NEW EDITOR 101: A GUIDE FOR GIFMAKERS by v @shangs

Hi friends! I know I said I would do this way back in April/May when this change was announced but I've been massively busy lately so thank you all for being patient with me :)

Based on the results of this poll, I will be trying my level best to help make a guide for gifmakers to best deal with any problems that have been present with the new editor. However, it's worth noting that I have personally not experienced any of these problems myself and I have no record of any problems from other people that I could send to staff and get guidance on, so for some of these issues I will unfortunately be a broken record.

That being said, I have been using the new editor for a few months now and it hasn't been too bad. So don't be discouraged by the new editor if you still love to make gifs and share them. You may need to adapt a bit, but it's doable!

This is meant to be comprehensive and will be explanation and image heavy. Full guide under the cut.

01. WHAT IS THE NEW EDITOR?

Some of you may be asking yourselves what the point of the new editor even is and why it's being implemented in the first place when we already had a (mostly) functional editor. My very limited understanding of it as a CS student is app compatibility and flexibility. I'm not totally clear on the details nor am I 100% certain this is the case, but NPF posts (basically, posts made with the "new editor") first started with the mobile app. I'm unsure if the different post types were simply too unwieldy to transfer to the app - having to make a whole bunch of post types when with the new editor you can now have posts with any elements you want without the rigidity of a set post type - or if it was simply not able to be implemented, but the apps have always used NPF. The majority of Tumblr users are coming from the mobile apps. Then it became a case of having the legacy editor for the web users (which were fewer in number) and the new NPF editor for everyone else. That takes resources to keep around and it's pretty inefficient. Naturally the older editor that was used by less people was going to get the axe, especially since you couldn't tell on mobile that there was even a difference between NPF or legacy posts.

So now here we are and the posts are NPF. This means they're in "Neue Post Format." Basically, every post you make is by default a text post, containing "blocks" of other media - as gifmakers we will primarily be dealing with photos.

I understand that it's frustrating to many to see "our gifs are now rendered as text posts" and ask WHY it's happening when photos should logically be rendered as photo posts - but the fact is, there's now no real delineation between a "text post" and a "photo post." The reason NPF posts are now "text posts" is because that's how they are rendered for desktop themes, not because everyone is going to see your post as text and your gifs are going to be compressed into the quality of a potato (though I know some have seen this issue - more on that later.)

02. STEPS TO TAKE BEFORE POSTING

The long and short of it is that you may have to update your theme. More detail here for those who are interested, but check that your theme supports "new editor posts" or "NPF posts" AND that this is true for original posts (you can read more about why in this ask and, although this may be a bit time-consuming, test it out on your blog). I can say with certainty that my second theme Cygnus supports original NPF posts. This is NOT true of my first theme, though.

You can try to add the NPF Fix by @glenthemes to your own theme (beware if you don't know HTML/CSS) or try this tip by @burningblake for original posts.

Feel free to add theme makers with fully NPF-compatible themes in the notes! I have been happily using my own theme so I can't say to what degree others' themes are NPF-friendly.

03. MAKING A POST

If you're sticking around to post on the new editor and you have trouble ordering your gifs around, here's a little guide on how to post.

If I click on "Photo" from web and open up the editor, here's how it looks:

I went ahead and added three full-width gifs and the editor put them in like so:

You'll most likely also have to order your gifs around in the way you want them. You can go ahead and hover over your gifs to see the button to orient them (the four dots in the top left corner) and the button for an image description (the three dots in the bottom right corner). I've attached images of all three below:

If you hold the orientation button, move your gif around until you see the blue line that shows where your gif will end up in the spot that you want it. For example, I wanted to move the second gif below the first one, so I oriented it so that the blue line would show the marker between the two gifs:

Now my gifs are oriented nicely! Of course, this is a simpler layout, but the principles still hold.

If you save your gifs as a draft and reopen them or you just notice a large gap like this in between your gifs when you're in the editor, don't worry.

This will not show up in dash view or on a desktop theme that supports original NPF posts. For example, this is how the gifs' gap (without modification) looked in my desktop theme:

With your gifs ordered, the final step is to add alt text. You can read more about alt text and why you should use it here. (Feel free to ignore the sections about the captions on the legacy editor since it is no longer relevant. It's also unnecessary to clearly mark descriptions if they're not in the caption of your post because they will clearly show up under "ALT" on Tumblr.)

If you click the three dots in the bottom right corner as seen above, and click "update image description:"

You can add the description you like and click "update." Your photos' alt text will show up under the "ALT" bubble on Tumblr. This is generally a good practice to get into to make your content more accessible, so I hope you guys will consider using alt text regularly :)

Also, I've noticed that in the editor, if you go back and edit something it will take some time to show up. You may have to refresh the page or load it again after some time, but your edits should be there. I would not go back and edit posts again if you see your posts haven't shown up. I also advise against editing your posts on mobile because it's easier to make a mistake.

And there you go, you've successfully made a post with the new editor!

04. TROUBLESHOOTING

I'm sure you've all been waiting for this. Unfortunately I am probably going to be extremely unhelpful if the editor hasn't been refined in the last few months for those experiencing issues. I'm going to go in the categories that I listed out in my original poll, but keep in mind that I haven't personally seen any of these issues on my end so I haven't been able to contact staff with any evidence that this happened other than my poll.

Dashboard view quality issues: I haven't noticed this issue. I'm not sure if this has been fixed since the original poll was posted. If you're experiencing this issue, this is not something I know how to fix so I would contact staff with screenshots of the issue.

Desktop theme side padding: As noted before, this is a theme issue. If you change themes to something that is NPF-compatible with original posts, there shouldn't be any more issues here.

Small gifs on mobile: In my experience this was happening regardless of what editor was used; it's a bug that seems to have been fixed since this poll was created. If you're still experiencing it, at the risk of sounding like a broken record, I would advise contacting staff.

New editor doesn't accept gifs of size 9.8MB < x < 10MB: I haven't experienced this issue so I would say the only workaround would be to either trim the size of your gif so that it is under 9.8MB or whatever threshold seems to be the cutoff or contact staff (I am so sorry for constantly having to suggest this 😭 unfortunately there's no trick I can offer because the new editor has been taking all my gifs just fine)

Logistical issues ordering gifsets: I hope this guide has been able to answer the majority of questions and shed some light on some of the more buggy behaviors of the new editor, but if you have any more specific questions you can feel free to shoot me an ask!

HTML issues / colored text: Unfortunately it seems colored text may be deprecated entirely? This could be for accessibility purposes because I believe screen readers would read out every single letter of gradient text in captions which I imagine can get quite frustrating for users of this technology. I recommend just using the normal rich text editor. If you want small text, you can highlight and click the <s> button!

Other: If it seems like something I may be able to answer, please feel free to ask me. Otherwise... hound staff 😭

Here's where you can hound staff, btw. If you're having major issues I would advise you guys to submit support tickets. That way if there are any widespread bugs, staff will hopefully be able to fix them.

🧊 GET READY

Set two windows side by side. Left: the original post Right: Tumblr dashboard

Locate the post which contains the gif we want to use. Make sure we are looking at the original post by the gif maker, not a reblog, or… a repost, so we won't accidentally credit the wrong person.

Click “Photo” to create a new post.

The “Legacy Editor” is switched off so that we are in the “Beta Post Editor”. EDIT: Tumblr has removed the Legacy Editor. We can skip this step from now on. -June, 2023

Click on the blank space to bring up the tools.

Click “GIF” to open the “🔍 Find a GIF” window.

🧊 INSERT GIF

Click the ●●● meatballs menu and select “Copy link”.

Right-click on “Find a GIF” and select “Paste”.

Only the first gif from the gifset shows up. It's alright, just select the gif to add it into the post.

🧊 SWAP GIF

Right-click on the gif we want and select “Copy Image Address”.

Click the ⚙️ cog menu and change the Text Editor from “Rich text” to “HTML”.

3. Highlight the gif address.

*Ignore the second part of the codes. They will adjust themselves accordingly.

4. Right-click on the highlighted texts and select “Paste”.

🧊 CHECK DIMENSION

Right-click on the gif and select “Search for Image”.

2. We can see the gif is 540 x 270. 3. Revise the width & height in the codes. 4. Click on “Preview”.

Now we click on the attribution to see if it opens up the original post in a new tab.

Yes, it does. We have successfully embedded the gif we want from the gifset.

Reminder:

Embed gifs from original posts by gif makers, so we won't accidentally credit the wrong people.

Click the ⚙️ cog menu and change the Text Editor from “Rich text” to “HTML” to swap gifs from the same gifset.

i don't have the time, so instead here's: delilah's quick little guide to making fun graphics !

first things first: i'm not a pro at this. these are simple graphics and there are likely other ways to do it and achieve the same / better results. i hope this helps ! you can always ask / dm me if you have any issues <3

this is the gif in question ! i made it using two apps: picsart and gif maker-editor.

• get your images. i used various manga panels that i found on google. (do not use fanart unless you have permission from the artist.)

• add the colour of your choice. i use picsart for this. select your image and then add your colour as a separate photo. under blend, i choose 'screen', although 'multiply' works if you want to eliminate the whites and keep the black.

• once you've done this for all of your images, put them into any app that turns images to gifs. there you can edit the speed of image switching and translate them into one cohesive gif !

Thank you love! So I use YouCut Video Editor and GIF Maker-Editor. To use youcut, it can be photos or videos so I have to use the gif editor to change my gifs to a video. I've posted a video below the cut of how I do the editing.

Dont mind all my videos🤣🤣

Here is the final product: I had to cut the recording before it showed the saved page cause an ad started to play. But I hope this helps! And if you have any questions just ask!💙

Pairing: Dark!President!Loki x Reader

Warnings: NSFW, 18+!!! This is a Dark!Loki fic hence it explores dark themes including degradation, humiliation, dub!con, spanking, dirty talk, fingering, and choking. This is based off of the Vote Loki comic + President Loki in the Loki Series hence it briefly mentions dark political themes (i.e. US politics 2016-2020), guilt/shame and there is a death threat. Read at your own risk!!

Summary: You’re the only reporter left on the campaign trail who’s willing to factcheck Loki’s lies. Unfortunately, he’s taken a keen interest in you. Set in an AU of the Vote Loki comics with Loki from the Loki 2021 TV Series. No spoilers for the Loki 2021 TV Series, but there are minor spoilers for the Vote Loki comic.

Author's Note: Yes I'm adding to the flood of President Loki fics... but I needed to get this out after watching episode 5. I'm honestly not sure where this came from- this is the darkest I've written Loki so far. Anyways I hope you enjoy and have a lovely evening!

You’d been on the campaign trail for weeks. Reporters better than you had tapped out early on but you’d bitterly refused. You had no comrades, no fellow writers in arms left. It was all Brietbart, Newsmax, and worse. The closest thing you had to an ally was the old grump from Fox.

On the upside, your work had never been more in demand. The sole reporter willing to face the oppressive measures taken by the campaign team to rid fact-based media of their press briefings. They told you the wrong room, wrong time, hell once they’d given you the wrong state. But you worked overtime to get your questions in, determined to get a sliver of truth from The God of Lies.

“What do you have to say to the victims of the recent hurricane here in Florida? They lost their homes much like those did in New York in 2013. Though I suppose you weren’t responsible for this particular-“ your mic cut out before you could finish the question. You rolled your eyes, looking to the side of the stage where the tiny blonde campaign manager had thrown aside the sound guy to get at your mic.

“Ah, what a question. From one of my favourite reporters of what is it you call it? ‘Fact-based journalism?’ That right?” Loki made air quotes with his hands, smirking down at you as a chuckle rose from the crowd.

He strolled in front of the podium, hands in his pockets. “What’s happened in Florida is truly, truly awful. Tampa in particular- that democratic senator, Howard is it? Really doing a bang up job,” he shook his head pitifully, “saw the photos of her leaving before the storm. Retreating from her own district in its time of need. Such a shame really.” The crowd in the room booed in response.

You dug your nails into your palm- you knew she was following evacuation orders, the storm had torn apart the area. Loki licked his lips and gave you a sly, pitying smile before looking out across the crowd for the next question. You sat back in your chair, keeping your back strait and handed the mic to one of the snickering assholes beside you.

The rest of the press conference was much like every other, some fact followed by glaring lies, all eagerly eaten up by the “reporters” in the room. Afterwards you beelined to the hotel bar, checking your phone for the updates on the investigation into Loki’s campaign office back in New York. A week ago you’d received a tip that Loki had orchestrated the Hydra attack that’d publicly led to his decision to run. The anonymous source came from within his own campaign office, and claimed to have a recording of him setting it up in some way. You’d sent your PI friend to go look into things and you were expecting an update very soon.

Ordering a double of Maker’s and perched yourself on the bar stool, consumed with the email your editor had sent back about your tip. All things were a go as long as it checked out. God you hoped it checked out.

It was a few hours later when you returned to your hotel room, you’d treated yourself to a steak after the mental beating you’d taken today. As you waited for your floor in the elevator you thought about taking a bath in your hotel room- it’d been a while since you’d touched yourself and you could tell you needed it, your body tense. Although the last time you did you found yourself thinking of Loki and your stomach twisted at the thought of just how fast you came.

It all started when you took the time to notice- really notice how well that fucking suit fit him. God it showed off every toned angle of his body, the vests he wore always fitted perfectly to his core. His hair- inky black, fell behind his crown in silky waves. His face- that smug fucking face. His cheekbones were framed by his horned crown, the loud piece of metal somehow accentuating them even more. His dark brows hung over the green-blue of his eyes, forever mocking you, as if you’d never be in on the joke. Jesus. You needed a vacation. Far away from The God of Lies and his loyal fans.

The elevator quietly dinged, pulling you from your thoughts and you stepped out onto your floor.

You entered the dark of your room and secured the lock on the door. Sighing, you toed off your heels at the front, throwing your purse and blazer on the bench by the door before flicking the light on.

“There you are darling. I so hate it when you make me wait,” Loki smiled from the chair in the corner of your room.

You jumped- your feet stumbling backwards. “Ah! Fuck! What the fuck!”

He chuckled and swirled the glass in his hand at the edge of the armrest. His horned crown glittered in the light of the room when he moved his head downwards, pouting though his eyes were mocking you. “Not happy to see me?”

You huffed, you’d dipped your hand behind you and into the bag and moved it around in search of the cold metal. You couldn’t feel anything except your wallet, phone, keys, and other smaller items.

“Looking for this?” In a flash of green Loki held your pistol in his free hand, aiming it directly at you. He smiled, lifting the drink in his other hands up to his lips for a sip.

Your heart was racing now. “Okay,” you lifted your hands up, “Okay. I’m sorry- no more guessing. What do you want?”

He tilted his head at you, his eyes running over your figure before snapping back up to your own. You’d never admit it but you felt your core pulse at the sight of his blue-green eyes taking you in.

“Sit,” he motioned to the bed, “relax. I just want to talk.” He looked at the gun for a moment, his eyes flickering to you as he disappeared it in a flash of green.

You took a breath then moved to the bed, keeping your front to him before perching yourself on its edge. At least the gun was gone. For now.

“Good girl,” he smiled. “I so admire your drive, your will to try and take me down. You’ve been the only one from those so-called reporters you choose to associate with to stick with the job. I’ve enjoyed our banter on the campaign trail so far.”

Again you felt your body respond to his words, particularly a the way his deep voice enunciated “good girl.” You inwardly chastised yourself, and swallowed dryly. “I wouldn’t exactly call it banter-“ you started but he silenced you with a finger.

He sighed, “but you had to go sticking your nose where it didn’t belong. So what was there to do? You’d already told your editor and your PI of the lies this poor, deranged staffer decided to spread.”

Your eyes widened at that- he knew. Fuck! You frowned, how could he have found out?

“It’s hard to keep something from The God of Lies,” he smirked, “especially in his own house. Though I do applaud your efforts. As I was saying,” he took another sip of his drink, “what was there to do? Kill you?” He laughed, “now that would look bad. Very bad indeed. Besides, I do so enjoy our banter,” he put a heavy emphasis on the last word.

“So, I decided to put my money where my mouth is. I- well not me exactly but Angela, who’s been heading Ophidia Holdings, bought you.” He finished his drink and disappeared the glass in another flash of green.

You frowned. “What? You can’t buy me,” you laughed, shaking your head.

“Oh but I did. You see I own you. I own your editor, your publisher, hell I bought the network.” He got up from his chair to step in front of you, his hands behind his back as he beamed at you.

“But you can’t do that- people will know, people will care!” You shouted, getting up from the bed.

He laughed, “oh you naive little thing. First, we did it through a shell company of a shell company- very hard to trace. Second, if anyone found out, I honestly don’t think they’ll care. In fact, I think it may increase your dwindling ratings. Really, you should be thanking me.”

You were in his face now. “I won’t let you do this. I’ll go to someone- I’ll go to the Avengers. I’ll go to Thor!”

In the blink of an eye he’d grabbed your shoulders, turning you both so he could press you firmly against the wall, his hand coming to grip your throat. “Do you not realise how insignificant you are to me?” His hands flickered from your eyes to your lips, his breath hot against your skin. Your breathing was laboured, your thighs clenching together at the feel of his firm body pressed against you, his long fingers curled against your skin.

He tilted his head, a sly smile spreading across his lips. “My, my. You dirty little thing. You’re excited by this aren’t you?”

Another wave of heat pulsed through your core and you shuddered, swallowing once more you felt something stir along the inside of your thigh. The fact that jikook is being pushed during performances kinda stresses me out and would rather they didn’t. The reason I say this is because the only jikook content we’ve been getting recently is during performances, which is choreographed. (not including run, because there’s really nothing of substance there recently, I know 122 but still wasn’t much, even though they were on the same team. jk being satellite jeon, but in general jk was focused, jm messed around with Yoongi and Jin, & vice versa but they were both more into doing their task of directing yj

The main reason and adding onto my first point is that it helps fuel the ‘jikook is fanservice’ and I’ve seen it be used ALOT recently, like a lot a lot and I can’t exactly hate them for saying that (unless they’re being extremely toxic while saying it) because while jm and jk’s relationship is NOT fanservice, they are pretty central during performances recently. I’m also tired of dynamite nan nanana, vm always changes their opening section, very rarely does jikook change theirs, and when they do they just look at each other when the other is doing a little dance, but it’s one or the other. It’s very noticeable, even my best friend who’s not a shipper has said “big hit be pushing two big ships covid must be giving big hit a hit, gotta use those money makers” she said it jokingly but she was serious about the pushing part, she also doesn’t know I’m a jikooker. Anon who said increase in tk content is right, but not for interviews or carpet, because what kind of ‘content’ is that?? Not even the break the silence commentary because everyone in the middle were cuddling, tj, even ji/h the most. But runs? Yeah, in a way. The most obvious one: Big hit cuts out jikook’s ‘guess the dance’ by touch in run 117, which I found a little fanservicy as a whole, it was just weird. Cont’ 117 Big hit leaves in all the others and show tk’s x2 additionally in 116 they went with the little hearts in the editor caption with talking about tk. I don’t believe everything that has been happening recently is not deliberate. We’re okay seeing jikook onstage, dynamite we find it cute, and we believe that they’re doing so for a reason, the possibly they are actually together and they’re slowly trying to show so to speak. And at the same time tkkers want tk offstage, main example be-hind story. because of their ‘big hit is hiding tk’ agenda they feel validated when they get their offstage content because they believe it’s on tk’s terms, hence the tk live$ video that one anon mentioned. It’s a win win for big hit, but it’s going to bite them in the ass sooner or later. But at the end of the day this is just my own opinions, pretty long ones though. Sorry!

We watched jikook choreo their two little duet spots in Dynamite. The dynanana part no matter how much we see it still is far more satisfying to a shipper than any hand slap or look TK throw into their intro. Many of us say jikook ship themselves and the choices they made in Dynamite fuel that idea. It was fanservicey type stuff that they willing and happily put into their content.

Run (and anything else)...watch the background to find jikookery. It’s the stuff the editors don’t comment on that is sometimes most compelling. And we don’t know why some jikook stuff is cut, but I’m not willing to dismiss the guys not wanting it in at times. Yes stills can be revealing but sometimes videos that should be innocent hit in unintended ways. Like the Run ep below.

BigHit hiding TK is a fantasy at this point . TK said with their own mouths they aren’t hanging out as much after work.

Jimin has said with his mouth that he does see Jungkook after work and Jungkook did not dispute that at all.

So until Tae and JK start talking about their after work time together nothing is validated for TK. It’s still all a fan narrative.

At the end of the day people can ship who they want how they want, but I think when you have to trash a member to propel your ship content then you’ve crossed a line.

VI. RELATIONSHIPS

Brother: Jacob Mallow Parker

Before his disappearance they had good relations. Or at least as good as siblings can have. They were both very close to their father. Lizzie looked up to Jacob and he always kept her out of trouble when it came to dealing with their mother.

After he vanished she felt betrayed and lonely. For years she was angry at him for leaving her but with time she calmed down and started her search for him because he missed him and wanted to have a family again.

Father: Anthony “Tony” Parker

Half-blood wizard, worked as a Magizoologist, specialised in winged horses and wrote three books on the subject (one about each: Abraxan, Aethonan and Granian). His lifetime dream was to wrote one last book - about Thestrals.

A Hufflepuff, he was a kind and thoughtful man. Loved his children and wife more than anything in the world. Known for his patience and open mind. He may or may not have adopt a wild Kneazle and keep him in his backyard when his kids were little.

Jacob’s disappearance completely broke his spirit, to the point that he became a shell of his past self. He barely spoke and almost never left his office. He died under unknown circumstances when Lizzie was in her fifth year at Hogwarts. At least that was what her mother told her.

Mother: Eileen Parker (née Rowle)

Very proud and distinguished woman raised in a pureblood family. Although she never had very good relations with her children she had high hopes for Jacob. After his disappearance she basically ignored Lizzie every time she was coming back for summer.

Even thought her family wasn’t obsessed with pureblood supermacy as much as other members of the Sacred Twent-Eight (they allowed marrying half-bloods) she still lost majority of her relatives due to first wizardimg war as they were followers of Voldemort. She truly believed his vision and wanted to join them as well but her brothers forbid it.

After Lizzie’s graduates from Hogwarts she never really contacts her mother to the point she doesn’t even know that Eileen vanishes after Voldemort’s return and joins the Death Eaters.
