hey, UK trans allies, do you have a minute?
There's a new petition asking the government to add an amendment to the GRA, allowing the families of trans people to get a posthumous GRC for their deceased trans family members, and allowing terminally ill trans people to get a GRC, so they can be buried with the dignity they deserve.
I don't have my hopes up (we all know the governments track record) but I also think that anything is worth a shot. Trans people deserve dignity in death, too.
(If you're not from the UK, please share it! Don't listen to people who tell you to use a fake postcode to sign- even one fake signature could void the whole petition. Please don't take that risk <3)

Petition text:
Legally recognise non-binary gender
"The Government needs to recognise non-binary as a legal gender. Non-binary people in the LGBTQ+ community feels silenced and invisible. We need the Government to reform the Gender Recognition Act 2004 to legally recognise non-binary as a gender and help non-binary people to feel heard
Currently non-binary people are not recognised in law. This leads to misgendering, especially in institutional organisations. Having our gender legally recognised would help us to feel so much more respected and accepted within society, in accordance with fundamental British values. Non-binary people have campaigned for years to be recognised, a change is needed. We want to be seen within society and currently we feel hushed away. Change the law so we can have our place recognised in society."
The petition was started by River Fleming @river_fleming_x on Instagram.
I'm not British and can't sign this petition but I do want it to get many many more votes!

X Marks the Spot
Okay, UK Citizens, we're giving this another go. Sign and/ or share, please (if you're not UK-based, PLEASE share). It went pretty much as you'd expect last time: decent public support, got to debate stage, some lovely speeches from supportive MPs, then… random shit about women's prisons and sports from people unwilling to do anything to address the actual issues in prisons and gendered sports. 🙄
So behold, we're going to try again to join the increasing numbers of countries out there who allow an X or similar on the passports and driving licences of nonbinary folk.
(And we'll keep bloody trying until the UK rejoins the 21st Century.)

Her Majesty’s Passport Office
So I apologise for once again being absent despite the new phone. When I finished work Friday morning I had an email from HM Passport Office saying in order to change my gender they require more proof. Namely they are requesting a doctor’s note saying the change is permanent.
I sent the Passport Office my Gender Recognition Certificate with my application.
The Passport Office’s own guidance say this is proof of change of gender.
The process for even getting a GRC requires you to provide two doctor’s notes.
I refer to the fine print of the GRC printed at the bottom of the document itself, “This certificate is issued in pursuit of the Gender Recognition Act of 2004. By Section 9 of the Gender Recognition Act, the person to whom this certificate has been issued is for all purposes the gender shown.” Meaning to even refuse that as evidence of my gender is in breach of UK law.
I have been on the phone with the Passport Office repeatedly since Friday arguing with them and they seem very adamant not to accept this documentation. I am extremely stressed.

For anyone not in the UK like me (or if you are in the UK and you like concise, well researched videos about major news events), TLDR News did a great segment on WHAT THE HECK is happening in Scotland right now and why it's a big freaking deal.

FLORIDA BANS GENDER MARKER CHANGES ON DRIVERS LICENSES
From Esqueer_ on Twitter:
"BREAKING: Florida has taken unilateral administrative action and banned gender marker changes on drivers licenses. Any trans person who has had theirs changed is potentially subject to suspension. Anyone attempting to change it after could be criminally prosecuted for "fraud."
If the language used in this directive is taken at face value, any trans person driving with a changed gender marker on their drivers license could be criminally charged with fraud.
This interpretation could potentially apply to anyone driving in the state, including tourists.
Any out trans person could have their license revoked or suspended at any time under this policy and unlikely to be able to be renewed with the current gender marker.
This is a massive and intrusive change erasing legal recognition and criminalizing trans people in the state."

-------
It should be clear by now that those of us who are currently in "legal" limbo waiting for our birth certificate ammendments are SOL.
Trans Floridians and trans folks driving through Florida, please be very, very careful. Trans Floridians about to change your gender marker - unfortunately, I suggest cancelling your DMV appointment, in the event an overzealous clerk wants to charge you with fraud. Don't even bother with the birth certificate -- it will be a waste of time and money and potentially put you on some sort of List. :/
Again, I urge all trans Americans, regardless of state of residency, to get their passports asap. Not only to flee the country in an emergency, but as a form of ID that still has your proper gender on it.

Passport Update
So today my GP has rang to say that they will provide me a doctor’s note free of charge. And for those thinking, “Wait! Don’t you live in the UK? I thought you had free healthcare.” We do, however there are certain things doctors can still charge for. A doctor’s note is one of them. So the fact they have kindly agreed to waive their charge is nice.
Provided the Passport Office doesn’t suddenly decide both my GRC and a doctor’s note are unacceptable evidence that my change of gender is permanent. I should at the very least be able to get my passport now. However, after what they have put me through they can get stuffed if they think I am dropping it at getting that little blue book.
I do NOT want this to happen to any other trans person. The fact that their excuses have varied from “the rules have change and we just haven’t updated our website” to “We can choose to reject any document as evidence that we desire”, even one issued by Her Majesty’s Courts and Tribunals Service apparently. Yeah, I will not be dropping this.
This shouldn’t have happened in the first place and I won’t let it happen to any other trans person. A GRC should make it easier to change your gender on ID. It should not make it harder.
The Home Office can answer to both my solicitor and my MP.

I haven't seen a lot of coverage in the news about this, but my state has just advanced legislation on a bill that would criminalize trans bathroom use in publicly owned buildings. this could mean up to 6 months in jail and up to $1000 in fees for those convicted.
most alarming aspects of this bill:
-"publicly owned buildings" include airports, schools, libraries, government offices, some hospitals, and most terrifyingly AND explicitly within the bill, domestic violence shelters and rape crisis facilities. transgender people, who are estimated to be almost 4 times more likely to be victims of violent crimes than cisgender people, could become criminalized in the very spaces they seek out to shelter from abuse.
-on that note, the bill potentially threatens federal funding of already-underfunded domestic violence and sexual assault facilities. to recieve federal grants, facilities are required to follow nondiscrimination laws. this law could place the facilities in danger of losing the grants they rely on. this is severely going to impact victims' abilities to access critically needed services.
-the bill legally defines "sex" in a way that has a lot of potential impact across state legislature. according to the bill’s text, HB 257 would legally define a female as “an individual whose biological reproductive system is of the general type that functions in a way that could produce ova,” and a male as “an individual whose biological reproductive system is of the general type that functions to fertilize the ova of a female.” this could effectively end the state's legal recognition of trans people.
-the bill demands that trans people who DO use bathrooms in publicly owned buildings must have undergone both gender reassignment surgery and have had their birth certificate changed. this has several issues, obviously, but the biggest one I want to highlight is that this opens the door to potential genital inspection by law enforcement if someone is accused of being transgender in a bathroom. in addition to any other indignities suffered by being harassed by cops when trying to use the restroom, it is completely possible for law enforcement to now demand to see whether someone's genitals are in compliance with these laws. it's an unconscionable and humiliating invasion of privacy.
-the bill requires trans students to develop a "privacy plan" with their school in order to arrange access to unisex spaces. if unisex bathrooms are unavailable, the student can be granted access to a sex-designated space “through staggered scheduling or another policy provision that provides for temporary private access.”
-the bill allows the state’s attorney general to impose a fine of up to $10,000 per day on local governments that don’t enforce the bill. in essence, any government that isn't sufficiently committed to enforcing these draconian laws may face massive fines until they have reached the attorney general's standard of enforcement.
this is one of the most unbelievably severe anti-trans laws that have ever been proposed in the united states. it would effectively ban trans people from participating in public life, harm nearly every single victim of domestic violence and sexual assault who seeks services in the state, enforce criminality on random trans people in bathrooms, and open every single person who could be potentially accused of being trans up to a wave of harassment and discrimination from both private citizens and law enforcement. I'm not being hyperbolic when I say that this law would literally force me and my transfemme fiancee to flee this state.
the law's been fast tracked to an insane degree through the legislature. similarly to the anti-dei bill currently making its way through, it's only been a week since it was introduced, and it's already passed the house, and is now up for vote in the senate. if it passes both sets of votes, the only thing left in its way is the governor's decision to veto.
please share this post. make as much noise as you can. if you live in utah, please call and email your district senator as soon as possible. it doesn't matter how late you see this. the bill is up for vote this week (1/23/24 at the time of writing) and we need to do whatever we physically can to protest its passing. we've already moved past the opportunity for public comment on the bill, but a few organizations have called for a rally at the capitol steps on thursday (1/25/24) at noon. if you are in the salt lake area or are able to make it there, please consider attending. wear a mask and bring a sign. we are stronger together.

Ludicrous decision by the UK government who have announced they will refuse to recognise Scottish Gender Recognition certificates.
This will force trans people to apply for a separate GRC for the rest of the UK.
