The front door closed, signalling that Harry’s home.

“Hello, my gorgeous girl.” Harry didn’t say to you, but your black and white cat Circe.

You smiled to yourself as you heard Harry talk to Circe. As Harry greeted your cat, you took out the gingerbread men from the oven and placed them on the side.

The kitchen smelt amazing, full of Christmassy scents like cinnamon and ginger. It was sweet and comforting.

And soon as Harry walked into the kitchen, there was another level of comfort.

He stood in the doorway, holding his car keys and his water bottle, smiling at you. He had this soft smile that he only reserves for you. One that could melt away a thousand problems and make your world feel safe.

“Something smells good.” Harry said, watching the kitchen floor as Circe passed him by.

“I got bored. Decided to bake and voilà… Gingerbread men.”

“You’ve had a productive day then.”

“I actually did. I did the washing and—”

“Well you didn’t wash everything baby.” Harry gave a knowing smirk at the t-shirt you were wearing.

It was the t-shirt Harry’s been wearing to bed for the past week. You were going to add it to the wash, but it smelt of Harry and you missed him today, so wearing a piece of him sounded like a good idea.

“Oh yeah. I’m wearing your t-shirt if that’s okay.”

“More than okay.” He glazed his eyes over you, like he often does when he’s having an ‘i-love-y/n’ moment.

“Stop simping for me, you simp, and come and give me a proper hello.” You rolled your eyes at him.

Harry immediately walked over to you, chucking his keys and water bottle on the side. You patiently waited for him to walk over, arms crossed over your chest as you watched him.

He was slow with his movements, but the space wasn’t too far between you. He met you with a kiss on the forehead, wrapping his arms low around your waist so his hands could rest nicely at the bottom of your spine.

“That’s not a proper hello, mister.” You tutted, tilting your head up to look at his looming figure.

“I can’t disclose that information yet.”

You groaned in frustration, since that’s all he ever told you about his new album he was working on. You knew it was a gift from himself to the fans, as always, but you often wondered what his inspiration for the day was and how that was channelled into a song.

“You’re so annoying.” You pushed his chest so he stumbled away from you.

“I know, and yet you still love me.” Harry shrugged.

You turned back to your tray of gingerbread men. “Think he could love me better.” You turned around to Harry holding up a gingerbread man to him.

Harry instantly leaned forward and took a great, big, bite out of the gingerbread man’s head. You stood there in shock over his territorial move.

“H-harry!” You laughed his name. “Babe, what the hell?”

“Damn, that’s a good gingerbread man.” Harry wiped his lips with a cheeky grin.

“He’s not a man anymore, you dickhead. He’s a headless body...” You giggled in shock still.

“Would you still love me if I was a headless body?” Harry asked you, finishing off his mouthful.

This would seem like a really random and weird question to anyone else, but these were actually the types of conversations that you two had with each other.

“Yes, ‘cause I wouldn’t have to see your stupid face anymore.”

You threw the headless gingerbread man down on the tray in disbelief.

“Heyy.” Harry pouted.

“No. You’ve done the damage now, babe.” You pretended to be mad.

“This is unbelievable…” Harry mumbled, before stepping to cup your cheeks and pull your lips to his. You instantly responded by moving your lips in sync with his, getting a taste for the remanence of your gingerbread men.

Harry pulled away once he was satisfied that he had been forgiven.

PRESENTING THE REDESIGN OF THE GIRLBOSS QUEEN AMAYA 📢🗣🗣(I AM SO HAPPY TO HAVE FINISHED THE DRAWINGS)

It should be noted that this is a redesign for the Wish Au character written by @ animación , who helped me with the ideas and references for Amaya's design,@ animación it is very fun to collaborate with you :D

Now I will start to explain how we came to make this design:

-At first I didn't have many ideas for their design (the truth is before I was concentrating more on Aster and Asha) so I decided to watch the Whis movie to get a better idea of the aesthetic I wanted to look for them………yes, the movie is not that good, later I will talk about my opinion of the movie but in terms of design I was disappointed that out of so many possibilities for the design and costumes of royalty, Disney chose a neutral color palette with small details of blue color, I don't know, I feel like there were so many striking possibilities wasted for they desings.

-Well, continuing with the topic, the author of this Au Wish sent me references about what her vision was about the design of Amaya, which were mostly about the storyboards of the movie, I really liked the idea, since it gave me vibes of a threatening but elegant queen,she also sent me some concept art of Mother Gothel that I used as a reference for the structure of Amaya's face

This gave me the idea of also using Sephora that belongs to the movie "The Prince of Egypt" as a reference for the aesthetic that I more or less wanted for the character.

so first I decided to practice the structure of the face to familiarize myself with the design :D (I clarify that I traced the structure of the drawings here because it was just a practice, I used none of these sketches in the final result)

After a while I started making my own sketches when I finally understood how to draw the face

(For the hairstyle, I was guided by the photos that the author sent me, I almost forgot to put that😅)

-I also decided that instead of putting a crown on Amaya, I put a kind of headband with a jewel, because in addition to being comfortable, practical and cute (something that greatly characterizes Amaya's style)

It is also a parallel to my Asha design which has a diamond-shaped tattoo on her forehead.

-Now talking about Amaya's dress, yes or yes I wanted to design a cape with a hood, although at first I thought about adding a neckline to the top part of the dress, an idea came to me which was to be inspired by the Greek mythology character Circe, since curiously she is also a sorceress, I mentioned this to the author and she mentioned that at first when trying to draw her she was inspired by the conceptual art of Megara, who is also Greek, so in the end she decided that maybe the queen comes from from a town in Greece (Also this could have something to do with her backstory 👀)

-At some point in the story we discover that Amaya keeps different potions inside her dress (I guess for emergencies, I don't know), that's why I decided that the dress has a small opening, because in addition to making it easier for you to walk, it would also help you. get your potions out in an easier way (her potions are attached to a belt that would be on her leg or waist I suppose).

-In the end I designed these 3 prototypes and sent them to the author to help me decide which one to choose or which to combine because the truth is I couldn't choose alone (I'm too indecisive).As I said, I was inspired by the character of Circe, so I looked for references of how the Greek goddesses dressed in ancient paintings, and if you look a little closer you can notice that I added the Leo symbol, since it represents the lion. , an animal that was associated with the Greek mythology character I mentioned

Another important detail is the moons on her dress, since it represents motherhood, an aspect that Amaya uses as a facade with her people, and speaking of space, the writer gave me the idea that Magnifico represents the sun since in her own words:

"I know the association with the sun and the moon fits their personalities really well. As the sun can be seen as bright, fun and warm like Magnifico presents himself, but it can also be a force of destruction that burns and is unpredictable. And the moon can be associated with Amaya for being a protective glow in the darkness like how she presents herself as a caring guide, but the moon also has a mysterious dark side we can never see.And the moon only shines to us because the sun is shining on it, so like… Amaya only shines because she’s next to Magnifico"

(Honestly, I'm always surprised by how much symbolism the writer can find for the characters, I only put it in because of what I mentioned before and because I thought it looked cute lol).

(I came up with the belt and most of the costume thanks to this circe painting)

-Don't think that I decided on the colors yellow and dark blue just because they go together well, nonono, this one also has a meaning :D , you see, while I was looking at some of Wish's concept art there were these discarded designs of Magnifico:

And doing a little google search I found this:

-That's why I chose these colors, blue is a color that represents the truth, something that Amaya and Magnifico want to pretend, but the color yellow represents what they truly are, liars.

-And finally (because this writing is taking me more than 2 hours) the roses that are in her dress and hair are natural, and without giving you too many spoilers about the rewrite, Amaya suddenly ages a little, and when this happens the roses also have a change as they wither

What was zhao's character designing process like?

Hello! Thanks for asking, I'll try to keep this as simple as humanly possible-

-the beginning stages of Zhao's character

(Ignore the bad quality of the pictures, I was lazy-)

I've actually had Zhao for quite a few years now, but I think these drawings I made like 9 months ago are the oldest ones that I could find. As you can probably see, in the begging she was a primarily jttw OC, I remember being super into OSP (which I still am), so when I started watching their jttw series I immediately got to making an OC because I really liked the world and all.

There's not much to say about the design honestly. But I will say why the hair changed, back then, her hair was very tiger-y but why has it changed so much if she's still a tiger? Well it's because back then I actually really liked the hair, but as time went on I thought it was way too much. However I really got attached to the whole "Cursed for disobeying your family so that you can never forget about them when you look at your own face.", so I decided to keep the orange hair just remove the details.

However a lot of the drawings you will see still have the stripes, but you'll see how they became more and more simple over time.

(note: All of the drawings you will see of her old design are pretty old so my art skills have improved-)

When I just started watching lmk I already knew I wanted to change up her character a bit. So I did a mini re-design. Again not much to say about her design except that I wanted it to look very demon-y (because she actually used to be a tiger demoness)

However I felt she was too "soft", so I changed up her character a bit to be more cold and "mature", because I wanted her to have a bigger contrast in personality with Sun Wukong. I'll get into that later :>

And as you can see I was still experimenting with certain designs but in the end I ended up with the last one for a while.

Then something awoke in me and I was finally like: This hair is mad complicated let's simplify this sucker-

So some (a lot of) experimenting:

And with that I eventually got this kinda design:

As you can see, this is was the start of a ✨new era✨

And this design stuck for a while until I made a certain drawing for a certain @/camhues 👀

At this time I have started reading Circe and was very inspired by her character :0

She changed from being cold to more motherly. She's still mature but more clever, compassionate and caring. (yet still pathetic in my eyes). One of my friends here on tumblr @/doppel-doodles explained her PERFECTLY- "A fierce tigress in the body of a gentle mother cat" (like who gave them the right-), this explains her character very well because despite being very peaceful she's still a strong sorceress-

Now, Zhao is still kinda quiet and reserved considering her unhealthy past. But that ties a bit more into her connection with Wukong, which I'll get into in a bit.

I wanted Zhao to seem more "out of place", back then she just seemed like a basic bish girlboss OC and like someone who would make a good background character-

I also decided to give her a full name (because my dumb ahh realized Zhao is a Chinese SURNAME-) so I decided on Zhaoyan, also funfact Zhao's father used to call her "Zhaodi" because that name means "requesting a brother" (Because sexism yaaayyyyyy-)

My Zhao design is also heavily inspired by @/gigizetz Circe design, and her hair is very much inspired by Rapunzel from tangled-

And so yeah, then we got to her current design

While I can't really give anymore specific references, I can tell you a bit on how I settled on this design :D

Note: I wanted her to have a more exotic, tropical and ancient vibe if that makes sense. She is a spiritual maiden, sometimes even described as a sorceress, and considering the role I settled on giving her in the story it makes sense she would seem like "something new" or something out of the blue if you will. Even though she's a Peach Maiden, she doesn't exactly look like one, which I honestly think is really exiting to work with-

There's still some lore I haven't spilled yet that would say more about her design, but I hope to reveal that in the future!

Now, all the lore of her current character ties to one specific thing, aka her most important role in lmk- her connection to Monkey. Now as I mentioned, Zhao and Wukong were made to be opposites, or well to seem like opposites (one is chaotic and one is calm). Also the mear fact that the Chinese monkey zodiac and Chinese tiger zodiac are specifically referred to as not being able to get along so well.

But in reality they're quite similar, both get over looked because of their unthreatening personalities despite being really damn powerful. Both kinda stand out in physical appearance too compared to the other characters, and look alike in a way (same ginger hair and golden eyes). And not to mention they both push others away from them because of their pasts despite caring a lot.

A fun part about writing Zhao's character is she also serves as a way to find out more about Sun Wukong and jttw as a whole while still being her own character.

So yeah, that's basically it! Sorry for this being so fricking long I like rambling about my girl- (no I do not have a favorite lmk OC wdym?)

My name isn't changed across the board or anything but I chose my other name cuz I wanted something that felt like it represented what I wanna be. I like being a guide in a weird way, and there was something bout my name that just feels right now. I dunno, it's kinda weird cuz I still vibe with my first name too

Had to pull it up again so I didn't fuck up the title but "Baking A Cake With Your Incubus Boyfriend" for sure. I pretty much learned how to cook cuz someone else taught me and the audio reminds of one of my friends. Plus I crack myself up thinkin bout how badly another friend fucked up a cake this one time

I don't really fuck with Sam honestly? Don't really like Vincent either but that's more of a dislike kinda situation. Sam's real hard headed bout certain things and it's exhausting sometimes. He's not bad when he quits actin like he ain't holdin onto the same shit he scolds other people for, but as a whole I don't see what other people do in him

Sat next to a friend reading Circe out loud and then borrowed it from them the next day. They let me keep it after I asked to re-read it for the 5th time

If I had to pick? Vega or Brachium. Both of them remind me a lot of a old friend of mine so I fuck with most of their audios. I think they'd be cool to kick it with if they didn't have a bunch of plot shit goin on

Hmmm, Type Twos are characterized as a giving, open- hearted sort of people, leaning towards those who are similarly inclined. With that in mind, I’d pick Camelopardalis for you.

Another reason I like him for you is because of what you said about sleep. Sleeping in the presence of another person is so vulnerable and trusting so I wanted to pair you with the most trustworthy Redacted man I could think of. Also, I think Cam would be the most appreciative of the trust and love that that gesture would wordlessly express, you know? Also, I like what you said about “being a guide”; like, I feel Cam would hear that and resonate with that.

Overall, you’d have such a peaceful, serene life, and I love that for y’all. Cam would be so well fed in more ways than one, because I can see him being such a supportive, helpful sous chef once he gets the idea. I can clearly imagine you introducing him to cooking and disco, music playing while he watches you dance around the kitchen while also watching whatever’s in the pot on the stove. (I’m so sure the daemon powers and speed will be so helpful in the kitchen.) (Also, I think he was totally old enough to be around for disco, but he was more of a classical/jazz guy. This would make it even more fun to show him the genre he missed.)

Like I said, Cam’s a classics and jazz kind of guy in my head. I think he’d have a wonderful time showing you the music he likes, the kind that brings him serenity. I'm so happy to hear that she looks motherly! It means that me looking at all the female characters from Prince of Egypt worked!

I do like femme fatale archetypes, and Circe is kind of the prototype of it. But at the same time, I'm so tired of it. So why not try to highlight more of her "mama bear" side? >:)

definitely no trouble - that’s what this blog is for! don’t be shy - make your requests!

this is circe.

Circe was the daughter of Helios (Titan of the sun) and Perse (an oceanid). If you have read The Odyssey by Homer, you know that she is casted in a villainous light for turning Odysseus’s crew into pigs. But really it’s their faults - Odysseus and company arrived on a desolate island, in doing so they looked around. When they discovered Circe’s house they invited themselves in (aw yes because that’s not rude - always announce when you are coming over). Eurylochus, Odysseus’s brother-in-law, sensed danger even after hearing her singing in the kitchen (no it wasn’t bad it was just eerie vibes). So he stays outside, while everyone waited indoors to eventually be received by the hostess (not that she knew they were coming *eye roll*). She offered them wine and when they began to drink, she pulled out her wand and turned her guests into pigs (minus Eurylochus, who is outside, and Odysseus, who stayed on the boat). She locked them all away in a sty. Eurylochus ran to Odysseus relaying what happened - at this, Odysseus decided to confront Circe. On the way to Circe’s, Odysseus received divine intervention - Hermes gave him a plant called moly (no relation lol) explaining this plant makes people immune to Circe’s magic. When Circe discovered that her magic had no effect on Odysseus, she saw him as brave and did as he requested (turned his crew into men again). Circe was in awe over him and pledged her devotion and love to him. As a result, Odysseus and company stayed on the island for a little over a year - Circe had three of Odysseus’s children but Odysseus went home to his mortal wife, Penelope. It was Circe and Odysseus youngest that accidentally killed Odysseus with a poisonous spear given to him by his mother. IN MY OPINION Circe in a chart can represent a) vengeful lovers, b) where/how people take you for granted, c) how manipulative or convincing you are, d) the area in life you tend to manipulate others, and/or e) magic or occult talent (my circe is in the 8h conjunct sun, moon, and mercury - makes sense why i am here writing (it’s also conjunct my qwerty asteroid) about asteroid astrology lol).

i encourage you to look into the aspects of circe along with the sign, degree, and house placement. for the more advanced astrologers, take a look at the persona chart of circe AND/OR add the other characters involved to see how they support or impede circe!

I went into 2022 with the realization that I hadn’t read a single book all of last year. Now, I’ve never been a particularly voracious reader, but I’d like to think I’m capable of more than none book per annum. But the pandemic funk do be pandemic funkin’ like that.

Anyway, I set a goal to read 10 books this year, equating to just under a book a month. Well, it’s the last day of December and I just finished my 40th.

Here are some highlights:

Most Intimidating: The Priory of the Orange Tree, by Samantha Shannon. At 800-some pages, this standalone fantasy was a beefy boy. That said, it was so good and comfortably one of my top 5 reads this year.

Stuck With Me: The Shadow of the Gods/Hunger of the Gods. It’s an unfinished planned trilogy, but it was nonstop action. It gave big Skyrim vibes without the commitment (and grind) that comes with Skyrim.

Made Me Feel Ways About Stuff: The Parable of the Sower, by Octavia E Butler. This dystopian story felt like the events that could have happened before we got to The Handmaid’s Tale. It’s just scary how plausible that societal slip into chaos could seem.

BookTok Made Me Do It: A Court of Thorns and Roses series, Throne of Glass series and Crescent City series, by Sarah J Maas. Ah. My unwitting foray into the fantasy romance genre. With a few exceptions, they’re entertaining enough, but they’re extremely mid.

Did Not Finish: The Fifth Season, by NK Jemisin. I’d just wrapped up a series and wasn’t in the headspace to start a new one. That said, it’s definitely on my To Be Read pile for next year.

Good Vibes: Remarkably Bright Creatures, by Shelby Van Pelt. Was it predictable? Yes. But it was an incredibly satisfying story nonetheless. And now I want a Giant Pacific Octopus friend, too.

I hope the New Year is treating you well :D Just as a heads up—this ask contains a question about sexual assault as it pertains to the Corinthian in Wings, so if you do answer, please feel free to do so in whatever way you’re most comfortable with, for yourself and for your blog! Also so sorry tumblr is making me split this into several parts, cries T_T

Okay question! A friend and I were talking about Wings yesterday over shaved ice and we both thought that the Corinthian’s role was perhaps a Circe parallel? Or maybe a Calypso parallel, since her and Odysseus’s interactions in the epic can also be interpreted as sexual assault (re: Odysseus’s entrapment on her island, and only being able to leave until Hermes (Dream?) comes to free him/let him know he’s free to leave). (2/4)

I was also trying to fit Eleanor’s role in there somewhere, perhaps as Nausicaa? Eleanor/Hob’s first meeting gave me similar vibes as Odysseus/Nausicaa’s, with both Hob and Odysseus kinda popping up outta nowhere and their appearances being very distinctive (although Hob, thankfully, was not naked LMAO I think that would’ve been a bit much for poor Eleanor XD). All of this, of course, assuming Hob is playing Odysseus’s role at these points, which I know often switches in Wings (and quite brilliantly!) But anyway, would love to hear your thoughts on this, if any! :3 Thanks so much again for sharing this delight of a story <3 (4/4)

Hello friend! I've just copied over all your asks so that I don't bombard you all with them one at a time <3 No need to apologize!

So first thing's first is that the notion that my fic is being discussed between multiple people in meatspace over tasty frozen treats is THE most tickling and wonderful thing I have heard this week, I am enamored, I love it and I am SO grateful that Wings has generated enough interest in the meta of it to be DISCUSSED <3

So the Corinthian is, first and foremost, a parallel to Polyphemus! To a slightly lesser extent he is also a reference to all the times that yeah, Odysseus ends up trapped on an island because of the ~wiles~ of a sorceress/nymph/whatever, but there's an absolutely wonderful line in the A.T. Murray translation of The Odyssey which is "For he was fashioned a wondrous monster, and was not like a man that lives by bread, but like a wooded peak of lofty mountains, which stands out to view alone, apart from the rest." Polyphemus is the monstrous son of Poseidon, so we already have the parallel there between Corinthian and Dream, created/creator, but the primary reason that I mapped Corinthian to Polyphemus is because of hunger. Polyphemus is a glutton and possessed of monstrous hunger, devouring 6 of Odysseus' men and blatantly flouting the concept of guest-rights, and it's his hunger (and his thirst) that Odysseus understands and which allows him to trick Polyphemus into drinking too much wine. I think there's an excellent parallel between the hunger that Hob Gadling has for living, and the hunger that the Corinthian has for the EXPERIENCE of life. He doesn't want all of the mess and the sorrow and the actual humanity, he just wants the parts that ping his adrenaline and his oxytocin. That's why, when Hob tells him that he's HUMAN, and the Corinthian can't take that away from him, Corinthian is so upset. Because Polyphemus will never be a god, even though he says "For the Cyclopes reck not of Zeus, who bears the aegis, nor of the blessed gods, since verily we are better far than they" (saying basically that the Cyclopes don't pay attention to the gods because they're BETTER than gods), and in the same way Corinthian will never be HUMAN, even though he tries to wear all these trappings of humanity.

I think you can definitely make the argument for clearer parallels between Corinthian and Circe, because Circe DOES, in the end, tech Odysseus something valuable, in much the same way that Hob learns something valuable (that he's human! and no one can change that!) during his time on Depression Island. And there is that aspect of sexual violence, which I think is a lot more sinisterly-portrayed with Circe than it is with Calypso, probably because Circe is you know a powerful sorceress possessed of her own agency etc etc.

As for Eleanor, you're absolutely right! When I wrote out my notes for the story, at the very beginning ("notes," I say, as if it wasn't just chapter titles and quotes from the Odyssey that felt like they resonated, lol), I had originally mapped Eleanor to the sirens, on the grounds that she was drawing him into a dream that could never be real to him. But that eventually felt disingenuous, because Hob VERY much loved Eleanor, canonically, and even in this fic he loved her desperately. Nausicaa is the only female character that Odysseus acknowledges as being deserving of a fine husband, and you could argue that she's something of the "one who got away" for him. If he weren't consumed by his quest, he very well might have stayed with her. "Far off we dwell in the surging sea, the furthermost of men, and no other mortals have dealings with us." is the quote that I pulled the chapter title from, and I think that Eleanor still managed to represent something that was holding Hob in stasis, and that it wasn't tenable, but like...it also wasn't bad? The Phaeacians are SOFT, gentle, hedonistic, removed from the troubles of the world, and I feel like Hob at that point was so desperate to try and hold on to himself as a 'living' person that he was willing to try and remove himself from the narrative that way, for a time. It didn't work, of course, because he he didn't have enough information about the structure of the story at that point to truly defy it, but he TRIED.

And lastly, it's worth saying that I don't know if there's a single point in story where Hob or Dream are inhabiting only ONE character at a time. The tropes that make up the characters take turns at the forefront, but at the end, Dream is as much in his own odyssey as Hob is. Hob is the same obstacle to his own self-realization as Poseidon is to Odysseus. All these facets exist within the same gem, just depending on how you turn it towards the light. :3

death by flies. the thought of being picked apart into nothing is so deathmetal. i've always been partial to some body horror, i never kill my sims off though <3

alpha all the way! i like to incorporate some maxis-match, but i just can't really vibe with the plastic-y aesthetic of ts4.

absolutely not! i wish more of my sims were fat, actually. i love different bodyshapes (and it's the one thing that annoys me about ts2).

sims 3 showtime! i got it before getting the base game because i didn't know you needed the base game. i remember watching quxxn and falling in love with it. still my fave expansion (yes i know it's shit)

i simply don't <3. i mentally called it play mode and never realised this debate was even a thing lmao. but i'd say it like LIVing if i gave a fuck.

tbh i've never felt connected to any sim i've made. i made a legacy save in ts3 that got lost to corruption and just struggled to form connections to my sims ever since (there's something to unpack there). premades are safe because i know the game won't swallow them whole i guess.

nope! i just don't think it'd fit. my ex-gf used to make me in the sims 4 and pose us together! she's probably drowning me in pools now though.

I Kissed Shara Wheeler by Casey McQuiston ➡️ YA novel about a girl who gets kissed by her rival at prom, who then disappears. it sucked me in and i read it in two days

Loveless by Alice Oseman ➡️ college girl discovers that she’s aroace as sapphic chaos explodes in the background. again, the aroace rep is really good

The Black Flamingo by Dean Atta ➡️ verse story about a mixed race, queer teen who finds a community in doing drag at his university. the coming out poem in the back made me cry when someone sent it to me without context

Cosmoknights by Hannah Templer ➡️ graphic novel about space gays who want to take down the patriarchy. I’ve only read the first volume (the second one is being released chapter by chapter online and I haven’t been vibing with that style lately) but it is GOOD

Sabriel by Garth Nix ➡️ high fantasy about a girl going into the dangerous, magical Old Kingdom to saved her father from the realm of Death. some seriously inventive, well-written worldbuilding and definitely my favorite depiction of death/necromancy. remarkably progressive gender-wise considering it came out 25 years ago

Circe by Madeline Miller ➡️ story of Circe’s life. crosses paths with multiple big greek mythology figures and there are several tsoa references. MM seems to have taken more creative liberty with this one and some of it I’m not a fan of but overall a good book

i will probably have more to add to the queer fantasy section of this once I’ve read more of my tbr. please please read circe if you read and loved tsoa

Some Pre-Rebirth Zatanna & Wonder Woman Team Ups

One of these days DC has got to give us a Zatanna and WW OGN in the same vein as ‘Black Canary/Zatanna: Bloodspell’.

Zatanna and Wonder Woman’s partnership has to be one of the best things to come out of DC’s Rebirth era and one of these days I would love to see a deep dive of their history building on elements established in canon. My mind went buzzing when I first saw them together on the cover of JLD Vol 2. They are both powerful in different ways and they compliment each other so well.One is a warrior and diplomat while the other is a performer and a sorcerer. One was raised by a single mom, the other was raised by a single dad, Diana’s theme is truth and and Zatanna’s theme is around misdirection. Diana fights with her fists and lasso while Zatanna fights with her words and creativity.

So here is a list of their most notable interactions and team ups before Rebirth happened.

0. Earliest Interactions

Before Zatanna joined the League, she was part of a three way crossover between the JL, JSA and the Golden Age superhero team the Seven Soldiers of Victory in which the League and JSA split into various groups to rescue the time displaced Seven Soldiers. Zatanna, Barry Allen and Red Tornado had to defeat Circe in order to rescue Roy Harper. It’s unclear whether this is the same Circe that appears in WW comics but it’s not OOC for that version either.

The only interaction we got between them in the arc was in JLA #100 when Zatanna, Wonder Woman and Black Canary cut this cake together:

Zatanna joined the League for real in JLA #161 after initially turning it down in the same issue. It’s pointed out in the same issue that WW advocating for more female members is part of what lead to the League voting for her to join.

Diana was part of the story arc where the League went to rescue Zatanna’s mother Sindella. The mission ended in tragedy with Sindella’s death. Diana and the rest of the League are shocked at the outcome.

In JLA #166, Diana is the one who delivers the commentary on Sindella’s death which also functions as a eulogy and is the one holding and comforting Zatanna after the funeral:

One gets a big sister vibe from the way Diana treats her.

And calls her a strong woman in the same issue:

Zatanna’s primary interactions in the League were with Ralph Dibny, Barry Allen and Ray Palmer but there was definitely a bond between her and the other female League members. Zatanna’s main character flaw when she joined the League was her need to prove herself and the high standards which she sets for herself that sometimes blinds her to her capabilities and gave her a tendency to overwork herself. Something the other female Leaguers were aware of and would sometimes give her a reality check:

If there ever was a Black Canary/Zatanna: Bloodspell style comic I would like to see scenes like this expanded upon, give us a behind the scenes look at the League, so to speak. Like more scenes of Diana helping Zee grieve her mom’s death or help her deal with her need to prove herself.

1 . JLA #200

This issue was a retelling of how the JLA was formed. In this version, the League came together to fight the elemental themed alien warriors known as the Appellaxians. The seven founding members defeated the aliens and each hid their remains where it could not be found. However, the aliens had planted a post hypnotic suggestion in the original League member’s minds and years later, the founding members were being mind controlled into gathering the remains of the Appellaxians in order to resurrect them. Thus it was up to the new members to stop the founders.

Red Tornado took on Aquaman, Atom fought Green Lantern and Zatanna fought Wonder Woman on Themyscira. This being the 200th issue of JL, a cavalcade of artists worked on the issue each depicting a different confrontation based on the script written by Gerry Conway. Zatanna and Wonder Woman’s confrontation was depicted by Dick Giordano.

Under ordinary circumstances, Zatanna might have won but this was after she was depowered in JLA #191, thus during this period she could only manipulate the elements, sort of like the Avatar. The more ruthless mind controlled Diana managed to beat her easily:

Almost killed her? Wow. Also interesting that the Amazon mentioned that Zatanna healed very quickly thanks to the Purple Healing Ray. Is it because she is a Homo Magi that the ray is more potent on her?

Anyway, no hard feelings between the two after the founding members were freed from mind control:

And later Zatanna was seen riding on WW’s invisible plane to the final battle.

But these are small moments during ensemble stories, what about stories where the two of them are in the spotlight? Well, thankfully their interactions have only gotten more significant over the years.

2. JLA #202

This was a bonkers issue written by Gerry Conway with art by Don Heck in which Wonder Woman, Zatanna, Hawkman, Atom and Red Tornado go into space to search for Batman whose gone missing after an accident during a routine mission to repair the JL satellites hull.

By the time they find him he's been turned into this:

Ah, yes the pre Bat God days when writers had trouble figuring out how to fit Batman on the League.

From what I've heard, JLA often got criticized by WW fans for not giving Diana a more active role (the more things change....) and this issue seems to be an attempt to rectify that as it gives Diana a more active role plus lots of moments between her and Zatanna.

Like this gem of a moment where Zatanna freaks out about accidentally hurting WW while trying to repair the Watchtower’s hull:

(If my female friends had super powers they would probably react exactly like this.)

“Oh no! My friend is upset, I have to reassure her by punching through this steel beam to show that I am okay!”

And more moments of them being very protective of each other:

Thankfully, Batman was returned to normal at the end of the issue completely unaware that he had been turned into an alien furry. It makes you wonder if there is an in joke among the JL about the time Batman got turned into a furry space werewolf especially during periods where Bruce is being dickish.

In JLA #206 Diana is the one who announces and congratulations Zatanna when she is elected League chairperson:

But their interactions weren’t limited to just the JL title either:

3. Wonder Woman #291-293

Zatanna and WW teamed up as part of a crossover called 'Judgement in Infinity' in which a powerful cosmic being called the Adjudicator arrives to judge the earths worthiness to survive. Unsure of this world, he then sends his 4 Horsemen to test, not just the primary Earth 1 but also Earth 2, Earth X and Earth I.

Zee gets air sick on the Invisible Plane but not on a magic carpet? Cue the song ‘A Whole New World’ but instead of dazzling places you’re going to the poorest, most miserable part of India where you are on borrowed time fighting a creepy cosmic entity and their henchmen that’s making the suffering worse.

So,Zatanna and Wonder Woman teamed up to fight one of the Horseman; the manifestation of Famine in Calcutta, India.

Meanwhile, Black Canary, Huntress/Helena Wayne and Power Girl/Karen Star took on another Horseman, this time the Plague on Earth 2, Madame Xanadu, Supergirl and the Phantom Lady of Earth X took on War on Earth X while Donna Troy, Starfire and Raven took on Death.

Then all the other heroines are pulled from their respective earths and on the Adjudicators ship where they (primarily Diana) had to face off against this immensely powerful being with the hard to pronounce name:

It’s a cool cross over. A little dated but I would love to see the Adjudicator revisited again. Plus it gave us some great moments with Zatanna and Wonder Woman teaming up (not to mention some cool unexpected combinations like Madame Xanadu and Supergirl), and not just those two but also some great moments between Diana and Donna as well: :

4. The Brave & The Bold #33

Wonder Woman, Zatanna and Batgirl go on a night out. But is everything the way it seems?

This is this comic where we learn at the end that Zatanna had a premonition that Babs would be shot and end up in a wheelchair so she wants to give Babs a good time before it happens.

This was around the time where DC’s time traveling rules, as defined in Booster Gold’s title was that you can’t change the past at all otherwise something worse will happen or the event that you’re trying to prevent will happen anyway.

To be fair to Zatanna, she says she doesn’t when or how it will happen, just that it will and she also says that she’s bad at premonitions (which is not unique to just this story) and the issue also has WW talking about the oracles of Greek myth and how sometimes nobody believed those oracles. Likely planting the idea of the Oracle persona in Babs mind.

On a lighter note we got some great interactions between these three heroines accompanied by gorgeous Cliff Chiang art who manages to imbue an individual sense of personality for each heroine with just his drawings alone even on pages where they are no speech bubbles. The story was written by JMS.

There is also this scene where Diana comforts Zatanna and Babs thinks there is something going on between the two:

Zatanna’s characterization here feels like a grown up version of her DCSHG counter part. Even though the comic predates the show, it does feel like you are reading a mature version of the characters from the show . I’ve only seen clips of the show but maybe it’s depiction of Zatanna is more accurate than I thought.

5. JLA #115-119

(Not to be confused with ‘Justice League of America’, the abbreviated JLA (1997) title is a separate thing from the previous JLoA Vol 1 (1960) title)

Anyway, this story arc was part of the ‘Crisis of Conscious’ story line written by Geoff Johns and Allan Heinberg with art by Chris Batista in which the Justice League dealt with the fallout of Identity Crisis in which it was revealed that long ago, the League mind wiped Dr Light after the latter raped Sue Dibny, with Zatanna being the one to carry out the mind wipe. Turns out, they didn’t just mind wipe the Light, they went on to mind wipe other villains too, specifically the Secret Society of Villains. They also mind wiped Batman after he stumbled upon them trying to mind wipe Dr Light the first time. A memory which has only recently restored causing a rift between Batman and the League members and between Batman and Zatanna.

I wasn’t a fan of this story arc, mind wiping is OOC for Zatanna and it tainted for a long time until Morrisons’ Seven Soldiers and Dini’s ‘Tec run. It also pushed her into a morally grey area whereas before she was firmly on the principled good guy side.

So anyway, the villains who were mind wiped by Zatanna have regained their memories of the heroes secret identities and have begun targeting the heroes loved ones. So Hawkman wants to mind wipe them again. However Zatanna is extremely reluctant to do it again so she goes to Diana for advice (at the time, Diana was self exiled to Themyscira for killing Maxwell Lord):

After which, she returns to Man’s World, single-handedly takes down Despero who was taking on the whole League and had gotten several League members under his mind control. Then she makes the Secret Society forget the hero’s secret identities after apologizing for the initial mind wipe.

While the interaction between WW and Zee was great and I like the fact that it’s Diana advising her but also allowing her to make her own choice, the story loses points for trying to retcon Catwoman’s character development in her own title as being a result of Zatanna mind wiping her. And while you could brush off mind wiping Dr Light as a one off thing, having her and the League go off and mind wipe a bunch of other villains puts a huge stain on her character, even though she wasn’t the sole one responsible, she still got most of the blame for it. It also makes her seem like a morally gray character who cannot use her power wisely as opposed to her previous characterization of being someone more principled when it came to using her abilities.

6. Wonder Woman Agent of Peace #15

Finally! A fun one off with just the two of them that’s not part of a cross over or an angsty story arc.

The comic also has some great art, fun interactions between the two characters and they are both in character and true to their classic selves throughout the whole thing.

The story involves Wonder Woman visiting Las Vegas to get Zatanna’s help in dealing with Devastation who is on her way there. WW is all about the mission but Zatanna is a little too inattentive to hear what Diana has to say. This leads to a bit of misunderstanding with the two. But later, they work together to fight Devastation:

“Light of the city” huh?

And at the end of the story, they make up:

This was a fun one in done issue with the characters being their classic selves that I wish we got more of these days.

I have marinated myself in this album for nearly a full week and what a week it has been. I think this album is kind of flawless. Like Mahalia on Closer, 'We've got dynamite in our DNA' in 'All Day'? The beautiful tones of Kim Sawol in 'Forg_tful'? How did I exist before this record? I have no idea.

Anyway these are some books that make me think of these songs.

Yun (with Erykah Badu) - I thought about this alot, and I was trying to think of a way to explain humans in a book, and maybe a book that is a combination of art, philosophy and humans, is 'The Unbearable Lightness Of Being' by Milan Kundera. It's not a book for everyone, but it does combine elements of Psychology and Philosophy and certainly reflects on being human. RM has also read it apparently, so maybe there's something to this.

Still Life (with Anderson Paak) - One of the biggest bops on this record with a great video I might add, I consider this song the antithesis of 'Black Swan' here the artist is very much coming back and revelling in the stillness and to keep on moving onwards. I think a good suggestion here is 'I Want To Die, but I Want To Eat Tteokpokki' by Baek Se-Hee. A book about a woman talking to her therapist, I think it's very much about breaking out your own mould.

All Day (With Tablo) - I love this song so much. A song about the world, and politics and standing up when they say behave, this song is definitely one of my favourites on this album. If you want a perspective on the political history of South Korea, I would recommend Han Kang's Human Acts. Based on the events of the Gwangju Uprising, which both J-Hope and Suga have referenced in songs before, this book is not light, but it is incredible and defined by the people who stood.

Forg_tful (with Kim Sawol) - Her voice is so pretty on this song, it's a beautiful listen. This song is about nature and sometimes the fleeting nature of existence, and maybe that's why I was thinking of 'The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue' by V. E. Schwab. The story of a girl whose existence is forgotten in a day, it gave me vibes. This one was so difficult to think of, but I feel like it has the elements.

Closer (with Honne, Mahalia and Paul Blanco) - You know I was thinking about this so long, it actually hurt my head, but I remembered this book by David Levithan called Everyday I liked and it kinda me think huh. About a boy a wakes up in the body of someone new everyday until he ends up at Justin, and meets his girlfriend, it's a weird one, but I think a really good one and you can't be more under the skin can you?

Change Pt 2 - Go off Namjoon, I guess. I respect this song so much in that it's honest, it's confrontational and he recorded it drunk, and it makes for an added emotion to it, especially those last lines. If this song is about becoming what you truly were meant to be, I was thinking of Circe by Madeleine Miller. The story of a witch sent to an island as punishment and what happens to her and how she takes control of her life after having none is incredible, and I think if you have read both, you'd get it.

Lonely - I can't imagine how it must feel to be feel so lonely in a city coloured purple in your honour, that must be heartbreaking for someone to deal with, hence how we got this song. A song about just wanting to go home, maybe a good story about someone who is just trying to do that is 'The Odyssey' by Homer. The story of Odysseus (self-fulfilling prophecy much?) whose trying to get home after the Trojan War, Namjoon is a modern day Odysseus, does he have to deal with a witch, Hydra and Cyclops? No, but he does have the world on his shoulders.

Hectic (with Colde) - A song about a hectic life and not being able to see the good and smooth compared to the rough, I was thinking about days that were important to have all the time you need, and maybe a good example of this is 'They Both Die At The End' by Adam Silvera. The story of two boys who realise they only have one day left to live, I can imagine this song might be quite relevant to them on their last day.

Wildflower (with Youjeen) - The first glimpse of the album we had, Wildflower is about staying rooted but keeping yourself moving and living for yourself and you know what go this man for letting themselves be compared to flowers. What I think is a great recommendation for this song is Wild by Cheryl Strayed, the story of a woman who goes on a road trip after divorce, and wander 11000 miles discovering herself along the way and isn't that very wildflower? In my opinion yes.

No. 2 (with Park Jiyoon) - I thought about this alot, and I know the recording at the end was recorded secretly as they walked through a park, I believe and then they sampled it in so taking in nature and moving forward. One of my favourite quotes is:

“Oh, to be alive in such an age, when miracles are everywhere, and every inch of common air throbs a tremendous prophecy, of greater marvels yet to be.”

from Walt Whitman, and when I hear this song it kinda reminds me of someone finding their wonder again. So I think a good suggestion might be Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman. Because if anything this album is, it's a collection of songs of himself, but also it expresses the cyclical nature of life. If anything Indigo is, it's an exploration, of nature, humanity and being who you are, there is no better poetry collection that defines that.
