18+ MINORS AND THOSE WITHOUT AGE IN BIO DNI
warnings: swearing
AN: so while I figure out how to write post-war dan, I’m going to write pre-war Dan. Enjoy.
I pushed the door open and balanced the tray as I brought it out to the backyard. Dan looked up and darted to help me, leaving his stepfather to watch the grill.
“you should have told me you needed help.” He chided as he took the tray from me.
”I’ve got it Dan. I can balance a tray.” I laughed. He shook his head before leaning over to kiss my cheek. Turning back towards the grill, he took over the buns and condiments. “Dumbass.” I shook my head. His mom laughed from over by the picnic bench.
“Apparently I did raise him right.” she joked. I nodded as I went to sit down next to her.
“I’ll say you did. A proper gentleman.” Dan looked over at me and winked. “When he wants to be.” His stepfather and Dan continued to man the grill while his mom and I caught up. Soon enough, Dan put a plate with a burger down in front of me.
“Made just how you like it.” He said with a kiss to my cheek. Sitting down next to me with his own, Dan waited until his stepdad did the same before eating. “So ma, anything in particular you wanna see while you’re up here?”
“the fireworks mainly.” She answered. I nodded.
“you’ll be able to see them from back here. Last pretty much the whole week with the neighbors we got.” I shared a knowing smile with Dan.
“they get a little overzealous.” He agreed. “So you’ll see the biggest display you ever have.” His stepdad snorted.
“you two ever set any off?” Dan shook his head.
“nah.” Dan frowned. “There’s enough going on around here. We have other ways of celebrating the fourth.”
“Got some smoke bombs though.” I said with a smile. “But that’s about as far as we’ll go.” Dan nodded as he wrapped an arm around me.
“We brought some sparklers and some confetti things. Weren’t too sure what you were doing.” His mom said. Dan nodded. It got quiet all of a sudden. “When do you ship out?” My gaze drifted down to my plate and put my hand on dans leg.
“In a few weeks.” Dan said softly, gaze locked on me. “Boot camp at Pendleton and then off to vietnam in about a month or so. Least that’s what they say.” I leaned into Dan as he pulled me fully into a hug. He forced my head onto his shoulder and pressed a kiss to my temple.
“You going to live on base?” Dans stepdad asked. I shook my head.
“Won’t let me.” I shrugged. Dan kissed my head again. “It’s alright though. We can write each other.” His parents shared a look.
“we can stay…” his mom started. I shook my head.
“it’s fine.” I waved her off. “We’ll figure it out.” Dan nodded as he kissed me. I shared a look with his mom and shook my head again.
“to coming home safe.” His stepdad said as he held up his soda can. Dan, his mom and I half heartedly cheered with him before Dan took the dishes into the house. I followed him.
“Dan…” I said. He turned towards me and held his arms open.
“it’s going to be ok.” He whispered as he hugged me. “It’s going to be ok.”
