Mad Scientist Iriya: Hey Natsume, I went ahead and removed your teen brother's brain from his mangled corpse after his horrific traffic accident and put it into this freakish alien technology for my deranged experiments. I hope that's alright.

Natsume, totally unphased that his boss somehow got a hold of his teen brother's corpse and did this: It's fine, I'll make him an android body since it seems like it would be a fate worse than death for him to be trapped inside of his own consciousness forever.

Mad Scientist Iriya: Perfect, I knew I could count on you. Hey, since you're here anyway, how about you make 2 android bodies so I can try to hook up this other, identical piece of alien technology? You know, for other dubious experiments.

Natsume: You got it professor. I'm nothing if not a professional.

Mad Scientist Iriya: Perfect! A little weird you made them both look like your little brother, but it's no matter. Now then, time to fill this other alien brain case.

Natsume: Cool. Whose brain? Someone else in my family who recently died in a horrible accident?

Mad Scientist Iriya: You think I should put a brain into this other brain case? No no, this time I'm going to inject some mysterious goo I scraped off the underside of a spaceship!

Mad Scientist Iriya: Surely, nothing bad will happen! But wouldn't it be so crazy if this goo ended up being AI (?????) and immediately possessed one of the androids you made and broke out of containment and went on to kill you and destroy Tokyo in an afternoon?

Natsume: That would be pretty crazy, professor. Hey, is it just me or is something possessing one of my androids right now?

This is literally the sequence of events that kickstarted the entire plot of Ex-Arm.

The Chainsaw Man anime isn't good just because it's based on arguably the best battle manga of all time, though that is true.

It's not good just because it uses the medium of animation to do things Tatsuki Fujimoto could never have done in manga, though that is also true.

It's also good because of how it integrates CGI into its animation. In this way, it's trying to bring something new to the medium that elevates it beyond merely being a good adaptation of great source material.

And more importantly, Chainsaw Man is a perfect counterargument against people who act like CGI in anime is an automatic negative.

I'm only like 40% joking there. Those kinds of arguments—not always in such absolute terms, but generally used in ways that don't make sense with nuance—are annoyingly common. They are also very obviously wrong.

And yes, I've seen Berserk (2016), Gibiate, Handshakers, Ex-Arm, etc; more precisely, I've seen enough clips from those series to understand why those series are considered examples of butt-ugly CGI. And they are! But traditionally-animated series can also be butt-ugly in their own distinct way.

So far, when CGI has been incorporated into anime well, it's mostly been in ways that are either easy to overlook or easy to dismiss—not always bad or ugly (though some are), but at best good in different ways than traditional sakuga. You can't compare apples and oranges, which makes it hard to argue against apple fanboys who say oranges are always trash. Thus, anime CGI has broadly been held up to the Arc System Works standard—how hard is it to tell that it's not hand-drawn?

But Chainsaw Man's CGI isn't that. MAPPA's animators aren't trying to hide the fact that the titular...devil/human/dude is animated with CGI, or that many of the people around him are. If you know what to look for, the CGI is obvious. If you know what to look for, the traditional animation in the same frame is obvious.

But if you're being a medium nerd instead of a huge nerd—that is, if you're paying attention to the fight choreography and not little animation details—none of it feels out of place.

The CGI feels part of the same world as the traditionally-animated characters and as the backgrounds (which I'm not a colossal enough nerd to have been paying attention to). It's composited way better than the traditionally-animated characters and background of most older anime—not even the shittiest-anime-of-199X contenders, just the Sturgeon's Law bunch.

My hat's off to the compositing team at MAPPA who pulled all of this together. Also the animators, CGI and traditional, who made the assets that the compositors compiled. Also the VFX and SFX artists, the voice actors, the writers, musicians, directors, etc.

Spy×Family has some competition this season.

What I'm Watching, Spring 2023 Anime Season

New Stuff:

Oshi no Ko (My Star) - I don't want to say anything about this in case it spoils someone. What the actual fuck. Watching.

Edomae Elf (Otaku Elf) - I've been asking for elf-in-real-world aesthetic for a while. There doesn't appear to be like, a plot, but I like the idea!

Isekai de Cheat Skill wo Te ni Shita Ore wa, Genjitsu Sekai wo mo Musou Suru: Level Up wa Jinsei wo Kaeta (I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World and Became Unrivaled in The Real World, Too) - With a light novel title like that, I needed to at least see what's going on. If it gets boring I'll drop it.

Isekai One Turn Kill Neesan: Ane Douhan no Isekai Seikatsu Hajimemashita (My One-Hit Kill Sister) - It's not exactly a super creative twist on the formula (there was one with the guy's mom before) but what the hell, there's some potential quality here. Sticking with it for now or until it crosses over the Rule D line.

Jigokuraku (Hell's Paradise) - It's MAPPA, I basically owe them a watch no matter what. Plus there's always room for at least one edgy anime in my lineup each season.

Kaminaki Sekai no Kamisama Katsudou - I went in expecting this to be bad (like, BAD bad) but I'm so perplexed that I guess I'll watch some more? Worst CGI this side of Gibiate though.

Kanojo ga Koushaku-tei ni Itta Riyuu (The Reason Why Raeliana Ended up at the Duke's Mansion) - This is a cross between the Villainess and Reincarnated as a Nobody microgenres. I don't feel like I know much at all about the characters after one episode, but I want to see where they take the concepts.

Kimi wa Houkago Insomnia (Insomniacs After School) - Slow and cute and relatable. I'm told it gets emotional later. Anyway I'm in.

My Home Hero - Another candidate for edgy show of the season. I didn't expect so much suspense.

Skip to Loafer (Skip and Loafer) - Small town girl in the big city, odd couple, wholesome romance... yeah this might be just right for me.

Tengoku Daimakyou (Heavenly Delusion) - I thought this would be science fiction social commentary time. Maybe it is, but it's interesting one way or another.

Yamada-kun to Lv999 no Koi wo Suru (Loving Yamada at Lv999) - This is looking interesting! A lot of style and things going on.

Otonari ni Ginga (A Galaxy Next Door) - This originally wasn't on my list at all due to "children" and "show about making manga". I decided to give it a shot in the end and it's cute enough with just enough of a hook that maybe I'll actually like it.

Dead Mount Death Play - Another latecomer to my list. It impressed me with the premise and action scenes in the first episode, and I'm still looking forward to more reverse Isekai.

Sequels:

Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story Season 2 - Hell yeah, more lesbians doing wacky golf.

Dr. Stone: New World - Bill Nye the Caveman Guy on a boat? Sure!

Kimetsu no Yaiba: Katanakaji no Sato-hen (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc) - It's more Demon Slayer, everyone is watching this.

Carryovers:

Kubo-san wa Mob wo Yurusanai (Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible) - The most I've been able to deal with a bulli anime, due to barely being that. Delayed across seasons due to COVID.

Itai no wa Iya nano de Bougyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu. 2 (BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense. Season 2) - More of the same, but still good. Delayed across seasons due to COVID.

Kidou Senshi Gundam: Suisei no Majo Season 2 (Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury Season 2) - My first real foray into GUNDAM, carrying on from Fall 2022.

Hall of Shame (things I dropped after one episode):

Boku no Kokoro no Yabai Yatsu (The Dangers in My Heart) - The main character self-identifies as a school shooter and they put him in social cringe situations. I didn't even make it through episode 1.

Mahou Shoujo Magical Destroyers - Over the top magical girl parody! If only it was good!

Presentato da Netflix il primo trailer ufficiale di “Exception”, l’originale horror sci-fi diretto da Yuzo e sceneggiato da Hirotaka “Otsuichi” Adachi (My Capricorn Friend, Summer Ghost, Goth), che in streaming sulla piattaforma dal 13 ottobre.

In un futuro lontano, l'umanità è costretta a lasciare la Terra e migrare verso un'altra galassia. Un team esplorativo parte alla ricerca di un pianeta per terraformarlo e i membri dell'equipaggio sono creati con una stampante biologica 3D, ma si verifica un errore di sistema e uno di loro, Lewis, ne emerge deformato. Quando Lewis attacca i suoi compagni Nina, Mack, Patty e Oscar, inizia un conto alla rovescia verso la fine della missione nella terrificante oscurità della navicella.

Il design dei personaggi è stato concepito nientemeno che da Yoshitaka Amano (Vampire Hunter D, Gibiate), lo storico illustratore legato al celebre franchise di Final Fantasy. Per quanto riguarda le musiche, invece, la colonna sonora è firmata da Ryuichi Sakamoto (Arrivederci Tyrano, Appleseed).
