Solarpunk Tumblr is a little piece of joy that restores hope and renews vision.
Like, I grew up in a city with a fragile ecosystem and small floral kingdom. I grew up in a country wherein the roots of Ubuntu run deep (faint, at times, but deep). I grew up a child of missionaries who taught me to exegete and, to some degree*, had been led and inspired by anti racists of their time (inner city Louisville in the 80s).
When I moved back to the US, the Christianity I saw was not what I had been taught. The ethos was consumerism, not consideration. The environment was exploited, not protected. I grew weary of being the radical, leftist, ecohippie at my Christian college, medical school, residency, and job. I've gotten quieter and quieter over the years about humanism, native endemic gardening, and even my faith.
Seeing the existence of solarpunk as a movement - and not a small movement - restores some of that optimism, where I had thought it dead. It's refreshing to know I'm not alone and, while many in the solarpunk movement might not be Christian, I find that it still meshes and fits with the faith I was initially taught, that our world and every thing and person in it is a beautiful creation, a masterpiece, and that it is our responsibility, our very first and most primal job, to shepherd and steward it, to maintain it and allow it to thrive, for itself, each other, and the one who I believe gave it to us.
(*and, granted, my parents, like most boomers, became colorblind, missed unconscious bias and systemic racism, and fixated on abortion, but, for the time I was in their house, they actively corrected overt racism and discussed the racist harms of US history)

In The Beginning
Tumblr media
1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.
9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.
10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.
11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.
12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.
14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.
17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.
19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.
21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.
23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.
24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.
25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.
31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day. — Genesis 1 | King James Version (KJV) The King James Version Bible is in the public domain. Suffering in general is a result of the brokenness of the world, which finds its root cause in human sin (see Genesis 3). But this does not mean that every instance of personal suffering is a direct consequence of one’s own sin. Often, our pain comes from the mere fact that we live in a world that is not what God had intended.
When God drove Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden (Gen. 3:23-24), they brought with them their fractured relationships and toilsome work, scratching out an existence in resistant soil. Nonetheless, God continued to provide for them (Gen. 3:21). The curse did not destroy their ability to multiply (Gen. 4:1-2), or to attain a measure of prosperity (Gen. 4:3-4). The work of Genesis 1 and 2 continues in the world of Genesis 3. There is still ground to be tilled and phenomena of nature to be studied, described, and named. Men and women must still be fruitful, must still multiply, must still govern. But now, a second layer of work must also be accomplished—the work of healing, repairing, and restoring the things that go wrong and the evils that are committed.
To put it in a contemporary context, the work of farmers, scientists, midwives, parents, leaders, and everyone in creative enterprises is still needed. But so is the work of exterminators, doctors, funeral directors, corrections officers, forensic auditors, and everyone in professions that restrain evil, forestall disaster, repair damage, and restore health. In truth, everyone’s work is a now mixture of creation and repair, encouragement and frustration, success and failure, joy and sorrow.

“When I first heard that all humans were created in the image of God, I pictured God with a million eyes and a million noses and a million mouths. It was horrifying. What did this mean, all humans? If God walked in the garden of Eden, whose two legs did he walk with? Did they look like mine, with knees black and ashy? It is not wholly unusual for individuals or cultures to imagine God as being like them in some way. Perhaps this is because we lack an imagination for a being who loves us and doesn’t resemble us. Things that are unlike us strike us as unsafe.
When I encounter the unfamiliar—a new food, a stranger on the train—I may be intrigued, but I am nearly always cautious. I’ve no frame of reference for how it might hurt me, what compels it to violence or tenderness.
If God is like me, then perhaps she becomes more predictable. Safer. But when we force our picture of God on another, or when God is presented as singular, we tend to colonize the image of God in others...”

Genesis 1
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them…And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. Genesis 1:27-28,31 God created us in His image. We are the only things He created so special. Yes, everything He created is unique. Amazing. Intricate. But we are the only creation made literally…

Genesis 1:1-2 | The Creation
[John 1:1-5; Hebrews 11:1-3] ¹ In the beginning GOD created the Heavens & the Earth. ² Now the Earth was formless & void, and darkness was    over the surface of the deep. And the SPIRIT of GOD    was hovering over the surface of the waters.
Genesis 1:3-5 | Day 1
³ And GOD said, “Let there be light,” & there was light. ⁴ And seeing that the light was good, GOD separated   the light from the darkness. ⁵ GOD called the light “day,” & the darkness HE called    “night.” And there was evening, & there was morning    —the first day.
Genesis 1:6-8 | Day 2
⁶ And GOD said, “Let there be an expanse between    the waters, to separate the waters from the waters.” ⁷ So GOD made the expanse & separated the waters    beneath it from the waters above. And it was so. ⁸ GOD called the expanse “sky;” & there was evening,    & there was morning—the second day.
Genesis 1:9-13 | Day 3
⁹ GOD said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered    into one place, so the dry land may appear.”    And it was so.
¹⁰ GOD called the dry land “Earth,” & the gathering of     waters HE called “seas;” & GOD saw that it was good.
¹¹ Then GOD said, “Let the Earth bring forth vegetation:     seed-bearing plants & fruit trees, each bearing fruit     with seed according to its kind.” And it was so.
¹² The Earth produced vegetation: seed-bearing plants     according to their kinds & trees bearing fruit with     seed according to their kinds.     And GOD saw that it was good.
¹³ And there was evening, & there was morning     —the third day.
Genesis 1:14-19 | Day 4
¹⁴ And GOD said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of     the sky to distinguish between the day & the night, &     let them be signs to mark the seasons & days & years.
¹⁵ And let them serve as lights in the expanse of the sky     to shine upon the Earth.” And it was so.
¹⁶ GOD made two great lights: the greater light to rule the     day & the lesser light to rule the night. And HE made     the stars as well.
¹⁷ GOD set these lights in the expanse of the sky to shine     upon the Earth, ¹⁸ to preside over the day & the night, &     to separate the light from the darkness. And GOD saw     that it was good. ¹⁹ And there was evening, & there was     morning—the fourth day.
Genesis 1:20-23 | Day 5
²⁰ And GOD said, “Let the waters teem with living creatures,    & let birds fly above the Earth in the open expanse of the    sky.” ²¹ So GOD created the great sea creatures & every    living thing that moves, with which the waters teemed    according to their kinds, & every bird of flight after its kind.    And GOD saw that it was good.
²² Then GOD blessed them & said, “Be fruitful & multiply     & fill the waters of the seas, & let birds multiply on the    Earth.” ²³ And there was evening, & there was morning     —the fifth day.
Genesis 1:24-31 | Day 6
²⁴ And GOD said, “Let the Earth bring forth living creatures    according to their kinds: livestock, land crawlers, & beasts     of the Earth according to their kinds.” And it was so.
²⁵ GOD made the beasts of the Earth according to their     kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, & every-     thing that crawls upon the Earth according to its kind.
And GOD saw that it was good.
²⁶ Then GOD said, “Let US make man in OUR image,     after OUR likeness, to rule over the fish of the sea     & the birds of the air, over the livestock, & over all     the Earth itself & every creature that crawls upon it.”
²⁷ So GOD created man in HIS own image; in the     image of GOD HE created him; male & female     HE created them.
²⁸ GOD blessed them & said to them, “Be fruitful &     multiply, & fill the Earth & subdue it; rule over the     fish of the sea & the birds of the air and every     creature that crawls upon the Earth.”
²⁹ Then GOD said, “Behold, I have given you every     seed-bearing plant on the face of all the Earth, &     every tree whose fruit contains seed.
They will be yours for food.
³⁰ And to every beast of the Earth & every bird of the     air & every creature that crawls upon the Earth—     everything that has the breath of life in itI have     given every green plant for food.”
    And it was so.
³¹ And GOD looked upon all that HE had made, &     indeed, it was very good. And there was evening,     & there was morning—the sixth day.

Matthew Henry Commentary on the Whole Bible
Tumblr media
Genesis 1
The foundation of all religion being laid in our relation to God as our Creator, it was fit that the book of divine revelations which was intended to be the guide, support, and rule, of religion in the world, should begin, as it does, with a plain and full account of the creation of the world—in answer to that first enquiry of a good conscience... 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
