pledging for GYWO 2024 is open! I’ve pledged again - I’ve done GYWO since 2012 and this year is the second year I’ve completed a pledge (first time was in 2018) though I’ve come close a few times and also some years fallen very short of the mark.
There are several pledge types and throughout the year (and the month) there are various voluntary activities one can participate in to stay motivated. Only mandatory thing is the formal check-in every month.
I’ve seen whispers on here wrt people wanting to check out or go back to dreamwidth; if you are writing minded then this community could be a great way to use dreamwidth more actively and connect with people.

GetYourWordsOut: Year Sixteen!
Pledges & Requirements | getyourwordsout.net
Happy New Year, friends!
This post is just to share the love--I've participated in Get Your Words Out for the past few years, and it's really good for motivation and celebrating any words written, not just the ones on the big projects. There are wordcount goals, as well as habit goals, and it's a nice, low-pressure way to see what you've done, writing-wise, throughout the year.

If anyone is looking for year-round writing accountability, you might check out Get Your Words Out (GYWO).
They have several levels of annual Word Count pledges, from 75K (about 200 words a day) on up, or you could choose a Habit pledge instead that tracks the number of days you do writing activities.
They have monthly check-ins to help you keep on track, and a supportive community on Dreamwidth.
I believe the deadline is January 15th to join!

Sign-ups for Get Your Words Out 2023 are now open!
I had so much fun participating this year, and it's so motivating. The tools and resources this writing group offers are super helpful, too, and let's not forget the sprints on Discord! So many of my fics this year wouldn't have been possible without them. 😀
I won't meet my pledged goal this year (I'm pretty much exactly 50k words short because I couldn't participate in NaNoWriMo -- thanks, laptop!), but I will pledge the same wordcount again and hope for a better year 2023!
If you don't want to aim at writing a specific wordcount, but build a habit of writing every day (or every other day, or on the weekends), you can choose a habit pledge instead.
Here's the Dreamwidth post with all the info, if you're interested.
You can only sign up until January 15, so don't wait too long. It's such a great project, I wouldn't want you to miss out!

Well so far for GYWO I'm doing better than last year. This is an 8x increase on last year's total monthly words
Like if I managed to finish NaNo in November, and write just 1k for every other month this year I'd hit my target. And that's kinda mad to think about.

Herding the Words: Looking Back and Planning Ahead
A post of two halves, this is both my review of 2023 and the details I promised about what I’m intending to write and share over the course of 2024.
Looking Back
Well I finished the year having written on 342 days out of a possible 365 and generated 187k words1 in those days. Just over half of those words became 73 separate posts on this blog and 12 newsletters published monthly via…

i have literally never, ever, in my entire life been able to keep a consistent journal (on or offline), so naturally...
i have created a new journal xD
tbf to me, i had to create this to take part in a new year's writing challenge, so hopefully i can make use of it for that purpose even if the daily / weekly journalling thing doesn't pan out. ^-^

Now that the post is over 10k and my notes are straight-up unusable...
One thing I wish I'd spelled out more explicitly in the original post because I see this point getting lost on a lot of rebloggers who don't understand why the healthcare thing was such a big deal is like
The subtext I thought would be understood bc I lived back then but apparently has been lost today is that making sure queer employees and their partners had healthcare in the early 90s meant Disney was paying for a lot of AIDS treatment.
This is one reason fundie Christians were so upset and queer employees were so grateful. It's one reason why it was such a controversial decision. It was a major talking point amongst my family, who believed back then that AIDS was a punishment from God.
(Some still do, I think. We don't talk.)
I keep seeing people saying that Disney only chose that option "because of their bottom line" and it's like??? Were you listening??? Disney has been paying for that decision for literally decades, but they've stood by it.
Like... the 90s weren't like now! It wasn't profitable to cater to the queer population of the country back then. They weren't raking in money with this.
It's in no way a perfect company but I fully believe in criticizing people for the specific things they do wrong and praising them for the specific things they do right. Disney has fucked copyright, monopoly, and labor laws and I'm not about to defend that. But they are well known in FL for being friendly to both queer people and disabled people, and that is unambiguously a good thing.
(Like side note, I could talk about Disney and accessibility for days. I have traveled extensively while disabled and no one does it like Disney.)
I've had people reblogging the post like "I straight-up don't believe Disney is an industry leader in equal protections for queer employees" and it's like ??? do you think I just pulled this out of my ass? If you want more information, go look it up! You'll see that this is well-established history. It's not my fault y'all don't read! :|

im being so fucking for real and i need you guys to boost and reblog this
you nonblack selfshippers have got to stop using "simp." you have to. its african american vernacular english (aave) which in colloquial terms means its not for you to use. in a space already hostile towards shippers of color, youre just making it more inhospitable to black selfshippers by appropriating our language.
say youre crushing. say youre obsessed. say youre head over heels, say youre a sucker, say youre infatuated, just stop saying simp. for the love of god
{nonblack shippers [even other shippers of color] i do NOT want to hear your opinion on this post or hear about how you "didnt know" or are "changing it right now." just be an ally and LISTEN instead of needing to add your piece.}
