My issues with chain of thorns aside, Thomas' come out was so fucking funny bc of how in character all the interactions were
Thomas, being the dramatic queen he is, simply decided to yell it out to his whole family without preamble and completely out of the blue that he's in love with a dude
Gideon ,our clueless sweetheart (bless his heart, he's trying), was like I wanna be supportive but I dont understand wtf is going on.you're in love? with carstairs? when did THAT happen? Help
Eugenia, another huge-ass dramatic queen, was like YALL HEARD HIM MOTHERFUCKERS,YOUR OPTIONS HERE ARE ACCEPTANCE OR ACCEPTANCE
And sophie, our always practical babe, was like enough chit chat all of you. When is son in law coming for dinner?

PROMPT: HUG
She looked at them, gazing from a distance. Her son and the warlock.
Her firstborn, her eldest, the one who made her a mother. Her beautiful blue-eyed boy, with the deft hands and big heart. Her Alec.
If there was anything she could thank Robert for, it was the children.
Isabelle with her fiery passion, poor Max. A pain that would never go away. And Jace, the boy they'd taken in, a son in every sense but blood. And Alec.
She knew. She'd known, deep down, that Alec suppressed things. She shouldn't have been surprised when he fell for Magnus and said nothing about it, least of all because he was a man.
She saw them laugh together, Alec's eyes crinkling the way they always did. Laughter suited him. Magnus managed to coax a chuckle out of him as no one ever did. She may have had her qualms about Bane, but she was thankful for everything he'd done for them, for Alec most of all.
Magnus kissed Alec's cheek and Alec blushed. The redness overtook his features like a tide and Magnus grinned, pleased. He kissed him again, on the lips this time. Alec was still blushing, but kissed him back with equal fervor.
She smiled to herself. She regretted everything they'd made Alec go through, for the sake of appeasing them. Of appeasing Robert most of all, but she knew she was apportioned some of the blame as well. She'd never made a move to tell him it was okay; it was okay to not live up to our expectations, it's okay to not be exactly what your father wants you to be, it's okay to break down and take a breath. He was the oldest, and hefted the responsibility like a true soldier. She knew he would make a wonderful father someday. He'd turned out a wonderful man, after all. Thanks to his own merits.
They were still wrapped up in each other, an embrace wherein no one could tell where Alec ended and Magnus began. She looked away, giving them their privacy. She'd yearned for that sort of love, once — now, she felt privileged to see her children experience it.
She heard a crash; they'd knocked over a plant on the windowsill. They were laughing again, breathless. Alec righted the pot, still grinning, and Magnus entrapped him in a hug. Alec did not make to move away; he leaned against the warlock, relaxed and at ease. He'd never been this calm as a child, or as a teen. He'd never been this happy.
Maryse saw them stay like that, swaying and murmuring sweet nothings to each other, planting soft kisses in the slanting light of the sun where they thought no one could see them and their affection. But Maryse saw, and understood. She knew. She'd always known. It was why she'd went so far as to leave a voice message to Magnus herself, when the two had broken up. She really had always known.
Alec deserved every bit of happiness and joy he got. The Clave saw his love as wrong in all sorts of ways: Magnus was a man, Magnus was a Downworlder. But she'd gotten over all that, and Robert was on his way there. As cheesy as it sounded, Alec and Magnus belonged together.
They were still hugging. Maryse smiled softly and left, vowing the same old vow: I will protect him. It was the first thing she'd thought to herself when he was born. And it was what she thought every time she saw him.
He didn't really need protecting anymore. But she would do so anyway, in any way she was able. Her protection, for his safety: it was like a hug to him of her own.

Alastember - day 2 - hurt/comfort
Today, I thought I should bring back Gideon bonding with Alastair and adopting him since it's been a while since I've written or read anything like that. This one is set in the canon universe although I've kind of ignored that CoT has to happen somewhere. @alastair-appreciation-month
‘You’re early, Alastair. Thomas isn’t yet back from the devil tavern.’
Gideon Lightwood had opened the door to the Lightwood residence and it seemed like he was home alone, just as Alastair had counted on. He’d agreed to meet Thomas today for dinner, but after considering his options for a long time he’d decided to come early.
‘I know,’ Alastair said. ‘But I thought I should speak with you if that’s okay.’
Alastair and Thomas had been together for several months now, and Alastair had never been happier. And yet there were things bothering him. The way that despite his father being dead, he couldn’t seem to stop haunting Alastair. The nightmares, the way he could randomly fall back into the past when he was reminded, the way he never quite felt safe, not even when he was in Thomas’ arms. The way he still struggled to enjoy things the way he used to, even though Thomas had encouraged him to try playing music again.
Then Thomas had told Alastair the story of his grandfather, Benedict Lightwood. To Thomas and the others of his generation, the story of Benedict “Lightworm” turning into a worm was a funny story, something Will Herondale told the children at every occasion he could. But Benedict Lightwood had been Gideon’s father too and Alastair didn’t think it was a funny story to him. And perhaps, if Gideon was still here and thriving so many years after losing his father in such a horrible way, then maybe Alastair could too. Maybe Gideon could help him figure out how.
‘Of course, come in. What did you want to speak about?’
‘It’s complicated, I’ll explain it inside.’
Gideon made them both some tea and Alastair was relieved there were no scones. They seemed to be a part of every English tea, and Alastair was getting tired of them fast.
‘I am glad you came, Alastair,’ Gideon said. ‘I am happy for you and Thomas, and I do not mind at all that you two love each other.’
‘Thank you,’ Alastair said. ‘I was wondering… What was it like for you when your father died? I heard the story from Tom, but I can’t imagine… How did you move on from that?’
‘That is a difficult question, Alastair,’ Gideon said. ‘Truth to be told, I’m not quite sure how I moved on. If I did. I can still hear him in my head some days, although that is becoming less and less often.’
‘What does he say?’
‘It’s not really a voice I hear, just my own thoughts,’ Gideon said. ‘I think of what he’d say to me, if he saw me now. My mother died when I was very young, so for a large part of my childhood, my father was all I had. The things he said to me stuck. I really had to work to not become him when I realized what an awful man he was.’
‘I still have my mother,’ Alastair said. ‘But I think it’s the same for me, in some ways. My father died and I thought it’d make things easier. I thought I’d finally be free of him. But I’m not.’
‘I understand you didn’t have a good relationship with your father, Alastair?’
‘He was a drunk,’ Alastair spat out. ‘He cared for nothing beyond his bottle. Certainly not for me. I spent most of my life cleaning up his messes. And then I gave up on him, I didn’t drag him home from a bar like I’d done so many times before. One night, he never came home.’
‘As I understand, you spent that night following Thomas, protecting him?’ Gideon asked.
‘Yes. I’d chosen Thomas over him. And I can’t bring myself to regret it. Part of me is glad he’s dead, part of me feels like he deserved it. But no one deserves this, do they?’
‘I don’t think they do. Did my father deserve to turn into a worm and then be killed by my brother? Maybe not, but it was a grave he’d dug for himself over many years. Don’t blame yourself for what happened to your father, Alastair. It should never have been your responsibility to see him home safely.’
‘I know you’re right,’ Alastair said. ‘But I don’t feel it. I can barely keep track of what I’m feeling and it’s getting harder to not let it show. I just don’t understand how to do this anymore. I honestly don’t feel like a human being. Thomas is kind, and I’m happy to have him, but it’s not enough.’
‘Maybe you need more time,’ Gideon said. ‘It took time for me too. There are still days where I feel like I never could escape him. But I have Sophie, I have Gabriel, our friends. I think that’s the most important thing, for you to have support of the people around you and be able to talk about what you feel.’
‘Thomas helps me,’ Alastair said. ‘But I don’t think it’s enough.’
‘You are always welcome here to talk,’ Gideon said. ‘You’re not alone, and maybe it’s easier for you to talk to someone with a similar experience.’
‘Your father was much worse than mine, it seems hardly fair.’
‘I don’t know if he was. Your father and mine were very different people, and the way he mistreated you was different, I don’t think there’s a point in comparing who had it worse. He hurt you, and you didn’t deserve any of it and now you have to figure out a way to process it all.’
‘I hate how weak it makes me,’ Alastair said. ‘All I ever wanted was to be strong so I could keep the people I love safe, but now I don’t think that I can. I’m so scared I’ll just break down at the worst moments and I can’t escape. I’ve been avoiding social functions, though I never liked these anyway.’
‘You’re not weak. I think you’re very strong to have come to me, and I admire how you’ve held on for so long, how you dared show Thomas your vulnerability. I have faith in you, Alastair. Do you feel it coming when you break down?’
‘Usually I do,’ Alastair said. ‘But I can’t just walk out during big social functions or enclave meetings.’
He’d been avoiding enclave meetings anyway because of Charles. After everything that had happened between them, he’d avoided his ex at every cost. Alastair didn’t think he could bear seeing him anymore. He felt so disgusted with himself for believing that was love, for sleeping with Charles, giving him everything. Last Alastair had heard, Charles had been having a hard time in politics. Looking back, Charles had always been insecure deep down. Part of him believed he was better and more capable than everyone else and he’d needed Alastair to validate him and make him feel good about himself, with no care for Alastair’s own well being. Alastair hoped Charles failed at becoming consul. Not just for petty revenge, Charles as consul would genuinely be disastrous for many shadowhunters.
‘Shadowhunters are not so understanding of the difficulties some of us face,’ Gideon said with a sigh. ‘We’re expected to be strong all the time and unaffected by the emotional scarring mundanes struggle with. It’s not true, but I think it will be difficult to find understanding among some. So I’d recommend you surround yourself with the people who do understand and can give you space to recover.’
‘I never had friends before now,’ Alastair said. ‘I’ve been spending time with Kamala and Eugenia too, and they’ve been kind, but it still feels weird being around other people at all, having them know me.’
‘It’s good that you have friends. This is not a burden you should bear by yourself.’
The door opened and Thomas walked in, eyes wide in surprise to find Alastair there.
‘I didn’t realize you were here. I’m so sorry, I was still at the Devil tavern.’
‘It’s fine,’ Alastair said. ‘I was here to speak to your father.’
‘Oh. Okay, that’s great. Would you like to go for a walk?’
Although marriage was not an option for them, Thomas still insisted on courting Alastair, although perhaps a bit more covert. Going on walks together, carriage rides. Thomas sent flowers to his house and complimented his mother on her tea. Alastair had always thought the whole courting process excessive and exhausting and with Charles he’d gone pretty much straight to sleeping together once they’d established their mutual attraction. He was surprised to find himself liking it. The attention made him feel special, appreciated. He loved being on the receiving end of such affections.
‘Yes, of course,’ Alastair said. ‘It was nice talking to you, Mr. Lightwood.’

chot asks!
i'm very curious to hear your thoughts on how [redacted] and [redacted] relationship may or may not change after [redacted]. do you have any headcanons or ideas?
**SPOILER WARNING**
original ask:
i'm very curious to hear your thoughts on how will and gabriel's relationship may or may not change after kit's death. do you have any headcanons or ideas?
//
this is such a good question! thanks for asking anon!
Their relationship is so interesting given their past and how their shared person is Cecily and all that so i definitely think their relationship is heavily reliant on keeping up that banter even though it's just for show at this point.
BUT I don't see Gabriel being able to do that for a long time after Kit's death. I think Will can recognize that and probably doesn't even try to play pranks or jokes or banter because he knows it won't land the way he intends for it to. (I have hope that 43-year-old Will can read a fucking room at this point).
I also think Will easily recognizes what Gabriel is doing in terms of repressing his own feelings in favor of Cecily's. This is where I think the actual brothers-in-law part of their relationship really comes into play. Will, I think, would put the effort into making sure Gabriel is okay alongside his sister because obviously Cecily really needs Gabriel and if Gabriel doesn't take care of himself too then he can't take care of Cecily. (Vice versa when Gabriel finally does break down later on since Gabrily is a very balanced, equal relationship IMO).
So some things I think that happen are:
Will handles the actual paperwork/bureaucracy of Kit's funeral for them so that they just take the time to themselves and Anna+Alex.
Will and Gideon pack and send their belongings from their London home to their home in Idris, since I don't think Gabriel or Cecily ever return to the London home.
Various family members, including Will, stop by regularly to make sure they're all eating and sleeping well. (I do also think Gabriel and Cecily did the same thing for Gideon and Sophie when they lost Barbara. There is no imbalance of love or unfairness in this family whatsoever besides, obviously, the fact that Lightwoods never catch a fucking break.)
Additionally, I think that the first person that Alex lets hold him after his parents+sister is his Uncle Will. Partially because of how much Will looks like Cecily, so Alex recognizes that familiarity and comfort because this man looks like his mother. So Will offers to watch Alex often for Gabriel and Cecily.
So there's my thought on that matter-- not necessarily any real material change in their relationship (since we know they do work well together and as partners), but more of a shift in emphasis for an extended period of time given the circumstances.
After a couple of years, I think, they slowly start to banter again. And I also really hope Will never calls Gabriel a Lightworm again. Christopher died a hero with the Lightwood name, and I don't think Will would disrespect his nephew like that.

Can you share a snippet from your wips? A happy one pls
Of course! This one's still a very rough draft, so some things will most likely change, but I think you can get an idea as to what the bones of the fic are:
“All right family,” Will said with a tone of incredible formality. He scanned the faces of everyone present as he spoke. “You may be wondering why I have gathered you all here toda— Where is everyone?” he said, exasperated as he looked around to see who was missing, “I’m seeing two out of five Lightwood offspring,” he said. “Cecily, where are your children?”
Cecily rolled her eyes. “Kit went to help Anna with something.”
“Something more important than this family?” Will asked, astonished.
“By the Angel, Will. They have lives. It’s not as if everything they do depends on whether you want to cluster us all together in the parlor or not.”
Will scoffed, “Well, Cecy, I’m sorry that I wanted there to be some union between our families. But I guess I shouldn’t have expected that much from the Lightworms.” He said, receiving a glare from Gabriel. “Sophie, Gideon, where is Eugenia?”
“She’s helping Anna as well,” Sophie said.
Will threw his hands up. “Why don’t we all just meet at Anna’s then, as it seems half of the Lightwood clan is already there?”
“I don’t think we’ll fit,” Gideon said. “It’s quite a small flat.” Sophie put a hand on Gideon shoulder and shook her head, as if to say to him that Will was being sarcastic.
Will ignored Gideon and turned to Henry. “Henry, your entire family is missing. Where is Charles?”
Henry—who had been tinkering with some contraption—looked up, his expression blank. Will sighed. “I don’t know why I even try.” he mumbled.
“Sorry about that.” Charlotte said rushing in, her face pale. She had excused herself a while earlier. “Did I miss anything since I left?”
“Only Will scolding everyone for not being here.” Tessa said,
“Well, this is appalling. I’m very disappointed in all of you today—except for you Thomas.”
Thomas shrugged.

also about gabriel wedding, gideon conceived very quickly maybe not even months post wedding as Barbara is a year post wedding, so what if Will was like "hey lightworm no rush with the baby making" hahaha also at some point both tessa and cecily were pregnant at the same time
YEAH sometimes I think about how all the TID women were pregnant around the same time and get emotional about it. I especially love the idea of Tessa watching everyone else have babies and going AAAAAA because she was last and only got to see it from the outside for a while. Also Cecily canonically had a tough pregnancy with Anna, so I like to imagine all the other TID girls taking care of her during that timeframe.

Thomastair is Chot's great highlight aren't they?
Alastair stole my heart on this book, and even their drama is hilarious
Alastair self sabotaging: Oh no Thomas we can't, your friends will never accept us, especially Matthew
Matthew: Im actually fine with it bruh. My life is a dumpster fire and I've seen weirder shit happen
James: I'm your brother in law, ding dong
Kit: my crush is currently in jail, I really don't have the moral high ground to judge anyone. And I wouldn't anyway
Alastair: Oh... well, Thomas you couldn't possibly want me, wretched being that I am
Thomas: *being the embodiment of the homer simpson-going-down-a-staircase-on-a- wedding gown meme when it comes to alastair since day fucking one* I want you baby
Alastair: are you sure? Like sure, sure? I'm bad for you
Thomas: I AM SURE, I LIKE BAD (and no, you're not)
Alastair: gay panicking and sweating cause the excuses ran out
Thomas: all ready and willing to spend the rest of his days with alastair and have his persian babies
Sophiedeon: We love you, but BITCH CALM THE FUCK DOWN

what do you dislike more of it? I find a bit strange the only blood uncle" when Gideon is right there and Cecily seemed to have a good relation with him in Clockwork Princess as both were the outsiders.
The part where Cecily says "I thought our parents had the greatest love story in our family" when said parents canonically neglected her from age 10 to 15.
Your part is a close second, I am quite indifferent to Gideon but totally ignoring his existence is wild.
EDIT: And also where Cecily says about Gabriel "He's a Lightworm" like WTF????

Clockwork Princess - Cassandra Clare
( The infernal devices - book 3/3 )
17th February 2023
"Unfortunately, you may have to delay your plans for sororicide a bit longer. Gabriel Lightwood is downstairs, and I have two words for you. Two of your favourite words, at least when you put them together." "Utter simpleton'?" Inquired Will. "Worthless upstart'?" Jem grinned. "Demon pox" he said.
"Father..." Gabriel began. "Father is a worm." ... "What do you mean, Gabriel? What did father do?" Gabriel shook his head. "He's a worm," he said again ... "You're not listening to me," he said. "He's a worm. A worm. A bloody great serpentlike thing..." ... "I don't suppose it would be possible," said Henry into the silence, "to, er, step on him?" ... "... A great blind worm like a dragon out of a legend..." "Ah," said Henry. "Too big to be stepped on, then."
"... a certified idiot ..."
"I do not want to live half a life-"
"There is more to living than not dying,"
"Help me to understand you."
"Jem-Jem is all the better part of myself..." ... "Then what am I?" Cecily asked. Will exhaled, ... "You are my weakness." "And Tessa is your heart," she said, ...
" ... I suppose we all want things we cannot have."
... haste of a man with the devil at his heels.
" ... However little use you may find us, we are cleverer and more determined and more patient than men. Men may be stronger, but it is women who endure."
"Most people are lucky to have even one great love in their life. You have found two."
"Who am I?" he whispered. "For years I pretended I was other than I was, and then I gloried that I might return to the truth of myself, only to find there is no truth to return to..."
Will let his cutlery clatter onto his plate. "The Consul? Breaking up our breakfast time? Whatever next? The Inquisitor over for tea? Picnics with the Silent Brothers?" "Duck pies in the park," said Jem under his breath, ..."
"There is more to life than surviving,"
"... Gabriel Lightworm over here." Will jerked his chin towards the other boy. "Sorry. Lightwood."
... it must be terrifying to be so intertwined with another person, ..."
"It is a very strange thing, to be in love," he said. "It changes you."
How could three people who cared for one another so much cause one another so much pain?
No one understands what you feel but me, and no one understands what I feel but you, so can we not feel together?
In all the world, you are what I love the most.
"Every heart has its own melody," he said. "You know mine."
"... Our hearts, they need a mirror, ... We see our better selves in the eyes of those who love us. And there is a beauty that brevity alone provides."
"... I love you now more desperately, this moment, than I have ever loved you before, and in an hour I will love you more than that..."
"... You endure what is unbearable, and you bear it. That is all."
Forever and ever, my brother, hail and farewell.
"I cannot leave you to face death alone," Will whispered, ... "I am not alone," he said. "Wherever we are, we are as one."
"If there is a life after this one," he said, "let me meet you in it, James Carstairs."
Magnus shrugged. "It is not my responsibility now, nor will it ever be my responsibility, to manage wayward Shadowhunters..."
"A very magnanimous statement, Gideon," said Magnus. "I'm Gabriel." Magnus waved a hand. "All Lightwoods look the same to me-"
"This is a powder that when applied to the air causes ghosts to become visible," Henry said. Magnus tilted the jar of shining grains up to the lamp admiringly, ... "And in addition to its practical uses, it would seem to work for cosmetic purposes. This powder would make my very skin glimmer for eternity." ... "I could shine at will!" Magnus grinned at Henry.
"... We are not our parents, ... We do not have to carry the burden of their choices or their sins..."
"... We are ever capable of change and ever capable of being our better selves."
You could not lose something you had never had.
Life was an uncertain thing, and there were some moments one wished to remember, to imprint upon one's mind that the memory might be taken out later, like a flower pressed between the pages of a book, and admired and recollected anew.
"Please forgive me, ... but I must go and murder the cook. I shall be directly back."
"Do not seek revenge and call it justice."
"I cannot separate selfishness from selflessness now..."
"You're a person like me. You are like me. You say the things I think but never say out loud. You read the books I read. You love the poetry I love. You make me laugh with your ridiculous songs and the way you see the truth of everything. I feel like you can look inside me and see all the places I am odd or unusual and fit your heart around them, for you are odd and unusual in just the same way." ... "We are the same."
"... I am catastrophically in love with you."
"... I am not anybody's, ... My heart is my own. It is beyond you to control it. It has been beyond me to control it."
"There are so many worse things than death," he said. "Not to be loved or not to be able to love: that is worse..."
"... I shall fight by your side, and if we go down, we go down together. For I too, wish an honourable death, like Boadicea."
Jem gripped his staff and swung it hard, ... Will struck with his blade, ... "I like that stick of yours," he said. "It's a staff." Jem swung out to knock another automaton sideways. "Made by the Iron Sisters, only for Silent Brothers." Will lunged forward, ... "Anyone can sharpen a stick." "It's a staff," Jem repeated, and saw Will's quicksilver smile out of the corner of his eye... "Whatever you say, James," said Will. "Whatever you say."
"... We all have our secrets that we keep because we do not want to hurt the people who love us."
Jem was alive, but he was changed; he lived, but was lost.
"Have faith in yourself. You can be your own mirror."
You are not the last dream of my soul. You are the first dream, the only dream I ever was unable to stop myself from dreaming.
"I should have known I'd find you out here, doing your best to turn yourself into an icicle," Magnus said, descending the steps until he stood beside Will,...
"... It is not easy to be different, and even less so to be unique. But I begin to think I was never meant for an easy road."
