Manchester City's Sergio Aguero (centre) and Sheffield Wednesday's Joey Pelupessy (right) battle for the ball Sheffield Wednesday v Manchester City - FA Cup - Fifth Round - Hillsborough 04-03-2020 .
Manchester City won a 20th consecutive domestic cup tie to move into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win at Sheffield Wednesday as Tottenham crashed out on penalties to Norwich on Wednesday.
Sergio Aguero scored the only goal for the holders eight minutes into the second half as Wednesday goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith failed to get a strong enough hand to the Argentine's low strike.
A solitary goal was scant reward for the dominance of Pep Guardiola's men as the Catalan was rewarded for naming a strong line-up against the Championship side.
Riyad Mahrez and Gabriel Jesus missed glorious first half chances, while Nicolas Otamendi and Benjamin Mendy hit the woodwork before Aguero finally made the breakthrough.
Despite failing to add to their tally, City maintained hopes of a cup treble after lifting a third consecutive League Cup on Sunday and beating Real Madrid 2-1 in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie.
“He is a good manager and crazy," said Aguero of Guardiola's relentless demand to keep winning.
City will travel to Newcastle in the quarter-finals.
Norwich will host Derby or Manchester United in their first quarter-final since 1992 after seeing off Spurs 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
A bad night for Tottenham, who have now lost their last four games in all competitions, was compounded when midfielder Eric Dier climbed into the stands to confront supporters who had allegedly insulted members of his family.
"I think Eric did what we as professionals cannot do but when someone insults you and your family is involved, especially your younger brother," said Spurs boss Jose Mourinho.
"This person insulted Eric, the younger brother was not happy with the situation and Eric was not happy. But we as professionals cannot do what he did."
Jan Vertonghen headed Tottenham into an early lead, but Mourinho's decision to hand 36-year-old goalkeeper Michel Vorm his first appearance of the season backfired.
The Dutchman spilled a long-range effort from Kenny McLean and Josip Drmic bundled home the rebound to level.
Both sides then tired badly in extra-time, but neither could find a winner and saves from Tim Krul to deny Troy Parrott and Gedson Fernandes allied to Erik Lamela's wild attempt that flew over the bar saw another shot at a trophy for Spurs slip by.
Mourinho again blamed the absence of key personnel such as Harry Kane and Son Heung-min to injury for defeat.
"Some of my players were really in trouble and they made an incredible effort to try," said Mourinho.
"I don't have one single negative feeling towards my players. I can cope with negative moments in football, but I feel really sorry for my players."
Leicester also booked their place in the last eight with a much-needed 1-0 win over Birmingham thanks to Ricardo Pereira's late header.

Benfica 1-1 Ajax: Police clash with Dutch fans during Champions League tie
Ajax came from behind to rescue a Champions League point at Benfica, during a Group E match marred by violence in the stands.
Police and supporters clashed in the away end at the Estadio da Luz, where former Southampton striker Dusan Tadic cancelled out Goncalves Oliveira’s opener.
Ajax could have progressed to the knockout stages had they won.
The Dutch side travel to Athens to face AEK Athens in their next match on 27 November, knowing a victory will take them through.
Benfica still stand an outside chance of progression, but they will need to win both games and hope Ajax drop five or more points in their remaining two fixtures.
Robert Lewandowski’s two goals saw Bayern Munich beat AEK Athens 2-0 to all but seal their progress to the knockout stages – the German champions need just a point from their next match.
Elsewhere, Hoffenheim came from two goals down to draw level in the 92nd minute at Lyon as the Frenchmen lost ground on Manchester City in Group F.
Valencia claimed their first victory of the campaign with a 3-1 win over Young Boys courtesy of goals by Mina Lorenzo and Carlos Soler in Group H’s early kick-off.
Roma beat CSKA Moscow 2-1 as the Italian side continue to keep pace with holders Real Madrid in Group G.

Sanches scores and receives standing ovation on Bayern return
Renato Sanches marked his first Bayern Munich appearance since a disastrous loan spell at Swansea with a Champions League goal at former side Benfica.
He started a move in his own half and finished it off when he converted James Rodriguez’s cross from close range.
Sanches received a standing ovation from the home fans following the goal.
The 21-year-old Portugal midfielder only played 15 times for the Swans – and none after 27 January – as they were relegated from the Premier League.

Sanches’ strike was actually his first club goal since leaving Benfica for Bayern Munich in 2016 – the summer he won the European Championship with Portugal.
His loan spell at Swansea was lacklustre even before the hamstring injury he suffered in an FA Cup tie with Notts County – which was his most recent club game.
Then Swansea manager Carlos Carvalhal said in May that Sanches had a “very bad season” and suggested he should look to rejoin Benfica.[3]
Robert Lewandowski had scored the opener for Bayern Munich at the Estadio da Luz.

Benfica reach Champions League group stage
Eduardo Salvio scored twice, including a penalty, as Benfica beat PAOK 5-2 on aggregate to make it through to Thursday’s Champions League draw.
The teams were tied 1-1 after the first leg in Greece and Aleksandar Prijovic put the visitors ahead on the night.
But goals from Jardel, two from Salvio and Pizzi put Benfica in control, with PAOK having Leo Matos sent off.
Benfica’s victory means they take a spot in pot two ahead of last season’s runners-up Liverpool.
Dutch champions and 1988 European Cup winners PSV Eindhoven safely made it through to the group stages with a 6-2 aggregate win over BATE Borisov.
Mark van Bommel’s side won the second leg 3-0 courtesy of goals from Steven Bergwijn, Luuk de Jong and Mexico international Hirving Lozano and will be in pot three.
Red Star Belgrade, who lifted the European Cup in 1991, took their place in pot four by coming from 2-0 behind to draw 2-2 against Salzburg and making through on away goals.
Munas Dabbur struck twice for the Austrian champions, but two goals in two minutes from El Fardou Ben Nabouhane and Milos Degenek was enough for Red Star.
