Looking back at the Hercules television series starring Kevin Sorbo, and its spin-off Xena: Warrior Princess, it is difficult to pin down just when the shows were set. This is due to the Xenaverse (as the show's setting is commonly known) drawing off a number of historical and mythological sources.

The mythos of ancient times continues to live on in a variety of new forms. Series like American Gods mix the deities of dozens of cultures to tell new stories in a modern setting. Video games like the God of War franchise do the same thing, allowing players to interact with the monsters and gods of old. Yet despite the variety of new tales that have been told over the past 25 years, Hercules and Xena have retained their following.

Because of that legacy, many still wonder how the two series managed to build their shared universe and just when exactly it was meant to take place. It doesn't help matters that the show was intentionally anachronistic in its costuming, with Hercules sporting a sleeveless shirt and trousers rather than a Grecian tunic and the love goddess Aphrodite favoring modern lingerie whenever she appeared. Here's a breakdown of how the Xenaverse came into being and just when the events of the shows were meant to take place.

The ancient legends of Hercules were first reworked with a more modern aesthetic in a series of five movies starring Sorbo and produced as part of Universal Studios' Action Pack; a syndicated programming block of science-fiction, fantasy, and action films and television series. The films presented Hercules as a bastard son of Zeus, blessed with incredible strength, who traveled around Greece slaying horrible monsters, fighting warlords, and helping people in need. His main adversary was Hera, queen of the Olympian gods, who was not thrilled to have a continual reminder of her husband's infidelity traipsing around earning praise for his noble deeds. He also regularly contested with his half-brother Ares, who, as the god of war, drew power from the conflicts that Hercules stopped.

The films were largely accurate to the classic myths, though some did use Hercules in place of another legendary Greek hero or combine various myths. Hercules in the Underworld, for instance, combined the legends of Orpheus and Hercules, by having Hercules travel to the afterlife and striking a bargain with Hades to recapture the three-headed dog Cerberus in exchange for being allowed to return to Earth with his wife, Deianeira. Another film, Hercules in the Maze of the Minitour, placed Hercules in the titular labyrinth, seeking to slay the Minotaur. The movies proved popular enough to inspire a regular syndicated series, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, which opened with Hera killing Hercules' wife and children and Hercules resuming his life as a wandering hero.

Hercules: The Legendary Journeys ran for 6 seasons and 111 episodes, but it is best remembered today for the hero whose series spun out of it; Xena: Warrior Princess. Played by Lucy Lawless, Xena was introduced as a merciless warlord in "The Warrior Princess," the 9th episode of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys Season 1. Xena had plotted to kill Hercules so that no one could oppose her campaign to conquer Arcadia and she was meant to die after her third appearance, finding redemption in death after her men defied her order not to kill non-combatants. However, Lawless proved so popular with the production team and with fans that the producers came up with a new plan for Xena.

Premiering in the fall of 1995 alongside Hercules: The Legendary Journeys Season 2, Xena: Warrior Princess quickly eclipsed the show that inspired it. The new series centered on Xena as she traveled the world with aspiring bard Gabrielle, seeking redemption for her evil past. In expanding its setting and establishing Xena's history before encountering Hercules, Xena: Warrior Princess became equal parts historical epic and fantasy. This increased scope was part of the reason for Xena's longevity and part of why it remains a cult classic to this day.

Xena was established as having a long rivalry with Julius Caesar (played by a young Karl Urban) and Caesar was one of the series' main antagonists until his death in the Season 4 finale, "The Ides of March." This established a rough chronology for when both series took place, with Caesar having been assassinated in 44 BC. It should be noted, however, that neither show was ever concerned with historical accuracy, even after they began utilizing notable historical figures. For instance, one episode of Xena: Warrior Princess Season 6 pitted Xena and Gabrielle against a divinely empowered Caligula, who was depicted as the Emperor of Rome some 25 years after Julius Caesar's death. In our reality, Caligula did not become Emperor until 37 AD. The show also made references to the Lao Dynasty and Ming Dynasty of China, which would not come to exist until many centuries after the fall of Rome.

Beyond utilizing real-world historical figures, Xena: Warrior Princess also began to utilize mythology from outside the era of Classical Greece. Hercules: The Legendary Journeys followed suit, with both series going on to tackle Norse mythology, bringing characters like Odin and Thor into play. In the episode "Norse by Norsewest," Hercules took the place of the god Höðr in being manipulated by Loki into accidentally killing Balder with a dart made of mistletoe and setting up the start of Ragnarok. Xena: Warrior Princess reworked Xena into the Ring Cycle, making Xena into both a contemporary of the valkyrie Brunhilda and the Dane hero Beowulf. Xena was also revealed to have had traveled to Asia and received training as a samurai, albeit in armor that was not historically accurate and protected very little.

The timelines of Hercules and Xena: Warrior Princess line up quite well, with both series having shared supporting casts and crossed-over frequently. Ironically, the show had more problems in keeping its characters consistent between shows than in keeping its timeline cohesive. To give one example, the god Odin was portrayed as a devout family man in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, being loyal to his wife, Frigga, loving towards his children, and deeply concerned about the fate of humanity. By contrast, the Odin of Xena: Warrior Princess, was a jealous warrior king, who indulged himself with his Valkyries and cared little for the problems of Man. While a case can be made for both portrayals based on the classic Norse myths, neither show attempted to reconcile the two takes. Given that, and the aforementioned problems with nailing down when the shows took place outside of Caesar's death, it is best to think of the stories of Hercules and Xena as ripping yarns told around the fire, enjoyed as individual stories independent of one another.

Finally finished! So here is the first chapter of a fanfic I'm writing. I have it all in my head, but it will take long I guess XD It's the story of les Amis, how they meet, one by one, how they form the group and all their adventures: Hernani, the '30 Revolution, theirs deaths... Well, my headcanons of everything Hugo let to our imagination.

I'm so so sorry that it's in Spanish. I've felt uncapable of writing it in English. It was the initial idea, I swear, I mean, I wanted to write it in Spanish cause it's more easier for me, and then traduce it. But the fanfic came out so long and complicated, more than I expected, and in the end, I felt unable to traduce it cause I'm so bad in English. And it really hurts me cause I'm really fond of how it turned out. Maybe that's why I don't dare to traduce it cause I know I will completly ruin it.

But I will try to make a little resume of the story so you can understand the drawings:

So, as you might have noticed this is the story of how Enjolras and Combeferre meet when they are kids. I've decided to name Enjolras Gabriel, and Combeferre, Antoine. The chapter is titled "Apple pie" (blame Shoujo Cosette).

The format of the story is supposed to be a diary that Combeferre has been writing and then it's found in the barricade. But since is quite difficult to explain everything trhough a diary, I've compagined it with the explanation of an omniscent narrator. So the letters in cursive are the diary, and the normal ones are the narration by me.

At the beggining I've putted a little manifest that is supposed to be written and firmed by les Amis when they are in the barricade. And then Combeferre (Antoine) begins explaining the story.

I'm sorry it will be so summarized and messy but I don't know how to begin with. The idea is that Combeferre is one of the sons of a family of humble peasants. He have lots of brothers, like... lots (two older brothers, two twin sisters and a drooling baby). But among all of them, he is the only one that cares about the teachings of his mother. His mother is a healer and teaches him all about plants and all of this. He is also very fond of a book of Linnaeus that her father gave to her mother and which she nearly burned, cause she doesn't believe in the writted knowledge.

The case is that one day that Antoine is in the forest searching a plant for her mother, he sees Enjolras (Gabriel) who is walking alone, and in a moment of social awkwardness, when he is trying to introduce himself, he makes Enjolras fall and twist his ankle. He brings him to his home so her mother can cure him, and before the poor boy can react, he is invated to lunch with Combeferre's family. And his brothers are totally excited and incontrollable and it's quite funny. The dessert is an apple pie.

Before mister Combeferre brings Enjolras to his home, since Antoine feels culpable cause this boy will have to repose during a lot of days and he will provably be bored, he gives him his book of Linnaeus. Although Enjolras has been quite arrogant at first, he realizes that ‘Ferre is peculiar and special.

Then I mix parts from the point of view of Enjolras, and from the point of view of Combeferre, to explain the past of Gabriel, and who he is, and all the story and also a bit of the Revolution thing (the situation in France in that moment and how people perceive it- mister Combeferre is sick of revolutionaries xd). It is supposed to be explained by parts, so there is a little of mistery and all. I apologize if there are any historical mistakes, I’ve tried my best. But in resume, Gabriel was the son of a liberal printer (it's called this, right? I mean, a man who publish newspapers, and propaganda and all that). I took the idea from somewhere in the fandom, I can't remember exactly where, but I know it's an extended headcanon and I really like it. The original idea that I had was too similar to Marius, so I changed it cause the idea of the printer has more sense to the story. So he was a young printer, quite popular, who had a newspaper called “Abaissé” (you see what I’ve done here ¿right? XD). But during the Restoration, his house was attacked by a band of “verdets”, you know, these ultra-royalist groups, leaded by the future Charles X, who protagonized massacres and arrests of republicans and bonapartists. So there is a whole dramatic scene where Gabriel (Enjolras) sees how they took his father away, and there is a moment where his father looks at him, but the kid is terrorized and instead of doing anything he hides. There is the trauma. I wanna traumatize Enjolras at any cost. Then Enjolras and his mother were helped by a rich chevalier, friend of Enjolras’ father, named Leroy, who marries her and takes they two to his country mansion. He is the possessor of the lands that Combeferre’s fathers cultivate. He was all involved in the Revolution thing (at the beginning, he was a poor chevalier, so he had to study laws in Paris where he made friend between the intellectuality of the moment; then he took adventatge of his position to get rich). The case is that Enjolras is very traumatized, and depressed, and hates Leroy, and his new house, and hates everything, and is obsessed with the memory of what happened...

But he returns the book to Combeferre. And in compensation he brings him another book, “Julius Caesar” by William Shakespeare (you see what I did here also XD). Since then he spends all days in Antoine’s house. Her mother cook apple pies cause Enjolras really loves them, and she cares about him like a son cause she is a lovely woman. Although Combeferre’s brothers wanna play with them, they always scape and went to their favorite place: the apple trees that are near the house. And there they read. Enjolras brings every day books that he steal from Leroy’s bibliotheque, and someones are "prohibited", cause how I’ve said, Leroy was initially involved in all the Revolution thing. And these books begin to introduce some ideas, quite vagues at first, to the two kids. Also is here where Combeferre becomes so passionate of reading and learning, and he realizes of the importance of education (cause he felt an ignorant before) and you know XD.

I spend I don’t know how many pages describing these moments, how they read, what they read, how they become friends, how Enjolras let Combeferre approach him… There is a part, where I insist specially, that is when they read the epic poem “Paradise Lost” by John Milton. Have you read it? In this poem, he talks about the fallen angels, the demons, as revolutionaries who fighted for freedom against the tyranny that was in Heavens, so they were degradated and humilliated. But they also intended to free huamity. I've dedicated a lot of text considering about all the symbolism that is in the apple, related with the knowledge and intelligence; and the revolutionary fallen angels… Well, I know it’s a silliness, but I like to lose time in these things XD The case is that this poem cause a little clash between the two friends.

One day Enjolras doesn't go to his home, so Combeferre worries and goes to the mansion to know if he is ok (he puts one piece of apple pie in his pocket). There he sees how Enjolras’ mother and Leroy are arguing cause of these books that he shows to his son (cause Enjolras’ mother is very worried and doesn't want Gabriel to end like his father). Gabriel has scaped, so Antoine begins searching for him and in the end he finds him crying next to a river. He comfort his friend, and gives him the piece of pie, and they talk (Combeferre scolds him a little bit), and Enjolras makes him swear that, when they are older, he will accompany him to Paris.

In the end I explain the evolution of the two characters and how they've become how they are when they arrive in Paris.

I repeat I'm so angry with myself for not being capable of traduce it. But I really hope the drawings have been quite undertandable with this little explanation, and that you like them... ^^

First Pinoy app nominated as global finalist to the NASA Space Apps Challenge

MANILA, Philippines -- Among the 2,729 teams in 200 locations all over the world who participated in the NASA Space Apps Challenge, an app made by Filipino innovators was nominated first time by NASA scientists and experts to become a finalist at the global level. Altogether, they will join the top 25 in competing for the six winners of the biggest hackathon in the universe.

The winning app seeking to communicate scientific data to fishermen even without Internet connection was made by IT professionals Revbrain G. Martin, Marie Jeddah Legaspi, and Julius Czar Torreda from team iNON, which stands for "It's now or never." Named ISDApp, from the Tagalog word "isda" meaning fish, it sends useful information to fishermen such as real-time weather, sunrise and sunset, wind speed, and cloud coverage to plan their fishing activities in catching more fish using the NASA GLOBE Observer app, a data collection from citizen scientists around the world used in concert with NASA satellite data to identify or communicate information, and educating the public about planet Earth. Fishermen will receive SMS notifications from the Amazon Web Services gateway while local government officials would manage their details using a smartphone app connected to the cloud. NASA scientists and experts consider this fisherfolk app made by Pinoys as one of the solutions "with the most potential to improve life on Earth or in the universe," therefore nominated as global finalist for Galactic Impact.

The fishermen app won in the local level on Friday-Sunday, October 19-21, 2018 at De La Salle University, Malate, Manila, Philippines, in collaboration with the Embassy of the United States of America to the Philippines and PLDT. US Embassy deputy chief of mission John C. Law, PLDT Enterprise Core Business Research and Development head Leandro T. Santos, DOST-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development deputy executive director Engr. Raul C. Sabularse, Department of Information and Communications Technology senior planning officer Yvette M. Cabrera, and Animo Labs executive director Federico C. Gonzalez served as jurors at the local level.

An emergency checklist kit app designed for disaster preparedness also won at the local level developed by students Jeorge Loui P. Delfin, Bluen Ginez, Samuel Jose, Rainier G. Narboneta, and Eugenio Emmanuel A. Araullo. Other projects and solutions developed during the hackathon are games using images from the Hubble Space Telescope, augmented reality mobile app to tell a story of the changes in the Arctic and Antarctic ice, artificial intelligence app helping scientists confirm the habitability of exoplanets, and story-based game using NASA Earth imagery. They joined together with teams of coders, scientists, developers, designers, storytellers, makers, builders, technologists, thinkers, entrepreneurs, and everyone around the globe working together in a 48-hour sprint to develop solutions to some of the most pressing challenges on Earth and in space, using NASA resources and data.

A day-long data bootcamp was held to learn new concepts, strategies and skills from keynote speakers, panelists, and mentors. Michael Carroll from Urban Engine in Huntsville, AL and NASA Earth Science Division senior advisor Dr. Patricia Jacobberger introduced Space Apps through a virtual talk while NASA astronaut Drew Feustel, orbiting aboard the International Space Station welcomed everyone to the event. US Embassy science fellow Dr. Anondo Mukherjee and US Fulbright fellow Sarah Marie Hartman gave an online lecture about the Earth's environment. DOST-Advanced Science and Technology Institute acting director Dr. Joel Joseph S. Marciano, Jr. and PHL-Microsat program leader Dr. Marc Caesar R. Talampas discussed microsatellite development and advanced technologies in the Philippines.

Several mentors coming from different backgrounds such as YSEALI alumni Ryan Madrid and Malcolm Flores, De La Salle University professors Jordan Aiko P. Deja and Neil Patrick A. Del Gallego, PHL-Microsat engineers Ariston N. Gonzalez, Lorenzo Sabug, Jr., Benjamin Joseph D. Jiao, and Carlo D. Department of Information and Communications Technology undersecretary Monchito B. Ibrahim gave an inspiring message to the participants. IdeaSpace and Animo Labs looked upon promising projects and solutions that might have a business potential.

During the hackathon period, teams are expected to find solutions to themed challenges put forth by NASA. They work together with the rest of the world on hackathon weekend to devise creative and innovative solutions to these challenges. Projects do not have to be apps and anyone does not need to become a computer programmer to participate. Participants collaborate to build anything — from open-source software, hardware, data visualizations, and citizen science platforms, to videos, art, and other communications solutions — aimed at addressing global challenges. The overarching theme of the 2018 challenges is "Earth and Space," underscoring the connections between major challenges, and the potential solutions to them, both on Earth and in space. The 2018 mainstage Space Apps event was hosted by Urban Engine in the US Space and Rocket Center at Huntsville, AL, also known as "The Rocket City."

Since its inception in 2012, the International Space Apps Challenge has become the world’s largest global hackathon, engaging thousands of global citizens to collaborate in building innovative solutions to complex challenges using NASA’s open data. Hackathons are technology development marathons that draw on the talents and initiative of bright-minded people. Space Apps inspires local innovation communities to convene, cooperate, and create.

The 2018 hackathon was organized by Matt T. Keener, Jeanie M. Duwan, Randolf D. Mariano, and Xavier E. Lara from the American Spaces Philippines of the US Embassy and Kai Shan L. Fernandez, Christine M. Abrigo, Donna Lyn G. Labangon,  Kevin Anthony Y. Kaw, and Dr. Rafael A. Cabredo from De La Salle University. Another hackathon was organized at Makati-Bonifacio Global City by Womensphere. In the past years, Tzar C. Umang brought Space Apps in Dagupan, Pangasinan on 2016 while Art Polo Gabriel III, Wilson Censon, and Tito Mari Francis Escaño organized one in PLDT InnoLab in Mandaluyong, Metro Manila. De La Salle - College of Saint Benilde also hosted Space Apps on 2017 by Dr. Edward M. Moises, Norman Lee, and Catherine Valdellon-Mojado.

Lead organizer Michael Lance M. Domagas is very thankful that NASA scientists and experts recognized the skills and talents of Filipinos in building projects and open-source solutions that address real-world problems, on Earth and in space, and hoping that Filipinos would win the competition.
