Today In History Dr. George Washington Carver, scientist and discoverer of over 300 products from the peanut, was successful in getting a Branch Agricultural Experiment Station and Agricultural School at Tuskegee Normal School on this date February 15, 1897. Born a slave on a Missouri farm in 1865, Carver became the first black student and the first black faculty member at what is now Iowa State University. The well-respected botanist led the bacterial laboratory work in the Systematic Botany Department. But at the urging of Booker T. Washington, Carver moved to Tuskegee Institute in Alabama to serve as the school’s director of agriculture. He used his agricultural research to help black farmers become more self-sufficient and less reliant on cotton, the major cash crop of the South. Carver developed numerous products and processes that expanded the range of Southern agriculture. At Tuskegee, Carver developed his crop rotation method, which alternated nitrate-producing legumes such as peanuts and corn with cotton, which depletes the soil of its nutrients. His innovations have been credited with the South’s economic survival in the early part of the 20th century. The Met has a special installation titled “Crossings,” which features the 1851 painting (2nd slide) by Emanuel Leutze with later interpretations or variations by Robert Colescott (1st slide) and Kara Walker (3rd slide). The Met explains: “Each of these works confronts the biases of American history and mythmaking, while revealing the role art plays in shaping popular narratives.” It’s up through the spring (no specific date listed yet), see it if you can! #arthistory #georgewashington #georgewashingtoncarver #art #robertcolescott #emanuelleutze #karawalker #themet (at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnXr_VzO-q6/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Happy Juneteenth 2022! This holiday commemorates the day in 1865 when the Black American slaves were emancipated in the USA.
In honour of Juneteenth, here is the story of an extraordinary Plant Scientist who was born into slavery in the USA and through hard work and education became an influential agricultural reformer, science communicator, and economic botany researcher. GW Carver grew up in rural Missouri, USA, and had an early affinity for plants as well as a hunger for learning. He studied botany at Iowa State University and became the first Black faculty member at this university.
At the Tuskegee University, he headed the Agricultural department and researched environmentally friendly farming methods such as crop rotation with legume crops like peanuts. Although he did not personally invent peanut butter, he promoted the South American crop’s nutritional benefits to help public health. He also researched many plant diseases and studied new ways to use plant products in medicine.
The last two decades of his life saw him become a household name on both sides of the Atlantic, where he gave public lectures on plant biology, new uses of peanuts and sweet potatoes, organic farming, racial harmony, and education for Black Americans.
He was a lifelong bachelor and a devout Christian in addition to his passion for plants. Although he suffered from delicate health his whole life, he had a strong spirit and an indomitable drive to leave the world a better place than he found it.

Today In History Dr. George Washington Carver was an agricultural scientist and inventor who developed hundreds of products using peanuts, sweet potatoes and soybeans. He is believed to have been born the month of January in 1864. Dr. Carver discovered over 300 products from peanuts, soybeans and sweet potatoes, which aided nutrition for farm families. Dr. Carver wanted to improve the lot of “the man farthest down,” the poor, one-horse farmer at the mercy of the market and chained to land exhausted by cotton. Unlike other agricultural researchers of his time, Dr. Carver saw the need to devise practical farming methods for this kind of farmer. He wanted to coax them away from cotton to such soil-enhancing, protein-rich crops as soybeans and peanuts and to teach them self-sufficiency and conservation. He achieved this through an innovative series of free, simply-written brochures that included information on crops, cultivation techniques, and recipes for nutritious meals. He also urged the farmers to submit samples of their soil and water for analysis and taught them livestock care and food preservation techniques. Dr. Carver took a holistic approach to knowledge, which embraced faith and inquiry in a unified quest for truth. Carver also believed that commitment to a larger reality is necessary if science and technology are to serve human needs rather than the egos of the powerful. His belief in service was a direct outgrowth and expression of his wedding of inquiry and commitment. One of his favorite sayings was: “It is not the style of clothes one wears, neither the kind of automobile one drives, nor the amount of money one has in the bank, that counts. These mean nothing. It is simply service that measures success.” CARTER™️ Magazine carter-mag.com #wherehistoryandhiphopmeet #historyandhiphop365 #carter #cartermagazine #georgewashingtoncarver #blackhistory #staywoke #blackhistorymonth #history #blacktwitter https://www.instagram.com/p/CnMQ9zoO1gr/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

New! We're offering Family Bible Camp Weekends on the farm. Did you know, Dr. George Washington Carver was a Bible believing Christian? "He is noted as frequently saying throughout his life that 'faith in Jesus Christ was the only mechanism by which I could effectively pursue and perform the art of science' and 'The Lord has guided me, and without my Savior, I am nothing.'' There are three sessions June 24-26, July 22-24, and a special session for women August 19-21. Our Women's Camping Weekend is a part of our Word Up camp this summer. Mothers and daughters, grandmothers and granddaughters, aunts and nieces, mentors and mentees. There will be fall sessions announced. Space is limited so reserve your space soon!
Families join us for a time of Bible study about creation and nature on our farm. Dig deep in God’s word, looking at biblical agricultural and farming practices as you explore the farm property, the animals, and the crops growing. Stay on the farm at one of our campsites or commute each day. See our demonstration plots dedicated to the African diaspora and the plots inspired by the teaching of Dr. George Washington Carver. Eat meals prepared in the traditions of the African Diaspora including Gullah food ways.
Each session has a pre-camp day on Thursday for a visit to Penn Center.
Dr. Carver is noted by to have visited Penn School as a guest speak for 'Negro History Week' back in the day. Join us for a tour of the historic campus during the pre-camp sessions. For more information and to register visit our website morninggloryhomestead.com #campingweekend
