hello Secret Santa here! Ah it's so interesting to know how other people chose dramas to watch! I also have a very long watchlist haha and it often gets longer if I see people talking about a new show (it's how I first got into kdramas) but sometimes I also end up choosing a drama just to see what it is with no prior info (that's how I recently started Run On and thankfully I'm liking it so far lol)! Also I'm curious what have been your favourite drama couples so far? I have couples I like more than the drama they were in so I'm curious to see if your fave couples are from your fave shows or from others as well!!
I can totally relate to liking a couple more than the show itself! Like, for example, the couple in Strong Woman Do Bong Soon are cute as buttons, but the show itself is a bit of a mess, with its odd slapstick humor gangster subplot and the overly-scary serial kidnapper/killer whatever that didn’t match the tone of the rest of the show. But I do find that usually my favorite couples tend to come from my favorite shows.
Definitely one of my biggest OTPs is from Healer, Jung-hoo x Young-shin. They’re so precious together, and I have trouble finding words to describe why they’re just the best. They truly feel like they’re meant to be together. I felt like the angst was justified and not just a plot device, which made it tolerable and so rewarding once they finally got together. It’s one of the few times where the “they knew each other as kids” trope really works. I think part of what makes them great is I not only believe that they love each other, I also believe in them as a couple. In some shows, I buy that the characters love each other, but as far as them as a couple, like, what would these two people do just hanging out together? In Healer, they have such a strong connection, great chemistry, and while there are some doubts and secrets that they keep from each other, they quickly end up being pretty good at communicating with each other.
I am a total sucker for the couples in Age of Youth. Jin Myung x Jae Wan are just… so sweet. I think I’m a sucker for a cold girl that is then pursued by a soft boi who just wants to love her. Ji Won x Sung Min are absolutely hysterical together and goshdangit just kiss already. Hwi Young x Soo Hyun from Chicago Typewriter make my heart hurt. Haru x Dan Oh from ExtraOrdinary You are my two cute babies. Both Seo Ri x Woo Jin from Thirty But Seventeen and Gang Doo x Moon Soo from Just Between Lovers are couples where two traumatized people help each other heal and grow and I just feel healed watching them <3 So yeah, those are some of my fave couples, and they’re pretty much from my favorite shows! What are some of the couples that you like more than the show they’re in?

6. K-Drama NOTP(s)?
Pretty much all of my NOTPs are because the guy was a total jerkface.
Kim Hye Jin and Ji Seong Jun (She Was Pretty)
Cha Jin Wook and Lee Soo Mi (My Secret Romance)
Ugh i hate saying this one but it’s true… Wang So and Hae Soo
The Heirs and Boys over Flowers for obvious reasons
Dnd the pair that’s about to kiss in Memories of Alhambra. I mean, I’ll enjoy the kiss sure, but you cannot make me like them lol.
26. Favorite Lee Min Ho drama?
Honestly over time I’ve settled on The Legend of the Blue Sea but not because of Lee Min Ho…While he’s VERY cute, Jun Ji Hyun is the reason everyone should watch this….plus mermaids?
27. Favorite K-Drama bromance?
I love Gang Doo and Sang Man in just between lovers, and Lee Joon Ki and Bong Doo Shik were such silly soft dorks in Eulachaha Waikiki. Also, any bromance involving Kang Ki Young is perfection.
Tumblr media
52. Favorite male lead character?
Ok, this is legit hard for me, because I so easily fall in love with soft beta males that my list is a mile long! The drama could completely suck but if the boy is soft…oh man. Off the top of my head the boys from: Healer, Stranger, the attorney and younger boy from The House Helper, Nam Shin III, Chan from Thirty But Seventeen… there’s too many!

Wow Just Between Lovers has got to be the best kdrama I’ve ever seen. Like it literally beat out Healer and Because This My First Life, two dramas that I love dearly!
The pacing was great, it never felt like it dragged and every scene felt important. All the characters go through great character development. The acting was amazing like wow I’m so blown away. The show dealt with such heavy topics and yet handled everything with care and respect. Gang Doo and Moon Soo’s relationship was developed so well and I loved how it was built on mutual respect and care for each other (every scene they had together killed me, okay, they were so cute and sweet).
And even though this drama was overwhelmingly sad, it ended happy but it didn’t feel cheesy in any way and it didn’t feel forced.
Anyway I am so sad that this drama is over and I think it’s going to give me a drama hang over like...how are other dramas supposed to live up to it now??

Just Between Lovers, ep 13
Gang Doo and Moon Soo
THEY ARE THE CUTEST.  Honestly, they had so many super cute moments.  From Moon Soo not being able to say that they made out when Gang Doo is grinning like an idiot remembering their kiss.  Gang Doo saying he was being jealous but he’s also amazed that she chose him over Joo Won, who is a “good man”.  But Moon Soo explains that Gang Doo is a better person for her, a good man. Gang Doo buying Moon Soo a gift on the sly and her huge grin when she tried on the hat and gloves.
More important than their cute moments, is how Gang Doo was totally there for Moon Soo, just as she was for him. I’m not sure when Moon Soo’s dad got Gang Doo’s number but Gang Doo came running.  He took care of her. He gave her his coat and carried her on his back. He listens to her. She says she hates herself - he says he’ll just like her more. She says she doesn’t want to go home - he says to stay with him. She says she wants to run away - he says where too? Side note: they both like each other’s scent.
He also thinks to bring her to Wan Jin’s place.  Their conversation was just about perfect.  I’m happy they talked about the accident, though I’m not sure I agree with Gang Doo not telling her what happened.  If that’s a piece of her that she wants back, I think he should tell her.  But she didn’t press the issue so I guess she doesn’t really want to know. And I love how they said they liked each other, but Moon Soo likes him so much she’s not sure if it’s okay. He reassures her that is.
The “what if” montage made me tear up.  Though it’s not clear if they are together in it, I choose to believe that they are. Why else would Moon Soo be watching the soccer game (which her real self does not like) with such a huge grin while watching Gang Doo and saying with 100% confidence that they would win. Regardless, it was nice to see them so happy and following their dreams.
But that was not to be. He says that they have to work harder than anyone else to be happy. And they share another really soft kiss.
Moon Soo’s parents
Moon Soo’s dad calling Gang Doo was important, I think.  He’s acknowledging Moon Soo’s feelings for Gang Doo and Gang Doo’s for Moon Soo. He may not be happy about it, but Moon Soo’s happiness comes first.  Plus he also trusted Gang Doo to take care of her.  He knows that he and her mom can’t, or won’t change, but it doesn’t have to be that way for Moon Soo.
As for her mom, I’m not sure what to say.  Moon Soo obviously has felt that her mom wished she died instead of her sister.  Moon Soo is also right - if she had stayed with Yeon Soo, she would be dead as well. So in either scenario, she’s dead.  I won’t presume to say how a mother who lost a child should grieve except Moon Soo’s mom needs to understand she still has a child who lived.
Wan Jin
Honestly, I wish they spent more time on Wan Jin over Yoo Jin and Joo Won. A bit surprised that she comes from a wealthy family but she does not screw around on those who disrespect the fact that she’s in a wheelchair.  That was a bit ruthless but I loved it.
I also loved hearing more about her and Moon Soo’s relationship.
Yoo Jin and Joo Won
I don’t think Joo Won is as good of a man as everyone else seems to think.  He’s a bit self centred? Yes you lost your father.  But that doesn’t mean that Yoo Jin (or Yoo Taek for that matter) didn’t lose something.  Yoo Jin lost the man she loved and still loves.  Yoo Taek lost his freedom and dream.  All of them are miserable. For Joo Won to basically agree to ....pimp out Yoo Jin is disrespectful.
As for Yoo Jin, I didn’t appreciate how she spoke to Moon Soo.  Moon Soo is not responsible for Joo Won’s feelings, especially when they were not returned.  It’s not like they dated for a long time, she dumped him and then immediately when to Gang Doo (to which I could see some point to Yoo Jin’s argument).  It was literally a one sided crush that when Moon Soo found out about was extremely uncomfortable and she’s even quitting her job because of it.
LALALA not discussing Jae Young’s finding out the medicine is for pain but not for those with liver problems and her looking up Gang Doo’s medical records to see he has liver problems and his nose is bleeding again.

Just Between Lovers: A K-Drama Review
This slice-of-life drama seemed to come out of nowhere (mostly because the title was misleading) and instantly pulled me in. Below is my review of what I consider the best currently airing kdrama of the season.
Tumblr media
About This Drama: ‘Just Between Lovers’ follows the lives of survivors of a tragic building collapse accident. It’s a slice-of-life drama about the struggles of life after experiencing deep loss and how relationships around that are affected.
The Good Stuff:
Beautiful Storytelling: This is not your average K-Drama. From beginning to end, Just Between Lovers has the perfect balance of sadness, joy, anger and love. It is definitely a sad story with heartbreaking moments, but the writers allow us to follow the characters as they deal with the pain and loss and experience happiness and friendship so there is the perfect balance. Those of you who are scared to watch because of the feels: There are a bunch of funny and cute moments throughout and there are even some classic tropes like the piggy back ride and cute dates!
(--spoilers ahead--)
Tumblr media
Realistic Character Development: Moon Soo and Gang Doo might be my favorite deeply developed couple from a K-Drama. You experience all of the pain and fears they have, as the show reveals what that happened to them. Step by step you learn what their deepest fears and traumas are, and all of the quirks and imperfections of being human. The side characters are also deeply developed (though not as much as the leads) showing you how everyone deals with tragedy differently. Not everyone heals completely but finds their own path and that’s how life really is.
Moon Soo as a Soft but Strong Female Lead: After ‘Because This is My First Life’ had a quiet and unassuming female lead who ended up taking control, I’ve realized I LOVE SOFT STRONG FEMALE LEADS. A strong female doesn’t have to come in screaming ;-) Moon Soo is struggling with her family and guilt from the accident, but she still is steadfast in her career, has extremely high ethics, and is the strong portion of the main couple. Without her, I’m not sure Gang Doo would have ever healed (or even stayed alive).
Tumblr media
Gang Doo is everyone’s favorite boyfriend: At first I thought Gang Doo came on a little violent (he has a lot of guilt and ptsd so his rages were kinda disturbing) but once the main couple starts sharing their pain and struggles, he basically becomes the world’s best boyfriend. Gang Doo knows he got the best end of the deal so it’s super cute. If you like romance, you’ll LOVE the two of these precious beans together.
Mental Illness and Disability Representation: ALL of the characters who were in the accident are dealing with some form of mental illness: PTSD, Depression, Anxiety. Alcoholism etc and I love how the show empathizes with them and doesn’t look down on them (especially as someone who is constantly working on my own mental heath). It never pretends they are perfect or on the other hand totally lost, but instead allows you to see the reality of what people go through when they have these issues. My favorite side characters are Kim Wan Jin and Sang Man(!!!). Kim Wan Jin is in a wheelchair due to a different accident and is feisty, strong, smart and super capable while still having to deal with discrimination. Sang Man appears to have a mild intellectual disability but is clearly the smartest and most insightful character of the show - he is a joy and most of the best quotes are from him - I LOVE HIM!
Great Cinematography and Soundtrack: Both of these are lovely! Whenever a show is stunning, I can’t resist making gifs of everything and well, I’ve giffed my heart out. The OST isn’t released on itunes yet but I’ve listed to the songs over and over again on youtube so... <3
Tumblr media
The Bad Stuff:
Honestly unless I’m being SUPER nit-picky there really isn’t a lot to complain about. There is one jarring error but the rest are small things like: the forced breakup for 1 episode that dramas always like to do for some reason - (just make the show 15 episodes DUDE. We don’t need that heartbreak!)
The main bad thing is everyone’s least favorite character: Jung Yoo Taek is an interesting villain because he doesn’t actually have very much power. He’s easy to hate because he’s a jerk, but he’s kind of a sad human and you can tell he doesn’t even like himself really. But the biggest issue I had was his relationship with Ma-Ri: A strong independent woman who has NO reason to actually like him. The writers either wanted to tie their plot line up with a pretty bow or just failed Ma-Ri as a character.
One funny side note that isn’t really negative but...because it’s a k-drama, everyone who is struggling with their traumatic past (included the architect) gets a job on the EXACT JOB SITE that the trauma originally happened and there is a TON of stress revolved around that. Why doesn’t everyone just quit? Just saying ;-)
Tumblr media
In Conclusion: It’s always a joy to write a review about a show I love because I can hopefully convince others to watch it too! It’s got a great balance of everything: sadness, joy, funny, heartfelt moments and well, it’s almost perfect - I miss it already!
Rating of show: 9/10
Handling of social issues: 9/10 (highest I’ve ever given on a k-drama)
