Silent Night, Deadly Night! - In the early 1970s, late creators Dennis O’Neil and Neal Adams brought the Dark Knight back to his Gothic roots originally planted by Batman co-creators Bill Finger and Bob Kane. After Mike Friedrich's "The Silent Night of the Batman", the holiday adventures of the Caped Crusader still rolled on, even during this transformative period. Another memorable Batman holiday tale is "Silent Night, Deadly Night".
Published in February 1972’s Batman #239 and illustrated by Irv Novick and Giordano, as Batman tracks down a robber stealing from street corner Santa Clauses, he discovers the man, named Tim, is a laid off factory worker stealing to buy medicine for his ill niece. While Batman sympathizes, he tells Tim he broke the law and should face the consequences. Somehow Tim gets the upper hand on the Batman, knocks him out and goes to seek revenge on his boss that laid him off. This leads to Batman waking up in Tim’s apartment to his sick niece. The two of them go to find her uncle but as they walk to the Batmoblile, they are caught in a snow storm. The Caped Crusader carries the young girl through the sleet and snow and then of course find and abandoned horse and sleigh to ride so they can stop Tim before he does anything he regrets. In the end, to the Batman’s surprise, Tim has reconciled with his former boss and everyone, from the sick little girl to vengeful Tim, is helped and able to have a Merry Christmas. The Dark Knight may have returned to its vigilante nature in the Bronze Age, but we see the Caped Crusader enchanted t bright lights, Santa, and sleigh bells in the Christmas issues.

Are there any books you'd add to this list?  I would include Grant Morrison's "Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on a Serious Earth" to this list.  Dave McKean's art and Gasper Saladino's lettering are a masterclass of graphic art.

“Batman 101: From A to Z” - A is for “Arkham Asylum”: An insane asylum on its own is a nightmare and Arkham is the epitome. Up until the late 1980s, Arkham Asylum was seen as a place to send the clinically and criminally insane. But the walls didn’t exhale the madness it truly inhaled until Grant Morrison wrote his 1989 graphic novel “Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth” illustrated by Dave McKean and Gasper Saladino. Beginning with a flashback to Amadeus Arkham renovating his home into an asylum after the death of his mother Elizabeth, the current time is April 1st. Commissioner Gordon tells Batman Arkham Asylum has been taken over by Joker and they have staff as hostages. As Batman enters, he sees Two-Face, driven further into insanity due to his coin traded in with a 6-sided die thanks to his psychiatrist. Calling back to the underground corridors in the real Danvers Insane Asylum in Massachusetts, Batman has one hour to complete this maze of terrors. Along the way, Batman enters dream like places, diving into the psychosis of some of his rogues gallery, such as the Alice in Wonderland obsessed Mad Hatter and Maxie Zeus with a Messiah complex. After finding ‘hostage’ Dr. Cavendish in a bridal gown about to cut Dr. Adam’s throat, Batman stumbles upon a lost diary that reveals the true horrors of this asylum. Amadeus slit his mother, Elizabeth’s, throat to end her suffering being attacked by the illusion of a large bat. Blocking this memory, he claimed she committed suicide, but when “Mad Dog” Hawkins raped and murdered his wife and child, his memories returned and went insane, wearing his mother’s wedding dress with a vow to kill the evil “Bat”. In the present, Cavendish believes that Batman is “The Bat” that continues to bring more madness into Arkham and he needs to be stopped. In the end Cavendish is defeated and the lost souls of the Asylum, such as Two-Face still roam. McKean’s surrealist symbolism in his multi-media art coupled with Morrison’s psychoanalysis on Batman and his rogues is the modern foundation of the Arkham Asylum mythos.✌🏼💙🦇📚
