Thank you for keeping the 3zun fandom going - and with so much positivity too. Sometimes it feels like it's just tumbleweeds in here...that and your art lol. So thanks.
it's tough being in a fandom that used to be huge but now feels like it's gently winding down 😭 but we will survive!

Hey Frank! <3 what are some of your personal favorites when it comes to etymology? Personally, Window deriving from the words for "Wind" and "Eye" has to be up there!
I love etymology (it's one of the reasons I enjoy Homestuck) but it's kind of hard to answer as an objective fact about all of my favorite words. (It's like if someone said "I really like The Godfather. Who hasn't? It's about cool mafia families!")
I was going to have a big post about this the other day, but it got long and I deleted it. Here is one thing I did write:
"Window is actually an unusual case in that it is almost a derivative, but not really -- the word is simply related to wind in many cases.
The etymology of window is more complicated, involving the Latin word windo "I open" (windus) and Middle High German wenden (wendan); compare English wend.
The root word in both wind and wendan was not necessarily "wind" (e.g. wing) but rather a verb like "to bend." This is an ancient Indo-European verb with roots in many languages: Latin windio from PIE *y- "yield" (windis), German wenden and Dutch wenden from PIE *y-we-nd-; Old English wende is related to Dutch wenden and English "end." (The Old English term came to mean "to bend," while modern English simply means "end.")
In Latin and German, the primary source for this verb is windus, which like many words of this class also came to mean "to open" or "to expose" ("wound" in German and Dutch).
This is the source of many words like wound ("a split in the skin, a cut"), windowing ("an opening, hole"), window ("a hole or crack in a wall or in a fence"), and windblowing ("faint, cold wind"). (The word for "window" in wind itself -- wendan -- ultimately comes from wendan via German wenden, but does not have any direct connection to windo or *y-.)
"What?" you might say. "Why 'wound'? What about'sunshine'? You're telling me that'sunshine' is etymologically connected to 'wound'? What kind of nonsense is this?"
Wind is sometimes used in pairs with bright (which was originally used only in the sense "bright sun"; note the words "sundark," "sunshine," "sunnyday," and "summer") to mean both "brightness" in general and "the sun in particular" (e.g. "the sun shone bright across the sky").
This leads to a word like bright-winding, meaning both "brightness, sunlight" and "the bright sun shining in the sky," which in turn leads to words like bright-winded, which in turn leads to wind-bright, meaning "windy" or "foggy," as in "wind-bright, foggy day."
(I'm assuming here that these pairs of roots -- as in the words "bright-winded" and "bright-winded" -- don't have a literal source in the source words for wind- and bright-; I know I keep mentioning them, and I'm afraid I might be a bit of a wordcel, but I really want to get this right for some reasons.)
The interesting case is bright-wind or wind-bright. The wind root is the German word for "breeze, breeze" (brennen, brechen); the bright root is from the Old English burhna, which may have ultimately been related to the same verb as wind- and was used to mean "sun-baked clay, soil." Some sources also claim to connect burhna and window- but I have never heard a strong case for this.
If you look at these etymologies you find that while the basic word of each etymology does not involve "breeze" or "wind," in fact it is the word for "breeze" or "wind" in the opposite direction -- wind comes from brightness, brightness comes from wind.
This can mean that a word is originally related to wind without being originally related to windo or *y- in the source word, and this can lead to two words having etymological similarities while not actually being related in any direct way.
"This," says Frank, "is how we ended up with wind-bright" as an etymology."
(I have the same etymological feeling about "happiness" and "gay," except for some complicated reasons.)

Book recs: Queer fantasy, part 1
A note: queer here does not necessarily mean “guarantee of an f/f or m/m ship with a happy ending”, but rather simply a significant presence of queerness. Some of the books feature no romance but has a same gender attracted/trans/a-spectrum lead, or features an m/f relationship with bisexual, trans or aro/ace characters, or simply features a world-building which is heavily queer inclusive in ways that don’t always compare to our own ideas of sexuality and gender. I have however disqualified works where the only queer presence is along the lines of “gay best friend” or a blink and you’ll miss it confirmation that never comes up again.
For queer sci-fi recs, click here! For a masterpost of book rec lists, click here! For more details on the books recommended here, continue under the readmore. Titles marked with * are my personal favorites!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez*
AKA the book the killed me. Two boys travel throughout their land with the body of a god as her horrible, horrible children try to hunt them down. It’s hard to explain more than that, but trust me when I say the narrative voice and literary techniques are incredibly unique in how they blend past and present, reality and story, lead and bystander. Truly an experience. Features an m/m romance.
The Unbroken (Magic of the Lost series) by C.L. Clark*
Tourraine, who was stolen as a child and trained as a soldier for the empire that conquered her home, is recruited by Luka, the future leader of the conquering country, to root out a rebellion. A game of twisted loyalties and attraction is soon to develop as the two must decide where their priorities lie: with each other, or with their respective countries and people.
Sing the Four Quarters (Quarters series) by Tanya Huff*
Though a royal by birth, princess Annice renounced her throne to become a bard, a musician who through training can Sing elemental spirits to do their bidding. Ten years later, she goes on the run for two counts of treason, first by imperiling the succession order by becoming pregnant, second by helping her ex, and the father of her child, escape the palace dungeons and a death sentence. Bisexual lead in an f/f relationship. When I first read this book I described it as, and I quote, 'a fucking delight', and I stand by that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Unspoken Name (The Serpent Gates duology) by C.L. Clark*
The sort of portal fantasy you get when all the worlds connected by portals are fantasy worlds, and none of them are ours. The portals themselves become simply a part of the worldbuilding that the characters use to travel between fascinating places, and it’s all really cool. It follows Csorwe (lesbian orc assassin whom I love), who grew up in a cult, indoctrinated as a child sacrifice to a god. But on the day she was meant to die, she instead chose to follow a powerful wizard and train to become his loyal servant and sword. Aside from being an excellent fantasy, it’s also a close look at the hard path of unlearning indoctrination and the search for love and validation where you’ll never find it, and learning to live for yourself. Multiple queer leads.
The Jasmine Throne (The Burning Kingdoms series) by Tasha Suri
A princess held captive by her own brother, who wants to see her dead, tries to trick a servant into helping her escape, but with undeniable attraction growing between them and the servant having her own goals of liberation things quickly get complicated, both between them and in the country at large as rebellion and dangerous magic brews. Sapphic romance.
The Priory of the Orange Tree (The Roots of Chaos duology) by Samantha Shannon
Queen Sabran's lineage has protected the country of Inys from dragons for a thousand years, but now the safety of their land is threatened as Sabran is yet to conceive and assassins are closing in. Lady-in-waiting Ead is secretly part of a society of hidden mages, and is using her position to protect her queen. Meanwhile, on the other side of the sea, dragonrider Tané is faced with an impossible choice. The fates of all three are intertwined as they attempt to stop the rise of a great dragon. 800+ page epic fantasy. Sapphic romance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Raven and the Reindeer by T. Kingfisher*
Young adult, fairy tale retelling of the Snow Queen. When Gerta's friend Kai is stolen away by the evil Snow Queen, Gerta must depart on a mission to save him. On the way, she encounters, among others, a talking raven and a pretty robber girl who become her allies. Sapphic romance.
The Rise of Kyoshi (Kyoshi duology) by F.C. Yee*
Young adult. Set in the Avatar universe, but aimed at an older audience than the animated series. Though she will one day be one of the most well-known avatars of the land, for now, young Kyoshi is but a humble girl who has yet to find out her true destiny as the bender of all four elements and keeper of balance of her world. When betrayal strikes and a dear friend is lost, Kyoshi goes on the run alongside fiesty firebender Rangi to find out the truth of her destiny and power. Sapphic romance.
Legends & Lattes (Legends & Lattes series) by Travis Baldree
Viv is tired of adventures and bloodshed - now she wants a peaceful life, and decides to go after it by opening a café. But going from warrior to small business owner is easier said than done, especially when Viv's old life comes knocking. Best described as a cozy fantasy, with a largely low-stakes but heartwarming plot and a sapphic romance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Phoenix Extravagant by Yoon Ha Lee
Gyen Jebi is an artist, but making a living is difficult. When offered a job by the Ministry of Armor to paint the magical sigils that animate their automaton soldiers, they have little choice but to accept. But as Jebi sees the dark depths of the government, especially the shocking source of their magical paint, they must find a way to resist. Perhaps by freeing the Ministry's mighty automaton dragon... Nonbinary main character.
Crier's War by Nina Varela
Young adult. Who says sci-fi has monopoly on robots? In Crier’s War, artificially created automae have defeated and subjugated humans, who live as second class citizens. Young Ayla goes undercover as a servant, meaning to assassinate automae girl and Sovereign’s daughter Crier. This would be easier if the two weren’t quick to develop feelings for each other.
Black Sun (Between Earth and Sky trilogy) by Rebecca Roanhorse
In a pre-columbian inspired world, sea captain Xiala, gifted with an unusual connection to the sea, travels with a mysterious scarred and blind passenger toward a dangerous goal as prophecy heralds the return of a god. Features among others bisexual and nonbinary leads.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin*
In a world regularly torn apart by natural disasters, a big one finally strikes and society as we know it falls, leaving people floundering to survive in a post apocalyptic world, its secrets and past to be slowly revealed. We follow a mother as she races through this world to find and save her daughter, stolen away by a father who just murdered their son after having discovered a terrible secret of their family. Does feature multiple queer characters and a main polyam relationship, but DO NOT read this expecting happy queer relationships as this series handles many dark subjects (you should still read it though, it's incredibly good).
In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan*
Young adult. Kids who can walk between our world and a magical one get recruited into a magical school that trains them to be either fighters or diplomats. Our lead decides that fighting is stupid and that he’s going to peacefully solve every conflict ever, all while being the most delightfully obnoxious little brat possible and getting involved in the most bisexual love triangle imaginable. Very good, funny, and heart-felt coming of age story.
Our Bloody Pearl D.N. Bryn
A siren who’s been held captive by a pirate is freed, but too injured to survive on their own as their tail has become paralyzed. Another pirate captain decides to help them out and has to work to win their trust. Fairly fluffy and light on world-building and plot (though there is a bit of a revenge story in there), with a focus on character and recovery. m/nb romance with an asexual love interest.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A Master of Djinn by P. Djélí Clark
Set in an alternate 1910’s steampunk Cairo, where djinn and other creatures live alongside humans. We get to follow an investigator as she races to catch a criminal using a powerful object to control djinn and stir unrest. Fantastically creative and fresh, and also features a buddy cop dynamic between two female leads as well as a sapphic romance.
Black Water Sister by Zen Cho*
As a toddler, Jessamyn Teoh left Malaysia. Now a young adult, she’s broke, closeted, and moving back. There she’s faced with the ghost of her estranged grandmother, Ah Ma, who was a medium and avatar of the deity the Black Water Sister in life. Now she demands Jess' help in exacting revenge against a gang boss that offended her god. Meanwhile, all Jess wants is to get her life back on track.
Heaven Official's Blessing (Heaven Official's Blessing series) by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu
Once, Xie Lian was the beloved crown prince of a kingdom. Then he rose to godhood at a young age, and was expected to take a step back from his land and his people, but in his inability to do so ended up losing everything. Now, eight hundred years later, Xie Lian has ascended to godhood for a third time, forgotten by mortals and the laughing stock of Heaven. Trying to rebuild his reputation, Xie Lian sets off on a mission, and on it encounters an infamous demon king who inspires fear in all of heaven. M/M romance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jane, Unlimited by Kristin Cashore*
Young Adult. Jane is invited by an old acquaintance to an extravagant gala in an island mansion, stranding her among the rich and glamorous. But being surrounded by rich people is the least of Jane’s problems: the mansion is housing secrets, some of them tied to Jane’s own family. The mansion offers her five choices, all of them leading her down different paths and different answers. Jane, Unlimited is a choose-your-own adventure story of sorts, featuring five different endings in five different genres, each more off the wall bonkers than the next. It also features a bisexual main character!
Every Heart a Doorway (Wayward Children series) by Seanan McGuire*
A tumblr favorite, the Wayward Children novellas feature a school open to children who have returned from adventures in other realms and now have trouble adapting back to regular life. Some installments are set in our world, others follow children as they have their otherworldly adventures. The main characters vary between books, but are generally pretty diverse with among others asexual, trans, intersexual and sapphic leads. Both funny and dark, it takes a closer look at the trauma many endure growing up different.
The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern*
Surreal and fairy tale-esque, The Starless Sea is stories within a story, following graduate student Zachary as he finds a strange book which, in-between other tales, tells a story from his own childhood. Trying to find out how this came to be, Zachary gets involved with a pink-haired woman and a handsome man who are doing their utmost to protect a strange, otherworldly library available only through magical doors. It’s a book hard to put in words, but which I once described as “romantic without being a romance while stile having a love story at it’s core”, and which can be summed up only as “an Experience”. It’s also quite gay!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not Even Bones by Rebecca Schaeffer*
Young adult. Nita isn’t a murderer - technically. She just dissects the bodies of supernatural beings her mother brings home and sells for parts on the black market. But when her mother brings home a still living victim, Nita has had enough and frees him. As it turns out, no good deed goes unpunished as Nita is betrayed, her own nature as a supernatural entity outed as she’s kidnapped and placed behind bars. Now she must find a way to escape before she's sold for parts. Features two aroace leads and a queerplatonic relationship, though it isn’t made textual until book 3 and briefly masquerades as a romance, which is pretty hilarious.
The Last Sun (The Tarot Sequence) by K.D. Edwards
Urban fantasy. Rune Saint John is the only survivor of the massacre against the Sun Court years prior. Now he’s been hired by Lady Judgement to find her missing son, Addam. Alongside his companion and bodyguard Brand, Rune goes on to question Addam's family and business contacts all over New Atlantis, island city and home of the Atlanteans after their original home was destroyed by ordinary humans. But the more he digs, the more Rune finds clues that Addam's absence is connected to Rune's own tragic past. M/M romance.
Gossamer Axe by Gael Baudino
Centuries ago in Ireland, Chairiste Ní Cummen was trained in the secrets of music and magic. But her pride was her downfall, trapping her and her lover in the land of the Sidh. Only Chairiste escaped, hoping to one day win her lover's freedom in musical battle with the fairy that holds her captive. Now she is Christa Cruitare, harp teacher in the modern world and all but resigned to her loss. Until she comes across a great new music: heavy metal. Taking one last chance to win her lover's freedom, Christa sets out to gather other skilled musicians and bring them with her in her final battle. Sapphic romance.
Bonus AKA I haven't read these yet but they seem really cool
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pantomime (Micah Grey trilogy) by Laura Lam
Young adult. On the surface, Gene's life is that of a noble debutante. In reality, she has secrets: she's both male and female, and has magical abilities that hasn’t been seen in an age. In the face of a betrayal from her parents, Gene runs away from home, dresses up as a boy, and joins a circus. Intersex main character.
Ghost Walk by Kay Solo
Maaya Sahni can see ghosts, and does her best to survive in her small isolated town by keeping her head down. But when an entire street full of people is spirited away by faceless specters that scares even ghosts, Maaya must find a way to stop the specters. Lesbian main character.
Swordspoint (Riverside series) by Ellen Kushner
In Riverside, duels are the way to settle disputes, and Richard St. Vier is the undisputed master of the sword - at least until a death is met not with awe but with outrage. M/M romance.

Sword gays showdown, round 1 of bracket one
Propaganda:
For Percy:
shes canonically ace :] and shes got a REAL ASS GOD DAMN SWORD!!!!!!
She wields a real ass goddamn sword and kicks ass with it! She can also channel her magic wizard tower powers into said sword which is also badass. She also has some really banger lines in the show.
She carries a real-ass-goddamned-sword ! Which is in genuine reference to when she's first introduced in the series! She also constantly carries said sword around and uses it in combat later in episode 7
For Runaan:
Runaan is a Moonshadow elf, and the deadliest assassin in all of Xadia. His artificer husband Ethari crafted his magical bowblade - a bow that splits into two swords - and at the command of the Dragon Throne, Runaan stealths into the human lands to take out dangerous enemies without risking any extra lives on either side.
Has a weapon that can transition between being used as a bow and blades. Said bowblade was made by his blacksmith husband, who also fights with him. He's also disabled in fanon and is canonically a foster father. Also he's hot.
He's the leader of an elite group of Moonshadow assassins, the deadliest assassin force in their world. He fights with a bowblade (dual wielding swords that, when attached at the hilts, turns into a bow). It is the COOLEST weapon ever! Runaan was the only survivor when he and his team infiltrated Katolis Castle to successfully kill the king. He's canonically gay and has a husband, who is a blacksmith/craftsman and makes the weapons his husband wields. Runaan is a very intense man, but he's such a softie when around his husband.
He definitely uses one or two sword type things, and the episode his husband first shows up in is one of my favorites

Who am I supposed to be?
Tumblr media
pairing: will byers x mike wheeler
WC: 1.8k
warnings: vecna, mike being a little shit, gay panic
summary: Season 5. Will gets Vecna’ed in the final fight, but their walkman is busted. Mike has one final cry of hope to save him.
art credit: @daniartonline on instagram
“It’s not playing!” Mike yells, voice shrill and forceful. “Something isn’t working!”
“We’re running out of time here, guys-“ Lucas clings to the sword he’s wielding like it’s a lifeline. He cuts down another demedog, but not after Dustin hits it clean in the head with a bat. “They keep coming!”
“Where’s El? Where’s Eleven!” Mike’s face is red hot, emotion bubbling inside his cheeks. In front of him- eyes glassed over- is Will Byers, floating an inch off the ground. Mike bangs on the walkman, coughing as the debris from the upside down floats into his mouth and swirls around his throat.
“Come on you son of a bitch, play!”
A scream- purely guttural- echoes over the hills in the Upside Down. The gate crackles and shrills in response. Eleven hovers with her arms extended, blood gushing from her nose, in the distance. She’s holding it off- holding it off until they can wake Will up- and then they’ll be able to escape, and she can seal the gate for good. Except… Will won’t wake up. One of his blue vans lifts higher, but Mike drags the other back down by stepping on his foot hard, driving him back down to earth.
“Will- Stay with me!” Mike chokes on some fluid in his mouth- blood or spit, he isn’t sure. His black fluffy hair has been matted to his skull from the drying gash in his temple. The pain of it barely even registering. “Somebody help me! Somebody do something, Jesus Fuck!”
In the blue glow of the parallel world, Mike clings to Will’s forearms in desperation. Will, however, with red light beating down on him, is in a different place completely.
Vecna’s voice echoes in his mind. “They’ve left you,” He coos. Will’s tears have long since solidified in the congealed dirt that’s built up on his face, having been knocked on his hands and knees in some abandoned baseball arena. The warped stands shroud around him, empty of patrons but still deeply foreboding nonetheless. Will struggles to his feet, only to lose his footing and smack his chin on second base. He feels the hot sensation of blood escaping his body, and doesn’t dare to touch his chin to feel how deep it is.
“They’ve all left you, Will.”
“No, they’re looking for me.”
“You’re lost, Will. No one can find you- and no one is looking.” A form comes into view from the dugout. A cloudy, slimey, growing form that resembles a creature from a scary movie, but is too unfocused to make out the shape of. Will’s head spins as he pulls his hands across the field, trying to drag his body away from the creature. But he only gets closer. Will lets out a deep yell- mustering as much strength as he can and drags his body forward. All he has to do is survive. He managed to make it a week in the Upside Down at ten years old- He can survive a few moments in this place.
“Did you think if you stalled long enough, your mother would come and find you? Rescue you?” Vecna lulls, his voice sounding as if it must be directly behind Will’s head. “Or was it Mike- was it your paladin? The holy night. He’s moved on- He doesn’t care about you anymore, Will. You already know it’s true.”
It isn’t.
“Worthless- A wizard with no party.”
“Get out of my head!” Will yells, his voice breaking at the sheer force of his scream.
Mike jams the rewind button one last time on the Walkman and furiously presses play.
“It’s not gonna work, man!” Lucas shouts, the demedog on him and Dustin getting close. They’re fending it off, but only barely.
“I wish we had Eddie right about now-“ Dustin wacks the demedog in the leg, causing it to limp backwards. “Mike, come on, snap him out of it so we can get out of here!”
“I’m trying, I’m-“ His voice snags. “Will! Will, can you hear me?”
“Mike!” Will screams, wiping the spit and blood from his mouth. “MOM- Eleven, MIKE-!”
“They can’t hear you. No one is listening. It’s only you,” Vecna appears in his grotesque form in front of Will, his long Freddy Krueger hand lifting Will's face up by the chin. The sharp talon-like-nail pressing against the newly made gash and causing Will to yell out in pain. “…And me. At long last.”
“You were the first soul I claimed.” The monster waxed, lifting Will’s body into the air as he squirms and fights against it. “You were my first victim, my first connection from this world I was sent to into the one I used to call my home. You are the bridge between worlds. Eleven opened the gate, but you are the first traveler.” Will finds himself parallel to the dead, black, soulless eyes of his captor. With every ounce of strength in his body, he fights against the urge in his bones to go stiff. Every fiber inside his frame seems to will itself against him- his own body rejecting his control. He feels his fingers begin to crack- not yet break- but pull backwards against their natural track.
Mike watches as Will’s pinkie finger snaps backwards, and he yells. Lucas gets in the last blow, his leg bleeding after snagging a nasty bite from a demobat. “Mike,” He pleads. “Please, man, we can’t lose you too.”
“We haven’t lost him,” Mike breathes. “We, we….”
A scream of courage echoes over the cliffs. Eleven’s eyes streak red down her cheeks, and her hands tremble with force. A low growl that sounds like a wounded animal- but that Mike quickly realizes is the world itself- emanates around her.
The boys all halt in their tracks. Dustin drops his bat in disbelief. She isn't just closing the gate- she’s destroying the entire Upside Down.
The chaos of the battlefield all at once starts dissipating. The bats, gently, begin falling from the sky. Eleven screeches once again, and the very fabric of the universe feels as though it has begun to crumble. Chunks of rock and earth fall from the sky- the world she created, being destroyed by the hands that made it. And yet, while rage had birthed and begotten it, it was love and belonging that ripped it from the seams.
The remaining demogorgons collapse into the dirt and the mire. The Upside Down is silent.
As if on cue, the older kids come jogging into view from their positions in the fight. Steve runs to Dustin immediately, Eddie right behind him, and scoops the kid up in pure excitement.
“Henderson!”
“Steve-“ Eddie grabs Steve by the arm. His eyes are fixed on the two boys standing in the middle of the battlefield, dead demobats surrounding them in hideous piles. Steve’s face pales in realization. Nancy, who’s just come around the corner with Jonathan and Joyce, grabs their wrists in shock. Everyone is frozen. Except for Mike.
“Will, Will come on-“ He sobs, completely oblivious to the dead silence surrounding him. He paws at Will’s face, trying to wipe away the dirt, as if somehow it might help. “Will, come on you can hear me I know you can.”
Small. His voice is small. The onlookers, were they not adults who knew better, may have sworn left and right that in front of them was suddenly no longer a tall, lanky, grown-up Mike Wheeler that stood pleading with Will’s lifeless body- but instead was a tiny little ten year old, fresh out of his moms basement from a ten hour campaign. He sniffs, wiping the tears from his eyes with a snotty sleeve, his hands around Will’s shoulders. The walkman headphones sit uselessly against Will’s ears, and Mike pulls them off, flinging them down. He yells, anger bubbling out of him, and stomps on the walkman.
“Stupid, Stupid, Stupid, Fucking—!” His voice cracks again, and he holds Will tight, sobbing into his chest. Everyone else watches, their hearts breaking in front of them.
“Darling you’ve got to let me know,” Mike whispers, singing only ever so slightly. Off key. Pitchy. Quiet. Broken up by gentle sobs he can’t swallow. “Should I stay or should I go,”
Jonathan squeezes Nancy tighter.
“If I say that you are mine,” Mike cups Will’s face in his hands, his nose pressed against Will’s cheek. “I’ll be here…” -A hiccup- “…till the end of time.”
Mike’s eyes are swollen. Will’s are dead white.
“If you don’t want me set me free,” He squeezes Will’s hand tight. “Exactly who am I supposed to- supp- suh- exactly who am I supposed to be without you man? Come on please wake up wake up please I need you, I need you. don’t go, don’t—-“ he squeaks, swallowing hard and catching his breath. “If… if you go, there will be trouble. But if you stay it will be double.”
“So come on and let me know. Should I Stay or Should I Go?”
Joyce clasps a hand over her mouth.
Hopper pulls her into his chest.
Dustin shuts his eyes tight, and Steve holds his shoulders steady.
Lucas looks away. He knows this feeling.
Jonathan buries his face in Nancy’s hair.
Eleven watches in disbelief.
And then Will heaves a breath, and opens his big brown eyes.
Mike’s eyes widen with shocking hope. He holds his breath, then lets out a horribly ugly laugh. “Y- You-!”
“Hi,” Will coughs, his eyes dazed and confused but locked on Mike’s. They mimic his and well with big crocodile tears. “You have a really bad voice.”
Mike barks a laugh, grabbing Will by the face. “You little- You- You—“
“Yeah?” Will smiles, weak but gentle.
Oh, he’s not wasting another second.
Mike pulls their faces together, colliding in the silliest, most important kiss of either of their lives. Will laughs into it, shocked so much that the wind is knocked out of him. He inhales high into his chest, breathing in Mike’s kiss like it’s an anchor to life. And in more ways than one, it is. Will quickly takes charge, holding Mike's face in his hands, kissing him again, deep and full of emotion. The electricity in his fingertips is intoxicating. Pulling away too soon, Will pushes their foreheads together.
“I’ve waited my whole life to do that.” He whispers, breathing hard. His pupils are huge, dizzy with wonder.
“I can't believe I almost lost you before you did.” Mike laughs, tears still spilling over. He looks over to their audience, but specifically to El, who just smiles. Without missing a beat, she runs at them both, and throws her arms around them. Dustin and Lucas don’t waste another second- rushing at the three friends and almost tackling them to the floor in a mess of laughter and tears and chattering voices.
“Alright alright, let mom through.” Joyce smiles, her eyes puffy red and her face bright and smiling- if exhausted. Will’s eyes melt as she hugs him.
“Mom, I—“
“Oh hush. I already knew.” Giving him a gentle wink, and kissing the top of his head. “My boy. Please don’t ever go away like that again.”
Will’s eyes drift over to Mike as Joyce wraps him in a hug. “Don’t worry.” He smiles. “I think I’m planning on staying.”

My stardew ships:
Penny x Alex: classic nerd x jock but throw in the daddy issues on both sides. She'd get him to finally read those philosophy books too
Maru x Haley: they'd be the CUTEST lesbian couple ever. Maru would build Haley all those really cool, fancy, and fun mirrors.
Marnie x Marlon: she needs a man who will treat her RIGHT. FUCK LEWIS
Sebastian x Abigail: tbh I think they're cute together. Gamer and sword wife. They'd definitely move to zuzu city after getting married.
Emily x Wizard: you know she reads all that fantasy smut and she's eyeing that wizard.
Harvey x Shane: the cutscene where Harvey treats Shane just has gay tension (yes I know it's just him saving his life and pushing him to get help and doing everything he can to make sure he gets better but it's cute)
Leah x Elliot: they're the perfect couple
Me x Sam: I'm dating a real life version of Sam too so...

So, You Want to Write a Sword Fight.
Welcome to Your Local Sword Girlboy’s crash course on how to write a sword fight! We’re going to cover all the basics, from understanding context, to pacing, even some good ways to research! So buckle up gays, and let’s learn How to Sword.
First, what kind of sword are you wielding? There are so many different swords and forms and they’re all very different. But not only in the way you might think. Obviously the way the swords are held and wielded and the weight they have makes a difference how you write the battles, but even more so than that is TYPE OF FIGHT. Sabers, Epées, and Foils all have specific ways their bouts are set up and executed, and it has to do with a highly important cultural system of honor. Is this an honorable bout? Or a fight for survival? Or a fight for revenge? How much do these characters respect each other and how desperate are they?
This will affect the setup of the fight more than you think. For example, the target area. Or other weapons involved. If it is an honorable fight between two parties that respect each other, they will only hit on the front area of each others’ target, and will only make contact with their blades on each other. If it is a fight for survival, however, all bets are off. Any area on each others’ bodies is valid target area, and they might be more inventive while fighting, like slamming each other with the hilt, or using another improvised weapon nearby to win. It’s important to consider.
Now let’s talk about types of swords specifically. Sabers, Epées, and Foils are all incredibly light and whippy, and are held with one hand. They can be maneuvered very fast and can perform some very fast actions, and are GREAT for feinting (more on this later). They can change direction quickly with a whip of the fingers, and are usually used in very honorable bouts. Foils and Epées are for stabbing, while Sabers are for slashing opponents. All of these swords, though, use VERY small and quick movements. The fighter wielding one of these even makes themself smaller with a squatting stance and only one side facing the opponent. Everything is quick and precise. Footwork is key.
Rapiers and cutlasses are heavier, but still operated with one hand. These are favored by pirate types, and are used for slashing and sometimes stabbing. Another detail is that these can also be accompanied by a parrying dagger, held in the opposite hand as the Rapier and used for blocking the opponent’s blade out of the way.
Now the one you’ve been waiting for, longswords and broadswords (and lightsabers as well). These are usually two handed weapons, but can be one-or-two handed. They are heavier, and take more strength to control, but believe me when I say they are NOT clunky or slow. You CAN perform a feint with a longsword. I HAVE done it before (not successfully, but that’s just a skill issue on my part, let’s not dwell on it). The way these swords are maneuvered are with wider swings, for cutting OR slashing, and to protect the whole body. Footwork is important as well, but it’s terrible on the knees if you run too much with these (because they’re so goddamn heavy) so it’s not like you can run a marathon with a longsword like you can with a foil or saber. (of course if it’s a lightsaber all bets are off bc that thing is made of light and it's wielded by a space wizard so whatever).
Alright next. Let’s get GRANULAR. Let’s talk about very specific types of attacks and blocks and how to phrase this. Now, don’t worry, you don’t have to be a fencing expert to talk about the specific moves, because the audience will understand what you’re saying. It’s just about being specific enough to where you can paint a picture in their heads but not too specific to where the fight loses its suspense.
So, first, let’s talk about attacks and blocks, and what to call them. For any sword, extending the blade is holding it out in front of you. Thrusting is when you make a jabbing attack with the blade. And finally, lunging is when you throw your body forward with the attack, specifically throwing out your front leg and leaning into it, while keeping your body level with the floor to keep balance and make it easy to recover into a guard position.
Now for blocks. Pushing the blade out to block the opponent’s blade is called a parry. When you attack your opponent back immediately after taking their blade in a parry, it’s called a riposte. You don’t need to use this word, though, because I’ve found that just saying something like “They parried her blade and then thrusted towards her chest,” works quite well.
SIDE NOTE: if both of your opponents have the same pronoun set, I’m so fucking sorry. It doesn’t get any easier. It’s the Gay Fanfiction Dilemma, I’m afraid. But if you’re already versed in that, use the same workarounds for pronouns and titles for fighting as you do for fucking, it works pretty much the same way ;). (But PLEASE don’t be afraid to use their names. I promise nobody is going to kill you if you say the characters' names twice in a single paragraph. It’s MUCH better than having to read “the blond” or “the tall one” or “the younger woman.”) Basically, just use their names a lot. It’s quicker and I promise you it works.
Now where were we? Ah yes. Attacks and blocks. I already covered those, but surprise, there’s a secret third thing, and it’s my very favorite move. Feinting. It’s quite simple really, it’s an extension of the blade, a faked attack, to get your opponent to try to parry or block or move their blade, only to switch your movement to avoid their blade and attack them back. It’s fun and can be extremely effective, and it also can be used in many different types of ways. Any way you can get your opponent to try to parry your blade in one place, like a high or a low attack, expect where their blade is going to be, and then avoiding it works as a feint. Or you could engage the blade, and move it around with your own blade to get it away from your target area and slide in for a riposte. This is my specialty. And it makes a KILLER shiiiiiiing sound as well. It sounds confusing, but it can actually be written quite simply. Let’s give an example:
“A thrusted out their blade in a feint. But just as B’s blade leaped for it, A withdrew their arm and took B’s blade up in a quick engagement. They swung it around and metal scraped against metal as A pushed B’s blade away from pointing at their chest to a harmless position beside their thigh. Then, in the same flowing movement, blades still locked, A pushed their blade back up for a deadly thrust at B’s chest.”
Not bad, if I do say so myself. Although this comes from having executed that maneuver a hundred times personally. There’s still hope for you though, as a non-fencing sword writer, I promise! You just gotta research and read a bit. But more on that later.
Next let’s talk about footwork. It’s not the most important part of the fight, but it is worth mentioning every once in a while in your scene, just to give the audience a sense of space for where your characters are, especially if they’re in a precarious position like a mountain or a pirate ship. Remember that swordfighting requires a LOT of backwards and forwards movement on both parties’ parts, so give your characters lots of room!
That brings us to our next point. Pacing. Now, here’s something you NEED to know about real life sword fights. They are MUCH faster than you think they are. Most of the fight is pacing back and forth, trying to gain right of way (if you’re in foil), and testing your opponent to see where they’ll go. Just a few seconds of blade engagement, and then it’s back to pacing back and forth to see who’s going to jump first. Also some testing to see how trigger happy your opponent is but thrusting towards them and seeing if they’ll attack back or retreat. Basically, irl sword fights are just 70% foreplay and 20% actual stabby stab.
But this is not great for fun sword fight scenes! Remember it’s okay to stretch the truth, and focus on the swordplay actions, stretch them out as much as necessary. Especially if your characters are superhuman. Just consider throwing in a few moments of pacing and sussing each other out, I promise it’s worth it. Not just to break up the constant fighting, which can get tiresome, but also because characters get tired too! Superhuman or not, fighting is exhausting on all parties. It’s not unusual for two sword fighting individuals to suddenly break and have a moment of analysis, slowly circling each other. I promise it won’t break your tension, if anything it will just increase it.
Now let’s talk about how to ACTUALLY get better and writing these scenes. And no, I’m not going to say ‘practice.’ Because while practice is important, so is RESEARCH and OBSERVATION.
There’s many ways you can research and observe as a non-sword individual! First I recommend watching clips of actual sword fighting, specifically women’s olympic foil (because they have the most technique out of all the other swords and categories). Also, watching sword fighting scenes in movies is good. It’s a dramatized version, of course, but that’s exactly what we’re trying to achieve in writing. It’s good to watch the character’s perspectives as they fight, and how the action washes over us as an audience.
Finally, I recommend actually reading sword fights in stories. The best author for fantasy sword fights, hands down, is R.A. Salvatore. His books are super cool D&D fantasy quest stories centered around a badass but also cute and compelling Drow character who gets into sword fights ALL THE TIME. And nobody writes a sword fight like Salvatore. Reading his work has probably helped me more in writing sword fights than my actual knowledge of how to sword fight.
I hope this has helped somewhat! Or was just fun to read. Either way, I enjoyed writing it. I love writing sword fights and I love sword fighting and I love helping, so I was happy to make this. Also, I have lots more technical knowledge I would love to share on this subject, so if you have anything you want to know about how swords or sword fights work or how to write something, I’m open for asks! Even if I don’t know you! Feel free to reach out with a question or a comment, I’ll geek out about swords any day.
Anyway that’s it my writer friends and fellow sword enthusiasts, good luck and happy writing! <3

Daniel Watches She-Ra & The Princesses Of Power
-S1E1- 'The Sword Part 1'
Today's She-Ra Watch Art: This shitty Glimmer doodle.
Tumblr media
Look I promise they won't all be garbage ;-; I promise
Okay I wanna preface: Not every post is gonna be this detailed, I didn't even intend to go on this long with just one episode but I lost track of time. Some posts I'll be short & sweet. Some I'll be long winded to a comical degree. Depends on my feeling.
I think I'll just keep it to one paragraph per episode, & only pull out the long rambles when I finish a season. I think that'll work. Yeah.
Okay so I have no idea who any of these people are because I literally just started but one of these guys is a lizard. I'm a huge sucker for lizard people in anything ever so I immediately like this fucker. He's a lizard, that is all I need. He's just instantly cool because lizards are fucking rad as hell dude.
Tumblr media
So Cat-Ra speaks, that first fucking line of hers.
The fucking "Hey Adora"
Tumblr media
The first fucking thing I said to myself, out loud, was the immediate reaction I had to that line: "Oh so they're gay."
I don't know if it's like canon or not but one of the things I know about this show is people ship them a lot. I have no idea if that's actually like a canon thing in the show or not but I've seen a lot of fanart of them so I know people at the very least WANT them to kiss or hold hands or get married & buy a house in the suburbs & raise like 5 kids & watch Shrek on VHS & talk about doing their taxes or whatever idk.
That being an actual thing in the show itself? Uh I guess I'll see what happens so who the fuck knows man. Maybe they just explode idk.
But like....dude. DUDE. The fucking way Cat-Ra said it was just....
SO fucking extra like that immediately felt fruity to me. I'm already getting that vibe from her. On top of that, the way her & Adora continue to interact in the episode also give off a very distinct vibe, a rather, ahem, 'fruity' vibe. I think I'm already getting the idea of why this ship is popular. I do believe I see the vision.
Also, quick tangent, I LOVE the way the animators animated Cat-Ra like an actual cat. Her hair getting puffed up when she's agitated, her ears moving to reflect her mood. Her eyes dilating like how cat eyes actually do. THEY EVEN ALSO MADE HER PURR LIKE AN ACTUAL CAT, LIKE SHE AUDIBLY CAN BE HEARD PURRING. THAT'S SUCH AN ADORABLE DETAIL & IT MAKES HER IMMEDIATLEY ENDEARING AS FUCK.
Tumblr media
Also I guess it makes sense Cat-Ra would be into women, yeah?
Because it makes sense that CAT-Ra would be interested in PUSSY.
Tumblr media
(Please Laugh) (I'm desperate please think I'm funny I need this)
Now moving on, let me talk about this BITCH.
Tumblr media
One. Compared to the original Shadow Weaver, they sure did make her a way more intimidating villain.
Two. FUCK THIS BITCH??????
THE FUCK IS YOUR PROBLEM YOU FUCKING BITCHY, INKBLOT LOOKING, WACKY WAVING TUBE MAN HAIR HAVING, WIZARD-WANNABE MOTHERFUCKER? LITERALLY SHUT UP
+ NO ONE CARES & ALSO YOU SMELL BAD
+ YOU LOOK LIKE A BOOTLEG ERMAC
+ YOU'RE MEAN TO CAT-RA, I MEAN HONESTLY, WHO THE FUCK JUST BULLIES A CAT?
IMAGINE BULLYING A FUCKING CAT. FUCK THIS BITCH.
I DO NOT CARE FOR THIS WOMAN.
HER SMUG AURA MOCKS ME.
Hi so I immediately love you?? Like instantly my favorite character just from the design alone. Glimmer is so real honestly.
Tumblr media
I also like Bow, like, Bow is just so fucking cool & nice? He's such a real one, I wanna be best friends with him & hang out he's just so lovable like he's just awesome. I love this man immediately. He deserves all the good in the world actually.
Also holy shit the contrast between Bow in the original show vs this reboot design.
It's funny, the original design WAY more gay than the new one.
The new one that a lot of people (and by people I mean homophobic douchenozzles.) complained about, the design for Bow in this supposedly 'woke tumblr sjw cartoon' has a design that is far less homoerotic in it's design & feel.
The original Bow just outright looks like a fucking gay pornstar.
He's got the trademark 'Gay Porno Mustache™' & everything.
Tumblr media
Okay so there's a magic sword or something, etc.
They mentioned Eternia.
Okay so, one of the reasons the original she-ra was lame as fuck compared to He-Man? No Skeletor.
Hordak & literally all the villains in the original show suck ass.
They fucking suck. Hordak is just Skeletor but boring & shitty.
Why the FUCK did they not take the oppurtunity to replace Hordak with Skeletor? You don't even need to add He-Man, I'm fine with that.
But You could have just taken She-Ra & added a better villain because Skeletor fucking rules. He calls people boobs. That's fucking awesome & cool. WHERE IS HE? WHERE THE FUCK IS SKELETOR? LOOK SHOW. HORDAK WAS FUCKING LAME AS FUCK.
SO IF THIS REBOOT IS GOING TO CONVINCE ME THAT HORDAK IS IN ANY WAY A LEGITIMATELY COOL VILLAIN, THEN THEY BETTER FUCKING PULL OUT ALL THE STOPS BECAUSE IT'S GONNA TAKE A LOT TO CONVINCE ME THAT THEY WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN BETTER OFF JUST USING SKELETOR INSTEAD. LIKE, YOU BETTER FUCKING IMPRESS ME BECAUSE OTHERWISE, THE LACK OF SKELETOR IS GONNA BE A HUGE FLAW THAT YOU CANNOT OVERLOOK.
I mean, so far they managed to make me actually LIKE Cat-Ra, & the original Cat-Ra fucking sucks. Shadow Weaver sucked & so far at least this reboot Shadow Weaver is actually intimidating. But man, you better fuckin' impress me show, because the lack of Skeletor is felt deep within my soul.
OH wait hold on.
Tumblr media
Okay I see why everyone said this show is gay now.
Anyways I didn't mean to ramble on this long about the show in just one episode, I promise this is gonna be a rare occurrence. I think from now on, I'll keep it shortened to just one paragraph per post. I'll only pull out these long posts when I finish a season or something.
Tumblr media
Anyways uh:
-Glimmer is the best
-I'm sorry but I'm not over the skeletor thing WHY DID YOU NOT USE HIM HE WAS RIGHT THERE-
