March TBR--
Tumblr media
I'm hoping the month of March goes a little better for me reading wise. I felt like I got a decent amount read in February (while still sticking to my goals for the year) but a lot of it was so mid. I'm ready for any of these books to just grab me by the throat and keep me hooked. I have two rereads in preparation for new releases later this year. I also have two NetGalley ARCs and a hockey romance (because I've read one every month of the year so far, why not keep that going?).
The Stardust Thief by Chelsea Abdullah-- This is one of those books you hear about a ton on the bookish spaces of the internet and I decided it was finally time to see what all of the hype is about. In this one, we follow Loulie al-Nazari as she and her jinn bodyguard are forced to help the sultan find an ancient lamp that has the power to revive the barren land. There is a ton more in the synopsis, but like a lot of reviewers these days, I feel like synopses are starting to give too much away. I'm hoping for some City of Brass vibes and lots of adventure.
The Foxglove King by Hannah Whitten (Reread)-- I read this one a year ago and I'm excited to dive back into it before the next book comes out. In this one we follow Lore who escaped from a cult beneath the city of Dellaire over 10 years ago. Lore's job as a runner sustains her, but when a run goes wrong and her power is revealed she's forced to work for the Sainted King to find the person in his court responsible for the deaths of entire villages on the outskirts of the country. Thrust into the Sainted King's glittering court, Lore becomes tangled in politics, religion, and forbidden romance. This was my favorite book of January last year so I'm excited to reread.
The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu-- A first contact with aliens story that's been translated from the original (and set to be released as a Netflix show soon) and follows the outcome of a secret military project that sent signals into space to establish contact with aliens. Will the alien civilization on the brink of destruction be welcomed on Earth or will there be a fight against an invasion?
Teen Titans: Raven by Kami Garcia and Gabriel Picolo (Reread)-- Before the next in the graphic novel series comes out, I plan on doing a quick reread of this one. Number one in this series introduces us to Raven who is forced to move to New Orleans following the accident that takes her foster mother's life. But that accident has also taken her memory. Then strange things start happening. This is a fun series and I'm glad I get the chance to reread it.
No Coincidence by Rafat Kosik-- Translated from the original Polish, this is the first novel in the Cyberpunk 2077 series. Apparently, this series includes collected editions of limited series, standalone graphic novels, and also full length novels. There are four authors who have contributed to it. It is all based on the game Cyberpunk 2077. My understanding is that you can start in a few different places. I hope it's true. Let's talk about the actual book now. This one appealed to me because of the cover. But the synopsis really got me. A misfit group is forced to do a heist thanks to some good, old-fashioned blackmail. The gang includes a veteran turned renegade, a Militech sleeper agent, an amateur net runner, a corporate negotiator, a ripperdoc, and a techie. They must come together to pull off the deadly heist. Also...is this the third book in this TBR about people being forced to work for people above them??
Must Love Hockey by Sarina Bowen (Kindle)-- This short hockey romance follows a woman who has an allergic reaction at a hockey game and is rescued by an equipment manager whose name she doesn't manage to catch. I've read and enjoyed Sarina Bowen before so I'm hoping this is a fun and quick read.
The Dead Cat Tail Assassins by P. Djeli Clark (NetGalley)-- The Dead Cat Tail Assassins are not cats. Nor do they have tails. But they are most assuredly dead. Those sworn to the Matron of Assassins--resurrected, deadly, wiped of their memories--have only three unbreakable vows. First, the contract must be just. Second, even the most powerful assassin may only kill the contracted. Third, once you accept a job, you must carry it out. And if you stray? A final death would be a mercy. Eveen's newest mission brings her face-to-face with a past she isn't supposed to remember and a vow she can't forget.
Ghost Station by S.A. Barnes (NetGalley)-- When I tell you that I was squealing the day I found out I got access to this book, please, do picture it as a cute and dainty squeal instead of the insanity that actually unfolded. I loved Dead Silence from this author so when I saw they had a new space horror novel I HAD to try to get an ARC. Space exploration can be lonely and isolating. Psychologist Dr. Ophelia Bray is assigned to a small exploration crew and she is determined to make a difference. But as they begin establishing residency on an abandoned planet, it becomes clear that the crew is hiding something. Her crewmates are far more interested in investigating the eerie planet and unraveling the mystery behind the previous colonizer's hasty departure than opening up to her. That is, until their pilot is discovered gruesomely murdered. I cannot wait to read this one.
This TBR is giving me such a good feeling. There's Sci-Fi, there's Fantasy, there's Romance, there's Sci-Fi/Horror (a beloved genre pairing for me), there's a graphic novel. I'm just hoping March is such a good reading month. I kind of need it.

he had a headstart
ch1/? || 2522 words
archive of our own
That night, Sally Jackson would go through with her plan. She rehearsed it. She reviewed it. She prepared for it. And most importantly, she knew that it would work.
She had done her research before doing anything else, the discreet visit to the library reviving the nostalgia she held for her failed academic career. Life hardly ever goes as it should, and her parents’ sickness, as unfortunate as it was, kept her from pursuing higher education.
Maybe she would go back to school one day. For that to be a possibility, however, tonight had to be successful.
Books on botanic and natural poisons were surprisingly easy to access, though that might be due to how likely it was for someone to use that knowledge to plan a murder. Not impossible, of course, but the chances were slim enough for the knowledge she needed to be so readily available.
She read through the books that day, with her young son, Percy, looking through picture books by her side. Gabriel had wanted the apartment to himself that day, and she had jumped on the occasion to both complete the first step of her plan and get her baby away from that man.
Percy was five now. Most of his memories included the one she called a husband, and while she knew the risks, they would have been exposed to should she not have married Gabriel Ugliano, she could not help but regret her decision. She wanted Percy safe but was unwilling to pay that price, the price of a human monster getting to break her boy before the real monsters could even get a chance to try.
Sally married Gabriel Ugliano when Percy was two. Three years later, she was going to get rid of him. The only question left unanswered was how.
And the answer was foxglove.
It’s a wonder how such a pretty flower can become a weapon once you know how to use it properly. It just so happened to also align perfectly with her current situation. The fact that someone thought of planting it in Central Park was only an added bonus, for it made her quest much easier.
All she had needed to do was ask one of the nature spirits where she could find the plant, and after explaining to the kind dryad that she was clearsighted and what she was going to use the flower for, they were more than willing to show her the way to a nearby patch of flowers that was littered with it.
After that, it was almost too easy. Gabriel didn’t even question the bowl of chili she brought him, eating it faster than he could taste it. He returned the empty dish swiftly, leaving her with shaking hands and the usual chores.
*** * ***
Deep breaths, Sally. In, and out. She stared down at the steaming bowl of chili, not yet believing the reality of the moment. It was just like any other night, with Gabe watching sports far too loudly for anyone else’s taste, and her cooking him a meal while Percy drew with his crayons at the counter.
Expect tonight she had almost ruined the recipe four times due to stress. Except tonight Percy favored his red crayons rather than his usual blue as if sensing that something was happening.
Tonight was real. The chili bowl was real. The page of paper filled with red crayons was real. And the powdered foxglove, all remains of which she flushed down the sink, had been far too real.
She glanced at her husband Gabe through the door. He was blissfully unaware of his faith, yelling at the ongoing football match with a pack of beer between his legs. Chips and other similarly unhealthy foods littered the coffee table. She still couldn’t believe how his lifestyle made it so easy for her to build the narrative for his murder untimely death.
Tonight was the night.
*** * ***
She fed Percy his meal -a different one, that she kept as far as possible from the poisoned chili-, did the dishes, put her son to sleep, and promptly went to bed herself, bringing a book along.
There was no way she was getting any sleep that night.
Everything that came after that went fast. She walked out of the bedroom the next morning and called the emergency services when she ‘found’ her husband dead in his seat. Next thing she knew, they took his body away and hooked her up with a funeral home to organize funerals for the poor excuse of a man she married.
She went through everything, every piece of paperwork, every detail of his funeral, as quickly as possible. She was eager to put all of this behind her. Eager for a new start.
His family had come, and so had his friends. Sally would have preferred not to show up at all, but it would stain her image as the dutiful, mourning widow. So there she stood, all clad in black with her toddler by her sides, playing her role to perfection.
*** * ***
His mother had been the first to approach her.
Sally never liked the old lady, just like she had never liked, or Olympus forbids, loved her son. Her near-constant sneer and the dirty look she gave Percy every time the two of them stood in the same room never allowed Sally to warm up to the woman.
“The first few years are the hardest,” were her surprisingly honest first words to her. “But don’t let it crush you like I did. For your son’s sake.”
Without waiting for a reply, Mrs. Ugliano walked away, leaving Sally to process her words by herself. She carded her fingers through Percy’s hair, unsure what to do with her mother-in-law’s sudden concern for her son’s well-being.
It took her a moment, but eventually, Sally remembered that Gabe, in a way Mrs. Ugliano must have perceived as similar enough to her own story, also lost his father at a young age.
Guilt squirmed in her guts, calling her out for her lies.
Sally stood strong though, ignoring the weight of her sins to maintain the mask of grief she fabricated for herself to cement her tale.
*** * ***
The next thing on her list was to erase all traces of that man ever being in their lives. The memories might still haunt her -hopefully the same isn’t true for Percy-, but destroying all physical evidence would help her breathe better.
It was not an easy task. His trash was everywhere, from the ground to the cupboard, without forgetting between the couch’s cushions, the furniture smelled at him, and the walls were stained by his smoking.
The longer she spent working on cleansing the apartment of his presence, the stronger she felt the urge to burn the whole thing down. And that’s what she ended up doing, in a very much non-literal way. Thankfully for her and Percy, Gabriel had left them a hefty sum through both his personal savings and his life insurance, and as it turns out, moving out was easier than making the place liveable again.
Sally then reenrolled herself into school with what was left of that money, fully planning on getting a higher education to find a better-paying job to give her son all the chances she could. He deserved that much after Gabriel.
Her work schedule at the candy shop swiftly shifted from full-time to part-time, and with more time to spend with her son, a chance to finally pursue the education she had always wanted, and the absence of a husband in her life, her brand-new good mood quickly started to affect her job.
Her colleagues were the first to notice and were happy that things were finally looking up for her. The regulars were the next ones to do, commenting easily on her improved mood.
*** * ***
Mr. Fletcher was the kind of customer that made Sally’s day. He was a gentleman, always took the time to talk with her and her colleagues when he wasn’t in a rush, and regularly brought his dates to the shop, as if to show off the small business he visited on a weekly basis.
And most importantly, Mr. Fletcher gave her back her hope in humanity, if only for a moment, each time he walked into the shop with an order from the nearby orphanage. He was everything she would have looked for in a man but was also happily married to his husband.
What could you ask more than for a man to take the time out of his day to buy candies to the less fortunate?
It had been a while since she last saw him, what with the funerals when he walked into the shop. The bell cheerfully rang when the door opened, and Sally raised her eyes from her literature textbook to meet his eyes. She smiled when she recognized him.
“Mr. Fletcher. How have you been doing?” she greeted him politely.
He paused, as if not expecting to see her there that day. “Sally. I’ve been well. How about you? You seem… happier.”
She considered his odd choice of words for a moment. Had she really looked that noticeably miserable before Gabriel’s passing? Or maybe did she simply look better due to the good turn her life had finally taken? With the new flat and her debut in higher education, on top of her concealed crime, she supposed that could be it.
“I suppose I am,” she finally replied.
“Whatever it is, I’m happy for you.”
“Thank you.” There was a pause, during which neither of them knew what to say before Sally redirected the conversation. “So! What would it be today?”
“Right!”
They moved along easily, the conversation taking a sweet focused turn as Sally helped him fill the day’s order, and just as quickly as he had walked in, Mr. Fletcher was out of the door, bringing with him a bag heavy with candy.
Oblivious, Sally returned to her textbook, once again silently thanking her employer for their lenience which allowed her to study during her shifts.
Mr. Fletcher, however, walked away with more questions than he had previous to his visit to the candy shop. Thoughtfully, he wondered what happened to the source of the bruises he had observed on Sally during his previous visits. It might be worth an investigation.
*** * ***
It took a few more days for the other shoe to drop, and when it did, it was at the time and place she expected it the least.
She had just come home from a long shift, which had immediately followed the two classes she had in the morning, meeting and paying Percy’s babysitter in the doorway. Locking the door behind her, she kicked off her shoes and walked into the apartment, which was already well obscured by the night.
Blindly, she put her purse on the dining table before searching for the light switch. The place was still unfamiliar enough to her that she had to take a moment to search for it, feeling the wall with the tip of her fingers until she found it and the light came.
And where she had expected to turn and see only her purse on the empty table, she found instead her purse, Mr. Fletcher from the candy store, and two strangers sitting in her kitchen.
She paused, unsure of what to do in this situation, staring at the intruders and only taking her eyes off them for a fraction of a second, which she used to locate the knife block. She might appreciate her talks with her clientele while on the job, but the same wasn’t true when she found them in her home at ungodly hours of the night.
“That’s your idea of a potential recruit?” one of the strangers commented eventually, breaking the silence. They looked her up and down with a sneer on their face. “She looks more like a single mother than anything else.”
There was a sigh.
“That’s because she is a single mother, Paisley. Her son probably is sleeping in the next room,” Fletcher informed them, his tone so detached it seemed otherworldly, especially in their current predicament.
“That begs the question, then; why are we here?”
Fletcher opened his mouth to answer this Paisley person’s question once more, but this time, Sally beats him to it.
“What is this?” she asks. Her tone is shaky, but firm, in a way she hopes indicates her willingness to resort to physical violence to defend her home.
All three of the intruders exchange a glance, and after a moment, the second stranger, who had yet to say a word, spoke up.
“An assessment.”
“An assessment for what?”
‘Paisley’ whistled in a totally not subtle way. “She’s willing to hear us out. She either has as much potential as you said she had, or she’s completely stupid. Fletcher was however quiet to elbow them into silence.
He turned toward her and answered her question. “We know you killed your husband, and-”
“I didn’t though,” she replied automatically. The lie, nowadays so solidly implanted in her daily life, became as easy to speak as the truth. She knew it was false, but she repeated it often enough that it might as well have become her truth.
“…but you did. You might have convinced the world otherwise, but we know. We recognize the signs.”
“And what might those be?”
“The high concentration of cardiac glycosides in your late husband’s system,” the third intruder immediately stated. “Commonly associated with foxglove poisoning,” he added as an afterthought.
“Let’s say it’s true,” she said, shifting closer to the knife bock discreetly. “How would you even know that?”
“It’s written all over his charts at the morgue.”
“And let me guess. You guys went to check Gabe’s toxicology report just on the off chance that I might have murdered my husband. Is intuition all you need to investigate a widowed mother?” she asked the last question with a hint of sarcasm.
“No,” came Fletcher’s answer. “But a change in behavior does. You have to admit that your being so much happier after the facts were curious as of itself. And you started sporting fewer bruises after his passing.”
Had his marks on her skin been so visible?
She felt angry for a moment at the thought. The world saw. The world knew. And yet they let her suffer. They let her son, poor innocent Percy, suffer. They knew, and yet, they did nothing.
She took a more direct step toward the knife block, hoping that the outright hostility would make them leave. “What are you, the cops?” More venom than necessary slipped into the voice.
“Quite on the contrary,” Paisley said. “We’re assassins. Hitmen. Professional killers. Whatever you want to call it.
“…what?”
Fletcher stood up and made a step in her direction. She took a step back as a reflex, despite his relaxed posture and hands stored deep in his pockets showing her how little of a threat he represented.
He spoke again, undisturbed by her reaction to his approach. “How do you feel about a new job, Sally?”

Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s “Lady Lilith.” This painting was supposed to represent the body’s beauty, as opposed to his painting “Sybilla Palmifera,” representing the soul’s beauty. From the link:
DGR's remarks to his friend Hake (21 April 1870) are fundamental: “The picture is called Lady Lilith by rights (only I thought this would present a difficulty in print without paint to explain it,) and represents a ‘Modern Lilith’ combing out her abundant golden hair and gazing on herself in the glass with that self-absorption by whose strange fascination such natures draw others within their own circle.” (Fredeman, Correspondence 70.110)
Allen's excellent study of DGR's treatment of the Lilith theme draws attention to the importance of the hair iconography—in particular to the relation DGR draws between hair as a sign of erotic power and as a figure of entrapment.
DGR poses Lilith in a manner strongly reminiscent of his 1870 picture Woman with a Fan , a portrait of Fanny Cornforth.
The floral paraphernalia include a semi-coronal of white roses, which appear to signify cold sensuous love (according to legend, roses gained their red coloring only when Eve was created, at which point the rose blushed at the sight of her beauty); a crown of poppies on Lilith's lap (signifying sleep and forgetfulness); and a spray of foxglove on the bureau (signifying insincerity).
... Allen calls attention to the contemporary relation between the figure of the femme fatale and the Women's Emancipation Movement in England. More specifically, she notes that among DGR's papers was a letter to the editor of the Athenaeum dated November 1869 in which the author, Ponsonby A. Lyons, makes the following observation: “Lilith, about whom you ask for information, was the first strong-minded woman and the original advocate of women's rights” (WMR, Rossetti Papers 1862 to 1870, 483).

Scrapbook 2023 | Pt IV
NGL, a little heated that Tumblr's new editing bullshit has made it so I can't save more than a month at a time, so I guess I'll have monthly ones from now on.
For anyone that’s new to this, this is how I keep track of all of the things that I enjoy and/or create throughout the year. I have literally been doing this since I had a livejournal.
It’s a nice little snippet of my life and helps to organize my brain.
A reminder:
Normal font - Indifferent/Neutral Italicized font - Enjoyed bold font - Loved with an asterisk* - All time favorite (bracketed titles) - Re-watches/Re-reads strikethough - Disliked
Goals are: read 65 books, finish 4 video games, write more than 20 fics or something larger than 20k, and expand on your original novel outline to the point that you START WRITING.

• ARC Review: The Foxglove King •
If you love the structure and pacing of YA fantasy, but always wish the books were a little edgier, the characters a little older, and the romance a lot spicier – then I have just the thing for you!
The first book in a new series, The Foxglove King is set in a world that feels loosely inspired by Paris and the Sun King’s Versailles. The story follows Lore, a spy for a criminal syndicate and necromancer who is captured by an order of monks and given teo options: get close to the Prince to learn if he is a traitor instigating war or die.
So Lore finds herself suddenly living at the Palace with Gabriel, a haunted and loyal duke-turned-monk, and clinging to a flimsy backstory as she tried to get close to Bastian, the rakeish prince who has mastered the art of persona. Which isn’t hard to do since she feels a seemingly supernatural pull toward both Bastian and Gabe – and they feel the same.😏
There’s court intrigue, there’s political tension, there’s culty religious fervor and mystery, there’s crackling, angsty chemistry beneath all three of our main characters, and the writing? There were several moments when I had to pause because a line was just *that good.*
It’s basically a book full of all my favorite things – including a third act filled with twists and reveals that will have you shrieking in both horror and delight, and an epilogue that will have you waiting very impatiently for the next book.
I enjoyed every second I spent with Lore, Gabe, and Bastian, and can already tell I won’t be shutting up about this one for a very long time.
☠️ A massive thank you to Orbit Books for the opportunity to read and review an advance copy of The Foxglove King! The book is out on March 7th.🖤

🐉RATING: 🔥🔥🔥🔥/5 🎉Happy book birthday to Hannah Whitten and The Foxglove King! The Foxglove King is full of mythology and court intrigue. Caught in the middle are the three main characters - Lore, Gabriel, and Bastian. Lore grew up working for her mothers as a poison runner and spy. Gabriel is a member of the Presque Mort, an elite cadre of monks protecting the kingdom. Bastian is the Sun Prince, a charming rogue set to inherit the throne. None of them can fully trust the others as they work together to uncover the King’s plans and stay alive. While not a fan of love triangles, I did like the three main characters and all their smoldering desire. I enjoyed how they were caught up in the power plays of church and state. They knew they were being used as pawns, but fought against their manipulation. All this maneuvering is set against a dark world with catacombs, necromancy, mysterious deaths, and a burried goddess leaking deadly “Mortem.” This is the first book in a new series, but the plot lines wrap-up enough at the end to give the reader some satisfaction. I am curious about how the relationships will play out in the next book. I expect there will be more secret maneuvering and a greater focus on the theme of destiny vs. free will. I also hope the world building expands. The threat of war is ever present in The Foxglove King, so perhaps we will learn more about the neighboring kingdom, its rulers and mythology. I’m definitely on board to continue reading this series, and eager to see how the story plays out. For the fanfic emoji asks: ⛔ 🙋‍♀️🌞
⛔ Do you have a fic you started, but scrapped?
Yes! Here are a few (I might still get to them someday)
A fic called The Life and Times of Gabrielle de Lioncourt, about Gabrielle's mortal life in Italy before she married the Marquis. This isn't actually scrapped, it's now a WIP that you will hopefully see soon!
a fic about Lestat being a dissociated expat fucking his way through the salons of Cario in the 1780s being all depressed about Nicki and his mom abandoning him and then going back to France during the height of the revolution and seeing massive carnage and that his brothers all got killed and being like “oh” and then seeing his dad still alive and feeling major child guilt and having to take him across the ocean and being like “I am being so brave and normal about all of this”
A fic called The Prince Consort Louis de Pointe du Lac (TPCLdPdL) basically just fluffy shenanigans and married sex smut
A fic called The Rescue of The Vampire Lestat: Louis and Gabrielle go on a road trip to rescue Lestat from Memnoch's hell
A fic called Call Me Lulu, basically Louis crossdressing in the 1790s so he could dance with Lestat in public
AU where Magnus never kidnaps Lestat, and he and Nicki live happily ever after (more or less) in Paris
A fic called Foxglove where Nicki has performance anxiety that gives him really bad heart palpitations before getting on stage at Renaud's. One day he passes out and Lestat takes him to a doctor (with money that he obtained through...not so honorable means). The doctor prescribes foxglove/digitalis, which also happens to be a poison. Lestat worries that Nicki might try to overdose on it.
Human AU where Louis goes to therapy
🙋‍♀️ Do any irl people know you write fanfic?
My sisters do. Although they don't know which fandoms or where to find them (at least I hope to God they don't lmao)
🌞 Do you have a preferred time of day to write?
It varies but I usually write dialogue on my phone notes app when I'm caffeinated (like in the morning or after lunch) and then sit down and work on the rest of it with a glass of wine or three after dinner

Do I agree that The Foxglove King reads a bit like YA instead of adult fantasy or with the fact that the dialogue sounds too modern for a Versailles inspired court piece? Yeah, there is a contrast between Hannah Whitten´s beautiful descriptions and how the characters spoke, and many readers may find it unbearable, but I did not pay it too much attention. On the contrary, I found the dialogue funny and refreshing. Plus, what's the point of creating a whole fantasy universe if you cannot play with how people there speak? This is not historical fiction which would have to follow all the period drama rules. Overall, I felt these things too, but it didn't stop me from enjoying it very much.
The Foxglove King is a very engaging dark fantasy with an intriguing magic system based on death magic called Mortem and life-force Spiritum, ever present poison, court debauchery, religion centered plot, a protective and bit brainwashed monk (he gets out of it, don't worry) and dark-haired prince charming (who knows how to take a punch). “Heresy,” he said, voice hoarse from shouting. “Evil!” “Melodrama.” Lore’s lips felt numb, and so did the rest of her. I thought the magic system was unique, and I enjoyed reading about that. Necromancy magic may not feel THAT special, but the way it was described here was definitely original. Just imagine a death magic wielder, who can sense death in all objects around as well as dead animals and people, and can pull the essence of death out and then give it back to revive the dead, making them essentially zombies that can be given instructions to follow. Not to forget that people of Dellaire live with a literal decaying death goddess Nyxaria underneath their city, occasionally leaking out deadly magic which the warrior-monks from Presque Mort have to stop. It was so cool! I love how Hannah Whitten works with fantasy religion and the sub-themes that it brings. “The Bleeding God knows our plight and gives us benediction to do as we must in His service.” The story also focused on the use of magic/poison to prolong one’s life and how it slowly and literally transforms greedy people into monsters. The imagery of how manipulating Mortem affected the body was amazing. I loved how dark and macabre it got. Generally, I love when the use of magic has its consequences and here it is one of the important themes, with a bonus of showing how the highborn and rich can easily circumvent the laws as far as their benefit is concerned. Yeah, this court may seem all gold and glitter, but it's actually rotten to the core. I loved Lore. She is unapologetically taking care of herself to the very end. She is thrown into the royal court to get close to the Sun Prince Bastian Arceneaux and spy on him for his father, the Sainted King August, and his uncle Anton, the Priest Exalted. To provide a cover for her, a Presque Mort monk-slash-duke Gabe returns to court to pose as her cousin helping Lore with the introduction to high society. I loved how cautious she was about all of it. “Lore was selfish. If it came down to her or the world, Lore chose herself.” Gabriel is a brooding bodyguard with an eyepatch covering one eye and a celibacy vow which does not stop him from looking at Lore as no cousin and monk should. Despite wanting to yell at him to wake up and not to believe the church and Priest Exalted so blindly, I could not help but to get to like him. The court's heir, prince Bastian, was so compelling. He's got long dark hair, tends to make dirty jokes and tends to wander around half undressed. Plus, he's got layers and I could not help but be intrigued by him. Watching him navigate the court while tending to his own plans was so much fun. I craved more scenes with him and the only thing I wish for when it comes to the next book is to get more of him. “I have been told I possess magic fingers, but the context wasn’t anything holy.” Since both of the male leads captured my interest, I did not mind the romantic triangle at the center at all. The trio of determined spy heroine, tormented monk and rebel prince works perfectly together. All three of them are reluctantly drawn in court politics and machinations in the end finding unexpected allies in one another. The suspense between them was SO exciting. They absolutely work the best when they are all together. I simply love dynamics like this one. Overall, The Foxglove King was a fast and very entertaining read for me. The ending was AMAZING! I can't wait to see where the story will go in the next installment. I am excited for the trouble our main trio will surely cause. Thank you to NetGalley and Orbit for the eARC in exchange for an honest review!

EXPERIENCE  /  HOW  LONG  (  MONTHS  /  YEARS? ) : I have been writing for about 11 years now!
BEST  EXPERIENCE :   OH GOD SO ig it kinda sucks cause this is actually fairly recent BUT the best RP experience I ever had was my plot with @batoushoujo, @cxnfectioniism and @desparialuna . It’s the first group plot I have ever been involved in. Ever. And it’s just,,, been a lot of fun. Even if one of us is off for like 8 months, when we get back on we can pick off right where we left off and it’s really nice. Another good one is meeting @ohfiendangelical and @piinetrees cause they’re really great people and have a very interesting shared world / over arching plot with their muses. I’m really glad to have met everyone I mentioned here.
RP  PET  PEEVES  /  DEALBREAKERS :  SEVERAL THINGS HONESTLY.
People who don’t read my rules is a big pet peeve of mine. And I can tell when someone either hasn’t read them or just does not give a fuck about them. In addition, when someone doesn’t read my bios. I know a lot of my muse bios aren’t complete, which is why I have the blurbs there, but when I DO have the full one up I can tell when people don’t read them. Again, either they don’t read them or they like to casually glance over a few very important details, leading me to the next one:
I get a lot of people who want romance with Damian, when he’s (gray)aromantic. There is a reason he is plotting only when it comes to ships and the reason is 99 times out of 100, he isn’t gonna like your muse back. He’s going to be a toxic, shitty, emotionally neglectful and kind of abusive boyfriend. Hell, he’s not even that great of a friend. Similarly, people also want to ship with Enoch. He’s not aromantic, but he’s the same in the toxicity and he’s not even attempting to improve himself like Damian is. I’ve got, like, 60 other muses to interact and ship with, so it confuses me when people want the worst ones that I’d like to be more selective with. ‘i can fix him’ does not work with my muses - it just enables them.
When i reject a plot idea and people take it as a challenge. ‘No’ does not mean ‘convince me’. ‘No’ means, ‘I’m not interested’, ‘the muses we’re using aren’t compatible for this’, or ‘this is against my rules’. No is a complete sentence and I shouldn’t have to explain over and over again why I said it.
Lack of consequences. Now, this is just my prefered way to run my blog, nothing wrong with not wanting realism in your writing... but I do want it in mine. If your muse provokes one of mine, gaslights them, tries to hit them, etc. depending on the muse... I’m sorry, but yours is probably going to get their ass beat if it’s someone like Damian or Serena. Now, if it’s someone like, say, Lucas or Suki, they’ll probably be the one who ends up beaten up but I digress. Consequences is what drives a plot. It’s what makes interactions interesting.
Trying to force interactions with incompatible muses. I’ve got 60, man, if one doesn’t work out, there is 59 more to pick from. Just let the interaction die and we can use a different combo.
Probably more but this is getting long
MUSE  PREFERENCES  FLUFF,    ANGST  OR  SMUT :   I find fluff kind of boring at times, and smut is not something I’m 100% comfortable with writing. I do like my angst, but too much can be draining. All in all, plot driven threads are my favorite.
PLOTS  OR  MEMES :   A mix of both? I like to have an idea of where to go, but flexibility in how to get there. plus, memes are really fun to answer when I’m not in the mood for my drafts.
LONG  OR  SHORT  REPLIES : It depends! Both? Neither?
BEST TIME TO WRITE :    When I should be sleeping ghfvghjf either RIGHT after waking up or when I’m tired as fuck at like 2 in the morning. One time I pulled an all nighter and i got like 20 drafts done.
ARE  YOU  LIKE  YOUR  MUSE(S) :  Edit: wow I forgot this section omg. It just depends on the muse. Thry all have something in common with me, but I try to make them as different as I can as well.
TAGGED  BY  :   i stole it from @piinetrees haha
TAGGING  : @yesfxckyxu @pvremichigan @ohfiendangelical @hhemeraa @smokes-and-bullets @batoushoujo @perennial-tenacity @wiildhearrted @nullificationofthevoid @stainedcarmine  @suizokukans @zhuangshii whoever else sees this and wants to steal it

March Wrap Up 2024--
Tumblr media
What a month that was. Did I read more than what I was supposed to? Yes. Am I mad about it? No. My goal for the year is to stay between 52 and 104 books read which means I need to read roughly 8 books per month (technically 8.6 or something like that) at the maximum. All this basically means is that I have to stick to reading 8 books next month. I blame the fact that my library hold came in 2 weeks early and I really didn't want to get back in line for it since it took so long to come in. Let's get to what I read and what I rated what I read.
Comics/Graphic Novels-- 1. Teen Titans: Raven by Kami Garcia and Gabriel Picolo--3.75 stars (original rating).
Novellas-- 1. Must Love Hockey by Sarina Bowen (Kindle)--3.75 stars.
2. The Dead Cat Tail Assassins by P. Djeli Clark (NetGalley)--4 stars.
Novels-- 1. No Coincidence by Rafat Kosik--1.75 stars.
2. The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu--3 stars.
3. The Stardust Thief by Chelsea Abdullah--3.75 stars.
4. Everyone on This Train Is a Suspect by Benjamin Stevenson (Library)--4 stars.
5. Ghost Station by S.A. Barnes (NetGalley)--3.25 stars.
6. The Foxglove King by Hannah F. Whitten--4.25 stars (original rating).
The average star rating for the month ended up being 3.5 stars which was such a surprise given that this is the month with my worst rated book of the year so far. Not too shabby though.
