This is why #garlicmustard is the absolute worst. Ever since February I've been pulling it out little by little. Last year I tried to get a handle on it, but I gave up. Since it's a biannual, i focused on pulling the flowering plants only. But these are all the little #seedlings carpeting the forest floor. So so many. I made a big batch of pesto. Time for a bit of a #TheoryThursday post! (I know – it’s been a while) . Today at lunch I enjoyed a delicious pesto made by the hubby from wild garlic mustard (alliaria petiolata). We have always enjoyed hiking and forest walks, and at some point started gathering wild foods to use in snacks and meals. For those who want to try something new and natural, I can definitely recommend it! . Gathering wild foods is a big part of the past and present of humanity. The term ‘hunter-gatherer’ is now commonly used, but was made popular in the field by Lewis Binford (who I mentioned in my last #TheoryThursday post), often considered one of the most influential people in the history of archaeological research. Binford’s biggest contribution to archaeological theory was his “New Archaeology” in the 1960s, which led to theories of processual archaeology. . One example of this more process-focused way of thinking is ‘Optimal Foraging Theory’, which grew out of evolutionary ecology. Briefly, OFT was a framework that archaeologists could use to predict how hunter-gatherer societies would have used the surrounding resources to greatest advantage. In other words, how past societies would have maximised their hunting/gathering efficiency. The idea of using a model of some sort to predict how people in the past would have interacted with their environment is an interesting one, and has developed a lot since the introduction of OFT to look at many different aspects of past society, including migration and expansion. . Now, those of you who have been following me for a while can probably guess my problem with this theoretical framework! And one of the most common criticisms of OFT is indeed that it does not take into account cultural influence. It assumed that the people involved were all robots, bent on maximum efficiency, without accounting for external factors such as dietary taboos, social status, or even personal preference. Backyard forage is my favorite - garlic mustard is an invasive plant that grows prolifically in my yard - I use leaves, buds, and stems to make the most delicious sauerkraut. Onion grass (aka wild garlic) gets snipped into short pieces that I sprinkle on soups and salads. Daffodils are not good for eating, but they make me happy anyway. Wild garlic mustard pesto tonight! Garlic mustard is everywhere right now and I’ve seen all these posts about making pesto with it so I’m giving it a try. We add the cheese to the pasta but I used just leaves, wild garlic bulbs and greens that grow all over the place, juice from half a lemon and salt. Pretty tasty. So now I wonder, can it be frozen? Here is an excellent example of how a glaze can save the day. Last week's Perpetual Plant Journal entry was Alliaria petiolata, more commonly known as garlic mustard. It grows in New Jersey. I sketched it in pencil, late one afternoon before the rain began. That evening, I added color in my studio using a photo reference and artificial light. My concentration was more on achieving a bit of the red tint to the green leaves than it was to the green of the leaves. It looked fine to me until I snapped photos the next morning, holding it next to the plant. The leaves didn't look green at all. They looked yellow compared to the actual leaves once the sketch was in natural light. I had nothing to lose by adding a dilute glaze of blue/green using my favorite watercolor technique ... pulling the puddle. By pulling the glaze puddle gently over the leaves I was able to alter the color without harming the paint layer beneath it. I've attached photos of the before glazing and after glazing. The glaze worked well and the leaves now are a better match to the actual plant. I'm working in a Stillman and Birn Zeta Series sketchbook. The paper is thick enough and high enough quality to handle several layers of glazing when necessary. It also accepts ink nicely. The lettering is drawn first in pencil, then inked using a Platinum Carbon Ink fountain pen before adding color.
