused his demeanour to change. Before your fingers touch he grips your wrist, pulls you closer to him, his left hand snug around your waist. He wasn’t being gentle.
He craned his neck down as he gently swayed you. His lips parallel to your ear, “You’ve made this so easy for me, you know?”
Shit, has he drugged you? Were you about to black out. Fuck. Was he threatening to rape you?
“Huh?” You try to turn your head but he blocks it with his cheek, his whole body reigns dominion over yours. He moistens his lips with his tongue, and you feel him take in a deep breath at your neck.
“Joe?” Your voice wobbling, worry kicking in causing you to tremble. “Joe…Please don’t.. please don’t rape me. Please… just let me go. I won’t say anything to anyone.”
He pulls his head back looking you in the eyes, disgusted.
“You really think that’s what I want?… Look, if we were to fuck, I wouldn’t lay a finger on you unless it were consensual.”
His skin still feels cold despite the dance floor sweltering, your hands clammy as they flex while his are tightly around your wrist. A strobe light flashes across his mouth, his canines are pointed. It’s been staring you in the face all along.
“What are you?” Alarm bells ringing, you’re trapped. Surely, he wouldn’t dare do anything surrounded by so many people.
His lips close and curl into a smile. “Nosferatu… Dracula… Incubus..” he bobs his head “Vampyr” he rolls the R on his tongue. “Bloodsucker…..”
He brings the hand that is clutching your wrist up to his chest. Still swaying you. “Vampire, love… A vampire.”
You’re taken aback by his reluctance to hide what he was. It’s like he flaunts it.
“Don’t tell me… My blood sings to you, I’m your lover from a thousand years ago reincarnated? All that cliché nonsense.”
He scoffs. “No. You’re just in…. The right place at the right time.”
Your heart skips in your chest. You’re nothing but a nightcap to him. A midnight snack. He runs his nose over the side of your cheek, nudging you, exposing your throat as he lowers his mouth to the throbbing in your neck.
His lips meet your skin first then his tongue, lapping at the fine layer of salty perspiration that had coated your skin. Then his teeth, sharp pain fading into a full throb, as you felt white hot heat pour into him. He groans into your skin as he drinks from you.
You’re clinging to his shirt trying to keep your eyes open to get the attention of someone. Anyone around you. From afar you just look like lovers in a passionate embrace. His hand that was on your waist moves to your lower back holding you up and close to him.
Black spots start to appear in your vision. Shit, this is it isn’t it. The edges of your vision become hazy, as everything starts sounding like it’s in the next room. You let out a tiny gasp before turning limp in his arms. He had you by the throat like a lion and prey.
Joe releases you, cradling you before shrugging off his jacket and wrapping you in it. He rolls up his sleeves to his elbows. The people around you just thinking you fainted from the heat, awww he’s being a good boyfriend by bridal carrying you away from the dance floor.
Squeezing past a group of Hens at the bar with multiple inflatable cocks waving around.
“Hey, can I get a coke? Make sure it’s extra syrupy… Low blood sugar. Bring it outside? Back of the smoking area, you know my spot.” He smiles… not before sucking any trace of your blood from his teeth.
Pushing the door to the closed off garden open with his boot, he gently sets you down on the bench, ensuring your head is resting on a pillow. He keeps his eye on your chest like a hawk, ensuring it rises and falls with each breath.
Confident he hasn’t killed you, he pulls a pack of menthol cigarettes from his pocket, dragging one out with his mouth. Shit. His lighter was in the suit jacket.
“Sorry, love.”
He reaches over, fumbling with both pockets until he finds it tucked away in one of the inside concealed pockets. Taking the white gold zippo he flicks it and lights his cigarette. You mumble and come to, awoken by his frantic patting, and prying fingers.
Just as you try to sit up, to a waitress brings the thick black carbonated drink with a straw. Joe winks as he thanks her, fuck… This guy has done this before.
“Wh… How much did you take from me?”
He takes a drag, talking before exhaling a cloud of smoke. “About half a pint.”
“That all?”
He laughs, the smoke dissipating as he flicks the ash into the awaiting ashtray.
“Even with alcohol thinning your blood, it just didn’t want to spurt out. Your blood pressure is far too low. You need to eat more salt.”
“Oh so you’re a fucking doctor too?” You sit up, slightly woozy, clutching the velvet suit jacket around you.
“No I’ve just been around a long time… Hey, careful. Take it slow okay?” His hand hovered in the space between you.
Your neck had stopped throbbing, it was more a dull burn now. The encounter sure had sobered you up, your mouth dry, yet sticky. As your eyes land on the glass of coke in front you, he notices and passes it to you, taking the straw in your mouth before clutching the glass.
“Uhgh, I should’ve asked if you’d poisoned this before drinking it shouldn’t I?”
“I can assure you I haven’t tampered with it. It’s just extra sweet, I thought you could use the sugar.”
You take several large gulps, the sugar hitting your stomach as the realisation of what the fuck just happened sinks in.
“Joe, you bit me.”
“Yeah.”
“In the middle of a crowd of people.”
“Yeah?”
“… Wh…. Why me? An attractive man like you could woo any of the women here?”
“Who’s to say I haven’t?…. And, attractive? Well you know how to make a man blush.”
“Don’t avoid my question.”
He sighs, looking down as he stubs his cigarette out. “Look… I have…”
He waves his hand around
“Willing donors shall we say. I was pretty well fed when I got here, you have to be when there are so many warm bodies around you… Anyway… You walked in and smelt so fucking good, I wanted to taste what was flowing through you… just a taste” he narrows his eyes and pinches his fingers together as he leans closer to you.
“So it wasn’t wrong place wrong time, for me… then? It was my blood?”
Joe stares off, jutting his bottom lip out and raising his eyebrows.
“When I’m out, I drink for pleasure not sustenance.” His eyes dart to you without turning his head as he smirks. The smile making your heart beat that little bit faster.
“Excuse me…?”
He glanced down at your chest, then back at your face. For once a man wasn’t staring at your chest because of your tits.
“Mm.. I kinda wish I hadn’t tasted you now though, because I want more. I tried to hold off….”
“The weird Jasper Hale, creepy tense looking stance on the dance floor?”
“Jasper who?”
“Never mind…”
“But yeah.. I tired. But you, god.. You came closer and I could almost feel your pulse throb on my tongue.” His fists clench.
“You were close to a speaker….”
He stares at you, unimpressed. “Love, what I felt was a lot faster than that song.”
That shut you up.
“Uh… so… What now. Are you going to chain me up in your basement, as a living blood bag?”
“Do you want me to?” He leans in smirking
“I…uh…” flustered. This fucking guy.
He takes a deep breath, his chest puffing out, buttons on his black shirt straining.
“Um…I would like to see you again…. Not to drink from you.. Although, that would be nice.” He chews his bottom lip. “We could do something in the week? Maybe?” His huge dark eyes turn and hold your gaze.
You stare at him trying to believe what you’re hearing. This.. Vampire, is essentially asking you out on a date? How could you say no to those eyes?
“This isn’t a plan to bite me again is it?”
He places both hands on his chest in sincerity “Stake my heart, hope to die. I promise.”

Hey, do you know what I just noticed? In a comment about Zeke's mother Mai Lau, which tells about Zeke's dad (Henry Lau) divorcing Mai Lau and leaving Zeke when he was young. You do know it kind of makes a similar reference to Treasure planet, when Jim Hawkins dad leaves him and his mother. Right? Anyways I was , for a question did you get it as a reference for Zeke's dad or you just came up with it?
Doverstar Treasure Planet was my favorite Disney film for a long time growing up, but no, Zeke's family situation isn't inspired by Jim's family situation. The reality is that far too many men who should be there for their children and wives leave and don't fulfill their role. Zeke's dad is sadly part of a terrible real-life trend spanning generations. Losing family and gaining new family is something of a theme in Lilo and Stitch's franchise. Mertle's dad isn't in the picture, Stitch was made as the first of a new species and has no organic ties, Mason is adopted, Lilo and Nani are orphans. But Mertle has her mother and Gigi, Stitch was redeemed and found his own family to belong to, Mason has Mrs. Bridge and the Pelekai family, Nani married David and started a family of her own, and she and Lilo will always have each other as well as Jumba, Pleakley, Stitch, David, Kai, Ani, and the rest of their family! That's part of what ohana means.

Do you think Lau’s statement on Palestine will be bad for her, job-wise? I actually got concerned after what happened to Melissa getting kicked off from Scream and also Bella being dropped from Dior
I understand your concern fully and also share it with you and many other fans. What happened to Melissa was disgraceful and unfair, to say the least. This subject is upon such a big deep hole and any word can be misunderstood — meanwhile we had Lau vent all at once on her stories which, even if every word she stated and reafirmed is true, this could, of course, potentially affect her professional life.
About Bella and Dior, we feel the need to clarify that these news are FALSE.
Tumblr media
The claim was that Dior dropped Bella as a model in retaliation to her support of Palestine, when the truth is that Bella’s contract with Dior ended in March 2022. We got many links clarifying these fake news, this one in particular, and also many Bella’s fandoms we follow and support on here and Instagram.
Note: it is not clear or stated by Dior that the brand supports Palestine openly, but is proven that they did not donated or supported actions by the Israeli government whatsoever — meanwhile we have Chanel donating $4 million to Israel and their imperial propaganda. This just provens to me some people are trying to put the blame on Bella, Lau and other models who are affiliated/ambassador of these brands, to simply spread misinformation and not because they care (which funnily it’s exactly what Lau said on her vent stories).
I mean I could continue with this but I think everyone gets the point. You can’t decide the entirety of a brand’s character by one or two actions, but maybe with their history along time. If you study or are interested in Haute Couture brands, you’ll know which brands were involved with Nazis, wars and so on. And, of course, I do not think they should remain silent but I think we, as fashion enthusiasts, can make an effort to search it up before spreading false claims.
Answering your question: yes, I do get concerned, but I am sure Lau knows who she works with, what will be good or bad for her and more than anything, how she stands by her values. How she always did. That’s how many of our sister fandoms are feeling (Bella’s, Gigi’s, Mona’s, Paloma’s…) and the fact that we are talking about it and keeping an eye on their agencies/agents is maybe what is keeping them in line with them, too.

Cover Art | You Truly Assumed by Laila Sabreen
In this compelling and thought-provoking debut novel, after a terrorist attack rocks the country and anti-Islamic sentiment stirs, three Black Muslim girls create a space where they can shatter assumptions and share truths. Sabriya has her whole summer planned out in color-coded glory, but those plans go out the window after a terrorist attack near her home. When the terrorist is assumed to be Muslim and Islamophobia grows, Sabriya turns to her online journal for comfort. You Truly Assumed was never meant to be anything more than an outlet, but the blog goes viral as fellow Muslim teens around the country flock to it and find solace and a sense of community. Soon two more teens, Zakat and Farah, join Bri to run You Truly Assumed and the three quickly form a strong friendship. But as the blog’s popularity grows, so do the pushback and hateful comments. When one of them is threatened, the search to find out who is behind it all begins, and their friendship is put to the test when all three must decide whether to shut down the blog and lose what they’ve worked for…or take a stand and risk everything to make their voices heard.

The Best Type of Chaos, 1/? (S12 Group Fic) - Lau
a/n- welcome the the s12 highschool au that nobody asked for but i’m writing anyway! this is my first time submitting anything here so i hope y'all like it (and i did it right) there will be plenty of ships so keep your eyes peeled!!
summary - twelve teenagers at one dinner table may sound like a recipe for disaster. and maybe it is. but the girls love it and love each other, so who can really complain? it’s their junior year, and they’re ready to take it on together.
A group of 12 teenage girls at one dinner table in the cafeteria sounds like it would end in disaster, but for the past few years, The Gays Plus Gigi (as they had deemed themselves) have managed it quite well. It’s like they have their own little family - sometimes they fight, Dahlia usually being the one to start an argument, but they would always make up in no time. They make the most out of their lunch hour each day, allowing themselves to take a small break from the often stressful school day. The group just worked together, each person a cog in the machine they had built up during their time at school.
They would sit in the same seats at the same table each day, their routine hardly ever being broken. The only two girls who weren’t there everyday were Gigi and Nicky, both being ‘popular’ girls and sitting with their other friends most days. They both preferred their little family of twelve though, loving the ability to be authentically themselves.
-
The first day of school always seemed to bring up a different emotion in each student. On the first day of junior year, Crystal woke up early, her alarm marking the start of a new day. She wasn’t usually a morning person (not many students were) but sometimes she could appreciate the way the morning sun would shine brightly throughher windows, brightening up her mood in the process. She was ready for the school year. She knew it would soon get stressful and something would absolutely go wrong at some point, but right now she was looking forward to another fresh start.
Gigi hated the first day of school. She had a hard time letting go of summer, which seemed to only get better each year, meaning reality came crashing back to her harder and harder each time it ended. When she woke up, the only thing that could motivate her to leave her bed was the thought of seeing her friends again, even if she had seen them a million times over summer anyways. She could never get tired of them. Soon enough, she made herself a coffee and set off to Crystal’s house so they could walk together.
Crystal didn’t wait for Gigi to knock on her door, she swung it open the second Gigi arrived at her doorstep, quickly giving her a bone-crushing hug as a ‘hello’.
“I’ve missed you so much Crys” Crystal giggled at the way Gigi’s breath tickled her neck, both of them refusing to leave the tight hug.
“Gigi you saw me, like, three days ago” Gigi stepped back to look Crystal in the eyes.
“I know! I know, but it was summer then and now it’s not and we’ll still see eachother but it won’t be the same because now we’ll be worrying about school and we can’t just hang out. We’ll have like no spare time!”
“G. I will always have time for you. Now let’s go, we can’t be late”
The walk to school took them the best part of half an hour - too long for Crystal’s liking, but at least it gave her time to chat with Gigi before the day got too hectic. The girls walked side by side, shoulders bumping with every other step. The contact was not unwelcome. They had always been close, both emotionally and physically, not being scared to show any affection. They had even shared some friendly kisses from time to time. They were just pecks. And Gigi was straight anyways so it couldn’t mean anything, right?
Crystal couldn’t help but steal glances at the girl next to her on the way to school. She had always found Gigi beautiful. The way she walks, the way she talks. Crystal would never admit this aloud, not like it wasn’t already painfully obvious to everyone but Gigi, but she was in deep. It didn’t help that Gigi had started interrogating her on their walk.
“So how are things with your girlfriend? I feel like you haven’t mentioned her in like months. You’re not keeping something from me are you? You didn’t like, secretly elope over summer did you? Because that would be rude Crystal Elizabeth. Not inviting your best friend, horrible” Crystal knew she was joking, but she also knew she did actually have to explain why she hadn’t mentioned her, Gigi was just using humour to get round it. Maybe to try to make it less awkward.
Crystal stopped walking. Gigi was right, she hadn’t mentioned her girlfriend in a while because she hadn’t even thought about her. She broke it off at the beginning of Summer, when she began to realise she had rising feelings for someone else. She wasn’t even that bothered by the break up, which was surprising because Crystal felt every emotion so strongly she would often get overwhelmed.
“We uh… we broke up. At the start of summer. I didn’t tell you? I thought I had. Funny.”
Crystal knew for a fact she hadn’t mentioned it to Gigi - the less she talks to her about her love-life, the better. She can’t have Gigi find out about her feelings for her. She knew she wasn’t the kind of girl to instantly assume every lesbian has a weird crush on her. She has been the most supportive of Crystals’ sexuality ever since she came out. A true ally. Hell, Gigi had joined her for pride a few times, and didn’t flinch when people assumed she wasn’t straight. Sometimes she would even forget to correct them. But still, no matter how cool Gigi was with her closest friend being gay, Crystal was terrified of exposing her feelings. She didn’t want to be the lesbian who crushes on her straight best friend. She doesn’t want to make Gigi uncomfortable, especially with how close they can get at times.
“You guys broke up?! Oh my god, do I need to kill her? Because I will. Are you ok? Because all summer you seemed to be ok and, I mean this with so much love, I kind of expected you to be a mess if things didn’t work out…”
Crystal was at a loss for words. How could she even begin to explain this? ‘Yeah it didn’t work out because I’m kind of in love with my straight best friend. You.’ No. Absolutely not.
“Yeah um, I guess we both kinda lost feelings for eachother and decided we’d be better off as friends. I really am ok G, promise. Thanks for checking though. Anyways! Are you ok? I know you never really talked about your breakup much. I’ve gotta be honest, that guy totally rubbed me the wrong way”
Gigi’s mind suddenly went blank. There was a reason she didn’t necessarily want to talk about her breakup - especially with Crystal. But she didn’t know if she could even admit that to herself yet.
“Yeah I’m ok. I don’t wanna talk about it” Gigi cursed her voice for cracking at the end. Crystal’s face softened at her friend’s vulnerability and chose to respond by intertwining their fingers together and giving Gigi’s hand a squeeze. The action probably wasn’t good for either of them.

Jan and Jaida caught up that morning when they both visited their lockers, which were conveniently right next to each other. Both girls were stuffing their basketball kits into their locker, idly chatting about the year ahead of them. They had always enjoyed each other’s company, and their friendship was built on love - they trusted one another with their life. And their secrets. Which is why Jan wasn’t surprised when Jaida brought up Jackie.
“Ok, chile, what is up with you and Jackie? Y’all better sort yourselves out and get together this year or so help me God-”
“Oh my God Jaida! Shut up! You’re being so loud what if she like, walks by and overhears you?”
“That would be great! Maybe one of you would finally actually acknowledge your feelings towards each other instead of staring and drooling from across the table”
“I don’t drool. And neither does she! She doesn’t like me that way Jaida, just let it go”
Jans voice lost all enthusiasm, and it set off alarm bells in Jaida’s mind. Sometimes she surprised herself with how well she could read the girl despite how happy she acted all the damn time. If this was getting to Jan of all people, it needed to be sorted out. She was quick to engulf the blonde in a tight hug, trying to convey that no matter what happens or doesn’t happen with Jackie, she would always be there for Jan. Always.
“It’s weird I talk to you about this. You’re technically my ex” Jan laughed, void of any actual humour, as she stepped away from the hug, trying to hide the sadness in her voice.
“Maybe. But you’re my friend first. Besides, I think I am the best person to talk to about this because I have personal experience” She gave a comically over-exaggerated wink, just to get her point across.
About a year prior, the two had dated for a bit, being the only two out gay girls on the team, they figured it was how things should go. However, they quickly realised they were better as friends, though they couldn’t deny that they enjoyed their time together. Their ‘fling’ was short lived, and while they were both more than happy to stay friends, neither girl let the other forget what happened, taking any opportunity to poke fun at their past relationship. It was their own little way of preventing anything from getting awkward - if they didn’t acknowledge it, it would get weird, so they opted for the odd joke. If they could laugh it off, it meant they didn’t take the whole situation too seriously. Besides, they didn’t want to make lunch awkward.
-
The first few lessons of the day passed painfully slow for everyone. Crystal spent most of her time sneaking looks at Gigi. Jan spent the day looking forward to the first basketball practise of the year. Dahlia managed to start two rumours by accident (both about herself, somehow). Brita and Aiden had already fallen out and made up twice before the end of third period. Rock M doodled through all her lessons, hoping the teachers wouldn’t call on her - most classes were doing start-of-the-year admit tasks anyways.
When lunch rolled around for the first time that year, the girls found it easy to fall back into their well-loved routine. It was comforting really, having that one constant no matter how crazy school could get. Yeah, they might get loud, or they might fight, or fall out, but they all loved each other and made the chaos of high school so much more bearable (despite being chaotic themselves). The ten girls (Gigi and Nicky sat at another table for the day, but not without a quick hello at the beginning of the lunch hour) talked about everything under the sun, and eventually the topic of relationships came up. Crystal shied away, leaning back into her seat and hoping that she wouldn’t be asked about her love life. She was.
“You have a girlfriend, right Crystal? What was her name again?”
“It doesn’t matter, we broke up at the start of summer and before you ask yes I am ok, no you don’t need to ask any further questions, ok thank you!”
Crystal’s attempt to stop any more questions was feeble, at best, and definitely didn’t work, because now she was being flooded with questions from nine other girls about if she’s really ok, who broke up with who, why didn’t you tell any of us, are you still friends, did she break your heart, oh my god did you break her heart? She didn’t answer any of them. Until Dahlia piped up, somehow always being up to date on the drama (even if Crystal hadn’t told anyone),
“Does it have anything to do with your crush on Gigi?”
The table fell silent. Crystal turned red, but refused to acknowledge it - if she acted like the question was nothing, then it would seem like nothing. She took a deep breath.
“My what on who?”
“You heard me bitch! It’s obvious you like her” Dahlia was laughing. Crystal didn’t think it was very funny. She looked over to the table where Gigi was sat, Gigi was already looking at her, smiling.
Was it that obvious? She thought she hid it well. After all, she didn’t want anyone to know, especially Gigi herself. Thank God she couldn’t hear this.
“I don’t. She’s straight - I don’t fall for straight girls. There’s no point”
Crystal wished it was that easy.

New cover alert!!! This time, for Robby Weber’s debut YA novel If You Change Your Mind. It’s got sun, it’s got boys, it’s got a whole lot of flirting. Loved drawing this one (the style and palette were so fun) and working with my art director Gigi Lau.
Make sure to check it out, and don’t forget to preorder!
