Third period
Pens Vs Devils
My moms word of the period is hell yeah
Drew O'Connor off for a trip.
#NJDevils  power play on deck.
Hatakka draws a tripping penalty on Drew O'Connor, #NJDevils  get their second PP and start with the second unit
Holtz.
3-1 #NJDevils
Great positioning by Holtz net front and he cashes in his 15th goal of the year with a flip over Jarry's pad 3-1
Mercer x2.
4-1 #NJDevils
Mercer wins the race to the puck below the goal line, swings it to Palat who one touches to Nosek back to Mercer who slams home his 19th of the season, giving the #NJDevils  a three goal lead with just over 10 min left
Maybe the #NJDevils  need to keep wearing the Stadium Series jerseys
#NJDevils  to the PK.
Luke to the box for interference.
It was 16 seconds in-between the Holtz and Mercer goal.
That's the fastest two goals scored for #NJDevils  this season.
Luke Hughes exits the box and draws a penalty.
#NJDevils  to the PP.
Meier, again.
5-1 #NJDevils
TImo with his 2nd PPG and 21st goal of the season, one away from the team lead. #NJDevils  5-1
Rust scores.
5-2 #NJDevils
We could possible get a Mercer or a Meier hatty tonight
THE DEVILS WIN!!!!!!! 5-2!!!!!!!

hellooo and welcome to Hockey Is A Confusing Sport where I try to explain the rules that confused tf out of me for months. This post is going to be focusing primarily on power plays, since they’re fun!!!
-There are four types of power plays that can occur: 5v4, 5v3, 4v3, and 6v4. Not all penalties lead to power play opportunities!
-in 3v3 overtime, a power play means an extra skater is added, so no 3v2 power plays (which is cowardly!!) After the power play ends, the team that was down a man can send out another player (making the game 4v4) until the whistle blows, which then resets the game to 3v3.
-let’s say a team is on the power play and one of their guys takes a penalty during it. It goes to 4v4 for whatever amount of time overlaps, with the other team getting a power play right after. Unfortunately for the other team, if they don’t score in that small amount of time left over, it still counts as 0/1 on their power play on the stats sheet.
-You can also have differing lengths of power plays: 2 min minor, 4 min double minor, or a 5 min major. The power play ends if the team scores on it and you get a nice shot of the player who took the penalty looking annoyed leaving the box. It does Not end if the opposing team scores a shorthanded goal, so it’s possible you could have a shorty and a pp goal on the same penalty. If the team scores within the first 2 min of a double minor, they still get another 2 min power play. For a 5 min major, you can score as much as you want (go watch this. It’ll be the best 5 min of your day).
-you can also score on a delayed penalty with 6 skaters on the ice. As soon as the opposing team touches the puck after a ref decides there’s a penalty on the play, the play is whistled dead. This means that the team that will end up on the power play can play keep away for a bit to try to set up a scoring chance. It also means that the goalie can skate to the bench for an extra attacker with no worries, since the opposing team won’t be able to score on the empty net. Unfortunately, the team who drew the penalty can score on that empty net. Which has happened.
-6v4 power plays happen in a specific situation: the leading team takes a penalty in the last few minutes of the game, so the trailing team pulls the goalie for an extra skater. Anyone can score on an empty net here.
-power play units are usually 1D and 4F set up in this 1-3-1 formation:
Tumblr media
-you’ll hear the term “quarterback” a ton for the dman who sits on the point. They’ll (theoretically) be the ones calling the shots, waiting for teammates to get in position for an open shooting lane or a tip.
-the two players on the half wall are going to be guys you want shooting, but can also deliver some nice cross-seam passes (from one side of the rink to the other, thru traffic). Usually you want righties to be in the left circle, and lefties to be in the right circle so their shot is more effective. The circles are good one-timer spots. Here’s an example.
-the bumper position is the player right in the thick of things. Their job is to move the puck but also try to draw defenders to them to open up some of the shooting lanes.
-there’s always going to be a netfront presence as well. Someone needs to take the goalie’s eyes away so they’re unable to track the puck when it’s shot. They also tend to tie up a defenseman right in front of the net and can tip shots from the point.
-the 1-3-1 setup is not always used but I think it’s the most common. Sometimes you’ll see 2D on the unit or the 5F unit if the team has a forward they trust enough at the blueline. Here’s a good article on other setups.
-power plays do not affect a skater’s +/-!!!!!!! It’s so stupid!!!!!!! +/- is the worst stat of all time!!!!!!!!
-icing doesn’t happen on power plays for the team trying to clear the puck. They can shoot it down the ice as much as they want.
-if you want a visualization of where your team’s power play offence comes from, hockeyviz has heat maps from each season.
anyway hope you learned something from this post :) if i missed anything or misspoke please let me know!

what's going on with the blown leads???
canucks hockey 🤷🏻‍♀️ lol i mean genuinely i do not know.
we’ve been drawing a lot more penalties but also been receiving a bunch, which is often a trend early in the season as refs kinda settle back into things. also this past summer there was an update to the rulebook regarding crosschecking, which likely means refs are going to enforce crosschecking penalties more. i point this out bc the canucks’ structure right now, especially under bruce, leaves our special teams at a weakness. our pk more so than our pp tho i believe we’ve already given a few shorthanded chances. and the trend in hockey is that close games will devolve into more penalties as it gets further in the game. so basically, canucks aren’t great on pk, play more undisciplined as the game goes on, can’t hold onto a lead when they keep disadvantaging themselves.
that said, it’s also 2 games into the season, so who knows? on 5-on-5 the canucks have looked great. by stats, on 5-on-5, the canucks have had the edge over both the oilers & the flyers. the canucks also are technically a team that is built to win via outscoring. the 3 goals in edmonton were a good start but there Should have been more and if we’d kept the scoring momentum, we could’ve closed that out (but like that’s literally how sports works, so it feels silly to say it especially against the oilers who are unforch a more effective scoring team 🤢 ew complimenting not my meowmeows). the 2 goals in philly simply were not enough. the standard logic for a scoring-focused team is that you need At Least 3 goals to win a game. but i didn’t watch any of the flyers game and only skimmed some tweets & a write-up (plus some messages from friends about the game), so i can’t point out Exactly what stopped the canucks today.
for right now, i’m gonna lean into: don’t panic, it’s 2 games in an 82 game season. if you need to blow some steam, make some ‘we’re doomed’ jokes but don’t actually let yourself believe it (lord knows i’m joking at all my friends that the canucks are secretly tanking for bedard). it’ll be ok, or at least it’ll prolly be fun bc being a canucks fan is chaotically entertaining if nothing else 🤭😂
thanks for asking! hope you’re well 💖

The fiery lion
The rain almost made it sick and had to move the kick-off time for almost an hour and a half before "Sing Chao Tha" wade through the water, chasing "Chong Ang Pow" 4-1 from Hamilton, followed Pretty Gaming by Pakorn Maosing and Teerasak, another tung.

"Sing Chao Tha" has just played 2 matches, winning 1, drawing 1, has not lost anyone. As for the latest game, visiting Police Tero, the match did not end due to heavy rain. making the field conditions unable to continue must postpone the competition
This game "Sing Chao Tha" is back to play in the house. encountered rain as well causing the need to move the kick-off time from 19.00 to 8:20
The first half played only 9 minutes, the home supporters were happy from the moment that Teerasak Phaiphimai paid to Hamilton Soares, a good striker who was released from a flat penalty to score a goal, giving the Port Authority a 1-0 lead.

war widow anon here. big win against the jets with the 7-3 score and them forever being the team that auston matthews scored his 50th goal of the season. also will ny with 2 sexy pp goals. aside from leading in pp, we also lead in SHG! love the kally and auston moment at the end when kally smiles at auston. is there anything better than beating boston IN boston? beating the winnipeg jets after beating boston. idk if heinola will get a suspension or a fine for that crosscheck but looking at dops and leafs history, probably nothing. *cue mitch and mo playing the sad violin music for the jets*
what a fucking gaaame. was very nervous in the first period when they forgot how to hockey but that's in the past hdkdjsks
revenge truly is a dish best served cold. fuuuck the jetsss :) was kinda hoping for the 50th and a willy hatty but that seems to have been greedy of me lol 😔 will and john been teasing us,, 🕯🕯manifesting hattys for each of them very soon🕯🕯
mitchy's 50th assist happened that game as well! our boys are killing ittt! such an exciting night for matts, i'm still an emotional wreck over it lol.
look at them leading in something other than too many men penalties 🥺
the look from källy followed by a mitchy hug jdkdjsj i will never forget it. those boys look up to him so much. makes me so emo.
beating boston in boston followed by beating winnipeg in toronto. king shit right there.
he almost definitely won't be getting a suspension. do you know how many dirty hits there were against the leafs last night?? like, a lot. i forgot to count but steve dangle points them all out and says all of the right things about it in the lfr from last night. highly recommend watching for some coherency bc i just have blind rage about it lol :))
the fucking violins sent meeee that shit is so funny 😭😭 icons
bro this one was soooo long i'm so sorry lol i appreciate you very much for sending me these asks all the time hsksjsks

Olympic WoHo Newsletter 2/4
Tumblr media
While preliminary games have been happening for a few days now, the opening ceremony this morning marked the official start to the Olympic Games. Even before that, things have been exciting in women’s hockey, so into those games after a news update!
NEWS
Finnish head coach Pasi Mustonen will be returning home due to a family emergency and will be replaced by assistant coach Juuso Toivola, anticipated to take over behind team Finland’s bench after this season.
Silke Glud of Denmark injured against China, no update on status but leaves Denmark without the top scorer in Denmark’s women’s league.
After Brianna Decker was forced to leave the tournament after an injury, coach Joel Johnson said the US will consider their options after choosing not to take taxi squad players.
Game recaps for Denmark vs China and Russia vs Switzerland are below the cut, as well as previews of the upcoming four games by @sonnymilano.
GAME RECAPS
DEN [1], CHN [3]: Marlene Frandsen scored the first Olympic goal in Denmark’s history, holding a 1-0 lead until late in the 2nd, when Lin Qiqi (Leah Lum) tied it for China. Danish netminder Cassandra Repstock-Romme was impressive as anticipated, but China dominated possession throughout. Lin Ni (Rachel Llanes) scored with 50.9 left in regulation, and Denmark pulled Repstock-Romme soon after, with Lin Qiqi sealing the deal on the empty net. Full game details via the IIHF here.
ROC [5], SUI [2]: Switzerland didn’t get the rebound they wanted after losing 12-1 to Canada, with Russia beating them in their 1st game of the tournament. 22 year old Polina Bolgareva led an understaffed Russian team with a hat trick. Lara Stalder recorded another goal for the Swiss with a second coming from star Alina Müller, but a game plagued with mistakes wasn’t enough to push them past the Russian team. Full game details via the IIHF here.
UPCOMING GAMES
CAN vs FIN: during their meeting at worlds, Finland go off to a 2-0 lead before losing 5-1. After Canada took 14 PIM against Switzerland, special teams will be even more key for Finland, after they scored twice on the PP against the USA. With Daoust out, Canada needs to keep trusting their young players, including skilled puck moving defender Claire Thompson (1-4-5 against Switzerland). Elis Holopainen could provide depth offense for Finland, with 2 shots of 15 in 16min playing time. Goaltender matchup is expected to be Desbiens for Canada and Keisala for Finland.
CZE vs SWE: Sweden wasn’t able to recover from their slow start against Japan, but will be looking to carry the momentum they gained later into this game from the start. Maja Nylen-Persson stood out last game on defense with a goal, 3 shots, and a team high 22 min of ice time. Czechia’s offensive depth has proven a threat, though, something missing for a lot of Group B teams. Denisa Krizova scored, recorded 3 shots, and was on the ice for another in 13 min of ice time. In net, likely Soderberg for Sweden and Peslarova for Czechia.
DEN vs JPN: after a close game at the 2021 worlds that saw Japan win 1-0, this will be the 2nd appearance for both teams. Japan only played 3 lines against Sweden, with defender Aoi Shiga playing over 32 min. Repstock-Romme and Fujimoto are both expected to start again, Repstock-Romme after her 29 save performance against China the day before. Josefine Persson is a player to watch, with 5 of Denmark’s 23 shots on goal and 23 min of ice time.
USA vs ROC: Russia is another team with strong offensive depth, key against Switzerland, with Bolgareva’s hat trick in 13 min of TOI. Their tendency for penalties has hurt them in past tournaments as well as yesterday, which USA should be trying to take advantage of. USA did only score on 1 of 4 powerplays against Finland, giving up two PP goals against, and Russia has proven they can score both shorthanded and on the PP. Abby Roque will likely be stepping up in place of Decker, with a 71% face off % against Finland, making her the player to watch.
-
SCHEDULE: PRELIMINARY ROUND

21-22 Summaries - Oilers @ Blues (5-4)
okay it's been forever since I have done this....let's have a good one boys. also i really hope torey and brayden are back soon
overall a really great game from the boys. Lots of stuff clicking but we really need to get torey and mikkola back. Calle and Bortz are useful for one or two games at a time but can't be mainstays on the blueline. incredible game from Robby and Vladi
First Period:
okay going to be making dinner during the first so might miss some stuff
Chief trusting Robby to match up against McDavid
makes me so happy. he is having a great year and deserves it
okay let's not get ourselves into a penalty fest here boys
BARBIE
also love how agressive Colton was on the PP. really jumping up in the play
ugh not that agressive colton to put yourself offside. keep that mindset though bud. good ideas
i like the Oiler's goalie's mask
panger don't talk about Steener right now, i miss him
oh that was pretty. very pretty sequence on that PP. shoutout to Buch with the backhand pass
oh so close Dak
hey hey a Colton slap shot. keep taking those babe and they will go in eventually
THERE WAS 5 SECONDS LEFT YOU GUYS
ugh that is unacceptable and really pisses me off
but we had a fantastic period so if we can just keep going we will be good to go
Second Period
oh marco got away with a trip there i think
oof another hooking call on Robby
that was a really pretty pass from Connor to Leon on that goal
we need to start getting some pressure and pucks on net here boys
we look a little more tired this period
look at colton go. just getting up the middle of the ice with spped and drving the net. also great pass from Robby
it has been a while since I have really been able to watch a game like this and i can really tell the difference in Robby's game. he is moving his feet, making great passes, and being more agressive on the attack. i love it. this is what we need from him
also I love Bortz and he isn't awful but i really can;t wait until Torey and Mikkola are back. I think Bortz has entered end of career Gunny teritory in terms of speed and skill but now we don't have Petro to make up for it
BORTZ!!! he heard me taling shit lol I'll keep doing it if it means he keeps scoring
oh so close O'Ry
another powerplay??? Rouzy looked very confused while Connor was pushing him to the ice lol
the way i screamed when Binner gave that puck away
once again i am in awe of how sexy David Perron's hockey is
holy shit some very sexy hockey from Robby and Rouzy that lead to a grade A scoring chance for Buch
I turn my back for like a minute and they score twice....come on boys. it sounded like some sloppy zone clears and turnovers which isn't great but haven't been a pattern this year so not too worried yet. the oilers are very good and this game is going better than i though considering the guys we have out
not a horrible PP to end the period but just a little too much passing. we have to start getting pucks to the net
although i can see why they may be hesitant condisering the spped Edmonton has. one mishandled rebound and they are off the races into our own end. so i kinda get it
i am expecting a huge effort from Binner in the third even though none of these goals have been really obviously his fault
Third Period
okay great start to the period for Binner
also getting some good shots on but they are really clean so they have been easy saves
I adore DP but something is off right now. his hands and puck control look great but he just isn't moving his feet very much
god Buch is having some bad luck tonight. missed a couple really great chances
good god barbie that was a great pass from robby and you had like half the net
Oh wait fuck he did score. it was in and out of the net so fast it looked like it went off the crossbar. good shit
also assist for Robby and he has a multi point game streak going
okay kids we gotta be more disciplined in front of our net. we can;t be taking penalties right now
fuck yeah boys. way to keep your feet moving and tie it up. bery sexy. Vladi and Bortz were putting in some seriouis work and got rewarded
robby with the assist. that is 3 tonight. that's my guy
oh man there is so much time left in this game
DP back at it with the sexy puck protection
ugh i really wanted that point.....Calle was a bit over mached on the boards there i think

2ND PERIOD
I just realized Karri Rämö is wearing a Calgary Flames helmet that’s just in black and white 😂
Also weird af because arena announcer just yelled START CLAPPING but uh... the arena is empty? Or well they have arena restaurant and the boxes open but it’s not that many people
Lukko hoped they could have opened the arena for 600 people which is 13% of the capacity but local government kept the maximum at 20 which is funny because you can go to a sold out bar to watch the game but watching the game in the arena with masks on is prohibited
A SCUFFLE
Which means penalties for Lukko’s Saarijärvi and TPS’s Haapanen
TPS takes two shots during the 4 on 4 and they both hit the post
But straight upon arriving from the box Haapanen scores
TPS LEADS 2-0
Assuming Pekka Virta going to hop down the stairs right about now
It’s not that Lukko is playing bad but merely that TPS is using their chances
I WAS RIGHT, VIRTA SIGHTING ON THE BENCH
Holy shit what a shot by Lukko’s Mattila but Rämö blocks it with his head
Kareyev missed the entire semifinals round but is back on the bench today but TPS decided to use Rämö because he was the main reason they made it to the finals
YIKES. TPS’s Viro full on kneed Pospisil
The refs go check the call on the video because there is an additional ruling for playoffs that any penalties that are 5+ minutes can be reviewed in order to prevent mistakes that can turn the entire game
What the refs can do is either cancel the call they made on ice, switch it to 2 minutes, keep it at 5 minutes or give a game misconduct to the player
And Viro gets a misconduct meaning baiiiiiiiiiii boiiiiiiiii and will most likely face a temporary suspension for tomorrow whilst player safety reviews the case, don’t mark my words
AZSDFRGTYHUJIK LUKKO’S DJ IS PLAYING THIS FINNISH SONG THAT HAS THE LYRICS “WHAT’S THE ISSUE WHEN YOU DON’T HAVE ENOUGH SKILLS” AS VIRO LEAVES THE ICE
Lukko with 5 minute power play, let’s see what happen
Sigh, Lukko have taken most of the 5 mins in the offensive zone but not managed to score
FINALLY ROBIN PRESS MY BEARDED SWEDISH LOVER SCORES
Yeah my bias just came out but I’m a Laplander and Lukko have a Laplander in their midst so we kind of support our own because we literally don’t have that many pro players
(If you’re wondering who are the most notable Lapland players: Jesse Puljujärvi, Ville Pokka, Saku Mäenalanen, Vili Saarijärvi and Antti Erkinjuntti)
This didn’t go like HIFK’s 5 minute power play in the bronze game where they scored two in the last minute
TPS’s Pajuniemi off to the box just a minute prior end of period as he cross-checked Lukko player
But no goals and the PP continues in third period
GAME 2-1 FOR TPS

Yeah he's funny but he also needs to be good
I’m not gonna write an essay on the Yandle v Cats front office issue but a lot of people (non-Cats fans on Twitter especially) are getting indignant on his behalf and it’s a bit frustrating from the perspective of a fan who’s been watching him play since he got to the team.
Tumblr media
Like read this tweet, I’ll get back to it (shout out to my discord group for pointing it out since I don’t listen to Elliotte Friedman’s podcast)
Keith Yandle is (like many athletes) good at what he does but a truer statement would be - Keith Yandle is as good as the teammates he’s surrounded by, the plays that compliment his strengths, and the effort he puts in.
I’m not going into the changes in front office/coaches but in re: Yands, the acquisition of Bob and the departure of Daddy and Hoffman really exposed his weakness.
As the PP QB, Yandle is money for a goal. But when it comes to five on five and defending his own end (because you know, he’s a defenseman) he is inconsistent bordering on irresponsible.
So if you had been going to Cats home games from 2014-15 onward, you probably would see me in the 300s, and ever since we got Yands (16-17) you’d hear a faint “fucking Yandle” every time he’d miss a pass, turn over the puck, fail to finish (or even start) a check, or skate lackadaisically. And let’s be frank, unless you’re there watching it, following his movements specifically, a lot of this does not make it on stat sheets. (Clarification: watching the games on tv you also miss some of this because the camera follows the puck and the announcers are cowards who don’t critique the players)
So circle back to the tweet. If I can see it as a fan, bet money his teammates can see it too and it must be frustrating. Especially on the Cats, considering the core (R.I.P. Troch, enjoy the Canes) has been at this for a while and in spite of the changes around them, they always prided themselves in their effort. They weren’t always good but they tried their best. Barky is a beast and Huby/Troch/Ekblad followed where he led. And for a time Yands did too. He became so integral that the A’s expanded from 2 to 4. Huby, Troch, Ekky, and Yands split it, two A’s at home, two A’s on the road.
But the 19-20 season, Qs changes, and Bobs playing style really laid bare the incompatibilities.
Qs high expectations of his D corp didn’t help. Yand's lackluster performance in the bubble didn’t help. The new GM who knew what kind of D Bob needs to succeed didn’t help.
But in spite of this, they went to bat for him to get him in the game. Why? Because they're loyal and know what he's capable of, because he’s core, and a leader, and you (aka Barky) don't give up on that. Yands always has been a leader (legit think he would’ve been captain had he stayed in Arizona and if OEL wasn’t so good) and I think that’s why he was hurt when he was called out.
But I watched him play on Sunday (of course the tv didn’t stay on him enough to see the full picture) and while he made some mistakes (turnovers and a penalty that lead to a goal), this is the hardest I’ve seen him skate in a while (and I’ve been watching since 2016).
Really hope he keeps it up, I wanna keep yelling “Fucking Yandle”, it’s really cathartic.

Jake Allen leads the #NJDevils onto the ice in Toronto. He starts against the Leafs.
Kahkonen backs up.
First period
#NJDevils starters versus Leafs:
⇥ Meier-Hischier-Bratt
⇥ Bahl-Marino
⇥ Allen
Stretch pass through the neutral zone hits Bertuzzi and he skates right up through the middle of the ice.
1-0 Leafs. Bertuzzi.
Tomas Nosek with a huge shot block on a Nylander shot. He plays out his shift but is struggling to get to the bench. He's staying on the bench but he's certainly wincing in pain.
LUKE! Tie game!
Hell of a shot!
I don't think Joseph Woll was expecting Luke Hughes to shoot from there, but he did and it was the #NJDevils first shot of the game.
It went in. It's tie game.
Jesper Bratt has reached 70 points this season, assisting on Luke Hughes' opening goal tonight in Toronto.
Nico Hischier gets the secondary assist.
Bahl-Nemec
Smith-Marino
Adding to this: the assist was Bratt's 47th of the season, which ties his career-high from the 2021-22 #NJDevils season.
L. Hughes earned his 40th PTS (9g-31a) for the 2023-24 campaign, which tied S. Niedermayer for the 3rd most PTS that a rookie blueliner earned in a single season for team history.
1.) W. Butcher: 44 PTS | 2017-18
2.) V. Fetisov: 42 PTS | 1989-90
Jake Allen putting in the acrobatic work.
Toronto has 17 shots with 6 minutes to play in the first period.
Jake Allen has turned away 16 of them.
This first period has been quite a ride in the #NJDevils defensive zone. Let me tell you.
Leafs up to 20 shots (coming from just about everywhere on the ice) but Jake Allen has been thwarting them away any which way he can.
2-1 #NJDevils !! Nico!!!
Leafs may have the 22-8 shot advantage but the #NJDevils have the 2-1 lead.
Nico Hischier ties Jack Hughes for the lead in goals for #NJDevils with his 24th of the season.
Goal is assisted by Jesper Bratt (his 71st point) and Timo Meier.
38 seconds left in the first and #NJDevils will go to the PK. It's Kevin Bahl to the box for roughing.
Taking the 2-1 lead into the second is huge for #NJDevils after giving up 26 shots to the Leafs.
But they'll have to really buckle down defensively in this second. You're lucky to have a 2-1 lead when you're outshot 26-8.
That's not sustainable.
End of one.
#NJDevils
🚨 L. Hughes (Bratt, Hischier)
🚨 Hischier (Bratt, Meier)
Shots 25-8
Second period
#NJDevils start the period with a big penalty kill.
Kevin Bahl is out of the box and we're back to even strength.
Nylander.
Tie game.
2-2.
3-2 Leafs. Matthews
59 goals for Auston Matthews
TIMO!
#NJDevils tie it right up at 3!
Timo Meier's 24th of the season ties the game at three and puts him in a three-way tie with Jack and Nico for team lead in goals.

New Look Sabres: GM 7 - ANA - Pandemonium at the Pond
Tumblr media
The Anaheim Ducks have actually had a pretty good start after being ass bad most of last year like the Sabres. Counterpoint: Fuck the Ducks! Like most Western Conference teams who really has strong feelings about Anaheim? Unless you have some personal vendetta or a weird anger for the Stanley Cup Final that never happened in 2007 you probably don’t feel anything strongly about this tacky California Club. Last night we were all given a reason to hate these mother fuckers! We’re all just happy to get some weird kinky tweets out of our draft bin for #SabresAfterDark and y’all dirty old shits decide to brain dudes on the boards! What the fuck!? Are we having some kind of whose-actually-for-real pissing match here? You guys decided to jump right into my Top Ten shit list with this second period. I had to work at 8am this morning! Do you think I’m staying up for the third period anyway? Of course not! But with the hate flowing threw my veins like a blue and gold hulk I actually wanted to! With how this game went I looked up the other game against the Ducks later this season: it’s the Sunday afternoon of February 9th. Even if this team is circling the drain per usual by that point I want a fucking revenge game akin to the Andrew Peters versus the Ottawa Senators! I hope we send them home with their little stubby Duck tails between their legs! You SoCal goons sell your shit real good: you watch a game like that and the stupid, monkey part of the brain tells you to goon up as an organization. That Old Time Hockey don’t work no more and Teemu Selanne is the only reason you won a Cup! Eat shit! Luckily Linus Ullmark putting a couple haymakers on Nick Richie’s smarmy face allowed me to turn this one off and go to sleep at a near-decent time. *deep breaths* Okay, you’re probably reading this sober during daylight hours so how about we talk about this game: Pandemonium at the Pond Part One.
I don’t know where to begin with this game. Buffalo had a great first period almost to the very end. Jack Eichel opened the scoring with an absolute magic touch. Our hunky Captain (#SabresAfterDark) got the puck in the neutral zone and went in unassisted. He took three, maybe four strides in a hook route right up and around John Gibson. He tapped it in around Gibson after he split and fell on his face. 1-0 Sabres and let me be very clear, the Ducks had no response for the majority of the first period. Buffalo could have scored two or three more goals than they did before Anaheim even got a shot off in either of the powerplay opportunities this period. We dominated every statistical category for fifteen to eighteen minutes. This team I hardly recognize called the Buffalo Sabres was knocking forwards off their lines on penalty kills. John Vogl said he didn’t know if he saw that kind of drive all last season! This team is now able to pass the puck. I believe the term I’m trying to get at here is puck support. This team can now get possession, transfer that possession between zones and through several passes, and then setup a firing squad in the offensive zone. This first period was a textbook example of this and it’s paying dividends. This new puck support offense is then near fatal on the powerplay. The powerplay was running at 42% going into this game. That’s record levels for the league, and it is bound to regress, but I don’t see why the Sabres can’t stay a top five PP with the units they have running it and our very own Mr. Powerplay Victor Olofsson! Olofsson continued to extend his lead on the record for first goals of one’s career scored on the powerplay with eight after Adam Henrique went to the box for holding Jack Eichel. The mess in front of the Anaheim net went on for what felt like a little while before the puck squirt out (#SabresAfterDark) and Olofsson one timed it to put his team up 2-0. The Randy Carlyle Era is over in Anaheim and though John Gibson will still be left out to dry many games by his defense, Dallas Eakins is not a Coach to let his team lay down and die. Adam Henrique redirects a shot that originated with Josh Manson and Linus Ullmark had no chance of stopping it. 2-1 at the first intermission.
Anaheim’s first goal was a redirect so there’s only so much you can do. Rasmus Dahlin was the defender on Henrique and he didn’t do all he could to force him out. This was one of Dahlin’s worst games as a Sabre. There were several instances this game him and a couple other D-men looked static. Sidebar: Dahlin can screw up all he wants, and you don’t bench him. Did you read that clearly Ralph? I love what you’re doing so far but you can’t bench number 26. That is not an acceptable decision. Good talk. Krueger was open in postgame about where this game really took a turn. Rickard Rakell fired home an equalizer and for the first time this season the Sabres challenged the goal for offsides. It was clearly offsides, pretty obviously even without the replay.  Another sidebar: even when we win it, I could do without offsides challenges stalling out games. Krueger said it: that review broke the momentum Buffalo had even after conceding that first Ducks goal. Hopefully as this club grows it can move beyond relying on momentum to making their own luck but hey, let’s savor what we got going here while we still got it. Moments, and I mean MOMENTS after his goal was called back Rakell, he did a Jack Eichel impression and out maneuvered Ullmark to actually equalize it this time. From here on out the game turned into a real 1970s-style shit show (#SabresAfterDark). It’s time to punch faces, boys and girls! This must be what I hear about when people say the Ducks are hard to play against. It’s not 2007 anymore so it’s not because they’re good at ice hockey! Evidently they’re good at bareknuckle boxing!
I counted at least three fights involving more than two combatants. I damn near threw something at my TV when Carter Rowney came in on Victor Olofsson corralling a puck in the corner and absolutely brained him into the boards. That caused an immediate response from Sam Reinhart and the Sabres; the kind of response a shit team like the Ducks baits you into. A response that is disappearing from the game and should be outright banned. At least two pairs of gloves hit the ice and prairie-ass white dudes galore went at it for the Canadian Dream: stopping being polite for a minute to get into a physical altercation. After that fight there were four major penalties passed out and the two clubs played 4-on-4 for a bit before Rakell shows up again to brain Rasmus Dahlin into the boards at center ice. Dirty as fuck (#SabresAfterDark). Guess who got called for a penalty: Dahlin for putting his HAND ON THE PUCK! Whether or not he did that is beside the point: he’s laying on the ice squirming around because he just got BOARDED! What in the name of Hockey Butts is that!? I am only going to say this once because complaining about the zebras is super-played out and it makes you sound like a sore loser: the refereeing is bad in this league, really bad. Swallow that whistle or blow it (#SabresAfterDark). You know it’s #SabresAfterDark because I felt like I was getting personally fucked by these refs like they had to preserve the Ducks brand or something. Piss off! Ryan Getzlaf capitalized on the Ducks’ stupid powerplay because of course he did, but before they even went up 3-2 Marcus Johansson got hauled down in the defensive zone. No call. At one point the MSG broadcast is about to go commercial, like the outro is rolling and the camera catches Vladimir Sobotka bleeding and Marco Scandella getting hauled off of resident Ducks douche bag Nick Richie only to see Linus Ullmark come out of the net and start pounding him. They came back from commercial and everyone is standing around as penalties assessed. Universal good guy and all-around awesome, gentle daddy Linus Ullmark is fighting!? The Sabres had a brief powerplay though Jimmy Vesey served a penalty to Ullmark and the whole affair was glazed over by officiating. Why did Vladdy bleed? I don’t know and frankly I was so pissed by this point in the second period that when Adam Henrique scored again in the dying seconds of the middle frame to put the home team up 4-2 I just threw my hands up and said bedtime.
Evidently that was a good choice; not just for the sake of my shift this morning but for the sake of resetting on this Sabres team. There was an empty net goal and Anaheim won this one 5-2. The Sabres were going to get that regulation loss sooner or later and apart from being absolutely jobbed by the refs and a Ducks team leaning on MMA when the going gets tough, they looked strong in this game. All told they outshot Anaheim and broke down only after being forced to breakdown. They’ll be okay. My next benchmark for this team is not only can they maintain motivated, puck supporting, “together” hockey, but can they bounce back? Not just tonight up the road against the Kings, can they bounce back within games like they did against Montreal and Florida with some consistency? That’s part of what makes good teams good teams. Are they good now? I think its still too early to tell because consist compete is what makes you good and that’s still spotty. Fuck the Ducks. Casey Mittelstadt had a good game and nobody will remember it because of Ryan Getzlaf. Evan Rodrigues on the other hand has been rough in his return for the injured Conor Sheary. Unfortunately he may have blown his chance. Curtis Lazar got called up and don’t be surprise if and when the Hamburgler’s Knight gets the start over ERod. Since I’m writing this postgame the next day that earns you New Look Sabres reply guy tweet of the game. I made a #SabresAfterDark joke involving Jack Eichel’s domination and @theboonarmies (B Chalk-outline) replied with “Eichel brought his Dom boots to Anaheim.” I know that’s not really analysis, but I thought why not stick with the theme after this Pandemonium at the Pond?
Like this blog, share it with a friend and comment because even though I’ll certainly be writing another day-after postgame after tonight’s LA game your reply could be the next New Look Sabres reply guy tweet of the game. I’m reasonably confident the Sabres can powerbomb the Kings from lower earth orbit tonight like a crappy COD Black Ops sequel. I know that sounds like vain pride given this team’s history but if Vancouver can hang 8-2 on this shell of a franchise then why can’t the other 1970 expansion team? Their celebrating the 20th anniversary of Staples Center tonight. If they’re going to parade around their banners from a half decade ago I’d love to crash that party. I really do want to see a Home opener style rout and I don’t see why not. In spite of how it ended with Anaheim you got to believe they have it in them to beat this Kings team. Until tonight for another #SabresAfterDark, Let’s Go Buffalo!
Thanks for Reading.
P.S. Taylor Hall is never going to be a Sabre but just the fact that in a Post-Skinner world Sabres fans can realistically dream that dream is pretty amazing.

Covenant Faith - Lesson 12, June 12-18
Sabbath Afternoon
Tumblr media
Read for This Week’s Study: Gal. 6:14; Rom. 6:23; I John 5:11, 13; Rom. 4:1-7; Lev. 7:18; Lev. 17:1-4; Rom. 5:1.
Memory Verse: “But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith” (Galatians 3:11).
About seven centuries before Christ, the poet Homer wrote the Odyssey, the story of Odysseus the great warrior who — after sacking the city of Troy in the Trojan war — began a ten-year voyage to try to return to his native Ithaca. The voyage, too, took so long because he faced shipwrecks, mutinies, storms, monsters, and other obstacles that kept him from reaching his goal. Finally, after deciding that Odysseus had suffered enough, the gods agreed to allow the weary warrior to return to his home and family. His trials were, they agreed, enough atonement for his mistakes.
In one sense, we are like Odysseus, on a long journey home. The crucial difference, however, is that, unlike Odysseus, we can never “suffer enough” to earn our way back. The distance between heaven and earth is too great for us to atone for our mistakes. If we get home, it would have to be only by the grace of God.
The Week at a Glance: Why must salvation be a gift? Why could only Someone equal with God ransom our souls? What makes Abraham such a good representative of faith? What does it mean that righteousness is “imputed” or “credited” to us? How can we make the promises and hope found in the Cross our own?
Study this week’s lesson to prepare for Sabbath, June 19.

Reflections of Calvary
The Old Testament way of salvation under the Mosaic covenant is no different from the New Testament way of salvation under the new covenant. Whether in the Old or New Testament, old or new covenant, salvation is by faith alone. If it was by anything else, such as works, salvation would be something that was owed us, something the Creator was obligated to give us. Only those who do not understand the seriousness of sin could believe that God was under some obligation to save us. On the contrary, if anything, there was only one obligation, and that was what we owed to the violated law. We, of course, could not meet that obligation; fortunately, Jesus met it for us.
“When men and women can more fully comprehend the magnitude of the great sacrifice which was made by the Majesty of heaven in dying in man’s stead, then will the plan of salvation be magnified, and reflections of Calvary will awaken tender, sacred, and lively emotions in the Christian’s heart. Praises to God and the Lamb will be in their hearts and upon their lips. Pride and self-esteem cannot flourish in the hearts that keep fresh in memory the scenes of Calvary … All the riches of the world are not of sufficient value to redeem one perishing soul. Who can measure the love Christ felt for a lost world as He hung upon the cross, suffering for the sins of guilty men? This love was immeasurable, infinite.
Christ has shown that His love was stronger than death. He was accomplishing man’s salvation; and although He had the most fearful conflict with the powers of darkness, yet, amid it all, His love grew stronger and stronger. He endured the hiding of His Father’s countenance, until He was led to exclaim in the bitterness of His soul: ‘My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?’ His arm brought salvation. The price was paid to purchase the redemption of man, when, in the last soul struggle, the blessed words were uttered which seemed to resound through creation: ‘It is finished.’
The scenes of Calvary call for the deepest emotion. Upon this subject you will be excusable if you manifest enthusiasm. That Christ, so excellent, so innocent, should suffer such a painful death, bearing the weight of the sins of the world, our thoughts and imaginations can never fully comprehend. The length, the breadth, the height, the depth, of such amazing love we cannot fathom. The contemplation of the matchless depths of a Saviour’s love should fill the mind, touch and melt the soul, refine and elevate the affections, and completely transform the whole character.” — Ellen G. White, Testimonies for the Church, vol. 2, pp. 212, 213.
Pray over what Ellen G. White wrote here. Keeping these lines in mind, read Galatians 6:14 and then ask yourself, in what ways can I glory in the Cross of Christ?

The Covenant and the Sacrifice
“You know that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your fathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot” (1 Pet. 1:18-19, RSV).
What does Peter mean here when he says that we were ransomed?
When Peter speaks about Christ’s atoning death on the cross, the “ransom” or price idea to which he refers brings to mind the ancient practice of a slave being freed from his bondage after a price had been paid (often by a relative). In contrast, Christ ransomed us from the slavery of sin and its final fruit, which is death, but He did it with His “precious blood,” His substitutionary and voluntary death on Calvary. Again, this is the foundation of all the covenants: without it, the covenant becomes null and void, because God could not have justly fulfilled His end of the deal, which is the gift of eternal life bestowed upon all who believe.
Look up the following verses: Rom. 6:23, 1 John 5:11, 13. What message do all of them share in common?
We have this promise of eternal life, because Jesus alone could repair that breach that first caused us to lose that eternal life. How? Because the righteousness and infinite value of the Creator alone could cancel the debt we owed to the broken law — that is how wide the breach caused by sin was. After all, what would it say about the seriousness of God’s eternal moral law if some finite, temporal, and created being could pay the penalty for violating it? Only Someone who is equal to God Himself, in whom life existed unborrowed and underived and eternal, could have paid the ransom required to free us from the debt owed to the law. This is how all the covenant promises are fulfilled; this is how we have the promise of eternal life, even now; this is how we have been ransomed from sin and death.
Imagine that someone’s child, in an art museum, throws a balloon filled with ink on a Rembrandt painting and ruins it completely. The painting is worth millions; the parents, even if they sold everything they owned, could not come close to paying the debt owed. In what sense does this image help us understand just how serious a breach sin has caused, how helpless we are to fix it, and why only the Lord Himself could pay the debt?

The Faith of Abraham: Part 1
“He believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness” (Gen. 15:6).
This verse remains one of the most profound statements in all Scripture. It helps establish the crucial truth of biblical religion, that of justification by faith alone, and it does this long centuries before Paul wrote about it in Romans. All of which helps prove the point that from Eden onward, salvation always came the same way.
The immediate context of the verse helps us understand just how great Abram’s faith was, believing in God’s promise of a son despite all the physical evidence that would seem to make that promise impossible. It is the kind of faith that realizes its own utter helplessness, the kind of faith that demands a complete surrender of self, the kind of faith that requires a total submission to the Lord, the kind of faith that results in obedience. This was the faith of Abram, and it was counted to him “as righteousness.”
Why does the Bible say that it was “counted to” him or “credited to” him as righteousness? Was Abram himself “righteous” in the sense of God’s righteousness? What did he do, not long after God declared him righteous, that helps us understand why this righteousness was credited to him, as opposed to what he himself actually was?
However much Abram’s life was a life of faith and obedience, it was not a life of perfect faith and perfect obedience. At times he displayed weakness in both areas. (Does that sound like anyone you know?) All of which leads to the crucial point, and that is: the righteousness that saves us is a righteousness that is credited to us, a righteousness that is (to use a fancy theological term) imputed to us. This means that we are declared righteous in the sight of God, despite our faults; it means that the God of heaven views us as righteous even if we are not. This is what He did with Abram, and this is what He will do to all who come to Him in “the faith of Abraham” (Rom. 4:16).
Read Romans 4:1-7. Look at the context in which Paul uses Genesis 15:6. Pray over those verses and write out in your own words what you believe they are saying to you.

The Faith of Abraham: Part 2
Looking again at Genesis 15:6, we can see that various translations have rendered the term counted (Hebrew, chashab) or “reckoned” or “credited” (RSV, NIV) or “accounted.” (NKJV)
The same term is employed in other texts in the books of Moses. A person or a thing is “reckoned” or “regarded" as something that person or thing is not. For instance, in Genesis 31:15, Rachel and Leah affirm that their father “reckons” (“regards” or “counts”) them as strangers, although they are his daughters. The tithe of the Levite is “reckoned” (“regarded” or “counted”) as though it were the corn of the threshing floor, although it is obviously not the corn (Num. 18:27, 30, NIV).
How is the idea of reckoning expressed in the context of sacrifices? (Lev. 7:18, Lev. 17:1-4).
The King James Version uses the word imputed to translate chashab. If a particular sacrifice (“peace offering”) is not eaten by the third day, its value is lost, and it shall not be “reckoned” (Lev. 7:18, NASB; Hebrew, chashab) to the benefit of the offerer. Leviticus 7:18 speaks of a situation in which a sacrifice is “reckoned” to the benefit of the sinner (compare Lev. 17:1-4, NASB) who then stands before God in righteousness. God is accounting the sinner as righteous, although the individual is actually unrighteous.
Take some time to dwell on this wonderful truth that we, despite our faults, can be accounted, or credited, as righteous in the sight of God. Write out in your own words your understanding of what this means.
The great truth, that of being declared righteous, not because of any act that we can do but only because of faith in what Christ has done for us, this is the essence of the phrase “righteousness by faith.” Yet, it is not that our faith itself makes us righteous; rather, faith is the vehicle by which we obtain the gift of righteousness. This, in essence, is the beauty, the mystery, and the glory of Christianity. All that we believe as Christians, as followers of Christ, finds an important root in this wonderful concept. Through faith, we are accounted righteous in the sight of God. All else that follows; obedience, sanctification, holiness, character development, love, should stem from this crucial truth.
How do you respond to someone who seeks to be a Christian yet says, “But I don’t feel righteous”?

Resting on the Promises
There is a story told about the famous Cardinal Bellarmine, the great Catholic apologist who all his life fought the message of justification by an imputed righteousness alone. As he lay dying, he was brought the crucifixes and the merits of the saints to help give him assurance before death. But Bellarmine said, “Take it away. I think it’s safer to trust in the merits of Christ.”
For many people as they near the end of their lives, they look back and see how vain, how futile, how useless their deeds and their works are for earning salvation with a holy God, and thus how much they need the righteousness of Christ.
Yet the good news is that we don’t have to wait for the approach of death to have security in the Lord now. The whole covenant is based on the secure promises of God now, promises for us now, promises that can make our life better now.
Look up the following verses and answer the question asked with each one in the context of developing, keeping, and strengthening your covenant relationship with God:
Ps. 34:8 (How can you taste God’s goodness?)
Matt. 11:30 (What is it about what Christ has done for us that makes this yoke easy?)
Rom 5:1 (What does justification have to do with peace?)
Phil. 2:7-8 (What have you gained from Christ’s experience?)
Prayerfully examine your life and ask yourself, what things am I doing that are strengthening my relationship with God, and what things are hurting it? What changes do I need to make?

Further Thought:
“The only way in which he [the sinner] can attain to righteousness is through faith. By faith he can bring to God the merits of Christ, and the Lord places the obedience of His Son to the sinner’s account. Christ’s righteousness is accepted in place of man’s failure, and God receives, pardons, justifies, the repentant, believing soul, treats him as though he were righteous, and loves him as He loves His Son. This is how faith is accounted righteousness.” — Ellen G. White, Selected Messages, book 1, p. 367.
“When through repentance and faith we accept Christ as our Savior, the Lord pardons our sins, and remits the penalty prescribed for the transgression of the law. The sinner then stands before God as a just person; he is taken into favor with Heaven and through the Spirit has fellowship with the Father and the Son.
Then there is yet another work to be accomplished, and this is of a progressive nature. The soul is to be sanctified through the truth. And this also is accomplished through faith. For it is only by the grace of Christ, which we receive through faith, that the character can be transformed.” — Ellen G. White, Selected Messages, book 3, p. 191.
Discussion Questions:
1. What distinction is made between a living and a dead faith? (James 2:17-18). How does Paul describe a living faith? (Rom. 16:26). What is the key word that helps reveal what faith entails?
2. How do you respond to the argument (which comes with a certain logical consistency) that if we are saved only by a credited righteousness, not a righteousness that exists within us, then it does not matter what we do or how we act?
3. “Our acceptance with God is sure only through His beloved Son, and good works are but the result of the working of His sin-pardoning love. They are no credit to us, and we have nothing accorded to us for our good works by which we may claim a part in the salvation of our souls … He [the believer] cannot present his good works as a plea for the salvation of his soul.” — Ellen G. White, Selected Messages, book 3, p. 199. Keeping this statement by Ellen G. White in mind, why, then, are good works such a crucial part of the Christian experience?
Summary: Old Covenant, new covenant: Jesus paid the debt owed by the law, so that we can stand righteous in the sight of God.

Calgary vs Ottawa (2021) flames senators - Bing images
Resilience
Like a bad Vietnam flashback, the Calgary Flames must have been sitting in the dressing room with pools of sweat on floor wondering what just happened after Thursday nights game against the Ottawa Senators. Things couldn’t have gone much worse on a night where optimism was trending up coming into it. After taking 3 of a possible 4 points to the division leading Maple Leafs the previous 2 games in Toronto, the Flames were feeling good about the direction their game was heading. Sure, it wasn’t a perfect couple games by any means but given what transpired Saturday night against the Edmonton Oilers it was a huge improvement. The Oilers took it to the Flames to a tune of 7-1 and handed them, what at the time was thought to be, their worst loss of the season. That loss left everyone frustrated and wondering how to move forward. Well, they answered that by going into Toronto and shutting out the high-powered Leafs 3-0 behind the stellar goaltending of David Rittich. Big Save Dave was pressed into action after starter Jacob Markstrom couldn’t play due to an upper body injury. That remained the case the following game against Toronto, as Rittich and the Flames would try to carry that momentum into it.
Like the previous game, Calgary’s game plan appeared to be focussed on using tight defence to manufacture offence in transition. It was just as successful as they minimized scoring chances even while having to kill too many penalties. A problem they had all season as they have been short handed the 3rd most times in the league. Thanks to a PK that is operating at 80% (13th in the NHL), they were able to kill all 4 Toronto powerplays. That made for 11 straight successful PK’s against them which usually isn’t a good recipe for success especially when facing the 4th best PP. Of course, to have a good PK it usually comes down to the goaltending. Rittich once again closed the door on everything the Leafs threw at him. The Maple Leafs fired 39 shots and he was up to the task on all of them...almost. David was a minute and a half away from his 2nd consecutive shut out versus them when it all fell apart. With a 1-0 lead on a late period Mangiapane goal, Toronto pulled their goalie for an extra attacker. It almost backfired, but half a puck width is what stood between them and a 2-goal victory. The puck hit the post of an empty net and stayed out giving the Leafs hope. That unfortunate event turned into a game tying goal by William Nylander and forced overtime. It was Willy who scored again and won it in the extra frame for Toronto. That was such a disappointing way to end what was a successful 2 games to build off of. Sometimes those losses hurt more than the blowouts because the team was so close to winning. It can truly feel like something was taken from them or they let it slip away. The key is to not dwell on that missed opportunity and instead focus on all the positives that lead to being so close to victory.
Well, maybe the Flames took the sting of that loss with them to Ottawa the following night. In what can only be described as the worst loss of the season, the whole team decided not to show up for the game. At least that’s what it looked like. They seemed to get beat to every loose puck, lose every puck battle, and couldn’t generate any offence whatsoever. Every time they entered the offensive zone they were pressed to boards and unable to get any separation for a meaningful shot. Even David Rittich couldn’t bail them out as he was forced into playing back-to-back games with Markstrom missing another game. On top of that, all the same issues that plagued Calgary before popped up again. They started slow in finding themselves down 2-0 less than 10 minutes into the game as the Sens scored goals in 1:42. The Flames were yet again playing catch up facing a 1st intermission deficit. The shots on goal heavily favoured the Sens too as they held a 13-5 advantage. It was an awful start against what was suppose to be an inferior opponent that struggles to score. Ottawa is 24th in the NHL in goals for per game at 2.59 while they are the worst at giving up goals at 3.86/game. Calgary is actually worse at scoring coming in at 2.44 goals/game. Yet in the views of the hockey world, they are supposed to be the team more poised for success right now. There they were playing comeback hockey though. The Flames came out better to start the 2nd period, with Lucic scoring 1:41 into the period. It was his 1st goal in 9 games as he continues to drag that $5.25 million cap hit around with him. That put them back in the game, but it was short lived. 3 minutes later Lucic got stripped of the puck by Connor Brown to make it a 2-goal hole again. In fact, Lucic was responsible for giving the puck away on all 3 Ottawa goals. That doesn’t take any blame away from the listless effort of the whole team though. At the halfway mark of the game, they had only 6 SOG! It doesn’t matter how many goals the other team scores if you aren’t going to put any pressure on the opposing goalie. Things went from bad to worse from that moment on. The Sens took a 4-1 lead on what appeared to be a shoot in from just over center ice by Erik Brannstrom. At least that’s what Rittich thought. He tried cheating behind the net to intercept it, only to be fooled with a direct shot on net that he was unable to scramble back into position to stop. That was an ugly was the end an ugly night for him. After a coach’s timeout and then a t.v. timeout, Coach Ward mercifully pulled the frustrated tender. After 2 stellar performances Rittich was unable to make up for all the short comings of the team on this night. It was obvious he didn’t take that lightly either, as he could be seen walking down the tunnel towards the dressing room and smashing his stick. That about summed up the mood of the team and any fan watching this debacle. The only positive from this game is back up goalie Artyom Zagidulin got to see his 1st career NHL action. It’s not how he wanted to see it I am sure, but a nice moment for him regardless. He did give up a couple more goals to make it a 6-1 final, but by that point the game was out of hand anyways. Yes, the goaltending was bad giving up 6 goals on 31 shots but there was enough blame to go around. From the goaltending to the D to the forwards, there just wasn’t enough compete all around. There wasn’t any intensity either in what was billed as the meeting of the Tkachuk brothers. The game featured no penalties, which is a rarity in the modern NHL where penalties are assessed for the simple placing of a stick against the arm of the puck carrier. Maybe that’s exactly how Ottawa wanted to play it. Maybe it was the result of the Flames playing their 3rd game in 4 nights. Maybe they took the Senators for granted. Maybe it was just one of those games. Regardless, how they would answer that performance the next game would show what this team really is all about. If they came out flat once again and lost, the vultures would start circling.
It’s odd to say that after 21 games the Flames were at a point where the next game could decide how the next 35 would go, but here they were. Coming off their worst loss of the season, it was about character and resilience. It was about showing the fight the team had left in it. It would be easy to roll over and feel sorry for themselves. It would be easy to look at the standings and see the gap between them and the top as insurmountable. That’s not what a team with the leadership of captain Mark Giordano and Matthew Tkachuk does though. With 3 of the next 4 against the same Sens an opportunity still presented itself to pile up some points and jump back into a playoff spot. The team ahead of them, in the Montreal Canadiens, was having their own set of problems. There was still plenty of time to turn things around and cause havoc in the divisional hierarchy. However, that had to start the next game.
In Ottawa and without top netminder Jacob Markstrom for a 4th straight game, that would be a challenge. They brought him in for situations just like this. To be the guy to stop the bleeding and right a struggling team. With him out, it’s a lot to ask of backup Rittich to be that guy for long stretches. Even though he had shown back in Toronto he could do it, the team needed to come together. As well, Coach Ward decided to shake the lines up to give the players a fresh look and feel. He moved Lindholm from center to the right side of Monahan and Gaudreau. Backlund moved up to the second line between Tkachuk and Mangiapane. And Same Bennett was moved back to his more natural center position with Lucic and Dube. Those moves paid quick dividends as less than 5 mins into the game it was 2-0. They scored those 2 goals in a span of 37 seconds on the backs of goals from Valamaki (1st of the season) and Backlund. That was just the start they needed to gain confidence and quickly put the doubts seeded from last game behind them. They didn’t let up either, extending their lead to 3-1 after 1 period and a 6-2 lead after 2 periods. The newly formed Tkachuk-Backlund-Mangiapane seen this biggest boost in accounting for half of the goals and 7 points between them. With that type of offensive explosion, I expect these lines will carry forward to the next few games at least. The game was never in doubt from the drop of the puck, but even so Rittich was good when he had to be in stopping 31 of 34 shots. There is hope that Markstrom will be back for Mondays rematch the Ottawa, but if not Rittich will certainly be back between the pipes for a fifth straight start.
So, at .500 and 1 point behind the struggling Canadiens, Calgary would love nothing more than to end their 5-game eastern road trip with another win. That would give them a 7 of a possible 10 points on the trip, turning what was a low mark 6-1 loss during it into a success. Such is the highs and lows of an NHL season. The key is not to get too high on the highs and too low on the lows. It is critical for a team to remain even keeled. If they don’t it can unravel pretty quick and a couple losses can turn into a half dozen. Those types of losing streaks must be avoided in a season where the standings can swing dramatically one way or the other. Much like the way the outlook of this Flames team swung from Thursday to Sunday. Where in the former all seemed lost, now in the latter resilience and hope spring forward.
