The funniest parts about Tumblr, Reddit, and Twitter all collapsing is they all had to undo ONE decision, and it would've prevented it all.

If Tumblr had gone back, or even just lessened, its porn ban. It could still be in the top 10 sites, worldwide.

If Reddit had reversed its API decision, it wouldn't be struggling with a volatile, unsellable user base.

If Twitter had just not changed ANYTHING. If Musk had just LEFT THE SITE ALONE, it would've begun pulling a profit within a few years, and would've been bringing in enough revenue to keep the site alive until then.

But that didn't happen. These sites were making power hungry moves and chasing the money of advertisers to make up for it. However, each one of them forgot one very important thing:

A sanitized, unpopular website upsets it previous users. Upset users flee a site, leaving angry, volatile individuals behind. Angry, volatile users aren't marketable. Without marketable users, the site has no marketable value. And without marketable value, no advertisers are gonna give you money.

"Why is [Social Media CEO] destroying their website?" Because their internal reports suggest that their power-users (die hard, addicted, cost of time fallacy drained users) will not leave their platform even for the dumbest changes. The people who will leave? The ones who don't have reach, the ones who aren't advertiser friendly, the ones with literally nothing to lose on their sites. They are the ones who "waste" their bandwidth and resources, they post images, videos, etc at a much higher rate than the deigned social-fantasy gods hitting those 1000x multipliers of social engagement, and they won't receive any money from them because they don't have a reach at that level. [Social Media CEO] is openly trying to drive the 'common' person off their platforms, the ones who bring little to the table that an AI bot can just replace to satiate and give the 'influencer/marketer/shil' their respective analytics. This is why platforms actively fail at solving "The Bot Problem" in most cases. Sure it's a relatively hard problem to solve on a systems level, but it's not impossible to severely reduce the bot population. Bots help daily active user counts, engagement, and pushing the power-users to continue using the platform as nudges (and often inflate those wonderful financial reports for their stock price to go ever higher). Talking of stock prices, there is the concept of cost-per-user, or revenue-per-user. If you reduce the 'common' user, and focus on power-users you can change the more important analytics for the stock price for internal or external investors. Less people, but with more (or the same, or even less revenue) looks better. Think of it as "Less Effort but for the same money". A reduction of "staff", for the same monetary output. Social Media platforms used to try hard for everyone to be on them. They don't want that anymore. Dealing with everyone is a nightmare. But those power users? The ones who generate revenue from a smaller set of users? That's the goal. This is the "private club" of yesteryear, for the internet. This is the new internet business plan, different form than the one everyone thinks of that has dominated the last thirty years of the internet. This is the new way to do business on the internet in the 2020s.

Probably nobody that wants to hear this but I am so fucking pissed about reddit killing itself.

Reddit was my favourite place on the entire web. Unlike all the other social media it wasn't about putting individual users on a stage and everyone following them it was simply a shared stage with the users collectively deciding what get's to be in the spotlight.

Yes it was a shithole but it was our shithole. We decided what we got. The algorithm on reddit was utter dogshit and everyone just disabled it, the real algorithm was the hive mind filtering the best content to the top. All the while actual conversation and debate was actually possible because the comments were not arbitrarily limited in length or ordered by what can only be described as little Timmy's first attempt at a Bogosort algorithm.

We had a fucking contract: users bring the content and watch ads, moderators keep the site usable and the amount of effort reddit has to put in to not get sued down to a minimum, all reddit had to do was provide the servers, ban a subreddit once in a blue moon and be content with having a decently profitable site with the factually most worthless users of big social media

But NOOOOO "We NeEd To InCrEaSe PrOfItS! ThOsE pEsKy ThIrD pArTy ApPs ArE sTeAlInG oUr MoNeY" No you idiot they just provided a better service than you did. Why shut them down when you could just copy what they have and make them unnecessary? And then in the process they try to softban nsfw as well because "ItS bAd FoR aDvErTiSmEnT!" god how I fucking hate capitalism.

There's this beautiful thing that people have created in collaboration which brings joy, news, entertainment, education, support and community to so many people and it was ALREADY PROFITABLE but no we need to ruin it to squeeze out as much cash as possible.

Fuck all those people who helped build the website and make it what it is today, fuck all the users who contributed it and spent sleepless nights to make some dumb pixel art bringing your shitty ass website into the news all across the globe fuck all the moderators who spent countless hours doing unpaid labour to keep a community they loved alive and saving you billions in moderation costs, fuck everyone that loves this website

Having spent the last two full hours absolutely enraptured with this series of blogs, i was wondering if anyone involved in this bro strider muppet nonsense knows @the-muppet-joker or who’s behind that account, or if he’s just an unrelated guy that just so happened to frequently reblog and interact with the 6 of you guys. I have significant reason to believe that blog is another elaborate bit (as it’s the reason i got here) so it would be really fucking funny if whoever runs that account (be they genuine or not) just so happened to stumble upon your shitposts while searching for horny muppet posts and started reblogging then. either way props to you for doing all of this and good luck on whatever daisy brown alantutorial shit you wind up making next because you are all definitely going places. sending this ask to all of you individually btw.

I think I may have been the first of the blogs to get interacted with by the muppet joker, as I received an ask from him relatively early into my blogs tenure and simply let it steep until the other folk started hitting his line and interacting with him. That being said!

ik this topic has been beat to literal death but btw nesta is, at most, three years older than feyre. elain herself is like one or two years older. the way discussions surrounding who is accountable for what happened pre-acotar with the sisters, you’d think nesta and elain were at least five or six years older than her, but they were all really young.

nesta and elain didn’t let feyre do anything when they were all actual teenagers. and even if that weren’t true, it’s not either of their responsibility to control what feyre does. the only valid critique about their behavior pre-acotar was that they were ungrateful and used all the money feyre got for them. even then, it’s not a great critique because those two weren’t characters before the last act in acotar.

the only person that can be blamed for feyre hunting is their father. he is the father. he should’ve been taking care of them. and we can go into a whole debate on whether we should be blaming him anyway because of both his disability and the state of his mental health at the time, but none of that is relevant for this conversation because nesta and elain aren’t at fault.
