"OVERSEAS RADIO MAN FACES DEFENCE TRIAL," Toronto Star. October 9, 1942. Page 2. ---- Civilian Operator Denies Guilt at Montreal ---- Montreal. Oct. 8 - (CP) - Brian Percy Pettit, 30, civilian radio operator of the British Overseas Air Corporation, today was committed for trial in November on charges under the Defence of Canada regulations. The British-born operator pleaded not guilty to charges of spreading reports and making statements likely to cause disaffection to the King, and to be detrimental to recruiting and the prosecution of the war. Flight Lieutenant Rowe Spurling, security officer of the R.A.F. Ferry Command, testified he learned from a woman enemy alien that she knew the movement of all overseas aircraft since she had become acquainted with Pettit. At his first hearing, a woman testified that Pettit told her he was a member of the Gestapo.

... ... So anyway, what do you say for "kick the bucket" in your native language?
In German we say "den Löffel abgeben" (= "to turn in/hand over the spoon") or "ins Gras beißen" (= "to bite the grass") among other things.

The little German boy went into the weed cave 😔

STUTTGART NEWS
Little German Boy Fucks Shit Up
This Friday at 2AM, a little German boy in the name of Johann Ludwig entered the premises of a weed cave despite the warnings to not from many others. Once entered, Johann suddenly decided to smoke all 90 kilograms of the weed inside the cave and went in a weed induced murder spree. Over 15 innocent people were killed that night. Witnesses claim that he was "high off his ass", and several of his family members told us how they never coukd have imagined a sweet young upstanding boy like Johann to rip a bong like that.
Professional drug scientists have said that this particular incident may or may not have done permanent damage to the little German boy's brain. They have stated that "he might become like, a totally maniacal hot mercenary DILF in the future, like, he's gonna be fucking crazy dude".
The little boy's intentions from going into that cave are yet to be know, but police investigations are still ongoing and officers are saying that they will soon get answers out of the boy as soon as they find a police officer that isn't scared to death of the boy.
The little boy's family, the Ludwigs, have chose to make no further comment on the boy's unusually violent behavior, finding the topic too upsetting. However, according to the family's neighbour's, the Smidtts, little Johann had a distant Uncle whom he visited often without his family's permission or knowledge. Dr. Hans Ludwig, a dentist with a clinic not far from the boy's home, had several things to say on the subject when our reporters asked him his opinions. "Let the boys have some damn fun. He's not doing any harm!" He had said. "What's wrong with a few casualties in the name of science. Besides, who doesn't smoke weed every once in a while. You people and your silly 'laws' are inhibiting the true potential and creativity of our future children!

#spy x family#sxf#yor forger#thorn princess#tumblr polls#okay in case you didn't know: Yor has references to sleeping beauty#first ref is her code name. Thorn ironically being what put the princess to sleep while it's what Yor uses to put others “to sleep”#Technically her weapons aren't thorns but they could seen as one with her being “the rose” and her stilettos the “thorns” she uses 2defend#herself. Also the rose being her signature flower shown both in her headwear her pin and her assassin clothing#The less obvious fact is her maiden surname#Briar is the name in Little Briar Rose. The ENG title translation in the german version of this tale#Another fun fact considering Ostania is based on Germany so obviously none of these were coincidences#At first I thought the rose could be one of the emblems of the organization as a whole or in general#but after seeing the shopkeeper the only resemblance I could find between his design and Yor's is that both wear those daggers accessories#Yor wearing them in plain sight as earrings while the shopkeeper has them hanging from the ends where he ties his apron behind his neck#so maybe those are the emblems much like that symbol with an eye is to WISE#Of course given how the organisation is called Garden I suppose one of the main themes are plants/flowers/nature#Which has me wondering if other characters may have tale inspo as well or Yor is one the few/only who has references to a tale#it could be something that appears frequently perhaps? Just like many spies have code names related to the different times of day 🤔#anyway this is just a chance to bring the topic and see if others are cooking theories. Feel free to shout your speculations here#sxf manga spoilers#just in case#god now I want to make a sona just to shove on them all my interest about flowers and tales#MY BAD the shopkeeper has the stilettos (?) hanging at the ends of the strings to keep his hat in place ☠️

5. A gift from the past.
Up until the moment the officer gazes at the holo of the infant boy, it’s easy to believe Loi’e may have been mistaken in her identification of the eyepatch-wearing Imperial. But as he removes his cap to show the scars where two horns once protruded from his skull, we know her intuition has served her well. And instead of just another nameless Imperial soldier, a cog in the Empire’s galactic machine, we begin to see him as Loi’e did. A little boy who was stolen, a child who was indoctrinated, and a young man who can still change his mind.

kinda neat how media can be used as a jumping off point to learn about new things. there are the obvious things like documentaries, but then there are all sorts of other things. when 'hamilton' first got big, you ended up with people learning about aaron burr and the new york water system and various trivia from usa history around that era which wasn't even featured in the musical itself.
when 'mr bates vs the post office' came out recently over here (UK), a whole lot of people were able to appreciate the impact the whole horizon/post office affair had on its victims. sure, the story has been in the news for a few years now, but it's the first time it's been a story actively discussed in daily life. and people learning more about it has actively pushed the government to consider speeding up compensation or mass exonerations.
and even aside from these obvious instances, there are a lot that don't tell you up front and you realise as you're watching. when shows and films and books reference real life events through the veneer of fiction. suzume, referencing the tohoku earthquake of 2011 (something I imagine pretty much every japanese citizen is aware of - suzume's own age is very deliberate in how she lost her mother to the quake. she was very young at the time it happened, but it still had a huge impact on her and many others). link click, referencing the 2008 sichuan earthquake (and deliberately having the arc revolve around school-age children in a run-down old building when irl one of the reasons the casualties were so high was because of poor construction of school buildings). various kdramas referencing generational SK disasters: imf financial crisis (explored in 'reborn rich', but I imagine many other shows), sampoong department store collapse (referenced in 'move to heaven', but again, once I knew the history, it made a lot of sense why so many corrupt villains in kdramas were specifically involved in construction).
it's a mix of how, if you know the events being referenced, they'll impact you more. but if you don't know the events, then it gives you a reason to learn. I personally had very very vague memories of the 2008 earthquake, just in terms of some clips on the news at the time. I had no idea about the various factors that made the disaster so much worse until I realised what was being referenced when watching the show and decided to read up on it.
I have somewhat conflicted feelings on how fictional (or dramatised in the case of mr bates) media approaches specifically *disasters*, as opposed to other historical events, but I think the shows I've mentioned here at least take a victim-first approach.

2nd March 1938 saw the arrest by MI5 of Jessie Jordan, the Dundee hairdresser who would later be convicted as a German spy.
Jessie Jordan was part of a ring of Nazi spies and agitators who worked to undermine the Allies before and during World War II.
War widow Jessie Jordan worked as a hairdresser to support her family before remarrying and trying to make it as a singer and actress. But she became infamous for a performance of a different kind.
Jessie, along with Tory toff Archibald Ramsay, was part of a ring of Nazi spies and agitators who worked to undermine the Allies before and during World War  Two.
Jessie Jordan’s double life as a spy was exposed after her landlord found a map of Scotland’s military barracks in her handbag, with the hair stylist in the pay of German intelligence organisation Abwehr arrested on March 2, 1938.
Jordan was sentenced to four years in jail after admitting to sharing secrets of Scotland’s coastal defences with the German intelligence services.
At her trial in New York, the court heard the Fife depot was of first-class national importance to the defence services with the sketch of ‘very great value to the pilot of enemy bombing plane seeking out his objective,’ a report of the court proceedings said.
She met her first husband, Frederick Jordan, from Hamburg, while he worked as a waiter in Dundee. After marrying in 1912, she moved to Germany.
She was hired by Abwehr just before returning to Scotland in 1937. On her appointment, she wrote: “I was now approaching the most dangerous and exciting period of my life. I was about to become a spy in the interests of Germany. I did not take this step because I bore Britain any ill-will or had become pro-German. Nothing could be further from the truth. I only did it to oblige friends in Germany and because I felt it would afford some excitement ...”
Jordan told immigration officials that she returned to Scotland to track down details of her birth father given she needed an Ahnenpass, a certificate based on church records that demonstrated her family line contained no Jewish heritage. It was all lies.
At her trial, the extent of German intelligence gathering in the United States ahead of the outbreak of World War Two emerged. Jordan sold military information to Nazi German for two years and was the central figure in a major espionage ring stretching throughout Europe to New York and Washington.
Letters from operatives were received at the hairdressing salon in Dundee’s Kinloch Street, which she set up after returning to Scotland. Former salon owners Mary and John Curran became suspicious of her activities given Jordan was “unusually keen” to secure the shop, offering double the market value despite its downmarket address.
The Currans surreptitiously searched Jordan’s handbag: inside they found a map of Scotland on which the location of military barracks had been marked in pencil. They showed it to the police before slipping it back in place
At the Dundee salon, letters postmarked New York were discovered, some which contained requests for spy equipment, blank American passports and cash. All were to be routed via the Dundee hairdresser.
After her arrest, she was sent to Saughton Prison but transferred to Aberdeen at the outbreak of World War Two.
She was described as a “model prisoner” who busied herself with needlework. Released in 1941 she was interned again for the rest of the war before being deported. She died in Hamburg in 1954.

Reasons why headcanoning havers as a German spy is bad
-number 1: we have little to no information on him, so whilst sexuality and gender headcanons are fine, it has pretty much no basis apart from “oh he left the captain” which could have been because he was in love with the captain.
-number 2: that implies that he condones the gen0cide of millions of people, a reminder that a german spy is a n@zi. How the actual fuck is headcanoning someone as a literal n@zi not inherently problematic?!
-number 3: the captain would have had to approve havers’ transfer, it’s how the army worked back then and still works now, say we didnt have the knowledge that he never suspected any of his unit, would he let havers go if he was suspicious of him? No, of course not, from the little we know about the captain he wouldn’t risk his country like that.
-number 4: if your reason is for the angsty edits you can make, DO YOU FUCKING KNOW HOW INSENSITIVE THAT IS? People fucking died. Millions of Jews and Romani people were murdered. It was a gen0cide. That reason for the headcanon is called romanticising it. Romanticise school, not gen0cide.
-number 5: even if his last name has german origins, it is also a British last name. Additionally it would make more sense for a potential spy to be a private or other lower rank.
-number 6: the captain is the only gay character that is confirmed. That would be extremely tragic especially since it would likely bring a new wave of fans there for that arc of the story (this was inspired by a tiktok)
Also, why is this so normalised in the bbc ghosts fandom?
