Post-Apocalypse + Soulmate AU ; requested by @burr-burr!
When Danny was a kid, he used to imagine how the world would end. It was never a zombie apocalypse or the fallout of a nuclear war, but the death of the sun, the expansion of their star in death that would swallow their planet whole, leaving no survivors.
It would have been nicer than the post-apocalyptic world he stands in now, knowing that it’s his fault the world has ended.
He’s still struggling to wrap his head around it. To understand that all of this is his fault because he cheated on one test, desperate to pass after being unable to study for it with how exhausting and time consuming fighting ghosts is. Everywhere he looks, there’s more destruction. His own home is rubble, with only the partially untouched Ops Center remaining to let him know that this is where he once lived.
The rest of Amity Park is in worse shape. Buildings are hollowed out, the skeletons of their foundations visible, if they still remain standing. Most homes have been burned to the ground, leaving blackened corners of walls and nothing else. The roads are cracked and difficult to walk through, as if an earthquake tore through the city. Cars are scattered along the road, overturned or left abandoned, doors still open.
Danny has yet to find any bodies. He doesn’t know if that’s a good sign or not.
He’s only caught a few glimpses of his future self, the cause of all this, and can’t bring himself to chase after that monster. He feels sick to his stomach knowing what he’ll become.
That monster has to be stopped. The world has already ended, but that doesn’t mean his future self can be allowed to go on like this. If there are any survivors, they need protection. They need to know they’ll be safe to try to start rebuilding, and that can only happen if his future self is dead.
Danny knows what he has to do; he has a responsibility to protect what little remains of Amity Park, and to do that, he needs to kill himself.
But his head it spinning from the horror of the situation and his throat is tightening up the way it only does when he’s about to have a panic attack.
He needs to stop his future self, but he also can’t stay another second in the ruins of Amity Park without destroying himself.
The guilt sits heavy in his chest as he goes ghost and takes to the sky, flying blindly towards the setting sun. Danny doesn’t know where he’s going, and he doesn’t really care. He just needs to get away for a bit, until he can calm down and put together a plan of attack so he can take out his future self in one go.
He just…
He never thought he’d be a monster. But here they are.
Flying away from Amity Park reveals the truly harrowing extent to which this world has suffered under his future self’s hands. There are no intact cities or towns. Roads are broken beyond repair, highways littered with empty cars, most bridges crumbling into the rivers below them, and everything is covered in overgrowth. All signs of humanity’s careful cultivation of the world has been erased. The earth takes back what humans took from it, covering everything in green.
There is no movement. No people. Barely any birds flying beneath him.
What remains of the world is silence.
Danny is terrified that there’s no one left. That his future self has so thoroughly destroyed the earth that no human survivors remain.
That gives his guidance, some idea of where to go: a big city. Any big city, really.
He flies lower, searching for some sort of landmark, or a sign that will tell him where he’s going. A rusted over green sign farther down the road tells him that he’s 50 miles from Gotham.
Oh, Danny thinks, Maybe Batman can help me.
If anyone could survive the end of the world, it would be the superheroes, right? If anyone stands a chance at defeating his future self, it would be a superhero. Superman might have been a better choice, but Metropolis is the opposite direction and multiple states away; Danny’s not sure he can make it before his future self catches wind of him and hunts him down.
Danny has no doubt about what would happen to him if he’s caught; there’s a reason he hasn’t seen any ghosts around, after all.
Gotham is a city of secrets and rumors. What little he’s heard of it is baffling and, frankly, insane. There’s no city in the country like it and Gothamites prefer it that way, stubbornly loving the home that will kill them. For all the manmade horrors they survive on the daily, they would be more prepared for the end of the world than anyone else.
Gotham may be another casualty of his future self’s destruction, but it also offers him hope.
Danny follows the broken road towards Gotham, pushing himself to fly faster than he ever has before. What should have been a half hour flight is completed in fifteen minutes.
As soon as the towering buildings of Gotham, dark and semi destroyed, come into view, Danny drops from the sky and returns to human form. The strain from pushing himself has exhausted him and he feels it like an ache in his chest, his heart twisting and trying to burst from how hard it’s beating.
He collapses to his hands and knees and gasps for breath on the outskirts of Gotham.
It takes a good few minutes to calm down and breathe normally, then another to gather his strength to stand up and begin walking.
The world is eerily quiet as he enters the city, feeling the chill fall upon him as he is consumed by the shadows of tall buildings. It’s much more intact that Amity Park, but there’s no denying the destruction that still surrounds him. Buildings are empty and worn down, decaying and slowly being consumed by new growth. Burnt out husks of overturned cars fill the street, leaving Danny to carefully pick his way around them, unable to walk in a straight line.
He feels like the only person in the world. He feels like he’s being watched by a hungry eyes.
Danny shivers and walks faster.
The deeper he goes into the city, the more he starts to hope that he’s not alone in this world. There’s small signs of life: the smell of smoke, recently burned, certain streets cleaned up, makeshift walls constructed from rubble to block access to certain areas of each block.
He swears he can see people move above his head, but anytime he looks up, the windows of every building are empty.
“Batman,” he whispers to himself, “I just need to find Batman.”
He turns a corner and continues walking. Apartment buildings give way to stores and businesses, all with their windows broken and nothing on the shelves. Then the buildings end abruptly and he’s left staring at an overgrown park that resembles a jungle more than it does a part of the city.
The scent of something sweet lingers in the air. Fruit, perhaps, or flowers.
If he was left in the aftermath of an apocalypse, he would go to where he could find growing food. If there’s anyone left in Gotham, he’s willing to bet they’re in here, surviving off of what food can be grown in the confines of the park.
Danny crosses the road and takes three steps onto the grass before someone appears beside him and points an electrified baton at him.
“Who are you?” they demand, eyes hidden behind a cracked helmet, but the bottom half of their face is visible, revealing scars crossing on dark skin.
Danny takes a step back, eyeing the electric baton warily, and lifts his hands to show he means no harm. “Danny. I came from out of town. I was hoping to find people here.”
“You don’t look like you’ve been traveling.”
His clothes are clean and intact and he has none of the world-weariness that weighs down this Gothamite. Danny winces, and says, “My situation is kinda complicated. But I did just get here. I’m looking for help, actually. Do you know where I could find Batman?”
There’s a long moment of tense silence, then he hears a quiet sigh and the helmet comes off. An exhausted looking man looks at him with one blind eye, turned a milky white, and his voice is low and stricken as he says, “Batman’s dead. But maybe I can help you.”
“Batman’s dead?!” Danny repeats, shocked.
“Yeah. Sacrificed himself in one of the last times Phantom attacked Gotham. Got me and Nightwing out of that encounter alive. We’re really the only heroes left in Gotham, not that there’s much need anymore with everyone trying to survive.”
Phantom killed Batman. His future self killed Batman.
Danny feels sick to his stomach.
“Oh,” he manages to say.
The man’s expression softens. “Don’t worry, we’ll help you as much as we can. Why don’t you come on in? Ivy can get you some food if you’re hungry.”
Danny nods numbly as he follows the man deeper into the park. He walks with ease, taking paths that only become visible when he walks them, leaving Danny to follow close behind. It takes some time before he realizes that the plants are moving out of their way just enough that they don’t trip, and when he looks back, the path is covered again, hidden from sight.
He’s taken to the heart of the forest, where the trees shift to the side to reveal a large encampment of survivors all living together. Beds are strung up as hammocks between trees and rope ladders dangle from branches to help people move up and down. The ground is full of small fire pits, a few in use to make make food, and sections in the back full of vegetable and herb patches, separated by berry bushes.
The people here all look tired and worn down, but they still smile and speak in light voices, adjusted to a new life after surviving so much horror and destruction. He even spots a few people using powers, or just looking different, including one large man who looks like a crocodile.
“Pick up another stray?” a raspy voice asks, humor lighting the tone. They both turn to see a woman with long red hair and a green tint to her skin be lowered to the ground by a vine. She’s also heavily scarred and her right arm is completely gone, replaced by a wooden limb covered in moss that moves as if it’s always been a part of her body.
“Hey Ivy,” the man greets, “I don’t think this one is staying. He came to Gotham looking for Batman.”
The words make Ivy’s gaze sharpen, and Danny feels a trickle of dread go down his spine. She’s dangerous and standing before her feels as if he’s in the mouth of a hungry beast.
“Is that so,” she says, voice flat. “How interesting. I’ll let you two talk somewhere more private.” Her gaze flicks to the side, and when Danny turns to look, he can see some of the people in the encampment observing them warily, bodies tense and poised to either flee or attack.
Ivy turns and the plants part for her. Danny waits for the man to begin walking before he follows, trying not to feel trapped as the plants close the path behind him. She takes them to a small pond full of water lilies, gives the man a careful look, then leaves, swallowed up by the plants.
“Is everything okay?” Danny asks hesitantly. “I didn’t mean to cause any trouble.”
“Nah, you’re good,” the man replies, “It’s just that people don’t trust me much.”
“Why? You’ve been really nice.”
The man shrugs. “My soulmate is Phantom. He’s the one responsible for doing all this and killing almost everyone we love. I didn’t know until the first time I fought him, but they hate anything to do with Phantom, including me.”
Danny’s heart stutters in his chest. This is his soulmate.
Most people don’t subscribe to the belief that they’re meant to be with their soulmate. Meeting your soulmate is rare enough that most people don’t try, and plenty of people have spoken of how important it is to have a variety of relationships, to not close yourself off for the slightest chance of meeting your soulmate.
Danny never looked for his; he didn’t want to subject them to his parents, and then he became a halfa and gave up on all dreams of having a normal life or any relationship with someone who didn’t know he was Phantom.
And now he’s here, in a ruined future, standing before his soulmate who understandably hates him for destroying the world.
“You’re Phantom’s soulmate,” Danny breathes. His hands are shaking. He wants to cry.
The man sighs. “Yeah. I am. Not that it’s stopped him from trying to kill me. Don’t worry, kid, I’m not working with him. I swear.”
“He’s your soulmate and he hurt you.”
“He hurt everyone,” he says, then gestures at his blind eye. “This is barely a thing compared to what he did to other heroes.”
Danny can’t find the words to expression his horror at seeing the damage he did to his own soulmate. His future self is heartless and cruel and bloodthirsty. He has to be stopped.
He doesn’t want to kill his soulmate.
“I came here for Batman,” Danny says, “Because I thought he could help me stop Phantom.”
“That’s rough, kid. Batman couldn’t beat Phantom. I don’t think anyone can. We’ve tried, but most heroes are dead and we can’t just go out there and risk the lives of everyone here. We gotta focus on survival, not revenge.”
“I have to stop Phantom.”
“Sorry kid, but that’s a terrible idea. Don’t go out there trying to be a hero. You can stay here, alright? Ivy will get you set up and the others will help you settle in.”
Danny takes a step back and shakes his head. “No. I have to stop him. It has to be me.”
“And why is that?”
“Because I’m Phantom,” Danny whispers.
The man immediately reaches for his electric batons again, taking a step back. “Not funny, kid,” he says with a tense voice.
“I’m not joking. I am Phantom, just from the past. I’m not supposed to be here.”
“You’re Phantom?” the man repeats. “You. You’re just a kid, and you’re going to destroy the world one day?”
“I don’t want this to happen! That’s why I need to go back, so I can stop the event that will set me down this path. And to go back, I need to defeat the Phantom that exists here.”
“He’ll kill you, kid.”
“That still solves the problem, doesn’t it? If I die here, then he’ll never live long enough to destroy the world. He’ll die too.”
The man stares at him with cold eyes, then turns away, dropping his hands away from the batons. “Don’t turn this into a suicide mission, kid,” he says. “The Phantom who’s here isn’t you. You don’t have to pay for his crimes. Just… stay here and I’ll go fight Phantom.”
“He already hurt you,” Danny says.
“What’s a little more hurt? I can handle it.”
“No,” Danny says firmly. He shoves away the fear and hurt in his heart and finds his strength in determination. No more running away. No more hiding.
The timeline should not exist. He can’t hesitate at the thought of erasing this version of his soulmate from existence; he’s tired and injured and an outcast in the only community that still exists in Gotham. He deserves better. Everyone here does.
And to give them a better life, Danny needs to stop this one from ever happening.
“This is my future. It’s my responsibility. I’ll stop it and make sure this never happens. And… I’m sorry for everything I did.”
“It’s not your fault, Danny. You’re not this version of Phantom.”
That’s not at all true, since Danny’s actions lead to the end of the world, but he’s not going to argue when he’s preparing to fight a stronger, more ruthless version of himself. He takes a deep breath, then goes ghost and floats into the air.
“Before I go,” he begins, hesitantly, “What’s your name? Since you’re apparently my soulmate.”
The man smiles sadly and answers, “Duke. If we ever meet in your time, tell that version of me to look for my mom’s favorite book.”
It’s an odd request, but if it’s important enough to be asked for, then Danny will do it. “Your mom’s favorite book,” he repeats, “Got it.”
“Take care, Danny. Good luck out there.”
Danny nods and takes one last look at his soulmate, older and worn down, stubbornly getting through each long day, and swears to make things better.
Then he flies off, ready to fight his future self and make things right again.
. . .
He thinks of his soulmate for years after he’s back in the present. The timeline where his future self exists is gone and the world is safe, but he still remembers the pain he caused Duke.
When the time comes to apply to universities, Danny sets his sights on Gotham. His parents take him on a trip during spring break to tour the campus, and it’s after the tour, as he wanders around on his own, that he bumps into a student walking out of a building.
“Sorry,” they both say at the same time, reaching for each other to help each other keep their balance.
As soon as their hands meet, it’s as if lightning runs through him. From the look on the other guy’s face, he felt it to.
This is his soulmate.
“Duke,” Danny says, amazed and disbelieving all at once. And the request crosses his mind, something he wondered about almost every night since he returned to his time. “Look for your mom’s favorite book.”
“How—?”
“I met you in the future. You asked me to take back a message for the you that’s here. So: look for your mom’s favorite book. What does that mean, by the way? I never asked.”
Duke blinks, then slowly retracts his hands from Danny’s. “My mom’s favorite book was a hand bound journal from my dad. They were soulmates and he wrote about their first year in a relationship together. It’s full of pictures, and she loved it more than anything. That message is to remind me to have faith in soulmates, to believe that something good can happen to me.”
“Oh! That’s… wow, sorry, I didn’t mean to pry into something so personal.”
Duke shrugs. “It’s fine. I needed the reminder. I would have already run away by now if you didn’t say that. You already know my name, but I think now’s a good time to introduce ourselves.”
“Right!” Danny says, flustered. He sticks his hand out, which Duke shakes with an amused smile. “I’m Danny. Fenton. I’m coming here next semester.”
“Duke Thomas. I’m a freshman here and I’d really love to get your number.”
He’s not hitting on Danny, not really, but it still makes him blush. The way Duke looks at him is full of light and laughter, so different from the exhausted and wary way he looked in the future now rewritten.
This is what the future version of himself tried to kill. He doesn’t understand how anyone could ever hurt Duke when he’s so full of life.
But he’s safe now. Everyone is; Danny changed the future and what lies ahead is wholly unknown to him.
The world is safe and full of promise.
No matter what comes, Danny is sure he and Duke are going to be just fine.

(Also got to go see a friend before she flies back to Newfoundland, climb another waterfall in 3” platforms, and do a photoshoot at said waterfall! Busy weeeeeeeek!)
So here is this week’s belated WIP Wednesday, with some more good news for y’all! Wonder Woman is here to save the day!

Well You Did Get Down On One Knee part iii
There was not a single thing on Earth or the Watchtower that he wanted less than to stop and talk to John Fucking Constantine and Diana after the meeting.
To be completely fair, Constantine clearly didn’t want to have that conversation any more either; Bruce had not been wrong about how well the magician would take the news that the United States had declared war on an entire dimension.
He was visibly green, had actually ground an unlit cigarette into a grainy mess against the table in lieu of lighting up, and looked about ready to lick up the tobacco.
Diana did not look happy either, but she never had. Her face was as stony and grave as Bruce had ever seen it, concern writ large even as she caught his eye.
The sure knowledge that her lasso would follow if he tried to leave was the only thing that kept him from ignoring her.
But since the only thing he wanted in the world at this moment was to have his son in his arms, and there was no chance of that happening until they were in the same dimension once more…
Bruce shot a quick, questioning look at Clark as the traitor made his way to the exit along with the rest of the Justice League. The Kryptonian at least had the grace to look a little guilty as he shook his head, stepping quickly out the door.
Wonder Woman hadn’t specifically told everyone else to get the fuck out. She had simply molded herself into an immovable force, concluded the meeting, and instructed Bruce alone to remain and discuss these… complications.
Bruce considered making an argument for Superman’s inclusion. They were the original three, and they’d probably need at least his and Aquaman’s help to handle the diplomatic situation.
Possibly the Oa, and Bruce was quite sure Green Lantern wasn’t looking forward to that possibility any more than he was. Hal Jordan talked a good game, always far too flippant, but he’d been pale enough by the end of the lecture that his suit made him look frankly unwell.
Unpleasant times would be in all of their futures it seemed. It was no real comfort as he slipped into a seat across from Wonder Woman and the slumped form of John Constantine.
The magician didn’t even look up, but clearly noticed.
“Didn’t fuckin’ think anyone’d fuck this up worse’n you, Bats,” he groaned, face still pressed into the table.
Bruce grunted, uninterested in his judgement.
“There are new complications we should focus on.” A vain hope, and one Diana instantly crushed.
“One that makes the contents of our discussion all the more vital,” she corrected sharply, piercing blue eyes narrowed as she watched his face. “It seems we have already caused unintentional offence.”
Which was an extremely light way to phrase the declared genocide, but Bruce didn’t bother arguing that position. Not when Constantine would do it for him.
But the mage just let out a long, hearty groan.
“Offence. Yeah. Maybe if we saw off the United States and toss it through a portal the rest of us will be fine,” he snarked, raising his head just enough to bang it off the table. Repeatedly.
By the third bang Diana gripped the back of his head, holding him in place against the table.
“Whatever the situation,” she growled, her tone daring either of them to comment, “we must deal with it as it is. You believe we would have noticed any countermeasures from the former Ghost King?”
She released her grip a moment later, and Constantine rolled his head just enough to glare at her through one eye.
“Pariah Dark? Sister, it wouldn’ta been a single town bein’ pulled off the map. We’d have lost the continent, and probably the world. You wouldn’t miss it,” he added with a bitter laugh, clearly considering banging his head off the table again.
Diana placed a hand on the table. Constantine set his head back down gently.
“And the new king?” She prodded, all icy control.
Bruce had to admit, even he felt calmer watching her.
He knew all the follies and foibles of gods, had no delusions about the limits of her power. He also knew her strengths. Her wisdom. Her ability to cut through complex issues with sword or words.
Whatever he missed, she was removed enough from this mess to catch.
Constantine shrugged, still not rising.
“No fuckin’ clue. All I know is they’re better’n Pariah, which is the lowest damn bar I ever saw. They call them Balance, and we’re not gonna fuckin’ like when the scales come due.”
Bruce’s brows furrowed. What could be a sufficient counterweight for demanding a whole people be hunted and experimented on until extinction?
The dead always vastly outnumbered the living.
Diana cut across his thoughts, her tone as sharp as her blade.
“So you believe we’d notice.”
Constantine sighed heavily and flopped back in his seat hard enough that he nearly toppled over. Diana steadied the chair with one hand, eyebrow rising archly.
Constantine stopped flailing, went to fold his arms, and instead stuffed his hands in his pockets.
“Probably’d be pretty hard to miss too,” he agreed gruffly. Diana nodded, having received the answer she wanted, and interlaced her fingers.
“Then we have time to rectify matters before word reaches his ears.” She paused, brow furrowing as she recounted John’s words. “Do we not know if the King is a man?”
Constantine shrugged again, pulling something unidentifiable from his pocket before hastily shoving it back in, coming out again with a lighter. He spun it between his fingers, eyes fixed on the metal lid.
“Nah. “King” is just a loose translation to living tongues, for what yer used to. Easier to say than “Supreme High Ruler, Core of the Realms”. Not even likely that they were ever human; not even the Ancients could take Pariah solo to take the crown, so a human ghost wouldn’t stand a chance.”
Huffing out a mighty breath, Constantine looked from the lighter to Bruce, his gaze somehow immeasurably more tired. Bruce had imagined that talking about Amity Park made the man look ancient.
He looked haggard enough to be an ancient ghost himself now.
Raising his other hand, he began counting off points on his fingers.
“We know they’re young. Everything agrees on that. Could be any time in the past few centuries, but it’s still a timeline. We know they’re tougher’n Hell and all its demons put together, cuz they put Pariah down single handed. Had to to get the throne. Might not have Ended him, the Casket of Eternal Slumber’s not turned up looking for a new occupant.”
The magician stared at his two fingers for a moment, then sighed and raised a third.
“And we know ghosts like them. They’re less scared, though most of ‘em never knew shit about Pariah. Didn’t even react to him waking, which had to happen for the change in power. That or it all went down too fast for the shockwaves to reach us here; not bloody likely. Wouldn’t take more than a day, and ghosts fight for decades on a whim.”
He hesitated for a moment, considering that last finger. Finally he sighed and shook his head.
“Can’t rule it out though. Pariah waking up’d be as much an emergency for them as it’d be for us, putting his ass back down is an all hands on deck situation on either side of the veil. If this new king is Balance, Pariah’d be their opposite,” he finished gruffly, glaring at all three digits before stuffing both hands into his pockets.
Bruce nodded, drawing a deep, calming breath in through his nose and then out through his mouth. Even this much discussion had something itching in the back of his mind, a building tension that he had to Get Away.
He was in control of it though. Could tell the difference between his own unease and the burning ember of the oath.
Turn and run right away his ass. Magic could never hold out against cool, calm logic.
“And this new king, Balance, has stamped a damn mark on Jason.”
And his breath hitched.
Sharp, white hot panic flared behind his eyes, every muscle clenching with the effort of not leaping straight from the table. The only reason he didn’t was because he had no idea where to go.
What would he even do? Run to Jason’s side? The boy was in another dimension, far beyond Bruce’s reach.
Again.
He was losing Jason again. Losing him to this Ghost King, this Balance, this-
Diana’s hand clamped firmly over his, the Amazon’s grip immovable steel. Bruce felt his bones grinding together before he even noticed he’d stopped breathing, before he managed to look up enough to meet her eyes.
Stern, determined, brilliant blue locked with his. Her grip tightened a little further, the ribbing on his gloves creaking with the pressure.
She wouldn’t break them… probably. They were designed to hold up against any of the supers the League dealt with. Prolonged contact was another thing entirely though.
His attention now locked on her face, Bruce managed a deep breath in along with her. Held it when she did. Let it out.
She didn’t release him for another few repetitions, until he was breathing mostly on his own again. Then she returned her attention to Constantine.
“What.” It wasn’t aggressive. Just a completely flat, completely toneless statement.
Constantine gave her an entirely hopeless smile, pulling his hands from his pockets to give her jazz hands.
“And that’s what he’s not ready to hear yet. Your boy, Jason, Red Hood, has gotten himself personally warded by the Ghost King. He’s the next thing to invulnerable right now,” he added bitterly, as if that made any of it better.
An icy hand clenched in Bruce’s chest again, but he forced himself to still. To breathe through it. To not turn and run, run until he found his child and tore him away from whatever influence had him.
The Ghost King had a hold of Jason. Jason who’d all but ordered Bruce to let him go.
“And Jason must have been in direct contact with the King to receive these wards?” Diana asked sharply, and Bruce’s head snapped back to her.
It was a good question. Important, obvious, there was a connection there that he should be making, but he couldn’t think. His head was spinning, heart pounding, and every shadow seemed black as pitch.
Constantine grunted an agreement, shooting Bruce an almost sympathetic look.
Could. Could this be the oath? Not his own instinctive, natural panic?
Bruce couldn’t tell, he’d been so afraid for so long, ever since he held Jason’s broken body in his arms. Ever since he buried his son.
It felt the same. But he had mastered that fear long ago, so this would not control him now. He had to be better.
Frowning at Diana, he leaned forward.
“Explain.” She’d probably assumed that he’d made the same connection. He probably should have.
There was just a brief flash of surprise on her face before her expression softened, her hand gentling over his.
“Jason was the one who told you of these Anti Ecto Acts, was he not?” She asked pointedly, a dark brow arching delicately.
Bruce about managed a grunt of agreement, his jaw clenched too tightly to speak. She waited a moment longer, watching his face, and then sighed.
“Then is it not likely that either he has told Balance of these Acts, or that Balance was the one that told him?”
Constantine jerked and got halfway through a bellowed curse before she cut him off with a glare. Her tone brooked no argument as she continued with a firm, frosted patience.
“Jason is a principled young man, even if not of the exact principles you prefer. Either he has warned you because he believes we have time to fix this, or because the King would prefer we handle it,” she said bluntly.
It sounded so simple, put like that. Far too simple. Bruce shook his head, leaning in.
“We can’t know for sure-”
“Batman.” There was nothing harsh in her tone. Nothing so overtly aggressive as the glare she kept giving Constantine. Just a calm, cool statement that sucked the air from his lungs.
The weight of her own mantle, the Amazon princess who would one day be Queen. Not his friend Diana; Wonder Woman.
Once she was sure he wouldn’t continue, she fixed him with a sapphire stare.
“Do you believe Jason Todd would condone the end of the world?” She asked simply, and that at least was that plain.
“No.” It didn’t even require thought; whatever he feared ever since his son took his first life, Bruce knew that.
Jason was fundamentally a good boy. So kind, so giving, ironically he had been the most well adjusted boy Bruce had ever given the mantle to.
Which was what made what he’d become so painful. It was everything he never should have been.
Wonder Woman nodded as if that solved all the rest.
“And yet you called the meeting, not him. He has known for several days already and did nothing to alert any of us. Therefore, he does not believe this is an urgent threat.”
It sounded good, and Bruce almost believed it before Constantine snorted.
“Yeah, great, except the kid has no fuckin’ clue what he’s dealing with. Didn’t even know he’d been fuckin’ marked or that sellin’ his fuckin’ service was the dumbest fuckin’ thing he coulda done,” he grumbled and Bruce’s heart fell.
Wonder Woman was not so easily swayed. She raised an eyebrow slowly at the magician.
“And could those protective marks have been placed on Jason against his will?” She asked pointedly, like she knew the first thing about magic.
Constantine hesitated. Frowned a little, thinking hard. Finally he threw both hands in the air and leaned back in his chair, scrubbing them down his face.
“Technically, yes, alright? But I can’t think of a damn reason why they’d bother. Like I told the old Bat, it’s technically a good thing; I couldn’t even get a basic diagnostic spell off, he’s completely fuckin’ magic proof an’ anythin’ that can read that ward will run like fuck.”
Something in Bruce’s chest flickered hopefully. Wonder Woman nodded firmly, then redirected her stare to him.
“Then until we have reason not to, we assume that Jason Todd has control of this situation. He has assigned us to deal with these Acts, either before his king discovers them or on their behalf. You, Batman, will defer to his experience along with that of our experts,” she declared with all the ringing command she was capable of.
It chafed. And yet… he could hear the echo of Harley’s words in her voice.
What if Jason was wrong? It was the kind of thing he always thought about, the kind of thing he couldn’t stop thinking about. The kind of thing that had the Batman able to stand and go toe to toe with gods.
But what if Jason was right? What if Harley, Diana, Constantine were right, and his usual measures would spell disaster?

Creator Spotlight || Raven/ Lena Gantner @ravendraculina
Raven has been an amazing and talented addition to our team. One of the first collaborators to join up, they have brought and incredible and unique talent to the table with a truly inspiring interest in teamwork.
Lena Gatner (also known as Raven online) is an illustrator/Graphic Designer from a small town in America! With four years of experience as a digital illustrator and designer specializing in comic book art, they bring a spunky and passionate approach to their work. Their designs are quirky, fun, and beautiful, with their bright, colorful, and out-of-this-world aesthetics. Proficient in various illustration techniques, both digital and traditional, they have an incredible ability to conceptualize and bring imaginative ideas to life.
Tumblr media
So who are you, Lena? Tell us a bit about yourself!
I am a recent graduate from Uni and have been an active member of my QSA (queer straight alliance) Club as the event coordinator. I was in leadership during the Hight of covid and towards the end when the slate of hate within my state was in full effect. I worked hard to keep the queer community in my area safe and be able to participate in radical events! I reconnected the club with local queer community such as the sex shop and the local countship! Creating a strong foundation for future success and strength within the club no matter what difficult event happens (Such as existing in a red state). I am both a member of a lgbtq+ community but also part of the autism spectrum. Not only has this shaped my life but also the work I create. I care deeply about activism and I am also a passion artist with a love of comics. Part of my studies was studying comic book textures and vintage styles. My proudest work is my senior thesis where I mimicked vintage comic book style. This will always be my proudest spread despite the critics!
Tumblr media
That's amazing! What draws you to comics? How have they impacted you and/or your art?
My personal greatest inspiration since I was young, will always be Kevin Conroy. The Batman Animated series and Justice League animated will be the animation series that drew me into comics. Within comics exists people who fight for a better world no matter the obstacle. To be the change to bring the better world. These figures helped shaped the person who I am and leads me to a lot of comfort for when I feel weak. Kevin Conroy will always be a source of inspiration for my self on how media can impact others. He will always be my Batman, a symbol of Justice when you feel like you live in a world with none. Wonder woman will always be my Ambassador of Peace, bring peace to the world ridden with war and hate. While Superman will always be my symbol of Hope, to hope for something better.
Can you give us a little hint about what you're working on for the Pride Special?
I am working with amazing writer hankenstein for an incredible mini comic and illustrating a pin up page! The Comic will deal with three generations of queer characters coming together and fight baddies! These characters include cult classic The Shadow, Ghostmaker and the Ray! Three incredible characters in a incredible story. For my pin up page I wanted to draw two characters who mean a lot to me Tim Drake and Conner Kent. Referencing a classic interaction between them which fueled years of queer coding and left a lasting impact on queer comic book fans!
We'll give you a taste of this comic as well as other amazing stories and art in the upcoming weeks -- so stay tuned!! We are SO excited to have Raven on board and can't wait to show you more!
You can check out more of Raven's work here, and if you're just as excited to see their work, consider buying them a coffee!

Pitch for the upcoming Earth Avatar TV show:
(note: this is really an expansion of an older post of mine about a 1980s-themed Avatar show)
1) The title:
Avatar: The Legend of Kazuya
2) The plot:
It’s been 60/70 years since Legend of Korra. The world is now in their version of the 1980s. Since Korra’s death, this is how the international community currently looks:
1) The Fire Nation is a mess of class inequality, riots, and a stagnant government. The Fire Nation parliament (which was installed at some point thanks to Korra’s push for more democracy in the world) struggles to pass any sort of meaningful legislation due to political infighting. Meanwhile, the Fire Nation royalty are now the jokes of the world due to several high-profile scandals/affairs and power being shifted to the Fire Nation Prime Minister.
2) The Earth Kingdom is also going through similar societal problems. In addition to the above, crime is skyrocketing in Ba Sing Se, with many people claiming that the capital city is now run by the crime families. Meanwhile, the Earth President was voted in as a result of backlash to the previous president, who the public saw as too globalist, anti-Earth Kingdom, and pro-Avatar. So, the current Earth President is an anti-globalist, anti-Avatar conservative who wants to put the “Earth Kingdom first”.
3) The Water Tribes are in stark contrast to each other. The Northern state resembles the Fire Nation and the Earth Kingdom when it comes to societal advancements and problems. Meanwhile, the Southern state has become the equivalent of a struggling third-world nation, mostly thanks to corrupted leadership and exploitation from the other nations. Despite achieving independence, there is now a movement to reconnect with the Northern Water Tribe as a way to solve the Southern state’s issues.
4) The Air Republic went through the most change. Despite a peaceful start to the new Air Republic, the nation was taken over by extremists who were eager to prevent another Air genocide. This meant focusing on building a formidable military and indoctrinating the public with “pro-Air/anti-world/anti-Avatar” propaganda. Thus, the Air Republic was turned into a police state that is ruled by Airbending nationalists/extremists, and is widely considered to be the most dangerous nation in the world. Our real world equivalent would be something along the lines of North Korea or Iran.
With the way the world is, the public sentiment has shifted against the Avatar. Due to the rise of democracy and nationalism, people now see the Avatar as a dictator due to their ability to intervene in other nations’ affairs in the name of “balancing the world”. So, despite all the good that Aang and Korra did, Earth Avatar Kazuya was born into a world that despised him from the start.
Because of this extreme resentment, Kazuya grew up to be a bitter, angsty man filled with guilt and shame. Since the world views the Avatar as this unrestrained Superman who could do whatever they want, Kazuya decides to live life by a strict code in the hopes of setting a precedent for future Avatars. Kazuya’s code is:
1) The Avatar can intervene if it involves the Spirit World.
2) The Avatar will only intervene in world affairs if it will lead to another world war or some other international catastrophe.
3) The Avatar will no longer be a tool used for political purposes. They must always be neutral and act without emotion.
Kazuya’s code is met with mixed reactions. Some people praised it as a sign that the Avatar was willing to adapt to this new, modern world. Some people criticized it since they saw Kazuya as a coward for letting violent disputes/clashes between nations to occur. Despite the criticism, Kazuya embraces his code as a way to keep the Avatar relevant in a world that seemingly no longer wants him around.
So, Kazuya is an angsty, guilt-ridden man who sticks by his incredibly strict moral code, even though it pains him to do so. Basically, if you know your Marvel, he’s the Avatar version of Matt Murdock (Daredevil).
And that’s basically where the show begins. Kazuya, who is a fully-established Avatar at the start, declares to the world that he will only do his Avatar duties under certain circumstances. Problems then start, leading to Kazuya struggling in deciding whether or not he should intervene.
3) The Kazuya Gang (our main quartet)
* Earth Avatar Kazuya. For voice actor, I was thinking Steve Blum (who previously voiced Amon).
* Haerang: A world-famous pop singer from the Earth Kingdom who joins Kazuya since she views him as a “celebrity” like herself. She is Kazuya’s love interest and the only non-bender in the quartet. For a real world comparison, Haerang is like Madonna in the 1980s.
* Shyam: Haerang’s manager and an exile from the Air Republic. Shyam is a skilled Airbender, but hides his ability due to anti-Air discrimination (based on the state of world politics).
* Miko: A firebending assassin/bounty hunter who was initially hired to kill Haerang (this was the first story arc). Miko later drops the mission after learning that her employer betrayed her, leading to her joining Kazuya to get revenge.
(so compared to the Gaang, Kazuya is Aang, Haerang is Katara, Shyam is Sokka, and Miko is Toph)
4) Some story arcs that I came up with for the show
* The Haerang assassination arc (see above)
* Exiles from the Air Republic attempt to start a world war in the hopes of getting the Earth, Water, and Fire states to invade the Air Republic and overthrow the current government. So, here’s the moral quandary for the Avatar; let a world war happen to overthrow a dictatorship or keep the peace to spare lives?
* The Earth Kingdom begins research into “Avatar-level” weaponry, which pisses off the Spirit World.
* The return of Vaatu and the rise of a Dark Avatar.
* The Earth Kingdom presidential campaign, in which the leading candidate is from the most powerful crime family in Ba Sing Se.
5) Miscellaneous
* Technology advancements are in the 1980s. This means we have (primitive) computers, video games, more modern cars, movies, a music industry, and so on.
* Oh, and guns. There’s guns now, which were probably invented by non-benders so they can keep up with the benders.
* Due to the state of things, the “mystique” of the Avatar world is gone. Kyoshi Island has been reduced to a vacation spot for tourists (because it’s an “exotic” location according to the media). Aang and Korra’s stories have been turned into tacky movies that take numerous liberties with what actually happened (example: in their movies, Aang is a one-dimensional action movie hero who says cheesy one-liners while Korra’s portrayal skips over all her trauma and growth to present her as a squeaky clean superhero). The monument to Zuko has been vandalized by anti-government protestors.
* While avoiding the TV-MA rating, I did picture this show to be much darker and more serious than Aang and Korra’s show. The world is grimmer and Kazuya is not as fun and happy as his predecessors. So, TV-14, maybe?
* This is just a personal preference but I’d love it if the soundtrack was mainly 1980s-themed synthbeats/vaporwave. It’d be incredibly different from the previous shows, but it would fit the setting.

Another fun editorial from my "favorite" publication, Business Insider.
Tumblr media
This was written by the 57 year old rich man who founded it and is currently the CEO. But notice how the choice of picture tries to trick you into thinking a hot younger woman wrote it.
Which is odd, because BI can, and does!, hire hot younger women to write crap like this, all the time. Traditionally targeting Millenials. But I guess our persistent refusal to get knocked up has finally driven BI off to go harass our younger siblings. And Old Henry just couldn't contain himself around all these new young empty wombs anymore.
I read it to see why exactly, on a planet with too many people and too little affordable houses, this rich white man is so upset that people under 40 aren't breeding like they used to. He doesn't give a good reason, just something about how "giving children life" is brave. Which it isn't, by any definition of the word.
What he does take pains to do is explain why all our reasons for refusing to breed are bullshit. Well, he doesn't say it so harshly. Because obviously he's figured out that Elon Musk ordering white people to provide babies for his new crazy experiments isn't a method that's working. So Henry soft-pedals it. He admits war and climate change and political chaos are real, but not THAT real (I have no idea; you figure it out). But even if they are, and I'm paraphrasing here, don't worry, some heretofore unknown wizard or Superman shall appear and fix everything. So no worries, ladies! Be filled with seed!
What Henry doesn't seem to understand is that climate change and general violent chaos may be two of the stated reasons people have for not having kids, but aren't the only ones, or even the major ones. Most people who aren't as mostly-gay and mostly-asexual as myself are under the constant pressures of horniness and family expectations to not let the coming doom of the world at-large change their stances on condom usage.
People avoid having kids because of a perceived lack of support for their personal child-rearing, be it financial or social. If they are having issues with long-term commitment or financial security, they aren't going to sign up for 20+ years of raising another human being. And because we aren't willful idiots, we know financial security is ALSO a big reason people have problems maintaining long-term relationships.
Henry, no one under 40 is going to have kids if they know they're going to have to find a new apartment or a new job, in a new place, every 3 to 6 years. That instability is what is frosting everyone's nethers. And that isn't a philosophical problem, that is a systemic capitalism problem.
That guys like Henry caused. Because Old Henry here had to pay $4 million to the US Government back in 2003 for tricking people into investing in shitty 1990s dot-coms he knew were about to fall apart. He is banned from trading securities and working in the financial services industry anymore because of this.
People don't have babies on a roller-coaster, Henry. And you help build that roller-coaster. They aren't breeding because of YOU, you idiot. So you're hardly in a position to be lecturing anyone about how they aren't doing enough bareback.
...Also, back to the question of why old rich men like Henry Blodget are so worried about "population decline," a thing that isn't a thing. Sans him actually giving the game away, I'm free to speculate, and I will. This is probably that thing where he's worried about America's garbage social security system getting even more pointless without enough young people to steal from to pay the bills. Which is, AGAIN, only a problem because guys like Henry engineered both it and the economy in such ways that it is. They made a joke of a system that runs on bad stupid rules and now blame us for not following those rules. And one of those rules is "you (white people) all need to breed like rabbits," because every system these people make, including their religions, has that same weird rule.
Because these are weird, bad people. Who do financial crimes.
And that's why we don't listen to them.

Bob George in the ARC NYC stacks. Photograph: unknown/ARC NYC ...
‘No one else is saving it’: the fight to protect a historic music collection ...
It all started in a loft in Tribeca, New York, long before it was a trendy neighbourhood. “I had 47,000 records and nobody wanted them,” recalls Bob George, who had just published a discography of punk and new wave music. “That led a lot of people coming to me and saying you have to save this stuff; no one else is saving it. That got the ball rolling in my loft in what is now fashionable Tribeca, which was an incredibly unfashionable war zone in 1974 when I was first there.”
George turned his record collection into the ARChive of Contemporary Music (Arc) in 1985 with co-founder David Wheeler. The non-profit music library and research centre now contains more than 3m sound recordings or over 90m songs, making it one of the biggest popular music collections in the world. Donors and board members have included David Bowie, Jonathan Demme, Lou Reed, Martin Scorsese and Paul Simon.
The Arc is not open to the public but has been a vital resource for film-makers, writers and researchers ranging from Ken Burns looking for a song for his series Baseball to the new Grammy Hall of Fame and Museum in Los Angeles needing cover art for its inducted recordings. Now, however, this unique treasure trove is under existential threat.
The Arc cannot remain at its current Hudson Valley premises indefinitely and is in need of a new and bigger home. “We have to move and we don’t know when we’ll have to move and the collection is really at risk because it’s all on pallets,” says George, who dreams of a patron like James Smithson, the British scientist who left his estate to the US to found the Smithsonian Institution. “We’re looking for someone to help us buy a very wonderful property or for us to build a new building on vacant land in upstate New York.”
After growing up in Youngstown, Ohio, George moved to New York in 1974 as a visual arts student and started collecting records as a DJ. In 1981 he released Laurie Anderson’s first single, O Superman, which sold nearly a million copies worldwide and made it to number on the UK singles chart. He was a guest on John Peel’s beloved BBC radio show, sneaking in little-known records from New York, and took music to European broadcasters too. People kept giving him records that other collections turned down.
Tumblr media

“I was doing the book and then doing Peel shows and it accidentally became this large collection that nobody wanted. They kept saying, oh, we collect classical, we collect Broadway, we collect ethnic music. I said, well, I have funk, reggae, African and hip-hop and they said, oh, no, we don’t collect any of that. Forty years later, I say, you put all those together and that’s what music has become.”
The simple goal of the archive, which has always had a peripatetic existence, is preservation. “We have no interest in quality,” George cheerfully admits. “It started that way from the very beginning because there’s no way to tell what’s valuable in the future. Everybody brings their own criteria and tastes to things in their own time. But the future is quite different, as we hope.”
The archive has never received aid from any city, state or federal organisation but its scale gives the Library of Congress a run for its money. It has absorbed major collections from musicians and fans and is home to most of Rolling Stone Keith Richards’ extensive blues inventory.
George dispatched two semi-trailers to a condemned house in Boston sinking under the weight of Jeep Holland’s set of more than 125,000 recordings and over 2,500 signed albums from the likes of the Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley and the Sex Pistols. “Going towards the bathroom, he has a gas stove, the pilot light is on, there are records in the oven. It was just a storage space ... His car had become so full of records that he abandoned it and rented a car.”
George has made repeat trips to countries such as Brazil, Cambodia, Colombia, Cuba, Japan, Jordan, Laos and Thailand. The Arc contains Demme’s personal collection of Haitian albums. More than 150,000 pieces of world music have been catalogued; there are plenty more to do. “We’ve tried to get as much of that material as possible so that collection is just fabulous.”
The Arc preserves copies of every recording in all known formats. It has electronically catalogued more than 400,000 sound recordings and digitised 200,000 with the Internet Archive – more than any other public university or private library in America. It also contains more than 3m pieces of material including photos, videos, DVDs, books, magazines, press kits, sheet music, ephemera and memorabilia.
Tumblr media

George says: “We catalogued 105,000 singles just recently; we have another 200,000 or 300,000 to go. This is the first way a band at one time got their feet in the water. They put out one or two or three singles. If they did hits, they got the chance to do an album and so much of this material does not exist on LP or CD. Little by little more of it might be streaming because of YouTube, as people can get away with murder on YouTube, which is great, but YouTube will disappear. Everything commercial will disappear.”
Among those who have turned to the archive is the Oscar-winning director Ang Lee, who wanted records by the singer Bert Sommer for his film Taking Woodstock. “The archive is amazing because we don’t know what we have until somebody needs it. We’ve been into the stacks and we found five LPs by Bert Sommer. For me, it’s like I have no idea who this guy is and what he did; he’s sort of a folkie. For Quincy Jones, we just sent him a list of the 8,000 things that he’s either produced or on.
“Research was how we basically stayed alive along with the largesse of the rock stars or celebrities that we had hooked up with. The idea was never to open to the public but that’s what we want to do now. I don’t think it’s untrue that we’re one of the largest in the world and that we want to make that available. We’ve tried to save two copies so there will always be a listening copy and then that would then become a listening library.”
George hopes the new archive will be open to students, educators, historians, musicians, authors, journalists and the general public. An anonymous donor has come forward with a million dollars to help realise that dream but more money is urgently needed. One possible new home is an abandoned IBM campus spanning 34 acres, although that would cost $8-10m. George is considering partnering with an upstate university and has plans to offer residencies for scholars.
“People could come in and produce a work, and that would go out into the world. It could be a blog, essay, tape, compilation, new recording, whatever. We’re really quite un-academic. I’m against it somewhat and I’d like people to have ideas and bring those ideas and put them back into the world as opposed to making it an interactive experience for everybody. I don’t want to be Disney World. It’s nice to have seminars. It’s nice to have listening parties. It’s nice to have dances.”

✨Favorite SuperWonder Moments✨ (Part.1)
Okay so I was asked this a while ago and honestly every SuperWonder moment, in comics, is my fave but if I just had to try to narrow it down, here are a few and why…
I love that Superman and Wonder Woman has basically been connected since the beginning of the shared DC universe. There’s no denying it given Diana was meant to be Clark’s counterpart/equal and the romantic tease came naturally later with the silver age of team ups.
Here we go:
Superman #5 (May '87)... Clark dreams of Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman #15 (Apr. '88)... Diana dreams of Superman in
Wonder Woman #162 (Nov. '00)…Sparring and a little friendly flirtation in
Wonder Woman #300… Diana dreams of marrying Superman
DC Comics Presents - Superman and Wonder Woman #32.
Frank Miller Verse: Yes it’s crazy but it’s fun and we got Lara and Jonathan, two of the most powerful ass kids.
Wonder Woman #130 (1962), Diana Prince goes on a date with Superman to take revenge on Steve Trevor who keeps treating her like garbage...
This particular scene is funny and interesting because again, even at the earliest of time, it was known, if not for the back and forth of tradition default pairings, the better option for Diana is Superman.
Tumblr media
Justice League of America #69, after Diana announces to abandon the team, we learn that Barry Allen has always felt that some day Superman and Wonder Woman would get married, comparing Superman losing Diana to Aquaman losing Mera and Hal losing Carol.
One of the first of many DC characters used by writers to allude to a potential romantic relationship between Superman and Wonder Woman.
The fact that Clark and Diana’s close relationship was so obvious and must have had some very serious romantic moments in front of the League, Barry believed they would go so far to marry?!
Tumblr media
World's Finest #204, a computer-dating service match up Superman and Wonder Woman ...
It’s pretty much self explanatory. They are the perfect match.
Tumblr media
Wonder Woman #141 (Feb. '99), Trapped in a dreamlike state resulting from their subconscious desires, Diana and Clark live a "dream" where things have gone differently between them: they got together, shared their mission, marrying and had a child...
Sharing a dream together is powerful. This is their deepest desire. Although denied because of the status quo, this was very much true to their feelings.
Tumblr media
Superman #165 (Feb. '01), Sparring and... what do those silhouettes are depicting? Are they kissing at sunset? LOL.
So this was sweet and sexy. Best Friends with obvious sexual tension sharing a moment that’s only between them. Is that an embrace or a kiss?? The art seems intentionally ambiguous for the reader to interpret how they want.
Tumblr media
Action Comics #818 (Oct. '04), Superboy asks Diana if she loves Clark
Kon been peeping things out between them for a long time. Putting Diana on blast and straight up asking her was so right. She needed moment to collect her thoughts. The dialogue afterwards seemed more like editorial mouthpiece for the sake of status quo but the art says otherwise with her drawn to caressing of Clark and her facial expression.
Tumblr media
Kingdom Come (1996) become a couple at the end of their character arcs and conceive a child, symbol of a new beginning and better future.
The Kingdom (1999) follow-up to KC and introduction of the Hypertime, a "reality" where SM/WW's son will have the power to travel into.
My entry into DC. Still the best and most prolific story DC has about the reality of the world and how the heroes stumbled, completely fell at a point but they learned from mistakes/hardships and fought for a new beginning.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
DC - The New Frontier (2004), A bit of attraction between Kal and Diana during the post-World War II
Diana calling Superman “my Kal” has such intimacy. They are best friends with this undeniable bond. Again, no matter the status quo, this was at the center of the story and it was beautiful especially with Diana’s monologue.

Solarpunk Writing Prompts #2
Here you can listen to original podcast
Here is the source of the podcast's transcript you can read below
Solarpunk Prompts - The Refugee Camp
Hello world. I'm Tomasino.
This is Solarpunk Prompts, a series for writers where we discuss Solarpunk as a literary, artistic, and activist movement.
Or, as RoAnna Sylva describes it: Solarpunk is a genre of ecologically-oriented speculative fiction characterized both by its aesthetic and its underlying socio-political vision.
In each episode we look at one story prompt using that genre lens, offering commentary on the prompt, some inspirations from the world today, and some considerations for writers.
Most importantly, we consider how that story might help us to better envision a sustainable civilization.
If this is your first time here, I'd recommend checking out our introduction episode first, where we talk about what Solarpunk is, why you should care, and why this series came into being.
This episode's prompt is titled: "The Refugee Camp".
There is a full-fledged town built from a refugee camp which was set up there two decades ago. The inhabitants speak their own creole, a mix of more than five languages, and have very shaky relationships with their neighboring communities or states, each of which considers it a lawless territory and might be plotting to take over.
I think the refugee camp is a fitting place to start our prompts. They are the standard setting in our world for communities just coming through tragedy. When there is war, famine, flooding, or any number of challenges to a people they often find shelters in foreign lands, sometimes thrown together with other groups fleeing their own hardships.
Refugee stories are also plentiful in science-fiction: Superman is a refugee from Krypton, The Doctor is a refugee from Gallifrey, or Arthur Dent, a refugee from Cottington in the West Country. These are all individual stories, though, and not the camp and community we are striving for. Instead we might look to Battlestar Gallactica, or Babylon 5, or the Nantucket trilogy for examples of entire communities of refugees. And, indeed, those are vibrant and capture a bit of the colorful characters and internal conflicts that arise in such places. But Solarpunk can depart from this view of refugee camps as places of despair.
In our prompt the camp has grown into a full-fledged town. That suggests a thriving regrowth emerging from this mixed culture and reflected in their creole dialect.
Is that a realistic vision to take, though? Is this just Solarpunk being naïve and blindly optimistic?
Let's take a look to real refugee camps in South Sudan and Uganda, where the r0g_agency, a Berlin-based nonprofit, has been working with communities to help them develop innovation hubs. Five of these communities have linked together to form #ASKnet, a program that offers training in open-source hardware and software, entrepreneurship, media production, gender equality, and financial literacy. They also run repair cafes, giving hands-on experience and learning, and reducing waste and preserving natural resources.
This is just one program that is built and run by small community organizations.
How about Communitere? It was founded by individuals who saw the amazing rebuilding efforts after natural disasters like the 2004 earthquake in the Indian Ocean which caused the deadliest tsunami in history. The world responded with one of the greatest relief efforts in record time, all at once. But then medicines spoiled before they could reach the sick. Food rotted before it could find the hungry. This failure of local logistics is what inspired the organization.
What do they do? Well, they don' “intervene”. Instead, they provide spaces where communities can implement their own plans and choose from a variety of tools and models that Communitere makes available. They provide training, processes, toolkits, and space. They empower the communities to build their own futures. And now they're up and running in Haiti, Nepal, Greece, and the Philippines.
These are both stories of information sharing and empowering local communities. They succeed by building together both local talent and infrastructure and focus on sustainability.
And they mean sustainability in many forms:
environmental sustainability - processes that work with the unique local environment
economic sustainability - processes that can continue without ongoing external funding
and cultural sustainability - respecting and empowering local cultures
When you start thinking of these refugee camps as places where people are building new things, new homes, new lives, new opportunities, then the writing opportunities open up for you as well. Gone are the two dimensional sketches of a dirty camp full of broken people. These people are alive and empowered!
In a different genre setting we might lean into the shantytown aesthetic, or the lawlessness of the area might become an easy setting for crime stories. I challenge you, with this prompt, to steer clear of those well trodden paths, and focus on the community as a vibrant, living thing.
Speaking of shantytowns, I'm reminded of Cory Doctorow's setting in the book, Makers, with it's unique community of hackers, and the unique way they used language… Which brings us to the next aspect of this writing prompt: Creole.
According to Collins English Dictionary: A Creole is a language that has developed from a mixture of different languages and has become the main language in a particular place.
These are fascinating growths of blending cultures and can powerfully illustrate the fundamental aspects of a community:
who they are
what they believe in
and how they respond to a changing world
Think of the unique flavor of the Belter language in the Expanse. Every odd word choice, or word borrowed from Chinese or Indic or Slavic, is a reminder of what these people are. In some cases this unique language use even extends to meaningful gestures.
The way these languages develop is so interesting in its own right that there is an indy card game where you collaboratively create one with friends. It's called Dialect, and it won IGDN's Game of the Year in 2019 along with a host of other awards. In that game you 2-4 of your friends will create what's called an Isolation, basically a community set apart from others for some interesting reason, and then play out their history across three different ages. The game then ends with the Isolation no longer being isolated, whether for good or for bad.
As the game descriptions says: "Dialect is a game about an isolated community, their language, and what it means for that language to be lost."
It's a fascinating way to spend 3-4 hours with friends, and incredibly insightful into this exact process.
Now, before we go let's take a look at that prompt one more time:
"The Refugee Camp"
There is a full-fledged town built from a refugee camp which was set up there two decades ago. The inhabitants speak their own creole, a mix of more than five languages, and have very shaky relationships with their neighboring communities or states, each of which considers it a lawless territory and might be plotting to take over.
Okay.
It's time to wrap up, but before we go, lets review our guidelines for Solarpunk writing one more time:
Community as Protagonist (No "Chosen One")
Infrastructure is Sexy (No simple solution)
Human/Environmental Context (Not Man vs Nature)
Thanks for staying with me today. I hope you'll join me for the next Solarpunk Prompt.

Potential Future Careers for the “Superman and Lois” Teens
Please feel free to reblogg or comment your own opinions
Nat
Pretty oblivious she is interested in and excelles at electrical and mechanical engineering. The main question is which branch she will specialize in, and where she will work. She is a vegan, though we don’t know why, but it implies a certain enviromental and/or social conciousness. Her world was destroyed, so a job in the enviromental sector isn’t far fetched. Her world was also invaded, so her working at freeing people from oppresion and war is also likely.
Mechanical and/or electrical Engineer: More specifically trying to find more enviroment friendly, sustainable and affordable way to create technology, developing techonology to combat climate change, and creating technology that helps rescue people from war and natural disasters.
Jon
Jon is good under pressure, fast thinker, athletic, has great people and leadership skills, is a good investigator, loves sports and wants to help people. I see him in a job where these strength gets put to use, he gets to help people, and he preferbly gets to do physical activities.
FBI agent or something similiar. He gets to help people, occasionally get physical. It also suits his aformentioned strengths. This is my preferred job of choice for Jon
Firefighter: He gets to be physical and help people. He would be good at it because he is good under pressure, athletic and good at working in a team and calming scared people down.
Mechanical Engineer: Due to his interest in JHI’s work
Fire and Arsonist Investigator. Inspired by his investigative skills and his job at the fire station.
Therapist, phychologist or counselor: Due to his people skills and desire to help people.
Doctor or biomedical or pharmaceutical engineer: I can picture him being inspired to develope new treatments for sick people after Lois’ cancer battle. Haven’t really seen a lot of interest from him in science, besides the Irons’ work, so I am not sure if this is the path for him. I can especially see him be interested in biomedical engineering, since that involves technology
Physical therapist: Combining his people skills and desire to help people. He would be good at encouraging, cheering up and motivationg his patients. Plus, an interest in physical health fits with love of sports.
Sports coach: Combines his love of sports and people skills. I can picture him being good at nurturing and supporting young teens and preventing them from buckling under the pressure of varsity sports.
Jordan
Jordan is hard to pin down. Don’t know what kind of job would allow him to sneak off and rescue people when he hears trouble, so I am going to ignore that aspect. Jordan has shown interest in music and video games. He says he is not that into cars, and iirc, hasn’t shown that much interest in the Irons’ work.  He said he wanted certain AP classes when he was a freshman in s1, but he didn’t state which classes he wanted. Is he STEM nerd? Hisotry and Humanities nerd? Both? I am going to make a lot of assumptions about his interests and scienctific skills.
Pharmaceutical engineer: Interested in fighting mental illness, due to personal experience, but not comfortable with people enough to go into a field where he would be providing psychotherapy.
Psychiatrist: Because maybe he is more comfortable talking to mentally ill people than neurotypicals, and he will be more comfortable with human interaction as he gets older.
Computer Science Job: Such as software developer, system architect or AI engineer. Since he likes video games, it’s easy to imagine him as a computer guy (even though I know there is a difference between liking computer games and being good with computers).
Chemical engineer: I like this idea, because it’s nerdy and useful, but very different from what Nat and JHI do. He would be the only one in his family to focus on that particular field.
Electrical engineer: Not that different from what Nat and JHI do, since their suits also probably includes a lot of electrical engineering work, not just mechanical engineering work, but if he focuses on different things, I still think
Sarah
Interested in music. Good at helping others emotionally and has experience with mental illness, both as a patient and as next of kind of a patient (Kyle and his alchoholism and potentially PTSD from working at the fire station). Seems to be okay with kids - though Sophie is her sister, so maybe she isn’t a kids person. Plus, we only see them together a few times, so maybe she isn’t that involved in Sophie’s life. I imagine her job would involve music or mental health care, and possibly children.
Therapist, psychologist, conselor or mental health professional of some sort
Music therapist: Combines her interest in music and mental health
Social Worker: Same reason as why I think she would be a mental health proffesional. Plus, she watched her home town struggle a lot, and her mom and dad trying to improve it. It would be cool to watch Sarah going from hating living in Smallville, to trying to embrace the good, and improve what is lacking - regardless of whether she stays or moves somewhere else.
Musician: Already shown interest in this path in the show.
