One thing that I think a lot of Disco Elysium meta misses (likely because a lot of it is very clearly written by young Americans writing from an intensely American-centric cultural perspective without even really realizing it) is that one of the singular and central themes of the game is massive-scale generational trauma in a home that is economically collapsing as its resources and people are being drained by an occupation.  People have noted that no one tries to help Harry, despite the fact his mental illness is incredibly obvious to everyone around him.  He tells Kim that he completely lost his memory, and Kim politely asks him to focus on the work.  He tells Gottlieb that he had a heart attack, and Gottlieb tells him that if he’s still alive it couldn’t have been that bad.  That he’ll drop dead sooner or later, but then so does everyone.
And that’s the most important thing: so does everyone.  Look at Martinaise.  Look at the world in which Harry lives.  It is not our own, but it is adjacent to ours.  More specifically, it is clearly adjacent to the states of the Eastern Bloc: overtaken and occupied by a faraway government that clearly doesn’t care about Revachol or its people.  And that is obvious in every tired face, every defeated citizen, everyone trying to eke out a little happiness or meaning in spite of the overwhelming trauma and damage around them.  The buildings are still half-destroyed.  The bullet holes are still in the walls.  The revolution was decades before, but it still feels to the people there like a fresh wound.  The number of men of Harry’s generation who are not alcoholic or otherwise deeply fucked up are very few.  Some, like Kim, hide it better, but the deeper you dig into his history, the more you realize how damaged Kim is.  He’s more than a little trigger happy, and hates that about himself, but he is a product of his environment: Kim’s entire life is seeing people he cared about shot and killed, so his instinct now is to shoot first himself, to protect those few people left who still matter to him.
Harry is not unique in his trauma.  He is a distillation of an entire culture of people who tried to rise up and make something beautiful, and were instead routed and occupied.  He is trapped between the occupation and the people on the ground, along with all the rest of the RCM.  Their authority comes from the occupying government, but it is implied that they were formed out of the remnants of the citizens militia which sprung up from Revachol itself as a way to try to mitigate some of the horrors being committed on its streets.  The Moralintern sure as hell wasn’t going to get their hands dirty, so they happily conscripted (and therefore could better control) this group, who are only recognized in certain places, and whose authority mostly amounts to giving out fines.  The RCM is corrupt, but it is corrupt in the same way its culture is.  Bribes are considered standard with them, not a moral failing, but a necessity, so long as those bribes are correctly logged as ‘donations’.  It’s how the RCM stays afloat, and the rest of Revachol completely understands that.  Everyone would take a bribe if it meant they kept eating.  Everyone would take a little under-the-table money if it meant keeping a roof over their heads.  The officersof the RCM certainly don’t make enough to see a doctor.  They have an in-house lazarus, and if he can’t fix them they just die.  Mental health care?  What mental health care?  Harry doesn’t get it for the same reason no one else does: it doesn’t really seem to exist.  There are no counselors, no psychologists, no psychiatrists.  How would they even start?  If the world is what is broken, if everyone is suffering a similar catastrophic amount, it makes sense that Harry’s trauma would simply get rolled up with all the rest.  Kim asks him to get on with the job because Harry’s suffering is not remarkable in Revachol.  He is one of an entire generation who have an astronomical number of orphans from the revolution, and so many younger people are left more or less orphans as their parents drink themselves into oblivion like Cuno’s father.  So Harry’s truly unique attribute is embodying all that trauma, having it all inside of him, filling him to bursting.
To really engage with the themes of the game, engaging first and foremost with the reality of Revachol is imperative.  Imposing our own reality onto Revachol, particularly if coming from an American perspective (which tend to have the habit of both viewing the world through an American lens and not realizing they’re doing it because they’ve never experienced a different lens), will always feel shallow to me because of this.
All that is to say, I would love to hear some more explicitly European meta about this game, and especially Eastern European meta.  If anyone can point me to some good, juicy essays from that perspective, I would be grateful!

My betrothed handed me a phone and asked if I’d like to call in our order for burgers tonight. I was like, “I haven’t looked at a menu- do you know what you want?”
“I want the classic burger, which is what you want too.”
“I- I might get something different!”
“You always look at the menu and get the same thing. You’ll want it without the onions or tomato, though. And they have tots, so you’ll get those.”
The mortifying ordeal of being known is so real. I feel both cherished and called out.

(genshin impact spoilers incoming)
one aspect of furina's characterization that's pretty understated but that i really really really love is her intelligence and curiosity. usually in genshin, when a character's intelligence is an important trait of theirs, there are aspects of their design, writing, voice acting, etc, that very clearly tell you "hey this character is smart." albedo, for example, wears a labcoat, is always saying big sciency words in a calm, rational tone of voice, and other characters are always talking about how smart he is
but furina? nothing about her on the surface suggests that she's a "smart" character - quite the opposite, in fact. superficially, she's introduced as a bratty, conceited, overconfident person who actually has no idea what she's doing. we eventually learn in the archon quest that that was all an act, but even after she regains her freedom, nothing about her really seems archetypically intelligent, at least at face value
instead, furina's intelligence is always shown rather than told (the only exception being nahida's voiceline about her). she had an intelligence network across teyvat feeding her information, and we saw in the flashback how she directed researchers to study the prophecy and potential ways of stopping it. before things like lyney's trial or directing the two musketeers, she'd stay up all night planning and piecing things together all on her own. she loves learning new things, she has lines in the teapot about how, when she's interested in something, she wants to become the most knowledgeable person in the topic, and also how she'd like to disassemble the teapot itself to learn how it works, and she's quick to learn new skills (like surfing). and, of course, she's well read, and quite possibly teyvat's foremost expert on the performing arts
i like how furina sort of defies the concept of character archetypes. she's initially presented as an archetypical bratty, dramatic, spoiled popular girl, but that was a role she forced herself into because it's what people expected of her. but the real furina, while still retaining some of the flamboyance from her archon persona, doesn't really fit into a clear mold. she's smart without being a super-genius, and she's kind without being a soft-spoken doormat. it makes her feel multifaceted and real, and i really love that!
anyway, this is why it makes me mad whenever i see people calling furina stupid, cuz she's not!

Going to break into your house with pots and pans and yell at you until you reframe your thinking of productivity to include more than just schoolwork or a salary or chores and the like.
Did you do a thing? Was there a positive result for you or someone else?
Congratulations, you did a Productivity!!!
You aren’t ALWAYS going to be able to have the energy to do what we consider traditionally productive. You won’t always have the motivation.
Yeah, maybe you could have spent two hours studying for that test instead of 15 minutes. Maybe you could have cleaned the kitchen instead of the dishes. And? That’s still something!
Productivity is doing things!! Did you eat food and drink water? You did something that helped your body work! Doodled in class? You made art! Even just posting theories and memes on tumblr dot com is a thing! You thought out the post, figured out how to organize it (even if you don’t realize you did that) and you made it! And now other people can see and you DID something and you should be proud!!!
Be proud of yourself or I am going to show up outside your window tonight and scream positive affirmations louder than a cat who has just discovered her food bowl is empty.

Seward's bone deep desire to run away from the asylum is not exactly surprising. There have been a lot of really good meta posts about how the return of Van Helsing into his life is the turning point where we see the caring and good side of him and how we can interpret his life as a student in Amersterdam as one of freedom and happiness. How he is part of the tragedy of manners, how strict social expectations allow Dracula to persist, and how they only exacerbate the unhappiness of the characters.
And I think the tragedy of Seward is that, really, he should not be the head of an asylum. It's a job that brings him no joy, and he's BAD at it. We can all recognize that if your first reaction to going back to work is "What if I just leave it all." That isn't a healthy work environment.
Now, in the modern day, the ability to pick and choose a work environment, even to leave one that is damaging your mental health, is a privilege. (IT SHOULDNT BE, but it is). And, although it is definitely reaching crisis levels in modern times, major changes in your career have almost always been difficult (unless you are really rich, or a particular brand of academic in the 17th-18th century, or both).
Seward can't just leave and become a surgeon. To give up the lofty position of "Head of an Asylum" would be unthinkable in the 1890s, especially for a reason like "Being here is basically turning me into the Joker." Like, how would Seward explain that in polite society? Would they accept that reasoning? Would they create salacious gossip if they didn't? Can Seward leave his position without losing a great amount of social capital?
Probably not.
His rise to head of an asylum, as many have pointed out, was meteoric, to say the least. It has afforded him status and respect and also left him deeply, deeply fucked up. And he can't leave!
I think his desperate attempts to quantify Renfield's behaviors into a new mental illness are telling in this regard. Maybe he is too used to having to meet some sort of expectation, and now he thinks this is the logical next step (It's NOT, but I digress). The feeling of having to keep performing above expectations, grasping at straws to do so, and subsequently burning oneself out (as well as others around you) and engaging in unethical practices? Idk. It sounds like something that would happen today. (tbh there are probably a ton of Sewards out there today, as there are still systemic problems within the mental health system that allow for the dehumanizing and abuse of patients).
It doesn't excuse his behavior. Nothing he does to Renfield is excusable, but I think it does explain some of the *why*. He isn't just cruel for cruelty's sake.
So, tldr I guess: I think reading Seward as someone who got stuck on a career path that he realized was unfufilling and that he ends up hating. Social conventions restrict him from just quitting without and a (socially acceptable) good reason to do so, and a lifetime of being regarded as one of the smartest people in the room means he can not allow himself to fail. Unfortunately, this also means he can not admit when his actions or his ideas are wrong when it comes to his job.
(But he can show that uncertainty FOR Lucy, and TO Arthur and Van Helsing, which speaks his trust and love for them)

Proship dni for my comfort thanks.
I feel like everyone portrays F/Os as these romantic, perfect all around lovers, and while that's all well and good! I prefer F/Os who are flawed, who don't always say the right things. Who can sometimes be petty or selfish. F/Os who have a habit of seeing conflict as a contest on who can talk the loudest, instead of a conversation. F/Os who run out of patience sometimes and have to go cool off mid-conversation, even if they're right. F/Os who struggle to communicate their emotions.
I find comfort in the idea of a relationship where mistakes like that are allowed and given room to breathe. A relationship where, no matter what the conflict is, the walls eventually come down. Maybe it takes hours, maybe days until you're both calm enough to work it out. Maybe it takes several conversations to solve it, but each end in Hey. I love you. I'll talk to you tomorrow.
You're not perfect, and neither is your F/O. That's okay. That can be beautiful, too. There's not a hug that's more comforting than the firm, tearful one after reaching mutual understanding. Knowing that you didn't mess it up too much, you didn't break things permanently. You couldn't if you tried. They missed you... and you've got some serious affection to catch up on.

hey cod readers/writers just an fyi, if you do this then that's extremely disrespectful to copy/paste someone's work and change it because you didn't like it. i understand that the cod fandom is more heavily catering to an afab/fem audience and finding gender-neutral or male!reader is very difficult, but do not do this to as a "solution" to this lack of inclusivity. find someone who takes those types of requests, filter your tags and content properly, block writers you don't want to see fem works from, and follow writers who better cater to your interests. and if you can't find that? write your own fics. don't plagiarize someone's work because you couldn't be bothered.
and the kicker is? they tagged:
Tumblr media
** 2/27 - i have made some edits to this post because now this user has started harassing blogs (as they have done in the past), and are continuing this behavior. it has come to light that they also edit fics that they think are "too boring" for them, which is even more insulting to unknowing writers in this fandom. please read more to see some other posts made about this, especially the user and their alt accounts they use to circumvent when writers (not just fem aligned) have blocked them due to their grievances with them.
edit: they have deleted that post where they so proudly admit to this plagiarizing, but have not shown any reflection or remorse for their actions 🤷‍♀️
edit 2: if you have an issue regarding my tags or about plagiarism vs personal use, i've addressed it here. if you have a better suggestion for tags, kindly let me know. these were the tags i personally felt applied to the audience and situation involved.
edit 3: since this user has decided to start harassing users, myself included, and still thinks that plagiarism is okay, i have decided to officially address them. they have created many side blogs to regain access to content from people who have blocked them. please read HERE to see their blog and alts they use to keep up this behavior.
edit 4: i've gotten a couple responses stating that private/personal use may not be considered plagiarism. no hate to anyone, this is totally a valid debate! there is no clear answer here and i don't think there are any sources that will give you anything definitive. if there are, please send some my way. i'd love to check them out. that being said, i personally do think that this counts as plagiarism even if it's private use. it's unauthorized taking and use of someone's intellectual property. the thing is, here they've now made it public that they are doing this. this might be what constitutes it as actual plagiarism since they are making it known that they are taking works and editing them without the author's knowledge or consent. there is no proof of the existence of these documents, but that is a very shocking statement to (very proudly) make. especially since this is someone who plans to be a writer in the cod fandom.
for full context, here is the full screenshot (they have since deleted the post and changed their url to @/casual-homosexual-enthusiast):

I don't need a vacation, I need a sabbatical, where I go live in an abbey in switzerland for six months where I read and garden and study and stare at the sky and learn about birds and make some art and write a lot and help feed the nearby village with the garden crops and there are no ads or algorithms or tv shows or fastfood restaurants and I walk into town once a week for phone and internet to check on friends and family and then I go away again and preferably there are cats and goats and those soft brown cows and one shaggy dog and I learn I have a new favorite constellation and type of flower and shade of green.

In wake of the stupid shitshow that is this dumb coronation, I saw someone going 'oh protests are illegal in the UK? Ireland we've got to get you out of there' and I've seen a lot of other stuff to that effect of 'oh poor Wales', or 'get out of there Scotland' (from people outside the UK) and like!!! people in England are also suffering this impacts people in England!
I agree and fully support all kinds of independence for the other countries in this shitshow of a nation- do not twist my words with this one, I support independence, and when I see folks from those countries only talking about this, obviously I support them because their primary concern is independence.
But!! It's fucking infuriating to see people from outside the UK acting like the other countries just have to get out of the UK and then no more innocent people will suffer, as if that's the only problem, as if there aren't plenty of people in England who don't deserve this nonsense either

we joke but i find it hilarious that this is most likely genuinely the symbolism of the ending of this scene. moving onto the future and acceptance of the past and where it’s gotten you. the fact that its specifically komaeda that calls his name and komaeda he’s seen eating next to in the shot in the credits ON TOP OF the multiple obvious komahina parallels they packed into dr 2.5’s ending (which takes place right before dr’s end) all seems very intentional. so basically what i am saying is that hajimes bisexuality was an essential part of The Narrative and The Symbolism all along btw.

Nothing like going to the Izzy hands tag and seeing a bunch of post about how beautiful and meaningful Izzy's death was and you're an overly sensitive moron if you're upset about his death
...
Izzy's death meant nothing. He was shot in the (left) side by chance and, unlike everyone else who received and injury on that side, he died. For no reason.
He wasn't setting Ed free (he already did that in the first three episodes! That's what the subtextual divorce was about!) He wasn't showing us that death can happen at any time (this is supposed to be a comedy guys). He just died.
And somehow the fact I and others are upset that Izzy's entire arc was cut short for no reason is the real problem. Izzy was finally happy, with a support system and yeah death isn't always predictable, but someone wrote this which means it wasn't a surprise or an unfortunate tragedy, it was a choice. Izzy shouldnt have died. Not like this. Not this ugly, pointless death, right at the height of his arc.
If I wanted to watch that, I'd watch black sails. Then again, even black sails let's death have meaning.
