It's an androgynous movement that is being led by a very young generation who are all talking about being gender neutral, it's about saying "We can be anything."

So I have a curious question: as both a writer and someone who genuinely seems to care about Dan Humphrey and his character arc, how would you handle the concept of a "dark!Dan" arc, given the chance? As much as I HATE Dan's season 6 storyline and Sara Goodman's handling of the "dark!Dan" thing, I can't help but feel that there's a small nugget of something interesting there. S6!Dan was clearly written just to prop up Chuck, but I wonder what might have been if the writers still cared about Dan.
this is actually a difficult one to answer, mostly because i have too many thoughts. well, here’s to trying! (to the surprise of Nobody, this got pretty long!)
uh so, the thing i noticed about dan on first watch but became even more clear while i was rewatching certain episodes is that he’s very... passive isn’t the right word, nor is tolerant, but at the same time, something along those lines? dan keeps quiet when people hurt him or disappoint him - he doesn’t really do anything with that hurt. notable example is vanessa’s coming back? vanessa tries to pick up where they left off, and dan sorta goes along with it to the extent where both jenny and rufus need to tell vanessa that things aren’t how they were before when she left + that she actually really hurt dan - because dan isn’t telling her this himself.
basically, dan seems to be, by nature, VERY non-confrontational.
given this, i feel like dan’s whole exposé thing in s6 is very out of character  - being like “oh yeah i’m going to actively ruin the lives of the people around me and show no remorse!” feels super uncharacteristic to dan, especially out of the blue like that.
when it comes to “tolerance” - i don’t know what better word to use,  but throughout the show we see a few instances in which dan spends time with people he doesn’t like, for his own benefit or simply because it’s easier than getting out of that situation. for example, him hanging out with chuck for the charlie trout story, despite regarding chuck with the highest distaste - he puts all that aside because he needs that story, and he’s determined to get it, because he wants to succeed so badly. to some extent, i think that is bad writing (i don’t see dan forgiving someone who hurt jenny that easily or that casually) but at the same time it does fit in with the rest of dan’s character - imo he forgives georgina too easily in the s3 arc, which. does he really believe that she’s changed? maybe! but it feels weird to me because it’s like, while dan seems to have such high morals for himself he doesn’t really care what his friends are like, which i think is INTERESTING.
based on how you interpret the show canon, dan i think has had somewhere between 1 and 5 friends before the whole thing with serena, & most of these friends are his family (which is sad, i mean. rufus is rufus, alison LEFT, and jenny’s his little sister so there’s definitely things he can’t possibly talk to her about) or vanessa, who left pretty abruptly and hurt him pretty badly. i think given this, it makes sense that he would get into really weird and unhealthy friendships, because he doesn’t have much experience with healthy friendships and ends up just settling.
when we’re talking about dark!dan, these two things become super essential to me - dan’s non-confrontational slightly passive attitude to his friends, and the fact that he, potentially, could get in unhealthy friend groups and not realise it. i joke a lot about how the dan & georgina dynamic in s6 was my favourite part of the season, but it’s not actually a joke!! i can see how like. dan is still “friends” with georgina, and georgina loves to call the shots, and dan doesn’t mind doing what he’s being told. georgina for the most part seems sympathetic to dan’s problems, and dan, enabled by that friendship and her being there with him, goes and causes absolute havoc. sounds right! like, not the exposés themselves, but just the fact that someone needed to Be There Encouraging Dan to be Bad - i think That’s how it’d start.
i can imagine dan getting in with the wrong group of people, or whatever - like, dan having friends like s1 carter baizen. and it’d start innocently enough, like “oh these kids who are millionaires and billionaires don’t ever face any consequences for their actions and end up treating people from other class brackets like shit” and evolve into something like dan scamming nate at poker out of spite, and then realising that he’s in this group wayyy too deep, because, yes, he hates the rich kids as a matter of principle, and he’s been bitter about it for a long time, but “isn’t this going a bit too far, guys?” at this point though, much like jenny surrounded by her clique of mean girls, he doesn’t have an easy escape. “no,” carter will say. “we’ve only just begun. do you trust me?” and dan’s friendship is just Like That, which is not great, but he says yes and he means it.
so that’s one possible dark!dan arc i’d give him - joins a group and his intentions at the time aren’t even Inherently bad, and then just gradually slowly finds himself doing worse and worse things. at first it’d be reasonable stuff - maybe he does the anon call to yale that gets blair’s acceptance rescinded, maybe he’d find some way to mess up chuck’s business deal behind the scenes - things he can rationalise away as things they had coming because blair and chuck did something wrong and if they hadn’t, none of this would be able to affect them. then suddenly he finds himself sabotaging serena and nate and he’s like. holy fuck, what is wrong with me? that would be an interesting thing to explore.
another thing - i can’t believe i got this far into this response without mentioning jenny. but: jenny.
dan’s canonically not too pissed off about people treating him terribly. it’s what he’s used to, and he doesn’t expect any different! jenny, comparatively, is ready to say ‘fuck it’ to everyone and do whatever she wants to do to get what she wants, even if she hurts everybody around her on the way there - but that’s not what this is about, this is about how dan would never react recklessly and maliciously if someone was bad to him. but if someone hurt jenny???
unpopular opinion, but i can see him being gossip girl in THAT very specific context. girls in school are being cruel to his baby sister? he needs to shift the focus away from jenny. he needs to do something to keep his sister safe. so he creates a website, “gossip girl.” he starts blogging about one of the popular girls in his class, serena van der woodsen, because if people are busy sending tips about the girls in his grade, they’ll back off and leave jenny alone. i think if someone hurt jenny really, really badly, dan would basically go, ‘okay, i’m done being a good person’, and running gossip girl or doing something equally big that enables him to hold power over the group of girls who ruined his sister’s life? it could work.
the thing about dan being gossip girl is it makes no sense how the show did it. “a love letter”??? no, no way. dan and serena BOTH know that gossip girl is malicious and cruel and nasty in the early seasons. they both express their distaste/hatred towards the site and whatnot. dan’s “i could just write my way into the story” thing doesn’t sound right to me either, and his whole “i actually secretly wanted to be just like you guys” thing makes me shudder because. hey, whoever wrote s6, did you even watch your own show?
but dan being gossip girl because he’s bitter about the dynamics in high school, the privilege a few groups of people have, because he sees girls like jenny being treated terribly and harassed and pressured and coerced into things they don’t want to do, and he’s like, this is fucked up, why is nobody doing anything about this, what if i did something about this - and he starts gossip girl hoping that it’ll show people how none of their “friends” are really their friends, or that it’ll just form some sort of consequence for kids who never face consequences... like, i can see THAT happening and i think that’d be interesting to explore for a character like dan, especially if at some point jenny gets to like. smack him in the face with a handbag or something and go “you’re so righteous! you only made things worse with your stupid gossip site, dan!” and he’s like oh shit. but he doesn’t know what to do at that point - he’s been running the site for like 3 or 4 years and he doesn’t know who he is without it.
dan being gossip girl also makes sense given his non-confrontational nature - he can cause conflict without getting involved directly in the conflict, so it’s comfortable for him.
okay, so! wow, this got long, but you must’ve known that it would when you sent me this ask, haha. to summarise:
dan is very non-confrontational and often tolerant of the wrong people, this could be explored in a certain direction such as if he allied with toxic and dangerous people
dan never really fights for himself, but he’s naturally a protective person, so if something were to happen to jenny, i see that as the most major and natural incentive for a dark!dan arc.
wow, everything i said fits into 2 bullet points! who would’ve thought.

Last of the Tide Last of the Few
Portraits of military veterans by Royal Drawing School staff and alumni, commissioned by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales.
Tumblr media
To mark the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain in 2010, HRH The Prince of Wales – patron of the Battle of Britain Fighter Association – commissioned a series of drawings by alumni and faculty of the Royal Drawing School. The portraits recognise and record the extraordinary lives of the airmen who fought so bravely during the pivotal events of the summer of 1940, known as the “The Few”. They also pay homage to the many young pilots who sacrificed their lives fighting for the freedom of Europe. All of the surviving Battle of Britain veterans were invited to sit for the portraits. The 16 who were well enough to do so were subsequently put in touch with the artists.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“When my grandmother died I succeeded her as patron of The Battle of Britain Fighter Association, and so I used to have them to receptions and an annual tea party, and so I knew them all, and it just seemed to me absolutely crucial to try and capture some of them before they disappeared,” - The Prince told BBC documentary Art, Passion & Power: The Story of the Royal Collection.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A distinguished group of artists were selected for their skill in drawing from observation. They include four first prize winners of the BP Portrait Award: Catherine Goodman, Ishbel Myerscough, Stuart Pearson Wright and James Lloyd. All artists had either graduated from the Royal Drawing School’s postgraduate programme, The Drawing Year, or were current or past teachers at the School. Catherine Goodman is the Artistic Director of the School.

Twelve portraits of D-Day veterans went on display at The Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace, in 2015 to mark the 71st anniversary of the Allied invasion of Normandy. The exhibition, The Last of the Tide, was put together by The Royal Drawing School, in collaboration with Royal Collection Trust, and paid tribute to the extraordinary men who played a role in the D-Day landings on 6 June 1944. It was commissioned by The Prince of Wales following his attendance of 2014’s commemorations in France.
The Royal Drawing School
Tumblr media
The Royal Drawing School is an independent, not-for-profit resource that aims to raise the standard and profile of drawing through teaching and practice.  It is one of only a few institutions in the world offering in-depth, quality tuition in drawing from observation. By offering tuition and resources to art students, artists, children and the public, it aims to address the permanent need for high-quality drawing teaching in the UK.
Tumblr media
Founded in 2000 by HRH The Prince of Wales and artist Catherine Goodman as The Prince’s Drawing School, it became The Royal Drawing School in 2014.
Tumblr media
The Royal Drawing School’s principle site is in Shoreditch, East London, the heart of the city’s art, fashion and design scene. The converted 19th century warehouse houses our main studios and head office. There are three spacious, fully equipped drawing studios, a reference art library, a large ground floor exhibitions gallery and an intaglio print room. Our postgraduate programme, The Drawing Year, the majority of our Public Programme courses and a selection of our Young Artists courses run from here as well as public lectures, exhibitions and events.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Royal Drawing School runs a postgraduate programme, The Drawing Year, offering up to thirty students the opportunity to focus on drawing from observation for one year. There are no tuition fees – all students awarded a full scholarship. Students also receive a personal studio space in Hackney which allows them to continue to develop their personal practice throughout the duration of the course. Courses are taught by a distinguished faculty of over 75 drawing tutors, all of whom are practising artists. The year culminates in three exhibitions at Christie’s, King St; the Royal Drawing School Shoreditch gallery and an Open Studios exhibition.

A Year Of Shoes
Day 83/366 Georgina Goodman for Luella SS09.
A dream come true to have this shoe in my collection, I absolutely loved Luella's Spring/Summer 2009 show, I'd own every single piece if I could, but these cute little heart shoes mended the gaping hole (at the time) left by returning the Meadham Kirchhoff/Topshop shoes that didn't fit/were broken. There's a heart on the front, but also a cut-out heart in the back under the ankle strap.

Cape Town Art Fair 2019 Questionnaire
Cape Town Art Fair 2019
1.   Blank projects – The curation of the work was very similar to the exhibition in the gallery, it was very minimalistic. However, there was a wider range of variety of different mediums and much more colour.
Stevenson Gallery – They included a lot of paintings and it was curated very similarly to the show room in the gallery. There was lots of colour and included artists Penny Siopis and Zander Blom whose work is present in the show room.
Goodman Gallery – The curation of the work was completely different to that in the gallery. There were a lot more works and they were packed together which is a contrast to the usual curation of shows at the gallery.
2.  Works I liked:
Asukra Nirasawa, Cell Division, 952 Cells, 2018
Mixed media on canvas, 150x200 cm
I really enjoy the use of colour, texture and shape in this work. I’m very interested in the subject matter and think the piece is executed really well.
Tumblr media
Kim Wolhuter, First Drink
80 x 120 cm, edition 10
I love the emotion this work triggers as it is such a special and vital moment at the start of life. The photograph includes a lot of detail. The use of light and shadow creates a very emotive contrast which I really enjoy.
Tumblr media
Stacey Gillian Abe, Seat of Honor #6, #7, #8, 2017
UV digital print on Art Board
Edition 3/5
50 x 50cm
The images are very atmospheric and very powerful. I love the sense of movement within each image and the narrative that continues throughout the series.
Tumblr media
Works I disliked:
Chris Soal, The search for meaningfulness in the search for meaning, 2018
Concrete, and birch wood toothpicks held with polyurethane adhesive on ribstop fabric. 130 x 70 x 7cm
The texture of this piece makes me feel very uncomfortable. I am intrigued by the shape and materials, and want to get close but when I do my heart races and I felt extremely unnerved.
Tumblr media
Armand Bous, Les Fre Sang (Les Inseparable), 2017
124cm x 90cm
Acrylic and collage on card
I am not excited about this piece and don't enjoy the use of colour.
Tumblr media
Kenneth Bakker, Abstract, 1960
68x 129 cm
Oil on board
This piece does not intrigue or inspire me. I could walk past this with out noticing it, nothing grabs my attention. It reminds me of an art work that could be found in a waiting room or hotel reception.
Tumblr media
3.  I found that painting and photography were predominant mediums present.
4. Most booths had white walls however, a few decided to have colourful walls. Another difference which was present between the booths was the inclusion of furniture, only a couple of booths had small plants whereas most booths had table and chairs.
5. Labels have been written in a variety of ways. There was a selection of; hand written labels on the wall, written labels on the floor and labels written on to masking tape. However, most labels are neatly typed out on to paper and placed on the wall directly next to or underneath the art work. I found the signs for each booth were often too small or located in a place which sometimes made it unclear to which booth I was currently in.
6. The layout of the booths was very simple and linear, making it easy for viewers and employees to move around.
7. The lighting in the convention centre was very bright and natural light. Some works had lights directly above them or pointing on to them which often added to the work. these lights were extremely bright and often much cooler than the other lights used.
8. I noticed that people working at the fair, especially in the booths wore very simple outfits. Most people were wearing black, white or a neutral coloured clothing. They didn’t wear patterned clothing, and nothing blended in with the artworks or distracted from them.
9. Products that were being sold at the fair included, books, tote bags, t-shirts, as well as books, posters and other merchandise of the artist’s and their works. I think  the Art Fair is largely aimed people who are interested in art, such as students, lectures’/teachers, practising artists and other people working in the art industry. In addition to this, I feel that the art fair also attracts tourists, who travel from different places in the world to experience and discover the art and artists in Case Town.
10. Athi -Patra Ruga The Ever Promised Erection I, 2019
High-density foam, artificial flowers and jewels
I feel the overall aesthetic and the materials used for this piece really exemplify the spectacle of wealth. Furthermore the style of sculpture exemplifies wealth and power.
Tumblr media
11. John Newdigate (In collaboration with Ian Garrett), Flying Ants In Summer Rain, 2018
Hand painted and Glazed Porcelain.
83cm x 52cm
I feel this piece didn’t fit in with the work as the functionality of the pieces is very different from the rest of the work present.
Tumblr media
12. It was easy to speak to some staff about the work, in some booths I was approached by members of staff and was asked if I needed help with anything or wanted any information. Other booths were hesitant about sharing prices whereas others had price lists available.
13.The main sponsor of the art fair is Investec.
Investec focus on specialist banking, assest management and wealth and investment divisions. I think the possible clientele of this sponsor are people involved in the art industry such as gallery owners, curators, collectors and people who interested in investment and banking opportunities. I think they chose the art fair as a place to push their product as a place to attract a large audience and to show their interest into an industry that has the ability to create and include a lot of wealth.
14. I think the Cape Town International Convention Centre is a great place for the art fair due to it’s location and accessability. Other commercial events that take place here include; Cape Town International Jazz Festival, FanCon Cape Town Comic Con and Cape Town Homemakers Expo.
15. The oldest work I could find at the fair was Albert Newall’s Untiled. This was a watercolour and ink painting on paper which was made in 1952.
16. The youngest artist at the fair was Talia Ramikillawn who is 23 and recently graduated from Michaelis. Her work was exhibited at Smith.
17.The furniture and painting of the walls of the solo booths relate and compliment the artist work much more than that in the other booths. In a lot of the solo booths the artist’s work was much more spaced out whereas in some of the other booths the work could be quite cramped.
18. Georgina Gratix – Her work has become extremely sought after. Her style of oil painting and using bright colours is intriguing and aesthetically very pleasing.
Igshaan Adams - His use of material and the style of his work holds so much emotion.
19. The trends in subject matter this year included identity and art in the digital age. I believe art in the digital age was a trend and an important subject as the world is constantly looking towards the digital and how we relate to the digital age is constantly changing as technology becomes more advance. Identity is a popular subject matter as many people go through time in their life where they question their identity and it can often be constantly changing. I believe identity is something we are always questioning and discovering.
Materials that were on trend this year included thread, string, beads and pins. I believe this is because many artists were pushing the limit of a canvas and how they can move beyond that.
20. I would love to be represented by Smith as they seem to take a lot of young artist and support them and push them as they grow as artists.
21. I would love to work for Stephenson as I love the wide range of artist they work with and the work that is produced. The subject matter they work with is extremely important and I would love to work with these artists to exhibit their work in the most powerful and meaningful way.
22. How do galleries chose which artists they would like to show at the fair? How many international buyers are usually at the fair? How many people does it take to set up and take down the fair?
23. I would love to show my gallery or institute at the fair, as I think it would be a great way for artist to be seen and a wonderful way to create connections with other galleries. I would like my stall to be quite open to give the viewer a lot of space to walk around and see each art work clearly. I would possibly paint certain walls to relate to the work being shown. I would like to include works that can be hung from the walls as well as sculptures that could be placed on the floor.
